We investigated the influence of convenient diets on big-eyed bug Geocoris ochropterus. Development and reproduction of G. ochropterus fed on convenient diets of ant pupae Oecophylla smaragdina and silkworm pupae Bombyx mori were examined using aphids Aphis gossypii as the control diet. Results showed that Geocoris ochropterus nymphs completed development to adults on all diets. Total average development period was 35.1 days fed on ant pupae, 35.9 days fed on silkworm pupae, and 36.0 days fed on aphids. Head width, body length, forewing length, and fresh body weight of adults were not affected by diets, except for females reared on ant pupae that were significantly heavier than those fed on aphids. There was no significant difference in offspring sex ratio. Total number of eggs deposited per female fed on ant pupae was significantly larger than when fed on aphids, while eggs laid by females fed on silkworm pupae were significantly longer than eggs laid by females fed on aphids. Results suggest that ant pupae and silkworm pupae could be effectively used for mass rearing of G. ochropterus.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the effects of Bt cotton leaves (Bollgard II), non-Bt cotton leaves, and a mixture of Bt+non-Bt cotton leaves on larval orientation behavior, survival and development of Trichoplusia ni in the laboratory. Results indicate that in a no-choice test, more first and fifth instars remained on Bt leaves than the third instars. All larvae that remained on the leaves gradually moved to leaf edge. In the choice between a Bt and a non-Bt leaf, more first instars moved to non-Bt leaves, whereas the third and fifth instars did not show significant difference in the first 8 h, but eventually more moved to non-Bt leaves. More first instars fed non-Bt leaves than third instars and fifth instars. When larvae fed Bt leaves, 100% of first instars, 92.7% of third instars and 51.1% of fifth instars died in 108 h. Once larvae pupated, >90% developed to adults. First and third instars that fed Bt leaves developed slower but their pupae developed faster than those on Bt+non-Bt leaves, whereas fifth instars developed similar on the three types of leaves. First and third instars that fed Bt+non-Bt leaves resulted in less heavy pupae than those fed non-Bt leaves; whereas the fifth instars that survived on Bt leaves produced lighter pupae.  相似文献

The endangered Wyoming toad (Bufo baxteri) suffers nutrition related pathologies including poor growth and feeding difficulties from squamous metaplasia. Juvenile B. baxteri were each fed three supplemented feeder diets over 22 weeks and their growth, strike rate, and ingestion success measured. Diet (1) Enrichment Diet: feeder crickets fed fish oil, spirulina, and ground turtle feed; (2) Vitamin Diet: feeder crickets dusted heavily with Reptivite® multi-vitamin/mineral powder; and (3) Control Diet: feeder crickets dusted with calcium and Vitamin D powder. The Enrichment Diet produced faster growth in length (P<0.05) than those fed the Vitamin Diet, and at 22 weeks either the Enrichment Diet or Control Diet produced greater weight (P<0.05) than those on the Vitamin Diet. Toads fed the Vitamin Diet ingested significantly (P<0.01) less crickets (∼105 g/toad) compared with those fed the Enrichment Diet or Control Diet (∼121 g/toad). Approximately 50% of either Reptivite® multi-vitamin/mineral or calcium/vitamin D powder was lost within 90 sec of dusting. The Enrichment Diet produced the same strike rate (∼25 strikes in 5 min.) but higher (P<0.01) IS (38.3±4.2%) than those fed the Vitamin Diet (24.2±1.8%) or Control Diet (20.1±1.5). 1) Results showed that the Enrichment Diet provided superior growth, enrichment of feeder crickets provides an attractive alternative to the use of topical powders alone, and crickets lose ∼50% of topical powders within minutes. Feeding a diet highly enriched in retinol and unsaturated fatty acids resulted in improved growth and health for young Wyoming toads. Zoo Biol 28:197–213, 2009. © 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

