Summary Rye -Amy1, -Amy2, and -Amy3 genes were studied in the cross between inbred lines using wheat -amylase cDNA probes. The -Amy1 and -Amy2 probes uncovered considerable restriction fragment length polymorphism, whereas the -Amy3 region was much more conserved. The numbers of restriction fragments found and the F2 segregation data suggest that there are three -Amy1 genes, two or three -Amy2 genes, and three -Amy3 genes in rye. These conclusions were supported by a simultaneous study of -amylase isozyme polymorphism. The F2 data showed the three individual -Amy1 genes to span a distance of 3cM at the locus on chromosome 6RL. The genes were mapped relative to other RFLP markers on 6RL. On chromosome 7RL two -Amy2 genes were shown to be separated by 5 cM. Linkage data within -Amy3 on 5RL were not obtained since RFLP could be detected at only one of the genes.  相似文献

Summary An experimental manipulation of clutch size was carried out on a wild population of the cooperatively breeding Bell Miner (Manorina melanophrys, Meliphagidae) to assess which factor(s) limit clutch size in this species. Results provide some support for the trade-off hypothesis since there is a cost of reproduction for the breeding female in terms of loss of body mass. The breeding female performs most of the nestling care. Clutches of three eggs are also laid during the mid-breeding season which is the period most favourable for breeding (i.e. nestlings grow faster). This evidence also supports the intrabrood competition hypothesis. Clutches that have lost an egg were more likely to be deserted; this may be an antipredator strategy since partial clutch predation has been recorded in the field. Nest predation was high in this study (64.9%), suggesting that many small clutches may be a strategy to decrease the effect of nest predation on reproductive success over the whole breeding season (nest predation hypothesis). Both the trade-off hypothesis and the nest predation hypothesis may apply in this case since they are not mutually exclusive. The size of the attending group did not greatly affect reproductive success in the short term, although if both age structure and size of the group are taken into account, reproductive success can be better predicted.  相似文献

Summary Two prey populations that share a common predator can interact indirectly by causing changes in the predator's foraging behaviour. Previous work suggests that adaptive choice of prey by the predator usually has two related consequences: (i) the predation rate on a particular prey species increases with the relative and/or absolute abundance of that prey; and (ii) increases in either prey population produce a short-term increase in the fitness of the other prey (short-term indirect mutualism between prey). This paper investigates how these two consequences are changed if the prey exhibit adaptive anti-predator behaviour. In this case, the predation rate on a particular prey often decreases as the prey's density increases. The predator then usually exhibits negative switching between prey. However, the presence of adaptive antipredator behaviour does not change the short-term mutualism between prey. In this case, as a prey becomes less common, it achieves a larger growth rate by reducing its anti-predator effort. These results imply that observations of the relationship between prey density and predation rate cannot be used to infer the nature of the behavioural indirect effect between prey that share a predator.  相似文献

We measured maximum shell diameters and thicknesses of Nerita funiculata Menke and N. scabricosta Lamarck (Gastropoda: Neritidae), and claw sizes and carapace widths of the predatory crab Eriphia squamata Stimpson (Brachyura: Xanthidae), from the Gulf of California (Eastern Pacific). We also tested the ability of E. squamata to crush Nerita shells of various sizes. We compared this data on predator-prey counteradaptations with previously published data for congeneric species from the Western Atlantic and Indo-West Pacific regions. In relative abilities of the crabs to crush gastropod shells, and of the gastropod shells to resist such crushing, the Eastern Pacific species were stronger than their counterparts in the Western Atlantic, but weaker than their Indo-West Pacific congeners, indicative of an intermediate level of faunal dominance or predator-prey arms race escalation.  相似文献

