Common reed is increasingly harvested from the Mediterranean region toprovide thatching material to north European countries. The impact of thesemanagement practices on the fauna is poorly known. The aim of this study was toquantify the effect of reed cutting in the Mediterranean region through acomparative analysis of water regime, vegetation structure, arthropoddistribution and passerine assemblage at cut and uncut reedbeds in southernFrance. Cut reedbeds were characterised by a lower salinity, higher water levelin spring, and higher reed biomass than uncut reedbeds. Arthropod distributiondiffered consistently between cut and uncut sites, leading to a higher index offood available to passerines in cut reedbeds. Cut reedbeds had a similar birdspecies richness but a lower bird abundance, due to the significant decrease inMoustached Warblers and Bearded Tits at cut sites. The mild Mediterranean winterfavoured early growth of reed in spring, making harvested reedbeds suitable forbreeding of long-distance migrants such as the Great Reed Warbler and ReedWarbler. However, for the resident species that breed earlier in the season, cutreedbeds presumably lack sufficient vegetation cover to provide adequate nestingand feeding sites. Although biennial cutting (double wale) is considered as agood compromise between conservation and commercial interests in the UK, thejuxtaposition of annually cut and never cut reed patches appears as the onlysustainable alternative for the Mediterranean region. We further hypothesisethat an optimal mosaic design of cut/uncut reed patches could provide as high aconservation value as unmanaged reedbeds.

Boundaries between different habitats can be responsible for changes in species interactions, including modified rates of encounter between predators and prey. Such ‘edge effects’ have been reported in nesting birds, where nest predation rates can be increased at habitat edges. The literature concerning edge effects on nest predation rates reveals a wide variation in results, even within single habitats, suggesting edge effects are not fixed, but dynamic throughout space and time. This study demonstrates the importance of considering dynamic mechanisms underlying edge effects and their relevance when undertaking habitat management. In reedbed habitats, management in the form of mosaic winter reed cutting can create extensive edges which change rapidly with reed regrowth during spring. We investigate the seasonal dynamics of reedbed edges using an artificial nest experiment based on the breeding biology of a reedbed specialist. We first demonstrate that nest predation decreases with increasing distance from the edge of cut reed blocks, suggesting edge effects have a pivotal role in this system. Using repeats throughout the breeding season we then confirm that nest predation rates are temporally dynamic and decline with the regrowth of reed. However, effects of edges on nest predation were consistent throughout the season. These results are of practical importance when considering appropriate habitat management, suggesting that reed cutting may heighten nest predation, especially before new growth matures. They also contribute directly to an overall understanding of the dynamic processes underlying edge effects and their potential role as drivers of time-dependent habitat use.

Reedbeds of Phragmites australis have declined in Europe in recent decades. Moreover, in some European countries the remaining reedbeds are intensively managed for industrial reed cutting, hunting or grazing. Several species of conservation concern, such as herons and pelicans, use reedbeds as their principal breeding habitat. At the same time, data on habitat use and colony size of these species in relation to reedbed management practices are scarce. We investigated habitat characteristics of 71 reedbeds occupied or unoccupied by breeding Purple Herons Ardea purpurea in the Rhône delta (Camargue) and in other Mediterranean coastal marshes in southern France. In addition, data on colony size in occupied reedbeds were collected from aerial surveys. Reedbeds occupied by breeding Purple Herons were unharvested, or only partially harvested, in winter and had higher water levels in spring compared with unoccupied reedbeds. A logistic regression model with reed harvesting intensity and water levels in mid‐April as independent variables correctly classified reedbed use for 94.7% of the reedbeds in the study. A model with water levels in mid‐April alone was only 90.9% accurate, suggesting that low water level in spring is the most important factor limiting reedbed occupation by breeding Purple Herons. A general linear model indicated significant effects of harvesting intensity and reedbed surface area on colony size. Within occupied reedbeds there was a strong tendency for colony size to increase with increasing reedbed surface area. Given the recent developments in reed harvesting and wetland management in southern France and elsewhere in Europe, these results provide the first information on potential effects of these practices on reed nesting herons, and suggest that Purple Heron conservation is likely to be favoured by maintaining large uncut reedbeds with relatively high water levels in spring. The possible effect of changes in habitat on the Purple Heron population in southern France is discussed.

