On 23 February 1979 Sir Robert Falla collapsed and died at his home in Eastbourne. He was 77. Immunological studies of Fe-containing superoxide dismutase (FeSOD) and glutamine synthetase (GS) have established a close relationship betweenOceanospirillum linum (the type species of the genus),O. beijerinckii, Alteromonas communis, A. vaga, and two unnamed species of marine bacteria (groups H-1 and I-1). The four latter species have, consequently, been assigned to the genusOceanospirillum asO. commune comb. nov.,O. vagum comb. nov.,O. kriegii sp. nov. (group H-1; type strain 197, ATCC 27133), andO. jannaschii sp. nov. (group I-1; type strain 207, ATCC 27135). The Irish plant which, following Mitten, has commonly been referred to as Plagiochila ambagiosa Mitt. is specifically different from the type of P. ambagiosa, and is therefore described as Plagiochila atlantica F. A previously undescribed species of Euglena, E. myxocylindracea, sp. nov., is described from soil in a garden and in a while pine woods in Pike County, Pa. In addition to the, type, an organism (No. 457) in the Culture Collection of Algae. Indiana University, hitherto designated E. viridis var. terricola. is transferred to E. myxocylindracea as var. terricola. Differences such as the usual absence of an emergent flagellum, or the presence of an extremely short one (ca. 3.5–4 μ), and the dominance of a palmelloid state in a variety of liquid and solid culture media in which the cells secrete dichotomously branching slimy cylinders distinguish the new species from E. viridis.  相似文献

Two new taxa of Minuartia L. (Caryophyllaceae) from Turkey, Minuartia aksoyi M. Koç & Hamzao?lu sp. nov. and Minuartia buschiana Schischk. subsp. artvinica M. Koç & Hamzao?lu subsp. nov. are described and illustrated. Their taxonomic positions are discussed and they are compared with allied taxa. Ten Bifidobacterium strains, i.e., 6T3, 64T4, 79T10, 80T4, 81T8, 82T1, 82T10, 82T18, 82T24, and 82T25, were isolated from mantled guereza (Colobus guereza), Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abeli), silvery marmoset (Mico argentatus), golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia), pied tamarin (Saguinus bicolor), and common pheasant (Phaisanus colchinus). Cells are Gram-positive, non-motile, non-sporulating, facultative anaerobic, and fructose 6-phosphate phosphoketolase-positive. Phylogenetic analyses based on the core genome sequences revealed that isolated strains exhibit close phylogenetic relatedness with Bifidobacterium genus members belonging to the Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium pullorum, and Bifidobacterium tissieri phylogenetic groups. Phenotypic characterization and genotyping based on the genome sequences clearly show that these strains are distinct from each of the type strains of the so far recognized Bifidobacterium species. Thus, B. phasiani sp. nov. (6T3 = LMG 32224T = DSM 112544T), B. pongonis sp. nov. (64T4 = LMG 32281T = DSM 112547T), B. saguinibicoloris sp. nov. (79T10 = LMG 32232T = DSM 112543T), B. colobi sp. nov. (80T4 = LMG 32225T = DSM 112552T), B. simiiventris sp. nov. (81T8 = LMG 32226T = DSM 112549T), B. santillanense sp. nov. (82T1 = LMG 32284T = DSM 112550T), B. miconis sp. nov. (82T10 = LMG 32282T = DSM 112551T), B. amazonense sp. nov. (82T18 = LMG 32297T = DSM 112548T), pluvialisilvae sp. nov. Summary Two new nitrite oxidizing bacteria for which the names Nitrococcus mobilis and Nitrospina gracilis are proposed were isolated from the marine environment. Nitrococcus mobilis was cultured from South Pacific waters and it is a large motile coccus with unique tubular cytomembranes. Nitrospina gracilis was isolated from South Atlantic waters and it is a long slender rod which lacks an extensive cytomembrane system. Both are obligate marine organisms and both are obligate chemoautotrophs. During 1988 and 1989, 409 specimens of southern African Anura, comprising 50 species in 9 families, were checked for opalinids in the cloaca. Protozelleriella devilliersi n. g., n. sp. was found in three of four Capensibufo rosei (Bufonidae); Zelleriella africana Sandon, 1938 in two of three Bufo angusticeps and one of 20 B. garmani (Bufonidae) plus three of 12 Phrynobatrachus natalensis, 12 of 19 Tomopterna cryptotis, seven of 14 T. delalandii, three of seven T. krugerensis and one of six T. natalensis (all Ranidae); Z. gambieri n. sp. in one of six T. natalensis; Z. garlandi n. sp. in two of six Kassina maculata (Hyperoliidae); Z. sandoni n. sp. in two of 20 B. garmani, two of six K. maculata, one of seven K. senegalensis and one of four Leptopelis mossambicus (Hyperoliidae) plus one of five Phrynomerus bifasciatus (Microhylidae) and two of 19 T. cryptotis. It is suggested that the Ranidae (in particular the genus Tomopterna) and the Hyperoliidae are among the major carriers of Zelleriella in the Afrotropical Region.  相似文献