Population fluctuations in a continuous predator-prey system consisting of the spider mite,Tetranychus urticae Koch and its predator,Typhlodromus occidentalis Nesbitt, were assessed for almost 2 years (ca. 50 prey generations), on six mini-orchards of young apple trees in a climatically controlled glasshouse. During the first half of the experiment the plants were either connected to each other with dowel rods or unconnected and separate. In the second half, the plants were all connected. Population densities of both prey and predator on the unconnected mini-orchards were always higher than on the connected ones. Within the mini-orchards (=local scale), prey and predator populations go through a pattern of large amplitude cycles which continued throughout the experimental period. At the regional scale (mean over all mini-orchards) two types of fluctuations were observed. Large amplitude fluctuations associated with synchrony of the local cycles and small amplitude fluctuations associated with periods when local population cycles are proceeding out of phase. Transition from synchronous to asynchronous cycles took place very fast (within a few weeks), suggesting a mechanism generating asynchrony and possibly also partial refuges, which in turn trigger stabilising mechanisms at a regional scale. Causes of the synchrony are unclear. They may relate to the application of a pesticide (pirimicarb) used to control aphids, but there may just as well be an indirect form of causation, e.g. whereby the factors that promote aphid outbreaks also promote spider-mite population growth and temporary escape from control by the predators. Despite the synchronising factors the predator-prey system persisted, without external inputs, at a fairly small spatial scale, the size of a small glasshouse. Assessing the spatial scale and heterogeneity whereby decoupling of local cycles is sufficient for the cycles to proceed out of phase, remains an important area of experimental research. The experiment reported here provides some first clues and may form a standard for forthcoming experiments to assess the mechanisms promoting asynchrony, persistence and possibly also stability.  相似文献

Predators may regulate prey populations if predation rate increases with prey density. Alternatively, if space-limited (e.g. territorial) predators become satiated when prey exceed a certain density, increased prey abundance may lead to reduced predation rate. These alternatives have been difficult to test experimentally for mobile prey in the wild. We present such a test, manipulating the density of great tits (Parus major) by adding nest boxes in territories of sparrowhawks (Accipiter nisus). Predation rate was measured for young tits after they left the nests. Although the great tit is an important prey, there was no evidence for regulation during the breeding season: the rate of hawk predation declined with increasing density of tits. This result was not confounded by changes in breeding density of alternative prey species (other songbirds). Hawk predation can therefore favour dense breeding in a territorial (solitary) bird, and conspecific attraction and aggregation reported in several territorial species may partly result from predation pressure. This result also has potential implications for conservation work.  相似文献

