Ocular structures have recently been discovered on the cephalon of an Ordovician agnostid trilobite, Oculagnostus frici (Holub, 1908). They are represented mainly by obvious palpebral lobes situated at the postero-lateral part of the genae. In addition, in one specimen there is a dome-shaped structure below the palpebral lobe. This may well be the remains of an eye, but details of its structure are indeterminate. In the other two cephala to hand there is a notch or cavity beneath the palpebral lobe, indicating that the visual surface may have been encompassed by a circum-ocular suture such that the lentiferous region normally dropped out during ecdysis. The origin of the ocular structures in Oculagnostus frici is briefly discussed. Oculagnostus n. gen. is described.  相似文献

Grazing by a native and an exotic crayfish on aquatic macrophytes   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4  
1. We compared grazing by native noble crayfish ( Astacus astacus ) and the exotic signal crayfish ( Pacifastacus leniusculus ) on seedling or well-established macrophytes.
2. In a pool experiment, seedlings of emergent Scirpus lacustris and floating-leaved Potamogeton natans were heavily grazed by adult signal crayfish, whereas established plants of the same species sustained only minor damage.
3. In a preference experiment two submerged macrophytes ( Chara vulgaris and Elodea canadensis ), and both seedlings and established plants of S. lacustris and P. natans , were presented pairwise to signal and noble crayfish. There was no significant difference in preference by the two crayfish species. Chara vulgaris was preferred to all other plants presented, established plants of S. lacustris and P. natans were never preferred, and seedlings of P. natans were preferred to established P. natans .
4. An aquarium experiment was conducted in which the consumption of Chara by signal and noble crayfish was measured in relation to water temperature. Signal crayfish consumed significantly more Chara than noble crayfish, especially at higher temperatures.
5. Our results indicate that the signal crayfish is the more voracious grazer especially at higher temperatures. There may be negative effects on vegetation (emergents and floating-leaved, as well as submerged species) when the signal crayfish is introduced. Chara species are particularly susceptible, since they are preferred by crayfish and the genus includes a large number of rare species. Stocking of crayfish therefore could lead to the decline or removal of submerged species in order of crayfish feeding preferences and could prevent the spread or cause a decline of emergent and floating-leaved vegetation.  相似文献

Taxon names should be founded on phylogenetic relationships. and the names defined on the basis of common ancestry. Definitions based on evolutionary relationships relate the names to a phylogeny, and while the inclusiveness of the name may change with changing hypotheses of monophyly, the actual name remains unaltered. The limits of the name arc fixed by pointing to a monophyletic clade, where group membership is determined by the relationship to this clade. and not to subjective decisions of taxon delineations. Since phylogenetic definitions unambiguously connect the name to a specified clade, and not to a type, the conventional type concept becomes superfluous. We furthermore consider the Linnean categories poorly suited to convey the information in evolutionary trees, and suggest that these categories are abandoned.  相似文献

1. The impact of changes in submerged macrophyte abundance on fish-zooplankton-phytoplankton interactions was studied in eighteen large-scale (100 m2) enclosures in a shallow eutrophic take. The submerged macrophytes comprised Potamategon pectinatus L., P. pusillus L. and Callitriche hermaphroditica L. while the fish fry stock comprised three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus acuteatus L., and roach, Rutilus rutilus L. 2. In the absence of macrophytes zooplankton biomass was low and dominated by cyclopoid copepods regardless of fish density, while the phytoplankton biovolume was high (up to 38 mm31) and dominated by small pennate diatoms and chlorococcales. When the lake volume infested by submerged macrophytes (PVI) exceeded 15–20% and the fish density was below a catch per unit effort (CPUE) of 10 (approx. 2 fry m?2), planktonic cladoceran biomass was high and dominated by relatively large-sized specimens, while the phytoplankton biovolume was low and dominated by small fast-growing flagellates. At higher fish densities, zooplankton biomass and average biomass of cladocerans decreased and a shift to cyclopoids occurred, while phytoplankton biovolume increased markedly and became dominated by cyanophytes and dinoflagellates. 3. Stepwise multiple linear regressions on log-transformed data revealed that the biomass of Daphnia, Bosmina, Ceriodaphmia and Chydorus were all significantly positively related to PVI and negatively to the abundance of fish or PVI x fish. The average individual biomass of cladocerans was negatively related to fish, but unrelated to PVI. Calculated zooplankton grazing pressure on phytoplankton was positively related to PVI and negatively to PVI x fish. Accordingly the phytoplankton biovolume was negatively related to PVI and to PVI x zooplankton biomass. Cyanophytes and chryptophytes (% of biomass) were positively and Chlorococcales and diatoms negatively related to PVI, while cyanophytes and Chlorococcales were negatively related to PVI x zooplankton biomass. In contrast diatoms and cryptophytes were positively related to the zooplankton biomass or PVI x zooplankton. 4. The results suggest that fish predation has less impact on the zooplankton community in the more structured environment of macrophyte beds, particularly when the PVI exceeds 15–20%. They further suggest that the refuge capacity of macrophytes decreases markedly with increasing fish density (in our study above approximately 10 CPUE). Provided that the density of planktivorous fish is not high, even small improvements in submerged macrophyte abundance may have a substantial positive impact on the zooplankton, leading to a lower phytoplankton biovolume and higher water transparency. However, at high fish densities the refuge effect seems low and no major zooplankton mediated effects of enhanced growth of macrophytes are to be expected.  相似文献

