Five species of deep-sea pourtalesiid echinoids were collected by the RV G.O. Sars MAR-ECO expedition to the northern part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: Solenocystis imitans new genus, new species, Echinosigra phiale (Thomson, 1872), Echinosigra (Echinogutta) fabrefacta Mironov, 1974, and two unidentified species of Pourtalesia. Three types of plastron plating are distinguished within the family Pourtalesiidae; in Solenocystis new genus the plating is similar to that in Spatagocystis, a genus known only from the deep-sea Antarctic. Each of three groups with distinctive plastron plating shows a continuous morphological gradation from a less elongated test without subanal rostrum to an extraordinarily elongated test with large rostrum and wide subanal fasciole; the ratio width/length of test varies from 0.86 to 0.12. Some morphological characters of the pourtalesiids are regarded as adaptations to burrowing and appear to be correlated with test elongation. The family is represented in the northern Atlantic only by 'advanced' genera (Echinosigra, Pourtalesia and Solenocystis) with very elongated tests.

Glass sponges (Hexactinellida) collected under the framework of the MAR-ECO project on the G.O. Sars cruise to the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge, between the Azores and the Reykjanes Ridge, and on the 49th cruise of Akademik Mstislav Keldysh to the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone are described. Fourteen species were identified in the material. This relatively rich fauna includes several novel findings, indicating that the hexactinellid fauna of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge is poorly investigated. One genus, Dictyaulus, has never before been reported from the Atlantic Ocean. Two species belonging to the genera Heterotella and Amphidiscella are new to science. Two other species, Rossella nodastrella Topsent, 1915 and Doconestes sessilis Topsent, 1928, have been collected just one other time. Finally, a probable new genus of Euplectellidae, which unfortunately cannot be adequately described because of how small the specimens are, is represented among these collections. A large portion of dead, rigid skeletons of Euretidae and spicule mats of Rossellidae are also reported but not described in detail. Representation of some genera in the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone, coupled with recent observations from elsewhere along the Mid-Atlantic mountain chain, suggests that this fauna is as similar to those of the Indian Ocean and Indo-West Pacific as it is to West or East Atlantic faunas.

An annotated list of deep-sea Anthozoa of the orders Actiniaria, Antipatharia, Scleractinia, Alcyonacea and Pennatulacea collected on the G.O. Sars MAR-ECO cruise to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the Azores and the southern tip of the Reykjanes Ridge is given. A total of 33 species is reported of which 32 were identified to species or genus level. The groups most rich in species were Actiniaria (nine species), Scleractinia (eight species) and Pennatulacea (eight species). Scleractinia, Antipatharia and Pennatulacea were mainly represented by species with a wide or cosmopolitan geographical distribution. In contrast, most of the actiniarians had been rarely recorded in the North Atlantic. Three species, Schizopathes affinis Brook, 1889 (Antipatharia), Dendrobrachia multispina Opresko & Bayer, 1991 and Heteropolypus cf. insolitus Tixier-Durivault, 1964 (Alcyonacea) are reported from the North Atlantic for the first time.

During November 2000, a collection of acanthocephalans from birds in Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam, included a new genus and species in a new family and order. Pyrirhynchus heterospinus n. gen., n. sp. (Pyrirhynchidae n. fam.: Heteramorphida: new order) is described from Actitis hypoleucos (Linnaeus, 1758) (common sandpiper). The new family combines characters from Polymorphidae and Heteracanthocephalidae, and it includes new features. Specimens of the new species are distinguished from those of Heteracanthocephalidae and/or Polymorphidae by their long cylindrical trunk with anterior swelling, pyriform proboscis with hooks much larger ventrally, brain at the anterior end of the receptacle, specialized tubular cement glands, and elliptoid eggs with concentric shells. A detailed analysis of proboscis and trunk armature is included, and specimens of several species of Arhythmorhynchus Lühe, 1911 (Polymorphidae) were studied for comparative purposes. The proboscis of P. heterospinus is armed with 17 to 20 rows of 17 to 19 hooks each, with anterior 9-11 hooks rooted and posterior 6-10 spines rootless.

Based on material from the fourth cruise of the RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh and the MAR-ECO cruise of the RV G.O. Sars, 31 species of Ophiuroidea were identified from the section of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the Reykjanes Ridge and the Azores. The taxonomy of the group of genera with reduced arm comb and tentacle pores restricted only to the proximal arm segments is reviewed. It is suggested that the genera Homalophiura H.L. Clark, 1915, Ophiurolepis Matsumoto, 1915, Theodoria Fell, 1961 and Homophiura Paterson, 1985 should be regarded as synonyms of the genus Ophioplinthus Lyman, 1878. From examination of the type specimens, it is demonstrated that the six-armed species Ophiacantha anomala G.O. Sars, 1871 also includes five-armed specimens previously identified as the separate species Ophiacantha cuspidata Lyman, 1878. The latter taxon is considered here as the junior synonym of O. anomala. Previously mentioned 'deep-water populations of the common shallow water species Ophiacantha bidentata (Retzius, 1805)' represent a separate species, Ophiacantha fraterna Verrill, 1885, which is well distinguished by the shape of the spicules of the disk, narrow outer oral papilla and narrower tentacle scale as well as a hermaphroditic nature. Three new species, i.e. Ophioplinthus pseudotessellata sp. nov., Ophiocamax patersoni sp. nov. and Ophiophyllum nesisi sp. nov., are described.

