We study the final size equation for an epidemic in a subdivided population with general mixing patterns among subgroups. The equation is determined by a matrix with the same spectrum as the next generation matrix and it exhibits a threshold controlled by the common dominant eigenvalue, the basic reproduction number R0{\mathcal{R}_{0}}: There is a unique positive solution giving the size of the epidemic if and only if R0{\mathcal{R}_{0}} exceeds unity. When mixing heterogeneities arise only from variation in contact rates and proportionate mixing, the final size of the epidemic in a heterogeneously mixing population is always smaller than that in a homogeneously mixing population with the same basic reproduction number R0{\mathcal{R}_{0}}. For other mixing patterns, the relation may be reversed.  相似文献

The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) response of tooth enamel in a monenergetic neutron beam of 14 MeV was studied, with the aim to evaluate the relative neutron to 60Co sensitivity. Three samples of tooth enamel powder were irradiated in air. A whole tooth and a powdered sample were irradiated in a geometrical PMMA phantom, in order to simulate the real exposure of a tooth inside a human head. The measured dose in enamel was compared to the dose calculated by Monte Carlo simulation. The relative neutron to 60Co sensitivity using different reference materials (air, water and enamel) was evaluated as well. Large differences in sensitivity values were found depending on the reference material: the obtained relative neutron to 60Co sensitivity was 0.47±0.09 for enamel and 0.15±0.03 for water. A comparison with results in fast neutron fields is reported.  相似文献

Three prostate cancer susceptibility genes have been reported to be linked to different regions on chromosome 1: HPC1 at 1q24-25, PCAP at 1q42-43, and CAPB at 1p36. Replication studies analyzing each of these regions have yielded inconsistent results. To evaluate linkage across this chromosome systematically, we performed multipoint linkage analyses with 50 microsatellite markers spanning chromosome 1 in 159 hereditary prostate cancer families (HPC), including 79 families analyzed in the original report describing HPC1 linkage. The highest lod scores for the complete dataset of 159 families were observed at 1q24-25 at which the parametric lod score assuming heterogeneity (hlod) was 2.54 (P=0.0006) with an allele sharing lod of 2.34 (P=0.001) at marker D1S413, although only weak evidence was observed in the 80 families not previously analyzed for this region (hlod=0.44, P=0.14, and allele sharing lod=0.67, P=0.08). In the complete data set, the evidence for linkage across this region was very broad, with allele sharing lod scores greater than 0.5 extending approximately 100 cM from 1p13 to 1q32, possibly indicating the presence of multiple susceptibility genes. Elsewhere on chromosome 1, some evidence of linkage was observed at 1q42-43, with a peak allele sharing lod of 0.56 (P=0.11) and hlod of 0.24 (P=0.25) at D1S235. For analysis of the CAPB locus at 1p36, we focused on six HPC families in our collection with a history of primary brain cancer; four of these families had positive linkage results at 1p36, with a peak allele sharing lod of 0.61 (P=0.09) and hlod of 0.39 (P=0.16) at D1S407 in all six families. These results are consistent with the heterogeneous nature of hereditary prostate cancer, and the existence of multiple loci on chromosome 1 for this disease.  相似文献

Midstalk rot caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is an important disease of sunflower in its main areas of cultivation. The objectives of this study were to (1) verify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for midstalk-rot resistance found in F3 families of the NDBLOSsel × CM625 population in recombinant inbred lines (RIL) derived from the same cross; (2) re-estimate their position and genetic effects; (3) draw inferences about the predictive quality of QTL for midstalk-rot resistance identified in the F3 families as compared to those in the RIL. Phenotypic data for three resistance (leaf lesion, stem lesion, and speed of fungal growth) and two morphological traits (leaf length and leaf length with petiole) were obtained from 317 RIL following artificial infection in field experiments across two environments. For genotyping the 248 RIL, we selected 41 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers based on their association with QTL for Sclerotinia midstalk-rot resistance in an earlier study. The resistance traits showed intermediate to high heritabilities and were significantly correlated with each other Genotypic correlations between F3 families and the RIL were highly significant and ranged between 0.50 for leaf length and 0.64 for stem lesion. For stem lesion, two genomic regions on linkage group (LG) 8 and LG16 explaining 26.5% of the genotypic variance for Sclerotinia midstalk-rot resistance were consistent across generations. For this trait, the genotypic correlation between the observed performance and its prediction based on QTL positions and effects in F3 families was surprisingly high The genetic effects and predictive quality of these two QTL are promising for application in marker-assisted selection to Sclerotinia midstalk-rot resistance.  相似文献

