We hypothesised that the exploration tendency of the amphibious mangrove rivulus Kryptolebias marmoratus would be inhibited in the terrestrial environment because of constraints on terrestrial locomotion or orientation. Using a novel object test, we showed that the fish explored objects in the aquatic but not the terrestrial environment, supporting the existence of constraints on terrestrial exploration. In further tests of the effects of extrinsic factors on terrestrial movement between aquatic refuges, shallow water depth simulating desiccation risk and the presence of a conspecific simulating intraspecific competition increased emersion outside of refuges, while high water salinity had no effect. These extrinsic factors had little effect on terrestrial movement between different aquatic refuges, except possibly for the lowest water depth tested. A significant association observed between emersion activity and movement between aquatic refuges suggested that terrestrial movement in K. marmoratus might depend on the tendency of individuals to emerse.  相似文献

In fish, vision may be impaired when eye tissue is in direct contact with environmental conditions that limit aerobic ATP production. We hypothesized that the visual acuity of fishes exposed to hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-rich water would be altered owing to changes in cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity. Using the H2S-tolerant mangrove rivulus (Kryptolebias marmoratus), we showed that a 10 min exposure to greater than or equal to 200 µM of H2S impaired visual acuity and COX activity in the eye. Visual acuity and COX activity were restored in fish allowed to recover in H2S-free water for up to 1 h. Since K. marmoratus are found in mangrove pools with H2S concentrations exceeding 1000 µM, visual impairment may impact predator avoidance, navigation and foraging behaviour in the wild.  相似文献

Synopsis One-hundred eleven specimens of the cyprinodont fish Rivulus marmoratus were trapped from burrows of the great land crab Cardisoma guanhumi in east central Florida and the entire alimentary tract removed for analysis of food items. Three categories of burrows (inactive, active and sealed) were sampled to examine possible relationships between burrow type and presence of R. marmoratus. Forty percent of the guts examined contained no food items, while the remaining 60% contained items of both terrestrial and aquatic origin. Capture rates among burrow categories did not vary significantly, and most collections consisted of 1 or 2 individuals per burrow. Mean standard length of fish within a burrow declined when more than 3 specimens were captured from a burrow. Supplemental observations on reproductive status and burrow water temperature are noted.  相似文献

Larval body shape changes and developmental timing were examined in two clingfish species from the south‐east Pacific Ocean, Gobiesox marmoratus and Sicyases sanguineus. Ontogenetic allometry showed no interspecific variation and <7 mm standard length (LS) larvae of both species occupied similar morphospace, but larger G. marmoratus showed increased body depth while larvae of S. sanguineus developed a flattened head and maintained a hydrodynamic body. Estimated developmental timing suggests that larval body shape changes were faster in G. marmoratus than in S. sanguineus prior to settlement.  相似文献

Many mammalian species decline on forest sites that are harvested by clearcutting because of a loss of food, cover, and other components of stand structure. Small mustelids are impacted negatively as is the southern red-backed vole (Myodes gapperi), a principal prey species, that disappears from clearcuts within a year of harvest. These effects may be potentially ameliorated by aggregated retention harvests that leave unlogged patches on clearcuts. We tested three hypotheses (H) that (H1) abundance, reproduction, and survival of M. gapperi populations, (H2) total abundance, species richness, and diversity of the forest-floor small mammal community, and (H3) the presence of small mustelids would be greater in large than small patches of retention forest on new clearcuts. We measured demographic responses of M. gapperi, total small mammals, and the presence of small mustelids (American marten, Martes americana, and small weasels (Mustela spp.)) from 2014 to 2016 in replicated treatments of four sizes (ha) of retention patches (means of 0.53, 1.50, 4.13, and 18.73) near Elkhart in south-central British Columbia, Canada. Mean abundance, reproduction, and survival attributes of M. gapperi were similar among treatment sites over the 3-year study. Overall mean abundance ranged from 3.5 to 5.3 voles per line in patches while this microtine was extirpated on clearcut sites (i.e., no forest patches). The similarity in population dynamics among the various forest patches across a gradient of increasing patch size of 4.5 to 35.3 times did not support H1. Mean abundance, species richness, and diversity of total forest-floor small mammals were similar among treatment sites, and hence did not support H2. Although not formally significant, mean species diversity did show a consistent increase from the largest (0.82) to the smallest (1.11) patch size, owing primarily to the presence of several generalist species such as Neotamias amoenus, Microtus, and Sorex in nearby early successional habitat. Small mustelids were present at similar levels among patch sizes, presumably in response to abundance of small mammal prey, and hence did not support H3. Although our results were relatively short-term, the detailed assessment of population dynamics of M. gapperi indicated that habitat quality was sufficient to maintain this species regardless of patch sizes, ranging from 0.3 to 20.0 ha. Similarly, the total forest-floor small mammal community and presence of small mustelids also followed this pattern. All sizes of forest patches have conservation value and will help to maintain abundance and diversity of forest mammals, both predator and prey species, on clearcuts. Longer-term studies (e.g., at 5- to 10-year intervals) are essential to determine if our results are sustainable in augmenting forest restoration.

