Although both nutrient inputs and zooplankton grazing are importantto phytoplankton and bacteria in lakes, controversy surroundsthe relative importance of grazing pressure for these two groupsof organisms. For phytoplankton, the controversy revolves aroundwhether zooplankton grazers, especially large cladocerans likeDaphnia, can effectively reduce phytoplankton populations regardlessof nutrient conditions. For bacteria, little is known aboutthe balance between possible direct and indirect effects ofboth nutrients and zooplankton grazing. However, there is evidencethat bacteria may affect phytoplankton responses to nutrientsor zooplankton grazing through direct or apparent competition. We performed a mesocosm experiment to evaluate the relativeimportance of the effects of nutrients and zooplankton grazingfor phytoplankton and bacteria, and to determine whether bacteriamediate phytoplankton responses to these factors. The factorialdesign crossed two zooplankton treatments (unsieved and sieved)with four nutrient treatments (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 µgphosphorus (P) l1 day1 together with nitrogen(N) at a N:P ratio of 20:1 by weight). Weekly sieving with 300µm mesh reduced the average size of crustacean zooplanktonin the mesocosms, decreased the numbers and biomass of Daphnia, and increased the biomass of adult copepods. Nutrient enrichmentcaused significant increases in phytoplankton chlorophyll a(45x), bacterial abundance and production (1.3x and 1.6x,respectively), Daphnia (3x) and total zooplankton biomass (2x).Although both total phytoplankton chlorophyll a and chlorophylla in the <35 µm size fraction were significantly lowerin unsieved mesocosms than in sieved mesocosms, sieving hadno significant effect on bacterial abundance or production. There was no statistical interaction between nutrient and zooplanktontreatments for total phytoplankton biomass or bacterial abundance, although there were marginally significant interactions forphytoplankton biomass <35 µm and bacterial production. Our results do not support the hypothesis that large cladoceransbecome less effective grazers with enrichment; rather, the differencebetween phytoplankton biomass in sieved versus unsieved zooplanktontreatments increased across the gradient of nutrient additions.Furthermore, there was no evidence that bacteria buffered phytoplanktonresponses to enrichment by either sequestering P or affectingthe growth of zooplankton. 相似文献

Plankton in the River Rhine: structural and functional changes observed during downstream transport 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6

The growth dynamics of phytoplankton, zooplankton and bacterioplanktonin the River Rhine were analysed simultaneously with a numberof environmental factors in order to identify environmentalsteering factors and to describe some of their interrelations.Observations on the metabolic activity (for algae and bacteria)and density (for all organisms) were carried Out three timesin 1990 using successive sampling of the same water parcel duringits transport in the lower 660 km reach of the river. High algaldensities (up to 170.5 µg chlorophyll a l1), rotifers(up to 1728 l1), crustaceans (up to 65 l1) andbacteria (up to 16x109 l1) were found. Algae and rotifersshowed a rapid successive development during transport, whilecrustaceans were only abundant in the tidal reach of the river. In May, a vigorous growth of phytoplankton, zooplankton andbacteria was found. The diatom-dominated phytoplankton depletedthe dissolved silicate in the river water and this led to acollapse of the populations, indicated by a decreased specificrate of photosynthesis (measured by the 14C method) and vigorousbacterial growth (measured by [3H]thymidine incorporation).Subsequently, the remaining phytoplankton diminished to verylow levels near the river mouth. In July and September, it seemedthat biological interactions within the plankton populationsor between plankton and benthos balance the population densitiesso that separate developmental stages, as in spring, were lessprominent. Estimates of the growth rates and loss rates of thephytoplankton were made. Phytoplankton exerted a substantialinfluence on the partitioning of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, silicate) over water and suspended matter (as analysed by elementanalysis). It seems likely that only the reduction of phosphate,as planned under the Rhine Action Programme, and not that ofnitrogen, may restrict the peaks of plankton growth describedhere. 相似文献

Trophic structure in the pelagial of 25 shallow New Zealand lakes: changes along nutrient and fish gradients 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9

