We evaluated diet and morphology through ontogeny for a freshwater population of the Mayan cichlid Cichlasoma (Nandopsis) urophthalmus (Günther 1862) in Floridas Big Cypress National Preserve. This species is a generalist predator throughout ontogeny. Fish remained the primary prey item throughout ontogeny, but there was a shift from detritus and ostracods among juveniles to algae, gastropods (snails), decapods, Hymenoptera, and adult Diptera among adults. All morphological variables grew isometrically except total molariform tooth area and pharyngeal jaw mass, which exhibited positive allometry. Despite a moderately robust adult pharyngeal jaw apparatus, this species does not specialize on hard prey at this south Florida site. Compared to its native range in Mexico, fish in Florida have undergone a pronounced niche shift with the diet being dominated by fish and snails, probably due to greater availability. The invasive success of C. urophthalmus does not appear to be related to ontogenetic morphological shifts or dietary specialization. Rather, its successful and rapid colonization of southern Florida might in part be related to its generalized and opportunistic feeding habits and morphology.  相似文献

Short term, replicated experimental alteration of densities of a predatory water mite Piona exigua Viets, inside 0.45–0.475 m3 litre enclosures, revealed little evidence of the effects of predation on the number and relative abundance of the enclosed zooplankton species. Predation rates more closely approximated those estimated from single prey functional response experiments in the second experimental period (December) than in the first (March). In December Daphnia was the only susceptible taxon present in large numbers, whereas in March, Ceriodaphnia and Chydorus were also present. This result is consistent with laboratory findings that predation rates are lowered in the presence of more than one prey type. The difficulty of obtaining evidence for significant effects of these planktonic predators is in part due to changes in the preferred prey species in the diet of Piona depending on stage and sex of the mite and to aspects of experimental design. The wide variability between replicate enclosures at each predator density reduced the power of the statistical analyses used to test the null hypothesis. Enclosures with no predators are necessary to investigate the effects of enclosure on the zooplankton prey, since these effects may outweigh those due to predator consumption.  相似文献

Three new major, race-specific, resistance genes to powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei) were identified in three barley lines, RS42-6*O, RS137-28*E, and HSY-78*A, derived from crosses with wild barley (Hordeum vulgare ssp. spontaneum). The resistance gene origining from wild barley in line RS42-6*O, showed a recessive mode of inheritance, whereas the other wild barley genes were (semi)-dominant. RFLP mapping of these three genes was performed in segregating F2 populations. The recessive gene in line RS42-6*O, was localized on barley chromosome 1S (7HS), while the (semi)-dominant genes in lines RS137-28*E, and HSY-78*A, were localized on chromosomes 1L (7HL) and 7L (5HL), respectively. Closely linked RFLP clones mapped at distances between 2.6cM and 5.3 cM. Hitherto, specific loci for powdery mildew resistance in barley had not been located on these chromosomes. Furthermore, tests for linkage to the unlocalized resistance gene Mlp revealed free segregation. Therefore, these genes represent new loci and new designations are suggested: mlt (RS42-6*O), Mlf (RS137-28*E), and Mlj (HSY-78*A). Comparisons with mapped QTLs for mildew resistance were made and are discussed in the context of homoeology among the genomes of barley (H-vulgare), wheat (Triticum aestivum), and rye (Secale cereale). Duplications of RFLP bands detected in the neighbourhood of Mlf and mlt might indicate an evolutionary interrelationship to the Mla locus for mildew resistance.  相似文献

Summary An approximately constant ratio of number of predator species/number of prey species is observed in several natural communities, although the exact value of the ratio may vary with habitat and the types of organisms in the food web. We test the hypothesis that a constant predator/prey ratio can be generated by what Holt (1977) terms apparent competition and what Jeffries and Lawton (1984) call competition for enemy-free space. We create simple, two trophic-level communities by drawing species of predators and prey at random from a species pool, simulating their interactions using Lotka-Volterra models. The simulated food webs converge over successive periods of invasion and extinction to locally stable systems with approximately constant ratios of number of predator species/number of prey species, despite varying initial conditions. As expected, predator/prey ratios take different values depending upon the biology of the simulated species. We conclude that apparent competition between prey species via shared enemies may be one mechanism whereby approximately constant predator/prey ratios are generated in natural communities.  相似文献