Synopsis The partitioning of O2 uptake between aquatic and aerial gas exchange and its dependence on ambient water PO2 was studied in the facultative air breathing teleost Synbranchus marmoratus, after acclimation to well aerated water and after acute and chronic exposure to hypoxic water. O2 uptake was also studied following acute air exposure and after prolonged entrapment in soil. Breathing rates during water and air breathing in response to reduced water PO2 and tidal volume during air breathing were also studied. S. marmoratus satisfies its O2 requirement by water breathing alone until water PO2 falls below 30–50 mm Hg (switching PO2) depending on the acclimation history. Below the switching PO2, air breathing is adopted while active water breathing stops. The O2 uptake varied little for all groups when the principal mode of gas exchange changed at the switching PO2. The highest O2 uptake prevailed when the fish employed the mode of gas exchange in operation during the acclimation period (i.e. water breathing for normoxia-acclimated, air breathing for hypoxic-acclimated).Acclimation to chronic hypoxia gave a much higher switching PO2 55 mm Hg) than for the other groups (about 30 mm Hg). S. marmoratus maintained its O2 uptake when acutely exposed to air. When entrapped in soil in an aestivating state, the O2 uptake was reduced to 25% of that in water or during acute air exposure. The overall gas exchange ratio for air breathing was very low (RE 0.1).Branchial water pumping increased with lowering of water PO2. The rate of air breathing was independent of water PO2.The findings are discussed in the light of the ecophysiological conditions confronting S. marmoratus.  相似文献

The goal of the present study was to determine which sensory cues the mangrove rivulus Kryptolebias marmoratus, a quasi-amphibious, hermaphroditic fish, uses to orient in an unfamiliar terrestrial environment. In a laboratory setting, K. marmoratus were placed on a terrestrial test arena and were provided the opportunity to move toward reflective surfaces, water, dark colours v. light colours, and orange colouration. Compared with hermaphrodites, males moved more often toward an orange section of the test arena, suggesting that the response may be associated with camouflage or male–male competition, since only males display orange colouration. Younger individuals also moved more often toward the orange quadrant than older individuals, suggesting age-dependent orientation performance or behaviour. Sloped terrain also had a significant effect on orientation, with more movement downhill, suggesting the importance of the otolith-vestibular system in terrestrial orientation of K. marmoratus. By understanding the orientation of extant amphibious fishes, we may be able to infer how sensory biology and behaviour might have evolved to facilitate invasion of land by amphibious vertebrates millions of years ago.  相似文献

