We studied sexual dimorphism, female reproduction and egg incubation of the oriental leaf-toed gecko (Hemidactylus bowringii) from a population in southern China. The largest male and female in our sample were 60 and 57 mm snout-vent length (SVL), respectively. Males are the larger sex; sexual dimorphism in head size and tail length (TL) is evident in juveniles and adults, with males having larger heads as well as longer tails than females. Oviposition occurred between late May and late July. Females switched from laying two eggs early in the breeding season to 1-2 eggs later in the season. Clutch mass and egg mass were both independent of female SVL, whereas relative clutch mass was negatively correlated with female SVL. The previous conclusion that female H. bowringii lay a single clutch of eggs per breeding season is unlikely to be true. Thermal environments experienced by H. bowringii eggs affect incubation length as well as morphological and locomotor phenotypes of hatchlings. Hatchlings from eggs incubated at 30 degrees C were larger (SVL, tail length and body mass) and performed better in the racetrack than their counterparts from eggs incubated at 24 degrees C. Temperatures suitable for embryonic development are relatively high in H. bowringii, primarily as a consequence of the adaptive response to warm environments in southern China.

Morelet's crocodile Crocodylus moreletii has not been well-studied and many aspects of its life history are unknown. In particular there is a notable paucity of information on nesting and reproductive ecology. We studied the nesting ecology of Morelet's crocodile in northern Belize from 1992 through 1995. Nesting occurs at the onset of the wet season in mid-June and continues through mid-July (mean oviposition date =1 July±10 days). Eggs hatch from mid-August through mid- to late September. Nesting effort at our primary study site remained relatively constant during 1992, 1993 and 1995, but nearly doubled in 1994; this appeared to reflect a regional trend. Natural and man-made islands are heavily used as nesting sites. Nesting success in 1993 and 1994 was consistently higher on natural islands when compared with man-made islands or shoreline sites. Nest losses were primarily due to flooding and raccoon Procyon lotor predation. Losses from predation were greatest in 1994 when unseasonably low water levels facilitated predator access to nests. Females probably reach sexual maturity in 7–8 years after attaining a total length of 150 cm. Mean clutch size (25.0±7.6; range=9–42; n =73) did not differ among years. Mean clutch size, egg width (EW), egg length, egg mass (EM) and clutch mass were positively correlated with female snout–vent length (SVL). Mean EW was the best predictor of female SVL. A partial correlation analysis of egg and clutch attributes found that independent of female SVL, EM increases with increasing clutch size.

Several biotic and abiotic factors can influence nest oxygen content during embryogenesis. Several of these factors were determined during each developmental stage of green sea turtle embryos on Wan-an Island, Penghu Archipelago, Taiwan. We examined oxygen content in 7 nests in 2007 and 11 in 2008. Oxygen in the adjacent sand, total and viable clutch sizes, air, sand and nest temperatures, and sand characters of each nest were also determined. Oxygen content was lower in late stages than in the early and middle stages. It was also lower in the middle layer than in the upper and bottom layers. Nest temperature showed opposite trends, reaching its maximum value in late stages of development. Nest oxygen content was influenced by fraction of viable eggs, total clutch sizes, sand temperatures, maximum nest temperature and maximum change in the nest temperature during incubation. Clutch size during embryogenesis was the most influential factor overall. However, the major influential factors were different for different developmental stages. In the first half of the incubation, the development rate was low, and the change in the nest oxygen content was influenced mainly by the clutch size. During the second half, the rapid embryonic development rate became the dominant factor, and hatchling activities caused even greater oxygen consumption during the last stage of development.

Clutch sizes of gamebirds decrease in a hyperbolic fashion towards the equator, but their clutch investment (total clutch mass as a proportion of female body weight) does not vary with latitude, regardless of whether body mass and phylogeny are factored out. In contrast, clutch sizes of wildfowl increase towards the tropics, but when corrected for body mass and phylogeny, no latitudinal pattern remains. Clutch investment by wildfowl peaks in the tropics, but this relationship becomes insignificant when body size and phylogeny are factored out. These contrasting patterns are explored in terms of habitat type, and the groups’ shared precocial development mode.

We quantified sexual size dimorphism, diet and reproduction in the Starred Agama, Laudakia stellio, in northern Sinai. Males were larger than females in snout-vent length and head index. The species is a sit-and-wait predator and feeds on insects, mainly coleopterans. About 30% of stomachs included plant material. No difference between sexes existed in terms of prey size preference. The reproductive season is seen to be year round with no distinctive seasonality. The smallest sexually mature female measured 92 mm SVL, whereas the smallest sexually reproductive male was 89 mm SVL. Clutch size ranged from 6 to 18 eggs.

