In northern Sweden, the availability of arboreal lichens (Bryoria fuscescens, Alectoria sarmentosa) as winter grazing resources is an important element in reindeer husbandry. With the industrialization of forestry, forests rich in arboreal lichens have diminished considerably. Here, we analyze how forestry has impacted lichen availability from the 1920's to the present day and model its future development assuming different forest management scenarios.We recorded the current occurrence of B. fuscescens in 144 sampling plots, stratified by forest age class and dominant tree species in a 26,600 ha boreal forest landscape that is used for both reindeer herding and forestry. Lichen abundance was visually estimated in four classes: none, sparse, moderate and abundant. A binary logistic model using forest age as the independent variable was developed to predict the probability of lichens being present. Using this model, we found that lichens were present in stands that are at least 63 years old. Because of the relative paucity of stands rich in arboreal lichens, it was not possible to reliably determine how age affects the variation in abundance of older forest stands. The historical development of forests where arboreal lichens could potentially occur was studied using historic forestry records dating back 80 years. Between 1926 and the present day, forestry has reduced the cover of forests older than 60 years from 84% to 34%. The likely future spatial coverage of these stands over the next 120 years was estimated for two different management scenarios and an unmanaged reference scenario, using the Heureka strategic planning program. Under both the "business as usual" scenario and that involving more intensive forestry, continued decreases in lichen availability are projected. Our results emphasize the importance of alternative forestry practices, such as prolonged rotation periods, to increase the availability of arboreal lichens as a grazing resource for reindeer.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of lichens and leakage of electrolytes fromthem were studied to assess the effects of ozone on four epiphytes.Bryoriacapillaris(Ach.) Brodo & Hawksw.,Bryoria fuscescens(Gyelnik)Brodo & Hawksw.,Hypogymnia physodes(L.) Nyl. andUsnea hirta(L.)Wigg. were fumigated with control (<10), 40, 150 and 300ppb ozone in controlled growth chambers for 2 and 4 week periods.The ultrastructural results suggest a direct effect of O3oncarbon assimilation and storage in these lichens. Both the highconcentrations of ozone (150 ppb and 300 ppb) and longer exposuretime significantly increased starch volume and electron opacityof the pyrenoid matrix in chloroplasts ofU. hirtaandB. capillaris.Furthermore, inU. hirta, cytoplasmic lipid droplets and thenumber of pyrenoglobuli in pyrenoids were significantly increasedat higher ozone concentrations.B. fuscescensshowed little responseto ozone at the ultrastructural level. In bothBryoriaspeciesthe potassium leakage, and inB. fuscescensthe conductivity ofleachate, decreased during 4 weeks fumigation with high concentrations(150 and 300 ppb) of ozone. Spatial patterns of photobiont diversity in some Nostoc-containing lichens   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
Patterns of photobiont diversity were examined in some Nostoc -containing lichens using the nucleotide sequence of the cyanobacterial tRNALeu (UAA) intron. Lichen specimens collected in northwestern USA were analysed and the sequence data were compared with tRNALeu(UAA) intron sequences previously obtained from lichens in northern Europe. Generally, it is the species identity of a lichen rather than the geographical origin of the specimen that determines the identity of the cyanobiont. Identical intron sequences were found in Peltigera membranacea specimens collected in Oregon (USA) and in Sweden, and very similar sequences were also found in Nephroma resupinatum thalli collected in Oregon and Finland. Furthermore, in mixed assemblages where two Peltigera species grew in physical contact with each other, the different lichen species housed different photobiont strains. There is however not a one-to-one relation between mycobiont and photobiont as some intron sequences were found in more than one lichen species, and different intron sequences were found in different samples of some lichen taxa. Peltigera venosa exhibited a higher level of photobiont diversity than any other lichen species studied, and several intron sequences could for the first time be obtained from a single thallus. It is not clear whether this is evidence of lower cyanobiont specificity, or reflects an ability to exhibit different degrees of lichenization with different Nostoc strains. In one specimen of P. venosa , which contained bipartite cyanosymbiodemes and tripartite, cephalodiate thalli, both thallus types contained the same intron sequence.  相似文献

