The effects of different applied NO3 concentrations onextension growth and final length and area of leaves 1–4of five cereals and six pasture grasses of temperate originwere examined. Increased applied NO3 in the range 0.1–0.5.0mol m–3 caused decreased duration of growth but increasedgrowth rate and final length of leaves 2–4 of the cerealsAvena saliva, Hordeum vulgare, Secale cereale, x Triticosecaleand Triticum aestivum. For all cereals, increased NO3resulted in increased area of leaves 1–4. Pasture grasseswere supplied either 0.5 or 50 mol m–3 NO3. Increasedapplied NO3 (0.5–5.0 mol m–3) resulted indecreased duration of growth and increased growth rate and finalarea of leaves 1–4 of Bromus wiltdenowii, leaves 2–4ofFestuca arundinaceae and leaves 3 and 4 of Lolium muitiflorum. In addition, length of leaves 3 and 4 of B. witidenowii increasedwith increased NO3. Plants of the C4 sedge Cyperus longus L. were grown at 10, 20and 30 °C. An asymptotic growth curve, the Richards function, was fitted to growth data for successive leaves. The mean rateof leaf appearance was a linear function of temperature with0.014 leaves appearing per day for every 1 °C increase intemperature. The instantaneous relative rate of leaf extensionshowed a marked ontogenetic drift which was most rapid at 30°C and slowest at 10 °C. The mean absolute extensionrate for foliage had a temperature coefficient of 0.16 cm d–1° C–1 in the range from 10 to 30 °C. The durationof leaf growth was independent of leaf number at 10 and 20 °Cbut increased linearly with leaf number at 30 °C. The smalldifferences in relative growth rate at the three temperaturesresulted in large differences in foliage area produced at theend of a 30 d growth period. The final foliage areas at 20 and10 °C were 51 and 9% respectively of that at 30 °C. Cyperus longus, temperature, leaf growth, Richards function, growth analysis  相似文献

The rate parameters R1, R2, I/LI and I/t0.5, which characterizethe growth in area of successive main-stem leaves, probablyall have the same temperature response. Temperature thereforeonly operates on the time scale. Water stress reduces both therelative growth rate and the advance of developmental age, thelatter however to a lesser extent than the former. The effectof root restriction is explained as resulting from mineral shortage. The single-gene mutation afila in pea (Pisum sativum L.) resultsin the replacement of proximal leaflets with branched tendrils, thereby reducing leaf area. This study investigated whethertheafila line could adjust biomass partitioning when exposedto varying nutrient regimes, to compensate for reduced leafarea, compared with wild-type plants. Wild-type and afila near-isogeniclines were grown in solution culture with nitrate-N added toinitially N-starved seedlings at relative addition rates (RN)of 0.06, 0.12, 0.15 and 0.50 d-1. The relative growth rate (RW)of the whole plants closely matched RNat 0.06 and 0.12 d-1,but higher RNresulted in a slightly higher growth rate. At agiven RN, the wild-type line had lower plant nitrogen statusthan the afila line. RWof the roots of the afila line was lessthan RWof the roots of the wild-type at the three higher ratesof N supply despite a greater accumulation of N in the rootsof the afila plants. Consequently, plant nitrogen productivity(growth rate per unit nitrogen) was lower for afila. Dry matterallocation was strongly influenced by nitrogen status, but nodifferences in shoot–root dry matter allocation were foundbetween wild-type and afila with the same plant N status. Theseresults imply that decreased leaf area as a result of the single-genemutation afila affects dry matter allocation, but only accordingto its effect on the nitrogen status. Clonal plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L ), whollydependent on N2 fixation, were grown for 6 weeks in controlledenvironments providing either (C680 regime) 23/18 °C day/nighttemperatures and a CO2, concentration of 680 µmol mol–1,or (C340 regime) 20/15 °C day/night temperatures and a CO2,concentration of 340 µmol mol–1 During the firsthalf of the experimental period the C680 plants grew fasterthan their C340 counterparts so that by week 3 they were twicethe weight this 2 1 superiority in weight persisted until theend of the experiment The faster initial growth of the C680plants was based on an approx 70 % increase in leaf numbersand an approx 30 % increase in their individual area Initially, specific leaf area (cm2 g–1 leaf) was lower in C680 thanin C340 leaves but became similar in the latter half of theexperiment Shoot organ weights, including petioles and stolons, reflected the C680 plant's better growth in terms of photosyntheticsurface