Food habits, net-spinning activity, and whole-animal mercury concentrations in Hydropsyche morosa Hagan were examined monthly over a one year period on the South River, Virginia. Gut content analysis revealed seasonal patterns in the consumption of food that was correlated with net-spinning activity. Between April and October, when feeding nets were widespread, detritus represented between 72 and 94% of the total volume of food material found in the guts, while algae represented less than 18%. However, between November and March, when feeding nets were rare or absent, the relative contribution of each of the three food types (i.e., detritus, algae, and animal) changed significantly. Detritus declined to between 51 and 60%, and algae increased to between 39 and 47% of the total food volume. Whole-animal mercury concentrations ranged from 0.14 to 1.20 µg g–1 and were significantly higher in the summer. Seasonal differences were not related to environmental mercury levels and only weakly related to body size. In contrast, whole-animal mercury levels were strongly related to seasonal changes in diet. In summer, when H. morosa larvae were filtering highly contaminated seston, whole-animal mercury levels were high. Conversely, in winter, when larvae were grazing less contaminated algae, whole-animal mercury levels were significantly lower. The primary component of seston was detritus (>81%) throughout the year. Therefore, the high mercury concentration in seston was probably associated with detritus. As a result, a significant relationship was observed between whole-animal mercury concentration and the relative amount of detritus consumed. These patterns indicate that in streams with highly productive hydropsychid populations, the rate of processing of mercury and other heavy metals may be related to seasonal changes in feeding behavior.  相似文献

A mathematical model based on assumptions of proportionality of filter-feeding insect larvae and their food supply and of the ability of the larvae to substantially reduce the sestonic food supply was developed. The predictions of the model were tested by censusing simuliid blackfly larvae in the outlet stream of a mesotrophic lake. Observed trends in simuliid density agree closely with the predictions. Two seston components (diatoms, detritus) increase downstream contrary to prediction. Potential predators of simuliids were censumed. Isoperla spp. decreased with increasing distance below the lake while the perlid stoneflies Calineuria and Hesperoperla seemed to be excluded from the outfall region.  相似文献

The chlorophyll content of seston at four sites in a regulated mid-order Rocky Mountain river, Henry's Fork of the Snake River, Idaho, USA, was examined. Spectrometry was used to determine the amount of chlorophyll a, b, c and in seston and potential organic matter sources including macrophytes, algae, plankton, and terrestial plant litter. The amount of chlorophyll in seston varied among size fractions, sites, and seasons. Coarse seston (6–1 mm) contained the most chlorophyll a (2.3 mg g–1 ashfree dry mass [AFDM]) followed by ultra fine seston (53–0.3 µm; 1.9 mg g–1 AFDM), very coarse seston (> 6 mm, 1.8 mg g–1 AFDM), very fine seston (250–53 µm; 1.3 mg g–1 AFDM), and fine seston (1–0.25 mm; 0.7 mg g–1 AFDM). Chlorophyll content of coarse seston was similar at all sites reflecting a common source, aquatic macrophyte debris. Chlorophyll content of coarse and fine seston were highest in fall reflecting the importance of phenology of aquatic plants on sestonic pigment levels. Very fine seston from below a reservoir contained more chlorophyll than seston from downstream and tributary sites suggesting a reservoir source. Terrestial plant litter was chlorophyll depleted compared to autochthonous materials and seston. Most seston was autochthonously-derived from a variety of macrophyte, algal, and planktonic sources. The chlorophyll content of Henry's Fork seston was higher than that reported for similar rivers. Island Park Dam moderates river temperature and flow, enhances autotrophy, and accounts for the consistently high sestonic chlorophyll levels.  相似文献

