Abstract

Little attention has been paid to the combined use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) and steel slag (SS) for ameliorating heavy metal polluted soils. A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted to study the effects of SS and AMF?Funneliformis mosseae (Fm), Glomus versiforme (Gv) and Rhizophagus intraradices (Ri) on plant growth and Cd, Pb uptake by maize grown in soils added with 5?mg Cd kg?1 and 300?mg Pb kg?1 soil. The combined usage of AMF and SS (AMF?+?SS) promoted maize growth, and Gv?+?SS had the most obvious effect. Meanwhile, single SS addition and AMF?+?SS decreased Cd, Pb concentrations in maize, and the greater reductions were found in combined utilization, and the lowest Cd, Pb concentrations of maize appeared in Gv?+?SS. Single SS amendment and AMF?+?SS enhanced soil pH and decreased soil diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable Cd, Pb concentrations. Furthermore, alone and combined usage of AMF and SS increased contents of soil total glomalin. Our research indicated a synergistic effect between AMF and SS on enhancing plant growth and reducing Cd, Pb accumulation in maize, and Gv?+?SS exerted the most pronounced effect. This work suggests that AMF inoculation in combination with SS addition may be a potential method for not only phytostabilization of Pb-Cd-contaminated soil but maize safety production.  相似文献

Abstract

This study assessed the effects of Pb (0, 200, 500, 1000?mg kg?1) and Cd (0, 5, 15, 30, 50?mg kg?1) on photosynthesis in Amaranthus spinosus (A. spinosus), as well as the potential for phytoremediation by pot-culture experiment. Exposure to Pb/Cd produced a concentration-dependent decrease in biomass and all photosynthesis parameters, except for non-photochemical quenching, which increased with the metal concentration. The metals accumulated more in roots compared to shoots. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of Pb was <1 in shoots at all Pb levels, whereas the BCF was <1 in roots at all but the lowest concentration of Pb. Roots extracted Cd from soil at all treatments. The translocation factor of Cd was larger than that of Pb suggesting that Cd is more mobile than Pb in A. spinosus. Amaranthus spinosus displays a high tolerance for both Pb and Cd with regards to growth and photochemical efficiency, but it is more sensitive to Cd than Pb. Amaranthus spinosus accumulates Pb and Cd primarily in the roots and Cd is more bioconcentrated and translocated in comparison to Pb. This investigation shows that A. spinosus has good potential for phytoremediation of soils contaminated by low levels of Cd and Pb.  相似文献

