1. Using sampling rates of 8–64 Hz we found clear indications of extensive and high frequency fluctuations of underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) just below the surface (0.016–1.1 m) in some New Zealand water bodies. High variability and flashing occurred down to at least 3 m depth.
2. PAR variability increased under the influence of bright sunshine if wind roughening of the surface took place. Concomitantly, the average PAR levels declined by about 10%. However, even when the surface was shaded, high variability of PAR persisted.
3. Under a calm surface, PAR irradiance followed a log normal distribution. This occurred independently of the presence of direct sunlight. However, when the surface was roughened by wind in sunshine, PAR immediately switched to a Gumbel (extreme value type EV1) distribution.
4. Neither wave action nor wave focusing of incident irradiance would explain the wide range of PAR close to the water surface, although both factors add to the PAR variability.
5. The data indicate that transmittance through the surface is highly variable at the temporal and spatial scales studied, and that the irregularity of the air–water interface is instrumental in bringing about the observed fluctuations of PAR just below the surface.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Diel depth distribution patterns of Ceratium hirundinella were studied during eleven sampling periods, covering the seasonal growth cycle. They were shown to result from short-term periodic or non-periodic external factors, endogenous responses of the alga, and interactions between these.
2. Diel variations in wind stress resulted in the net transport of algae into or out of the sampling position due to lateral water movements. A progressive surface accumulation of Ceratium , leading to a 3-fold increase in cell numbers at the sampling site over a 24 h period, was due to wind-induced upwelling of deeper cells. Near-surface accumulation of Ceratium on a completely overcast afternoon, similar to that associated with migrations, was attributable to advection.
3. Under sufficiently calm conditions, depth-differentiation of Ceratium was regulated by its vertical swimming movements with a diel periodicity. Migration patterns observed in earlier work were confirmed and extended. The alga migrated towards the surface during the daytime and downward during the night; this rhythm had an endogenous component.
4. At high surface illumination, the alga retreated from the surface and formed discrete sub-surface maxima; at low irradiance Ceratium showed positive phototaxis and concentrated near the surface. Under either condition of irradiance Ceratium actively aggregated at depths associated with irradiance levels of about 125–155 μEinsteins m −2 s −1. Downward movement was restricted by anoxic conditions and possibly by thermal/ density gradients. However, given sufficient light penetration, dissolved oxygen and nutrient availability, the thermal density gradient does not apparently eliminate downward movement by Ceratium.  相似文献

The underwater light climate of a shallow estuary located at the southern coast of the Baltic Sea has been investigated, with special emphasis on the spectral irradiance composition and on short-term irradiance fluctuations caused by vertical mixing and wave focussing. The inherent optical properties of the water body were dominated by phytoplankton pigment absorption in the long-wavelength range and by coloured, dissolved organic matter (cDOM) absorption in the wavelength range <500 nm, including ultraviolet-A (UV-A) and ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B). Pronounced particulate scattering combined with the absorption values to give very high attenuation coefficients, especially for the shorter wavelengths of UV-B radiation. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was found to be reduced to 1% of the surface value within 0.8 m in the inner, hypertrophic end of the estuary and within 1.9 m in the outer, eutrophic parts of this system, with corresponding 1% penetration depths for UV-B of 0.13 and 0.31 m. During late winter and early spring, the period when reduced atmospheric ozone concentrations and enhanced UV-B have been reported over northern Europe, the irradiance levels in the water column were greatly reduced, due to strong attenuation by ice cover and overlying snow. cDOM concentration of the water was also found to remain at a high level during these periods, and indeed throughout the year, thus reducing the exposure of organisms to UV-R and PAR still further. A complex irradiance regime was found in this system, with irregular and high amplitude fluctuations caused by wind-induced vertical mixing and wave focussing being superimposed upon the solar-angle-dependent seasonal and daily cycles. The methods used to quantify the short-term fluctuations are described, and their relevance to phytoplankton physiology is discussed. The wave-focussing effect is unique to the aquatic environment, and measurements showed that average subsurface irradiances could be increased by up to 5 times for periods lasting for <1 s. 基于2003年7月12~17日在太湖梅梁湾进行的连续6d原位水下光场观测资料,分析了不同风浪条件下光合有效辐射(PAR)的衰减和真光层深度,探讨了影响水下光合有效辐射的主导因子.结果表明,整个观测期间向下PAR衰减系数为2.63~4.71·m-1(均值为3.63±0.47·m-1),对应的真光层深度为0.98~1.75m(均值为1.29±0.18m),显示1.5m以下深度浮游植物、沉水植物基本上无法获取足够的太阳光能进行光合作用.从小风浪到中风浪、大风浪向下PAR衰减系数分别是2.63、3.72和4.37·m-1,衰减系数分别增加了41%、66%.透明度、PAR衰减系数、真光层深度与悬浮物浓度存在显著性线性相关,并且与悬浮物中无机颗粒物相关性最好,而与叶绿素a、脱镁叶绿素及溶解性有机碳相关性很低.多元逐步线性回归表明,叶绿素a和溶解性有机碳最先被剔除方程,说明在梅梁湾由于风浪扰动引起悬浮物浓度的改变是影响水下光场的主导因素.  相似文献