Food preferences of tanypodinae larvae (Diptera: Chironomidae)   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Analyses of the gut contents of larvae of three species of Tanypodinae, collected from four sites in north-east England and Scotland, invariably showed small particles (1–10 µm2), predominantly of detritus, to be more abundant than large particles (10–100 µm2), mostly algae and diatoms. No animal remains, such as carapaces, head capsules and chaetae, or vascular plant fragments were found in any of the intestines. In contrast, food-choice and growth experiments suggested that animal food (particularly Tubificidae and Chironominae larvae) was important in the tanypod diet. In the food-choice experiments, six different foods offered to small (4–7 mm long) and to large (8–12 mm long) larvae of Procladius choreus Meigen, were chosen in the following order: live Tubificidae spp.; detritus; live Chironominae larvae; a mixture of algae and diatoms; live Ostracoda spp.; and live Cladocera spp. However, when the results of the individual choices were examined, it was clear that the small larvae had consumed greater amounts of the small types of food (i.e. detritus, algae and diatoms) in comparison to the large larvae. In the growth experiment, those larvae of P. choreus reared solely on Tubificidae, detritus or Chironominae larvae thrived, while those fed on algae and diatoms, ostracods or cladocerans grew more slowly and fewer survived the experimental period. It was concluded that although Tanypodinae larvae are primarily predators with definite food preferences in ideal foraging conditions, in adverse conditions they will utilize a range of available stand-by foods, the most important of which appears to be detritus.  相似文献

Seston in the impounded North Anna River (NAR) was analyzed and compared to that in the free-flowing South Anna River (SAR) in Virginia, U.S.A. A wet filtration technique was used to separate seston into five size classes. The overall quantity of organic seston was much lower in the NAR than in the SAR. The seston in the NAR was composed of more living organisms, in particular zooplankters in the medium large (234–864 µm) and small (105–234 µm) size classes and diatoms and other algae in the fine (43–105 µm) and very fine (25–43 µm) size classes. The percentage of zooplankton declined sharply before reaching the downstream study site (32 km). The seston in the NAR tended to consist of slightly larger particles, but 80–85% of the seston in both rivers was in the ultrafine (0.45–25 µm) size class, which was almost entirely composed of detritus. One indication of seston food quality, the organic/inorganic ratio, was considerably higher for the medium large and small size classes in the NAR immediately below the dam and for the fine and very fine size classes farther downstream. Another indication of food quality, the usable caloric content, showed that the seston in the NAR contained considerably less total assimilable energy as far as 32 km downstream from the dam, but that the medium large and small size classes were rich in assimilable energy immediately below the dam because of zooplankton released from the reservoir. Thus, the overall quantity and quality of seston was lower in the NAR, but the quality of the seston, for at least a short distance below the dam, was higher in a well-defined size range that can be effectively utilized by certain filter feeders.  相似文献

Ingestion and assimilation rates of Euchlanis dilatata lucksiana Hauer, isolated from Lake Loosdrecht (The Netherlands) and cultured on lake water (seston < 33 µm), were measured in the laboratory using the 14C-tracer technique. The five taxa used as tracer foods, together with 6–7 mg C l–1 of lake seston in each case, included four species of filamentous cyanobacteria (Oscillatoria redekei, O. limnetica, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Anabaena PCC 7120) and a prochlorophyte (Prochlorothrix hollandica). Except Anabaena, they are all commonly encountered in eutrophic Loosdrecht lakes, including Lake Loosdrecht, and their dimensions ranged between 150 and 250 µm in length and 2 and 3.5 µm in width. The small and large Euchlanis used as experimental animals had mean lengths of 217–223 µm and 276–305 µm, respectively. Euchlanis fed on all the taxa offered as food. Clearance rates ranged from 51 to 99 µl ind–1 d–1 for the large animals and from 22 to 41 µl ind–1 d–1 for the small animals. The highest ingestion rate observed, 1.7 µg ind–1 d–1, was for the large animals feeding on Aphanizomenon. The daily ration for both size classes far exceeded 100% of body weight, reaching up to 690% for the small animals feeding on Aphanizomenon. The small animals generally appeared to assimilate the ingested food more efficiently (assimilation efficiencies: 37–100%) than the large animals (34–77%). Compared with an earlier study in which only lake seston (<33 µm) was used as food, the specific clearance rates of Euchlanis on the cyanobacteria and Prochlorothrix were generally somewhat lower.  相似文献

