The composition and annual cycle of the zooplankton of two Ethiopian Rift Valley soda lakes is described. Lake Langano has a conductivity of 1 400 to 1800 µS cm–1 and a permanent mineral turbidity. Lake Abiata is more concentrated (conductivity 19 000 to 23 000 µS cm–1) and more alkaline but less turbid; it is characterised by dense phytoplankton blooms, mainly cyanophytes.The zooplankton assemblage is typically tropical, with relatively few species of Cladocera and Copepoda. There was a marked difference in zooplankton between the two lakes, Lake Abiata showing much higher concentrations and greater wet season/ dry season differences. The species composition was also different. Lake Abiata lacked Cladocera, and calanoid copepods occurred only during the wet season with lower conductivities. These two phenomena were attributed to high sodium bicarbonate concentration and to dense cyanophyte blooms. Eleven species of rotifers occurred in Lake Abiata, including six Brachionus spp. but B. rubens was the only rotifer found in Lake Langano. The seasonal variation of the zooplankton is discussed in relation to seasonal fluctuations in conductivity and Chl a concentration.  相似文献

Samples were taken from a Malaysian estuary along a salinity gradient from full strength sea water down to a conductivity of 27 µS cm–1. In a region where the conductivity fluctuated between 6500 and 14000 µS only empty loricas of Keratella cochlearis and Lecane bulla were found. Where the salinity reached a maximum of 3800 µS Lecane bulla was the dominant rotifer, and 17 other species were found. Where the conductivity remained below 1000 µS at all stages of the tidal cycle there were more species of rotifers, up to 33 at one station.The rotifer fauna of the estuary was compared to the assemblage found in two local ponds. Of the 63 species found in the estuary only 29 were also found in the ponds. Compared to the total known rotifer fauna of Malaysia the estuary has a higher proportion of Lecane species (40%), and the genera Brachionus and Trichocerca are under-represented.Species associated with inland saline waters, such as Brachionus plicatilis, B. dimidiatus and Hexarthra jenkinae were not found in the estuary.  相似文献

Crustacean plankton was studied in 12 lakes in theHøylandet area in 1986–87. Basic lake characteristicsare elevation 134–415 m, surface area 9–530 ha, pH 5.9–7.1,conductivity (25 °C) 12–40 µS cm-1 andSecchi depth 4–9 m. Number ofspecies present varied between 3 and 11. Populationnumbers between 4000 and 400 000 per m2 andbiomasses were within the range 30 to1800 mg m-2 dry weight. Cladocera dominated overCopepoda in lakes with allopatric brown trout (Salmo trutta L.), on the contrary to lakes also populatedby Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)). Thesevariations are caused by differences in elevation,lake morphometry, water quality, fish predation andthe general distribution of the species. The largestlakes at lowest elevation were richest in species. Theacid sensitive genus Daphnia was represented by 3species. The lakes Storgrønningen (530 ha) andRøyrtjønna (27 ha) were sampled monthly in theice-free seasons of 1986–89, and Storgrønningen moreintensively from June to November in 1987 and 1988. The same6 species of Cladocera and 5 of Copepoda were presentin both lakes. Their life cycles were traditional orknown from several other Scandinavian lakes. Meanseasonal biomasses were of the range600–750 mg m-2. At the species level, there wereconsiderable variations between years inStorgrønningen and particularly in Røyrtjønna. Noeffects of human impacts on the crustacean planktonwere found. The Høylandet lakes are representative forScandinavian oligotrophic to almost ultra-oligotrophiclakes. Storgrønningen is well qualified as a referencesystem. The between year variations in Røyrtjønna areso extreme, that any human impact could only be traced at alevel causing the extinction of species.  相似文献

The composition and temporal abundance patterns of zooplankton community in Lake Prespa pelagic zone were studied throughout an annual cycle (October 2008–September 2009). Eighteen species (10 Rotifera, 5 Cladocera, 2 Copepoda, 1 Mollusca) were evidenced. It includes Arctodiaptomus steindachneri, an endemic calanoid of the Western Balkans. The zooplankton density varied during the investigated period and certain seasonal successions in temporal transpositions of their maximal development were noticed. The total zooplankton density was much higher in spring and summer period. The representatives of subclass Copepoda were dominant during the whole year. The dominant species was A. steindachneri. At the second place (with exception of the winter period) were the Cladocera representatives. The dominant species was Daphnia cucullata. At the third and fourth place were rotifers and larval form of Dreissena polymorpha, respectively. The quantitative presence of the Copepoda representatives was significantly lower in terms of the previous investigations. The Cladocera quantity reached high values during this period, particularly in summer. Such altering in the quantitative ratio between Copepoda and Cladocera in favor of the Cladocera, especially high quantitative presence of D. cucullata, typical for eutrophic lakes, imply of significant changes in zooplankton community and changes of the water quality in Lake Prespa pelagial.  相似文献

