Synopsis The mangrove forest fishRivulus marmoratus (Cyprinodontidae) has frequently been observed out of water, a phenomenon generally attributed to habitat drying. We tested the hypothesis that hydrogen sulfide, a substance characteristically found in their environment, can serve as a stimulus for emersion. In the field we foundR. marmoratus in water with low to moderate levels (<250 ppb) of HS. In the laboratory,R. marmoratus leaped from water contaminated with H2S at ecologically relevant concentrations (median response at 123 ppb). Aquatic hypoxia did not induce emersion, but prey capture did. Oxygen consumption by both juveniles and adults decreased significantly in air (27 and 25%, respectively). Our results suggest that avoidance of H2S and the ability to survive terrestrial conditions enable this species to permanently occupy an area of the forest unavailable to other fishes. Furthermore, because a variety of stimuli lead to etriersion inR. marmoratus, terrestriality in this species is likely a generalized response to environmental stress as well as a means of exploiting terrestrial resources.  相似文献

The goal of the present study was to determine which sensory cues the mangrove rivulus Kryptolebias marmoratus, a quasi-amphibious, hermaphroditic fish, uses to orient in an unfamiliar terrestrial environment. In a laboratory setting, K. marmoratus were placed on a terrestrial test arena and were provided the opportunity to move toward reflective surfaces, water, dark colours v. light colours, and orange colouration. Compared with hermaphrodites, males moved more often toward an orange section of the test arena, suggesting that the response may be associated with camouflage or male–male competition, since only males display orange colouration. Younger individuals also moved more often toward the orange quadrant than older individuals, suggesting age-dependent orientation performance or behaviour. Sloped terrain also had a significant effect on orientation, with more movement downhill, suggesting the importance of the otolith-vestibular system in terrestrial orientation of K. marmoratus. By understanding the orientation of extant amphibious fishes, we may be able to infer how sensory biology and behaviour might have evolved to facilitate invasion of land by amphibious vertebrates millions of years ago.  相似文献

Amphibious animals are adapted for both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. The conflicting requirements for dual habitats are perhaps most pronounced in the air‐breathing fishes, which represent an intermediate stage between the totally aquatic habitat and terrestrial colonization. A key requirement for amphibious fishes is terrestrial locomotion. The different densities and compositions of air and water impose constraints for efficient terrestrial locomotion that differ from those required for aquatic locomotion. I investigated terrestrial locomotion in a small South African fish, Galaxias ‘nebula’, by exposing 60 individual fish to air in specially designed raceways and quantifying movement type and occurrence as a function of availability of water, fish size and environmental temperature. Nebula showed a sustained undulating form of terrestrial locomotion characteristic of amphibious fishes and also a transient ballistic locomotion (jumps) typical of fully aquatic species. Terrestrial movement was influenced by fish size, with medium‐sized fish undertaking more jumps towards water, and fewer jumps away from water, than their smaller or larger conspecifics. In contrast, axial undulation was mainly influenced by temperature. However, there was no consistent pattern in temperature effects presumably because temperature is just one of a suit of environmental factors that may affect terrestrial locomotion. Nebula's amphibious adaptations allow it to cope with the unpredictability inherent in its natural environment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Measurements of sound propagation were made in a shallow, sloping bottomed freshwater pond. The frequency responses of the pond had a highpass characteristic with a sharp cutoff frequency. Cut-off frequency of the response was inversely related to the depth of water at the shallowest transducer (either projector or receiver) and was the same whether propagating downslope or upslope (reciprocity). The relationship between cut-off frequency and depth was significantly different from that expected for propagation in a channel with either a rigid or pressure release (gas) bottom. The highpass characteristic is due to modal propagation in the ‘waveguide’, and the effect of this environmental filtering is 30–60 dB between frequencies that propagate and those that do not. Thus, the physical constraints of this shallow-water environment on acoustic communication by aquatic animals are much greater than those measured in terrestrial environments. These constraints are discussed relative to selection for behavioural adaptations of acoustically signalling aquatic animals and are compared to similar adaptations found in terrestrial systems.  相似文献