Abstract

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the potential influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), Funneliformis mosseae and Diversispora spurcum, on the growth and nutrient (P and S) and heavy metal (HMs) (Pb, Zn, and Cd) content of bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] in a lead-zinc mine wasteland. The D. spurcum inoculation significantly increased the bermudagrass growth, whereas the F. mosseae inoculation did not. The AMF inoculation significantly increased the soil pH and uptake of P, S, and HMs by bermudagrass, decreased the contents of available Pb and Zn in soils and Pb in shoots, reduced the translocation factor (TF) and translocation capacity factor (TF') of Pb and Cd in bermudagrass and increased the TF and TF' of Zn in bermudagrass. A significant negative correlation was found between pH and available HMs in soil, whereas a significant positive correlation was noted between the HMs content and nutrient content in bermudagrass shoots. Experiment results provide evidence of the potential role of AMF in improving bermudagrass performance for the vegetation restoration of metalliferous mine wastelands.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in phytoremediation of lead (Pb)-contaminated soil by vetiver grass. Experiment was a factorial arranged in a completely randomized design. Factors included four Pb levels (50, 200, 400, and 800 mg kg?1) as Pb (NO3)2, AM fungi at three levels (non mycorrhizal (NM) control, Rhizophagus intraradices, Glomus versiforme). Shoot and root dry weights (SDW and RDW) decreased as Pb levels increased. Mycorrhizal inoculation increased SDW and RDW compared to NM control. With mycorrhizal inoculation and increasing Pb levels, Pb uptake of shoot and root increased compared to those of NM control. Root colonization increased with mycorrhizal inoculation but decreased as Pb levels increased. Phosphorus concentration and uptake in shoot of plants inoculated with AM fungi was significantly higher than NM control at 200 and 800 mg Pb kg?1. The Fe concentration, Fe and Mn uptake of shoot in plants inoculated with Rhizophagus intraradices in all levels of Pb were significantly higher than NM control. Mycorrhizal inoculation increased Pb extraction, uptake and translocation efficiencies. Lead translocation factor decreased as Pb levels increased; however inoculation with AM fungi increased Pb translocation.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can perform key roles in ecosystem functioning through improving host nutrient acquisition. Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for plant growth, however, anthropogenic N loading (e.g. crop fertilization and deposition from combustion sources) is increasing so that N now threatens ecosystem sustainability around the world by causing terrestrial and aquatic eutrophication and acidification. It is important to better understand the capacity of AMF to directly uptake N from soils and transfer it to host plants because this process may increase N recycling and retention within ecosystems. In addition to understanding the role of AMF in the N cycle in the present day it is important to understand how AMF function may change as global change proceeds. Currently the net effects of N enrichment and elevated temperature predicted with global change on AMF are unknown. In this study, we examined the effects of N enrichment by simulated N‐deposition loading, elevated temperatures expected by future global changes and their interactions on growth and AMF‐mediated N acquisition of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum var. Alamo), an important species for biofuel production. Switchgrass plants were grown in microcosm units that divided mycorrhizal roots from AMF hyphae and organic residues enriched with 15N by compartments separated by an air gap to reduce N diffusion. While AMF did not enhance switchgrass biomass, mycorrhizas significantly increased 15N in shoots and total shoot N. Neither N enrichment nor elevated temperatures influenced this mycorrhizal‐mediated N uptake and transfer. Results from this study can aid in developing sustainable bioethanol and switchgrass production practices that are less reliant on synthetic fertilizers and more dependent on internal N recycling from AMF.  相似文献

Phytostabilization aims to reduce environmental and health risks arising from contaminated soil. To be economically attractive, plants used for phytostabilization should produce valuable biomass. This study investigated the biomass production and metal allocation to foliage and wood of willow (Salix viminalis L.), poplar (Populus monviso), birch (Betula pendula), and oak (Quercus robur) on five different soils contaminated with trace elements (TE), with varying high concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb as well as an uncontaminated control soil. In the treatment soils, the biomass was reduced in all species except oak. There was a significant negative correlation between biomass and foliar Cd and Zn concentrations, reaching up to 15 mg Cd kg?1 and 2000 mg Zn kg ?1 in willow leaves. Lead was the only TE with higher wood than foliage concentrations. The highest Pb accumulation occurred in birch with up to 135 mg kg ?1 in wood and 78 mg kg ?1 in foliage. Birch could be suitable for phytostabilization of soils with high Cd and Zn but low Pb concentrations, while poplars and willows could be used to stabilise soils with high Cu and Pb and low Zn and Cd concentrations.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can promote plant growth and reduce plant uptake of heavy metals. Phosphorus (P) fertilization can affect this relationship. We investigated maize (Zea mays L.) uptake of heavy metals after soil AMF inoculation and P fertilization. Maize biomass, glomaline and chlorophyll contents and uptake of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb have been determined in a soil inoculated with AMF (Glomus aggregatum, or Glomus intraradices) and treated with 30 or 60 µg P-K2HPO4 g?1 soil. Consistent variations were found between the two mycorrhizal species with respect to the colonization and glomalin content. Shoot dry weight and chlorophyll content were higher with G. intraradices than with G. aggregatum inoculation. The biomass was highest with 30 µg P g?1 soil. Shoot concentrations of Cd, Pb and Zn decreased with G. aggregatum inoculation, but that of Cd and Pb increased with G. intraradices inoculation. Addition of P fertilizers decreased Cd and Zn concentrations in the shoot. AMF with P fertilization greatly reduced maize content of heavy metals. The results provide that native AMF with a moderate application rate of P fertilizers can be exploited in polluted soils to minimize the heavy metals uptake and to increase maize growth.  相似文献