We performed nest predation experiments with artificial nests in reedbeds investigating whether nest predation pressure is different at the water-reed edge and the grassland-reed edge compared with the reed interior. Furthermore, we tested the effects of vegetation structure (reed density, height and thickness) and the effect of other nest site characteristics (distance from edge, water depth) on the success of artificial nests. The experiments were completed 3 times during the breeding season in 2001 at Lake Neusiedl, Austria. Each artificial nest resembled Great Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) nests and contained one plasticine and one Quail (Coturnix coturnix) egg and the predators were identified by marks left on the eggs. The potential predators were birds, probably the Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus), gulls (Larus spp.) and reed warblers (Acrocephalus spp.). Nest survival data were analysed using the Mayfield method, and we performed a discriminant analysis for the data of vegetation and nest site characteristics. The nest predation was higher at the edges than in the reed interior, and was most pronounced in April, before the new reed sprouted. The reason for this finding was probably that after May the new reed contributed to greater concealment of the nests through the higher reed density and height.

Wetlands in many parts of the world are affected by fragmentation at multiple spatial scales. In Switzerland, most wetlands have been destroyed over the past two centuries and management of the remaining wetland reserves has intensified in the recent years leading to increased fragmentation of reed areas within reserves. Using four years of data on the reproductive performance of color-banded reed bunting Emberiza schoeniclus populations, we explored fragmentation effects on nest predation rates at four spatial scales ranging from the nest to the landscape scale. In the egg stage, predation rate was negatively related to vegetation cover, vegetation height and nest height, but positively linked to water cover and depth next to the nest (nest scale). Probability of predation declined with increasing size of reed patches containing the nests and distances of nests to the water and land sided reed edge, as well as with decreasing edge to area ratio (edge scale). There was a weak positive association between degree of fragmentation of reed patches within sites and nest predation rates (site scale). Finally, nest predation probability increased with distance to the nearest wetland (landscape scale). Jointly analyzing variables from different spatial scales revealed that a model combining variables from the nest, edge and landscape scale best explained predation probability in the egg stage. In the nestling stage, the single most important factor influencing nest predation probability was the distance to the nearest wetland (landscape scale), with nest predation decreasing with distance between sites. Our results show that the probability of nest predation in reed buntings is affected by fragmentation within and between wetland reserves and that the effects differ between breeding stages. Future management of wetland reserves should aim at sparing reed patches large and dense enough to provide safe nest sites for birds.

Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) is the most commonly used larvicide to control mosquitoes worldwide. Considered as nontoxic to most organisms, Bti can nevertheless cause trophic perturbations to natural communities by reducing the abundance of Chironomidae, which are a key element of wetland food webs. Since August 2006, up to 8400 of the 33 000 ha of mosquito larval biotopes in the Camargue (Rhône delta, in southern France), are monitored by a public agency and Bti‐sprayed (aqueous solution of VectoBac 12AS at 2.5 L/ha) whenever mosquito larvae (Ochlerotatus caspius and Oc. detritus) appeared in water bodies. This resulted in 30–50 aerial treatments/year, in addition to ground spraying of unknown frequency. The sprayed habitats include Phragmites australis reedbeds, which support a specific avifauna of conservation concern. We compared the abundance of invertebrate prey available to passerine birds at treated and control sites relative to the predicted values based on hydrology over a 9‐year period. Food available to reed passerines was significantly reduced at treated areas, translating into a 34% decrease in breeding birds based on predictive modeling. The most affected arthropods were Diptera, Aranaea, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera. No cumulative effects were observed over time, but the recovery of the invertebrate assemblage after the cessation of mosquito control was delayed due to Bti spore persistence and proliferation in the sediments. While hydrology remains a prime factor influencing primary and secondary productivity of the Camargue reed marshes, Bti spraying had significant negative effects on animal communities at several trophic levels.

