Summary During the Middle and early Late Triassic carbonate ramps and rimmed platforms developed at the northwestern margin of the Tethys ocean. In the Northern Calcareous Alps, Anisian stacked homoclinal ramps evolved through a transitional stage with distally steepened ramps to huge rimmed platforms of Late Ladinian to Early Carnian age. Middle Triassic to early Late Triassic facies and biota of basin, slope and platform depositional systems are described. Special emphasis is given to foraminifers, sponges, microproblematic organisms and algae. The Ladinian to early Carnian reef associations are characterized by the abundance of segmented sponges, microproblematica, biogenic crusts and synsedimentary cements. Among the foraminifers, recifal forms likeHydrania dulloi andCucurbita infundibuliformis (Carnian in age) are reported from the Northern Calcareous Alps for the first time. Some sphinctozoid sponges likeParavesicocaulis concentricus were known until now only from the Hungarian and Russian Triassic.  相似文献

We describe a new ammonoid fauna from the Taurus Mountains of southern Turkey. The Carnian ammonoid fauna from A?a?iyaylabel is presented for the first time. Ammonoids were obtained from limestone to marl beds of an approximately 35‐m‐thick section, which presents the rare opportunity to investigate ammonoid faunas across the Lower–Upper Carnian boundary. Intense sampling near the village of A?a?iyaylabel led to the recognition of a new Lower Carnian (Julian 2) to Upper Carnian (Tuvalian 1) ammonoid fauna from the Kasimlar Formation. The genus Kasimlarceltites gen. nov. is reported for the first time from the Taurus Mountains, which represents the main faunal element and occurs as huge mass occurrence (n ? 1 million). Kasimlarceltites krystyni gen. et sp. nov., Klipsteinia disciformis sp. nov. and Anasirenites crassicrenulatus sp. nov. occur within the Lower Carnian Carbonate member (Units A–B) of the Kasimlar Formation from the Taurus Platform Units. Ammonoids described from the marls of the Tuvalian Marlstone member were deposited during a major, Tethyan‐wide climate crisis – the so‐called Carnian crisis – characterized by a demise of carbonate platforms. Based on the biostratigraphic relevance of certain ammonoid taxa described herein, the age of the analysed parts of the Kasimlar Formation is Julian 2 to Tuvalian 1. The discovery of the new ammonoid assemblages from A?a?iyaylabel substantiates the significance of Upper Triassic faunas within the Taurus Mountains and facilitates the correlation with faunal assemblages from other regions in the Tethyan Realm. The ammonoid fauna and facies indicate a general deepening from open‐platform margins, over deeper shelf settings down to an open marine‐influenced basinal environment. The tentative habitat for Kasimlarceltites gen. nov. is a shallow platform environment to upper mid‐ramp.  相似文献

Summary An Upper Ladinian to Lower Carnian succession in the Idrija-Cerkno region (W Slovenia) is described and correlated with similar successions in the Dolomites. Structurally, the area belongs to the Rodne unit (Trnovo nappe, NW Dinarides). The succession was reconstructed from three stratigraphically superimposed sections. The Orehovska Grapa section is characterised by finegrained turbidites composed of sandy mudstones with intercalations of lenses and beds of trachy-andesite tuff and resedimented tuffs. Beds of hemipelagic light grey wackestone are rarely interstratified. These rocks are correlative with the Upper Ladinian Wengen Group. The Police1 section is composed of black shaly marls and mudstones, hemipelagic wackestone, tuffaceous sand-stones, and in the upper part, of calciturbidites overlain by black laminated shales. The section is correlated with the lower part of the San Cassiano Formation. The Police 2 section consists mainly of wavy bedded peloidal and bioclastic limestone, alternating with thin interbeds of shaly mudstones and marls. The limestone and mudstones are interpreted as tempestites and gradually pass into bedded and massive dolomite of Early Carnian age. This succession is similar to the transition from the San Cassiano Formation to the Cassian Dolomite. The studied succession represents a shallowing upward basinal sequence capped by carbonate platform deposits. Palaeogeographically it is a Late Ladinian transition from the carbonate platform in the south to the typical basinal area in the north.  相似文献