为了评估趋礁鱼类在岛礁海域的生境适宜度,选取马鞍列岛的褐菖鲉(Sebasticus marmoratus)为指示物种,以2009年获取的水深、盐度、叶绿素a、浊度和底质数据作为褐菖鲉春、冬季栖息地指示因子,建立栖息地适宜度曲线,并计算各站点的栖息地适宜性指数(HSI)。结果显示:1)绿华、花鸟、嵊山沿岸站点HSI普遍较低,枸杞岛、三横山、东库山沿岸站点褐菖鲉HSI相对较高,其中最大值1.0出现在枸杞岛沿岸的站点;2)春季褐菖鲉幼鱼的适宜水深在6 m左右,成鱼适宜在8—12 m的水深处生存;冬季褐菖鲉对8—12 m的水深适宜性良好;3)春季所有褐菖鲉的适宜盐度为30PSU,冬季幼鱼的适宜盐度为27—31PSU,成鱼的适宜盐度为27PSU、31PSU;4)随着叶绿素a和浊度值的增大,褐菖鲉适宜性逐渐降低。底质类型为岩时最适合褐菖鲉生存。5)相关分析显示,褐菖鲉丰度与底质类型相关性最大,而与叶绿素a、浊度呈显著负相关。研究结果表明,初级生产力和浑浊程度越高对褐菖鲉丰度抑制越明显。底质类型是褐菖鲉丰度分布的重要影响因子,其中分布有较多大型海藻的岩礁生境是其最适宜的栖息地。利用2010年春、冬季环境调查和渔获数据进行HSI模型验证,资源丰度随HSI值升高而增加,因此构建的模型可用于趋礁鱼类在岛礁海域的栖息地适宜性分析。  相似文献

The allozymes and morphology of 110 specimens of three Sebastiscus species (S. marmoratus, S. tertius, and S. albofasciatus) in the East China Sea and near Japan were compared. Results of 20 allozyme loci studied showed that all three species were closely related (Nei's unbiased genetic distances, 0.057–0.133) but could be identified on the basis of informative loci with a few exceptions. Initial identification based on color patterns agreed with allozyme identification in more than 98% of Sebastiscus specimens and agreed completely in S. albofasciatus. One specimen that was initially identified as S. marmoratus because of the dark body color was actually S. tertius according to two informative allozyme loci. Number of pectoral fin rays differed between S. marmoratus (18 or fewer, 98%) and S. tertius (19 or more, 85%) in this study. The previously mentioned dark specimen had 19 pectoral fin rays, which are characteristic in S. tertius. Using seven morphological measurements, canonical discriminant analysis between S. marmoratus and S. tertius classified less than 90% of specimens into the original groups (species). Some specimens of S. tertius resembled S. marmoratus in body shape and vice versa. A combination of genetic characterization and morphological examination is necessary to identify S. marmoratus and S. tertius accurately. Distinction based on allozymes and color patterns with numbers of pectoral fin rays should provide satisfactory identification. Summary Isolated gastric mucosa of the skate shows marked changes in acid secretory rate (J H ), electrical potential difference (PD), and transepithelial resistance (R) with changes in mucosal bathing solution composition and a constant serosal solution. Removal of the 350 mM urea usually present in the mucosal solution reduces acid secretory rate by 25%, while adding urea to 1 M has no significant effect. Complete removal of osmotic solutes (distilled water) inhibits secretion by 78%, isotonic urea (no salts) inhibits by 54%, while isotonic salts alone (no urea) gives control secretory rates. The changes in PD and R are consistent with acid secretory changes. Theory and experience with terrestrial organisms would not predict these changes. The most likely explanation is osmotic swelling and shrinking of the surface cells, and occlusion of the secretory tubules in the swollen condition. We isolated Rivulus marmoratus mitochondrial DNA by long-polymerase chain reaction with conserved primers, and sequenced it with 36 sets of internal conserved primers, which were designed from the extensive sequence similarities of mitochondrial DNA from several fish species. The R. marmoratus mitochondrial DNA has 17,329 bp with a conserved structural organization compared to those of other fish. Rivulus marmoratus mitochondrial DNA also has two nearly identical control regions. The basic characteristics of the R. marmoratus mitochondrial genome are discussed.  相似文献

Redox signalling in mitochondria plays an important role in myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury and in cardioprotection. Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) modify cellular structures and functions by means of covalent changes in proteins including among others S‐nitros(yl)ation by nitric oxide (NO) and its derivatives, and S‐sulphydration by hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Many enzymes are involved in the mitochondrial formation and handling of ROS, NO and H2S under physiological and pathological conditions. In particular, the balance between formation and removal of reactive species is impaired during I/R favouring their accumulation. Therefore, various interventions aimed at decreasing mitochondrial ROS accumulation have been developed and have shown cardioprotective effects in experimental settings. However, ROS, NO and H2S play also a role in endogenous cardioprotection, as in the case of ischaemic pre‐conditioning, so that preventing their increase might hamper self‐defence mechanisms. The aim of the present review was to provide a critical analysis of formation and role of reactive species, NO and H2S in mitochondria, with a special emphasis on mechanisms of injury and protection that determine the fate of hearts subjected to I/R. The elucidation of the signalling pathways of ROS, NO and H2S is likely to reveal novel molecular targets for cardioprotection that could be modulated by pharmacological agents to prevent I/R injury.  相似文献

