Antagonistic or mutualistic interactions between insects and fungi are well-known, and the mutualistic interactions of fungus-growing ants, fungus-growing termites, and fungus-gardening beetles with their respective fungal mutualists are model examples of coevolution. However, our understanding of coevolutionary interactions between insects and fungi has been based on a few model systems. Fungal mimicry of termite eggs is one of the most striking evolutionary consequences of insect–fungus associations. This novel termite–fungus interaction is a good model system to compare with the relatively well-studied systems of fungus-growing ants and termites because termite egg-mimicking fungi are protected in the nests of social insects, as are fungi cultivated by fungus-growing ants and termites. Recently, among systems of fungus-growing ants and termites, much attention has been focused on common factors including monoculture system for the ultimate evolutionary stability of mutualism. We examined the genetic diversity of termite egg-mimicking fungi within host termite nests. RFLP analysis demonstrated that termite nests were often infected by multiple strains of termite egg-mimicking fungi, in contrast to single-strain monocultures in fungus combs of fungus-growing ants and termites. Additionally, phylogenetic analyses indicated the existence of a free-living stage of the termite egg-mimicking fungus as well as frequent long-distance gene flow by spores and subsequent horizontal transmission. Comparisons of these results with previous studies of fungus-growing ants and termites suggest that the level of genetic diversity of fungal symbionts within social insect nests may be important in shaping the outcome of the coevolutionary interaction, despite the fact that the mechanism for achieving genetic diversity varies with the evolutionary histories of the component species.

The importance of symbiotic microbes to insects cannot be overstated; however, we have a poor understanding of the evolutionary processes that shape most insect–microbe interactions. Many bark beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) species are involved in what have been described as obligate mutualisms with symbiotic fungi. Beetles benefit through supplementing their nutrient‐poor diet with fungi and the fungi benefit through gaining transportation to resources. However, only a few beetle–fungal symbioses have been experimentally manipulated to test whether the relationship is obligate. Furthermore, none have tested for adaptation of beetles to their specific symbionts, one of the requirements for coevolution. We experimentally manipulated the western pine beetle–fungus symbiosis to determine whether the beetle is obligately dependent upon fungi and to test for fine‐scale adaptation of the beetle to one of its symbiotic fungi, Entomocorticium sp. B. We reared beetles from a single population with either a natal isolate of E. sp. B (isolated from the same population from which the beetles originated), a non‐natal isolate (a genetically divergent isolate from a geographically distant beetle population), or with no fungi. We found that fungi were crucial for the successful development of western pine beetles. We also found no significant difference in the effects of the natal and non‐natal isolate on beetle fitness parameters. However, brood adult beetles failed to incorporate the non‐natal fungus into their fungal transport structure (mycangium) indicating adaption by the beetle to particular genotypes of symbiotic fungi. Our results suggest that beetle–fungus mutualisms and symbiont fidelity may be maintained via an undescribed recognition mechanism of the beetles for particular symbionts that may promote particular associations through time.

Insect-fungus interactions range from agonistic to mutualistic, and include several spectacular examples of complex symbioses.A potential benefit of mycophagy (the ingestion of fungal tissue)is the augmentation of digestive capacity by the ingestion offungal enzymes that remain active in the gut following ingestion.Cellulose digestion is mediated by ingested fungal enzymes inthe wood-boring larvae of cerambycid beetles and siricid woodwasps,in detritus-feeding stonefly nymphs, and in the workers of fungus-growingtermites. In this paper I discuss a plausible scenario for theevolution of stable symbiotic insect-fungus associations, inwhich the augmentation of digestive capacity through the ingestionof fungal enzymes is an important factor leading to the establishmentof interdependence between the interacting partners in a mutualism.Ingested fungal enzymes play a different role in the mutualisticassociation of the attine ants and their symbiotic fungi. Analyses of the associations of the siricid woodwasps, fungus-growingtermites, and fungus-growing ants with their symbiotic fungipermit the testing of Law's (1985) predictions concerning theconsequences of evolution in a mutualistic environment. As predicted, the rate of speciation has been slower in the protected partnerthan in the host partner, selection has favored asexual reproductionin the protected partner, and, at least in the attine ant-fungussymbiosis, the protected partner exhibits a low degree of specificitytoward different host species. Insect-fungus interactions provide rich material for the studyof both mechanistic and theoretical aspects of mutualism.