Synopsis One-hundred eleven specimens of the cyprinodont fish Rivulus marmoratus were trapped from burrows of the great land crab Cardisoma guanhumi in east central Florida and the entire alimentary tract removed for analysis of food items. Three categories of burrows (inactive, active and sealed) were sampled to examine possible relationships between burrow type and presence of R. marmoratus. Forty percent of the guts examined contained no food items, while the remaining 60% contained items of both terrestrial and aquatic origin. Capture rates among burrow categories did not vary significantly, and most collections consisted of 1 or 2 individuals per burrow. Mean standard length of fish within a burrow declined when more than 3 specimens were captured from a burrow. Supplemental observations on reproductive status and burrow water temperature are noted.  相似文献

An increase in environmental temperature can deleteriously affect organisms. This study investigated whether the semiterrestrial estuarine crab Neohelice granulata uses emersion behavior as a resource to avoid thermal stress and survive higher aquatic temperatures. We also examined whether this behavior is modulated by exposure to high temperature; whether, during the period of emersion, the animal loses heat from the carapace to the medium; and whether this behavior is altered by the temperature at which the animal has been acclimated. The lethal temperature for 50% of the population (LT50) was determined through 96-h mortality curves in animals acclimated at 20 °C and 30 °C. The behavioral profile of N. granulata during thermal stress was based on monitoring crab movement in aerial, intermediary, and aquatic zones. Acclimation at a higher temperature and the possibility of emersion increased the thermotolerance of the crabs and the synergistic effect of acclimation temperature. The possibility of leaving the hot water further increased the resistance of these animals to thermal stress. We observed that when the crab was subjected to thermal stress conditions, it spent more time in the aerial environment, unlike under control conditions. Under the experimental conditions, it made small incursions into the aquatic environment and stayed in the aerial environment for a longer time in order to cool its body temperature. The animals acclimated at 20 °C and placed into water at 35 °C remained in the aerial zone. The animals acclimated and maintained at 30 °C (control) that were placed in water at 35 °C with the possibility of emerging into hot air transited more frequently between the aquatic and aerial zones than did the animals that were put in water at 35 °C with the possibility of emerging into a cooler air environment. We conclude that emergence behavior allows N. granulata to survive high temperatures and that this behavior is influenced by acclimation temperature.  相似文献

Amphibious fishes often emerse (leave water) when faced with unfavourable water conditions. How amphibious fishes cope with the risks of rising water temperatures may depend, in part, on the plasticity of behavioural mechanisms such as emersion thresholds. We hypothesized that the emersion threshold is reversibly plastic and thus dependent on recent acclimation history rather than on conditions during early development. Kryptolebias marmoratus were reared for 1 year at 25 or 30°C and acclimated as adults (one week) to either 25 or 30°C before exposure to an acute increase in water temperature. The emersion threshold temperature and acute thermal tolerance were significantly increased in adult fish acclimated to 30°C, but rearing temperature had no significant effect. Using a thermal imaging camera, we also showed that emersed fish in a low humidity aerial environment (30°C) lost significantly more heat (3.3°C min−1) than those in a high humidity environment (1.6°C min−1). In the field, mean relative humidity was 84%. These results provide evidence of behavioural avoidance of high temperatures and the first quantification of evaporative cooling in an amphibious fish. Furthermore, the avoidance response was reversibly plastic, flexibility that may be important for tropical amphibious fishes under increasing pressures from climatic change.  相似文献