We describe Hedgpethia spinosasp. n. based on a single male specimen obtained from 197-207 m depth, south of Yaku Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Among 15 previously known congeners, the new species resembles Hedgpethia bicornis (Losina-Losinsky & Turpaeva, 1958), Hedgpethia chitinosa (Hilton, 1943), and probably Hedgpethia brevitarsis (Losina-Losinsky & Turpaeva, 1958), in having a mid-dorsal tubercle on the posterior rim on each trunk segment. The new species, however, is distinguishable from those by a pair of horns on the anterior margin of the cephalic segment, spines on the first coxae, and denticulate spines on the strigilis. The new species represents the fifth member of the genus so far known from Japanese waters, in addition to Hedgpethia brevitarsis (Losina-Losinsky & Turpaeva, 1958), Hedgpethia chitinosa (Hilton, 1943), Hedgpethia dofleini (Loman, 1911), and Hedgpethia elongata Takahashi, Dick & Mawatari, 2007.

One new kinorhynch genus and species and one new species from the genus Zelinkaderes are described from sandy sediment off Fort Pierce, Florida. The new genus and species, Tubulideres seminoli gen. et sp. nov. is characterized by the presence of the first trunk segment consisting of a closed ring, the second segment of a bent tergal plate with a midventral articulation and the following nine segments consisting of a tergal and two sternal plates. Cuspidate spines are not present, but flexible tubules are located on several segments, and in particular concentrated on the ventral side of the second segment. Middorsal spines are present on all trunk segments and are alternatingly offset to a position slightly lateral to the middorsal line. Zelinkaderes brightae nov. sp. is characterized by its spine formula in having middorsal spines on trunk segments 4, 6 and 8–11, lateroventral acicular spines on segment 2, lateral accessory cuspidate spines on segments 2 and 8, ventrolateral cuspidate spines on segments 4–6 and 9, lateroventral acicular spines present on segments 8 and 9, and midterminal, lateral terminal and lateral terminal accessory spines on segment 11. The spine formula of Z. brightae nov. sp. places it in a position in between Z. submersus and a clade consisting of Z. klepali and Z. floridensis. The new findings on Z. brightae nov. sp. have led us to propose an emended diagnosis for the genus.

Individuals belonging to two new species, from two genera Clymenella Verril (Maldanidae) and Mooreonuphis Fauchald (Onuphidae), have been collected and described from a sublittoral bottom area close to Antofagasta, northern Chile. The environment consists of medium to fine sands and the samples have been collected at ca. 60 m depth. Clymenella fauchaldi sp. n. is closely related to Clymenella minorArwidsson, 1911, but clearly differs from other species of the genus in the type of notochaetae, winged capillaries, and neurochaetae, thick acicular spines, that are borne on the first chaetigers. Mooreonuphis colosensissp. n.is related to Mooreonuphis nebulosa (Moore, 1911) and Mooreonuphis peruana (Hartman, 1944), but differs mainly in the form of the mandibles, in the maxillary formula, location of the subacicular hooks on chaetigers, number of the ceratophore rings and the length of the medium and lateral antennae styles.

Most lichens of the family Teloschistaceae (Ascomycota) produce yellow-orange-red anthraquinone pigments. However, the genus Pyrenodesmia encompasses species in which anthraquinones are absent and replaced by a gray pigment Sedifolia-gray. It was shown recently that these species are related to taxa with both anthraquinones and Sedifolia-gray (Caloplaca xerica group, C. haematites group, and C. cretensis) and to species with a brown pigment instead of both anthraquinones and Sedifolia-gray (C. demissa, C. obscurella, and C. reptans). Nevertheless, relationships between mentioned anthraquinone-containing and anthraquinone-lacking species remained unclear. In total, 8 DNA loci from 41 species were used here to resolve these uncertainties. We concluded that C. demissa, C. obscurella, and C. reptans are rather distant from the core of Pyrenodesmia, and we place them outside of Pyrenodesmia sensu lato. Within Pyrenodesmia sensu lato, three lineages were revealed and recognized on a generic level: the genus Pyrenodesmia sensu stricto (21 species), the genus Kuettlingeria (14 species), which is resurrected here, and the genus Sanguineodiscus (4 species), which is newly described here. The genus Pyrenodesmia includes taxa that never contain anthraquinones, but Sedifolia-gray. It matches with the former C. variabilis group. Taxa of the genera Kuettlingeria and Sanguineodiscus have anthraquinones in their apothecia and Sedifolia-gray in their thalli. The genus Kuettlingeria includes the former C. xerica group plus C. cretensis and C. diphyodes. The genus Sanguineodiscus includes the former C. haematites group and C. bicolor. The identity of Kuettlingeria (Caloplaca) diphyodes was clarified and the name Pyrenodesmia helygeoides was resurrected. Twenty-four new combinations were proposed.