Summary Spectral downwelling irradiance (400–700 nm) was determined in the ice-covered Lake Hoare located in the dry valleys near McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Full waveband PAR beneath the ice was <44E·m-2·s-1 or <3% of surface downwelling irradiance. Maximum light transmission just beneath the 2.6–4 m ice cover, which contained sediments and air bubbles, occurred between 400–500 nm. In the water column below, attenuation of light by phytoplankton in the 400–500 nm region and between 656–671 nm suggested absorption of light by algal pigments.  相似文献

1. Lake Titicaca is a large, high altitude (3810 m a.s.l.) tropical lake (16°S, 68°W) that lies on the border of Bolivia and Perú, receiving high fluxes of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) throughout the year. Our studies were conducted during September of 1997 with the main objective of studying the impact of solar UVR upon phytoplankton photosynthesis.
2. Water samples were taken daily and incubated in situ (down to 14 m depth) under three radiation treatments to study the relative responses to PAR (Photosynthetic Available Radiation, 400–700 nm), UV-A (320–400 nm), and UV-B (280–320 nm) radiation.
3. Photosynthetic inhibition by UVR in surface waters was about 80%, with UV-A accounting for 60% and UV-B for 20%; the inhibition by high levels of PAR was less than 20%. The inhibition due to UVR decreased with depth so that there were no significant differences between treatments at 8.5 m depth.
4. The amount of inhibition per unit energy received by phytoplankton indicates that even though there was a significant inhibition of photosynthesis due to UVR, species in Lake Titicaca seem to be better adapted than species in high latitude environments.
5. The cellular concentration of UV-absorbing compounds, a possible mechanism of photoadaptation, was low in phytoplanktonic species. However, they were abundant in zooplankton, suggesting a high rate of bioaccumulation through the diet.  相似文献

1. In this study, sediment chlorophyll profiles at twenty littoral stations in three oligo‐mesotrophic lakes were compared to test whether the vertical distribution of chlorophyll is related to site characteristics (light availability, temperature, physical disturbances) and whether these profiles differ between shallow and deep portions of the littoral zone.
2. The magnitude of chlorophyll peaks at the sediment surface did not vary with light intensity. Chlorophyll peaks in the shallow littoral zone had a weak tendency to decrease with increasing effective fetch. The magnitude of chlorophyll peaks at deeper sites was more closely related to water temperature than to substrate slope.
3. High chlorophyll concentrations were measured down to 1–3 cm in the sediments, both at shallow (< 2.5 m) and deep (4–10 m) stations. The depth to which high chlorophyll was found in sediments did not vary with effective fetch or sediment water content, two indices of wave disturbance in the shallow littoral zone, or with substrate slope, an index of sediment stability in the deep littoral zone. Sediment mixing is apparently not related to common indices of physical disturbances.
4. Between 8 and 100% of sediment surface chlorophyll was 'retained' 4–5 cm into the sediments. The proportion of chlorophyll 'retained' in littoral sediments increased with increasing depth, increasing lake productivity (total phosphorus concentration) and increasing lake pH.
5. Among‐core variability (standard error/mean) in chlorophyll concentration at the sediment surface ranged from less than 1% to 33% at different stations and was highest at shallow, exposed sites. These levels of variability are similar to those found in other periphytic communities.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. A taxonomic analysis of 171 phytoplankton samples obtained from Crater Luke, Oregon, between 1985 and 1987 revealed 132 taxa in the upper 250 m of the water column. The greatest temporal variation in taxonomic structure occurred between 40 and 80 m below the water surface, a depth range which corresponded to the zone of maximum primary production.
2. Phytoplankton cell biovolume in the upper 20 m of the water column was relatively high during the summer months, a period when Nitzschia gracilis was dominant in the epilimnion. However, 72% or more of the cell biovolume between 0 and 200 m was distributed below 20 m and, during the winter and spring months, 61% was found below 80 m.
3. Cluster analysis identified a sparse, temporally ubiquitous flora which was modified to various degrees when environmental conditions became favourable for the growth of a few dominant taxa. These surges ot dominance by individual taxa accounted for 2 to 5-fold increases in cell biovolume and generated a pronounced taxonomic discontinuity between the floras in the epilimnion and hypolimnion.
4. While the taxonomic structure of the phytoplankton in the epilimnion corresponded closely with the structure found in a 1978–80 study, the flora below the metalimnion was more diverse and less predictable in species composition than the pattern reported in the earlier study.  相似文献