We used multiple analytical methods to demonstrate resource partitioning in five species of coexisting endemic gastropods in the family Baicaliidae and the genus Megalovalvata (Valvatidae) in rocky walls of the underwater canyons in Lake Baikal. We tested whether filter-feeding baicaliids and valvatids consume and assimilate different food using data from gut contents, stable δ13C and δ15N isotopes and radular morphology, with subsequent combined analyses. Our results showed that the four baicaliid species assimilate microalgae, diatoms and bacteria, whereas the single Megalovalvata species mostly assimilates plant detritus. The δ15N variations in the baicaliids reflect differences in their digestion of seston components, whereas the δ13C similarity illustrates consumption of food particles derived from similar primary producers. Gut contents in the baicaliids were dominated by a single species of planktonic diatom, although more than 30 species of microalgae were recorded in all seasons. However, the composition and quantity of additional food particles varied by species. Our results showed that baicaliids have significant fine scale differences in radular tooth morphology, which may allow partitioning of food resources.  相似文献

Biomanipulation measures in lakes, taken to diminish algal blooms, have mainly been restricted to the reduction of zooplanktivorous fish with the aim to stimulate the grazing pressure by native filter feeders such as Daphnia. However, larger filter feeders like the exotic zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, have been suggested as an optional tool because of their high filtering capacity. We compared grazing by two filter feeders, D. polymorpha and Daphnia galeata, offered seston from Lake IJsselmeer, the Netherlands in two consecutive years: 2002 and 2003. The seston in both years was dominated by the colony-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. The grazing studies were performed under controlled conditions in the laboratory and samples were analyzed on a flow cytometer, making it possible to quantify grazing on different seston components and size fractions, including cyanobacteria, other phytoplankton (green algae, diatoms, etc.), and detritus. No differences in clearance rates, on a per weight basis, were found between the two grazer species. The clearance rate on cyanobacteria (especially <20 μm) was lower in 2003 than in 2002. In 2003, the microcystin concentration of cyanobacteria was higher than in 2002, suggesting that the observed lower clearance rate in 2003 was due to the enhanced toxin content of the cyanobacteria. Zebra mussels, although indiscriminately filtering all seston groups out of the water, positively selected for phytoplankton in their mantle cavity, irrespective of its toxicity, and rejected detritus. Since no differences in clearance rates were found between the two grazer species, we conclude that for biomanipulation purposes of shallow lakes, native species like the daphnids should be preferred over exotic species like zebra mussels. When the seston is dominated by phytoplankton that cannot be filtered out of the water column by Daphnia, however, the use of zebra mussels may be considered. Care should be taken, however, in the choice of the lakes since the mussels may have severe ecological and economic impacts.  相似文献

Larval production of ten species of Hydropsychidae and Philipotamidae was studied at six stations along 6.4 km of a southern Appalachian stream, encompassing stream orders 1–4 and a 600 m elevation change. Species-specific production estimates ranged from 23–983 mg AFDM m?2 yr?1 These low values are attributed to the paucity of nutrients in these undisturbed headwater streams which reduces detrital food quality, algal growth, and production of smaller invertebrates eaten by hydropsychids. Animal food supported the majority of hydropsychid production (72%); philopotamids relied primarily on fine detritus (80%) and diatoms (15%). The contribution of animal food to caddisfly production decreased downstream, while the relative importance of filamentous algae and diatoms increased. These changes reflect the downstream decline of more carnivorous species, as well as increased primary production which accompanies the shift in lotic community metabolism from heterotrophy towards autotrophy with increasing stream order. Net-spinning caddisflies had a minor impact on seston quantity, consuming only 0.0003%-0.005% of the total seston (including invertebrate drift) passing over a m2 of substrate annually. In contrast, the percentage of invertebrate drift consumed was, on the average, > 400 × higher than total seston consumption. These insects influence seston quality rather than quantity. The percentage of total seston and animal drift consumed declined downstream, indicating that turnover lengths of these materials increase with stream order. Longer turnover lengths or “spirals” result from changes in the physical characteristics of the stream, i.e., increasing discharge and stream power and decreasing numbers of retention devices (i.e., organic debris dams), which increase the downstream transport velocity of seston. Higher transport velocities reduce the rates at which these filter feeding caddisflies can process the organic inputs to a given reach of stream. Small streams (orders 1–3) appear to be most responsible for efficient processing of a stream's energy inputs.  相似文献