Specimens belonging to the pycnogonid family Ammotheidae collected during the Victoria Land Transect 2004 cruise (Ross Sea, Antarctica) were studied. Five species are recognized in this collection, three species of Ammothea, one of Achelia and one of Austroraptus. Some information about the variability of the propodal armature of Ammothea glacialis is discussed. The rare species Ammothea meridionalis is reported for the fifth time, enlarging its known bathymetric range. A new species in the genus Ammothea is described, Ammothea victoriae. The new taxon is compared with its closest congeners, especially with A. armentis, A. gordonae and A. carolinensis. Both morphotypes of Achelia spicata are reported, some additional morphological differences having been detected between them. Austroraptus calcaratus is reported for the third time, and with our specimens 14 individuals are now known. Present and previous data show a restricted geographical and bathymetric distribution.

When the genus Paravahlkampfia was distinguished from the genus Vahlkampfia on the basis of significant differences in small subunit ribosomal DNA sequences, Paravahlkampfia ustiana was the only described species of this new genus. More recently, a vahlkampfiid strain has been isolated (from soil from an upland farm in Scotland) which has trophozoite and cyst morphology more similar to P. ustiana than to other non-flagellating vahlkampfiid species. Also, it clusters with P. ustiana in phylogenetic trees derived from 5.8S ribosomal DNA sequences. However, it is significantly different from P. ustiana in both phenotype and internal transcribed spacer sequence. Consequently, a new species, Paravahlkampfia lenta, is proposed.

A new species belonging to a new genus of Monogenoidea was found on the gills of Euleptorhamphus viridis from the Indian Ocean. The opisthohaptor of the new genus consists of two medially overlapping rows of clamps situated on a double fold along the oblique posterior margin of the body. Clamp are of Microcotyle type, their springs having accessory pieces. Three pairs of larval hooks are present. The genital atrium is armed with three groups of spines. The first group comprises spines surrounding the female aperture; the second one surrounds the cirrus in an incomplete circle; the third group consists of two lateral groups of spines arising from two muscular pad-like structures. Vagina armed with a chitionous spine opens on the right-hand side which is longer than the left-hand one. Behind the U-shaped ovarium vitellaria merge in an undifferentiated mass and completely cover the branches of the intestine and the testes. The new genus is close to the genera Chlamydaxine Unnithan, 1957 and Axine Abildgaard, 1794 differing from the former by an armed genital atrium and from the latter by two medially overlapping rows of clamps.

Phomopsis amaranthicola, a newly described species discovered in Florida, is under development as a biological control agent for weeds belonging to the genus Amaranthus. Host-range testing was performed on the fungus, using the centrifugal phylogenetic scheme, with Amaranthus hybridus as the focal plant. Forty-five accessions of 21 species in the genus Amaranthus were tested for susceptibility to infection by this fungus. Fifty-six plant species outside the genus Amaranthus were also tested. The latter included crops in which the fungus might be used as a bioherbicide, members of genera that are closely related to Amaranthus, and selections of species that have been reported as hosts of other species of the genera Phomopsis or Diaporthe. Phomopsis amaranthicola did not infect any of the plants from outside the genus Amaranthus but was highly pathogenic to several species in the genus Amaranthus. All Amaranthus species tested were infected to varying degrees by P. amaranthicola; the resulting mortality levels were also variable. Thus, P. amaranthicola appears to be host-specific to the members of the genus Amaranthus. The generic level of specificity of this pathogen renders it not only a safe bioherbicide agent but also one that could be used against several weedy Amaranthus species.

Three new ciliate species presumably belonging to the family Paraisotrichidae were recognized in the fecal samples from zoo-kept Asian and African elephants. All the ciliates possess a unique but similar arrangement of somatic ciliature, thus a new genus Latteuria n.g. has been created for them. The genus is characterized by the presence of a tapered frontal ‘spout’ at the anterior end of the body, posterior ciliary rows in narrow grooves encircling the posterior half of the body and an anterior arch of cilia. Latteuria polyfaria n.sp. is the largest species in the genus with 9–11 posterior ciliary rows. In L. media n.sp., of medium body size, the number of rows varies from four to six, and the smallest species, L. trifaria n.sp., has only three-four posterior ciliary rows.