1. Planktonic ciliates were examined during a spring–summer period (November 1998–April 1999) in the ultraoligotrophic Lake Moreno Oeste (41°5' S and 71°33' W, 758 m a.s.l), which belongs to the Nahuel Huapi System (Patagonia, Argentina). The lake is deep ( Z max=90 m) and warm monomictic.
2. Sampling was performed at a mid-lake station, where vertical profiles of temperature and light were measured in situ , and samples for bacteria and ciliates enumeration were taken throughout the water column.
3. The peritrich Ophrydium naumanni , a freshwater pelagic ciliate with endosymbiotic Chlorella , was the dominant ciliate in the lake.
4.  Ophrydium naumanni and autotrophic picoplankton exhibit a clear coincidence in their vertical distribution ( P  < 0.05), preferring levels at or near the 1% of surface photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) irradiance. Both may have the same light requirements, or the coincidence may reflect a trophic relationship.
5. Dependence on light and prey by O. naumanni were studied using field experiments, in which we analysed ciliate grazing on bacteria, and in laboratory experiments, in which we compared particle uptake under dark and light conditions.
6.  Ophrydium naumanni was able to ingest particles [latex microspheres and fluorescently labelled bacteria (FLB)] in field and laboratory experiment, indicating that it has the potential to affect bacteria population of Lake Moreno Oeste.
7. Ciliate particle ingestion was observed to be dependent on light availability because under dark conditions, the ingestion was lowered ( P  < 0.05).  相似文献

1. This study presents a new approach to modelling subsurface irradiance using concepts from survival and failure time analysis. The model applies a modified Weibull distribution function to predict downwelling irradiance. Data sets from forty-seven Norwegian sites show extremely high coefficients of determination, up to 99.99%, when analysed by the Weibull model.
2. The uncritical use of a single k d value to model underwater light conditions is likely to result in poor estimates of received irradiance. This error may amount to several hundred per cent. The practice of force-fitting linear least-squares regressions to log-transformed irradiance data inevitably leads to highly biased estimates of the true fraction of incident irradiance entering the water.
3. Wave effects causing fluctuations of subsurface irradiance are modelled with synthetic data and compared with field observations. Fluctuations of surface elevation by waves produce skewed frequency distributions of the underwater light field. The result of these effects, which are to reduce the accuracy of estimated model parameters, can be largely eliminated by carefully designing field procedures used for the acquisition of subsurface light data.  相似文献