This paper reports on seasonal changes in stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of seston and muscle tissue of silver carp and bighead carp during 2004 and 2005, focusing primarily on the carbon sources and trophic relationships among phytoplankton, zooplankton and silver carp and bighead carp in a large fish pen of Meiliang Bay (Lake Taihu, China). δ13C showed a minimal value in March 2005 and a maximal value in August 2005 in seston both inside and outside the pen, whereas δ15N of seston showed the minimum in winter and the maximum during algal blooms. A positive correlation between δ13C of silver carp and that of seston suggested that temporal variation of δ13C in seston was preserved in fish via the food chain. The differences of δ13C among seston, zooplankton and muscle tissue of silver carp and bighead carp ranged only 0.2–1.7%, indicating that plankton production was the primary food source of filter-feeding fishes. According to a mass balance model, we estimated that the contributions of zooplankton to the diets of silver carp and bighead carp were 45.7% and 54.3%, respectively, based on the δ15N values of zooplankton and planktivorous fishes.  相似文献

Feeding habits and dietary overlap of three species of naidid oligochaetes (Chaetogaster diastrophus, Dero digitata, Dero nivea) were studied during June 1982–December 1983 from a bog stream in Wisconsin, USA. Chaetogaster diastrophus primarily ingested diatoms, while D. digitata and D. nivea primarily ingested detritus. Dietary overlap was substantial (97–98%) between D. digitata and D. nivea using the dietary overlap coefficient. Dietary overlap between C. diastrophus and D. digitata was 58–62% and that between C. diastrophus and D. nivea was 51–55%. Dietary differences existed between the three species in the percentage of each major food type and diatom genera ingested, selective ingestion or avoidance of diatom genera and in the size classes (length and/or volume) of diatoms consumed. These data suggest temporal coexistence of these species may possibly be due to complex food resource partitioning, although in this habitat, C. diastrophus, D. digitata, and D. nivea did not exhibit concurrent peak abundances; thus, interspecific competition for food was minimized.  相似文献

Summary From June 1968 to late May, 1969 collections of more than 20,600 immature Trichoptera were made from the St. Vrain River of Colorado. Agapetus sp., Arctopsyche grandis, Brachycentrus americanus, Ecclisomyia maculosa, Hydropsyche sp., Hydropsyche occidentalis, Helicopsyche borealis, Leptocella sp., Neothremma alicia, Rhyacophila acropedes, and Sortosa sp. were taken at eight sites ranging from 1565 to 3200 m in altitude. The Trichoptera of the St. Vrain exhibited a distinct altitudinal zonation with Zone I (1565 m) dominated by Leptocella, Hydropsyche sp., and Helicopsyche borealis; Zone II (1750 to 2350 m) was dominated by Brachycentrus americanus and Hydropsyche occidentalis; Zone III (2350 m) was considered a transitional area. In Zone IV (2650 m) and Zone V (2950 to 3250 m ) Neothremma alicia and Arctopsyche grandis were the most successful genera, respectively. Temperature is proposed as the major variable controlling attitudinal zonation.Standing crop productivity of Trichoptera was determined from timed collections and expressed as population density (number of organisms collected per 30 minutes) and organic biomass (dry organic matter represented by organisms collected per 30 minutes). Intermediate altitudes (2300 m) exhibited the lowest productivity but greatest species diversity. Highest productivity occurred below 1600 m but organic biomass was surprisingly high above 2900 m. Changes in productivity in relation to altitude are discussed in relation to temperature, food availability, severe flooding, and other variables. Productivity on a yearly basis was found to be greatest in spring and at minimum levels during autumn and early winter. The holometabolous life cycle of Trichoptera, temperature, and current seem to be the major governing factors of seasonal productivity.  相似文献

