Summary It is shown that it is possible to obtain an indication of the parental value of heterozygous cultivars of potatoes for the characters breeders' preference, total tuber weight, mean tuber weight and number of tubers. Three methods of predicting the characteristics of progeny produced from particular parental cultivars were examined, namely: univariate cross prediction (based on mean and variance), mid-parent values and mid-self values. All provided some indication of which crosses would give superior progeny, but univariate cross prediction gave rankings which correlated most highly with observed performance in the second clonal year for the characters breeders' preference and total tuber weight. Interestingly, mid-self values gave the best predictions in the case of mean tuber weight and number of tubers. It is suggested that such predictions of parental value, especially when based on univariate cross prediction at the seedling stage, are worth carrying out in practical breeding programmes.  相似文献

Identification of superior parents in a potato breeding programme   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Summary An incomplete diallel cross was used to study components of genetic variation in potatoes for a range of characters after early and late harvest. The progenies were also used to evaluate five predictors of progeny performance, namely the mean seedling performance, the mid-parent value and the means of the selfed progenies, of the diploid progenies and of the test-cross progenies. For almost all characters, the general combining ability effects were predominant, although the specific combining ability effects present were greater at late than at early harvests. The seedling performance for tuber yield, number of tubers and average tuber weight did not show any relevant relationship to the field performance. The midparent value provided, in general, satisfactory predictions of the mean progeny performance obtained in the diallel, except for ware tuber yield. The selfed and the diploid progenies did not improve the prediction of progeny means compared to the mid-parent value. The predictions based on the test-crosses surpassed those of the mid-parent value, particularly for tuber yield at ware potato harvest. Methods to identify superior parents are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Combining ability studies for grain yield and its primary component traits in diallel crosses involving seven diverse wheat cultivars of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) over generations F1-F5 are reported. The general and specific combining ability variances were significant in all generations for all the traits except specific combining ability variance for number of spikes per plant in the F5. The ratio of general to specific combining ability variances was significant for all the traits except grain yield in all the generations. This indicated an equal role of additive and non-additive gene effects in the inheritance of grain yield, and the predominance of the former for its component traits. The presence of significant specific combining ability variances in even the advanced generations may be the result of an additive x additive type of epistasis or evolutionary divergence among progenies in the same parental array. The relative breeding values of the parental varieties, as indicated by their general combining ability effects, did not vary much over the generations. The cheap and reliable procedure observed for making the choice of parents, selecting hybrids and predicting advanced generation (F5) bulk hybrid performance was the determination of breeding values of the parents on the relative performance of their F2 progeny bulks.  相似文献

Repeatabilities of progeny means, and the univariate cross prediction method were used to study the effectiveness of progeny selection for agronomically important characters in early generations of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) breeding. The study was based on 90 progenies (72 crosses+18 selfs) evaluated for three successive generations, i.e. seedling, first clonal and second clonal generations. Repeatabilities of progeny means were measured as correlation coefficients between generations. In the univariate cross prediction method, progeny means and within-progeny standard deviations were used to calculate the proportions of clones exceeding the target values, and correlation coefficients between generations for predicted and observed proportions of clones, were calculated. Population means varied from generation to generation. Correlation coefficients between generations for progeny means for most of the characters were significant, but moderate. These were higher than the correlation coefficients between predicted and observed proportions of clones exceeding the target values. The possibility of using progeny means as a selection parameter to reduce the number of genotypes to be examined in later stages by rejecting the poor crosses in seedling generation is discussed. Summary The ability to predict agronomic performance of progeny from a cross would be a great benefit to plant breeders in selecting parents. The predictive value of parental genetic relationships estimating F1 progeny means and F4 family variances of nine argronomic traits was tested in 76 oat crosses, using genetic distance measures based on coefficients-of-parentage, quantitatively inherited morphological characters, and discretely inherited biochemical and morphological characters. Coefficients-of-parentage were better predictors of F1 performance than similarity measures derived from plant morphology or discretely inherited characters. Combined distance measures were better estimators of F1 specific combining ability (SCA) effects than any single measure. Among cultivars of similar adaptation and quantitative morphology, crosses between parents with high coefficients-of-parentage gave higher SCA effect values than crosses of distantly related parents for grain yield and total biomass. The opposite was found for crosses among cultivars of different adaptation or quantitative morphology. The best predictor of trait variances among F4 families was coefficients-of-parentage. Crosses between more distantly related parents produced larger variances among families than crosses between closely related parents for plant biomass. For grain yield, test weight, heading date, grain filling period, and maturity date, crosses between more closely related parents produced larger among-family variances than crosses of distantly related parents. Crosses between more distantly related parents involved at least one parent unadapted to central New York, and resulted in most of the progeny being generally unadapted. This, in part, may account for the low genetic variances for heading date, test weight, and grain yield in crosses of distantly related parents.  相似文献