Effects of seston on ultraviolet attenuation in Lake Biwa   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
We examined the attenuation of underwater ultraviolet (UV) radiation and photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) in Lake Biwa, Japan, at offshore and inshore sites and under contrasting stratification and mixing regimes. There were large spatial differences in the water column transparency to both wavebands, despite little change in concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The 1% of surface irradiance depth varied from 0.3 to 2.7 m at 305 nm, from 0.8 to 6.3 m at 380 nm, and from 2.3 to 12.8 m for PAR. Both PAR and UV transparency declined abruptly in the South Basin of the lake when a typhoon caused the resuspension of sediments. The water column ratio of UV to PAR increased by 30% at all stations over the course of a 3-week sampling period associated with the general increase in phytoplankton concentrations. At several sites, the diffuse attenuation coefficient for UV radiation deviated substantially from that predicted from UV-DOC models. A significantly positive linear relationship was found between UV attenuation (K d determined with a profiling UV radiometer) and the beam attenuation coefficient at 660 nm as measured by transmissometer. These results indicate that scattering and absorption by particulate matter can reduce UV transparency to below that inferred from DOC concentrations, and that current UV-exposure models should be modified to incorporate this effect. 1. We surveyed eighty-five lakes located in the Adirondack Mountain Region of New York State, U.S.A., to characterize the attenuation of photosynthetically active (PAR) and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in relation to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and pH. Attenuation of PAR was quantified in situ . Attenuation was also inferred by measuring the light absorption of filtered lake water samples at wavelengths (300, 340 and 440 nm) representing UV-B, UV-A and PAR.
2. Substantial variation in transparency was observed among lakes in this region. Attenuation depths ( z 1%) for PAR ranged from 0.5 to greater than 20 m, while inferred values for UV-B and UV-A ranged from a few centimetres to > 5 m. Median values of UV-A penetration (0.75 m) and UV-B penetration (0.45 m) corresponded to 11% (UV-A) and 6% (UV-B) of lake maximum depth.
3. Much of the variation in PAR and UVR attenuation was explained by differences in lake DOC. Univariate power models based solely on DOC accounted for 85% (PAR), 90% (UV-A) and 91% (UV-B) of the variation in absorption.
4. Attenuation and absorption coefficients were generally lower for recently acidified lakes compared to acidic and circumneutral lakes which have not undergone recent acidification. However, differences among these three groups of lakes were not statistically significant. Our results suggest that the effects of acidification on the optical properties of a regional population of lakes, even in an area experiencing widespread acidification, are relatively subtle in comparison with other factors contributing to inter-lake variability.
5. The presence of near-shore wetlands is probably a key factor influencing regional variability in DOC and light climate among Adirondack lakes. Temporal variability in climatic factors influencing wetland DOC production and export may mask more subtle influences on lake DOC associated with anthropogenic acidification.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The life history, horizontal distribution at the sediment surface and the effect of water flow on the microdistribution of Allogamus auricollis (Pictet, 1834), a case-bearing caddisfly, was investigated in a mountain brook near Lunz, Lower Austria.
2. The average head-width increment per moult was proportionately constant at c . 48%; therefore Dyar's rule was applicable.
3. Allogamus auricollis has a 1-year life cycle with first and second instars most abundant in October. It overwinters primarily as third and fourth instars; pupae were observed in August.
4. Horizontal distribution patterns were investigated by means of bimonthly samples taken along the stream profile. All instars were most abundant near the banks: 86.5% of the total catch 1987–88 were collected 0–1.5 m from the banks.
5. Current speeds were measured at the sites of 2191 larvae (including all instars) and eighty-six pupae. Larvae were most abundant at current speeds of 0–5 cm s−1 (i.e. 86.6% of the total catch 1987–88).
6. Laboratory data on different stages of resistance to drift in A. auricollis (Waringer, 1989) were tested for their application to field conditions. 90% of the total catch 1987–88 preferred areas at the substrate surface where they could remain fully retracted within their cases, unattached, even when the large lateral case surface area was directed towards the water flow. This was also true at times of high discharge where the size of these areas was considerably reduced.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. In a low-speed wind tunnel, male as well as female moths of Hadena bicruris responded to floral odours with positive anemotaxis. Hitherto, such orientation has only been demonstrated for male moths in response to pheromones.
2. H.bicruris had a maximum flight speed of 4.5–5.4ms-1 and stopped its flower visiting at a wind speed of 2.5–2.8 m s-1.
3. Deilephila elpenor had a similar maximum flight speed (4.5— 5.1 ms-1), but it continued visiting flowers up to wind speeds of 3.0–5.0 ms-1.
4. Apart from mechanical resistance during flight and flower visits, wind might have adverse effects on the energy budget and on evaporative water loss.  相似文献