  1. Many once-perennial rivers have become intermittent. Channel drying can result in fish mortality if refuges are not available. Understanding where refuges occur and if fishes use these refuges can provide insight for species persistence and help stakeholders manage limited resources. Streamflow diversions in the Rio Grande of New Mexico can result in >60 km losses of aquatic habitat, affecting up to 30% of the range of imperiled Rio Grande silvery minnow (Hybognathus amarus). Potential refuges include areas with perennial flow below diversion dams, isolated pools, and irrigation return flows.
  2. We examined spatial and temporal patterns of both adult and young-of-year Rio Grande silvery minnow collected in isolated pools that formed during streamflow intermittency from 2009 to 2019. We hypothesised that: (1) Rio Grande silvery minnow would be more numerous in pools that persisted longer; (2) they would be more numerous in isolated pools located closer to upstream areas of perennial flow, due to upstream movement to escape drying; and (3) increased rate of aquatic habitat loss each day would result in more Rio Grande silvery minnow in isolated pools.
  3. During the 12 years of the study, we counted Rio Grande silvery minnow in 3,985 isolated pools that formed during streamflow intermittency. We related counts of Rio Grande silvery minnow in each pool to the maximum pool depth, rate of loss of aquatic habitat that occurred that day, and distance each pool was to an upstream barrier. In 2016, we examined persistence of 290 isolated pools until complete desiccation or reconnection with continuous flows occurred, and the factors that influenced pool persistence.
  4. Deeper pools persisted for longer, but depth had a small positive effect on counts of adult Rio Grande silvery minnow and no effect on counts of young-of-year in isolated pools. Adults were more numerous in upstream isolated pools, whereas young-of-year were more numerous in downstream isolated pools. Rate of channel drying had little effect on the numbers of adult Rio Grande silvery minnow in isolated pools, but more young-of-year were stranded when the rate of drying was faster. On average, pools persisted <4 days and 263 of 290 dried completely before continuous flows returned. Only 66 of 4,749 Rio Grande silvery minnow occurred in pools that did not dry completely.
  5. Rio Grande silvery minnow did not appear to escape channel intermittency; instead, they became stranded in shrinking isolated pools that did not persist long enough to act as refuges for fishes. Lack of refuge during channel intermittency would result in catastrophic mortality of fishes through complete desiccation of pools if there were no management actions, such as translocating fish. To increase persistence through streamflow intermittency, conservation actions should match the species response to intermittency by ensuring the availability of perennial-water refuges at the appropriate spatial and temporal scale.

When related species meet upon postglacial range expansion, hybrid zones are frequently formed. Theory predicts that such zones may move over the landscape until equilibrium conditions are reached. One hybrid zone observed to be moving in historical times (1950–1979) is that of the pond‐breeding salamanders Triturus cristatus and Triturus marmoratus in western France. We identified the ecological correlates of the species hybrid zone as elevation, forestation, and hedgerows favoring the more terrestrial T. marmoratus and pond density favoring the more aquatic T. cristatus. The past movement of the zone of ca. 30 km over three decades has probably been driven by the drastic postwar reduction of the “bocage” hedgerow landscape, favoring T. cristatus over T. marmoratus. No further hybrid zone movement was observed from 1979 to the present. To explain the changing dynamics of the hybrid zone, we propose that it stalled, either because an equilibrium was found at an altitude of ca. 140 m a.s.l. or due to pond loss and decreased population densities. While we cannot rule out the former explanation, we found support for the latter. Under agricultural intensification, ponds in the study area are lost at an unprecedented rate of 5.5% per year, so that remaining Triturus populations are increasingly isolated, hampering dispersal and further hybrid zone movement.  相似文献