The demography of the lizard Eumeces okadae was studied for 4 years on Miyake-jima, in the Izu Islands, central Japan. Most males matured at 3 years of age with a mean snout-vent length of 77.5 mm. Females matured at 3–4 years with a mean SVL of 77.8 mm, and reproduced biennially thereafter. Growth continued after maturity with a decreasing rate. In females, annual growth was negligible in reproductive years, but resumed markedly in non-reproductive years. Clutch size increased with SVL and was used to construct a fecundity schedule. Population density (exclusive of hatchlings) was estimated to be ca. 4000 individuals/ha in August, an exceptionally high density for lizards. Before introduction of the weasel onto Miyake-jima, low predation pressure had allowed E. okadae to maintain a high population density. Estimated annual survival rates were 36% for hatchlings, 56% for yearlings, 80% for 2-year-olds, 63% for adult males and 76% for adult females. The cohort generation time (6.95 years) was so long that the E. okadae population can be characterized by a combination of low natality and slow turnover.

Widely distributed terrestrial ectotherms from the southern European peninsulas show patterns of subdivision (related to isolation in temperate refugia) that allow us to test the relative importance of phylogeographic lineage, population of origin and familial effects as sources of variation for life-history traits. We collected gravid females from 15 geographically separated populations of the lacertid lizard Psammodromus algirus, a widely distributed species with well differentiated eastern and western lineages. We incubated eggs under two treatments of constant (28°C) and fluctuating (28 ± 4°C) temperature, and we examined clutch, population, and lineage effects on several traits of females, eggs, and hatchlings. Incubation time was mainly explained by differences between lineages, but it was also influenced by population and female effects. Within each lineage, incubation was shorter at cooler and wetter sites, and for a given climate it was shorter for eastern than for western populations, suggesting that countergradient variation has evolved independently in the two lineages. Female size, clutch size, and relative fecundity were primarily influenced by inter-population differences, a pattern that seemed attributable to environmental differences in productivity, because mean female size was positively correlated with a gradient of increasing precipitation and decreasing temperature. Clutch size was mainly, but not entirely, dependent on female SVL, suggesting both a proximate effect of local conditions and intrinsic differences among populations. Females from drier and warmer sites produced larger hatchlings. Mean egg mass was mainly determined by familial effects. Eggs incubated at a constant temperature hatched earlier than did their siblings incubated at fluctuating temperatures, a fact that could be explained by considering that in Mediterranean environments developmental rate might increase at a lower speed above average incubation temperature than it does decrease below it.

We present a comparative analysis of the morphological and reproductive characteristics of adult female Anolis nebulosus, an arboreal lizard found on both mainland and insular habitats near the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Females from San Pancho Island were larger in all measured morphological variables than females from Biological Field Station Chamela (BFSCH) on the mainland, and those also reproduced at smaller body size (snout‐vent length, SVL: range = 35–44,  = 39 mm) than females on San Pancho Island (range = 40–47,  = 43 mm). Egg mass and egg volume were also greater on San Pancho Island, but clutch frequency was higher on BFSCH during breeding season; in this place, one egg every 8 days over a period of 4 months (123 days) versus one egg every 10 days over a period of 4 months (130 days) on San Pancho Island. Thus, we conclude that certain characteristics related to reproduction (e.g. size at sexual maturity, egg mass and egg volume) in A. nebulosus with populations inhabiting islands and mainland, vary primarily in accordance with female SVL. These variations are most likely a response to the different pressures where A. nebulosus inhabits on environments the islands and mainland near the Pacific Coast of Mexico.

Orchid Island, 92  km off the southeast coast of Taiwan, has the northernmost tropical forests in East Asia. We assessed effects of habitat management by Orchid Island inhabitants, the Yami people, on spider diversity by comparing assemblages collected from the ground to canopy among four habitats (natural forest, cultivated woodland, second growth forest and grasslands) that receive different degrees of disturbance. Species and guild composition did not differ among replicates of habitat but differed significantly among habitats. Variation in spider diversity was inversely correlated with vegetation density. Cultivated woodland subjected to an intermediate level of disturbances had a lower understory vegetation density than natural forest, but higher spider diversity. Neither insect abundance nor biomass varied significantly among habitats suggesting little room for effects of prey availability on spider diversity. It appears that the Yami people maintain high spider diversity on Orchid Island by generating novel habitat types with different vegetation structures and disturbance regimes.

This paper presents data on aspects of the reproductive ecology of a population of Podarcis bocagei in northwestern Spain, as monitored over a two-year period (1990–1991) Data were obtained principally on the basis of mark-recapture experiments, but also from laboratory hatching studies Mating took place between the end of March and July During the laying period, from May to July, 8 5% of reproductive females produced three clutches, 52 1% two clutches, and 39 4% one clutch In general, single clutches were produced by small females Only a small proportion of large females produced three clutches Mean clutch size was 4 8 eggs (range 4–7) in May, 4 3 (2–6) in June and 3 9 (2–4) in July There was sigmficant variation in the mean snout-to-vent length (SVL) of females laying in each month of the season Both clutch size and mean single-egg volume increased with mother's SVL There was a significant partial correlation between egg volume and clutch size when both mother's SVL and month of laying were held constant There was no significant between-year variation in clutch size, breeding females' SVL, egg weight or relative clutch mass A delay in the timing of reproductive events in one year (1991) is attributable to adverse weather conditions during early spring Hatching occurred between July and September Hatch success (as estimated in 1989, 1990 and 1991 from natural nests at the study site) was high, ranging from 83% in 1991 to 91% in 1989 The mean SVL of female hatchlings was greater than that of male hatchlings By contrast, adult females had lower mean SVL than adult males