Taro (Colocasia esculenta) breeding, as other root crop breeding, is based on the production and evaluation of large numbers of hybrids. The selection of parents is based on their phenotypic value in the absence of information concerning general combining ability (GCA), specific combining ability (SCA), or genetic distances between varieties. By combining data from heritability trials and from genetic diversity studies conducted with AFLP and SSR markers, we aimed at studying the relationship between hybrid vigour and genetic dissimilarity between parents. The traits studied included number of suckers, corm weight, corm dimensions, and dry matter content. Correlation coefficients between hybrid gain and dissimilarity values were calculated. The prediction of hybrid performance based on the mid-parent value was compared to the prediction based on a modified expression that takes into account the genetic relationships between parents. Correlations were all but one positive but not statistically significant for all traits, with the exception of the number of suckers, when using SSR markers for dissimilarity calculations. Accordingly, the genetic dissimilarities in the prediction of hybrid performances did not increase the correlation between predicted and observed hybrid vigour values. However, large differences were observed among the residual means from the regression between predicted and observed values when using AFLP or SSR markers, mainly due to the much higher polymorphism revealed by the latter. Models need to be further adapted to the type of molecular marker used, since their ability to reveal different rates of polymorphism will have a direct incidence on the calculation of genetic dissimilarities between genotypes. Nevertheless, since SSR markers are more polymorphic and more informative than AFLP markers, they should be preferentially used for these studies. Low genetic dissimilarity of parents yielded weak heterosis effects and future studies need to be conducted by using a broader genetic base. This is the first study assessing the relationship of hybrid vigour with the genetic distances between parents, conducted on a tropical root crop.  相似文献

The genetic distance analysis for selection of suitable parents has been established and effectively used in many crops; however, there is dearth of conclusive report of relationship of genetic distance analysis with heterosis in sesame. In the present study, an attempt was made to estimate the associations of genetic distances using SSR (GDSSR), seed-storage protein profiling (GDSDS) and agro-morphological traits (GDMOR) with hybrid performance. Seven parents were selected from 60 exotic and Indian genotypes based on genetic distance from clustering pattern based on SSR, seed-storage protein, morphological traits and per se performance. For combining ability analysis, 7 parents and 21 crosses generated from 7 × 7 half diallel evaluated at two environments in a replicated field trial during pre-kharif season of 2013. Compared with the average parents yield (12.57 g plant?1), eight hybrids had a significant (P < 0.01) yield advantage across environments, with averages of 26.94 and 29.99% for better-parent heterosis (BPH) and mid-parent heterosis (MPH), respectively, across environments. Highly significant positive correlation was observed between specific combining ability (SCA) and per se performance (0.97), while positive non-significant correlation of BPH with GDSSR (0.048), and non-significant negative correlations with GDMOR (? 0.01) and GDSDS (? 0.256) were observed. The linear regressions of SCA on MPH, BPH and per se performance of F1s were significant with R2 value of 0.88, 0.84 and 0.95 respectively. The present findings revealed a weak association of GDSSR with F1’s performance; however, SCA has appeared as an important factor in the determination of heterosis and per se performance of the hybrids. The present findings also indicated that parental divergence in the intermediate group would likely produce high heterotic crosses in sesame.  相似文献

Our knowledge of the genetics of resistance to the pink stem borer ( Sesamia nonagrioides ) in maize ( Zea mays ) is restricted to a few crosses among maize inbreds. The objectives of this study were to enlarge our understanding of the genetics of traits related to damage by pink stem borer and yield under infestation and to use generation means analyses to compare per se and testcross performance for detecting epistatic effects. All generations, either per se or crossed to testers, were evaluated in a 10 × 10 triple lattice design under artificial infestation with S. nonagrioides in 2005 and 2006. Most traits fit an additive–dominance model; but evidence for epistasis for resistance and yield under infestation was shown. Epistasis, in general, did not appear to play an important role in the inheritance of yield under pink stem borer infestation. However, the epistasis contribution to maize yield performance could be important in some outstanding crosses such as EP42 × A637. Testcross generation means revealed epistatic effects undetected by the generation means analysis, but neither method was able to eliminate dominance effects that could prevail over epistatic effects.  相似文献