It has previously been shown that α2-adrenoceptors (α2-ARs) mediate pigment granule (melanosome) aggregation in melanophores of the teleost fish Labrus ossifagus. The present investigation scrutinized the signalling mechanisms of melanosome aggregation induced by sympathetic nerve stimulation or by exogenous addition of α-AR agonists and cAMP analogues. The following was observed: i) nerve-induced melanosome aggregation was associated with a rapid decrease in the cAMP level; ii) noradrenaline or medetomidine (an α2-AR agonist) caused melanosome aggregation and reduced the cAMP content; iii) RP-S-CI-cAMP, a membrane-permeating inhibitor of protein kinase A induced melanosome aggregation; and iv) B-HT 920 (an α2-AR agonist) and methoxamine (an α1-AR agonist) induced melanosome aggregation, although they did not reduce cAMP. It has been suggested that in some teleost species α1-ARs mediate melanosome aggregation by increasing the level of intracellular calcium. However, we found that the effect of methoxamine in melanophores from Labrus ossifagus could be blocked by yohimbine (an α2-AR antagonist) but not by equimolar concentration of prazosin (an α1-AR antagonist). Furthermore, 1 μM ionomycin (a calcium ionophore) did not induce melanosome aggregation. Our findings therefore do not indicate that α1-ARs and/or an increase in intracellular calcium mediate melanosome aggregation in Labrus ossifagus. Our results suggest that α2-AR-mediated melanosome aggregation is induced by multiple signalling pathways. One of these involves a reduction in cAMP, but none involves an increase in intracellular calcium.  相似文献

Multiphasic accumulation of nutrients by plants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Seedlings of rice (Oryza sativa), soybean (Glycine max) and sour orange (Citrus aurantium) were grown for 20 to 125 days under controlled conditions in nutrient solutions wiht up to 16 different concentrations of NH4+, H2PO4-, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ or Zn2+. Nutrient concentrations differed by up to 4 orders of magnitude (H2PO4- and Zn2+) and were kept constant or within certain limits by changing solutions daily. Dry weights and concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg or Zn were determined for roots and tops (or roots, stems and leaves). The relationship between tissue concentration of an element and external concentration of the corresponding nutient ion was invariably multiphasic, with phases separated by sharp breaks or jumps. The kinetics of accumulation were similar to those of short-term uptake of the same ions. Reanalysis of previously published data (including data for Mn2+) for other plants yielded, similarly, bi- or multiphasic isotherms for accumulation. Accumulation patterns and growth were in several instances correlated, with separate phases coinciding with regions of poverty adjustment, luxury consumption and toxicity. Implications of multiphasic kinetics of long-term nutrient accumulation for membrane properties, fluxes and regulation include: (i) Membranes and uptake mechanisms must remain relatively constant throughout the life of the plant with respect to affinities for ions and concentrations at which transitions occur. (ii) Rate-limitation occurs at the plasmalemma of the root cortical cells. (iii) Uptake is at all times under multiphasic control by the external solution.  相似文献

We used morphological, vocal and molecular (one mitochondrial and two nuclear loci) data to re-evaluate the taxonomic status of the taxa acanthizoides , concolor , and brunnescens in the Cettia acanthizoides (J. Verreaux, 1871) complex. We conclude that all three are valid taxa, and that acanthizoides of China and concolor of Taiwan are best treated as conspecific, whereas brunnescens of the Himalayas is better considered as a separate species. The degree of morphological, vocal, and genetic differentiation is variably congruent among all taxa; the recently separated acanthizoides and concolor differ slightly in plumage and structure but are indistinguishable in vocalizations, whereas the earlier diverged brunnescens and acanthizoides/concolor differ only slightly more in morphology but to a much greater degree in vocalizations. A new species of Phylloscopus warbler, which we name Phylloscopus calciatilis Limestone Leaf Warbler, is described from central and northern Vietnam and central and northern Laos; it probably also breeds in southernmost China. In morphology, the new species is very similar to Sulphur-breasted Warbler Phylloscopus ricketti , but it is smaller with a proportionately larger bill and rounder wing. Its song and calls are diagnostic. Based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, the new species is most closely related to P. ricketti and Yellow-vented Warbler Phylloscopus cantator , and it is inferred to be sister to the latter. The mitochondrial divergences between these three species are at the low end of the variation found in other species of Phylloscopus and Seicercus warblers, but greater than in other taxa generally treated as subspecies. Possible introgressive hybridization between the new species and P. ricketti is discussed, but more data are needed to establish whether it does occur and, if it does, to what extent. The new species appears to have a restricted breeding range in limestone karst environments, where it is locally common and therefore not under any immediate threat. In view of the recognition of the new species, all previous records of P. ricketti sensu lato need to be re-evaluated.  相似文献

1. Aquatic ecosystems in Northern Europe are expected to face increases in temperature and water colour (TB) in future. While effects of these factors have been studied separately, it is unknown whether and how a combination of them might affect phenological events and trophic interactions. 2. In a mesocosm study, we combined both factors to create conditions expected to arise during the coming century. We focused on quantifying effects on timing and magnitude of plankton spring phenological events and identifying possible mismatches between resources (phytoplankton) and consumers (zooplankton). 3. We found that the increases in TB had important effects on timing and abundance of different plankton groups. While increased temperature led to an earlier peak in phytoplankton and zooplankton and a change in the relative timing of different zooplankton groups, increased water colour reduced chlorophyll‐a concentrations. 4. Increased TB together benefitted cladocerans and calanoid copepods and led to stronger top‐down control of algae by zooplankton. There was no sign of a mismatch between primary producers and grazers as reported from other studies. 5. Our results point towards an earlier onset of plankton spring growth in shallow lakes in future with a stronger top‐down control of phytoplankton by zooplankton grazers.  相似文献