Summary The ability of a piscivorous bird, the western reef heron,Egretta gularis schistacea, to cope with light refraction at the air/water interface was investigated. The heron's capture rate of small stationary underwater prey from a variety of angles was high, indicating an ability to correct for refraction. Two distinct phases were described during head movement: i) Pre-strike (mean path angle 60° to the vertical, mean velocity 52 cm/s). ii) Strike (mean path angle 33°, mean velocity 270 cm/s). When prey was unsubmerged the two phases were less distinct (pre-strike 47°, 62 cm/s; strike 42°, 154 cm/s). The point of change between phases (STR) was assumed to be the point at which corrections for refraction were performed. Calculated disparities between real and apparent prey positions at STR may reach 10 cm. At STR, highly significant correlations were found between i) the heron's eye height above the water, and prey depth, ii) the apparent prey depth and real prey depth. A model is presented to explain the heron's manner of correcting for light refraction.Abbreviation STR point of strike  相似文献

Synopsis Swimming speed and swimming path of goldfish and tetra larvae were studied in aquaria containing food patches composed of decapsulated cysts and immobilized nauplii of Artemia salina or sparsely distributed prey. The mean swimming speed of starved larvae in the medium without food was about four times higher than the speed of larvae feeding in a patch. Satiated larvae swam about 1.5 times slower than hungry fish. Consumption of single prey items by starved larvae caused the following sequence of swimming responses: handling pause (cessation of swimming), slow swimming in a restricted area, and fast swimming (approximately twice as fast as hungry larvae before encountering food) accompanied by a widening of the area searched (area increased searching). Mean swimming speed was constant over a broad range (101–103 ind·1–1 of food density, although at extreme (high or low) values of food density it depended on swimming responses of the predator. Frequency of visits to the different parts of the aquarium strongly depended on encounters of hungry fish with food particles or patches.  相似文献

Laboratory studies on predation, reproduction and development were conducted on three phytoseiid species,Typhlodromus pomi (Parrott),Phytoseius macropilis (Banks) andAmblyseius finlandicus (Oudemans). These species were dominant phytoseiid mites on the abandoned apple trees with which ecological experiments were carried out in southern Ontario, Canada. Throught the studies, a rust mite species (Diptacus gigantorhynchus sp. complex), a single consistent prey in the orchard, was used as food. Results showed that the three predators developed well with the rust mites as food, and thatA. finlandicus developed most rapidly and had the highest predation rate. However, this species showed a poor tolerance to low prey densities. These observations suggest that this species is a predacious species and the other two species were more or less general feeders. All species showed the same pre-mating behaviour (Amblyseius-Typhlodromus type), but they exhibited a variety of mating and oviposition behaviours.  相似文献

Summary Spiders have been shown to be important predators on ant populations, although ant mortality may be low. Western widow spider (Latrodectus hesperus) predation on Pogonomyrmex rugosus ant nests is slight, less than 0.2% of the nest population per day. Yet, the ants respond by halting foraging temporarily and may even close the nest entrace with pebbles. If spiders are removed from such nests, the ants become active within 24 h and within five days foraging activity reaches higher levels than at any previous time of the year.Ants have at least four responses to spiders predation: 1) Moving the nest entrace; 2) posting of guards; 3) attacking the spiders; 4) halting foraging. Pogonomyrmex rugosus practices the fourth response, although it results in losses of food intake into the nest. This is apparently the only option available. If the ants continue to forage, the spider density may increase, resulting in heavy mortality of the ants.  相似文献

