Adult hoverflies feed on pollen, nectar and honeydews. Thus, the implementation of floristically diverse resources in agroecosystems can enhance biological control of pests by increasing populations of these natural enemies. The objective of this work was to study the effect of seven species of Asteraceae (Andryala integrifolia L., Anthemis arvensis L., Calendula arvensis L., Carduus tenuiflorus Curtis, Chamaemelum nobile (L.) All., Coleostephus myconis (L.) Rchb.f. and Crepis vesicaria L.) on adult longevity and nutrient levels of Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer) (Diptera: Syrphidae). Crepis vesicaria and C. nobile gave the highest mean longevities while, for the other plant species, longevities were not significantly different from those in the water only treatment. In addition, all species tested resulted in significantly lower longevities than the positive control (glucose). In terms of nutrient levels, C. nobile generated high levels of total sugars and C. vesicaria high levels of lipids which suggests the consumption of flower resources. However, the majority of the plants tested would not allow hoverflies to complete their life cycle. Thus, further experimentation needs to be done before considering these plants for implementation in agroecosystems.  相似文献

Glandular trichomes of Labiatae are among the most investigated secretory structures. Most species studied belong to subfamily Nepetoidae, including plants with aromatic properties, while so far a few species of subfamily Lamioideae were examined. In this work, we studied the micromorphology, ultrastructure, type and release of secretion of the glandular trichomes present on leaves and flowers of several species belonging to subfamily Lamioideae, (Stachys alopecuros (L.) Bentham subsp. alopecuros, S. officinalis (L.) Trevisan subsp. officinalis, S. germanica L. subsp. germanica, S. germanica L. subsp. salviifolia (Ten.) Gams, S. sylvatica L., S. heraclea All., S. plumosa Griseb., S. annua L., Prasium majus L., Sideritis romana L.) and one to the sister group Scutellarioideae (Scutellaria galericulata L.). Besides the well-known peltate and small capitate trichomes, widely described in the literature, other types of glandular trichomes were encountered; stalked peltate hairs and large capitate hairs. In particular, a new type of capitate trichome, exclusive of calices and corollas, which presents a mode and release of secretion never described before, is reported.  相似文献

The component composition and content of mycotoxins in perennial grasses of five species of the genus Trifolium, selected from natural biocenoses in different periods of vegetation, were studied. In the terrestrial parts of plants, the permanent presence of alternariol, cyclopiazonic acid, and emodin was shown. It was noted that differences in contamination are most clearly expressed in meadow clover Trifolium pratense L. and white clover Trifolium repens L., while alsike clover Trifolium hybridum L. occupies an intermediate position. It was found that zigzag clover Trifolium medium L. and mountain clover Trifolium montanum L., morphologically close to meadow clover, practically did not differ in the composition of toxic metabolites. The ways of formation of metabolic equilibrium in plants with participation of microscopic fungi are discussed.  相似文献

A Gleasonian model of succession (van der Valk, 1981) was used to predict the species composition of a freshwater marsh following fire. Seed bank samples from 5 vegetation types (Distichlis spicata (L.) Greene, Scirpus lacustris L., S. maritimus L., Typha spp., open water) were used in conjuction with plant life history characteristics to make predictions of post-fire species composition for each vegetation type and the entire study area. In general, predictions for specific vegetation types were not good, but were more accurate for the entire area. Stronge correlations for specific vegetation types may have been prevented by considering marsh vegetation types as discrete units, statistical sampling problems, competitive interactions, or more specific germination requirements of some species.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi have mutualistic symbiosis with higher plants, increasing plant resistance to environmental stresses and nutrient uptake and improving soil. During arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis, a range of chemical and biological factors are affected. In this study, two species of arbuscular mycorrhiza (Glomus mosseae and G. intraradices) were used to assess the effects of inoculation on licorice growth and secondary metabolite production. After successful inoculation, the increase in the growth rate, P and Zn uptake, and the accumulation of secondary metabolites in licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) roots were observed in two periods of 3 and 6 months compared to control. After 6 months, more increments in growth, secondary metabolites, and P and Zn uptake were observed compared with the first 3-months period. Two groups of secondary metabolites arising from phenolic and terpenoid metabolism obviously responded to mycorrhizal fungi colonization in licorice roots.  相似文献

