There has been significant global growth in the use of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. The fundamental microbial processes involved in the biodegradation of organic wastewater pollutants determine the range of design and operational parameters relevant to individual constructed wetlands. In this study, the biodegradation and mineralization of ethanol by acclimated and non-acclimated microbial populations in pilot-scale constructed wetlands were compared. By increasing the pollutant concentration at incremental intervals (incremental priming), the biodegradative capacity of a sand-filled constructed wetland was significantly enhanced. At an influent COD concentration of 15,800 mg L−1, no volatile fatty acids were detected in the effluent of an incrementally primed system and the maximum effluent COD concentration was 180 mg L−1. In contrast, an identical, unprimed system, amended with a lower concentration of COD (7587 mg L−1), exhibited a maximum effluent COD concentration of 1400 mg L−1, with the anaerobic metabolites, butyrate and propionate accounting for up to 83% of the effluent COD. It was demonstrated that the use of incremental priming, together with a vertical subsurface flow mode of operation enhanced long-term function of constructed wetlands. Future research should focus on determining the concentration gradients and incremental intervals necessary for optimal microbial acclimation to a range of organic pollutants and/or wastewaters, in order to minimize start-up times without significantly impairing the benefits derived from incremental priming.  相似文献

The goal of the study was to determine the effectiveness of nitrification and denitrification and the kinetics of ammonia removal from a mixture of wastewater and anaerobic sludge digester supernatant in an SBR at limited oxygen concentration. In addition, the COD removal efficiency and sludge production were assessed. In the SBR cycle alternating aerobic and anaerobic phases occurred; in the aeration phase the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration was below 0.7 mg O2/L. The low DO concentration did not inhibit ammonia oxidation-nitrification and the efficiency was ca. 96-98%. However, a relatively high COD concentration in the effluent was detected. The values of Km and Vmax, calculated from the Michaelis-Menten equation, were 43 mg N-NH4/L and 15.64 mg N-NH4/L h, respectively. Activated sludge production was almost stable (0.62-0.66 g MLVSS/g COD). A high net biomass production resulted from a low specific biomass decay rate of 0.0015 d−1.  相似文献

In this study, the new anaerobic–anoxic/nitrifying/induced crystallization (A2N–IC) system was compared with anaerobic-anoxic/nitrifying (A2N) process to investigate nutrient removal performance under different influent COD and ammonia concentrations. Ammonia and COD removal rates were very stable in both processes, which were maintained at 84.9% and 86.6% when the influent ammonia varied from 30 mg L−1 to 45 mg L−1 and COD ranged from 250 mg L−1 to 300 mg L−1. The effluent phosphorus always maintained below 0.2 mg L−1 in A2N–IC, whereas in A2N the effluent phosphorus concentration was 0.4–1.7 mg L−1, demonstrating that A2N–IC is suitable to apply in a broader influent COD and ammonia concentration range. Under higher influent COD (300 mg L−1) or lower ammonia conditions (30 mg L−1), the main function of chemical induced crystallization was to coordinate better nutrient ratio for anoxic phosphorus uptake, whereas under high phosphorus concentration, it was to reduce phosphorus loading for biological system. Under the similar influent wastewater compositions, phosphorus release amounts were always lower in A2N–IC. To clarify the decrease procedure of phosphorus release in the A2N–IC, the equilibrium between chemical phosphorus removal and biological phosphorus removal in A2N–IC was analyzed by mass balance equations. During the long-term experiment, some undesirable phenomena were observed: the declining nitrification in post-aerobic tank and calcium phosphorus precipitation in the anaerobic tank. The reasons were analyzed; furthermore, the corresponding improvements were proposed. Nitrification effect could be enhanced in the post-aerobic tank, therefore ammonia removal rate could be increased; and biologically induced phosphorus precipitation could be inhibited by controlling pH at the anaerobic stage, so the phosphorus release and recovery could be improved.  相似文献

Performance of a wastewater treatment system utilizing a sulfur-redox reaction of microbes was investigated using a pilot-scale reactor that was fed with actual sewage. The system consisted of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and a down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor with a recirculation line. Consequently, the total CODCr (465 ± 147 mg L−1; total BOD of 207 ± 68 mg L−1) at the influent was reduced (70 ± 14 mg L−1; total BOD of 9 ± 2 mg L−1) at the DHS effluent under the conditions of an overall hydraulic retention time of 12 h, a recirculation ratio of 2, and a low-sewage temperature of 7.0 ± 2.8 °C. A microbial analysis revealed that sulfate-reducing bacteria contributed to the degradation of organic matter in the UASB reactor even in low temperatures. The utilized sulfur-redox reaction is applicable for low-strength wastewater treatment under low-temperature conditions.  相似文献