Stratospheric ozone loss in mid-latitudes is expected to increase the ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation at the earth's surface. Impacts of this expected increase will depend on many factors, including the distribution of light in other wavelengths. Measurements of the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and UVB irradiance were made under clear skies at an open field and under the canopy of scattered trees in a suburban area in W. Lafayette, Indiana, USA (latitude 40.5°). Results showed that when there was significant sky view, the UVB penetration into sub-canopy spaces differs greatly from that of PAR. The UVBT canopy (transmittance; irradiance below canopy/irradiance in open) was inversely related to sky view. The UVB irradiance did not vary as greatly between shaded and sunlit areas as did PAR. Analysis of measurements made near a brick wall indicated that the leaf area of a canopy and the brick wall primarily acted to block fractions of the sky radiance and contributed little scattered UVB to the horizontal plant. A model was developed to predict the UVB and PART canopy based on diffuse fraction, sky view, and porosity of the crown(s) through which the beam is penetrating. The model accounted for the UVB and PART canopy to within 0.13 and 0.05 root mean squared error (RMSE), respectively. Analysis of the errors due to model assumptions indicated that care must be taken in describing the sky radiance distribution, the porosity of trees, the penetration of diffuse radiation through porous trees, and the location of sky-obstructing trees and buildings.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. A large reusable limnocorral is described, suitable for use in water bodies with substantial wave action. The clear plastic enclosure is 1 m in diameter, 25m deep, lightweight (∼50 kg), and inexpensive ($350 U.S.A.).
2. The lower portion of the limnocorral is designed to hang motionless below the water surface, while an expandable floating collar section moves freely up and down with any wave action.
3. Two limnocorrals, equipped with removable sedimentation traps at the bottom, were field tested successfully for 6 weeks in Flathead Lake, Montana, withstanding wave heights up to 1m. Chlorophyll levels and profiles of various physical-chemical parameters measured inside the limnocorrals were comparable to Flathead Lake values.
4. Despite their large size, the limnocorrals are relatively easy to transport, install and retrieve.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Water temperatures were recorded at hourly intervals in the gravel of a trout spawning area in a small stony stream at depths of 0–20 cm in 1985–86 and 0– 40 cm in 1987.
2. As depth within gravel increased, the size of the daily fluctuations reduced and their time of occurrence was delayed by about 12 min cm−1' in 1985–86 and about 6 min cm−1 in 1987.
3. From October to February mean temperatures at 20 cm depth were, on average, 0.5°C higher than those at the gravel surface. This reflected elevated daily minima more than it reflected elevated daily maxima.
4. From March to July daily minima were lower and daily maxima were higher in the stream than in the gravel. Consequences were: (a) an appreciable increase in mean daily range at all depths in the gravel during the summer, (b) higher daily means (by an average of about 0.4°C) in the water than in the gravel in May to August.
5. Some implications for the early development of salmonid fish are considered.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Within-lake relations of wave exposure (WE), and substratum softness (cone penetration depth; CPD) and organic content (loss on ignition; LOI), to water depth penetration of the emergent vegetation (DPE) was investigated in seven eutrophic lakes in southern Sweden, ranging in area from 1 to 46km2.
2. There was a positive relationship between WE and DPE within lakes. This relationship, however, only occurred for sites with relatively soft substrata, for which CPD and LOI were negatively related to both WE and DPE.
3. Analysis of aerial photographs revealed that expansion of the emergent vegetation towards open water, or recession from open water, was not related to wave exposure or water depth, except in one lake where expansion mainly occurred at high exposures.
4. For relatively static vegetation on soft substrata, regressions with CPD°.5 explained 62–88% of the within-lake variation of DPE. These regressions did not differ among lakes. Expanding and recessing vegetation were significantly dislocated towards shallower and deeper water, respectively, than predicted from the regression models for static vegetation.
5. Phragmites australis dominated at the lakeward edge of the emergent vegetation, followed in frequency by Typha angustifolia . More broad-leaved species were generally restricted to shallow water and very soft substrata.
6. The results suggest that changes in the distribution of emergent vegetation in moderately wave exposed eutrophic lakes can be predicted largely from substratum character and water depth.  相似文献

In shallow ecosystems, the short temporal variability of available underwater irradiance is considered a major process controlling submerged macrophytes development. Mechanistic models that estimate photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) in shallow ecosystems at very short time scales are needed for use in predicting submerged macrophyte growth and persistence. We coupled a 2D horizontal circulation model with, first, a 1D vertical numerical model of suspended solid (SS) re-suspension, diffusion and settling, and next, with a model of vertical extinction of irradiance, previously validated at the same site. The study site was the Vaccarès lagoon (France) where a large data set of high frequency bottom irradiance and SS concentration were available. SS and irradiance measurements were conducted at a vertical study station, monitored over a 6 month period (from December 1995 to May 1996) characterized by wide-ranging wind velocities (1.5–18 ms−1). In addition, grain-size analyses conducted over the whole lagoon, allowed adaptation of the 1D numerical model to the silt-sized (7 μm) and clay-sized (0.3 μm) fractions that prevail in the local sediment. First, model results showed that about 60% of the variance in bottom irradiance time series can be explained by our deterministic formulations, thus representing the same level of efficiency than those already obtained by a stochastic model previously developed with the same data set. Second, model results showed that the fit of the model to the field data (SS concentrations and bottom irradiance) depended mainly on storm occurrence and season (winter or spring). Finally, model results suggested that the underwater irradiance regime was controlled by seasonal succession of the horizontal circulation of turbid water in the lagoon, with increased solids concentrations in winter, followed by submerged canopy development and decreased solids concentrations in spring.  相似文献