This study examined four species of Syzygium (S. firmum, S. makul, S. operculatum, S. rubicundum) Myrtaceae, a tree genus that dominates the canopy of rain forests of south‐west Sri Lanka. Syzygium spp. occupy differing habitats with relation to succession and forest topography. We examined differences in leaf morphology and physiology in response to amount of shade, an important environmental variable affecting Syzygium distribution within the forest. To study change in leaf structure and physiology, environmental shelters were constructed simulating forest shade that differed in quality, quantity and duration. Seedlings were exposed to: (i) 0% shade (full sun, FS), red : far red (R : FR) ratio 1.27; (ii) 65% shade (large opening, LO) with direct sunlight similar to the centre of a large canopy opening, R : FR ratio 1.27; (iii) 82% shade (small opening, SO) with direct sunlight similar to the centre of a small canopy opening, R : FR ratio 1.27; (iv) 58% uniform light shade (LS) with a quality similar to the outside edge of a large canopy opening, R : FR ratio 1.05; (v) 85% uniform medium shade (MS) with a quality similar to the inside forest edge of a large canopy opening, R : FR ratio 0.97; (vi) 99% uniform deep shade (DS) similar to that of the forest understorey, R : FR ratio 0.23. The shelters were constructed in a large open area at the field station of the Sinharaja World Heritage site, Sri Lanka. Seedlings of each species were grown for two years in their respective shade treatments before physiological, morphological and anatomical measurements were made on leaves. Variation in leaf structure and physiology between the species was associated with differences in shade‐tolerance and water‐use. All species increased in photosynthesis rates and dimensions in leaf structure (leaf blade and cuticle thickness, stomatal density, thickness of upper and lower epidermis, and thickness of palisade mesophyll) with decrease in shade. In contrast, stomatal conductivity was highest in the DS (99% shade) treatment. Leaves of Syzygium firmum were thickest and largest in area. S. firmum also had highest photosynthesis in the SO (82% shade) treatment. S. firmum was the most shade‐tolerant of all species: it grows well in low shade and its leaf structure suggests it to be the most conservative in water‐use of the Syzygium spp. In the forest S. firmum can persist in the forest shade as established seedlings, but grows best within canopy openings of late‐seral rain forest. Leaves of S. operculatum were thinnest but had highest stomatal densities of the four species. S. operculatum is considered shade‐intolerant, with a leaf structure suggesting it to be prone to desiccation, and by implication susceptible to drought. S. operculatum is found along streams within early seral rain forest habitat, often originating on stream banks after land clearance for cultivation. In the FS (0% shade) treatment, S. rubicundun had highest photosynthesis rates and greatest number of leaves but smallest leaf area of the Syzygium species. S. rubicundum is more shade‐intolerant but more efficient in water‐use than S. operculatum. S. rubicundum is a mid‐seral canopy tree of the midslope stands that are thought to have originated after catastrophic windthrows or swidden cultivation. The leaf physiology and structure of S. makul suggests it to be both moderately shade‐tolerant and conservative in water‐use. It is the most widely distributed Syzygium species across the topography of late‐seral rain forest. We suggest forest disturbance and hydrology are important environmental factors that influence distribution of Syzygium species across the topography. Results from this study contribute to a body of knowledge suggesting that canopy tree species of rain forests in south‐west Sri Lanka have discrete affinities to topography and differences in successional status, and that adaptations in leaf structure and physiology are indicative of such phenomena. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 141 , 365–377.  相似文献