To gain better insight into the importance of predator and resourcecontrol in New Zealand lakes we surveyed the late summer trophicstructure of 25 shallow South Island lakes with contrastingnutrient levels (6603 µg TP l1) and fishdensities. Total catch of fish per net (CPUE) in multi-meshgillnets placed in the open water and the littoral zones waspositively related with the nutrient level. Trout CPUE was negativelycorrelated with total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN).Zooplankton seemed largely influenced by fish, as high fishCPUE coincided with low zooplankton and Daphnia biomass, lowaverage weight of cladocerans, low contribution of Daphnia tototal cladoceran biomass, low ratio of calanoids to total copepodbiomass and low ratio of zooplankton biomass to phytoplanktonbiomass. However, chlorophyll a was only slightly negativelyrelated to Daphnia biomass and not to zooplankton biomass ina multiple regression that included TN and TP. Ciliate abundancewas positively related to chlorophyll a and negatively to Daphniabiomass, but not to total zooplankton biomass, while no relationshipswere found between heterotrophic nanoflagellates and zooplankton. The relationships between fish abundance and nutrients and fishabundance and zooplankton:phytoplankton ratio and between chlorophylla and TP largely followed the pattern obtained for 42 northtemperate Danish lakes. We conclude that fish, including trout, have a major effect on the zooplankton community structure andbiomass in the pelagial of the shallow oligotrophic to slightlyeutrophic New Zealand lakes, but that the cascading effectson phytoplankton and protist are apparently modest. 相似文献

Microphytoplankton and zooplankton composition and distributionin the vicinity of the Prince Edward Islands and at the Sub-antarcticFront (SAF) were investigated in late austral summer (April/May)1996. Samples were collected for analysis of chlorophyll a concentration(Chi a), microphytoplankton and zooplankton abundance. Generally, the highest Chl a concentrations (up to 2.0 µg l1)and zooplankton densities (up to 192 ind. m3) were recordedat stations within the inter-island area while the lowest values(<0.4 µg l1) were observed at stations upstreamof the islands. High Chl a and zooplankton biomass values werealso associated with the SAF. Microphytoplankton were dominatedby chain-forming species of the genera Chaetoceros (mainly C.neglectus),Fragilariopsis spp. and the large diatom Dactyliosolen antarcticus. The zooplankton assemblages were always dominated by mesozooplanktonwhich at times contributed up to 98% of total zooplankton abundanceand up to 95% of total biomass. Among mesozooplankton, copepods, mainly Clausocalanus brevipes and Metridia lucens numericallydominated. Among the macrozooplankton euphausiids, mainly Euphausiavallentini, E.longirostis and Stylocheiron maximum, and chaetognaths(Sagitta gazellae) accounted for the bulk of abundance and biomass.Cluster and ordination analysis did not identify any distinctbiogeographic regions among either the microphytoplankton orzooplankton. 相似文献

Composition and distribution of the pelagic and sympagic algal assemblages in the Laptev Sea during autumnal freeze-up 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5

The phytoplankton and ice algal assemblages in the SiberianLaptev Sea during the autumnal freeze-up period of 1995 aredescribed. The spatial distribution of algal taxa (diatoms, dinoflagellates, chrysophytes, chlorophytes) in the newly formedice and waters at the surface and at 5 m depth differed considerablybetween regions. This was also true for algal biomass measuredby in situ fluorescence, chlorophyll (Chl) a and taxon-specificcarbon content. Highest in situ fluorescence and Chl a concentrations(ranging from 0.1 to 3.2 µg l1) occurred in surfacewaters with maxima in Buor Khaya Bay east of Lena Delta. Thealgal standing stock on the shelf consisted mainly of diatoms, dinoflagellates, chrysophytes and chlorophytes with a totalabundance (excluding unidentified flagellates <10 µm)in surface waters of 35133 660 cells l1. Highestalgal abundance occurred close to the Lena Delta. Phytoplanktonbiomass (phytoplankton carbon; PPC) ranged from 0.1 to 5.3 µgC l1 in surface waters and from 0.3 to 2.1 µg Cl1 at 5 m depth, and followed the distribution patternof abundances. However, the distribution of Chl a differed considerablyfrom the distribution pattern shown by PPC. The algal assemblagein the sea ice, which could not be quantified due to high sedimentload, was dominated by diatom species, accompanied by dinoflagellates. Thus, already during the early stage of autumnal freeze-up,incorporation processes, selective enrichment and subsequentgrowth lead to differences between surface water and sea icealgal assemblages. 相似文献