Throughout, C680 plants invested less of their weightin root than C340 plants and this disparity increased with timeAcetylene reduction assays showed that nitrogenase activityper unit nodule weight was the same in both C680 and C340 plantsBoth groups of plants invested about the same fraction of totalweight in nodules Nitrogen contents of plant tissues were similarirrespective of growth regime, but C680 expanded leaves containedslightly less nitrogen and their stolons slightly more nitrogenthan their C340 counterparts However, C680 leaves containedmore non-structural carbohydrate Young, unshaded C680 leavespossessed larger palisade cells, packed more tightly withinthe leaf, than equivalent C340 leaves The reason for the C680regime's loss of superiority in relative growth rate duringthe second half of the experiment was not clear, but more accumulationof non-structural carbohydrate, constriction of root growthand increased self-shading appear to be the most likely causes Trifolium repens, white clover, elevated CO2, elevated temperature, growth, N2 fixation, leaf structure  相似文献

Lolium temulentum seedlings were grown on a nutrient mediumcontaining NH4NO2 at 0, 0·1, 0·5, 1·0 and4·3 mmoll–1 as the sole N source. Relative andabsolute extension rates, maximal leaf size, duration of extensiongrowth, rate of leaf appearance and plastochron index were determinedfrom the parameters of Richards functions fitted to lengthsof laminae measured at intervals after sowing. The final lengthof leaf I was relatively insensitive to N whereas mean relativeextension rate was increased and duration of growth decreasedwith increasing NH4NO2 concentration. Leaves 2 and 3 enlargedprogressively with N at concentrations up to 1·0 mmoll–1but were unresponsive thereafter. There was no significant correlationbetween final length and mean relative extension rate for leaves1 to 3. Leaves 4 to 6 continued to show increasing length beyond1·0 mmoll–1 N and final length was significantlycorrelated with mean relative extension rate. Increasing N increasedthe rate of leaf appearance by decreasing the duration of leafextension and plastochron. These results are discussed in relationto the control of leaf and N turnover. At low nitrogen (N) supply, it is well known that rye has ahigher biomass production than wheat. This study investigateswhether these species differences can be explained by differencesin dry matter and nitrogen partitioning, specific leaf area, specific root length and net assimilation rate, which determineboth N acquisition and carbon assimilation during vegetativegrowth. Winter rye (Secale cereale L.), wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) and triticale (X Triticosecale) were grown in solution cultureat relative addition rates (RN) of nitrate-N supply rangingfrom 0.03–0.18 d-1and at non-limiting N supply under controlledconditions. The relative growth rate (RW) was closely equalto RNin the range 0.03–0.15 d-1. The maximalRW at non-limitingnitrate nutrition was approx. 0.18 d-1. The biomass allocationto the roots showed a considerable plasticity but did not differbetween species. There were no interspecific differences ineither net assimilation rate or specific leaf area. Higher accumulationof N in the plant, despite the same relative growth rate atnon-limiting N supplies, suggests that rye has a greater abilityto accumulate reserves of nitrogen. Rye had a higher specificroot length over a wide range of sub-optimal N rates than wheat, especially at extreme N deficiency (RN=0.03–0.06 d-1).Triticale had a similar specific root length as that of wheatbut had the ability to accumulate N to the same amount as ryeunder conditions of free N access. It is concluded that thebetter adaptation of rye to low N availability compared to wheatis related to higher specific root length in rye. Additionally, the greater ability to accumulate nitrogen under conditionsof free N access for rye and triticale compared to wheat maybe useful for subsequent N utilization during plant growth. In general, species differences are explained by growth componentsresponsible for nitrogen acquisition rather than carbon assimilation.Copyright 1999 Annals of Botany Company Growth analysis, nitrogen, nitrogen productivity, partitioning, specific root length, Secale cereale L.,Triticum aestivum L., X Triticosecale, winter rye, winter wheat, winter triticale.  相似文献

