Zoophthora radicans (Zygomycetes: Entomophthorales), Diadegma semiclausum (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), and Cotesia plutellae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) are all natural enemies of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae). Adult C. plutellae are not susceptible to Z. radicans infection but the pathogen can infect and kill adult D. semiclausum. Infection of adult D. semiclausum prior to exposure to P. xylostella host larvae significantly reduced the number of parasitoid cocoons subsequently developing from the host larvae. Although Z. radicans infection of P. xylostella larvae prior to parasitism by D. semiclausum or C. plutellae always resulted in the death of the immature parasitoids, neither species discriminated between healthy and Z. radicans-infected host larvae in an oviposition choice experiment. However, host larvae recently killed by Z. radicans were always rejected by D. semiclausum but sometimes accepted by C. plutellae. At 20 degrees C, egg to pupa development took 6.7 and 7.8 days for D. semiclausum and C. plutellae, respectively. C. plutellae parasitism significantly increased host instar duration but D. semiclausum parasitism did not. Cadavers of P. xylostella larvae parasitized 1 day prior to fungal infection showed no reduction in Z. radicans conidia yield. However, cadavers of larvae parasitized 3 days prior to fungal infection demonstrated a marked decrease in Z. radicans conidia yield. Z. radicans infection of P. xylostella larvae < or = 4 days after parasitism resulted in 100% parasitoid mortality; thereafter, the reduction in parasitoid cocoon yield decreased as the time between parasitism and initiation of fungal infection increased. The extended duration of the host larval stage induced by C. plutellae parasitism increased the availability of the parasitoid to the pathogen. Estimates of interspecific competition indicated a similar pattern for the interaction between Z. radicans and each species of parasitoid.

Laboratory and greenhouse studies were conducted on Oomyzus sokolowskii Kurdjumov, a parasite of the crucifer pest Plutella xylostella ( L.). O. sokolowskii preferred the 3rd and 4th instar P. xylostella larvae over fresh pupae for parasitization. It is thus a larval parasite. Within the range of 10?C to 35?C, parasitism was positively correlated with temperature. High parasitism at temperatures of 30?C and 35?C indicates that this insect is suitable for the control of P. xylostella in the tropical lowlands. In a no- choice test where only fresh pupae of Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov, another potentially competing larval parasite of P. xylostella, were offered, O. sokolowskii failed to parasitize pupae of C. plutellae. In a choice test where the 4th instar P. xylostella larvae and fresh C. plutellae pupae were offered, O. sokolowskii parasitized only P. xylostella larvae. This parasite, therefore, is not a hyperparasite of P. xylostella. When C. plutellae-ovvposited P. xylostella larvae were offered at intervals, O. sokolowskii, parasitized only freshly oviposited host larvae. The longer the period that elapsed after C. plutellae oviposition of P. xylostella larvae, the lesser was the parasitism of these larvae by O. sokolowski.

In this study we examined interactions between two solitary endoparasitoids, the braconid Chelonus insularis and the ichneumonid Campoletis sonorensis, and a multiple-enveloped nucleopolyhedrovirus infecting Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. We examined whether ovipositing females minimize interference by discriminating amongst hosts and examined the outcome of within-host competition between parasitoid species and between the parasitoids and the virus. The egg–larval parasitoid Ch. insularis did not discriminate between virus-contaminated and uncontaminated S. frugiperda eggs; all S. frugiperda larvae that emerged from surface-contaminated eggs died of viral infection prior to parasitoid emergence. The larval parasitoid C. sonorensis also failed to discriminate between healthy and virus-infected S. frugiperda larvae or between larvae unparasitized or parasitized by Ch. insularis. Host larvae parasitized in the egg stage by Ch. insularis were suitable for the development of C. sonorensis when they were multiparasitized by C. sonorensis as first, second, third, and fourth instars, whereas emergence of Ch. insularis was dramatically reduced (by 85 to 100%) in multiparasitized hosts. Nonspecific host mortality was significantly higher in multiparasitized hosts than in singly parasitized hosts. The development time and sex ratio of C. sonorensis in multiparasitized host larvae were unaffected by the presence of Ch. insularis larval stages. Both Ch. insularis parasitized and nonparasitized larvae of the same instar (second, third, or fourth instars) had a similar quantitative response to a challenge of virus inoculum. All host larvae that ingested a lethal dose of virus were unsuitable for Ch. insularis development. In contrast, C. sonorensis did not survive in hosts that ingested a lethal virus dose immediately after parasitism, but parasitoid survival was possible with a 2-day delay between parasitism and viral infection and the percentage of parasitoid emergence increased significantly as the interval between parasitism and viral infection increased. The development time of C. sonorensis was significantly reduced in virus-infected hosts compared to conspecifics that developed in healthy hosts. C. sonorensis females that oviposited in virus-infected hosts did not transmit the virus to healthy hosts that were parasitized subsequently. Field applications of virus for biocontrol of S. frugiperda may lead to substantial mortality of immature parasitoids, although field experiments have not yet demonstrated such an effect.