Food mixing by herbivores is thought to balance nutrient intake and possibly dilute secondary metabolites characteristic of different host plant species. Most empirical work on insect herbivores has focused on nutrient balancing in laboratory settings. In this study, we characterize food mixing behaviour of the caterpillar Grammia geneura (Strecker) (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) in nature and use the observed patterns to design ecologically relevant experiments that reveal the relative importance of these processes in food-switching behaviour. Our design involved both choice and no-choice experiments with chemically defined diets in which primary nutrients and secondary metabolites were manipulated in tandem. We analysed two stages in the process of food-switching behaviour: leaving food and accepting new food. In nature, an individual's rate of leaving host plants was positively associated with its probability of rejecting plant species most recently eaten, but not related to its probability of accepting different host plant species. Furthermore, an individual's leaving rate was negatively related to its average feeding bout duration. This relationship resulted partly from variation in the response of individuals to nutrient imbalance and partly from shortened feeding bouts prior to switching, suggesting that a decline in feeding excitation preceded searching for food that differed from that most recently eaten. Laboratory experiments with synthetic diets indicated the importance of secondary metabolites in the decline in feeding excitation prior to switching. Preference for new food depended strongly on secondary metabolites in a manner consistent with toxin dilution. This is the first experimental evidence for the process of toxin dilution in caterpillars, and for the combined influence of nutrients and secondary metabolites on their foraging patterns in nature. Natural products play an invaluable role as a starting point in the drug discovery process, and plants and animals use many interesting biologically active natural products as a chemical defense mechanism against predators. Among marine organisms, many nudibranch gastropods are known to derive defensive metabolites from the sponges they eat. Here we investigated the putative sequestration of the toxic compound latrunculin A—a 16-membered macrolide that prevents actin polymerization within cellular processes—which has been identified from sponge sources, by five closely related nudibranch molluscs of the genus Chromodoris. Only latrunculin A was present in the rim of the mantle of these species, where storage reservoirs containing secondary metabolites are located, whilst a variety of secondary metabolites were found in their viscera. The species studied thus selectively accumulate latrunculin A in the part of the mantle that is more exposed to potential predators. This study also demonstrates that latrunculin-containing sponges are not their sole food source. Latrunculin A was found to be several times more potent than other compounds present in these species of nudibranchs when tested by in vitro and in vivo toxicity assays. Anti-feedant assays also indicated that latrunculin A was unpalatable to rock pool shrimps, in a dose-dependent manner. These findings led us to propose that this group of nudibranchs has evolved means both to protect themselves from the toxicity of latrunculin A, and to accumulate this compound in the mantle rim for defensive purposes. The precise mechanism by which the nudibranchs sequester such a potent compound from sponges without disrupting their own key physiological processes is unclear, but this work paves the way for future studies in this direction. Finally, the possible occurrence of both visual and chemosensory Müllerian mimicry in the studied species is discussed.  相似文献

Rare earth elements (REEs) have become increasingly important metals used in modern technology. Processes including mining, oil refining, discarding of obsolete equipment containing REEs, and the use of REE-containing phosphate fertilizers may increase the likelihood of environmental contamination. However, there is a scarcity of information on the toxicity and accumulation of these metals to terrestrial primary producers in contaminated soils. The objective of this work was to assess the phytotoxicity and uptake from contaminated soil of six REEs (chloride forms of praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, terbium, dysprosium, and erbium) on three native plants (Asclepias syriaca L., Desmodium canadense (L.) DC., Panicum virgatum L.) and two crop species (Raphanus sativus L., Solanum lycopersicum L.) in separate dose-response experiments under growth chamber conditions. Limited effects of REEs were found on seed germination and speed of germination. Effects on aboveground and belowground biomass were more pronounced, especially for the three native species, which were always more sensitive than the crop species tested. Inhibition concentrations (IC25 and IC50) causing 25 or 50% reductions in plant biomass respectively, were measured. For the native species, the majority of aboveground biomass IC25s (11 out of 18) fell within 100 to 300 mg REE/kg dry soil. In comparison to the native species, IC25s for the crops were always greater than 400 mg REE/kg, with the majority of results (seven out of 12) falling above 700 mg REE/kg. IC50s were often not detected for the crops. Root biomass of native species was also affected at lower doses than in crops. REE uptake by plants was higher in the belowground parts than in the above-ground plant tissues. Results also revealed that chloride may have contributed to the sensitivity of the native species, Desmodium canadense, one of the most sensitive species studied. Nevertheless, these results demonstrated that phytotoxicity may be a concern in contaminated areas.  相似文献