Studies were conducted over a 13 month period at four pelagicsites in eutrophic Lake Okeechobee, Florida (USA), in orderto quantify carbon (C) uptake rates by size-fractionated phytoplankton, and subsequent transfers of C to zooplankton. This was accomplishedusing laboratory 14C tracer methods and natural plankton assemblages. The annual biomass of picoplankton (<2 µm), nanoplankton(220 µm) and microplankton (<20 µm averaged60, 389 and 100 µg C 11 respectively, while correspondingrates of C uptake averaged 7, 51 and 13 µg C11h1. The biomass of microzooplankton (40200 µm)and macrozooplankton (<200 µm averaged 18 and 60 µgC 11, respectively, while C uptake rates by these herbivoregroups averaged 2 and 3 µg C 11 h1. Therewere no strong seasonal patterns in any of the plankton metrics. The ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton C uptake averaged7% over the course of the study. This low value is typical ofthat observed in eutrophic temperate lakes with small zooplanktonand large inedible phytoplankton, and indicates ineffectiveC transfer in the grazing food chain. On a single occasion, there was a high density (<40 11) of Daphnia lumholrzii,a large-bodied exotic cladoceran. At that time, zooplanktoncommunity C uptake was <20 µg C 11 h1and the ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton C uptake was near30%. If D.lumholrzii proliferates in Lake Okeechobee and theother Florida lakes where it has recently been observed, itmay substantially alter planktonic C dynamics. 相似文献

Biomass, feeding and production of Noctiluca scintillans in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The abundance and biomass of the large heterotrophic dinoflagellateNoctiluca scintillans, together with the changes in its potentialprey items, were monitored in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, duringsummer 1997 (17 July-11 August). Growth and grazing rates ofNscintillans fed natural plankton populations were also measuredeight and seven times, respectively, during the survey period. The abundance and biomass of N scintillans averaged over thewater column (19 m) were in the range 1345 cells 11(temporalaverage = 93 cell11) and 0.149.6 µg C l1(temporalaverage = 13.8 µg C l1; three times higher thanthat of calanoid copepods during the same period). Noctilucascintillans populations followed the changes in phytoplankton:N.scintillans biomass was increasing during the period of diatomblooms and was at a plateau or decreasing during periods oflow chlorophyll a. The growth rates of N.scintillans (µ)were also consistent with the wax and wane of the N.scintillanspopulation: N.scintillans showed highest growth rates duringdiatom blooms. A simple relationship between µ and chlorophylla concentration was established, and the production of N.scintillanswas estimated using this relationship and the measured biomass. The estimated production averaged over the water column wasin the range >0.15.2 µg C l1 day1(temporalaverage = 1.4 µg C l1 day1; 64% of the productionof calanoid copepods during the same period). Diatom clearancerates by N.scintillans were in the range 0.100.35 mlcell1 day1, and the phytoplankton population clearanceby N.scintillans was >12% day1. Thus, although thefeeding pressure of N.scintillans on phytoplankton standingstock was low, N.scintillans was an important member of themesozooplank-ton in terms of biomass and production in the SetoInland Sea during summer. 相似文献

The seasonal development of bacteria was studied in the hypertrophiccoastal lagoon Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (Caribbeancoast of Colombia). This large but only 1.5 m deep lagoon issubject to strong seasonal variations of salinity from almostfully marine (April/May) to brackish conditions in October/November.Chlorophyll ranged from 6 to 182 µg L1, and grossprimary production amounted to 1690 g C m2 per year.Total bacterial number (TBN) ranged from 6.5 to 90.5 x 109 cellsL1 and bacterial biomass (BBM) from 77 to 1542 µgC L1, which are among the highest ever reported for naturalcoastal waters. Neither TBN nor BBM varied significantly withsalinity, phytoplankton or seston concentrations. Only the bacterialmean cell volume showed a significant relation to salinity, being highest (0.066 µm3) during the period of increasingand lowest (0.032 µm3) during decreasing salinity. Bacterialprotein accounted for 24% (1926%) and phytoplankton proteinfor 57% (5371%) of total seston protein. The ratio (annualmean) of bacterial carbon to phytoplankton carbon was 0.44 (range0.041.43). At low phytoplankton abundance [chlorophylla (Chl a) < 25 µg L1], bacterial carbon wasalmost equal to phytoplankton biomass (i.e. the mean ratio was1.04). In contrast, at Chl a > 100 µg L1, BBMwas low compared to phytoplankton biomass (the mean ratio was0.16). In general, BBM varied less than phytoplankton biomass. Most probably, the missing correlation between bacterial andphytoplankton variables was due to (i) organic material partlyderived from allochthonous sources serving as food resourcefor bacteria and (ii) a strong resuspension of bacteria fromthe sediment caused by frequent wind-induced mixing of the veryshallow lagoon. 相似文献