Single, seed-grown plants of ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv.Melle) were grown for 49 d from the early seedling stage ingrowth cabinets at a day/night temperature of 20/15 C, witha 12 h photoperiod, and a CO2 concentration of either 340 or680µI 1–1 CO2. Following complete acclimation tothe environmental regimes, leaf and whole plant CO2 effluxesand influxes were measured using infra-red gas analysis techniques.Elevated CO2 increased rates of photosynthesis of young, fullyexpanded leaves by 35–46% and of whole plants by morethan 50%. For both leaves and whole plants acclimation to 680µI–1 CO2 reduced rates of photosynthesis in bothCO2 regimes, compared with plants acclimated to 340µll–1. There was no significant effect of CO2 regime onrespiration rates of either leaves or whole plants, althoughleaves developed in elevated CO2 exhibited generally lower ratesthan those developed in 340µI I–1 CO2. Initially the seedling plants in elevated CO2 grew faster thantheir counterparts in 340µI I–1 CO2, but this effectquickly petered out and final plant weights differed by onlyc. 10%. Since the total area of expanded and unexpanded laminaewas unaffected by CO2 regime, specific leaf area was persistently13–40% lower in elevated CO2 while, similarly, root/shootratio was also reduced throughout the experiment. Elevated CO2reduced tissue nitrogen contents of expanded leaves, but hadno effect on the nitrogen contents of unexpanded leaves, sheathsor roots. The lack of a pronounced effect of elevated CO2 on plant growthwas primarily due to the fact that CO2 concentration did notinfluence tiller (branch) numbers. In the absence of an effecton tiller numbers, any possible weight increment was restrictedto the c. 2.5 leaves of each tiller. The reason for the lackof an effect on tillering is not known. The possible role in drought resistance played by sclerophyllywas studied in the Mediterranean oaks Quercus ilex, Q. suberand Q. pubescens. Studies were conducted on leaves at 30, 50and 80% of their final surface area, as well as on mature leavesof the current year's growth in June and September and on 1-year-oldleaves. Leaves of different ages of the three species showed quite differentdegrees of sclerophylly (DS). Q. ilex leaves reached the definitiveDS of 1.75 g dm–2 during leaf expansion; Q. pubescensleaves hardened at the end of their expansion, with a finalDS of 0.93 g dm–2; Q. suber showed the lowest DS of 0.76g dm–2. Leaf conductance to water vapour (g1) of 1-year-old leaves ofQ. ilex, measured in the field, showed a duration of the g1peak values about twice that of the other two species. The minimumleaf relative water content (RWC), however, was near the samein the three species, indicating that water loss was recoveredpartly by Q. ilex leaves. This was apparently due to the higherbulk modulus of elasticity (  相似文献

When grown in pots and well-watered, the relative growth ratesof the above ground parts of two species of Moricandia (M. arvensis,an intermediate C3–C4 species, and M. moricandioides,a C3 species) were inferior to those of two cultivated Brassicaspecies (B. campestris and B. napus). The Moricandia specieshad thicker leaves (greater d.wt per unit leaf area) with morechlorophyll than the Brassica species and had slightly greaterrates of photosynthesis per unit leaf area at an irradiance(400–700 nm) of 2000 µmol quanta m–2 s –1.Leaves of M. arvensis, known to have a CO2 compensation pointbetween that of C3 and C4 species, had a lower ratio of theintercellular to atmospheric partial pressure of CO2 (C1/Ca)and a greater instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE) thanthose of M. moricandioides and the Brassica species. Growth of oil palm seedlings over the period 2–31 weeksafter planting in the nursery was studied using growth-analysistechniques. Curves of the Gompertz type were fitted to the basicdata of plant dry weight and leaf area, and from the equationsof the fitted curves, net assimilation rate (EA), relative growth-rate(Rw), and relative leaf growth-rate (RA) were calculated. The low values of EA (0.16-0–31 g/dm2/week) and Rw (1.4–2.2per cent./per day) confirm earlier work on oil palm seedlings. The time trend of increasing EA and RW over the period studiedis associated with steadily increasing solar radiation overthe second half of the period. Leaf-area ratio is markedly affected by transplanting, and asthis unbalance of leaf area/total dry weight has been shownto be associated with low rates of EA in seedlings, it is suggestedthat the low values of EA and RW in the first half of the experimentalperiod are due to the effect of transplanting. These findings are discussed in relation to current nurserypractice.  相似文献