Hybridization between species plays an important role in the evolution of secondary metabolites and in the formation of combinations of existing secondary metabolites in plants. We have investigated the content of phenolic compounds in berries and flowers of Vaccinium × intermedium Ruthe, which is a rare natural hybrid between bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.). The berries and flowers of the hybrid showed characteristics inherited from both parent species in the distribution and contents of phenolic compounds. Bilberry is known as one of the richest sources of anthocyanins and to have a profile of 15 major forms combining cyanidin, delphinidin, petunidin, peonidin and malvidin with galactose, glucose and arabinose. Lingonberry contains only cyanidin glycosides. Hybrid berries contained all bilberry anthocyanins with pronounced cyanidin content. With regard to proanthocyanidins and flavonol glycosides, the hybrid inherited diverse profiles combining those of both parental species. The distribution of hydroxycinnamic acids was quite uniform in all studied berries. Of the identified compounds, 30 were detected in lingonberry, 46 in bilberry, 53 in hybrid berries and 38 in hybrid flowers. Hence, compared with the parent species, hybrid berries possess a more diverse profile of phenolic compounds and, therefore, can offer interesting material for breeding purposes.  相似文献

Ethnobotanical and phytochemical studies are useful to discover new drugs. Phytochemical screening is an important step in the detection of the bioactive components existing in medicinal plants that are used in traditional medicine. Very few phytochemical studies investigating medicinal plants used in traditional medicine exist in Saudi Arabia. Eighty-five medicinal plants used in traditional medicine in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia are investigated here for the first time. This research aims to screen of 85 medicinal plants used in traditional medicine in Jeddah for the presence of secondary metabolites, and to answer the following question: Is the ethnomedicinal importance of medicinal plants used in Jeddah conform to their secondary metabolite content. Ethnobotanical fieldwork took place in Jeddah from August 2018 to September 2019. Eighty-five different plant species belonging to 37 families were identified. Screening of 85 medicinal plants was performed for the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, saponins and resins using standard methods. The most commonly distributed phytochemical compounds among medicinal plants used were glycosides (82%; 70 species), tannins (68%; 58 species), alkaloids (56%; 48 species), saponins (52%, 44 species) and flavonoids (35%; 30 species). On the other hand, the least commonly distributed compounds were resins (31%; 26 species). All the six groups of secondary metabolites were found in seeds of Cuminum cyminum L., Pimpinella anisum L. and Trigonella foenum-graecum L. It can be said that the ethnomedicinal importance of these 85 medicinal plants used in Jeddah conform to their secondary metabolite content. More research should be carried out on the quantitative analysis of phytochemicals in these 85 medicinal plants used in traditional medicine in Jeddah. Furthermore, there is a need to focus phytochemical screening on ethnobotanical studies to complete research into traditional medicine which leads to the discovery of new drugs.  相似文献

采用番茄为砧木嫁接茄子,经过GC-MS检测,研究了黄萎菌胁迫前后嫁接对茄子植株根系次生代谢的影响。通过比较黄萎菌胁迫前后茄子根系次生代谢物质的变化,探讨了嫁接在胁迫前后对植株根系次生代谢的调节作用,并对嫁接茄根系分泌物中丁二酸二甲酯对茄子黄萎菌及茄子种子萌发、幼苗生长的化感效应进行了研究。结果表明,黄萎菌胁迫前,嫁接影响了根系的次生代谢物质的分泌,表现为物质种类和数量的增加,各类物质相对含量改变。嫁接茄子根系分泌物中检测出9大类、66种物质,比自根茄处理多出4大类、33种物质。黄萎菌胁迫时,嫁接茄子田间表现出明显的抗病性;进一步对根系分泌物进行检测发现,嫁接茄根系分泌物中物质种类和相对含量与自根茄处理相比均有显著差别;嫁接茄根系分泌物中烃和酚醇类物质相对含量分别增加了3.25%和0.07%,苯类、茚类和脂肪酸酯类物质相对含量降低,降幅分别为2.62%、0.26%和0.07%。新出现了胺类物质,芴类物质。黄萎菌胁迫前后茄子根系次生代谢物质成分同样发生了变化。与接菌前嫁接茄子植株根系分泌物相比,接菌后嫁接处理的苯类、茚类、酚醇类和胺类物质相对含量增加,增幅分别为22.07%、1.72%、1.21%和0.34%;烃类和脂肪酸酯类物质相对含量降低了1.28%和21.75%;酮类、咔唑类和芴类物质消失。新增物质中以丁二酸二甲酯的相对含量最高,达14.38%。随后的生物检测结果显示,丁二酸二甲酯能够提高茄子田间抗病性,对黄萎菌菌丝生长起化感抑制作用,并促进了茄子种子的萌发和幼苗的生长,随着处理浓度升高作用效果增强,并在1 mmol/L处理时达到最佳作用效果。  相似文献