Comparative studies on the limnology, species diversity and standing stock biomass of phytoplankton and zooplankton in five freshwater lakes, Naivasha and Oloidien, Ruiru, Masinga and Nairobi reservoirs, were undertaken. Phytoplankton chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen and temperature were also measured. Thermocyclops oblongatus (Copepoda) was dominant in all the lakes. Ceriodaphnia cornuta and Diaphanosoma excisum (Cladocera) dominated in lakes Naivasha and Oloiden, whereas in Ruiru, Masinga and Nairobi reservoirs, Brachionus angularis and Hexarthra mira (Rotifera) were the dominant zooplankters. Phytoplankton biomass as chlorophyll a was lowest in Ruiru dam 5.64 ± 4.0 µg l-1 and highest in the eutrophic Nairobi dam 71.5 ± 12.02 µg l-1. The endorheic lakes Naivasha and Oloidien showed medium values of 24.5 ± 4.0 µg l-1.  相似文献

Two insecticides, lindane (321 µg l–1) and deltamethrin (13 µg l–1) were employed in a four mesocosm experiment (two ponds of 10 m3 and two of 16 m3) to asses the impact of water pollution by pesticides. Resistance of the different zooplankton species was variable and depended upon both the group and the insecticide concentration. No effect of lindane was observed on macrozooplancton such as Cladocera and Copepoda. In the deltamethrin-treated pond, all species of zooplankton were found dead a day after the treatment. The microzooplankton (Rotifera and copepod nauplii) were highly susceptible to both insecticides. Although the larvae of Chaoborus were present in the ponds after the treatments, their density decreased (less than 1 individual l–1). The elimination of filter-feeding zooplankton by deltamethrin was followed by an increase of the concentration of chlorophyll a in the post-treatment period. Two months later the original zooplankton population recovered, with the addition of a new and dominant species: Ceriodaphnia reticulata.  相似文献

The study on 10 lakes within the Ethiopian Rift Valley during March–May 1991 covered a range of conductivity (K25) between 286 and 49100 µS cm–1. HCO3 — CO inf3 sup2– and Na+ were the dominant ions in all the lakes. Concentrations of K+, Cl and SO inf4 sup2– increased with increasing salinity and alkalinity, whereas Ca2+ and Mg2+ decreased. Comparison of these data with previous records showed that a ten-fold dilution of total ionic concentration occurred over 30 years in Lake Metahara and about three-fold increase occurred over 65 years in Lake Abijata. Concentrations of soluble silica were generally high (12–222 mg SiO2 1–1) and increased with increasing salinity, except for Lake Chamo which showed SiO2 depletion (to < 1 mg SiO2 1 –1) over the past three decades.The relationship between ionic concentration and phosphorus was irregular although high phosphorus concentrations generally corresponded with increasing salinity. Fitting data to the Dillon & Rigler (1974) chlorophyll a — total phosphorus relationship suggested that lakes Zwai, Awassa and Chamo are phosphorus-limited, whereas others have surplus phosphorus.  相似文献

We determined the biomass and community structure of macroinvertebrates (>500 µm) associated with macrophytes, sediments, and unvegetated open water in three oligosaline (0.8 to 8.0 mS cm–1) and three mesosaline (8.0 to 30.0 mS cm–1) lakes in the Wyoming High Plains, USA. Total biomass of epiphytic and benthic invertebrates did not change with salinity, but biomass of macroinvertebrate zooplankton in open water was significantly higher in mesosaline lakes. Community composition of invertebrates differed between the two salinity categories: large grazer/detritivores (gastropods and amphipods) were dominant in oligosaline lakes, whereas small planktivores and their insect predators were more prevalent in mesosaline lakes. Both direct physiological effects of salinity, as well as a shift in the form of primary production from macrophytes to phytoplankton, probably explain these changes in community composition. Salinity effects on invertebrate communities appear to be less important to top avian consumers than are costs of osmoregulation.  相似文献