Relative effects of parasitism by Microplitis rufiventris on the development of the third instar Spodoptera littoralis (preferable, optimal host) with the development of penultimate (5th) and last (6th) instars (suboptimal hosts) were investigated. Newly molted 6th instar hosts were more acceptable for parasitization by the wasp female than older hosts. In singly parasitized 3rd instar hosts, 82.0 +/- 3.9% of the parasitoid eggs developed to full-grown instar wasp larvae. However, parasitoid eggs deposited singly in 73.9 +/- 3.3% of 5th and 100% of 6th instar hosts failed to develop. Superparasitization in the 3rd instar hosts reduced the production of pseudoparasitized larvae and, conversely, all parasitized hosts yielded viable parasitoid offspring. In suboptimal hosts, the development interaction between the parasitoid and its host larvae was highly influenced by the age of hosts at parasitism, load of deposited eggs, and other parasitoid factors. The latter factors, e.g., mainly calyx fluid particles, might be involved in establishing parasitoid eggs in the suboptimal hosts. In the last two host instars, superparasitization significantly increased the number of parasitoid larvae successfully reaching their final instar. Variation in host quality, e.g., physiological status, might be attributed, in part, to the partial breakdown of the solitary habit observed in the earlier instars. More parasitoid eggs developed to mature parasitoid larvae in hosts superparasitized as 6th instar than parasitoid eggs laid in 5th instar hosts. Superparasitization significantly lengthened the developmental period of 5th and 6th host instars and inhibited their development to the pupal stage. Studying parasitoid development in suboptimal instars of its habitual host provided physiological insight, as shown here. The results may have implication for biological control and in vitro mass rearing programs with solitary parasitoids.

Interspecific competition between an introduced parasitoid species aimed at controlling a herbivorous pest species and a native parasitoid parasitising the same host may influence the success of classical biological control programmes. In Kenya, interspecific competition between an introduced and a local parasitoid on two diamondback moth populations (DBM, Plutella xylostella) was investigated on two different host plants. We tested simultaneous and delayed competition of the local parasitoid Diadegma mollipla Holmgren and its exotic congenus D. semiclausum Hellen on a newly aquired DBM host plant (snowpea) in the laboratory. Under simultaneous competition, D. mollipla produced more progeny than D. semiclausum on snowpea. A head start of D. Mollipla, of four and eight hours before its congenus was introduced, resulted in a similar number of progeny of both species. In delayed competition (time intervals of 24 h, 48 h and 72 h), progeny production was similar for both parasitoids when the time interval was 24 h, irrespective of which species parasitized first. More progeny was produced by the species which attacked first, when the time interval was greater than 24 h, although it was only significant at 72 h. Competitive abilites of both parasitoids on the new host plant differed largely between laboratory and semi-field conditions. The influence of two host plants (snowpea and cabbage) on competition was studied in the greenhouse with different host and parasitoid densities. Parasitism levels of D. semiclausum were significantly higher than those of D. mollipla, regardless of host plant, host and parasitoid densities, but progeny production of D. mollipla on snowpea was still slightly higher than on cabbage. As compared to the confinement of parasitoids and larvae to small containers, D. mollipla parasitized very few larvae in the cages. Competitive ability of the two parasitoid species tested was influenced both by the density of the searching females and by parameters related to either the host plant and/or the herbivorous hosts.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine host selection by Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov when larvae of its host, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus), fed on Chinese cabbage, Brassica campestris L. ssp. pekinensis and those fed on common cabbage, Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata were provided simultaneously, and to investigate the roles of plant and host volatiles in mediating host selection. When C. plutellae were provided with equal numbers of host larvae on plants of the two species in one arena, the parasitoid parasitized 4- to 15-fold more host larvae on Chinese cabbage than on common cabbage. This preference changed little with host density. However, an experience of searching coupled with an oviposition in a host larva on a leaf of the less-preferred plant, common cabbage, significantly increased the preference for parasitizing host larvae on this plant and resulted in twice as many host larvae parasitized on this plant than on Chinese cabbage. Dual choice tests with a Y-tube olfactometer showed that plant volatiles from Chinese cabbage were more attractive to female C. plutellae than those from common cabbage when plants of both species were either intact or infested. In parallel to the increased parasitism on common cabbage following experience, oviposition in a host larva on this less-preferred plant significantly increased the response to volatiles emanating from that plant. These results indicate that host plants may strongly influence the foraging behaviour of C. plutellae, but their differential attractiveness to the parasitoid may be altered by experience of the parasitoid.