The acid biocoagulants produced from non-sterile lactic acid fermentation by Lactobacillus casei TISTR 1500 were used to settle colloidal protein, mainly casein, at the isoelectric point in dairy effluent prior to secondary treatment. High concentration of azo dye (Ponceau 4R) in the dairy wastewater and the stress of starvation decreased the efficiencies of the micro-aerobic SBR. Consequently, low casein recovery obtained and organic removal suffered a decline. The number of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) also declined from log 7.4 to log 5.30 in the system fed with 400 mg L−1 of the dye containing wastewater. The recovery of the system, however, showed that 25,000 mg COD L−1 influent with 200 mg L−1 of the dye maintained the growth of LAB in the range of log 7.74–8.12, with lactic and acetic production (2597 and 197 mg L−1) and 83% protein removal. The results in this study suggested that the inhibitory effects were compensated with high organic content feeding.  相似文献

An anaerobic digestion technique was applied to textile dye wastewater aiming at the colour and COD removal. Pet bottles of 5 L capacity were used as reactor which contains methanogenic sludge of half a liter capacity which was used for the treatment of combined synthetic textile dye and starch wastewater at different mixing ratios of 20:80, 30:70, 40:60, 50:50 and 60:40 with initial COD concentrations as 3520, 3440, 3360, 3264 and 3144 mg L−1, respectively. The reactor was maintained at room temperature (30 ± 3 °C) with initial pH of 7. The maximum COD and colour removal were 81.0% and 87.3% at an optimum mixing ratio of 30:70 of textile dye and starch wastewaters. Both Monod’s and Haldane’s models were adopted in this study. The kinetic constants of cell growth under Haldane’s model were satisfactory when compared to Monod’s model. The kinetic constants obtained by Haldane’s model were found to be in the range of μmax = 0.037-0.146 h−1, Ks = 651.04-1372.88 mg L−1 and Ki = 5681.81-18727.59 mg L−1.  相似文献

The treatment of reconstituted whey wastewater was performed in a 400 L digester at 20 °C, with an anaerobic digestion step, followed by a step of aerobic treatment at low oxygen concentration in the same digester. In a first set of 48 cycles, total cycle time (TC) of 2, 3 and 4 days were tested at varying organic loading rates (OLR). The COD removal reached 89 ± 4, 97 ± 3 and 98 ± 2% at TC of 2, 3 and 4 days and OLR of 0.56, 1.04 and 0.78 gCOD L−1 d−1, respectively. The activity of the biomass decreased for the methanogenic population, while increasing by 400% for the acidogens, demonstrating a displacement in the predominant trophic group in the biomass bed. A second set of 16 cycles was performed with higher soluble oxygen concentration in the bulk liquid (0.5 mg L−1) during the aerobic treatment at a TC of 2 days and an OLR of 1.55 gCOD L−1 d−1, with a soluble COD removal of 88 ± 3%. The biomass specific activities showed a compartmentalization of the trophic group with methanogenic activity maintained in the biomass bed and a high acidogenic activity in the suspended flocs.  相似文献

The single-culture Corynebacterium sp. DJ1 aerobic granules were cultivated and were utilized to degrade high-strength phenolic wastewater. These granules can degrade phenol at sufficient high rate without severe inhibitory effects up to phenol concentration of 2000 mg l−1. Furthermore, the kinetic characteristic noted for these granules yields a zero-order phenol degradation behavior with 500–1500 mg l−1 phenol, which facilitates reactor design and scale up. With added acetate to promote cell growth, this single-culture aerobic granular system yields the highest phenol degradation rate reported in granular literature.  相似文献

The present study deals with cultivation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) degrading aerobic granules in two SBR systems based on glucose and acetate as co-substrate. Biodegradation of TCP containing wastewater starting from 10 to 360 mg L−1 with more than 90% efficiency was achieved. Sludge volume index decreases as the operation proceeds to stabilize at 35 and 30 mL g−1 while MLVSS increases from 4 to 6.5 and 6.2 g L−1 for R1 (with glucose as co-substrate) and R2 (with sodium acetate as co-substrate), respectively. FTIR, GC and GC/MS spectral studies shows that the biodegradation occurred via chlorocatechol pathway and the cleavage may be at ortho-position. Haldane model for inhibitory substrate was applied to the system and it was observed that glucose fed granules have a high specific degradation rate and efficiency than acetate fed granules. Genotoxicity studies shows that effluent coming from SBRs was non-toxic.  相似文献