Identification of heterotic groups and patterns among breeding populations provides fundamental information to help plant breeders more knowledgeably manipulate heterosis. A diallel analysis was conducted among nine alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) germplasms, commonly referred to as African, Chilean, Flemish, Indian, Ladak, M. falcata, M. varia, Peruvian, and Turkistan, which represent a significant proportion of the genetic diversity present in US cultivars. Heterotic responses were determined by evaluating forage yield of the germplasms and their 36 half-diallel hybrids in seeded plots that were harvested five times in each of 2 years. Commercially acceptable yields were obtained from some hybrids of unimproved parents, where at least one parent was adapted to the study environment. Variation among crosses was attributed primarily to general combining ability (GCA) effects; however, specific combining ability effects were also significant. GCA estimates for African, Chilean and Peruvian were positive, while those for Ladak, M. falcata, and M. varia were negative. Estimates for variety heterosis effects were positive for Peruvian and M. falcata and negative for Indian and M. varia. Significant mid-parent heterosis [(MPH) range of –21% to 55%] and high-parent heterosis [(HPH) range of –33% to 23%] was detected. M. falcata hybrids exhibited the highest MPH values. However, this likely reflects the poor yield of M. falcata per se in the study environment and consequently, low MPH values. Peruvian hybrids demonstrated the highest cross mean performance, significant positive MPH in all crosses, and positive HPH in five out of eight crosses. The results indicate that Peruvian should be recognized as a heterotic group. Alfalfa breeders may wish to explore opportunities for heterotic yield gains that are likely to exist in hybrids between the Peruvian germplasm and elite breeding populations, in particular, those adapted to the southwestern United States. MPH results suggest that alfalfa breeders may have capitalized on the heterotic response between Flemish and M. varia during past development of alfalfa synthetics adapted to the central and northern latitudes of the United States.  相似文献

Summary A 5 X 5 diallel cross among well-adapted varieties of gram from different agroclimatic regions was studied for heterosis, combining ability and inheritance of days-to-flowering, primary branches, pods per plant, 100-seed weight and grain yield. A high degree of heterosis over mid-parent and better parent was observed for primary branches, no. of pods and grain yield, whereas very little heterosis was exhibited for days-to-flower and 100-seed weight. Crosses among lines of diverse origin generally gave higher heterosis and over-dominance than lines from the same region. Primary branch number, pod number, and grain yield exhibited positive over-dominance; days-to-flower showed negative over-dominance while 100-seed weight had no dominance. Both general and specific combining ability effects were significant for all the characters studied but g.c.a. effects appeared to be more important for days-to-flower, 100-seed weight and grain yield. Graphical analysis indicated additive effects for all the characters, with complete dominance for days-to-flower, no dominance for 100-seed weight and over-dominance for the other three characters. Dominant genes conditioned earliness, primary branch number and 100-seed weight. The role of various parents and crosses in planning a hybridization programme has been discussed.  相似文献

Studies on the relative effects of parents on some economic characters in sugarcane have given indications of maternal influence in the progeny performance in certain crosses with regard to millable canes at harvest, height of stalks and brix per cent in juice, irrespective of the fact that pollen parent effect was positive or negative. As judged from a study of the progeny of the direct crosses and reciprocals among the varieties studied, particularly use of Co. 678 as a pistil parent in the breeding programme for improving the mean height of the progeny and Co. 527 as a pistil parent for increasing number of millable canes at harvest and brix per cent in juice is clearly indicated. These indications should also prove useful for application in adopting the polycross method of breeding as well. Summary As a criterion for the selection from a population of individuals with a high potential as parents of synthetic varieties, the general varietal ability of an individual is defined as the mean expression of all possible synthetics of a given size(s) having this plant as a common parent. Using known expressions for the prediction of the performance of advanced generations of diploid synthetic varieties, general varietal ability is expressed in terms of the F 1 and I 1 progenies of the plants under test, and is found to be a simple function of the polycross (g.c.a.) and inbred progeny means, where the contribution of the inbred progeny varies according to n and s. The implications and use of such a progeny test in the breeding of out-pollinating crops is discussed.  相似文献