Summary Changes in the diet of dingoes (Canis familiaris dingo) in response to measured fluctuations of prey populations were followed over 7 years. The study began after great rains had broken a long drought. Eruptions of rodents and rabbits followed, but some prey were always either relatively abundant (live cattle) or scarce (red kangaroo, lizards, birds). Cattle carcasses were increasingly available during a subsequent drought. Small and medium-sized prey, rodents (26%), lizards (12%) and rabbits (56%) were preferred, probably because they were easily caught. Only rabbits were caten consistently regardless of density. By contrast, large prey were eaten in relatively large amounts only during drought, with initial emphasis on red kangaroos (15% overall) and then cattle (17%) mostly as carcasses. The diet was functionally related to the respective abundances of all major prey species, but the relationship shifted during drought when predation on low populations was most severe. There was evidence that growth of resurging prey populations were suppressed by predation. Diets of dingoes did not differ significantly with age or sex. An hypothesis of alternation of predation is presented: dingoes feed sequentially on prey of increasing size (rodents, rabbits, red kangaroos, cattle) in response to rainy periods and subsequent droughts, meanwhile always concentrating on the staple prey (rabbits). The fluctuating abundances of small and medium-sized prey determined not only their own relative availabilities but also that of large prey, and hence determined the diet of the dingo at any time. Prey availability (catchability, accessability) appeared to be more important than prey abundance (numbers, biomass), and the dingo's flexible social organisation allowed versatility in hunting strategies and defence of resources. We conclude that dingoes do not always forage most efficiently as optimal foraging models predict because of the constraints imposed by the capricious environment in arid Australis, where prey availability fluctuates greatly and becomes limited and clumped in drought, so that dingoes may be faced with outright starvation. Instead we conclude that dingoes utilise a conservative feeding strategy and adopt any behaviour which provides at least a threshold quantity of energy or nutrient as part of a trade-off with other competing ecological requirements.  相似文献

The –174G C polymorphism of the interleukin 6 (IL-6) gene promoter and the –308G A polymorphism of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) gene promoter were tested for association with multiple myeloma (MM) varying in severity. Of 69 patients, 19 had aggressive MM, 26 had benign MM, and 24 had unidentified MM. The control group (N = 102) matched the test group in age and sex composition. The two groups did not significantly differ in allele and genotype frequencies of the IL-6 and TNF genes. Genotype CC, which determines low-level expression of IL-6, occurred at a frequency of 0.35 in patients with low-progressing MM and was absent from patients with aggressive MM. The TNF gene showed no association with predisposition to MM or clinical variant of the disease. As for MM progression, genotype CC of the IL-6 gene was associated with milder clinical signs in patients from Bashkortostan.  相似文献

The carnivorous mosquito Lutzia (= Culex) raptor devours 20 to 50 larvae (third instar) of Culex fatigans in a day. The predatory capacity of L. raptor is not influenced by changes in volume of water, but significantly influenced by changes in prey density. With increasing prey density, the percentage of prey killed and left unconsumed increases. The duration required to subdue and consume a single larva is 15 min for L. raptor previously deprived of food for 3 to 24 hrs; the handling duration of prey increases to 20 min for the predator previously deprived food for 1 hr. The duration increases with increasing prey size; L. raptor requires 1, 6, 62 or 113 min to handle a single II, III, IV or mini pupa of Culex fatigans weighing 0.2,1.2,4.2 and 4.0 mg respectively.  相似文献

I investigated the diet and feeding ecology of two social groups of woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagotricha poeppigii) in Yasuní National Park, Ecuador between April 1995 and March 1996. Woolly monkeys in Yasuní were predominantly frugivorous, with fruits comprising ca. 77% of the yearly diet; the next most common food type in the diet was insect and other animal prey. The fruit diet of woolly monkeys in Yasuní is the most diverse yet recorded for any ateline primate, including spider monkeys (Ateles), which are often regarded as ripe fruit specialists: 208 distinct morphospecies of fruits were consumed by woolly monkeys either during the study or during several preceding months of pilot work. Nonetheless, close to one-third of the yearly diet came from just 3 plant genera—Inga, Ficus, and Spondias—and only 20 genera each contributed to 1% of the diet. For one study group, the proportion of ripe fruit in the diet each month was correlated with the habitat-wide availability of this resource, a pattern evidenced by several other ateline species. However, the relationship was not apparent in the second study group. The modal party size for feeding bouts on all food types was a single monkey, and, contrary to reports for other atelines, neither feeding party size nor the total number of feeding minutes that groups spent in food patches was well predicted by patch size. Both results highlight the independent nature of woolly monkey foraging. Given that woolly monkeys and closely-related spider monkeys focus so heavily on ripe fruits, their very different patterns of social organization are intriguing and raise the question of just how their ecological strategies differ. Two important differences appear to be in the use of animal prey and in the phytochemical composition of the ripe fruits that they consume: spider monkeys rarely forage for animal prey, and woolly monkeys seldom consume the lipid-rich fruits that are an important part of spider monkey diets.  相似文献