Microzooplankton herbivory and bacterivory in Newfoundland coastal waters during spring, summer and winter 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Grazing by microzooplankton on autotrophic and heterotrophicpicoplankton as well as >0.7 µm phytoplankton (as measuredby chlorophyll a) was quantified during July, August, October,January and April in the surface layer of Logy Bay, Newfoundland(47°38'14'N, 52°39'36'W). Rates of growth and grazingmortality of bacteria, Synechococcus and >0.7 µm phytoplanktonwere measured using the sea water dilution technique. Microzooplanktoningested 83184, 96366 and 64118% of bacterial,Synechococcus and >0.7 µm phytoplankton daily potentialproduction, respectively and 34111, 2530 and 16131%of bacterial, Synechococcus and >0.7 µm phytoplanktonstanding stocks, respectively. The trends in prey net growthrates followed the seasonal cycles of prey biomass, suggestingthat microzooplankton are important grazers in Newfoundlandcoastal waters. Ingestion was lowest during January and October(~2 µg C l1 day1) and highest in August(~20 µg C l1 day1). Aside from April when>0.7 µm phytoplankton represented the majority (~80%)of carbon ingested, bacterioplankton and <1 µm phytoplanktonrepresented most of the carbon ingested (~40100%). Althoughmicrozooplankton have here-to-fore been unrecognized as an importantgrazer population in Newfoundland coastal waters, these resultssuggest that they play an important role in carbon flow withinthe pelagic food web, even at low temperatures in Logy Bay. 相似文献

Community structure, biomass and productivity of size-fractionated summer phytoplankton populations in lower Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Seventeen size-fractionation experiments were carried out duringthe summer of 1979 to compare biomass and productivity in the< 10, <8 and <5 µm size fractions with that ofthe total phytoplankton community in surface waters of NarragansettBay. Flagellates and non-motile ultra-plankton passing 8 µmpolycarbonate filters dominated early summer phytoplankton populations, while diatoms and dinoflagellates retained by 10 µm nylonnetting dominated during the late summer. A significant numberof small diatoms and dinoflagellates were found in the 108µm size fraction. The > 10 µm size fraction accountedfor 50% of the chlorophyll a standing crop and 38% of surfaceproduction. The <8 µm fraction accounted for 39 and18% of the surface biomass and production. Production by the< 8 µm fraction exceeded half of the total communityproduction only during a mid-summer bloom of microflagellates.Mean assimilation numbers and calculated carbon doubling ratesin the <8 µm (2.8 g C g Chl a1 h1; 0.9day1)and<5 µm(1.7 g C g Chl a1h1; 0.5day1)size fractions were consistently lower than those of the totalpopulation (4.8 g C g Chl a1 h1; 1.3 day1)and the <10 µm size fraction (5.8 g C g Chl a1h1; 1.4 day 1). The results indicate that smalldiatoms and dinoflagellates in fractionated phytoplankton populationscan influence productivity out of proportion to their numbersor biomass.