Water quality and plankton periodicity was studied in two mine lakes near Jos in the younger granite area of Plateau State, Nigeria. The investigation was carried out for 8 months. Transparency, pH and NO3-N were significantly higher in Lake II while DOM, alkalinity, PO 4 3– -P, BOD and chloride were significantly higher in Lake I. The order of dominance in Lake I was Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Dinophyceae while for Lake II; Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Dinophyceae. In Lake I the zooplankton in order of dominance were Cladocera, Rotifera, Copepoda, and nauplii and in Lake II Cladocera, Copepoda, Rotifera and nauplii. Although both lakes would seem unproductive based on the PO 4 3– -P and NO 3 -N levels, Lake I appears more productive than Lake II.  相似文献

The filtering rates of14C labelledChlamydomonas sp. by 3 dominant species of rotifers were studied in eutrophic Lake Aydat. They varied from 4 to 53 µl ind–1 h–1 forKeratella cochlearis, from 2 to 56 µl.–1h–1 forKeratella quadrata and from 3 to 52 µl ind–1 h–1 forKellicottia longispina. Their maximum assimilation efficiency was 32%. At the measured grazing rates, these populations could clear the water in less than two days during July. In Lake Aydat, the rotifers community could play an important role in the regulation of seasonal succession of phytoplankton and bacteria.  相似文献

The clearance rates of 14 carbon-labelled Chlamydomonas sp. by the copepodite and adult stages of the 2 dominant species of Copepoda were studied in eutrophic Lake Aydat. They varied from 30 to 3,007 µl ind–1 h–1 for Acanthodiaptomus denticornis (mean = 600 µl ind–1 h–1) and from 20 to 1,133 µl ind–1 h–1 for Cyclops vicinus (mean = 340 µl ind–1 h–1). Their maximum assimilation efficiencies were 58% and 50%, respectively. These populations collectively could consume the available food in 4 days during September (maximum daily grazing rate = 24%). Mean individual clearance rates could be ranked Acanthodiaptomus denticornis > Ceriodaphnia quadrangula > Chydorus sphaericus > Daphnia longispina > Cyclops vicinus vicinus > Bosmina longirostris > K. cochlearis > K. quadrata and Kellicottia longispina. Like cladocerans and rotifers, the copepods living in this eutrophic lake can feed at low oxygen concentrations.  相似文献

The rotifers of the genus Asplanchna were sampled four times during the summer from eight lakes of different types. The mean individual carbon content in the population varied between 0.15–0.66 µg C ind.-1 (n = 21) for A. priodonta and 1.0–1.6 µg C ind.-1 (n = 3) for A. herricki. The carbon content and the size of A. priodonta varied considerably between the populations of both different lakes and dates.The carbon level of both Asplanchna species (sample mean 0.2–1% of wet weight) was considerably lower than is generally found for rotifers. Much of the variation of carbon level could be explained by an inverse relationship with wet weight. The high variation in the carbon content of individuals suggests that Asplanch population may adapt their mean body size to fit prevailing environmental conditions.  相似文献

We measured laboratory clearance rates of 10 rotifer and one unidentified bryozoan species from 3 different lakes using 32P labeled algae (Chlamydomonas) or yeast (Rhodotorula). Clearance rates for all rotifers fed yeast ranged from < 2.0 to > 260 µl · animal–1 · h–1 depending on species. The in vitro clearance rates of two sessile rotifers (Ptygura crystallina and P. pilula) were not significantly different from previously measured in situ rates (Wallace and Starkweather 1983). Clearance rates for 5 rotifers fed algae ranged from < 5.0 to > 90.0 µl · animal–1 · h–1. Ptygura beauchampi, P. crystallina, P. pilula, Floscularia conifera, and F. melicerta ingested both cell types but their clearance rates varied substantially among species and between cell types. There was a substantial time-dependent loss of 32P from formalin-fixed animals (Sinantherina socialis) awaiting processing. This loss stabilized at approximately 20 hours and was estimated to be about 40% of the initial ingested label. Clearance rates for the bryozoan fed yeast or algae were highly variable, ranging from < 1.0 to > 3 000 µl · animal–1 · h–1.  相似文献