Heavy metal-polluted soil was collected from the Pulang copper mine in Shangri-La City, Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The effects of fertilizer (organic and inorganic) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) growth, root morphology, mineral nutrition and cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) contents were investigated by pot experiments. The results showed that both fertilizer and AMF significantly ameliorated the root morphology and mineral nutrition, reduced the Cd and Pb contents, and promoted the growth of ryegrass. Among all treatments, the combined application of organic–inorganic compound fertilizer with AMF had the highest effect, resulting in increases in root length, surface area and branch number by 2.3, 1.1, and 3.9 times, respectively; an 88% increase in plant biomass; a nitrogen content increase of 2.3 and 1.2 times, and phosphorus content increase of 62% and 68% in shoots and roots, respectively was also recorded as well as decreases in Cd content by 34% and 62% and Pb content by 47% and 34% in shoots and roots, respectively. Two-factor analysis showed that both fertilizer and AMF significantly promoted ryegrass growth (plant height, biomass, chlorophyll content, root length, nitrogen and phosphorus content) and reduced the Cd and Pb contents in roots, and there was a synergistic effect between them. Moreover, the nitrogen and phosphorus contents were very significantly positively correlated with the shoot and root biomasses but very significantly negatively correlated with the Cd and Pb contents of ryegrass. Thus, the application of fertilizer and AMF synergistically improved ryegrass growth on polluted soils in the copper mining area.  相似文献

Abstract

Using biodegradable chelators to assist in phytoextraction may be an effective approach to enhance the heavy-metal remediation efficiencies of plants. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS), citric acid (CA), and oxalic acid (OA) on the growth of the arsenic (As) hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata L., its arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) uptake and accumulation, and soil microbial responses in multi-metal(loid)-contaminated soil. The addition of 2.5-mmol kg?1 OA (OA-2.5) produced 26.7 and 14.9% more rhizoid and shoot biomass, respectively compared with the control, while EDDS and CA treatments significantly inhibited plant growth. The As accumulation in plants after the OA-2.5 treatment increased by 44.2% and the Cd and Pb accumulation in plants after a 1-mmol kg?1 EDDS treatment increased by 24.5 and 19.6%, respectively. Soil urease enzyme activities in OA-2.5 treatment were significantly greater than those in the control and other chelator treatments (p?<?0.05). A PCR–denatured gradient gel electrophoresis analysis revealed that with the addition of EDDS, CA and OA enhanced soil microbial diversity. It was concluded that the addition of OA-2.5 was suitable for facilitating phytoremediation of soil As and did not have negative effects on the microbial community.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can improve plant tolerance to several abiotic stresses, including heavy metals, drought or salinity exposure. However, the role of AMF in alleviation of soil cadmium (Cd)-induced toxicity to plants is still largely unknown. In this study, Cd speciation in soil and subcellular distribution of Cd were used to characterize the roles of application AM fungi in the alleviation of Cd toxicity in alfalfa plants. Our results showed that the addition of Glomus mosseae in Cd contaminated soil (10 mg/Kg) significantly increased soil pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and organic matter in rhizosphere soil with Medicago truncatula L., and then account for significantly decreased contents of exchangeable and carbonate-bounded Cd speciation in rhizosphere soil, indicating alleviation of plant toxicity by reduction of bioavailable fractions of Cd. Although there is no significant difference found in Cd accumulation by roots and shoots respectively between Cd and AM-Cd treatments, more portion of Cd was recorded compartmentalization in cell wall fraction of both root and shoot in treatment of Cd with AM application, indicating alleviation of Cd toxicity to plant cell. Herein, application of AM fungi in Cd treatments performed to inhibit the appearance of Cd toxicity symptoms, including the improvement of leaf electrolyte leakage, root elongation, seedling growth and biomass. This information provides a clearer understanding of detoxification strategy of AM fungi on Cd behavior with development and stabilization of soil structure and subcellular distribution of plant.  相似文献