Abstract: Changes in population densities of the apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea (Klug) and its parasitoid Lathrolestes ensator (Brauns) were monitored in 15 apple orchards for a period of up to 4 years. The parasitoid species was found in all orchards except one, and was more numerous in plantings on sandier soils. Post‐bloom insecticide applications against other pests, and carbaryl for fruit thinning, often decimated both host and parasitoid in integrated pest management orchards. In organic orchards, where synthetic pesticides are banned, and Quassia is the only remedy against sawfly, the pest is more problematic. The low levels of parasitism in all organic orchards, except one, were possibly due to the application of wettable sulphur during the parasitoid flight period. The sawfly usually recovers more quickly than its parasitoid when chemical control is discontinued, because propagation of L. ensator is limited in various ways. The parasitoid is time limited, because suitable second instar host larvae are rarely available for more than a week on a single apple variety. Moreover, parasitism levels stay moderate because the parasitoid females do not avoid superparasitism. Finally, relatively more sawflies than parasitoids emerge after 10 months underground, because the incidence of prolonged diapause is more elevated in L. ensator than in the sawfly. It is suggested that both the high incidence of prolonged diapause and the inability to avoid superparasitism are useful in reducing the risk of local extinction. Elevated sawfly attack in a single early apple variety would reduce exploitation of suitable host larvae in other nearby varieties, in as far as the parasitoid is not able to distinguish fruitlets with accessible second instar host larvae from those with inaccessible older larvae. Although the former are available for a limited time, the latter may keep the parasitoids from moving to the less abundant second instar larvae in late(r) varieties. Reduction of elevated host density in such an early variety by a properly timed application of a short‐lived pesticide, such as Quassia, increases parasitism levels proportionally, and is expected to promote parasitoid movement to host larvae in other varieties nearby.

Abstract: Lathrolestes ensator (Brauns) was the only parasitoid species reared from larvae of apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea (Klug) collected in Dutch orchards. The life history parameters of apple sawfly and its parasitoid L. ensator were investigated in field and semi‐field experiments. Usually, the adult parasitoids emerge in synchrony with the preferred host stage, the second instar sawfly larvae. Parasitoid females carried 120–175 eggs, but never laid more than half this number. The mortality of sawfly eggs and larvae varied from 75 and 99%. The eggs and mining larvae are most vulnerable, as the older larvae survive for 90% on average. Three factors at least determine how many of the descending larvae become adult sawfly or parasitoid next spring. The failure of descending larvae to construct a cocoon varied from 7 to 31% and was highest in clay soil. Probably a similar mechanical hindrance prohibited more emerging adults, of both sawfly and L. ensator, from attaining the surface in heavier soils next spring. Relatively more sawfly prepupae than parasitoids died in the cocoon stage, from fungus disease or other causes, but more parasitoids than hosts stayed in prolonged diapause. Mainly due to this last factor, the overall result was a decrease of the parasitoid : host ratio during the first season underground. A life table based on survival rates during various life stages yields a net reproductive rate of up to 2.4 daughters per female sawfly. It indicates that 60% of the sawfly larvae need to be parasitized to stop population growth, or correspondingly less when more than 75% of the host eggs and young larvae are killed by predators or other causes.