New sampling on critical intervals of the uppermost Permian and Triassic successions of the Northern Karakorum Terrain in the Karakorum Range (Pakistan) has refined the stratigraphy. Two types of successions may be distinguished in the Karakorum Range: a carbonate platform succession, spanning the whole interval from Upper Permian to Upper Triassic, possibly with several gaps; and a basinal succession, deposited from the Middle Permian to Early Carnian (Late Triassic), when the carbonate platform prograded into the basin. With the approaching and later docking of the Karakorum Block against the Asian margin closing the Paleo-Tethys, a portion of Karakorum emerged while another part subsided as a fore-deep, receiving clastics from the emerging Cimmerian Range. Molassic sediments filled the basin, whilst shallow-water carbonates transgressed over the emerged carbonate platform sometime between the latest Triassic and the Pliensbachian (Early Jurassic), with Cimmerian deformation occurring to the north. The age control is provided by conodonts, with assemblages of late Wuchiapingian, Changhsingian, Induan (Griesbachian and Dienerian), late Olenekian, early Anisian, late Ladinian, and early Carnian ages, respectively. Some information on the section around the P/T boundary is provided by palynology and isotopic C13 values. The dating of the Norian/Rhaetian platform is provided by foraminifers.  相似文献

Ostracod association from the Upper Triassic (Tropites dilleri zone of the Carnian stage) of the sedimentary succession (Mufara Formation) exposed along the east side of Monte Scalpello (Catenanuova, central eastern Sicily) has been studied for the first time. The specimens, silicified, are rare but well preserved and often consist of complete carapaces. They belong to eight families: Healdiidae, Cavellinidae, Bairdiidae, Acratiidae, Bythocyprididae, Pontocyprididae, Judahellidae, Glorianellidae. Twenty-three taxa have been listed; the family Bairdiidae is the most represented among all the others with fifteen species. Four species are new: Bairdia scaliae n. sp., Acratia maugerii n. sp., “Anchistrocheles” gemmellaroi n. sp. and Judahella? montanarii n. sp. Other species are left in open nomenclature because of the lack of specimens.  相似文献

The Upper Permian to Lower Jurassic El Antimonio Group has been considered as part of the NW–SE-trending tectonostratigraphic Antimonio terrane in Sonora, Mexico. The Upper Triassic Rio Asunción Formation of the El Antimonio Group comprises a shallow-marine detrital-carbonate succession at three major localities near Caborca and Hermosillo. Previous reconstructions have proposed differing depositional environments for the Rio Asunción Formation (e.g., carbonate platform, carbonate ramp) and remained therefore nonconsensual. The present study has its focus on the Rio Asunción Formation and includes the analyses of 129 thin-sections of carbonate and mixed siliciclastic–carbonate rocks from three localities (Barra los Tanques, Sierra del Álamo, and Sierra Santa Teresa). In Sierra del Álamo, ammonite findings allowed us to confirm the position of the Triassic–Jurassic boundary. Considering the lack of biostratigraphic markers and the clastic nature of the samples, a statistical approach was used to propose a depositional model that can provide more detailed insights into this sedimentary succession. Hierarchical cluster analyses were performed on the gathered abundance data to identify microfacies and to compare the results for each outcrop. Through these analyses, 22 microfacies were defined, which describe the depositional environments of the two main localities. Furthermore, it could be demonstrated through this approach that not only the localities of Barra los Tanques and Sierra del Álamo but also the outcrops near Sierra Santa Teresa belong to the Antimonio depositional system. To gain insights into the relative depositional conditions among the microfacies, non-metric multidimensional scaling was performed. The resulting trends of water energy and proximity to the shoreline of Laurentia were then used to propose a depositional model for the mixed siliciclastic–carbonate Antimonio ramp system.  相似文献

The Triassic sediments of the External Zones of the Betic Cordillera were deposited on the Southern Iberian Continental Palaeomargin. Two coeval Ladinian formations, namely the Siles Formation and the Cehegín Formation, are described to illustrate the facies and lithostratigraphic variability in the Muschelkalk carbonates. There has been some dispute over the number of carbonate units present in the Siles Formation. Our studies assign a tectonic origin to these recurrent carbonate units. Both formations comprise only one carbonate unit, which is correlated to the Upper Muschelkalk of the Catalan and Germanic basins and some Iberian Range sections. To characterize the sedimentological features of these formations, 14 facies were defined. The most widespread sediment was originally lime mud, although bioclastic deposits are also common. In the facies succession, a main transgressive-regressive sequence could be identified. According to the facies model proposed here, a muddy coastal and shallow-water platform prograded over mid ramp deposits. There is no evidence for a seawards reefal or oolitic-bioclastic sandy barrier. The most significant feature of this sedimentary interpretation is that these carbonate facies show clear characteristics of an epicontinental platform.  相似文献