Phytoplankton and nutrients in the waters north-west of Spitsbergen in the autumn of 1979 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Phytoplankton biomass, primary production rates and inorganicnutrients were measured in the uppermost layer of the ice-edgeregion and in open water and compared with environmental factorsduring a three-week cruise in September October 1979.Biomass and production values were low (maximum 2.2 µgchl a l1, 2.5 mg C m3 h1). A post-bloomcommunity of diatoms, consisting mainly of representatives ofChaetoceros, Leptocylindrus, Nitzschia and Thalassiosira, waspredominant. Concentrations of phosphate were quite low (maximum0.55 µM I1). Nitrate and silicate ranged from nomeasurable quantities to 5.7 µM l1 and 3.8 µMl1, respectively. The possibility of light and nutrientlimitation on phytoplankton growth is discussed. 相似文献

The impact of grazing by natural assemblages of microzooplanktonwas estimated in an upwelling area (Concepción, Chile)during the non-upwelling season in 2003 and 2004. Seawater dilutionexperiments using chlorophyll a (Chl a) as a tracer were usedto estimate daily rates of phytoplankton growth and microzooplanktongrazing. Initial Chl a concentrations ranged from 0.4 to 1.4mg Chl a m3 and phytoplankton prey biomass and abundancewere numerically dominated by components <20 µm. Phytoplanktongrowth and microzooplankton grazing rates were 0.190.25day1 and 0.260.52 day 1, respectively. These results suggest that microzooplankton exert a significantremoval of primary production (>100%) during the non-upwellingperiod. 相似文献

Photoadaptation in Antarctic phytopfankton: variations in growth rate, chemical composition and P versus I curves 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The response of phytoplankton to variations in the light regimewas studied during the VULCAN and ACDA cruises in the Antarctic.Unenriched batch cultures of 1219 days' duration reachedchl concentrations of 1050 µg1 and exhibitedexponential growth rates, with the maximal rate being 0.41 doubl,day1. Ice edge algae exhibited maximum growth rates atphoton flux densities (PFD) of 30100 µE m2S1and the growth rate was reduced by about 30% at 5001000µE m2S1 The chl/C ratio ranged between 0.004and 0.018, with the lowest ratios at PFDs above 500 µEm2S1 chl/C ratios were also below maximum at PFDsbelow 4050 µE m2S1 The C:N:P ratioswere close to the Redfield ratios; the Si/C ratio averaged 0.16(atoms), and the ATP/C ratio averaged from 0.0024 to 0.0050in different culture senes. When thawed after having been frozenfor 10 days, shade-adapted cultures were in a much better conditionthan sun-adapted ones. P versus I data showed that the maximumassimilation number varied from 0.75 to 4.4 µg C (µgchl)1h1. It varied inversely with the chl/C ratio;therefore the maximum carbon turnover rate varied little betweensamples (0.024/0.035 h1). Low biomass communities exhibitedrelatively high values for (the initial slope of P versus Icurves), low values for 1sat (160330 µE m2S1),and they were susceptible to photoinhibition. In contrast, communitiesdominated by Odontella weissflogii exhibited low values for, a high value for Isat (560 µE m2S1 andthey tolerated high PFDs. The photo-adaptational status of thephytoplankton in natural water samples is discussed relativeto the profile of water column stability and mixing processes. 相似文献

Fish-induced changes in zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton and bacterioplankton: a long-term study in shallow hypertrophic Lake Sobygaard 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The impact of fish-mediated changes on the structure and grazingof zooplankton on phytoplankton and bacterioplankton was studiedin Lake Søbygaard during the period 198492 bymeans of in vitro grazing experiments (14C-labelled phytoplankton,3H-labelled bacterioplankton) and model predictions. Measuredzooplankton clearance rates ranged from 025 ml l1h1 on phytoplankton to 033 ml l1 h1on bacterioplankton. The highest rates were found during thesummer when Daphnia spp. were dominant. As the phytoplanktonbiomass was substantially greater than that of bacterioplanktonthroughout the study period, ingestion of phytoplankton was26-fold greater than that of bacterioplankton. Multiple regressionanalysis of the experimental data revealed that Daphnia spp.,Bosmina longirostris and Cyclops vicinus, which were the dominantzooplankton, all contributed significantly to the variationin ingestion of phytoplankton, while only Daphnia spp. contributedsignificantly to that of bacterioplankton. Using estimated meanvalues for clearance and ingestion rates for different zooplankters,we calculated zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton and bacterioplanktonon the basis of monitoring data of lake plankton obtained duringa 9 year study period. Summer mean grazing ranged from 2 to4% of phytoplankton production and 2% of bacterioplankton productionto maxima of 53 and 88%, respectively. The grazing percentagedecreased with increasing density of planktivorous fish caughtin August each year using gill nets and shore-line electrofishing. The changes along a gradient of planktivorous fish abundanceseemed highest for bacterioplankton. Accordingly, the percentagecontribution of bacterioplankton to the total ingestion of thetwo carbon sources decreased from a summer mean value of 8%in Daphnia-dominated communities at lower fish density to 0.71.1%at high fish density, when cyclopoid copepods or Bosmina androtifers dominated. Likewise, the percentage of phytoplanktonproduction channelled through the bacteria varied, it beinghighest (58%) at high fish densities. It is argued thatthe negative impact of zooplankton grazing on bacterioplanktonin shallow lakes is highest at intermediate phosphorus levels, under which conditions Daphnia dominate the zooplankton community. 相似文献