We investigated interspecific competition between Campoletis chlorideae Uchida (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) and Microplitis mediator (Haliday) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in their host, the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) under laboratory conditions. Cotton bollworm larvae were allowed to be parasitized by both wasp species simultaneously or sequentially at different time intervals. When host larvae were parasitized simultaneously by both parasitoids, the majority of the cocoons produced were of M. mediator. When host larvae were parasitized initially by M. mediator followed by C. chlorideae at 12 or 24 h, parasitoids emerging from the multiparasitized hosts were mainly M. mediator. In contrast, when host larvae were parasitized initially by C. chlorideae, followed by M. mediator 12 or 24 h later, parasitoids emerging from the multiparasitized hosts were mainly C. chlorideae. Dissections of host larvae at various time intervals after parasitization by the two parasitoids showed that first instars of M. mediator could physically attack the larvae of C. chlorideae, but not the eggs of C. chlorideae. When a host was parasitized by both wasp species sequentially, more host larvae died and the number of wasp offspring was significantly reduced compared to a host parasitized by only one wasp. Conversely, in simultaneous multiparasitism, the host mortality and wasp offspring production were not significantly different from those parasitized by single wasp species.

Abstract.  1. Little is known about underlying mechanisms by which plants indirectly affect parasitism success in hymenopteran endoparasitoids. The hypothesis that host-plant effects can challenge the innate immune system of an insect host was experimentally tested in this study using a model tritrophic, crucifer – lepidopteran [ Plutella xylostella (L.)] – parasitoid [ Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov)], system.
2. The effects of host-plant suitability on herbivore performance and parasitism were examined. The bottom-up effect of plant suitability on host-parasitoid immune responses was then evaluated using measures of cellular and humoral effectors.
3. Host-plant quality showed a significant effect on the encapsulation response of P. xylostella to first instar but not to second instar parasitoid larvae. Encapsulation was never sufficient to prevent parasitoid emergence.
4. Poor host-plant suitability suppressed phenoloxidase activity in the absence of the parasitoid. The suppressive effect of C. plutellae on phenoloxidase activity was much greater and no plant effects were detectable after insects had been parasitized.
5. Despite strong plant effects on parasitism, those on immune effectors of the host were transitory or overwhelmed by the effect of the parasitoid.
6. These results demonstrated that plant-mediated variation in parasitism success by C. plutellae were not as a result of plant nutritional status or other attributes affecting the immune function of P. xylostella , nor to host-plant effects on superparasitism.
7. In these experiments, P. xylostella was a fully permissive host to C. plutellae and host-plant-mediated effects on the innate immune response appeared to play no part in parasitoid survival within hosts.

The effects of superparasitism on the size, rate of development, progeny production, sex ratio and percentage parasitism of the parasitoid Pediobius furvus (Gah.) and the number of parasitized hosts producing mature parasitoids were investigated. High parasitoid egg densities in hosts were obtained using two host densities (1 and 2) and three arbitrary parasitoid densities (1, 2 and 5) under two exposure times (12 and 24 h). Superparasitism in P. furvus resulted in a reduction in the number of adults that matured and a reduction in the size and preponderance of male production. Dissections of the parasitized host pupae of the stem borer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) showed no combat among developing wasps. Immature supernumeraries were eliminated by starvation and/or suffocation. The results showed that P. furvus larvae are not harmed by surplus food material in their hosts and that the female parasitoid preferred to lay more eggs into unparasitized than into parasitized host pupae.

Larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Ypeunomutidae), cause severe economic damage to cabbage, Brassica oleracea L. variety capitata (Brassicaceae) and related vegetables in Thailand. Overuse of broad-spectrum insecticides for diamondback moth control is a serious problem and has obscured the contributions of indigenous parasitoids. Our objectives were to identify indigenous diamondback moth parasitoids in northern Thailand and to assess their potential for natural control. Six parasitoid species were reared from diamondback moth larvae and pupae collected in 1990 and in 2003-2004. These included the larval parasitoid Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov (Braconidae), a larval-pupal parasitoid Macromalon orientale Kerrich (Ichneumonidae), and pupal parasitoids Diadromus collaris Gravenhorst (Ichneumonidae) and Brachymeria excarinata Gahan (Chalcididae). Single specimens of Isotima sp. Forster (Ichneumonidae) and Brachymeria lasus Walker (Chalcididae) also were reared from diamondback moth hosts. C. plutellae was the dominant larval parasitoid and was often reared from host larvae collected from fields sprayed regularly with insecticides; parasitism ranged from 14 to 78%. Average parasitism by M. orientale was only 0.5-6%. Parasitism of host pupae by D. collaris ranged from 9 to 31%, whereas B. excarinata pupal parasitism ranged from 9 to 25%. An integrated pest management (IPM) protocol using simple presence-absence sampling for lepidopterous larvae and the exclusive use of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) or neem resulted in the highest yields of undamaged cabbage compared with a control or weekly sprays of cypermethrin (local farmer practice). IPM programs focused on conservation of local diamondback moth parasitoids and on greater implementation of biological control will help alleviate growing public concerns regarding the effects of pesticides on vegetable growers and consumers.

In natural populations of insect herbivores, genetic differentiation is likely to occur due to variation in host plant utilization and selection by the local community of organisms with which they interact. In parasitoids, engaging in intimate associations with their host during immature development, local variation may exist in host quality for parasitoid development. We compared the development of a gregarious endoparasitoid, Cotesia glomerata L. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), collected in The Netherlands, in three strains and three caterpillar instars (L1–L3) of its main host, Pieris brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae). Hosts had been collected in The Netherlands and France, and were reared in the laboratory for one generation. We also used an established Dutch laboratory strain that had not been exposed to parasitoids for at least 24 generations. Parasitoid survival to adulthood was inversely correlated with host instar at parasitism. Adult parasitoid body mass was largest when hosts were parasitized as L1 and smallest when hosts were parasitized as L3, whereas egg‐to‐adult development time was quickest on L3 hosts and slowest on L1 hosts. Higher survival and faster development of C. glomerata on French L2 hosts also showed that there is variation in host‐instar‐related suitability. Many L2 and most L3 caterpillars that were parasitized exhibited signs of pathogen infection and perished within a few days of parasitism, whereas this never happened when hosts were parasitized as L1 or in non‐parasitized control caterpillars. Our results reveal that, irrespective of the host strain, L1 hosts are optimally synchronized with C. glomerata development. By contrast, the high precocious mortality of L3 larvae may be due to stress‐induced regulation by the parasitoid in order to ‘force’ its developmental program into synchrony with the developing parasitoid larvae. Our results underscore a potentially important role played by pathogens in mediating herbivore–parasitoid interactions that are host‐instar‐dependent in their expression.

Interspecific host discrimination by adults, and larval competition among the endoparasitoidsMicroplitis croceipes (Cresson),Microplitis demolitor Wilkinson,Cotesia kazak (Telenga) andHyposoter didymator (Thunberg) were investigated usingHeliothis virescens (F.) as the host. In ovipositional choice tests, the mean number of encounters and ovipositions for unparasitized hosts was not significantly different from the mean number of encounters and ovipositions for parasitized hosts for each treatment combination (P>0.05). Thus, none of the parasitoid species discriminated between host larvae recently parasitized once by a female of another species und unparasitized hosts. However, in all but two cases, females did discriminate between unparasitized hosts and hosts in which an early first instar of the first-attacking species was developing.Cotesia kazak andH. didymator did not discriminate between unparasitized hosts and hosts parasitized by an early first instar ofM. demolitor. Larval competition among these parasitoid species was studied for three time intervals between the first and second species parasitization: 1) second species attack immediately (5–15 sec) after the first; 2) second species attack 24 h after the first; and 3) second species attack 48 h after the first. Time until egg eclosion was shortest forM. demolitor, thenC. kazak, thenM. croceipes, and longest forH. didymator. When the second parasitoid species attacked a host immediately after the first species, the species in which egg eclosion occurred first was the victor more frequently, except whenM. demolitor competed withC. kazak andH. didymator. With a 24 h delay between the first and second species to attack, the older first instar from the first parasitization usually outcompeted the younger first instar from the second attack. A first instar from the second species to attack generally outcompeted the second instar of the first species when the second parasitization had been delayed 48 h. Competiors were eliminated mainly by physical attack, butC. kazak andM. croceipes apparently also killedH. didymator eggs by physiological processes.