Two new sites of condensed Hallstatt Red Limestones were found in the Rappoltstein mountain range near Berchtesgaden (SE Bavaria). Conodont and ammonoid assemblages allowed for a concise age-dating of the lower two of seven already described Hallstatt ammonoid horizons as latest Ladinian to Lower Carnian (Upper Triassic). Biostratigraphy, microfacies analysis and stratigraphic cross-correlation of other Hallstatt sites allowed the documentation of the Late Lower Carnian ‘Reingraben Event’ within a mixed allochthonous–autochthonous carbonaceous lithofacies at the Rappoltstein, and gave further insights into the special architecture of the so-called ‘Hallstatt deep swells’ and the Hallstatt Basin. δ18Ophos of conodont apatite was measured in order to reconstruct marine palaeotemperatures. The reconstructed low seawater temperatures may be at least due to different palaeoclimatic scenarios that could have preceded the ‘Carnian crisis’.  相似文献

Skeletobionts are important components of most shallow marine ecosystems. Prior to the fossils reported herein, evidence of skeletobionts was absent from Upper Triassic successions on the northwestern margin of Pangaea. The boring Talpina ramosa is reported from bivalve body fossils from the Upper Triassic (Lower Norian) lower Pardonet Formation at Pink Mountain in northeastern British Columbia. This Ichnotaxon penetrates through both the outer and inner surface of articulated and disarticulated bivalve shells preserved within sharp-based event beds. The occurrence of these trace fossils underscores the paucity of borings, bioerosional structures, and encrusting taxa from Triassic successions in the western Pangaean realm. Due to erosional removal of shallow water strata by a post-Triassic unconformity, these event beds provide the only available information regarding the ecological health of Late Triassic depositional systems in the study area.  相似文献

Two sites in the Villány Hills, Hungary, have yielded rich fish assemblages from Middle to Late Triassic shallow marine deposits. The collected material comes from the Ladinian Templomhegy Dolomite Member and from the Carnian Mészhegy Sandstone Formation. The ichthyofauna is composed of both chondrichthyans (Hybodontidae indet., Palaeobates angustissimus, ‘Polyacrodus’ sp., ?Lissodus sp.) and osteichthyans (Gyrolepis sp., Birgeria sp., and further indeterminate actinopterygians). Despite the large sample size, no remains of neoselachians have been found. The Ladinian Templomhegy Dolomite is dominated by durophagous hybodontiforms (Palaeobates angustissimus, ?Lissodus sp.), but the piscivorous hybodontid and the generalist ‘Polyacrodus’ sp. are missing, while in the fish fauna collected from the Carnian Mészhegy Formation indeterminate piscivorous hybodontids are the most common elements and durophagous forms are much less abundant. The dominance of piscivorous hybodontids in the Carnian Mészhegy Sandstone could be related to the global decrease of diversity of marine fish-eating reptiles (e.g., nothosaurs) or to a change of paleoenvironmental conditions. The present study improves our knowledge on the poorly known Triassic vertebrate faunas of the Tisza Mega-unit, which formed a segment of the passive Neotethys margin of the European Plate and shows an important example of a potential vertebrate faunal shift during the Middle to Late Triassic.  相似文献

Summary The Cabo Cope Unit, which outcrops east of Aguilas (Murcia), belongs to the Maláguide tectonic Complex (Betic Internal Zone) and displays stratigraphic characteristics of particular interest, including Triassic bioclastic carbonate beds which are not common in the Maláguide units. Biostratigrafic fossils have been found in these beds and may correlate with Triassic alpine biofacies. Alpine fauna fossils only appeared in those palaeogeographic units of the Internal Zone of the Cordillera referred to as Alpujárride units, while the influence of the Sephardic faunal province is evident in almost all the cordillera. For these reasons it is noteworthy that new alpine fauna fossils have been found in an Internal Zone unit in which relevant fossils rarely appear. The Triassic succession of the unit studied in this paper can be subdivided into two members: a lower one, which is clastic and contains thick gypsum beds, and an upper one, consisting of carbonate rocks. The lower member has been interpreted as a fluvial-coastal deposit. The upper member is interpreted as a sequence of carbonate ramp deposits. This ramp evolved into a shallow platform with tidal flats typical of a coastal zone. The bivalve fossilsDaonella cf.lommeli (Wissmann) and “Posidonia” sp. have been found in the carbonate member, along with the conodontSephardiella mungoensis (Diebel). These fossils are of the Late Ladinian age and have been found only in this outcroup of the Betic Cordillera. The presence of this fossil assemblage, which belongs to the alpine faunal province, indicates a connection during the Late Ladinian between the Tethys sea and this area of the Maláguide palaeogeographic domain. The palaeogeographic location of the Cabo Cope Unit during the Middle Triassic was at the south-easternmost part of the Betic Basin, implying that the connection between the Tethys and the Betic Basin was established in the easternmost domains of the basin.  相似文献