The phosphorus cycle in the ecosystem of the shallow, hypertrophic Loosdrecht lakes (The Netherlands) was simulated by means of the dynamic eutrophication model PCLOOS. The model comprises three algal groups, zooplankton, fish, detritus, zoobenthos, sediment detritus and some inorganic phosphorus fractions. All organic compartments are modelled in two elements, carbon and phosphorus. Within the model system, the phosphorus cycle is considered as completely closed. Carbon and phosphorus are described independently, so that the dynamics of the P/C ratios can be modelled. The model has been partly calibrated by a method based on Bayesian statistics combined with a Range Check procedure.Simulations were carried out for Lake Loosdrecht for the periods before and after the restoration measures in 1984, which reduced the external phosphorus loading to the lake from ca. 2 mgP m–2 d–1 to 1 mgP m–2 d–1. The model outcome was largely comparable withthe measured data. Total phosphorus has slowly decreased from an average 130 µgP l–1 to ca. 80 µgP l–1, but chlorophyll-a (ca. 150 µg 1–1, summer-averaged) and seston concentrations (8–15 mgC 1–1) hardly changed since the restoration measures. About two-thirds of the seston consisted of detritus, while the phytoplankton remained dominated by filamentous cyanobacteria. The P/C ratio of the seston decreased from ca. 1.0% to 0.7%, while the P/C ratios of zooplankton, zoobenthos and fish have remained constant and are much higher. The system showed a delayed response to the decreased phosphorus loading until a new equilibrium was reached in ca. five years. Major reasons for the observed resilience of the lake in responding to the load reduction are the high phosphorus assimilation efficiency of the cyanobacteria and the high internal recycling of phosphorus. A further reduction of nutrient loading, perhaps in combination with additional measures like biomanipulation, will be the most fruitful additional restoration measure.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of seston (small-size fraction, < 50 m) and of Daphnia galeata, Bythotrephes longimanusand adult individuals of Leptodora kindtii was analysed in the summer of 1997. When comparing the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) content of seston with Daphnia, Daphnia with Bythotrephes; Daphniawith Leptodora, we found similarities in the dynamics of EPA accumulation, in most cases. The content of EPA in seston was found to be significantly correlated with numerical abundance of small diatoms (r =0.662).Maximally the % EPA increased from seston (traces – 4% of total fatty acids) to Daphnia (traces – 12.2%). Both the lower and upper relative EPA contents were higher in Bythotrephes (10.8–16%), whereas the maximum value was lower in Leptodora (0.4–6.3%) compared to Daphnia. Correlation coefficients between the EPA content of the organisms at different trophic levels were not significant. The existence of species-specific differences in accumulation and /or transformation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in freshwater crustaceans is proposed.  相似文献

Feeding of Euchlanis dilatata lucksiana, a brachionid rotifer isolated from the Loosdrecht Lakes (The Netherlands), was examined in the laboratory using 14C-labelled food. The gut-filling time at a food concentration of 9.6 µg C ml–1 was about 15 minutes. Animals which were fed on 3 size fractions of the lake seston (< 7 µm, 7–15 µm, and 15–33 µm) showed a clear preference (Jacobs' selectivity index) for the largest size fraction. This fraction was composed predominantly of filamentous cyanobacteria. For animals weighing 0.37–0.49 µm C ind.–1 the daily ration (daily food consumption per unit body weight × 100) ranged from 50 to 100% at food levels of 2 mg C l–1 and below, but increased to 150–250% at food concentrations of 5 mg C l–1 and above. The assimilation efficiency was 100% up to 5 mg C l–1 of food, but decreased to about 80% at higher food levels.  相似文献