A study was conducted with non-conventional ingredients to test their efficacy as fishmeal (FM) replacers in the diet of fringe- lipped carp. Labeo fimbriatus first feeding larvae and fry were reared for 30 and 60 days in indoor, 50 L, aerated, circular plastic tanks at 100 and 30 numbers tank−1, respectively. In the first feeding larvae to fry rearing experiment (Exp. 1), the fish were fed with either of the following isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets – live plankton, FM diet, green bottle fly (Lucilia sericata) larvae meal (GBFLM) diet and silkworm pupa (SWP) diet. The fry to fingerling rearing (Exp. 2), was also conducted using the same diets described above except live plankton. All compounded diets were formulated to contain 40% crude protein for the experiment 1 and 35% for experiment 2 and were fed ad libitum. Triplicate tanks were maintained for each treatment in both the experiments. In Exp. 1, the mean final weight of fry was higher with plankton and FM diets, while no difference (p > .05) was observed between FM and GBFLM diets. Weight of fish fed SWP diets was not statistically different from those fed GBFLM diet. No difference (p > .05) in final length, survival and condition factor was recorded. Analysis of digestive enzyme activity of whole fish revealed lower (p < .05) activity of amylase in fish fed plankton. In Exp. 2, no difference (p > .05) was observed between the different diet groups in terms of mean final weight, length, survival and condition factor. Analysis of digestive enzyme activity of whole fish revealed no difference (p > .05) in the activity of digestive enzymes between the treatments except a lower (p < .05) activity of trypsin in FM diet and lipase in FM and GBFLM diets. Since the survival and condition factors of animals is the most important aspect during nursery rearing, similar (p > .05) values recorded in different treatments indicate the possibility of incorporation of these non-conventional protein sources in the diet of L. fimbriatus during first feeding larvae to fry and fry to fingerling rearing.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of dietary fat on quality of liquid and frozen-thawed semen of Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls. Adult bulls (n = 21) were fed a balanced ration (Con; n = 7) or the same ration either containing sunflower oil (SF-O; n = 7) or whole sunflower seeds (SF-S; n = 7) for 63 days. Body weight and body condition score of each bull was recorded on days 0, 30 and 60 of the experiment. Semen was collected on days 39, 46, 53 and 60, frozen by a fast method and stored at −196 °C for 24 h. Sperm motility was assessed using a bright field microscope. Plasma membrane integrity of fresh and frozen-thawed spermatozoa was assessed using a hypo-osmotic swelling (HOS) assay. The concentration of spermatozoa and volume of semen was not different among groups on various days of collection. Sunflower-enriched diets did not affect the motility and number of HOS-positive spermatozoa in the fresh semen. Motility and HOS of post-thawed spermatozoa were higher (p < 0.05) in bulls fed the sunflower-enriched diets. Similarly, diets did not affect the body condition score and body weight of bulls. In conclusion, feeding of sunflower oil or sunflower seed as fat sources can improve the quality of buffalo bull spermatozoa.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate effects of fish oil replacement by sesame oil in combination with other vegetable oils in diets with regard to growth performance, feed utilization, desaturation and elongation, whole fish and liver fatty acid profiles of juvenile rainbow trout. Sesame oil (SO) used in the feeds was a mixture of linseed (LO), sunflower (SFO) and fish oil (FO), whereas the control diet contained only FO. Duplicate groups of 60 rainbow trout (~7 g) held under similar culture conditions were fed 2% of their body weight per day for 75 days. At the end of feeding trials, there was no difference in feed utilization efficiency or growth performance between the control group and the groups with added sesame oil (P > 0.05). However, viscerosomatic and hepatosomatic index values were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in fish fed with FO30/SO35/SFO35 diets. Results showed that total body lipid levels of fish fed diets containing sunflower oil were higher than in the other experimental groups (P < 0.05). However, crude lipid levels were similar in fish fed the control diet and the diet with sesame oil (FO30/LO35/SO35), which is sunflower oil‐free. Crude lipid levels of fish livers were not influenced by the diets (P > 0.05). Diets with sesame oil increased desaturation and elongation of 18 : 3n‐3 towards n‐3 HUFA. The conclusion was that the diet addition of sesame oil in combination with other vegetable oils increased the nutritional quality of the whole fish and liver of juvenile rainbow trout, in particular the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) level. Therefore, sesame oil may be of interest for use in aquaculture.  相似文献