We here report a high-resolution organic C-isotope record from terrestrial–marine transitional sediments of the Badong Formation in the Luojiagou section, Zigui Basin of Hubei Province, South China. Our organic carbon isotope (δ13Corg) profile, ranging from -21.2‰ to -26.2‰, shows four negative carbon-isotope shifts. We suggest that the sharpest negative carbon isotope excursion in the upper portion of the Badong Formation marks the main phase of the Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE) in the basin, likely correlated with those in other depositional records of this time. The occurrence of the CPE in the Badong Formation would imply that the stratigraphic coverage of the Badong Formation might be prolonged to incorporate (at least part of) the Late Triassic Carnian stage. This result provides a potential case for understanding the CPE in continental–marine environments in the eastern Tethys realm, and is significant for exploring the palaeoclimate variation across the Late Triassic.  相似文献

Nanogomphodon wildi n. gen., n. sp. is based on a tiny lower postcanine tooth from the lower Lettenkeuper (Lower Keuper or Erfurt Formation; Ladinian) of Michelbach an der Bilz (Baden-Württemberg). It represents the first record of a traversodont cynodont from the Middle Triassic of Europe and exhibits a distinctive combination of dental features. Along with recent discoveries of other traversodont taxa from the Upper Triassic of eastern North America,Nanogomphodon indicates the existence of a distinct lineage of these cynodonts in the Northern Hemisphere.   相似文献

Recent investigations carried out in the Ib River Coalfield, Mahanadi Master Basin, Orissa, identified some fossiliferous beds in the Lower Gondwana deposits. Two exposures of the Lower Kamthi Formation yielded diverse and abundant plant remains, which includeNeomariopteris, Vertebraria, and a scale leaf along with 14Glossopteris species otherwise mapped as Barren Measures and Upper Kamthi formations.Glossopteris indica dominates the flora (22.78%) followed byG. communis (17.72%) andG. browniana (13.92%). Based on megafloral assemblages, different beds exposed at Gopalpur and Laxamanpur Pahar are assigned here to the Lower Kamthi Formation (Late Permian). The floristic composition suggests that a warm and humid climate prevailed during the Late Permian. The status of the Kamthi Formation in the Ib River Coalfield has been redefined in the present study.  相似文献

The sedimentology, microfacies, and stratigraphic age (from planktonic and benthic foraminifera and strontium-isotope stratigraphy) of a 300-m-thick Upper Cretaceous carbonate succession from the Island of ?iovo (central Dalmatia, Croatia) were analyzed in order to determine the lithostratigraphic, depositional, and chronostratigraphic framework. The Cretaceous strata were deposited in the southern part of the long-lasting (Late Triassic to Paleogene) Adriatic-Dinaridic Carbonate Platform (ADCP), one of a few late Mesozoic, intra-Tethyan, peri-Adriatic (sub)tropical archipelagos. The succession is separated by a firmground formational boundary into two lithostratigraphic units: the underlying Middle to Upper Campanian Dol Formation consisting of slope pelagic limestone with intercalated turbidites and debrites, and the overlying Upper Campanian ?iovo Formation composed of outer-ramp bioclastic-lithoclastic and echinoderm-dominated packstone. Age, lithology, and depositional settings of the ?iovo Formation are different from other penecontemporaneous, regionally important inner-platform carbonate successions within the ADCP domain. Therefore, the ?iovo Formation is proposed here as a new lithostratigraphic unit. Regionally important condensed intervals in the form of at least two firmground surfaces, characterized by Thalassinoides burrows (with phosphatic mineralization) that belong to the Glossifungites ichnofacies, occur in the lowermost part of the ?iovo Formation. Abrupt shallowing of depositional environments at the boundary between the Dol and the ?iovo Formation, and the generation of the formational boundary firmground, likely correlate with the regionally recorded Upper Campanian Event that represents a global eustatic sea-level fall. A regionally important subaerial exposure surface with nodular calcrete, rhizoliths, and Microcodium aggregates in the upper part of the ?iovo Formation represents a regional subaerial unconformity that was recorded across the ADCP domain and was interpreted as a consequence of diachronous and differential uplift of various parts of the platform in response to the formation of a forebulge in front of the approaching Dinaridic orogen.  相似文献