We studied the course of early leaf area expansion and specificleaf area (SLA) in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) and wheat (Triticumaestivum L.) genotypes and tested whether air temperature explainsdifferences in these courses within different environments.Such knowledge can be used to improve crop growth modelling. The relative rate of leaf area expansion (RL) of potato andwheat decreased with thermal time, but was nearly linear upto a leaf area index (L) of 1.0. TheRL (L < 1; mean: 17.9x 10-3°C-1 d-1) of potato showed an interaction betweengenotype and environment, and varied with year. TheRL (L <1; mean: 7.1 x 10-3°C-1 d-1) of winter wheat was lower thanthat of spring wheat (mean: 10.9 x 10-3°C-1 d-1), and bothvaried with year. SLAof potato increased nearly linearly withthermal time from 5 to 15 m2 kg-1at 50% emergence, to 20 to25 m2 kg-1at 155°Cd, and then decreased slightly. The SLAofboth winter and spring wheat began at 16 to 23 m2 kg-1and inmost cases increased slightly with thermal time. In potato, regression parameters of SLAwith thermal time were affectedby environment (management conditions and year) and genotype;in wheat they were affected by environment (year and site).Treatment effects on RLof potato were not correlated with thoseon SLA , and were only partly correlated for wheat. Thereforewe conclude that the early foliar expansion of potato is associatedwith a strong increase in SLA , and not so for wheat. For bothcrops the course of early leaf area expansion and ofSLA withair temperature is not robust over environments and genotypes. The consequences of these results for modelling are discussed.Copyright 2000 Annals of Botany Company Triticum aestivum, spring wheat, winter wheat, Solanum tuberosum, leaf area expansion, specific leaf area, early growth, genotype, environment, modelling  相似文献

Net photosynthesis rate (Pn), stomatal conductance to CO2 andresidual conductance to CO2 were measured in the last six leaves(the sixth or flag leaf and the preceding five leaves) of Triticumaestivum L. cv. Kolibri plants grown in Mediterranean conditions.Recently fully expanded leaves of well-watered plants were alwaysused. Measurements were made at saturating photosynthetic photonflux density, and at ambient CO2 and O2 levels. The specificleaf area, total organic nitrogen content, some anatomical characteristics, and other parameters, were measured on the same leaves usedfor gas exchange experiments. A progressive xeromorphic adaptation in the leaf structure wasobserved with increasing leaf insertion levels. Furthermore, mesophyll cell volume per unit leaf area (Vmes/A) decreasedby 52·6% from the first leaf to the flag leaf. Mesophyllcell area per unit leaf area also decreased, but only by 24·5%.However, nitrogen content per unit mesophyll cell volume increasedby 50·6% from the first leaf to the flag leaf. This increasecould be associated to an observed higher number of chloroplastcross-sections per mm2 of mesophyll cell cross-sectional areain the flag leaf: values of 23000 in the first leaf and 48000in the flag leaf were obtained. Pn per unit leaf area remainedfairly constant at the different insertion levels: values of33·83±0·93 mg dm–2 h–1 and32·32±1·61 mg dm–2 h–1 wereobtained for the first leaf and the flag leaf, respectively.Residual conductance, however, decreased by 18·2% fromthe first leaf to the flag leaf. Stomatal conductance increasedby 41·7%. The steadiness in Pn per unit leaf area across the leaf insertionlevels could be mainly accounted for by an opposing effect betweena decrease in Vmes/A and a more closely packed arrangement ofphotosynthetic apparatus. Adaptative significance of structuralchanges with increasing leaf insertion levels and the steadinessin Pn per unit leaf area was studied. Key words: Photosynthesis, structure, wheat  相似文献

Upland grasslands are a major component of natural vegetationwithin the UK. Such grasslands support slow growing relativelystable plant communities. The response of native montane grassspecies to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrationshas received little attention to date. Of such studies, mosthave only focused on short-term (days to weeks) responses, oftenunder favourable controlled environment conditions. In thisstudy Agrostis caplllaris L.5, Festuca vivipara L. and Poa alpinaL. were grown under semi-natural conditions in outdoor open-topchambers at either ambient (340µmol mol–1) or elevated(680µmol mol–1) concentrations of atmospheric carbondioxide (CO2 for periods from 79 to 189 d, with a nutrient availabilitysimilar to that of montane Agrostis-Fescue grassland in Snowdonia,N. Wales. Whole plant dry weight was increased for A. capillarisand P. alpina, but decreased for F. vivipara, at elevated CO2.Major components of relative growth rate (RGR) contributingto this change at elevated CO2 were transient changes in specificleaf area (SLA) and leaf area ratio (LAR). Despite changes ingrowth rate at 680 µmol mol–1 CO2, partitioningof