The seasonal fluctuation in the zooplankton community of Azibo reservoir (Portugal), was studied from November 1986 till November 1987.Fifty-three species of Protozoa, Rotifera, Copepoda and Cladocera were found. The zooplankton community was numerically dominated by rotifers, which represented 66% of the total.The highest rotifer density was reached in the beginning of spring. It decreased after the cladocerans peaked in May.Copepods had two maxima, one in April and another one in September.Although protozoans rose to high densities during winter (1.07 × 105 ind m–3), their contribution to total biomass was small (2.03%).  相似文献

Long-term (1969–2002) data record of biomass distribution of rotifers in Lake Kinneret is combined with previously published information on their metabolic activity and newly calculated population dynamics parameters to synthesize a model of their seasonal dynamics in Lake Kinneret. Nineteen rotifer species were recorded in routine samples collected in Lake Kinneret (Israel) in 7 offshore (deeper than 5 m), stations, at 12 discrete depths during 1969–2002. Organisms were sorted and counted (including external egg carrying females), biomass was measured and calculated for the entire lake stock (gw.w m−2; mg l−1). Rates of grazing, respiration and production were measured experimentally at three different temperature ranges. Results were extrapolated to the lake community for months with similar temperatures. Rotifera comprised 7% of total zooplankton biomass in Lake Kinneret whilst Cladocera and Copepoda 58 and 35% respectively. Rotifers were found to be more abundant during December–June and decline in summer months. Monthly (1969–2001) means indicated total grazing capacity of rotifers as 11%, respiration as 9% and production as 3.7% of the total zooplankton metabolic activity. Positive relations were indicated between rotifer and small bodied cladoceran numerical concentrations. Population growth models suggest that rotifers are not food limited in Lake Kinneret but that fish predation plays an important role in regulating abundance in spring-summer and fall.  相似文献

Lake Notasha, near the crest of the Oregon Cascade mountain range, is the most dilute lake known. The measured conductivity during two visits was 1.3 and 1.6 µS cm–1 with a sum of base cations of 9 and 18 µeq L–1; bicarbonate was the dominant anion. Most of the cations in the lake can be accounted for by evapoconcentration of precipitation, although input of weathering products cannot be excluded as a source. The topographic watershed has a mixed coniferous forest, but the physical setting of the lake apparently minimizes hydrologic and ionic contributions from the watershed. This feature makes lakes such as Notasha appropriate receptors for monitoring atmospheric contaminants.  相似文献

In a survey of eight lake systems located in north-central Florida, total zooplankton abundance showed a strong positive correlation (r2=0.87, a=0.01) with trophic state. Zooplankton abundance averaged 1.0 × 105 organisms · m–2 in oligotrophic systems and up to 8.2 × 105 organisms · m–2 in the eutrophic systems. Seasonal variations in total abundance were greatest in the eutrophic lakes where rotifers dominated and periodically produced sharp population peaks (approaching 2.0 × 106· m–2). In contrast, the more oligotrophic systems had relatively stable levels of total abundance and were dominated by copepods. Diversities of the major taxa in the lakes were variable with one to three species of copepods, zero to four species of cladocera, and two to seven species of rotifers dominant at any one time. Planktonic cladoceran communities were often composed of only one or two species. Low cladocera diversity in these subtropical systems was suggestive of increased predation pressure on this group of crustaceans. Poor quantity of zooplankton was recorded in a Danube arm situated on the right side of the Danube River in Slovakia (river km 1857) in 2002 and 2003. All over the year the arm is significantly influenced by groundwater by reason of seepage. Because of low mean water temperature (12°C) and poorly developed macrovegetation in particular, the arm reminds gravel pit-like. The annual average of zooplankton biomass was low and ranged from 0.35 g m−3 (2002) to 1.28 g m−3 (2003), because of low crustacean abundance. Total cladoceran abundance was excessively low in both years and ranged from 3.5 N L−1 (2002) to 16.6 N L−1 (2003). Small species, Bosmina longirostris and Chydorus sphaericus were dominant. Only four adult Copepoda — Cyclops vicinus, Thermocyclops crassus, Eurytemora velox and Eudiaptomus gracilis — were recorded in quantitative samples of both years. In the zooplankton assemblage dominated rotifers (Synchaeta pectinata, Synchaeta oblonga, Polyarthra dolichoptera and Keratella cochlearis) which represented 78% and 67% of total abundance respectively. In May and July 2001, the biological and ecological features of 22 salt lakes in northern Tibet , China, were investigated.Their salinity ranged from 1 to 390 g l–1. One hundred and thirty two samples were collected. Ninty five taxa of phytoplankton and 42 taxa of zooplankton were recorded. The dominant cation was sodium, with magnesium generally sub-dominant; CO32– was the dominant anion in low salinity, chloride was the dominant anion with increasing salinity. Major species were Gloeothece linearis, Oscillatoria tenuis, Chroococcus minutus (blue-green algae); Navicula spp, Cymbella pusilla, Diatoma elongatum(diatoms); Dunaliella salina, Chlorella vulgarisand Ulothrix tenerrima (green algae). Major zooplankton included: Vorticella campanula, Epistylis daphniae (Protista); Keratella quadrata, Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifera); Artemiaspp. (Anostraca); Daphniopsis tibetana (Cladocera); Cletocamptus dertersiand Cyclops vicinus (Copepoda). Ten species were recorded in hypersaline waters; apart from those metioned above, they included CyclidiumsppLitonotus fasciola, Euplotes terricola, Strombilidium viride, Brachionus variabilis, Colurella adriatica, Keratella cochlearis, Colurella adriatica, and Cyclops sp. Seven taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates are recorded, represented by Cyprissp. (Ostracoda), Gammarus sp. (Amphipoda), Radixsp. and Hippeutis sp. (Mollusca); chiroonomids Tendipus group salinarius (Diptera), Nematoda, Trochophora and Ephrdra sp. At present, there are fishes only in Bangong Co., and no fishes recorded in other salt lakes. The total number of plankton species has a significantly negative correlation with the salinity, and decreased with increasing altitude, but not significant.  相似文献