Lavandula stoechas L. (Lamiaceae) is an attractive shrub native to the Mediterranean regions used for ornamental, melliferous, aromatic and medicinal purposes. Furthermore, this species presents an increasing interest in cosmetics, perfumery and pharmaceutical industries. The variability of qualitative and quantitative metabolic traits among nine wild germplasms representing the distribution area of this species in Tunisia was undertaken. A total of 45 essential oil components were identified in the aerial parts of the studied germplasms. The main essential oil components were camphor (15.32–50.63%), fenchone (6.57–34.70%), 1,8-cineole (0.05–13.45%) and γ-gurjunene (1.10–12.15%). In addition to the well known chemotypes camphor/fenchone and camphor/1.8-cineole, a new chemotype camphor/γ-gurjunene was detected in Tunisian L. stoechas L. Six phenolic acids (quinic acid, gallic acid, p-coumaric acid, 4,5-di-O-caffeoyquinic acid, salviolinic acid and trans cinnamic acid) and five flavonoids (luteolin-7-o-glucoside, naringin, apegenin-7-o-glucoside, quercetin and kampherol) were identified in the ethanolic extracts. Salviolinic acid (46.30–615.18 μg/g) and luteolin-7-o-glucoside (5.98–38.54 μg/g) were the most abundant phenolic compounds. A high significant phytochemical variability (p ˂ 0.01) in the accumulation of volatile and phenolic secondary metabolites among the studied germplasms was recorded. The conducted multivariate (PCA) and clustering (HCA) analyses revealed different classification pattern for essential oil and phenolic compounds. The detected phytochemical polymorphism among the investigated lavender ecotypes didn't show accordance with bioclimatic and geographical areas which suggests genetic background as the main explaining factor. The detected secondary metabolites polymorphism valorises Tunisian L. stoechas L. genetic resources as valuable plant material in further breeding programs. Moreover, an urgent in situ and ex situ conservation measures are required for these wild germplasms threatened by human over-harvesting practices and the occurring dramatic changes in climatic conditions.  相似文献

Climate warming is predicted to amplify drought stress. Thus, it is important to understand how coexisting plant species respond to severe droughts. Here we study how seven Mediterranean woody plant species with different evolutionary history and functional characteristics (Pinus halepensis Mill., Juniperus phoenicea L., Pistacia lentiscus L., Rhamnus lycioides L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Genista scorpius (L.) DC., and Globularia alypum L.) responded to a severe winter drought during 2011–2012 in Spain. The study site is located in the Valcuerna valley, Monegros desert, northeastern Spain. We evaluated how the drought affected the annual growth-ring formation of the species by using dendrochronology and quantified the intensity of drought-induced defoliation and mortality and compared it between species and groups of species with different evolutionary history. Radial growth of all species was strongly reduced by the 2012 drought. The pre-Mediterranean species (P. halepensis, J. phoenicea, P. lentiscus and R. lycioides) reduced growth more than the Mediterranean species (R. officinalis, G. scorpius and G. alypum). Defoliation was significantly higher in pre-Mediterranean than in Mediterranean species. When species were analyzed separately we found that P. halepensis was the species with the highest growth reduction but J. phoenicea was defoliated more severely and showed higher mortality rates as a consequence of drought. In the case of the Mediterranean shrubs, drought-induced mortality was only noticeable in R. officinalis. Drought impacted growth of all species but this did not induce mortality in all of them. Growth reduction was dependent on evolutionary history. However, functional characteristics of the species such as leaf stomatal regulation and root architecture may be more important than evolutionary history on explaining drought-induced mortality. Indeed, species with shallow root systems such as J. phoenicea and R. officinalis were the most adversely affected by the drought.  相似文献

Extranuclear basic proteins have been detected in the capsule of the spermatozoa of three species of decapod crustaceans (Nephrops norvegicus L., Macrura; Eupagurus bernhardus L., Anomura; Carcinus maenas Penn., Brachyura). Their properties have been studied by cytochemical methods. Their position inside the capsule of the spermatozoon has been specified with the aid of the electron microscope. Present in a constant fashion in the three species cited, their relative importance is very variable. In contrast to the refringent cone of the spermatozoon of Ascaris, which contains an acid protein, ascaradine, the capsule of the spermatozoon of the three decapod crustaceans studied contains basic proteins which we propose to designate by the general term "decapodine".  相似文献