Population densities of microtine rodents were studied along an air pollution gradient in the Kola Peninsula, Russia, by long-term and short-term trapping. The study area is affected by high sulphur dioxide and heavy metal emissions from the Severonikel copper-nickel smelter in Monchegorsk. The density of Clethrionomys rufocanus, the most abundant vole species in the area, was lowest close to the smelter and increased with distance up to the farthest, less polluted trapping sites. Clethrionomys glareolus, C. rutilus and Lemmus lemmus were absent from the most severely damaged area and were also scarce at the moderately polluted area 28 km south of the smelter. Although the population of C. glareolus has previously been cyclic at the moderately polluted area, we were unable to demonstrate any regular cycle. The most likely explanation for the low number of microtine rodents in the damaged and moderately polluted areas in a decrease in the quantity of important food plants: epiphytic lichens for C. glareolus and possibly C. rutilus, mosses for L. lemmus and seed plants, especially Vaccinium myrtillus, for C. rufocanus. Close to the smelter, direct toxic effects of heavy metals may also reduce population densities. The results show that pollutants may change the relative proportions of microtine species.  相似文献

Pollution from the Cu-Ni smelter at Monchegorsk, Kola peninsula, has resulted in major changes in the plant communities surrounding the smelter. However, very little pollution reaches northern Finland, which makes it possible to use this area for field experiments to study the mechanism of community change under pollution load. A field experiment was established to study the possible effect of pollution on the subarctic forest community, with Cu-Ni pollution and acid rain (AR) used as treatments. A fungicide (F)-treatment was also added to estimate the significance of plant-fungus interactions in community response. Floristic similarity decreased during the experiment, both within and between treatments. Cu-Ni- and AR-treatments did not have any effect on species richness. The Cu-Ni treatment reduced significantly the number of new species arrivals in plots, whereas the number of local extinctions remained constant. The heavy metal treatment resulted in a decrease in the bryophyte cover. The cover of Linnea borealis increased slightly due to the Cu-Ni-treatment, but decreased due to the AR-treatment. The F-treatment also resulted in a lower richness than in the untreated variant. Again, this effect was due to the reduced number of arrivals, whereas the number of local extinctions remained unchanged. The F-treatment also resulted in a higher cover of bryophytes and dwarf shrubs. Changes in species richness of subarctic understorey plant communities were mainly caused by the differential arrival of species under different environmental conditions. As the number of arrivals was negatively correlated to the F-treatment, the presence of (presumably positive) interactions between vascular plants and fungi may have an influence on the response of a community to pollution.  相似文献

Photosystem II (PSII) activation after hydration with water or humid air was measured in four hydrophilic and a generalist lichen to test the hypothesis that slow activation might explain habitat restriction in the former group. For the hydrophilic species, activation was after 4 h nearly completed in Lobaria amplissima and Platismatia norvegica, while only c. 50% for Bryoria bicolor and Usnea longissima. The generalist Platismatia glauca was activated instantaneously. The effect of this on lichen field performance was investigated using a dynamic model separating the two water sources rain and humid air. Model simulations were made using the species‐specific characteristics and climate data from 12 stream microhabitats. For U. longissima, slow PSII activation could reduce realized photosynthesis by a factor of five. Bryoria bicolor was almost as severely affected, while P. norvegica displayed moderate reductions. Lobaria amplissima displayed longer realized activity periods even in unfavourable microclimates, possibly because of a higher water loss resistance. Both close proximity to streams and presence of turbulent water had a positive impact on realized activity among the slowly activated species, coinciding with observed distribution patterns of hydrophilic species. The results presented here may thus partly explain observed habitat restrictions of rare hydrophilic lichens.  相似文献

The relative impact of lichen photobiont and mycobiont was evaluated by submitting nine lichen species with: (i) different photobiont types; (ii) different lichen growth forms; and (iii) different nutrients, pH, humidity preferences; to a range of Cu concentrations (μM) supplied in repeated cycles to simulate the natural process of uptake under field conditions. The physiological performance of the photosystem II photochemical reactions was measured using Fv/Fm and the metabolic activity of the mycobiont was evaluated using ergosterol and intracellular K-loss as indicators. Lichens with higher cation exchange capacity showed higher intracellular Cu uptake and their ecology seemed to be associated with low-nutrient environments. Thus the wall and external matrix, mainly characteristic of the mycobiont partner, cannot be ignored as the first site of interaction of metals with lichens. No common intracellular Cu concentration threshold was found for the physiological impacts observed in the different species. Most physiological effects of Cu uptake in sensitive lichens occurred for intracellular Cu below 200 μg/g dw whereas more tolerant species were able to cope with intracellular Cu at least 3 times higher. Cyanobacterial lichens showed to be more sensitive to Cu uptake than green-algal lichens. Within the Trebouxia lichens, different species showed different sensitivities to Cu uptake, suggesting that the mycobiont may change the microenvironment close to the photobiont partner providing different degrees of protection. Despite the fact that the photobiont is the productive partner, the metabolic activity of the mycobiont of lichen species adapted to environments rich in nutrients, showed to be more sensitive to Cu uptake than the photochemical performance of the photobiont.  相似文献