A potato breeding strategy is presented which avoids the common but ineffective practice of intense early-generation visual selection between seedlings in a glasshouse and spaced plants at a seed site. Once pair crosses have been made, progeny tests are used to discard whole progenies before starting conventional within-progeny selection at the unreplicated small-plot stage. Clones are also visually selected from the best progenies for use as parents in the next cycle of crosses whilst they are multiplied to provide enough tubers for assessment of their yield and quality. Mid-parent values, as well as progeny tests, are then used to select between the resultant crosses. Material from other breeding programmes can be included in the parental assessments and used in the next cycle of crosses if superior. Finally, in seeking new cultivars, the number of clones on which to practise selection is increased by sowing more true seed of the best progenies, but without selection until the small-plot stage. Traits considered are resistance to late blight [ Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary] and to the white potato cyst nematode [ Globodera pallida (Stone)], fry colour and tuber yield and appearance, as visually assessed by breeders. The theoretical superiority of the strategy for seeking new cultivars lies in being able to practise between-cross selection for a number of economically important traits within 1 or 2 years of making crosses, something that is not possible on individuals as seedlings in the glasshouse or spaced plants at the seed site. This also means that full-sib family selection can be operated on a 3-year cycle, an improvement on current practice of clonal selection on what is often at least a nine-year cycle. New cultivars can be sought with more confidence from the best progenies in each cycle, and modern methods of rapid multiplication used to reduce the number of clonal generations required to find the best clones.  相似文献

Prediction of the means and genetic variances in segregating generations could help to assess the breeding potential of base populations. In this study, we investigated whether the testcross (TC) means and variances of F3 progenies from F1 crosses in European maize can be predicted from the TC means of their parents and F1 crosses and four measures of parental genetic divergence: genetic distance (GD) determined by 194 RFLP or 691 AFLPTM 1 markers, mid-parent heterosis (MPH), and absolute difference between the TC means of parents (∣P1−P2∣). The experimental materials comprised six sets of crosses; each set consisted of four elite inbreds from the flint or dent germplasm and the six possible F1 crosses between them, which were evaluated for mid-parent heterosis. Testcross progenies of these materials and 20 random F3 plants per F1 cross were produced with a single-cross tester from the opposite heterotic group and evaluated in two environments. The characters studied were plant height, dry matter content and grain yield. The genetic distance between parent lines ranged between 0.17 and 0.70 for RFLPs and between 0.14 and 0.57 for AFLPs in the six sets. Testcross-means of parents, F1 crosses, and F3 populations averaged across the six crosses in a particular set generally agreed well for all three traits. Bartlett’s test revealed heterogeneous TC variances among the six crosses in all sets for plant height, in four sets for grain yield and in five sets for dry matter content. Correlations among the TC means of the parents, F1 crosses, and F3 populations were highly significant and positive for all traits. Estimates of the TC variance among F3 progenies for the 36 crosses showed only low correlations with the four measures of parental genetic divergence for all traits. The results demonstrated that for our material, the TC means of the parents or the parental F1 cross can be used as predictors for the TC means of F3 populations. However, the prediction of the TC variance remains an unsolved problem. Received: 4 August 1997 / Accepted: 17 November 1997  相似文献

Summary A random sample of seedlings representing high, medium and poor vigour was studied for tuber colour, tuber shape, eye depth, tuber cracking, tuber yield per plant, average tuber weight and number of tubers per plant in four successive generations (F1, F1, F1C2, and F1C3). Based on the performance of vigour groups in various generations and inter-generation correlation coefficients, we propose a procedure for the elimination of unproductive genotypes early in the breeding programme. The data indicates that seedlings of poor vigour can be discarded at the seedling stage prior to transplantation in the field. The rejection of clones on the basis of tuber colour, tuber shape, eye depth and tuber cracking can also be initiated at the seedling stage. For tuber yield and average tuber weight a negative selection (rejection of poor phenotypes) is suggested from the first clonal generation and for number of tubers, from second clonal generation, until statistically sound replicated trials can be conducted for carrying out positive selection.  相似文献

Heterosis is defined as the increased vigour of hybrids in comparison to their parents. We investigated 24 F(1) hybrid lines of Arabidopsis thaliana generated by reciprocally crossing either C24 or Col with six other parental accessions (Can, Co, Cvi, Ler, Rsch, Te) that differ widely in their freezing tolerance. The crosses differed in the degree of heterosis for freezing tolerance, both in the non-acclimated state and after a 14 d cold acclimation period. Crosses with C24 showed more heterosis than crosses with Col, and heterosis was stronger in acclimated than in non-acclimated plants. Leaf content of soluble sugars and proline showed more deviation from mid-parent values in crosses involving C24 than in those involving Col, and deviations were larger in acclimated than in non-acclimated plants. There were significant correlations between the content of different sugars and leaf freezing tolerance, as well as between heterosis effects in freezing tolerance and sugar content. Flavonoid content and composition varied between accessions, and between non-acclimated and acclimated plants. In the crosses, large deviations from the mid-parent values in the contents of different flavonols occurred, and there were strikingly strong correlations between both flavonol content and freezing tolerance, and between heterosis effects in freezing tolerance and flavonol content.  相似文献