Genetic variation is often lower within island populations, however islands may also harbor divergent genetic variation. The likelihood that insular populations are genetically diverse or divergent should be influenced by island size and isolation. We tested this assumption by comparing patterns of genetic variation across all major island song sparrow populations along the Pacific North American coast. Allelic richness was moderately lowered even on islands which are close to large, potential sources. The most significant differences in allelic richness occurred on very small or highly remote islands. Gene diversity was significantly lower only on remote or very small islands. We found that island populations contribute to regional genetic variation through both the amount of genetic variation and the uniqueness of that variation. The partitioning of this contribution was associated with the size and isolation of the island populations.  相似文献

The critical level for SO 2 susceptibility of Populus × canescens is approximately 1.2 μL L ?1 SO 2 . Both sulfite oxidation and sulfite reduction and assimilation contribute to SO 2 detoxification.

Abstract

In the present study, uptake, susceptibility and metabolism of SO2 were analyzed in the deciduous tree species poplar (Populus × canescens). A particular focus was on the significance of sulfite oxidase (SO) for sulfite detoxification, as SO has been characterized as a safety valve for SO2 detoxification in herbaceous plants. For this purpose, poplar plants were exposed to different levels of SO2 (0.65, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 μL L?1) and were characterized by visible injuries and at the physiological level. Gas exchange parameters (stomatal conductance for water vapor, CO2 assimilation, SO2 uptake) of the shoots were compared with metabolite levels (sulfate, thiols) and enzyme activities [SO, adenosine 5′-phosphosulfate reductase (APR)] in expanding leaves (80–90 % expanded). The critical dosage of SO2 that confers injury to the leaves was 1.2 μL L?1 SO2. The observed increase in sulfur containing compounds (sulfate and thiols) in the expanding leaves strongly correlated with total SO2 uptake of the plant shoot, whereas SO2 uptake rate was strongly correlated with stomatal conductance for water vapor. Furthermore, exposure to high concentration of SO2 revealed channeling of sulfite through assimilatory sulfate reduction that contributes in addition to SO-mediated sulfite oxidation to sulfite detoxification in expanding leaves of this woody plant species.  相似文献

Necessity to understand the role of additional food as a tool in biological control programs is being increasingly felt, particularly due to its eco-friendly nature. A thorough mathematical analysis in this direction revealed the vital role of quality and quantity of the additional food in the controllability of the predator–prey systems. In this article controllability of the additional food—provided predator–prey system is studied from perspectives of pest eradication and biological conservation. Time optimal paths have been constructed to drive the state of the system to a desired terminal state by choosing quantity of the additional food as control variable. The theory developed in this article has been illustrated by solving problems related to pest eradication and biological conservation.  相似文献

Two approaches have been developed to construct plasmids that mediate RNA interference to inhibit the replication and expression of HBV in 2.2.15 cell. The overlapping PCR extension and restriction enzyme-digestion were used to generate DNA fragments encoding designed shRNA based on sequences of ORF C of HBV genome. The pU6 derived vectors were constructed to develop plasmid based shRNA delivery systems termed pU6/HBVi. There were significant reductions in the expression of HBsAg and HBeAg between cells transfected with pU6/HBVi and control groups (as to HBsAg: P < 0. 01; and HBeAg: P < 0. 01). Consistently, the HBV DNA copies were reduced from 2.71 x 10(7) to <5 x 10(2) copies with or without pU6/HBVi. These results suggested that shRNA delivery by recombinant plasmids harboring shRNA encoding DNA fragment of interest generated either by overlapping PCR extension or restriction enzyme-digestion, could inhibit expressions of viral proteins and reduce viral replications. The pU6 derived plasmids might be a useful shRNA delivery system in mammalian cells. In addition, we found siRNA based on stealth 2311 was a potent RNAi target of HBV genome.  相似文献