Biogeochemical signatures were investigated in transplanted and native lichens near a major pollution source using sensitive multi-element chemical analysis. Transplants were established across a 60 km transect centred on the smelter town of Karabash, Ural Mountains, Russia. Statistically significant trends in element concentrations were recorded, some below one part per million. Fine metal particles are accumulated from pollution aerosols. Prolonged exposure may lead to cellular damage and enhanced accumulation or element loss. 206Pb: 207Pb isotope ratios are similar to those associated with airborne particles in Europe and Russia; an outlier near Kyshtym with a lower ratio indicates a source with a higher 235U : 238U ratio. The method is discrete, sensitive, able to detect short-term pollution episodes and useful for understanding element cycling, which is of critical importance for human and environmental health.  相似文献

We analyzed mitochondrial DNA polymorphisms to search for evidence of the genetic structure and patterns of admixture in 124 populations (N = 1407 trees) across the distribution of Scots pine in Europe and Asia. The markers revealed only a weak population structure in Central and Eastern Europe and suggested postglacial expansion to middle and northern latitudes from multiple sources. Major mitotype variants include the remnants of Scots pine at the north-western extreme of the distribution in the Scottish Highlands; two main variants (western and central European) that contributed to the contemporary populations in Norway and Sweden; the central-eastern European variant present in the Balkan region, Finland, and Russian Karelia; and a separate one common to most eastern European parts of Russia and western Siberia. We also observe signatures of a distinct refugium located in the northern parts of the Black Sea basin that contributed to the patterns of genetic variation observed in several populations in the Balkans, Ukraine, and western Russia. Some common haplotypes of putative ancient origin were shared among distant populations from Europe and Asia, including the most southern refugial stands that did not participate in postglacial recolonization of northern latitudes. The study indicates different genetic lineages of the species in Europe and provides a set of genetic markers for its finer-scale population history and divergence inference.  相似文献

Deciduous forests with temperate broad‐leaved tree species are particularily important in terms of biodiversity and its protection, but are threatened habitats in northern Europe. Using multivariate analyses we studied the effect of forest site type, environmental variables and host tree properties on epiphytic lichen synusiae as well as on the composition of species‐specific functional traits. Epiphytic lichens were examined on Acer platanoides, Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus robur, Tilia cordata, Ulmus glabra and U. laevis in two types of forests: Humulus‐type floodplain forests and Lunaria‐type boreo‐nemoral forests on the talus slopes of limestone escarpment (klint forests). Klint forests located near the seashore were under greater maritime influence compared to floodplain forests located in inland Estonia which experience stronger air temperature contrasts. In addition to stand level and climatic variables, tree level factors (bark pH, trunk circumference and cover of bryophytes) considerably affected the species composition of the lichen synusiae. Overall, 137 lichen species were recorded, including 14 red‐listed species characteristic of deciduous trees. We defined 13 lichen societies and showed their preference to forests of a specific site type and/or host tree properties. In forests of both types, most of the epiphytic lichens were crustose, and had apothecia as the fruit bodies and chlorococcoid algae as the photobiont. However, the proportion of lichens with a foliose or fruticose growth form, as well as the proportion of lichens with vegatative diaspores, were higher in floodplain forests. In klint forests with a stronger influence from the wind, crustose species completely dominated, while species with vegetative diaspores were rare and most species dispersed sexually. Lichens with Trentepohlia as the photobiont were characteristic of these forests, and lichens with lirellate ascomata were prevailing, indicating the great uniqueness of the kint forests for epiphytic lichens in the boreo‐nemoral region.  相似文献