The annual cycle of planktonic ciliates in nearshore waters at Signy Island, Antarctica 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The abundance and biomass of marine planktonic ciliates in BorgeBay, Signy Island, were determined at monthly intervals betweenApril 1990 and June 1991. At least 24 different ciliate taxawere recorded from samples preserved in Lugol's iodine, includingthe tintinnids Codonellopsis balechi, Cymalocylis convallaria,Laackmaniella naviculaefera and Salpingella sp., and the aloricatetaxa Didinium sp. and Mesodinium rubrum. Ciliate abundance andbiomass exhibited a clear seasonal cycle with high values duringthe austral summer and low values in the austral winter. Abundanceranged from 0.3 103l1 in September to 2.3 103l1in January, while biomass ranged from 0.5 µg C l1in October to 12.6 µg C l1 in December. Small ciliatesdominated abundance throughout the year, and biomass duringwinter. Larger ciliates contributed most to biomass during summer.Aloricate ciliates were common throughout the year, while tintinnidscontributed substantially to abundance and biomass only duringsummer. Salpingella sp. was the commonest tintinnid, but C.convallariacontributed most to tintinnid biomass. The seasonal patternof ciliate abundance and biomass matched that of chlorophylla concentration and bacterial biomass, suggesting tight trophiccoupling between ciliates and other components of the pelagicmicrobial community.

Carbon (C) fixation and nitrogen (N) assimilation rates havebeen estimated from 14C and 15N techniques for a 12 month periodin a Scottish sea loch. The maximum rate of nitrogen assimilated(29.92 mmol N m2 day1) was in April at the mostseaward station; similar high rates were experienced duringMay at the other stations. Carbon fixation rates were maximal(4884047 mg C m2day1) at the time of highphytoplankton biomass (maximum 8.3 mg m3 chlorophylla) during May, whilst nitrate concentrations remained >0.7µ.mol l1. C:N assimilation ratios suggest nitrogenlimitation only during the peak of the spring bloom, althoughat times nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium) concentration fellto 0.2 µmol l1 in the following months. The verticalstability of the water column, influenced by tidal and riverineflushing, varied along the axis of the loch, resulting in markeddifferences between sampling stations. Although ammonium waspreferentially assimilated by phytoplankton, >50% of productionwas supported by nitrate uptake and only during the summer monthswas the assimilation of ammonium quantitatively important. 相似文献

The relationships between photosynthesis and photosyntheticphoton flux densities (PPFD, P-l) were studied during a red-tideof Dinophysis norvegica (July-August 1990) in Bedford Basin.Dinophysis norvegica, together with other dinoflagellates suchas Gonyaulax digitate, Ceratium tripos, contributed {small tilde}50%of the phytoplankton biomass that attained a maximum of 16.7µg Chla 1 and 11.93 106 total cells I1.The atomic ratios of carbon to nitrogen for D.norvegica rangedfrom 8.7 to 10.0. The photosynthetic characteristics of fractionatedphytoplankton (>30 µm) dominated by D.norvegica weresimilar to natural bloom assemblages: o (the initial slope ofthe P-l curves) ranged between 0.013 and 0.047 µg C [µgChla]1 h1 [µmol m s1]1the maximum photosynthetic rate, pBm, between 0.66 and 1.85µg C [µghla]1 h1; lk (the photoadaptationindex) from 14 to 69 µ,mol m2 s1. Carbonuptake rates of the isolated cells of D.norvegica (at 780 µmolm2 s1) ranged from 16 to 25 pg C cell1h and were lower than those for C.tripos, G.digitaleand some other dinoflagellates. The variation in carbon uptakerates of isolated cells of D.norvegica corresponded with PBmof the red-tide phytoplankton assemblages in the P-l experiments. Our study showed that D.norvegica, a toxigenic dinoflagellate, was the main contributor to the primary production in the bloom. 相似文献