The paper summarizes the results of a ten-year (1981–1991) zooplankton research on the Lake Loosdrecht, a highly eutrophic lake. The main cause of the lake's eutrophication and deteriorating water quality was supply up to mid 1984 of water from the River Vecht. This supply was replaced by dephosphorized water from the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal in 1984. The effects of this and other restoration measures on the lake's ecosystem were studied. Despite a reduction in the external P-load from ca. 1.0 g P m–2 y–1 to ca. 0.35 g m–2 y–1 now, the filamentous prokaryotes, including cyanobacteria and Prochlorothrix, continue to dominate the phytoplankton.Among the crustacean plankton Bosmina spp, Chydorus sp. and three species of cyclopoid copepods and their nauplii are quite common. Though there was no major change in the composition of abundant species, Daphnia cucullata, which is the only daphnid in these lakes, became virtually extinct since 1989. Among about 20 genera and 40 species of rotifers the important ones are: Anuraeopsis fissa, Keratella cochlearis, Filinia longiseta and Polyarthra. The rotifers usually peak in mid-summer following the crustacean peak in spring. The mean annual densities of crustaceans decreased during 1988–1991. Whereas seston (< 150 µm) mean mass in the lake increased since 1983 by 20–60%, zooplankton (> 150 µm) mass decreased by 15–35%.The grazing by crustacean community, which was attributable mainly to Bosmina, had mean rates between 10 and 25% d–1. Between 42 and 47% of the food ingested was assimilated. In spring and early summer when both rotifers and crustaceans have their maximal densities the clearance rates of the rotifers were much higher. Based on C/P ratios, the zooplankton (> 150 µm) mass contained 2.5 times more phosphorus than seston (< 150 µm) mass so that the zooplankton comprised 12.5 % of the total-P in total particulate matter in the open water, compared with only 4.5% of the total particulate C. The mean excretion rates of P by zooplankton varied narrowly between 1.5 and 1.8 µg P 1 d–1, which equalled between 14 and 28% d–1 of the P needed for phytoplankton production.The lack of response to restoration measures cannot be ascribed to one single factor. Apparently, the external P-loading is still not low enough and internal P-loading, though low, may be still high enough to sustain high seston levels. Intensive predation by bream is perhaps more important than food quality (high concentrations of filamentous cyanobacteria) in depressing the development of large-bodied zooplankton grazers, e.g. Daphnia. This may also contribute to resistance of the lake's ecosystem to respond to rehabilitation measures.  相似文献