Adaptive hypotheses based on interspecific comparisons can be tested by evaluating the context‐dependence of the behaviour of individual organisms. Drummond (Behaviour, 86, 1983, 1) categorized garter snake species (Thamnophis) as terrestrial–aquatic generalists or aquatic specialists based on diet and aquatic foraging behaviour. He hypothesized that the characteristic foraging behaviours of aquatic specialists – including frequent crawling on the underwater substrate and a high rate of underwater predatory strikes – are adaptations for feeding on relatively widely dispersed aquatic prey. Drummond's hypothesis based on interspecific comparisons suggests that individual snakes might change their foraging in the direction of aquatic specialist behaviour with an increase in water depth (which increases prey dispersion). I tested this prediction through laboratory observations of Mexican Pacific lowlands garter snakes (T. validus) feeding on minnows in shallow (2 cm) and deep (3–7 cm) water. Members of this species are appropriate subjects because they are ecologically intermediate between the generalists and aquatic specialists studied by Drummond, and thus might be expected to show more variation in aquatic foraging behaviour than those species. T. validus showed significantly higher frequencies of crawling on the underwater substrate and of underwater strikes in the deep water than in the shallow water; i.e. increased water depth shifted the behaviour of these snakes toward that of aquatic specialists, thus supporting Drummond's hypothesis. Individuals of an aquatic specialist species, the narrow‐headed garter snake (T. rufipunctatus), showed less pronounced changes in behaviour with increased water depth. Western ribbon snakes (T. proximus), which feed primarily at the land–water interface (and are expected to act like terrestrial–aquatic generalists), typically refused to feed in deep water. Interspecific differences in underwater visual acuity may underly the behavioural differences among the three species by determining whether changes in foraging behaviour with water depth are advantageous. Information on phylogenetic relationships suggests that the facultative behaviour of T. validus may represent an intermediate stage in the evolution of aquatic specialization.  相似文献

Aim Biodiversity patterns along altitudinal gradients are less studied in aquatic than terrestrial systems, even though aquatic sites provide a more homogeneous environment independent of moisture constraints. We studied the altitudinal species richness pattern for planktonic rotifers in freshwater lakes and identified the environmental predictors for which altitude is a proxy. Location Two hundred and eighteen lakes of Trentino–South Tyrol (Italy) in the eastern Alps; lakes covered 98% (range 65–2960 m above sea level) of the altitudinal gradient in the Alps. Methods We performed: (1) linear regression between species richness and altitude to evaluate the general pattern, (2) multiple linear regression between species richness and environmental predictors excluding altitude to identify the most important predictors, and (3) linear regression between the residuals of the best model of step (2) and altitude to investigate any additional explanatory power of altitude. Selection of environmental predictors was based on limnological importance and non‐parametric Spearman correlations. We applied ordinary least squares regression, generalized linear, and generalized least squares modelling to select the most statistically appropriate model. Results Rotifer species richness showed a monotonic decrease with altitude independent of scale effects. Species richness could be explained (R2= 51%) by lake area as a proxy for habitat diversity, reactive silica and total phosphorus as proxies for productivity, water temperature as a proxy for energy, nitrate as a proxy for human influence and north–south and east–west directions as covariates. These predictors completely accounted for the species richness–altitude pattern, and altitude had no additional effect on species richness. Main conclusions The linear decrease of species richness along the altitudinal gradient was related to the interplay of habitat diversity, productivity, heat content and human influence. These factors are the same in terrestrial and aquatic habitats, but the greater environmental stability of aquatic systems seems to favour a linear pattern.  相似文献

Nutrient cycles in both terrestrial and many freshwater habitats are fueled by terrestrial detritus. However, direct comparisons of decomposition processes in these environments are scarce. Aiming at shedding light on similarities and differences in these processes in different habitats, we studied decomposition of low-quality versus high-quality detritus through the action of shredders versus grazers in aquatic versus terrestrial microcosms under controlled climatic conditions. Decomposition processes were most strongly affected by whether they took place in the terrestrial or the aquatic environment: Leaching resulted in a rapid mass loss of detritus in the aquatic environment, and detritus traits became less pronounced over time. Thus, breakdown was mediated through dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water but through particulate organic matter (POM) on land. Litter mass loss and the promoting effects of detritivores on mass loss also depended on the environment, but shredders always had a greater effect than grazers. Both litter and detritivore diversity were overall of little relevance for litter mass loss, but more so in the aquatic than the terrestrial environment. By contrast, the influence of detritivores on microbes was stronger in water than on land, but effects depended on the litter type. The type of both litter and detritivores, however, was less significant in the aquatic than in the terrestrial environment, possibly due to leaching and abiotic processing of litter during early decomposition, resulting in diminishing differences between litter types. We conclude that the habitat type shapes the dynamics of leaf litter decomposition. Heavy leaching (in the aquatic environment) shortens initial decomposition phases and dislocates the degradation of easily accessible compounds in the form of DOM from the leaves into the water column. Consequently, initial interspecific differences in litter quality diminish, and both functional differences in, and diversity of, both litter and detritivores become less important than in the terrestrial environment.  相似文献