In this study, the hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties of Ganoderma lucidum CG 144, a medicinal mushroom cultivated on wet wheat grains by solid-state fermentation, were investigated followed dietary supplementation. Basal chow was supplemented with 85, 50, or 10% of G. lucidum CG 144 dried spawn, resulting in G85, G50, and G10 diets, respectively, and fed to normocholesterolemic and induced-hypercholesterolemic mice. The G85 diet triggered significant loss of body weight compared with the G50 and G10 diets (P < 0.01). In the normocholesterolemic mice, regular consumption of high concentrations (G85 and G50 diets) of dried spawn led to significant changes in the plasma lipid concentrations (P < 0.05). Although there were no significant changes in the plasma cholesterol concentrations, the G85 and G50 diets decreased the low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels by 71 and 98%, respectively, and increased the high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels by 80 and 86%, respectively. Further, the plasma triacylglycerol levels decreased by 32.5 and 42% with the G85 and G50 diets, respectively. The G10 diet did not alter the plasma lipid profile in the normocholesterolemic mice (P > 0.05) but significantly decreased the cholesterol concentrations (P < 0.001) in the induced-hypercholesterolemic mice. Peritoneal macrophages from the induced-hypercholesterolemic mice fed the G10 diet produced lower nitric oxide than the controls (P < 0.05).  相似文献

Many carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) are known to feed on plant seeds, but the level of specialization on this food differs. This is the first study in which seed consumption is assessed for all larval instars and adults of ground beetles. Three species of Amara with syntopic occurrence, Amara aenea (DeGeer), Amara familiaris (Duftschmid) and Amara similata (Gyllenhal), were examined. Larvae of all three instars and adults were fed seeds of Stellaria media (L.) Vill., Capsella bursa‐pastoris (L.) Med. and Taraxacum officinale Wick. ex Wigg. in a laboratory no‐choice experiment. In general, larvae, particularly the first instar, showed greater differences in seed consumption than the adults, although the latter showed similar but less marked pattern. Amara aenea consumed all offered seed diets in all life stages. All three larval instars of granivorous A. familiaris almost exclusively fed on seeds of S. media and the adults also ate significantly more of this than other seeds. Amara similata consumed mostly seeds of C. bursa‐pastoris in the first instar and adult stages, whereas the larvae of the later instars seemed to be unspecialized on particular seed diet. Differences in seed‐specific consumption between larval instars in granivorous carabids are reported for the first time. The results provide further support for the parallel evolution of various degrees of granivory in the genus Amara, which may ultimately facilitate species coexistence. The daily seed consumption by the larvae was comparable or (in case of the third instar) even higher than that by the adults. Hence, we suggest that larvae may be the important consumers of seed in the field and should not be forgotten when seed predation is assessed.  相似文献

The effects of photoperiodic conditions of larval development and adult maturation (L : D = 12 : 12 vs. 18 : 6) and different diets (sugar solution, frozen eggs of Sitotroga cerealella, different numbers of aphids Myzus persicae, and their combinations) on survival, reproductive maturation and fecundity of Harmonia axyridis were studied in laboratory conditions. The fundamental aim of the work was to distinguish between cue effect of diet (neurohormonal triggering of reproduction) and direct effect of diet (nutritional maintenance of reproduction). When adults were kept under short‐day conditions, the proportion of ovipositing females decreased and the duration of the pre‐oviposition period increased. Moreover, a strong reaction to the direction of changes in the day length was demonstrated: when larvae and pupae developed at long day and adults were transferred to short day, the proportion of ovipositing females was much lower than in individuals that were permanently kept under short‐day conditions. The percentage of ovipositing females, the rate of their reproductive maturation and the average daily fecundity gradually increased in the following succession of diets: ‘sugar + 5 aphids per day < sugar + eggs < sugar + eggs + 5 aphids per day < sugar + 100 aphids per day’. However, dissection showed that most of the non‐laying females fed on these diets (particularly those kept under long‐day conditions) have started reproductive maturation, while even first stages of oogenesis were not found in females fed on sugar solution alone. We conclude that cue effect of diet (reproductive activation) can be achieved almost independently of the number of prey consumed, while nutritional effects (the rate of reproductive maturation and fecundity) are sensitive both to the quality and quantity of food.  相似文献