Hybrids between shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata Mill.) and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) have increased since the 1950s throughout the southeastern USA. Previously, greater sprouting capacity and the formation of a basal crook that lowers the height of dormant buds may have favored pure shortleaf pine populations on fire prone sites. The objective of this study was to determine how seasonal timing of topkill by both fire and topclipping affect sprouting of shortleaf × loblolly pine F1 hybrids compared to their parent open-pollinated populations during their third growing season. A factorial combination of top-clipping (hand pruners) and girdling by fire (propane torch) was conducted on November 2010, January, March, and April 2011 and sprouting response was measured after the growing season. Survival of topkilled shortleaf pine (94 %) was greatest followed by hybrid (78 %) and loblolly pine (35 %). However, species effects varied with topkill treatment and treatment date because survival was relatively lower for loblolly and hybrid pines in the burn-only as well as the November and April treatment dates while survival of shortleaf pine was consistently high. The number of sprouts was greatest for shortleaf (32.3) intermediate for hybrid (23.8) and lowest for loblolly pine (12.0). Overall, 83 % of shortleaf pine, 35 % of hybrid pine, and 5 % of loblolly pine exhibited a basal crook. The height from ground line to the lowest sprout was shortest for shortleaf (3.5 mm), intermediate for hybrids (7.7 mm), and largest for loblolly pine (21.3 mm). While the hybrid saplings exhibited intermediate performance in survival, sprouting capacity, and crooking, pure shortleaf pine were superior and are probably better suited to recover from fire.  相似文献

The pure-tone thresholds of four domestic female chickens were determined from 2 Hz to 9 kHz using the method of conditioned suppression/avoidance. At a level of 60 dB sound pressure level (re 20 μN/m2), their hearing range extends from 9.1 Hz to 7.2 kHz, with a best sensitivity of 2.6 dB at 2 kHz. Chickens have better sensitivity than humans for frequencies below 64 Hz; indeed, their sensitivity to infrasound exceeds that of the homing pigeon. However, when threshold testing moved to the lower frequencies, the animals required additional training before their final thresholds were obtained, suggesting that they may perceive frequencies below 64 Hz differently than higher frequencies.  相似文献

Soybean BAC-based physical maps provide a useful platform for gene and QTL map-based cloning, EST mapping, marker development, genome sequencing, and comparative genomic research. Soybean physical maps for “Forrest” and “Williams 82” representing the southern and northern US soybean germplasm base, respectively, have been constructed with different fingerprinting methods. These physical maps are complementary for coverage of gaps on the 20 soybean linkage groups. More than 5,000 genetic markers have been anchored onto the Williams 82 physical map, but only a limited number of markers have been anchored to the Forrest physical map. A mapping population of Forrest × Williams 82 made up of 1,025 F8 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) was used to construct a reference genetic map. A framework map with almost 1,000 genetic markers was constructed using a core set of these RILs. The core set of the population was evaluated with the theoretical population using equality, symmetry and representativeness tests. A high-resolution genetic map will allow integration and utilization of the physical maps to target QTL regions of interest, and to place a larger number of markers into a map in a more efficient way using a core set of RILs.  相似文献

We propose a spatially distributed continuous model for the spheroid response to radiation, in which the oxygen distribution is represented by means of a diffusion-consumption equation and the radiosensitivity parameters depend on the oxygen concentration. The induction of lethally damaged cells by a pulse of radiation, their death, and the degradation of dead cells are included. The compartments of lethally damaged cells and of dead cells are subdivided into different subcompartments to simulate the delays that occur in cell death and cell degradation, with a gain in model flexibility. It is shown that, for a single irradiation and under the hypothesis of a sufficiently small spheroid radius, the model can be reformulated as a linear stationary ordinary differential equation system. For this system, the parameter identifiability has been investigated, showing that the set of unknown parameters can be univocally identified by exploiting the response of the model to at least two different radiation doses. Experimental data from spheroids originated from different cell lines are used to identify the unknown parameters and to test the predictive capability of the model with satisfactory results.  相似文献