Synopsis An alternative to the reef fish lottery model is proposed for explaining instances of coexistence of reef fishes without apparent spatial resource partitioning. This model is termed money-in-the-bank because of a financial analogy used to explain it. It stresses the importance of habitats that can support only one of two or more closely related species that coexist elsewhere. Populations living in such monospecific habitats could, according to the model, produce enough larvae to repopulate these habitats plus an excess that may settle in the multispecific habitats. Selectivity coefficients (W) and predation rates on Lake Michigan zooplankton were determined forMysis relicta during spring through fall using anin situ method. W values indicated the following ranked order of prey preference: Cladocera > copepod copepodites and copepod nauplii > adult diaptomids and cyclopoids. With few exceptions, W values for different prey categories remained fairly constant despite greatly changing relative abundances of prey. Predation rates and prey selectivity were similar in most cases to those determined in laboratory studies. Ingestion rates (percent dry body weight · day–1) were correlated to total prey biomass (r = 0.38) and to effective prey biomass (r = 0.85), where the weighting factors were overall mean selectivity coefficients for the different prey categories. This result suggested that seasonally varying composition of prey caused much of the variation in ingestion rates among experiments. Summary Numerous studies have demonstrated a negative relationship between increasing habitat complexity and predator foraging success. Results from many of these studies suggest a non-linear relationship, and it has been hypothesised that some threshold level of complexity is required before foraging success is reduced significantly. We examined this hypothesis using largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) foraging on juvenile bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) in various densities of artificial vegetation. Largemouth foraging success differed significantly among the densities of vegetation tested. Regression analysis revealed a non-linear relationship between increasing plant stem density and predator foraging success. Logistic analysis demonstrated a significant fit of our data to a logistic model, from which was calculated the threshold level of plant stem desity necessary to reduce predator foraging success. Studies with various prey species have shown selection by prey for more complex habitats as a refuge from predation. In this stydy, we also examined the effects of increasing habitat complexity (i.e. plant stem density) on choice of habitat by juvenile bluegills while avoiding predation. Plant stem density significantly effected choice of habitat as a refuge. The relationship between increasing habitat complexity and prey choice of habitat was found to be positive and non-linear. As with predator foraging success, logistic analysis demonstrated a significant fit of our data to a logistic model. Using this model we calculated the threshold level of habitat complexity required before prey select a habitat as a refuge. This density of vegetation proved to be considerably higher than that necessary to significantly reduce predator foraging success, indicating that bluegill select habitats safe from predation.Implications of these results and various factors which may affect the relationships described are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Temperature dependence of the rate constant of irreversible thermal inactivation, kin, of immobilized -chymotrypsin depends markedly on the number of covalent bonds between the enzyme and support. When the number of bonds is big enough (thirteen), the dependence is linear as presented in Arrhenius plot (log kin versus reciprocal temperature). However, if the number of such bonds is moderate or small (six or two), the temperature dependence of kin, has a pronounced zig-zag character. This difference in the inactivation behaviour is attributed to an ability of moderately or mildly attached -chymotrypsins to accomplish a transition into a less ordered, catalytically inactive conformation and to inability of rigidly bound enzyme to pass such a transition. Chaotropic salts additionally stabilize this loose conformation of mildly or moderately bound -chymotrypsins against irreversible thermal inactivation but are without effect on the stability of rigidly bound enzyme.  相似文献

Interploid sexual hybridizations were completed in 2001 and 2002 between seven lemon (Citrus limon(L.) Burm. f.) varieties, Key lime (C. aurantifolia (Cristm.) Swing), Palestine sweet lime (C. imettioides Tan.), Lakeland limequat (C. aurantifolia x Fortunella japonica (Thumb.) Swing.), and Etrog citron (C. medica L.) as diploid progenitors and four allotetraploid somatic hybrids (Key lime + Valencia orange, Hamlin orange + Femminello lemon, Valencia orange + Rough lemon, and Valencia orange+ Femminello lemon) in efforts to generate improved seedless triploid acid fruit hybrids. Efficient recovery of triploid progeny from such crosses requires embryo rescue to avoid embryo abortion due to endosperm failure. Germination of rescued genetically diverse immature embryos was induced on two culture media (EME and Gamborgs B5), with two sucrose concentrations (50 or 70 g l–1). All media contained 0.5 g l–1 malt extract and 4.50 M GA3. Germination of globular, heart and torpedo shaped embryos (defined as small embryos) was significantly (p < 0.05) affected by medium and genotype. Gamborgs medium induced 82.89% germination. Of germinated embryos, 11–65% developed into normal plants with differences among crosses. Cotyledonary embryos (defined as immature embryos with fully developed cotyledons) germinated and developed into normal plants at higher rates than less-developed embryos. In efforts to improve the efficiency of plant recovery, small embryos from Todo el año × HF and Lisbon × HF crosses conducted during 2002 were rescued and cultured on three media (MS, Gamborgs, and RMA) for comparison. Media did not significantly affect the proportion of normal plant recovery.  相似文献