Ambrosia beetles, dominant wood degraders in the tropics, create tunnels in dead trees and employ gardens of symbiotic fungi to extract nutrients from wood. Specificity of the beetle–fungus relationship has rarely been examined, and simple vertical transmission of a specific fungal cultivar by each beetle species is often assumed in literature. We report repeated evolution of fungal crop stealing, termed mycocleptism, among ambrosia beetles. The mycocleptic species seek brood galleries of other species, and exploit their established fungal gardens by tunneling through the ambient mycelium‐laden wood. Instead of carrying their own fungal sybmbionts, mycocleptae depend on adopting the fungal assemblages of their host species, as shown by an analysis of fungal DNA from beetle galleries. The evidence for widespread horizontal exchange of fungi between beetles challenges the traditional concept of ambrosia fungi as species‐specific symbionts. Fungus stealing appears to be an evolutionarily successful strategy. It evolved independently in several beetle clades, two of which have radiated, and at least one case was accompanied by a loss of the beetles’ fungus‐transporting organs. We demonstrate this using the first robust phylogeny of one of the world's largest group of ambrosia beetles, Xyleborini.

Fungus-growing termites cultivate their mutualistic basidiomycete Termitomyces species on a substrate called a fungal comb. Here, the Suicide Polymerase Endonuclease Restriction (SuPER) method was adapted for the first time to a fungal study to determine the entire fungal community of fungal combs and to test whether fungi other than the symbiotic cultivar interact with termite hosts. Our molecular analyses show that although active combs are dominated by Termitomyces fungi isolated with direct Polymerase Endonuclease Restriction - Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE), they can also harbor some filamentous fungi and yeasts only revealed by SuPER PCR-DGGE. This is the first molecular evidence of the presence of non-Termitomyces species in active combs. However, because there is no evidence for a species-specific relationship between these fungi and termites, they are mere transient guests with no specialization in the symbiosis. It is however surprising to notice that termite-associated Xylaria strains were not isolated from active combs even though they are frequently retrieved when nests are abandoned by termites. This finding highlights the implication of fungus-growing termites in the regulation of fungi occurring within the combs and also suggests that they might not have any particular evolutionary-based association with Xylaria species.

Ambrosia fungi live associated with beetles (Scolytidae and Platypodidae) in host trees and act as a food source for the insects. The symbiotic relation is important to the colonizing strategies of host trees by beetles. Ambrosia fungi are dimorphic: they grow as ambrosial form and as mycelium. The fungi are highly specialized, adapted to a specific beetle and to the biotope where they both live. In addition other fungi have been found such as tree pathogenic fungi that may play a role in insects host colonization success. Saprophytic fungi are also present in insects galleries. These may decompose cellulose and/or be antagonistic to other less beneficial fungi. This paper summarizes the importance of ambrosia fungi and the interaction with insects and hosts. The possibility of the transport of pathogenic fungi by Platypus cylindrus to cork oak thus contributing for its decline is discussed.

International trade and travel are devastating native flora and fauna in many countries through the intentional and/or unintentional introduction of exotic organisms. Pathway control appears to be particularly effective for microscopic organisms such as mites, nematodes, and fungi that are difficult to see with the naked eye. However, taxonomic and ecological information on such organisms is scarce, sometimes causing time lags or failure in eradication programs. Several groups of mites, nematodes, and fungi commonly share a habitat with insects or use them as dispersal agents (phoresy). Some exotic mites and nematodes are introduced simultaneously with exotic insects, sometimes in wood materials. In Japan, mites, nematodes, and fungi have been collected from lucanid beetles introduced as pets from Southeast Asia. While no lethal nematode species have been collected from lucanid beetles, one hemolymph-sucking mite species, inhabiting the sub-elytral space of its native host, is able to easily switch to the Japanese beetle, Dorcus rectus, killing the insect. Yeasts have also been reported on exotic beetles and laboulbeniomycetes have been found on mites associated with the beetles, although their interactions are unknown. Despite the lack of information available about other mites, nematodes, and fungi associated with intentionally and unintentionally introduced forest insects, our analysis of insect species listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature suggests that unintentional introductions of the microscopic organisms are quite common as a consequence of the existence of symbiotic relationships such as phoresy and parasitism.

Most wood-inhabiting fungi are assumed to be dispersed primarily by wind, with the exception of a few species involved in mutualistic relationships with insects. In this study we tested whether several species of wood-inhabiting insects can function as dispersal vectors for non-mutualistic fungi, which would indicate that wood-inhabiting fungi can benefit from targeted animal-mediated dispersal. We sampled wood-inhabiting beetles (Coleoptera) from freshly felled wood experimentally added to forests and used DNA metabarcoding to investigate the fungal DNA carried by these insects. Staphylinid beetles rarely contained fungal DNA, while Endomychus coccineus, Glischrochilus hortensis and Glischrochilus quadripunctatus frequently carried fungal DNA with a composition specific to the insect taxon. A large proportion of the obtained fungal sequences (34%) represented decomposer fungi, including well-known wood-decay fungi such as Fomitopsis pinicola, Fomes fomentarius, Trichaptum abietinum and Trametes versicolor. Scanning electron microscopy further showed that some of the fungal material was carried as spores or yeast cells on the insect exoskeletons. Our results suggest that insect-vectored dispersal is of broader importance to wood-inhabiting fungi than previously assumed.