We studied the effects of aerial pollution on the expression of Delayed Inducible Resistance (DIR) against herbivores in the boreal willow Salix borealis , growing naturally around the nickel-copper smelter at Monchegorsk (NW Russia). In slightly polluted and clean sites, the manual defoliation (simulated insect herbivory) of willows resulted in the development of DIR, which was expressed in the post-treatment year as (i) a decrease in leaf damage, (ii) the dispersion of grazing damage within a plant, and (iii) a decrease in foliar quality, detected by the adverse effects on the larval relative growth rate of the autumnal moth, Epirrita autumnata . At the same time, in heavily and moderately polluted sites these effects were not observed, suggesting that DIR in plants growing under pollution impact was not expressed. Since DIR may be one of the important feedbacks regulating the population dynamics of herbivores, the disturbance of this feedback by pollution-induced environmental deterioration may contribute to the high densities of many herbivorous insects in polluted areas.  相似文献

During three years of research on epiphytic lichen communities as indicators of environmental change in northern Thailand plots were set up in a range of forest types between 400 and 1600 m in 1991/2 and revisited in 1993. Other areas were visited in 1993 and collections made in a wider range of geographical, altitudinal and vegetation conditions in Thailand. From this data factors influencing the distribution of lichens in a monsoon climate are outlined and characteristic components of the lichen flora given at family, generic and where possible specific level. Dominant taxa of the montane forests include hygrophilous macrolichens of the 'Lobarion' that are also a characteristic component of old growth fagaceous forests in Europe, whereas the evergreen forests are dominated by moisture-dependent crustose taxa with a trentepohlioid photobiont, and the deciduous dipterocarp forests by often brightly coloured xerophytic lichens with a trebouxioid photobiont. Taxa are proposed as indicators of forest type including those that are indicators of old-growth forests and of disturbance. Quantitative recording of selected taxa at genus and species level is suggested to estimate rates of change in monsoon forests in southeast Asia.  相似文献

In stark contrast to other species within the Salmonidae family, phylogeographic information on European grayling, Thymallus thymallus, is virtually nonexistent. In this paper, we utilized mitochondrial DNA polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (mtDNA PCR-RFLP) and sequence variation to infer the postglacial dispersal routes of T. thymallus into and within northern Europe, and to locate geographically, potential evolutionarily distinct populations. Mitochondrial analyses revealed a total of 27 T. thymallus haplotypes which clustered into three distinct lineages. Average pairwise interlineage divergence was four and nine times higher than average intralineage divergence for RFLP and sequence data, respectively. Two European grayling individuals from the easternmost sample in Russia exhibited haplotypes more genetically diverged from any T. thymallus haplotype than T. arcticus haplotype, and suggested that hybridization/introgression zone of these two sister species may extend much further west than previously thought. Geographic division of the lineages was generally very clear with northern Europe comprising of two genetically differentiated areas: (i) Finland, Estonia and north-western Russia; and (ii) central Germany, Poland and western Fennoscandia. Average interpopulation divergence in North European T. thymallus was 10 times higher than that observed in a recent mtDNA study of North American T. arcticus. We conclude that (i) North European T. thymallus populations have survived dramatic Pleistocene temperature oscillations and originate from ancient eastern and central European refugia; (ii) genetic divergence of population groups within northern Europe is substantial and geographically distinct; and (iii) the remainder of Europe harbours additional differentiated assemblages that likely descend from a Danubian refugium. These findings should provide useful information for developing appropriate conservation strategies for European grayling and exemplify a case with a clear need for multinational co-operation for managing and conserving biodiversity.  相似文献