Four new Proteus O-specific polysaccharides were isolated by mild acid degradation from the lipopolysaccharides of P. penneri 28 (1), P. vulgaris O44 (2), P. mirabilis G1 (O3) (3), and P. myxofaciens (4), and their structures were elucidated using NMR spectroscopy and chemical methods. They were found to contain non-carbohydrate organic acids, including ether-linked lactic acid and amide-linked amino acids, and the following structures of the repeating units were established: 3)--L-QuipNAc-(13)--D-GlcpNAc-(16)--D-GlcpNAc-(1 (S)-Lac-(2–3) (1) 4)--D-GlcpA-(13)--D-GalpNAc-(14)--D-Glcp-(13)--D-Galp-(14)--D-GalpNAc-(1 L-Ala-(2–6) (2) 3)--D-GalpNAc-(16)--D-GalpNAc-(14)--D-GlcpA-(1 L-Lys-(2–6)--D-GalpA-(14) (3) 4)--D-GlcpA-(16)--D-GalpNAc-(16)--D-GlcpNAc-(13)--D-GlcpNAc-(1 (R)-aLys-(2–6) (4) where (S)-Lac and (R)-aLys stand for (S)-1-carboxyethyl (residue of lactic acid) and N-[(R)-1-carboxyethyl]-L-lysine (alaninolysine), respectively. The data obtained in this work and earlier serve as the chemical basis for classification of the bacteria Proteus.  相似文献

Maximum inhibition of Glycine max, cv. Essex seed germination occurred at 10 g/ml following 72 hr imbibition in constant light. Seeds imbided 108 hr in constant darkness at this concentration showed a 20% rise in germination over that of the control. Imbibition of G. max, cv. Williams seeds in either light or dark for 96 hr did not suppress germination. Imbibition of Essex seeds in either light or dark at 2.5 through 10 g/ml stimulated root elongation except for 10 g/ml at 96 hr (light). Maximum inhibition of Williams root elongation under constant light was at 48 and 72 hr with 10 g/ml. Statistically significant differences in cotyledon, leaf and stem lengths between non-treated (NT) and treated (T) seedlings were not found except for Williams stem length at 2.5 / ml. Root elongation was stimulated 1.2- and 1.1-folds, respectively, at 5.0 (Essex) and 2.5 (Williams) g/ml. Toxin at 2.5 through 10.0 g/ml did not markedly alter either cotyledon or leaf widths with the exception of Williams leaf width at 2.5 g/ml. Medium supplementation with 2.5 through 10.0 g/ml resulted in cotyledon, leaf and root weight enhancements for Essex seedlings. Stem weight was not markedly affected. An 18% rise in Williams cotyledon weight above that of the control was seen at 2.5 g/ml. Williams leaf weights were increased 1.75- and 1.25-folds, respectively, at 2.5 and 10.0 g/ml. Aflatoxin B1, at 2.5 g/ml promoted Williams stem and root elongation 1.20- and 1.09-folds, respectively. Most of the radioactivity from 65Zn-ZnCl2 recovered within organs was found within Essex roots for both T and NT seedlings. A higher amount of radioactivity was recovered within roots at each toxin concentration than was without toxin. However, this was not statistically significant. Significant differences in the distribution of radioactivity within roots between NT and T Williams seedlings were not observed. Generally, AFB1 failed to affect significantly these two varieties of soybeans based on the tests relating to germination, growth and radiolabel uptake.  相似文献

The preparation of benzyl 2,3,6,2,6-penta-O-benzyl--d-lactoside, which is a key intermediate for chemical synthesis of oligosaccharide components of glycosphingolipids, was achieved by an improved method. The 3-O-p-methoxybenzyl and 3-O-methyl derivatives were prepared from benzyl 2,3,6,2,6-penta-O-benzyl--d-lactoside through stannylation. By using benzyl -d-lactoside as starting material, benzyl 3-O-methyl-, 3-O-benzyl- and 3-O-p-methoxybenzyl--d-lactoside were regioselectively synthesized using the same procedure.  相似文献

Synopsis Four wild populations of Oreochromis mossambicus were investigated to examine the effects of environmental factors on reproductive biology in contrasting habitats. Age at maturity, spawning-season length, spawning frequency, clutch size and nesting behaviour were influenced by the prevailing conditions for feeding, breeding and refuge. Even under a temperature regime that approached lethal limits during winter, and erratically fluctuating water levels, O. mossambicus demonstrated an ability to adopt a precocial life-history style in some habitats. In more hostile water bodies an increasingly altricial style was followed.  相似文献