Generalists, i.e. those species which consume a wide variety of foods, including some of plant origin such as pollen, are the dominant members of the phytoseiid mite fauna in some perennial crops. Biological attributes commonly evident in generalist in contrast to specialist phytoseiids include a lower reproductive potential on mite prey, close association with certain plant species, population increases in the absence of mite prey, and intraplant distribution unrelated to that of spider mites. Some studies are reviewed that suggest the ability of certain generalist phytoseiids to maintain tetranychid populations at low densities. Possible biological factors influencing the establishment of exotic generalist phytoseiids are considered. Some of the attributes usually considered important in effective phytoseiid predators may be of minor importance in more stable situations at low population densities.  相似文献

Summary In this study of interactions between larval damselflies (Zygoptera: Coenagrionidae) and pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) we focus on the behaviour of the damselfly prey. First we document a prey behaviour in which damselflies use plant stems or leaves to hide from pumpkinseeds. We then test two hypotheses: (1) that damselfly hiding is a specific antipredator behaviour and (2) that hiding occurs more frequently in plant habitats where damselflies experience greater risk of predation. Since plant species growth forms can influence predation risk, our second hypothesis implies that hiding behaviour is conditional upon the type of vegetation providing habitat structure. Conditional expression of antipredator behaviour according to vegetation type may be important in littoral environments, since predator-prey interactions can occur in habitats with a wide range of macrophyte growth forms. The first hypothesis was supported by our findings that damselfly hiding increased in frequency in the presence of pumpkinseeds, that it was related to the frequency of predator approaches, and that its use reduced damselfly predation risk in high risk habitats. The second hypothesis was supported by our results that damselfly hiding rates were greater in the high risk Scirpus habitats than in the lower risk Potamogeton habitats. These results indicate that prey behaviour can influence predator-prey interactions, and that variation in plant growth form can influence prey behaviour, thus contributing to the impact of habitat structure on predator-prey dynamics.  相似文献

Predators may regulate prey populations if predation rate increases with prey density. Alternatively, if space-limited (e.g. territorial) predators become satiated when prey exceed a certain density, increased prey abundance may lead to reduced predation rate. These alternatives have been difficult to test experimentally for mobile prey in the wild. We present such a test, manipulating the density of great tits (Parus major) by adding nest boxes in territories of sparrowhawks (Accipiter nisus). Predation rate was measured for young tits after they left the nests. Although the great tit is an important prey, there was no evidence for regulation during the breeding season: the rate of hawk predation declined with increasing density of tits. This result was not confounded by changes in breeding density of alternative prey species (other songbirds). Hawk predation can therefore favour dense breeding in a territorial (solitary) bird, and conspecific attraction and aggregation reported in several territorial species may partly result from predation pressure. This result also has potential implications for conservation work.  相似文献

A series of laboratory experiments investigated the diet and feeding behaviour of Phagocata vitta (Dugès). Its fundamental food niche comprises oligochaetes and chironomid larvae, in order of importance. Other arthropod groups, when wounded, are also eaten.Increasing prey density resulted in the ingestion rate increasing in a type 2 functional response curve, sensu Holling. Group feeding by triclads did not widen the food niche but did result in small triclads being more successful in obtaining a meal. When a range of size classes of prey were offered to various size classes of triclad, small triclads were found to take mainly small prey, whilst other sizes would take prey sizes in proportion to their presence in the mixture.Mucous traps do not appear to have an important role in the feeding biology of the triclad.  相似文献