dry weight between shoot and root in plants of A. capillarisand P. alpina was unaltered. There was a significant decreasein shoot relative to root growth at elevated CO2 in F. viviparawhich also showed marked discoloration of the leaves and increasedsenescence of the foliage. Lolium temulentum plants were grown at 20 °C, under an 8-hdaylength, in a controlled-environment chamber, and the kineticsof leaf expansion were observed by measuring the movement ofan optical grid attached to the fourth leaf. The leaf emerged23–24 d after sowing and was fully expanded 9–10d later. Extension rate was maximal between the second and fifthdays after emergence and declined markedly thereafter. Duringthe rapid growth phase the rate of elongation exhibited a distinctdiurnal rhythm, fluctuating between 1.9 to 2.3 mm h–1in the light period, and 1.3 to 1.7 mm h–1 in the dark.A circadian oscillation with a period of about 27 h was observedin leaves elongating in continuous darkness. When plants weretransferred to 5 °C soon after emergence of the fourth leafthere was an immediate reduction in rate of growth to about22 per cent of the rate at 20 °C: the Q10 for the mean elongationrate in the range 20–5 °C was 3.7. When plants weretransferred from 20 to 2 °C at fourth leaf emergence, meanextension rate declined to less than 5 per cent, correspondingto a Q10 in the range 5–2 °C of more than 300. Furthermore, growth at 2 °C was confined almost entirely to the darkphase of the photoperiod cycle. The responsive tissue was shownto be a small area of expanding leafless than 1.5 cm above theshoot apex and the possible mechanisms underlying low temperatureeffects in this region are discussed. The net assimilation rate (EA), relative growth-rate (Rw), andleaf-area ratio (FA) were measured for rape (Brassica napus),sunflower (Hetianthus annuus), and maize (Zea mays) at varioustimes of year in an arid climate, using young plants grown widelyspaced on nutrient culture. Multiple regression analysis accountedfor 90–95 per cent of the variation in EA and RW in termsof two climatic variables: mean temperature and radiation receipt. EA rose linearly with radiation in all three species; increasein EA with temperature was greatest in maize and least (notsignificant) in rape. RWrose with radiation and temperature, the latter being the more important variable especially in coolweather; a temperature optimum was shown at 24° C in rape.FA rose with increase in temperature or decrease in radiation;its variation was due to change in leaf area/leaf weight ratherthan in leaf weight/plant weight. Multiple regression analyses can lead to faulty interpretationif the independent variables are correlated (as are climaticvariables in nature), but conclusions can be checked by controlled-environmentstudies in which climatic factors are not correlated. The presentconclusions are supported by such studies. The regression equations, coupled with average weather records, indicate seasonal cycles of growth parameters. EA is maximalnear midsummer and minimal near midwinter, following the radiationcycle. Maxima and minima in RW are about a month later, becauseRW is affected by the temperature cycle and this lags behindthe radiation cycle. FA is maximal in autumn and minimal inspring. EA is highest where radiation receipts near 750 cal cm–2day–1 coincide with high temperatures. This combinationoccurs only in clear midsummer weather at low latitudes, andis maintained over long periods only in arid regions. The fact that EA rose linearly with radiation suggests thatleaf water deficits arising under high radiation had littleeffect on EA and that saturating levels of light were very high.  相似文献

The effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations on theecophysiological responses (gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence,Rubisco activity, leaf area development) as well as on the growthand biomass production of two poplar clones (i.e. Populus trichocarpax P. deltoides clone Beaupré and P. x euramericana cloneRobusta) were examined under open top chamber conditions. Theelevated CO2 treatment (ambient + 350 µmol mol-1) stimulatedabove-ground biomass of clones Robusta and Beaupré afterthe first growing season by 55 and 38%, respectively. This increasedbiomass production under elevated CO2 was associated with asignificant increase in plant height, the latter being the resultof enhanced internode elongation rather than an increased productionof leaves or internodes. Both an increased leaf area index (LAI)and a stimulated net photosynthesis per unit leaf contributedto a significantly higher stem biomass per unit leaf area, andthus to the increased above-ground biomass