Pot culture experiments were established to determine the effects of colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Glomus mosseae and G. sp) on maize (Zea mays L.) grown in Pb, Zn, and Cd complex contaminated soils. AMF and non-AMF inoculated maize were grown in sterilized substrates and subjected to different soil heavy metal (Pb, Zn, Cd) concentrations. The root and shoot biomasses of inoculated maize were significantly higher than those of non-inoculated maize. Pb, Zn, and Cd concentrations in roots were significantly higher than those in shoots in both the inoculated and non-inoculated maize, indicating the heavy metals mostly accumulated in the roots of maize. The translocation rates of Pb, Zn, and Cd from roots to shoots were not significantly difference between inoculated and non-inoculated maize. However, at high soil heavy metal concentrations, Pb, Zn, and Cd in the shoots and Pb in the roots of inoculated maize were significantly reduced by about 50% compared to the non-inoculated maize. These results indicated that AMF could promote maize growth and decrease the uptake of these heavy metals at higher soil concentrations, thus protecting their hosts from the toxicity of heavy metals in Pb, Zn, and Cd complex contaminated soils.  相似文献

In the present study, the phytoremedation potential along with growth, physiological and biochemical response of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) was assessed under heavy metal(loid) (HM) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) amendment. Effect of AMF on uptake and accumulation of metal(loid)s was assessed and accumulation characteristics were expressed in terms of bioabsorption coefficient (BAC), bioconcentration factor (BCF), translocation factor (TLF) and transfer factor (TF). Results showed that AMF-inoculated plants showed not only a better growth, chlorophyll content, strengthened non-enzymatic and enzymatic defense mechanism, but also accumulated higher concentration of metal(loid)s. The correlation between biochemical and physiological parameters was significant at 0.01 level. A significant difference (p ≤ 0.001) in antioxidant enzyme activity was found on increasing metal(loid) dose and application of AMF. The accumulation of Cd and Pb in edible part exceeded the chronic reference dose stated by USEPA. The target hazard quotient (THQ) was >1 for Cd and Pb, whereas <1 for As. The study shows that tomato has good potential as Cd and Pb phytoremediator, hence must not be consumed when grown on Cd or Pb contaminated sites.  相似文献

We investigated uptake of Cd by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) maize inoculated with Glomus mosseae from a low-P sandy calcareous soil in two glasshouse experiments. Plants grew in pots containing two compartments, one for root and hyphal growth and one for hyphal development only. Three levels of Cd (0, 25 and 100 mg kg–1) and two of P (20 and 60 mg kg–1) were applied separately to the two compartments to assess hyphal uptake of Cd. Neither Cd nor P addition inhibited root colonization by the AM fungus, but Cd depressed plant biomass. Mycorrhizal colonization, P addition and increasing added Cd level led to lower Cd partitioning to the shoots. Plant P uptake was enhanced by mycorrhizal colonization at all Cd levels studied. When Cd was added to the plant compartment and P to the hyphal compartment, plant biomass increased with AM colonization and the mycorrhizal effect was more pronounced with increasing Cd addition. When P was added to the plant compartment and Cd to the hyphal compartment, plant biomass was little affected by AM colonization, but shoot Cd uptake was increased by colonization at the low Cd addition rate (25 mg kg–1) and lowered at the higher Cd rate (100 mg kg–1) but with no difference in root Cd uptake. These effects may have been due to immobilization of Cd by the fungal mycelium or effects of the AM fungus on rhizosphere physicochemical conditions and are discussed in relation to possible phytostabilization of contaminated sites by AM plants.  相似文献