植物光合与水分生理特征是植物逆境适应能力评价的重要参考指标.极端生境下,坡位的选择有时成为造林成败的关键.探讨了元谋金沙江干热河谷9个主要造林树种光合与蒸腾作用在不同坡位间的空间差异及干热季向湿润季转换的时序差异.结果表明,低的坡位有助于树种维持相对高的净光合速率,且树种不同,由坡位引起的光合增益效应亦具有较大差别;低坡位的光合增益效应在干热季更为明显,而在湿润季,干热胁迫解除,低坡位的光合增益效应具有较大程度的降低;在不同坡位间发生的光合限制主要受非气孔因素主导.无论在干热季或湿润季,与净光合速率的变化情形一致,低的坡位均促进了树种的蒸腾速率.水分利用效率受坡位的影响较为复杂,因树种、季节而异.  相似文献

The integration of biological and chemical data has provided patterns to identify three new Dysidea species from the Gulf of California (Pacific Ocean, Mexico). These three species are differentiated by distinctive morphological characters, such as the prominent subdermal fibers running along the surface in Dysidea reformensis n. sp., the granular appearance of the surface in conjunction with the consistent habit in Dysidea cachui n. sp., and the skeletal details such as tertiary network between the secondary fibers in Dysidea uriae n. sp. Differences are also observed in the natural products content of these species. Sesquiterpene-hydroquinone derivatives are the main secondary metabolites of D. reformensis and D. cachui, with each species displaying a different chemical profile, while the furanosesquiterpene dendrolasin has been isolated from D. uriae. The distinctive morphological characters and the natural products contained by each species are also compared with those of related Dysidea species.  相似文献

Wild medicinal and aromatic plants are in the market as herbal raw or processed and packaged materials, playing, even today, a strategic role in the production of plant-based products. Indeed, their content in active ingredients, mainly specialized secondary metabolites, is not constant; it undergoes significant seasonal variations, as abiotic stress heavily affects secondary metabolism network. The present review deals with the seasonality influence on the polyphenolic composition on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of medicinal and aromatic plants. To this aim, firstly the factors influencing the content of active ingredients in a plant drug will be discussed, and, in particular, the increased occurrence of phenols as a response to abiotic stress. In the last part of the review a brief reference will be made to four meaningful case studies, which involve wild medicinal aromatic herbs, native to the Mediterranean area: Calamintha nepeta L. Savi, Foeniculum vulgare Mill., Ruta graveolens L. and Thymus longicaulis C. Presl. These species, grown in the same geographical area and collected at the same harvesting time, showed a great variability in phenol constituents throughout the year. The comparison among data acquired clearly evidences that the seasonal variation in polyphenols’ occurrence and amount leads to a more/less pronounced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of the hydroalcoholic extract therefrom. It is worth of note that the presence of the same metabolite, but in different phytochemical complexes, could result in different biological activities.  相似文献

Trichoderma species are widely used in agriculture as biofungicides. These fungi are rich source of secondary metabolites and the mycoparasitic species are enriched in genes for biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Most often, genes for secondary metabolism are clustered in fungal genomes. Previously, no systematic study was undertaken to identify the secondary-metabolism related gene clusters in Trichoderma genomes. In the present study, a survey of the three Trichoderma genomes viz. T. reesei, T. atroviride and T. virens, was made to identify the putative gene clusters associated with secondary metabolism. In T. reesei genome, we identified one new NRPS and 6 new PKS clusters, which is much less than that found in T. atroviride (4 and 8) and T. virens (8 and 7). This work would pave the way for discovery of novel secondary metabolites and pathways in Trichoderma.  相似文献

Four submerged macrophytes were analysed with their respective assemblages of chironomid and algal taxa. Studies were made bimonthly, from January to November, in a shallow macrophyte-dominated lake. The periphytic algal community was represented by chlorophytes, diatoms and cyanobacteria; diatoms showed the highest relative abundance on the macrophyte species during the study. Algal biomass was affected by the season, and in January the highest values were found on Stratiotes aloides L., Potamogeton lucens L., Myriophyllum spicatum L.; in July on Chara aculeolata Kütz. The lowest algal biomass, on most of the macrophytes studied, was found in September. Larvae of Dicrotendipes sp., Diplocladius cultriger Kieffer, Endochironomus albipennis gr., Endochironomus impar (Walker), Glyptotendipes sp. and Paratanytarsus austriacus Kieffer were dominant within the chironomid community. The spatial distribution of chironomids between macrophytes species was related to periphytic algae biomass and certain environmental variables (temperature, water transparency, biomass of chlorophytes and diatoms). Analysis of chironomid diet and the results of canonical correspondence analysis confirmed this relationship. The strongest chironomid-algae relationships were observed on S. aloides and P. lucens.  相似文献