Effects of simulated acid rain and heavy metal deposition onthe ultrastructure of the lichenBryoria fuscescens(Gyeln.) Brodoand Hawksw. were examined in a field study conducted in northernFinland. Lichens were exposed to simulated rain containing twolevels of a mixture of copper (Cu2+) and nickel (Ni2+) ionsalone or in combination with acid rain (H2SO4) at pH 3 over2 months in addition to ambient rainfall. The algal and fungalcomponents responded differently to pH and there was an interactionwith metal toxicity. The algal partner was the most sensitiveto acid rain and heavy metal combinations and had more degeneratecells than the fungal partner. Damage was apparent in chloroplastsand mitochondria, where thylakoid and mitochondrial cristaewere swollen. The fungal partner was the more sensitive to highconcentrations of metal ions in the absence of acidity, suggestingan ameliorating interaction between the metals and acidity.For algae, critical metal concentrations in the thallus were>50 µg g-1for Cu and >7 µg g-1for Ni in thepresence of acidity, and >20 µ g g-1for Ni in the absenceof acidity. Detrimental effects of heavy metals on fungal ultrastructurewere seen when thallus metal concentrations exceeded 400 µgg-1for Cu and 100 µg g-1d. wt for Ni. The distribution patterns of symbiotic algae are thought to be conferred mainly by their hosts, however, they may originate in algal environmental requirements as well. In lichens, predominantly terrestrial associations of fungi with algae or cyanobacteria, the ecological preferences of photobionts have not been directly studied so far. Here, we examine the putative environmental requirements in lichenized alga Asterochloris, and search for the existence of ecological guilds in Asterochloris-associating lichens. Therefore, the presence of phylogenetic signal in several environmental traits was tested. Phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated set of internal transcribed spacer rDNA and actin type I intron sequences from photobionts associated with lichens of the genera Lepraria and Stereocaulon (Stereocaulaceae, Ascomycota) revealed 13 moderately to well-resolved clades. Photobionts from particular algal clades were found to be associated with taxonomically different, but ecologically similar lichens. The rain and sun exposure were the most significant environmental factor, clearly distinguishing the Asterochloris lineages. The photobionts from ombrophobic and ombrophilic lichens were clustered in completely distinct clades. Moreover, two photobiont taxa were obviously differentiated based on their substrate and climatic preferences. Our study, thus reveals that the photobiont, generally the subsidiary member of the symbiotic lichen association, could exhibit clear preferences for environmental factors. These algal preferences may limit the ecological niches available to lichens and lead to the existence of specific lichen guilds.  相似文献

In the summers of 2001 and 2002, we quantitatively sampled human-biting flies in twelve sites located 1.6 to 63 km from a large copper-nickel smelter at Monchegorsk on the Kola Peninsula, Russia. We collected 429 specimens of three species of Ceratopogonidae, 92 specimens of seven species of Culicidae, 76 specimens of seven species of Tabanidae, and 4,788 specimens of 19 species of Simuliidae. Culicoides chiropterus was for the first time reported from the Kola Peninsula. Catches of Culicidae and Simuliidae decreased near the smelter, presumably due to the combined action of toxicity of pollutants, pollution-induced forest damage, and decline in vertebrate density. An abundance of Ceratopogonidae and Tabanidae, the size of the most common black fly species, Simulium pusillum, and the diversity of all families did not change along the pollution gradient.  相似文献

地衣是由低等植物中的藻类与菌类中的真菌和兰细菌共生而成的一群特殊的植物。由于耐寒耐旱对生活中的养分要求不高,在养纷贫瘠、环境恶劣的高山寒漠、平原、戈壁和沙漠中地衣都能生长,因而广泛地分布和生长在不同的生态环境中。有关新疆地衣方面的研究报道集中在物种分类水平上,对于地衣群落结构方面的研究比较少。因此,我们应用多元分析中的主分量分析及聚类分析方法对分布在天山森林生态系统中树生地衣植物群落进行数量分类并对群落结构物种多样性、相似性和均匀度等群落参数进行了比较系统的研究。结果表明, 在西部天山不同森林生态系统中树生地衣群落的分布与海拔高度和树种有密切的关系, 不同海拔的不同类型的森林生态系统中分布着不同种类的树生地衣植物。 根据多元分析结果和生境的综合特征,该地区的树生地衣可划分为4种类型: 1) 茎口果粉衣+金黄茶衣群丛Chaenotheca stemonea+Candellaria aurella Association; 2)叉小孢衣+裸扁枝衣+粉唇蜈蚣衣群丛Bryoria furcellata+Evernia esorediosa+Physcia tribacoides Association; 3)亚广开梅衣+槽梅衣+疑小梅衣群丛Parmelia fertilis+Parmelia sulcata+Parmeliopsis ambigua Association; 4)睫毛黑蜈蚣衣+黑蜈蚣衣群丛Phaeophyscia ciliata+Phaeophyscia nigricans Association。其群落多样性指数以亚广开梅衣+槽梅衣+疑小梅衣群丛为最高 (1.920), 叉小孢衣+裸扁枝衣+粉唇蜈蚣衣群丛为最低 (1.562)。  相似文献