为了评估趋礁鱼类在岛礁海域的生境适宜度,选取马鞍列岛的褐菖鲉(Sebasticus marmoratus)为指示物种,以2009年获取的水深、盐度、叶绿素a、浊度和底质数据作为褐菖鲉春、冬季栖息地指示因子,建立栖息地适宜度曲线,并计算各站点的栖息地适宜性指数(HSI)。结果显示:1)绿华、花鸟、嵊山沿岸站点HSI普遍较低,枸杞岛、三横山、东库山沿岸站点褐菖鲉HSI相对较高,其中最大值1.0出现在枸杞岛沿岸的站点;2)春季褐菖鲉幼鱼的适宜水深在6 m左右,成鱼适宜在8—12 m的水深处生存;冬季褐菖鲉对8—12 m的水深适宜性良好;3)春季所有褐菖鲉的适宜盐度为30PSU,冬季幼鱼的适宜盐度为27—31PSU,成鱼的适宜盐度为27PSU、31PSU;4)随着叶绿素a和浊度值的增大,褐菖鲉适宜性逐渐降低。底质类型为岩时最适合褐菖鲉生存。5)相关分析显示,褐菖鲉丰度与底质类型相关性最大,而与叶绿素a、浊度呈显著负相关。研究结果表明,初级生产力和浑浊程度越高对褐菖鲉丰度抑制越明显。底质类型是褐菖鲉丰度分布的重要影响因子,其中分布有较多大型海藻的岩礁生境是其最适宜的栖息地。利用2010年春、冬季环境调查和渔获数据进行HSI模型验证,资源丰度随HSI值升高而增加,因此构建的模型可用于趋礁鱼类在岛礁海域的栖息地适宜性分析。  相似文献

A variety of mammalian lineages have secondarily invaded the water. To locomote and thermoregulate in the aqueous medium, mammals developed a range of morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptations. A distinct difference in the suite of adaptations, which affects energetics, is apparent between semiaquatic and fully aquatic mammals. Semiaquatic mammals swim by paddling, which is inefficient compared to the use of oscillating hydrofoils of aquatic mammals. Semiaquatic mammals swim at the water surface and experience a greater resistive force augmented by wave drag than submerged aquatic mammals. A dense, nonwettable fur insulates semiaquatic mammals, whereas aquatic mammals use a layer of blubber. The fur, while providing insulation and positive buoyancy, incurs a high energy demand for maintenance and limits diving depth. Blubber contours the body to reduce drag, is an energy reserve, and suffers no loss in buoyancy with depth. Despite the high energetic costs of a semiaquatic existence, these animals represent modern analogs of evolutionary intermediates between ancestral terrestrial mammals and their fully aquatic descendants. It is these intermediate animals that indicate which potential selection factors and mechanical constraints may have directed the evolution of more derived aquatic forms.  相似文献

The extent and ecological significance of trophic linkages across ecosystem boundaries have been the subject of considerable recent research attention. North American beavers Castor canadensis engineer terrestrial influences in aquatic ecosystems by constructing terrestrial food caches near their lodges and aquatic influences in terrestrial ecosystems by building dams and flooding low lying areas. However, it is poorly resolved to what extent beavers rely on aquatic food sources and whether this reliance is greater during winter when ice cover physically confines beavers to aquatic habitats or during summer when warm, ice free water promotes the growth and accessibility of aquatic vegetation. Working in a subarctic region, we surveyed the abundance of aquatic and terrestrial food sources in and around lotic and lentic environments and estimated their contributions to beaver diets during open water and ice covered periods using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis of hair samples. Ponds had four times more aquatic vegetation than streams, but terrestrial habitats around ponds had less than half as much shrub cover as habitats adjacent to streams. Beaver diets in this subarctic environment are estimated to be comprised of 60 to 80% aquatic vegetation, with beavers occupying ponds consuming more aquatic vegetation in winter than beavers occupying streams, which rely more on terrestrial shrubs cached near their lodge. Collectively, these results show how the influence of physical barriers on ecosystem linkages can be modified by habitat‐ and season‐specific abundances of preferred resources and the potential for animals to consume food in ecosystems and seasons different from where and when the food was harvested.  相似文献