In vertebrate species, cytotoxic H2O2 and other lipid or organic hydroperoxides (ROOH) formed in aerobic metabolism are removed by a selenoprotein, glutathione peroxidase (GPOX). The GPOX activity in most rat tissues ranges from 100 to 1,000 units (1 unit = 1 nmol NADPH oxidized·mg protein?1·min?1), except for muscles (20–30 units). In contrast, GPOX activities of two strains of the housefly (Musca domestica), cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni), southern armyworm (Spodoptera eridania), and black swallowtail butterfly (Papilio polyxenes), were found to be in the range 2–12 units. Trivial GPOX activity was detected in the confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum). In the earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris), banana slug (Ariolimax columbianus), and market squid (Loligo opalescens), the GPOX activity ranged from 1 to 5 units. Tissue selenium concentrations were about 500–1,000 ppb for adult M. domestica, 600 ppb in T. confusum, 32 ppb in T. ni, 17 ppb in S. eridania, and 31 ppb in P. polyxenes larvae. The form of selenium incorporated at such high levels in tissues of invertebrates such as M. domestica remains an unresolved issue. Peroxidase activity of non-selenium glutathione-S-transferase (GT) against ROOH may compensate for the low GPOX activity. Catalase (CAT) has high activity and wide subcellular distribution in insects. This may be an evolutionary adaptation to GT's inability to catalyze the reduction of H2O2. The GT's peroxidase and CAT activities were not assessed for other invertebrate species, and warrants an investigation due to their reported low GPOX levels.  相似文献

Most eucaryotic organisms classified as living in an extreme habitat are invertebrates. Here we report of a fish living in a Mexican cave (Cueva del Azufre) that is rich in highly toxic H2S. We compared the water chemistry and fish communities of the cave and several nearby surface streams. Our study revealed high concentrations of H2S in the cave and its outflow (El Azufre). The concentrations of H2S reach more than 300 μM inside the cave, which are acutely toxic for most fishes. In both sulfidic habitats, the diversity of fishes was heavily reduced, and Poecilia mexicana was the dominant species indicating that the presence of H2S has an all-or-none effect, permitting only few species to survive in sulfidic habitats. Compared to habitats without H2S, P. mexicana from the cave and the outflow have a significantly lower body condition. Although there are microhabitats with varying concentrations of H2S within the cave, we could not find a higher fish density in areas with lower concentrations of H2S. We discuss that P. mexicana is one of the few extremophile vertebrates. Our study supports the idea that extreme habitats lead to an impoverished species diversity.  相似文献

Summary Wall-pore sensilla in the capsule of Haller's organ on foreleg tarsi of the tick, Amblyomma variegatum, show multicellular responses upon stimulation with human and bovine breath. Filtering breath through charcoal removes the stimulant for some of these receptors. Analysis by gas chromatography coupled with olfactory sensillum electrophysiological recordings indicates that an ethanol extract of the breath components trapped on charcoal contains a major stimulant eluting at the same retention time as H2S. Two types of H2S-sensitive receptors have been identified. They are housed in separate sensilla, and are called sulfide-receptor 1 and 2.Although, both receptor types are characterized by a high sensitivity to H2S with an estimated threshold of ca. 0.1 ppb and a response range covering 5–6 log orders of magnitude, their overall response to sulfides and mercaptans is nevertheless dissimilar. The type 1 receptor fires slightly more upon stimulations with H2S than type 2, whereas ethylmercaptan induces a stronger response from type 2, and dimethyl sulfide activates only receptor 2.In a bioassay, H2S tested at concentrations of ca. 0.02 ppm and 1 ppm equally arouses 60% of resting ticks. Two-thirds of these ticks quest the air with their first pair of legs, and the remainder start active search. By contrast, H2S at ca. l ppm in a mixture with CO2 severely diminishes the locomotor stimulating effect of CO2.  相似文献