production underthe elevated CO2 concentrations in both clones. The larger LAIwas caused by a larger individual leaf size and leaf growthrate; the number of leaves was not altered by the elevated CO2treatment. The higher net leaf photosynthesis was the resultof an increase in the photochemical (maximal chlorophyll fluorescenceFm and photochemical efficiency Fv/Fm) as well as in the biochemical(increased Rubisco activity) process capacities. No significantdifferences were found in dark respiration rate, neither betweenclones nor between treatments, but specific leaf area significantlydecreased under elevated CO2 conditions.Copyright 1995, 1999Academic Press Biomass, chlorophyll a fluorescence, elevated CO2, growth, Populus, poplar, photosynthesis, respiration, Rubisco  相似文献

Populations of Cenchrus ciliaris differ significantly in relativegrowth-rate (R), net assimilation rate (E), and leaf-area ratio(F). Differences in R were related to differences in E ratherthan in F. The populations also differed in the rate of apparentphotosynthesis of individual leaves as measured by infra-redgas analysis. Warburg and l4CO2 techniques. Temperature andlight-response measurements revealed optimum temperature forphotosynthesis of 35 °C and the rate in most populationscontinued to increase up to the highest levels of irradianceemployed (200 W m2). The relative order of the populations wassimilar in all methods of analysis, but there was no relationshipevident between leaf photosynthesis and E derived from growthanalysis. The activity of the enzyme PEP carboxylase, expressedin terms of unit leaf area, was correlated with photosyntheticrate of the leaf. Activities of PEP carboxylase and of proteinsynthesis in vitro expressed on a basis of soluble protein contentwere correlated with E, but no such relationship was found forthe enzymes acid phosphatase and alanine--ketoglutarate aminotransferase.  相似文献

Agrostis capillaris L.5, Festuca vivipara L. and Poaalpina L.were grown in outdoor open-top chambers at either ambient (340 3µmol mol–1) or elevated (6804µmol mol–1)concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) for periodsfrom 79–189 d. Photosynthetic capacity of source leaves of plants grown atboth ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations was measured atsaturating light and 5% CO2. Dark respiration of leaves wasmeasured using a liquid phase oxygen electrode with the buffersolution in equilibrium with air (21% O2, 0.034% CO2). Photo-syntheticcapacity of P. alpina was reduced by growth at 680 µmolmol–1 CO2 by 105 d, and that of F. vivipara was reducedat 65 d and 189 d after CO2 enrichment began, suggesting down-regulationor acclimation. Dark respiration of successive leaf blades ofall three species was unaltered by growth at 680 relative to340 µmol mol–1 CO2. In F. vivipara, leaf respirationrate was markedly lower at 189 d than at either 0 d or 65 d,irrespective of growth CO2 concentration. There was a significantlylower total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) concentrationin the leaf blades and leaf sheaths of A. capillaris grown at680µmol mol–1 CO2. TNC of roots of A. capillariswas unaltered by CO2 treatment. TNC concentration was increasedin both leaves and sheaths of P. alpina and F. vivipara after105 d and 65 d growth, respectively. A 4-fold increase in thewater-soluble fraction (fructan) in P. alpina and in all carbohydratefractions in F. vivipara accounted for the increased TNC content. In F. vivipara the relationship between leaf photosyn-theticcapacity and leaf carbohydrate concentration was such that therewas a strong positive correlation between photosynthetic capacityand total leaf N concentration (expressed on a per unit structuraldry weight basis), and total nitrogen concentration of successivemature leaves reduced with time. Multiple regression of leafphotosynthetic capacity upon leaf nitrogen and carbohydrateconcentrations further confirmed that leaf photosynthetic capacitywas mainly determined by leaf N concentration. In P. alpina, leaf photosynthetic capacity was mainly determined by leaf CHOconcentration. Thus there is evidence for down-regulation ofphotosynthetic capacity in P. alpina resulting from increasedcarbohydrate accumulation in source leaves. Leaf dark respiration and total N concentration were positivelycorrelated in P. alpina and F. vivipara. Leaf dark respirationand soluble carbohydrate concentration of source leaves werepositively correlated in A. capillaris. Changes in source leafphotosynthetic capacity and carbohydrate concentration of plantsgrown at ambient or elevated CO2 are discussed in relation toplant growth, nutrient relations and availability of sinks forcarbon.