Chinese semi-winter rapeseed is genetically diverse from Canadian and European spring rapeseed. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of semi-winter rapeseed for spring rapeseed hybrid breeding, to assess the genetic effects involved, and to estimate the correlation of parental genetic distance (GD) with hybrid performance, heterosis, general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) in crosses between spring and semi-winter rapeseed lines. Four spring male sterile lines from Germany and Canada as testers were crossed with 13 Chinese semi-winter rapeseed lines to develop 52 hybrids, which were evaluated together with their parents and commercial hybrids for seed yield and oil content in three sets of field trials with 8 environments in Canada and Europe. The Chinese parental lines were not adapted to local environmental conditions as demonstrated by poor seed yields per se. However, the hybrids between the Chinese parents and the adapted spring rapeseed lines exhibited high heterosis for seed yield. The average mid-parent heterosis was 15% and ca. 50% of the hybrids were superior to the respective hybrid control across three sets of field trials. Additive gene effects mainly contributed to hybrid performance since the mean squares of GCA were higher as compared to SCA. The correlation between parental GD and hybrid performance and heterosis was found to be low whereas the correlation between GCA(f + m) and hybrid performance was high and significant in each set of field trials, with an average of r = 0.87 for seed yield and r = 0.89 for oil content, indicating that hybrid performance can be predicted by GCA(f + m). These results demonstrate that Chinese semi-winter rapeseed germplasm has a great potential to increase seed yield in spring rapeseed hybrid breeding programs in Canada and Europe.  相似文献

The transfer of genes between Triticum aestivum (hexaploid bread wheat) and T. turgidum (tetraploid durum wheat) holds considerable potential for genetic improvement of both these closely related species. Five different T. aestivum/T. turgidum ssp. durum crosses were investigated using Diversity Arrays Technology (DArT) markers to determine the inheritance of parental A, B and D genome material in subsequent generations derived from these crosses. The proportions of A, B and D chromosomal segments inherited from the hexaploid parent were found to vary significantly among individual crosses. F(2) populations retained widely varying quantities of D genome material, ranging from 99% to none. The relative inheritance of bread wheat and durum alleles in the A and B genomes of derived lines also varied among the crosses. Within any one cross, progeny without D chromosomes in general had significantly more A and B genome durum alleles than lines retaining D chromosomes. The ability to select for and manipulate this non-random segregation in bread wheat/durum crosses will assist in efficient backcrossing of selected characters into the recurrent durum or hexaploid genotype of choice. This study illustrates the utility of DArT markers in the study of inter-specific crosses to commercial crop species.  相似文献

The F(1) and F(2) progenies of a ten-parent diallel cross (excluding reciprocals) of hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell) were analyzed for combining ability for quantitative and quality traits. The results indicated significant differences among the parents for general combining ability (gca) and crosses for specific combining ability (sca) for all the characters studied. The gca and sca components of variance were significant for all the traits. However, the gca component of variance was predominant indicating the predominance of additive gene effects for the traits studied. Among the parents Durgapura 65, HD 2285, Lok-1, Raj 1972 and HD 2329 were the best general combiners for grain yield and average to high combiners for tillers per plant, grain yield per spike, grains per spike and 1000-grain weight. The best specific crosses for grain yield were Sonalika x WH 157, HD 2428 x Durgapura 65, Durgapura 65 x Sonalika, HD 2428 x Lok-1 and CPAN 3004 x Raj 1972. The parent Raj 1972, Lok-1 and HD 2285 were the best general combiners for grain yield and protein content, however, Raj 3077 was the best general combiner for protein content. The most suitable specific crosses for protein content were HD 2329 x HD 2285, HD 2428 x Raj 1972 and CPAN 3004 x WH 157. Most of the specific crosses for grain yield as well as protein content involved high x average, average x average and average x poor general combiners. To ensure further increase in grain yield along with high protein, combinations of desirable yield components is advocated. Inclusion of F(1) hybrids showing high sca and having parents with good gca, into multiple crosses and/or bi-parental mating, or diallel selective mating could prove a worthwhile approach for further improvement of grain yield in bread wheat.  相似文献