Evidence for the influence of food type and heavy metals on shell growth and fertility is presented for a freshwater population of the snail P. jenkinsi. When fed an excess of lettuce or lamb heart (protein source), growth rates were higher for lettuce. Highest growth rates occurred at a diet of lettuce plus lamb heart. Fertility was favoured by a diet of lamb heart. When fed an excess of lettuce, the EC50 growth values were 16 µg Cd l–1, 13 µg Cu l–1, and 103 µg Zn l–1 in lake water; snail fertility was inhibited at 25 µg Cd l–1 and 30 µg Cu l–1. A diet of lake detritus spiked with Cd or Cu resulted in a decrease of approximately 50% in growth rates, when compared with growth on non-spiked detritus. Spiked detritus lost metals into lake water. Food type positively interacted with metal stress, both for growth rate and fertility. The assessment of inhibitory effects of detritus contaminated either in the field or, notably, by spiking, and serving as food source for deposit feeders is hampered by sampling problems in the field and by redistribution processes of pollutants between particles and water in laboratory-scale experiments.  相似文献

Allochthonous inputs of detritus represent an important energy source for streams in forested regions, but dynamics of these materials are not well studied in neotropical headwater streams. As part of the tropical amphibian declines in streams (TADS) project, we quantified benthic organic matter standing stocks and organic seston dynamics in four Panamanian headwater streams, two with (pre-amphibian decline) and two without (post-decline) healthy amphibian assemblages. We also measured direct litterfall and lateral litter inputs in two of these streams. Continuous litterfall and monthly benthic samples were collected for 1 year, and seston was collected 1–3 times/month for 1 year at or near baseflow. Direct litterfall was similar between the two streams examined, ranging from 934–1,137 g DM m−2 y−1. Lateral inputs were lower, ranging from 140–187 g DM m−1 y−1. Dead leaves (57–60%), wood (24–29%), and green leaves (8–9%) contributed most to inputs, and total inputs were generally higher during the rainy season. Annual habitat-weighted benthic organic matter standing stocks ranged from 101–171 g AFDM m−2 across the four study reaches, with ∼4 × higher values in pools compared to erosional habitats. Total benthic organic matter (BOM) values did not change appreciably with season, but coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM, >1 mm) generally decreased and very fine particulate organic matter (VFPOM, 1.6–250 μm) generally increased during the dry season. Average annual seston concentrations ranged from 0.2–0.6 mg AFDM l−1 (fine seston, <754 μm >250 μm) and 2.0–4.7 mg AFDM l−1 (very fine, <250 μm >1.6 μm), with very fine particles composing 85–92% of total seston. Quality of fine seston particles in the two reaches where tadpoles were present was significantly higher (lower C/N) than the two where tadpoles had been severely reduced (P = 0.0028), suggesting that ongoing amphibian declines in this region are negatively influencing the quality of particles exported from headwaters. Compared to forested streams in other regions, these systems receive relatively high amounts of allochthonous litter inputs but have low in-stream storage. Handling editor: J. Padisak  相似文献

Feeding habits of Perla grandis (Rambur) nymphs have been investigated in the Rio Berga, an Apenninic stream of Northwestern Italy. In this study, we analysed gut contents of 50 nymphs of this species, with the aim to investigate feeding preferences. Nymphs were collected from a single riffle, of which benthic coenosis was also determined. We detected a change in the diet during ontogenesis, with small instars feeding mainly on detritus and large instars strictly carnivorous. We also detected the existence of an evident trophic selection: diet was almost entirely dominated by Chironomidae, independently from their availability on the substratum. This finding is discussed on the basis of ecological and ethological considerations.  相似文献

1. Selective grazing of adults and larvae of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) on phytoplankton and detritus from both laboratory cultures and natural seston was quantified using flow cytometry. 2. Mean clearance rate of adult zebra mussels was higher on a mixture of the green alga Scenedesmus and the cyanobacterium Microcystis than when Scenedesmus was offered as single food, suggesting selective feeding by the mussels. 3. Feeding on lake seston both adults and larvae showed a higher clearance rate on phytoplankton than on detritus particles, suggesting that zebra mussels select for phytoplankton. Furthermore, it was noted that adults preferred seston particles in the 0–1 and 30–100 μm size ranges. 4. In our study, zebra mussels did not discriminate against cyanobacteria, and our results indicate that they may even ingest them preferentially.