Light rather than iron controls photosynthate production and allocation in Southern Ocean phytoplankton populations during austral autumn 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

The role of iron and light in controlling photosynthate productionand allocation in phytoplankton populations of the Atlanticsector of the Southern Ocean was investigated in AprilMay1999. The 14C incorporation into five biochemical pools (glucan, amino acids, proteins, lipids and polysaccharides) was measuredduring iron/light perturbation experiments. The diurnal Chla-specific rates of carbon incorporation into these pools didnot change in response to iron addition, yet were decreasedat 20 µmol photons m2 s1, an irradiancecomparable with the one at 2045 m in situ depth. Thissuggests that the low phytoplankton biomass encountered (0.10.6µg Chl a L1) was mainly caused by light limitationin the deep wind mixed layer (>40 m). Regional differencesin Chl a-specific carbon incorporation rates were not foundin spite of differences in phytoplankton species composition:at the Antarctic Polar Front, biomass was dominated by a diatompopulation of Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, whereas smaller cells, including chrysophytes, were relatively more abundant in theAntarctic Circumpolar Current beyond the influence of frontalsystems. Because mixing was often in excess of 100 m in thelatter region, diatom cells may have been unable to fulfil theircharacteristically high Fe demand at low average light conditions, and thus became co-limited by both resources. Using a modelthat describes the 14C incorporation, the consistency was shownbetween the dynamics in the glucan pool in the field experimentsand in laboratory experiments with an Antarctic diatom, Chaetocerosbrevis. The glucan respiration rate was almost twice as highduring the dark phase as during the light phase, which is consistentwith the role of glucan as a reserve supplying energy and carbonskeletons for continued protein synthesis during the night. 相似文献

During the ANTARES 3 cruise in the Indian sector of the SouthernOcean in OctoberNovember 1995, the surface waters ofKerguelen Islands plume, and the surface and deeper waters (3060m) along a transect on 62°E from 48°36'S to the iceedge (58°50'S), were sampled. The phytoplankton communitywas size-fractionated (2 µm) and cell numbers, chlorophyllbiomass and carbon assimilation, through Rubisco and ß-carboxylaseactivities, were characterized. The highest contribution of<2 µm cells to total biomass and total Rubisco activitywas reported in the waters of the Permanent Open Ocean Zone(POOZ) located between 52°S and 55°S along 62°E.In this zone, the picophytoplankton contributed from 26 to 50%of the total chlorophyll (a + b + c) with an average of 0.09± 0.02 µg Chl l1 for <2 µm cells.Picophytoplankton also contributed 36 to 64% of the total Rubiscoactivity, with an average of 0.80 ± 0.30 mg C mg Chla1 h1 for <2 µm cells. The picophytoplanktoncells had a higher ß-carboxylase activity than largercells >2 µm. The mixotrophic capacity of these smallcells is proposed. From sampling stations of the Kerguelen plume,a relationship was observed between the Rubisco activity perpicophytoplankton cell and apparent cell size, which variedwith the sampled water masses. Moreover, a depth-dependent photoperiodicityof Rubisco activity per cell for <2 µm phytoplanktonwas observed during the day/night cycle in the POOZ. In thenear ice zone, a physiological change in picophytoplankton cellsfavouring phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) activitywas reported. A species succession, or an adaptation to unfavourableenvironmental conditions such as low temperature and/or availableirradiance levels, may have provoked this change. The high contributionof picophytoplankton to the total biomass, and its high CO2fixation capacity via autotrophy and mixotrophy, emphasize thestrong regeneration of organic materials in the euphotic layerin the Southern Ocean. 相似文献