Grazing and fencing are two important factors that influence productivity and biomass allocation in alpine grasslands. The relationship between root (R) and shoot (S) biomass and the root:shoot ratio (R/S) are critical parameters for estimating the terrestrial carbon stocks and biomass allocation mechanism responses to human activities. Previous studies have often used the belowground:aboveground biomass ratio (Mb/Ma) to replace the R/S in alpine ecosystems. However, these studies may have neglected the leaf meristem biomass, which belongs to the shoot but occurs below the soil surface, leading to a significant overestimation of the R/S ratio. We conducted a comparative study to explore the differences between the R/S and Mb/Ma at both the species (Stipa purpurea, Carex moorcroftii, and Artemisia nanschanica) and community levels on a Tibetan alpine grassland with grazing and fencing management blocks. The results revealed that the use of the Mb/Ma to express the R/S appeared to overestimate the actual value of the R/S, both at species and community levels. For S. purpurea, the Mb/Ma was three times higher than the R/S. The Mb/Ma was approximately two times higher than the R/S for the species of C. moorcroftii and A. nanschanica and at the community level. The relationships between the R‐S and MbMa exhibited different slopes for the alpine plants across all the management practices. Compared to the fenced grasslands, the plants in the grazing blocks not only allocated more biomass to the roots but also to the leaf meristems. The present study highlights the contribution of leaf meristems to the accurate assessment of shoot and belowground biomasses. The R/S and Mb/Ma should be cautiously used in combination in the future research. The understanding of the distinction between the R‐S and MbMa may help to improve the biomass allocation mechanism response to human disturbances in an alpine area.  相似文献

Two hybridizing species of newts, Triturus cristatus and T. marmoratus, with overlapping distributions show a parapatric distribution when surveyed in detail. The factors that govern the distribution of cristatus vs. marmoratus in the département (province) of Mayenne in western France are identified as forestation and relief. The parapatric hybrid zone running through Mayenne is narrow but widens to approximately 20 km in an area with mixed habitat. In this area most breeding sites are shared and F1 hybrids form about 4% of the total population. Analysis of survey data collected about 30 years previously also shows an essentially parapatric distribution. Comparison of past and present distribution maps reveals that cristatus has superseded marmoratus over large areas in the south of Mayenne. An area where marmoratus replaced cristatus also exists, but it is more limited in size. Gene flow between cristatus and marmoratus is analyzed using 10 diagnostic genetic markers [9 protein loci and mitochondrial (mt) DNA]. In syntopic populations nuclear gene flow is bidirectional with a mean frequency of introgressed alleles (f) of 0.3%. In allotopic populations of cristatus and marmoratus gene flow is present in areas of species replacement (f = 0.3%), while gene flow appears to be absent in those areas that have been continuously occupied by a single species. At the biogeographic level, the presence or absence of introgression is paralleled by the persistence or absence, respectively, of pockets of cristatus–marmoratus syntopy. All F1 hybrids possess the cristatus type mtDNA. This may be due to asymmetric interspecific mate choice and would explain the observed absence of introgression of the maternally inherited mtDNA genome in areas where cristatus replaced marmoratus. The cristatus–marmoratus hybrid zone bears characteristics of both the clinal (parapatric) hybrid zone model and the mosaic hybrid zone model. Such a mixed model—for which we propose the term “reticulate hybrid zone”—can be appreciated only if studied over a two-dimensional geographic area and also through time.  相似文献

Chiral discrimination observed in high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with the novel chiral stationary phase (CSP‐18C6I) derived from (+)‐(R)‐18‐crown‐6 tetracarboxylic acid [(+)‐18C6H4] was investigated by X‐ray crystallographic analysis of the complex composed of the R‐enantiomer of 1‐(1‐naphthyl)ethylamine (1‐NEA) and (+)‐18C6H4. Mixtures of 1‐NEA (the R‐ or S‐enantiomer) and (+)‐18C6H4 were dissolved in methanol‐water (1:1) solution and allowed to stand for crystallization. The R‐enantiomer crystallized with (+)‐18C6H4 as a co‐crystal, although the S‐enantiomer did not. This result was in good agreement with the enantiomer elution order of 1‐NEA in CSP‐18C6I. The apparent binding constants (Ka) of the enantiomers to the (+)‐18C6H4 obtained from 1H‐NMR experiments also supported the above‐mentioned result. The X‐ray crystal structure of the 1:1 complex of the R‐enantiomer and (+)‐18C6H4 indicated the four sets of hydrogen bond association between the naphthylethylammonium cation and oxygen of polyether ring or carbonyl group of (+)‐18C6H4.