This paper studies a class of dynamical systems that model multi-species ecosystems. These systems are ‘resource bounded’ in the sense that species compete to utilize an underlying limiting resource or substrate. This boundedness means that the relevant state space can be reduced to a simplex, with coordinates representing the proportions of substrate utilized by the various species. If the vector field is inward pointing on the boundary of the simplex, the state space is forward invariant under the system flow, a requirement that can be interpreted as the presence of non-zero exogenous recruitment. We consider conditions under which these model systems have a unique interior equilibrium that is globally asymptotically stable. The systems we consider generalize classical multi-species Lotka–Volterra systems, the behaviour of which is characterized by properties of the community (or interaction) matrix. However, the more general systems considered here are not characterized by a single matrix, but rather a family of matrices. We develop a set of ‘explicit conditions’ on the basis of a notion of ‘uniform diagonal dominance’ for such a family of matrices, that allows us to extract a set of sufficient conditions for global asymptotic stability based on properties of a single, derived matrix. Examples of these explicit conditions are discussed.  相似文献

Alcohol intake is associated with numerous degenerative disorders, and the detrimental effects of alcohol may be due to its influence on plasma membrane and cellular transport systems. The aim of the present study was to compare in vitro and in vivo effects of ethanol on rabbit erythrocyte ATPase activities and correlate them with ethanol-induced oxidative stress. Age-matched male rabbits were given 5% ethanol in 2% sucrose solution, for 6 weeks ad libitum; control animals were given tap water. Daily intake of ethanol was 5 g/kg body weight; this experimental regimen resulted in an average serum ethanol concentration of 16.77 ± 2.00 mM/l. After this period, blood was collected, serum ethanol concentration was determined and erythrocyte membranes were prepared according to the method of Post et al. Activities of Na+/K+- and Mg2+-ATPases were determined. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) assay was used to detect levels of lipid peroxidation, a major indicator of oxidative stress. In vitro ethanol inhibits both Na+/K+-ATPase and Mg2+-ATPase, but Na+/K+-ATPase is more sensitive to the ethanol-induced inhibition. Increasing concentration of ethanol increased TBARS production, but significant difference was attained only at 5 and 12.5 mM of ethanol. Chronic ethanol consumption induced significant increase in Na+/K+- and Mg2+-ATPase activity, and TBARS production. Our results suggest that increased ATPase activity induced by chronic ethanol consumption is due to oxidative, induced modification of membrane phospholipids and proteins, which are responsible for inhibition of ATPase activity. Increased production of TBARS induced by in vitro exposure to ethanol is not the only factor that influences ATPases activity. Further research is needed to elucidate this relationship.  相似文献

The probability of, and time to, fixation of a mutation in a population has traditionally been studied by the classic Wright–Fisher model where population size is constant. Recent theoretical expansions have covered fluctuating populations in various ways but have not incorporated models of how the environment fluctuates in combination with different levels of density-compensation affecting fecundity. We tested the hypothesis that the probability of, and time to, fixation of neutral, advantageous and deleterious mutations is dependent on how the environment fluctuates over time, and on the level of density-compensation. We found that fixation probabilities and times were dependent on the pattern of autocorrelation of carrying capacity over time and interacted with density-compensation. The pattern found was most pronounced at small population sizes. The patterns differed greatly depending on whether the mutation was neutral, advantageous, or disadvantageous. The results indicate that the degree of mismatch between carrying capacity and population size is a key factor, rather than population size per se, and that effective population sizes can be very low also when the census population size is far above the carrying capacity. This study highlights the need for explicit population dynamic models and models for environmental fluctuations for the understanding of the dynamics of genes in populations.  相似文献