Pteromalus cerealellae (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) is an ectoparasitoid of several stored-product insect pests. Very little information has been published on its biology and development in host larvae, which typically are concealed within seeds. We documented the development of P. cerealellae within fourth instar larvae of its concealed host, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) infesting cowpea seeds. The preimaginal life stages of the parasitoid were characterized for the first time using morphological structures revealed by microscopic techniques including scanning electron microscopy. Pteromalus cerealellae produces hymenopteriform eggs and larvae. Eggs hatch into 13-segmented first instar larvae with peripneustic condition of spiracles. The larvae have simple, tusk-like mandibles, whereas the mandibles of the pupae and the adults are of the conventional toothed types. Using statistical analyses of the sizes of the larval mandibles and head capsules in conjunction with reliable characters such as the number of exuviae on the body of parasitoid larvae, cuticular folding, and excretion of the meconium, we recorded four larval instars for P. cerealellae. The data showed significant positive correlations between larval mandible lengths and widths of larval head capsules, as well as between mandible lengths and larval instars, suggesting that mandible length is a good predictor of the number of instars in P. cerealellae. Developmental time from egg to adult emergence was ∼12 d for females and ∼11 days for males at 30 ± 1°C, 70 ± 5% r.h. and 12L:12D photoperiod.  相似文献

Two mirids,Deraeocoris sp. andCampylomma nicolasi Reuter and one lygaeid,Geocoris ochropterus Fieber were found preying onB. tabaci (Gennadius) for the first time in Maharashtra State of India during 1987–88. Their biology and predation capacity onB. tabaci were studied in detail under laboratory conditions. The nymphal stage ofDeraeocoris sp. passed through 6 instars, whereas 5 instars in case of the remaining species.G. ochropterus, Deraeocoris sp. andC. nicolasi consumed on an average 482.5, 275.3 and 128.8 nymphs of 57.3, 25.5 and 20.6 days, respectively. On the basis of consumption rate per day,Deraeocoris sp. proved to be a superior predator. Part of Ph. D. Thesis submitted to Marathwada Agricultural University, Parbhani 431402, India.  相似文献

The life cycle and several life parameters of the zoophytophagous predator Engytatus varians (Distant) (Heteroptera: Miridae), including nymphal growth according to Dyar’s rule, were examined in the laboratory. The egg, nymph (five instars), and adult stages were 9.20, 17.36, and 19.02?d in length, respectively. The growth ratio for nymphs was consistent with Dyar’s rule based on the lengths of the femora of the forelegs, the tibiae and femora of the middle legs, and the antennae. Some biological characteristics of E. varians were also evaluated when the mirid was fed three different diets (B. cockerelli third instars, Sitotroga cerealella Olivier [Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae] eggs, and a mixture of both instars and eggs). The length of the nymphal stage was three days longer on a diet of only S. cerealella eggs than when the mirids were fed the third instars of B. cockerelli only or a mixture of both. The sex ratio was not affected by the type of diet. Nymphs of E. varians consumed B. cockerelli nymphs (80–85) when fed third instars only and third instars?+?S. cerealella eggs, respectively. The potential use of this predator as a biological control agent of B. cockerelli is discussed.  相似文献

Different stocking densities were investigated in larviculture and feeding of Lophiosilurus alexandri, as well as analyses of the effects on juveniles of two size‐classes and two different commercial formulated diets. The first experiment was two‐phased: (a) larvae stocked at densities of 60, 120, 180, 240, and 300 larvae L−1 fed with Artemia nauplii and reared for 15 days; (b) in phase 2, densities of 5, 10, 15, 30, and 40 juveniles L−1 were evaluated during feed training (20 days). Mean water temperature in both phases was 28°C. In the first phase of experiment 1, the different stocking densities did not affect fish growth or survival. In phase 2, growth was similar in all densities; however, survival was lower at higher densities. The increased density provided a rise in biomass and number of individuals produced in both phases. In the second experiment, two size‐classes of feed‐trained juveniles (30.22 ± 1.84 and 34.66 ± 2.41 mm) were given pellets of two different diameters (1.2 and 2.6 mm) for 20 days. The largest juveniles fed the 1.2 mm inert diet had higher final weights and lengths. Larviculture and feed training of L. alexandri can thus be performed successfully at high stocking densities of 300 larvae L−1 during the first 15 days of feeding, and at densities of up to 40 juveniles L−1 during the 20 days of feed training, respectively.  相似文献