Synopsis The influence of habitat on the size distribution of groupers was examined at sites in the middle and upper Florida Keys. Transects were used to quantify the size distribution of groupers at study sites. There were significant differences in the size distribution of groupers within and among reef community types related to differences in species composition and patch reef size. Groupers with a giant life-history style (Sullivan & de Garine 1994) were more abundant, but smaller, on inshore patch reefs than offshore reef community types. However, grouper species with a dwarf life-history style (Sullivan & de Garine 1994) showed an opposite pattern with a lower abundance, but larger size, inshore than offshore. The length category of groupers constituting the majority of individuals observed on patch reefs was inversely related to reef size. Graysby Epinephelus cruentatus were shown to recruit to deeper (15–20 m), low-relief habitats offshore. Several factors influenced the size distribution of groupers in the study sites including habitat type, spear-fishing, competition, predation, and recruitment.  相似文献

Summary The inheritance of resistance to brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stol.), of 20 rice cultivars was studied. Single dominant genes that are allelic to Bph 3 condition the resistance in cultivars Ptb 19, Gangala (Acc. 7733), Gangala (Acc. 15207), Horana Mawee, Kuruhondarwala, Mudu Kiriyal and Muthumanikam. Single recessive genes that are allelic to bph 4 govern the resistance in cultivars Gambada Samba, Heenhoranamawee, Hotel Samba, Kahata Samba, Kalukuruwee, Lekam Samba, Senawee, Sulai, Thirissa and Vellai Illankali. The resistance in Ptb 33, Sudu Hondarwala, and Sinna Sivappu is governed by one dominant and one recessive gene which segregate independently of each other. The dominant resistance genes in these cultivars appear allelic to either Bph 1 or Bph 3. Similarly, the recessive genes in these cultivars seem allelic to either bph 2 or bph 4. Further investigations are needed to conclusively determine the allelic relationships of resistance genes in Ptb 33, Sudu Hondarwala and Sinna Sivappu.  相似文献

Summary The hypothesis that carnivores can significantly suppress prey populations after they collapse during drought was tested by predator-removal experiments. Low populations of rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) responded with significantly accelerated growth where foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and feral cats (Felis catus) were continually shot. Experiments in years of good pasture and poor were confirmatory. After only 14 months, the rabbits were well on their way to another eruption whereas untreated populations had remained low for 2.5 yrs until a second drought. These studies confirm the impact of carnivores found for low populations of cyclical prey but there was no measurable effect of predator-removal on the population declines in our studies. They were due to aridity and poor pastures. The concept of Environmentally Modulated Predation is presented. Only after the intervention of a widespread environmental event is such limiting predation possible. Drought is also the cause in arid Australia for dingoes (Canis familiaris dingo) preying seqenntially on rodents, rabbits and red kangaroos, while wildfire was the cause in temperate forests. Such environmental intervention may be more widespread than usually considered, triggering some apparent predator-prey cycles. The major factors limiting rabbits in inland Australia are: adequacy of green herbage during breeding, food scarcity during average summers, critical shortages of food and its low quality (including moisture content) during crashes in drought, followed by limiting predation. Contrasting life-histories are one cause for the ultimate escape of rabbit populations from limiting predation as rabbits can breed continuously but carnivores seasonally only. Patchy predation and alternate prey may also play a part.  相似文献

The biology of female Epiplatys bifasciatus (Steindachner, 1881) from the Sudd region of southern Sudan was investigated. The population was dominated by females whose growth in body dimensions relative to total length was found to be linear. The reproductive system differs from that of oviparous teleosts in having a portion of the ovary (anterior) modified for carrying the developing brood. Gradual development of oocytes towards the nursing portion of the ovary, and low absolute fecundity of the brood, suggests a rather long breeding season (June to September).A large variety of food organisms belonging to three main groups, viz. insects, crustaceans and arachnids, were taken by Epiplatys collected from the littoral zones of two rivers, the Bahr El Ghazal and the White Nile. Little variation occurred in the food of these two populations. Chironomid larvae showed the highest occurrence frequency in the fish food for both localities, and insects in general constituted over 80% of all organisms eaten.  相似文献