Comparative analyses carried out on two different phylogenies of cooperatively and noncooperatively breeding Australian passerine birds (parvorder Corvida) were unable to detect a significant difference in nest predation rates after controlling for body mass and risk of predation due to location of the nest (nest safety). Nest predation rates, however, decrease as nest safety and body mass increase. We suggest that cooperative breeding does not bring about a current net change in rates of nest predation among Australian passerines. Species breeding cooperatively may have developed antipredator strategies that produce results similar to those adopted by noncooperatively breeding species. The function of cooperative breeding may lie outside of antipredator strategies.

Post-breeding habitats of nine passerine species were studied in the permanently flooded reed beds of ponds near the village Pusté úlany (SW Slovakia) in 2002. Structural features of reed beds and the abundance of all birds studied were sampled at two sites and eight study plots. The reed bed structure and abundance of four passerines differed considerably between the individual study plots. The variations in vegetation structure were also caused by winter reed burning in the SE part of study area. Stems in burnt reed beds were smaller and thinner than unburnt. Abundance of the reed warbler and to a lesser extent sedge warbler was higher in tall reed beds, while the bearded tit preferred thick reed stems. Position of reed beds along the shore — open water gradient was an important factor in terms of abundance at the study plots in the case of the reed bunting. This species showed a strong preference for the reed bed edge with open water. Horizontal distribution of other species seems to be random, however, the birds with the exception of Savi’s warbler preferred the upper stratum of reed bed in vertical distribution. Our field data corroborate with those found in experimental studies concerning with ecomorphological characteristics of birds. Some inconsistencies, however, could also be caused by other factors (e.g. foraging preferences). Comparison of breeding and post-breeding habitat requirements of the studied bird species confirmed a more or less random distribution of the majority of species in the post-breeding period. Some variation was found in the cases of only the reed warbler and bearded tit.

The Aquatic Warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola) is a song bird breeding in fen mires and similarly structured other wetlands with a water depth of 1–10 cm. Widespread in central-European wetlands at the beginning of the 20th century, the species is now globally threatened. The westernmost and genetically distinct Pomeranian population is even on the verge of extinction. The major challenge in the conservation of remaining habitat is the cost-efficient removal of biomass. About 50% of the Pomeranian population survives in a valley fen near Rozwarowo in Northwest Poland, where between 1993 and 2007 a conspicuous change in breeding habitat has taken place from summer grazed sedge meadows to commercial winter cut reed beds. We compared vegetation structure, site conditions, and potential prey abundance with the distribution and abundance of Aquatic Warblers in Rozwarowo Marshes and studied temporal changes and the compatibility of conservation and reed cutting interests. Aquatic Warblers now occur almost exclusively in sparsely growing, low reed with abundant Thelypteris palustris, Carex elata, and Lysimachia vulgaris. This vegetation type provides more potential prey for Aquatic Warblers than the higher productive tall reed, whereas the patches of sedge vegetation have become too small following succession after abandonment. Currently, commercial reed cutting maintains suitable Aquatic Warbler breeding habitat. Considering the impending changes in the reed market, there is a need for flexible agri-environmental schemes (AES) to ensure that stripes are left uncut and to prevent eutrophication by high and long flooding of the site.