Photoperiodic regulation of reproductive diapause in two invasive and two native populations of Harmonia axyridis and in one native population of Harmonia yedoensis was investigated in laboratory at 20°C, five photoperiods (day length of 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 h) and two diets: (i) eggs of the Angoumois grain moth Sitotroga cerealella and (ii) the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae. Laboratory strains originated from native populations of H. axyridis from Irkutsk province of Siberia and H. yedoensis from South Korea showed a strong photoperiodic response: under short photoperiods (10–14 h and 10–12 h for H. axyridis and H. yedoensis, correspondingly), all females which fed on eggs and most of those fed on aphids did not start to lay eggs during 40 days after emergence, while under long photoperiods, all females fed on aphids and most of those fed on eggs oviposited. The photoperiodic response of Haxyridis from South Korea was less strong: on the both diets, the range of the photoperiodic response (the difference in the proportion of ovipositing females between the treatments with long and short days) was ca 40%. In the European (Czech Republic) and in the Caucasian (Sochi region, Russia) invasive populations of H. axyridis, the photoperiodic response was very weak: the proportion of females that started oviposition (when fed on aphids) or at least reproductive maturation (when fed on eggs) during 40 days after emergence was close to 100%, independently of the photoperiodic conditions. Obviously, instead of a rapid micro‐evolutionary adaptation of the critical day length to a new climate, the invasive populations of the harlequin ladybird decrease their dependence on photoperiod and thus the weak photoperiodic response of SE Asian population of H. axyridis can be considered as a pre‐adaptation further developed during the invasion.  相似文献

Apparent digestibility and growth experiments with three oil seed by-products, soybean meal, cottonseed meal, and sunflower seed meal, were conducted using tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) with an initial average body weight of 93 ± 5 g and 64 ± 1 g, respectively. The diets were formulated on an isonitrogeneous and isoenergetic basis. During the experimental period the fish were fed 1% and 1.5% of their metabolic body weight (kg0.8) daily in the digestibility experiment and the growth experiment, respectively. Water temperature was maintained at 26.5 ± 1°C. Apparent digestibilities of the components and the diets were determined using an indirect method, i.e. with HCl-insoluble ash as an indicator. Faeces collection was carried out using a sedimentation technique.
Results of the apparent digestibilities showed that the crude protein, crude fat, as well as the gross energy digestibilities of soybean meal (93.0%, 94.6%, and 77.2%, respectively), were better than those of cottonseed meal (79.4%, 83.2%, and 57.9%, respectively) and sunflower seed meal (89.8%, 82.9%, and 49.3%, respectively). With the exception of the crude protein digestibility, nutrient and gross energy digestibilities of the cottonseed meal were found to be better than that of sunflower seed meal.
Growth experiment results indicated that soybean meal diet groups had inferior growth performance and feed conversion in comparison to the fishmeal control diet or the other test diets at an inclusion level of 32% of the digestible protein. Fish fed cottonseed meal diet and sunflower seed meal diet showed a relatively better, but not significantly different performance than did the fishmeal control diet. Supplementation diets with lysine and methionine did not enhance fish performance.  相似文献