The present paper deals with cytotaxonomy ofChelidonium majus L. s. 1. taxa and their hybrids. Based on results of hybridization experiments, cytology and reproductive isolation, a new combination,Ch. asiaticum (Hara) Krahulcová, is proposed. The structure of the aggregate is as follows:Ch. majus L. subsp.Majus (2n=12, distributed in Europe),Ch. majus L. subsp.grandiflorum (DC.)Printz (2n=12, S. Zusammenfassung Streptomyces glaucescens, Stamm Tü 49=ETH 22794, produziert neben Hydroxystreptomycin die Tetracenomycine, ein Gemisch lipophiler Antibiotica, von denen das mengenmäßig vorherrschende und zugleich das aktivste das Tetracenomycin C ist. Das blaßgelbe, kristallisierte Tetracenomycin C hat die Summenformel C23H20O11 und ähnelt chemisch den Tetracyclinen und den Anthracyclinonen.Tetracenomycin C ist wirksam gegen einige Grampositive Bakterien und vor allem gegen Streptomyceten; Gram-negative Bakterien werden nicht gehemmt. Aufgrund der Unterschiede bei den funktionellen Gruppen, des Wirkungsspektrums und den bislang bekannten Daten zur Wirkungsweise kann Tetracenomycin C weder zu den Tetracyclinen noch zu den Anthracyclinonen gerechnet werden.Der Erfolg der Suche nach neuen Antibiotica hängt in starkem Maße von dem verwendeten Screening-Modell ab. Ein erfolgversprechendes Modell sollte unter anderen zwei Bedingungen erfüllen:Erstens sollen ungewöhnliche, bisher nicht erfaßte Aktivitäten sichtbar werden und zweitens sollen bekannte Substanzen weitgehend ausgeschlossen werden. Ein Screening-Modell, das solche Ansprüche erfüllt, ist die Suche nach Engspektrum-Antibiotica (Zähner, 1974, 1977), die nur wenige Testkeime hemmen. Wie bei einigen anderen nichtklassischen Screening-Methoden wird hier auf eine Korrelation zwischen erstem Test und späterer Anwendung verzichtet; der erste Test dient nur als Leitschiene für die Auffindung und Isolierung eines neuen Metaboliten. Erst auf einer zweiten Stufe wird die Frage der Einsatzbarkeit des neuen Metaboliten geprüft. Neuartige Screeningmethoden werden erst seit relativ kurzer Zeit eingesetzt. Es schien uns deshalb lohnend, auch ältere, gut charakterisierte Antibioticaproduzenten auf die Bildung bisher übersehener Sekundärmetaboliten anzusehen. Streptomyces glaucescens (Stamm Tü 49=ETH 22794) ist schon seit längerer Zeit als Produzent von Hydroxy-Streptomycin bekannt (Hütter, 1967). Das Hauptinteresse an diesem Stamm gilt jedoch seiner Genetik, insbesondere den genetischen Grundlagen der Melaninbildung (Lerch u. Ettlinger, 1972; Baumann et al., 1974; Baumann u. Kocher, 1976). Bei der Prüfung dieses Stammes auf Bildung von Engspektrum-Antibiotica fanden wir die Tetracenomycine, ein Gemisch lipophiler Antibiotica. Hauptkomponente ist Tetracenomycin C, das nachstehend beschrieben werden soll.

Streptomyces glaucescens, strain Tü 49=ETH 22794, produces hydroxystreptomycin as well as the tetracenomycins, a mixture of several lipophilic antibiotics. The main component and the most active one is tetracenomycin C. Tetracenomycin C has a molecular formula C23H20O11 and is chemically related to tetracyclines and anthracyclinones.The pale yellow antibiotic is active against some gram-positive bacteria, especially against streptomycetes. Gram-negative bacteria and fungi are not inhibited. In considering the differences of biological activity and the functional groups of the molecule, tetracenomycin C is not a member of the tetracycline or anthracyclinone group of antibiotics.