There is a conflict between nature conservation and thatching industry regarding the management of reedbeds. On one hand, reedbeds are of an economical importance by providing thatching material, on the other hand, they harbour several endangered species. Reedbeds are typically managed by winter cutting, but its impacts on biodiversity are poorly understood. Our aim was to study the effects of winter cutting on the habitat diversity and structural heterogeneity of wetlands in a lowland alkali landscape (East-Hungary). We tested the following hypotheses: (i) Both diversity of plant species and habitat diversity are lower in winter cut wetlands compared to unmanaged stands. (ii) The distribution of biomass (green biomass, litter and standing dead biomass) is more homogeneous in winter cut wetlands compared to unmanaged ones. We found that winter cutting decreased habitat diversity and structural heterogeneity at multiple scales. Number of plant species and all measures of habitat diversity (number of patches, vegetation types and the length of vegetation margins) had lower scores in cut wetlands than in unmanaged ones. We found that unmanaged wetlands harboured high amount of accumulated biomass and they also maintained high habitat diversity likely due to the heterogeneous distribution of the biomass. In unmanaged wetlands, biomass accumulation did not decrease habitat diversity and also contributed to a higher structural heterogeneity. In cut wetlands, expansion of reed was an important driver of the decrease in habitat diversity and structural heterogeneity. Reed expansion likely overrode fine-scale edaphic conditions (hydrology and salinity) in shaping vegetation patterns; thus we suggest to avoid intensive winter cutting.

We examined the effects of trunk cutting on the regrowth responses of two dominant willow species, Salix eriocarpa and S. gilgiana , and the subsequent effects on the community structure (abundance and species richness) of herbivorous and predaceous arthropods. We studied ten randomly selected pairs of cut and uncut (control) trees of each willow species. Field observations showed that when the trunks were cut, shoots sprouted from the base and developed rapidly. These shoots continued to grow until July, producing lateral shoots and leaves, whereas current-year shoots on uncut trees essentially stopped growing by April. In July, the upper leaves of cut trees were less tough and had a greater water and nitrogen content than leaves of uncut trees. Leaf consumption and abundance and species richness of both herbivorous and predaceous arthropods were significantly greater on cut trees than on uncut trees in both willow species. Overall, trunk cutting resulted in at least a two-fold increase in both relative abundance and species richness within the arthropod community on the willow species. We concluded that the severe physical damage caused by trunk cutting greatly increased the biodiversity of herbivorous and predaceous arthropods through bottom-up cascading effects.

1 Bird species numbers were studied on 109 reed islands at Lake Velence, Hungary, in the 1993 and 1994 breeding seasons. The aim was to describe and account for the abundance and distribution patterns of the bird species. 2 It was expected that an exponential model would fit the calculated species–area curves. However, for the 1993 data, both the power function (LogS ~ LogArea) and the exponential (S ~ LogArea) models did so, while the power function, exponential and linear (S ~ A) models fitted the curves for the 1994 data. 3 The results showed that the pattern was not random: a collection of small islands held more species than a few large islands with the same total area. 4 The relative species richness of small islands is a result of the preference of most common passerine bird species for the edges of reed islands. Most individuals were found in the first 5 m of the reedbed, and no edge avoidance was detected on a local spatial scale. Large, rarer species (e.g. Great White Egret), however, were found to be dependent on large reed islands. 5 Comparison of results with two other studies on bird communities of reed islands revealed that the type of landscape matrix (e.g. deep water, shallow water or agricultural lands) among reed patches significantly influences bird communities. Deep water was dominated by grebes and coot, shallow water by reed‐nesting passerines, and farmed areas by reed‐ and bush‐nesting passerines.

The ability of nest predation to influence habitat settlement decisions in birds is widely debated, despite its importance in limiting fitness. Here, we experimentally manipulated nest predation risk across a landscape and asked the question, do migratory birds assess and respond to variation in nest predation risk when choosing breeding habitats? We examined habitat preference by quantifying the density and settlement date of eight species of migratory passerines breeding in areas with and without intact nest predator communities. We found consistently more individuals nesting in areas with reduced nest predation than in areas with intact predator assemblages, although predation risk had no influence on settlement or breeding phenology. Additionally, those individuals occupying safer nesting habitats exhibited increased singing activity. These findings support a causal relationship between habitat choice and nest predation risk and suggest the importance of nest predation risk in shaping avian community structure and breeding activity.