The effect of diets varying in carbohydrate and protein content on the structure and function of the hindgut microbiota of crickets was evaluated by determining bacterial densities, fermentation activity, and guanine plus cytosine (G + C) profiles of the DNA extracted from the microbial hindgut community. DNA isolated from the gut community was fractionated and quantified according to G + C content as a comprehensive, coarse-level measure of the composition and structure of the community. The bacterial densities measured by direct counts were not significantly different among the four diets. The crickets were initially reared in the laboratory on cricket chow, which resulted in a hindgut community dominated by bacteria with a G + C content between 32% and 57%. Crickets shifted to an alfalfa diet showed a similar hindgut community G + C profile, although microbial populations with DNA between 35% and 45% G + C were more abundant in alfalfa- than chow-fed crickets. The apparent complexity of the gut community was reduced in crickets fed beet-pulp and protein-based diets compared to those fed chow and alfalfa, and was dominated by populations with a low percentage G + C content. Hindgut communities in crickets fed pulp and protein diets also showed a decrease in hydrogen and carbon dioxide production, suggesting that these diets affected the biochemical activity of the hindgut community. The protein-based diet resulted in a decrease in the rate of evolution of volatile fatty acids, while the ratio of butyrate production to acetate and propionate production was significantly higher in these crickets. Our results show the emergence of a new microbial community structure concomitant with changes in microbial biochemical activity due to shifts in the cricket's dietary regime.  相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted to study the effect of dietary protein (DP) levels on the enzyme activities of different stocks of Macrobrachium rosenbergii juveniles, fed two diets prawn type diets either at optimum (ODP, 32%) or sub‐optimum (SDP, 27%) dietary protein. The activity of key enzymes: glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, amino acid catabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, and energy metabolism was examined on different stocks of M. rosenbergii juveniles in various tissues (muscle, hepatopancreas, and gill). Wild juveniles of M. rosenbergii were collected from the west coast of India, Gujarat (G), Maharashtra (M) and from the east coast of India, Andhra Pradesh (A), and raised in culture ponds of 200 m2 at 1 juvenile m‐2. The experiment was conducted for a period of 60 days. A Visible Implant Elastomer (VIE) Tag was injected into different prawn juveniles’ stocks A, (3.06–3.10 g), M, (0.80–1.01 g) and G (0.90–1.06 g) for the individual identification of each class. All the animals were acclimatized for 7 days before being released into the pond. Each of the two diets, the first with 27% SDP, termed the sub‐optimum level (S), and the second 32% DP, termed the optimum level (O), was fed in triplicate ponds. The weight gain of stocked prawn was significantly higher for G stock (3.03 ± 0.18 g) compared to M stock (2.53 ± 0.25 g) and A stock (1.33 ± 0.10 g). In addition weight gain in ODP was significantly higher (3.05 ± 0.22 g) compared to SDP (2.11 ± 0.17 g). Furthermore, both protein level and stock type had a significant (p ≤ 0.05) effect on the survival rate, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio of the prawn. A significant interaction was recorded between metabolic enzyme activities and the variation of dietary protein levels and differences in M. rosenbergii stocks, in which stock “G” and “M” exhibited healthier enzyme physiological status than stock “A”. The findings presented here may conclude that the enzymes quickly respond to dietary protein manipulations of cultured shrimp. The results can be useful in identifying the optimum stock (genotypes) in a given culture condition and subsequently higher production may be achieved.  相似文献

As a first step towards the development of an ecologically rational control strategy against western corn rootworm (WCR; Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in Europe, we compared the susceptibility of the soil living larvae and pupae of this maize pest to infection by three entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) species. In laboratory assays using sand-filled trays, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Poinar and H. megidis Poinar, Jackson & Klein (both Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae) caused comparable mortality among all three larval instars and pupae of D. v. virgifera. In soil-filled trays, H. bacteriophora was slightly more effective against third larval instars and pupae, and H. megidis against third larval instars, compared to other developmental stages. In both sand and soil, Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev) (Rh.: Steinernematidae) was least effective against second instars. In conclusion, all larval instars of D. v. virgifera show susceptibility to infection by all three nematodes tested. It is predicted that early application against young larval instars would be most effective at preventing root feeding damage by D. v. virgifera. Applications of nematodes just before or during the time period when third instars are predominant in the field are likely to increase control efficacy. According to our laboratory assays, H. bacteriophora and H. megidis appear to be the most promising candidates for testing in the field. I. Hiltpold similarly contributed to this paper as the first author.  相似文献

  • Seed functional traits of native Helianthus species contribute towards ecosystem services but limitations to their use in managed programmes exist. Many perennial Helianthus possess seed dormancy. The ability for germination to occur under different temperature and drought conditions, as well as the capacity of germinated seeds to convert into normal seedlings is rarely considered. Our aim was to identify and quantify these constraints through functional trait analyses.
  • In five seed lots of native Helianthus (four perennial and one annual) and five genotypes of sunflower (H. annuus) for comparison, dormancy, thermal and hydro thresholds and times, morphology, mass, oil content and conversion into normal seedlings were quantified. The influence of the seed collection site environment on these traits was also explored.
  • Seed dormancy of the perennial species was overcome by scarification followed by germination in 5 mm GA3. Thermal and hydro‐time analyses revealed slower germination for the native seed lots (>1350 °Ch) in comparison to the sunflower genotypes (<829.9 °Ch). However, native seed lots had a higher capacity to convert into normal seedlings at high temperatures and low water potentials than sunflower genotypes. For the native seed lots, the average monthly temperature of the collection site was negatively correlated with thermal time.
  • Variability in seed functional traits of native Helianthus and greater capacity for germinated seeds to convert into normal seedlings suggests they are better equipped to cope with high temperature and drought scenarios than sunflower. Effective dormancy alleviation is required to facilitate the use of native Helianthus species.