The effect of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) consortium conformed by (Glomus intraradices, Glomus albidum, Glomus diaphanum, and Glomus claroideum) on plant growth and absorption of Pb, Fe, Na, Ca, and 32P in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) plants was evaluated. AMF-plants and controls were grown in a substrate amended with powdered Pb slag at proportions of 0, 10, 20, and 30% v/v equivalent to total Pb contents of 117; 5,337; 13,659, and 19,913 mg Pb kg?1 substrate, respectively. Mycorrhizal root colonization values were 70, 94, 98, and 90%, for barley and 91, 97, 95, and 97%, for sunflower. AMF inoculum had positive repercussions on plant development of both crops. Mycorrhizal barley absorbed more Pb (40.4 mg Pb kg?1) shoot dry weight than non-colonized controls (26.5 mg Pb kg?1) when treated with a high Pb slag dosage. This increase was higher in roots than shoots (650.0 and 511.5 mg Pb kg?1 root dry weight, respectively). A similar pattern was found in sunflower. Plants with AMF absorbed equal or lower amounts of Fe, Na and Ca than controls. H. vulgare absorbed more total P (1.0%) than H. annuus (0.9%). The arbuscular mycorrizal consortium enhanced Pb extraction by plants.  相似文献

Aims

We tested the hypothesis that adult plants can help their conspecific (i.e. an organism belonging to the same species as another organism) seedlings develop symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), thereby increasing seedling nutrient uptake and growth in a saline soil.

Methods

Using the halophytic shrub Tamarix chinensis as a model plant, we conducted two field experiments and a greenhouse experiment. Field experiment 1 assessed the importance of below-ground effects of adult neighbor. Field experiment 2 determined the involvement of AMF in neighbor effects by applying fungicide benomyl to obtain AMF suppressed treatment. The greenhouse experiment tested whether neighbor effects were influenced by AMF hyphal connection between adults and seedlings by using 25 μm and 0.45 μm nylon mesh to allow and prevent the AMF hyphae pass through respectively.

Results

Adult neighbor increased shoot biomass and nutrient of target seedlings and the below-ground effects mediated by AMF was facilitative under high soil salinity level. Field experiment 1 showed that adult neighbors reduced soil salinity, increased soil organic matter, and provided AMF spores for target seedlings via whole plant effects or below-ground effects alone. Field experiment 2 showed that shoot biomass and AMF colonization of target seedlings were greater with an adult neighbor when AMF were not suppressed treatment than in AMF were suppressed or there were no neighbors. In the greenhouse experiment, adult neighbors with AMF hyphal connection increased shoot biomass, AMF colonization, and 15N content of target seedlings under the high salinity level.

Conclusion

The results support our hypothesis that adult plants can promote the growth and nutrient uptake of their conspecific seedlings in a saline soil by helping them to develop AMF symbiosis. These findings highlight the roles of adult neighbor plants on seedlings regeneration through rhizospheric symbiosis in stressful environments.

Aims

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi associate with the majority of terrestrial plants, influencing their growth, nutrient uptake and defence chemistry. Consequently, AM fungi can significantly impact plant-herbivore interactions, yet surprisingly few studies have investigated how AM fungi affect plant responses to root herbivores. This study aimed to investigate how AM fungi affect plant tolerance mechanisms to belowground herbivory.

Methods

We examined how AM fungi affect plant (Saccharum spp. hybrid) growth, nutrient dynamics and secondary chemistry (phenolics) in response to attack from a root-feeding insect (Dermolepida albohirtum).