Littorella uniflora (L.) Ascherson is a small, perennial, amphibious rhizophyte of rosette life-form which is common along the margins of lakes, tarns and reservoirs where water-level fluctuations are often rapid and unpredictable. The majority of plants are continuously submersed and reproduce vegetatively, but a small proportion become completely emersed for variable lengths of time, when flowering and seed set occur. To find out how L. uniflora adjusts to sudden emersion we studied the plants at a reservoir where water level falls each spring and remains low throughout the summer; L. uniflora adjusted very quickly showing a degree of phenotypic plasticity not expected in a 'stress tolerator', including the production of a new set of terrestrial leaves with reduced lacunal volume and increased stomatal density, a rapid increase in leaf growth rate, and flowering within 3–4 wk. Comparison of terrestrial L. uniflora with aquatic plants growing permanently submersed in lake and tarn habitats showed that three to fourfold more carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) was incorporated into above-ground biomass by emersed plants. However, ramet production in the aquatic environment appeared to be more costly, in terms of C and N invested, than terrestrial flower and seed production. The combination of continuous, submersed vegetative spread with the capacity for a high degree of phenotypic plasticity allowing some flower and seed production to occur during brief periods of emersion seems to account for the success of this plant in the amphibious niche.  相似文献

The transitions between ecosystems (ecotones) are often biodiversity hotspots, but we know little about the forces that shape them. Today, often sharp boundaries with low diversity are found between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This has been attributed to environmental factors that hamper succession. However, ecosystem properties are often controlled by both bottom-up and top-down forces, but their relative importance in shaping riparian boundaries is not known. We hypothesize that (1) herbivores may enforce sharp transitions between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems by inhibiting emergent vegetation expansion and reducing the width of the transition zone and (2) the vegetation expansion, diversity, and species turnover are related to abiotic factors in the absence of herbivores, but not in their presence. We tested these hypotheses in 50 paired grazed and ungrazed plots spread over ten wetlands, during two years. Excluding grazers increased vegetation expansion, cover, biomass, and species richness. In ungrazed plots, vegetation cover was negatively related to water depth, whereas plant species richness was negatively related to the vegetation N:P ratio. The presence of (mainly aquatic) herbivores overruled the effect of water depth on vegetation cover increase but did not interact with vegetation N:P ratio. Increased local extinction in the presence of herbivores explained the negative effect of herbivores on species richness, as local colonization rates were unaffected by grazing. We conclude that (aquatic) herbivores can strongly inhibit expansion of the riparian vegetation and reduce vegetation diversity over a range of environmental conditions. Consequently, herbivores enforce sharp boundaries between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Temnospondyls were a successful group of early tetrapods that lived during the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic periods. Different ecomorphotypes were present (terrestrial, amphibious and fully aquatic) with a wide range of lifestyles. Herein, we analysed several clades of temnospondyls using geometric morphometrics, Finite Element Analysis, and comparative phylogenetic analysis. Some temnospondyli clades were 'crocodilomorph' feeding analogues. The skull analysis reveals a concordance between form and feeding function, in amphibious and fully aquatic feeders. The form of terrestrial feeders could be consequences of adaptative or phylogenetical constraints. Basal temnospondyls, as edopoids, were able to leave the water and feed on land. Eryopids continued as terrestrial feeders, although some members showed a shift to increased aquatic feeding. The aquatic environment was especially occupied by archegosaurs during the Permian. After the Permo-Triassic extinction, trematosaurs and capitosaurs returned to the aquatic environment and their members were amphibious and fully aquatic feeders until their disappearance.  相似文献