Maintenance of reedbeds and their associated avifauna requires intervention management to modify natural succession by means of, for example, reed cutting. Nest site density of Greylag Geese Anser anser in relation to time since reedbeds were last harvested was studied at Vejlerne nature reserve, Denmark (57°00–07'N, 8°50'–9°10'E). Low nest densities were found in areas in the first four years after cutting followed by high densities in areas unharvested for five or six years. Subsequently, nest density remained high for four to seven years (depending on site) before declining to low levels again. Areas cut in the year of study and areas cut more than 16 years before contained virtually no nests. The increase in nest density with time since last harvest seemed to be related to an increase in vegetation cover (reed stem density). Areas harvested more than 16 years before probably became too dense for the geese, and newly harvested areas had too low a shoot density, hence their low nest density. However, more detailed studies are needed to establish causal relationships.

Capsule: Bearded Reedlings Panurus biarmicus show consistent nest timing, select old, compacted areas of reed when positioning their nests, and may adjust nest structure in relation to local reed characteristics and temperature.

Aims: To investigate the nest timing, nest site selection and nest structure of a rare and elusive passerine, the Bearded Reedling at the northern limit of this species’ range.

Methods: A sample of Bearded Reedling nests from the Tay Reedbeds in Scotland were located and monitored with regard to the timing of nesting, fate, fine-scale habitat characteristics and nest structure.

Results: First egg dates and brood sizes were consistent between years of the study despite variation in spring temperatures. Bearded Reedlings nested within unmanaged patches of reed, positively selecting deep leaf litters and compacted reed. Attributes of nest structure, namely internal and external diameter, were influenced by nest site characteristics and local temperature.

Conclusion: Despite a limited sample size, the study suggests that reedbed management should ensure adequate areas of old, dry and unmanaged reed are available when aiming to encourage breeding Bearded Reedlings. Additionally, the apparently flexible structure of the nest may assist this species when coping with changeable climatic conditions.

An attempt was made to estimate the role of small mammals and birds in the cycling of nutrients in the littoral zone of lakes. We estimated the approximate amounts of food, organic matter and elements ingested and egested during the breeding season by waterfowl. Small mammal densities were estimated, and their movements studied between different patches of a mosaic landscape, including the lake's shore region. Studies on passerine birds were aimed at determining the territories of some species in alder forest. Special attention was paid to the range of penetration of the reed belts by forest species.

Detailed estimations of habitat structure, plant species diversity and diversity of arthropods were made at six 4.0 ha sites, two on mainland Western Australia near Perth and four on adjacent islands. The number of resident passerine bird species was also recorded at each site. Plant species diversity, and horizontal foliage diversity (=patchiness) varied only slightly between sites. There were significant positive correlations between arthropod Order diversity and bird diversity, and between vertical foliage diversity and bird diversity. In both Acacia and dune scrub, the Rottnest Island sites had more individuals of arthropods than the mainland sites but these belonged to fewer Orders. Numerical imbalance between arthropod Orders on Rottnest Island probably results from diminution of predators (passerine birds) there. As the actual number of arthropods is higher on the islands, the absence of so many species of passerine birds may result from other factors (ecological and historical).

Breeding close to top predators is a widespread reproductive strategy. Breeding animals may gain indirect benefits if proximity to top predators results in a reduction of predation due to suppression of mesopredators. We tested if passerine birds gain protection from mesopredators by nesting within territories of a top predator, the Ural owl (Strix uralensis). We placed nest boxes for pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) in Ural owl nest sites and in control sites (currently unoccupied by owls). The nest boxes were designed so that nest predation risk could be altered (experimentally increased) after flycatcher settlement; we considered predation rate as a proxy of mesopredator abundance. Overall, we found higher nest predation rates in treatment than in control sites. Flycatcher laying date did not differ between sites, but smaller clutches were laid in treatment sites compared to controls, suggesting a response to perceived predation risk. Relative nest predation rate varied between years, being higher in owl nest sites in 2 years but similar in another; this variation might be indirectly influenced by vole abundance. Proximity to Ural owl nests might represent a risky habitat for passerines. High predation rates within owl territories could be because small mesopredators that do not directly threaten owl nests are attracted to owl nest sites. This could be explained if some mesopredators use owl territories to gain protection from their own predators, or if top predators and mesopredators independently seek similar habitats.