Results

Root herbivory reduced root mass by almost 27%. In response, plants augmented investment in aboveground biomass by 25%, as well as increasing carbon concentrations. The AM fungi increased aboveground biomass, phosphorus and carbon. Meanwhile, root herbivory increased foliar phenolics by 31% in mycorrhizal plants, and increased arbuscular colonisation of roots by 75% overall. AM fungi also decreased herbivore performance, potentially via increasing root silicon concentrations.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that AM fungi may be able to augment plant tolerance to root herbivory via resource allocation aboveground and, at the same time, enhance plant root resistance by increasing root silicon. The ability of AM fungi to facilitate resource allocation aboveground in this way may be a more widespread strategy for plants to cope with belowground herbivory.

Interactions between weeds and crops often occur by resource competition or allelopathy. However, it is still unknown how local weed species influence artificially introduced switchgrass. In this study, four experiments were conducted to evaluate the inhibitory effects of redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus) and crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis) on germination and growth of the lowland tetraploid switchgrass cultivar ‘Alamo’ (Panicum virgatum cv. Alamo). Switchgrass germination was significantly inhibited in Petri dishes, with 48.1% and 33.9% inhibitions on germination rate by redroot pigweed and crabgrass root aqueous extracts, respectively, at 0.1 g mL?1 concentration. Significant inhibitory effects on switchgrass seedling biomass were observed at 5:5 ratio with redroot pigweed and crabgrass in glass jars, with 61.6% and 53.4% inhibitions on plant biomass, respectively. Under the same root segregation, redroot pigweed had a stronger inhibitory effect on switchgrass seedling growth than crabgrass. Growth of transplanted switchgrass seedlings was significantly inhibited by local weeds in the field, with 46.2% and 11.7% inhibitions on shoot biomass during the first and second growing seasons, respectively. However, no significant growth reduction in switchgrass was detected in the third growing season. These findings further our understanding of weed–crop interactions and could help develop weeds management strategies with ecological security.

ABSTRACT Using a compartmentalized treatment technique, the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF; Acaulospora scrobiculata) on arsenic (As) uptake and translocation in Brachiaria decumbens. Treatments consisted of a factorial arrangement of three As doses (0, 50, and 100 mg kg?1) and the presence/absence of AMF inoculates. In the absence of AMF, B. decumbens did not show As accumulation, indicating the probable presence of tolerance mechanism via As exclusion by the roots. B. decumbens plants showed high AMF colonization levels, especially in the arsenic treatments, with AMF improving shoot and root growth independent of As concentrations. Arsenic accumulation occurred only with AMF inoculation. Phosphorous uptake was reduced in B. decumbens roots in the presence of arsenic with and without inoculation of AMF. Results suggest that B. decumbens can be used in phytoremediation procedures when inoculated with A. scrobiculata, although pasture formation should be strictly avoided in contaminated sites.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess EDTA-assisted Pb and Cd phytoextraction potential of locally grown Pelargonium hortorum and Pelargonium zonale. Plants were exposed to different levels of Pb (0–1500?mg kg?1) and Cd (0–150?mg kg?1) in the absence or presence of EDTA (0–5?mmol kg?1). P. hortorum and P. zonale accumulated 50.9% and 42.2% higher amount of Pb in shoots at 1500?mg kg?1 Pb upon addition of 5?mmol kg?1 EDTA. Plant dry biomass decreased 46.8% and 64.3% for P. hortorum and P. zonale, respectively at the combination of 1500?mg kg?1 Pb and 5?mmol kg?1 EDTA. In Cd and EDTA-treated groups, P. hortorum and P. zonale accumulated 2.7 and 1.6-folds more Cd in shoots at 4 and 2?mmol kg?1 EDTA, respectively, in 150?mg Cd kg?1 treatment. Plant dry biomass of P. hortorum and P. zonale was reduced by 46.3% and 71.3%, respectively, in soil having 150?mg Cd kg?1 combined with 5?mmol kg?1 EDTA. Translocation factor and enrichment factor of both plant cultivars at all treatment levels were >1. Overall, the performance of P. hortorum was better than that of P. zonale for EDTA-assisted phytoextraction of Pb and Cd.  相似文献