Reproductive performance varies with age in a wide range of organisms, and increasingly such patterns are interpreted in terms of state-dependent models. We sought to characterise 'state' with regards to age-related variation in clutch size, egg mass and timing of breeding in captive zebra finches Taeniopygia guttata , focusing on the roles of diet quality, age and breeding experience. Females on a high-quality diet laid larger clutches of larger eggs than did females on a low-quality diet. The effect of age on reproductive performance was examined by comparing females breeding (i.e. paired) for the first time at either 3- and/or 6-months of age. Clutch size increased with age but on the low-quality diet only, not on the high-quality diet. Furthermore, clutch size decreased between 3- and 6-months of age in birds bred first on the high-quality diet and then on the low-quality diet. Age did not affect egg mass but older birds had shorter laying intervals. Reproductive performance did not differ between females breeding at 6-months of age for the first or second time: the effects of age were not due to 'training' effects or experience specific to breeding (e.g. undergoing the physiological process of egg formation). In conclusion, nutritional condition (diet) emerged as a central component of state that could strongly influence, and even reverse, any age-dependent increase in primary reproductive performance.

We measured the reproductive output of Takydromus septentrionalis collected over 5 years between 1997 and 2005 to test the hypothesis that reproductive females should allocate an optimal fraction of accessible resources in a particular clutch and to individual eggs. Females laid 1–7 clutches per breeding season, with large females producing more, as well as larger clutches, than did small females. Clutch size, clutch mass, annual fecundity, and annual reproductive output were all positively related to female size (snout–vent length). Females switched from producing more, but smaller eggs in the first clutch to fewer, but larger eggs in the subsequent clutches. The mass-specific clutch mass was greater in the first clutch than in the subsequent clutches, but it did not differ among the subsequent clutches. Post-oviposition body mass, clutch size, and egg size showed differing degrees of annual variation, but clutch mass of either the first or the second clutch remained unchanged across the sampling years. The regression line describing the size–number trade-off was higher in the subsequent clutch than in the first clutch, but neither the line for first clutch, nor the line for the second clutch varied among years. Reproduction retarded growth more markedly in small females than in large ones. Our data show that: (1) trade-offs between size and number of eggs and between reproduction and growth (and thus, future reproduction) are evident in T. septentrionalis ; (2) females allocate an optimal fraction of accessible resources in current reproduction and to individual eggs; and (3) seasonal shifts in reproductive output and egg size are determined ultimately by natural selection.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 315–324.

Abstract

The reproductive biology of the Spiny-tailed Agamid Uromastyx philbyi, a herbivorous desert lizard, was studied in western Saudi Arabia. Reproduction is seasonal, with mating in early spring (March), oviposition in late spring (May–June), and hatching in summer (July). The mean clutch size was 6.67 eggs. Eggs are large (mean mass = 7.48 g) and relative clutch mass (RCM) averaged 0.49. Clutch mass and RCM increased with increasing egg mass. Clutch size, egg size, clutch mass, and RCM were significantly correlated with maternal body size.

Females of some insect species adjust the number of ovipositions and clutch size adaptively depending on conspecific density and probably experience. In a series of three experiments, we examined the effect of the presence of conspecifics, host quality, and oviposition experience on oviposition behavior and clutch size determination by females of the polyphagous fruit fly Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae). In the first experiment, we determined that grouped (eight females per cage) A. ludens females tended to visit and oviposit in more hosts than did solitary females probably as a result of stimulation by the presence of conspecifics. We also determined that females with previous oviposition experience visited and oviposited in more hosts than inexperienced ones. Importantly, when females were grouped, we observed significantly more landings on unoccupied hosts (i.e., devoid of flies) than on occupied ones (i.e., with at least one fly on it). However, oviposition experience, and not female density, was the most important factor affecting clutch size. Naive females deposited larger egg clutches than experienced ones. In the second experiment, we found that oviposition experience and host quality (i.e., clean fruit or fruit covered with a host marking pheromone [HMP] extract), influenced clutch size and the decision of females to defend or not defend the host. Clutch size and number of fights were greater on clean than on HMP-marked hosts. In the third experiment, we observed that host quality (i.e., size) played a significant role with regard to the number of female fights, host marking behavior, and clutch size. Specifically, females fought and dragged their aculeus longer on small- and medium-sized hosts than on large ones. But this behavior varied according to whether females were kept alone or grouped. Clutch size was greatest in the largest hosts. Considering all the above, we believe that the observed increase in ovipositional activity by grouped A. ludens females can be attributed to competition through mutual interference and not social facilitation as has been reported in other tephritid species.