This paper compared the behavior of a diverse set of wheat genotypes in their tissue culture response. Significant differences were detected in plant regeneration, culture efficiency, and regeneration capacity when mature embryos of 47 wheat cultivars, breeding lines, and the common wheat progenitors, Triticum monococcum, T.tauschii, and Aegilops speltoides were compared. Although not currently used in wheat tissue culture, mature embryo-derived callus of cv. Zak (SWS), Scarlet (HRS), Tara (SWS), Jagger (HRW), UC 1036 (HRS), and Kyle durum showed better or comparable plant regeneration than commonly cultured cultivars Fielder and Bobwhite. Of the three diploid wheat progenitors tested, Ae. speltoides regenerated the most plants. In one replicated experiment, callus induction was correlated with culture efficiency (r = 0.42; p = 0.002) and regeneration capacity (r = 0.39; p = 0.002), and in a second larger screen, callus induction correlated with the total number of plants regenerated (r = 0.6; p = 0.001. Immature and mature embryos of Bobwhite and Crocus were compared for callus induction and plant regeneration. Immature embryos were superior explants in terms of plant regeneration. However, sufficient numbers of plants can be regenerated from mature embryos saving on growth facility resources and time required for the collection of immature embryos.  相似文献

Summary In this first article on the carotenoids of Myxobacterales we report on the minor carotenoids of Stigmatella aurantiaca: phytoene, phytofluene, lycopene, -carotene, 4-keto--carotene, 1,2-dihydro-1-hydroxy--carotene, 4-keto-1,2-dihydro-1-hydroxy--carotene, 4-keto-1,2-dihydro-1-hydroxy-torulene, and 1,2,1,2-tetrahydro-1,1-dihydroxy-lycopene. Loss of foraging opportunities and intraspecific competition for prey may be important costs of using refuges, because a hiding animal is unable to use or defend its foraging area from conspecific intrusions. Thus, animals should balance antipredator demands with other requirements in deciding when to come out from a refuge after a predators unsuccessful attack. Observations on foraging and social interactions of backswimmers Notonecta maculata suggest that foraging may be costly in terms of intraspecific agonistic interactions. When prey density is low, increasing the probability of finding a prey may require active exploration of a larger area, but this also increases the probability of encountering a competitor. After simulated exposure to predators, unfed bugs resumed feeding positions after a significantly shorter hiding period than recently fed bugs. We hypothesized that hiding time may also be reduced by recent interactions with conspecific competitors, due to an increased perceived need to defend feeding opportunities. Thus, when a predator attack occurred immediately after an agonistic conspecific interaction, backswimmers resumed feeding positions more quickly, and closer to the original position from which they were disturbed, suggesting short-term defense of particular positions. We conclude that when foraging, backswimmers balance the benefits of finding prey with the costs of predation risk and social interference in deciding their foraging strategy.Communicated by P.K. Summary The expression of the extra-sexcomb phenotype is enhanced in males that are doubly heterozygous for mutants from two non-allelic loci,extra-sexcomb (Polycomb, Extra-sexcomb) andbithorax (bithorax, bithoraxoid, Ultrabithorax) as compared to the expression of the extra-sexcomb mutants when no bithorax mutants are present in the genotype. If the bithorax mutants are recessive, the expression is usually greater when the non-allelic mutants are cis-hererozygotes than when they are trans-heterozygotes, but there is no difference between cis-and trans-heterozygotes in extra-sexcomb andUltrabithorax compounds.This work, begun while the author was a member of the staff of the Zoology Dept. of the University of California at Berkeley, was completed, with the assistance of a National Institutes of Health research grant (RG-6754), in the Dept. of Genetics of the University of Turku.  相似文献