The present study investigates the formation of aerobic granular sludge in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed with palm oil mill effluent (POME). Stable granules were observed in the reactor with diameters between 2.0 and 4.0 mm at a chemical oxygen demand (COD) loading rate of 2.5 kg COD m−3 d−1. The biomass concentration was 7600 mg L−1 while the sludge volume index (SVI) was 31.3 mL g SS−1 indicating good biomass accumulation in the reactor and good settling properties of granular sludge, respectively. COD and ammonia removals were achieved at a maximum of 91.1% and 97.6%, respectively while color removal averaged at only 38%. This study provides insights on the development and the capabilities of aerobic granular sludge in POME treatment.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of light (visible light - 5800 lux, 24 h) or dark regime and aerobic or anaerobic condition on the decay of added oxolinic acid (OA) at 5, 10 and 20 mg L−1 in eel pond sediment. An asymptotic decaying exponential model Ct = Cmin + Co × exp (−k × t) was used to facilitate quantitative approach to OA transformation, where Ct is the concentration of OA after t days, Cmin the estimated level-off concentration of OA residue, Co the concentration of added OA and k the decaying coefficient. OA decayed faster under light (Cmin = 4.6 mg L−1) than under dark (Cmin = 7.8 mg L−1) and also decayed faster under aerobic (Cmin = 4.0 mg L−1) than under anaerobic condition (Cmin = 8.5 mg L−1). Cmin increased with Co. Sundrying and tilling eel pond bottom should be able to reduce OA residue significantly.  相似文献

Industrial wastewater treatment comprises several processes to fulfill the discharge permits or to enable the reuse of wastewater. For tannery wastewater, constructed wetlands (CWs) may be an interesting treatment option. Two-stage series of horizontal subsurface flow CWs with Phragmites australis (UP series) and Typha latifolia (UT series) provided high removal of organics from tannery wastewater, up to 88% of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) (from an inlet of 420 to 1000 mg L−1) and 92% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) (from an inlet of 808 to 2449 mg L−1), and of other contaminants, such as nitrogen, operating at hydraulic retention times of 2, 5 and 7 days. No significant (P < 0.05) differences in performance were found between both the series. Overall mass removals of up to 1294 kg COD ha−1 d−1 and 529 kg BOD5 ha−1 d−1 were achieved for a loading ranging from 242 to 1925 kg COD ha−1 d−1 and from 126 to 900 kg BOD5 ha−1 d−1. Plants were resilient to the conditions imposed, however P. australis exceeded T. latifolia in terms of propagation.  相似文献

The Iberian Peninsula encompasses more than 80% of the species richness of European aquatic ranunculi. The floristic diversity of the phytocoenosis characterised by aquatic Ranunculus and the main physical–chemical factors of the water were studied in 43 localities of the central Iberian Peninsula. Four aquatic Ranunculus communities are found in most of the aquatic environments. These are species-poor and have an uneven distribution: three species of Batrachium are heterophyllous and their communities are distributed in different aquatic ecosystems on silicated substrates; one species is homophyllous and its community occurs in various aquatic ecosystems with carbonated waters. In the Mediterranean climate, Ranunculus species are present in different habitats, as shown by the results of all the statistical analyses. Ranunculus trichophyllus communities occur in base-rich waters with a high buffering capacity (2273.44 ± 794.57 mg CaCO3 L−1) and a high concentration of cations (Ca2+, 121 ± 33.12 mg L−1; Mg2+, 71.64 ± 82.77 mg L−1), nitrates (2.89 ± 4.80 mg L−1), ammonium (2.19 ± 1.36 mg L−1) and sulphates (216.25 ± 218.54 mg L−1). Ranunculus penicillatus communities are found in flowing waters with a high concentration of phosphates (0.48 ± 0.6 mg L−1) and intermediate buffering capacity (683.66 ± 446.76 mg CaCO3 L−1). Both Ranunculus pseudofluitans and Ranunculus peltatus communities grow in waters with low buffering capacity (R. pseudofluitans, 385.91 ± 209.2 mg CaCO3 L−1; R. peltatus, 263.3 ± 180.36 mg CaCO3 L−1), and a low concentration of cations (R. pseudofluitans: Ca2+, 12.57 ± 9.42 mg L−1; Mg2+, 3.42 ± 1.67 mg L−1; R. peltatus: Ca2+, 15 ± 18.26 mg L−1; Mg2+, 6.26 ± 8.89 mg L−1) and nutrients (R. pseudofluitans: nitrates, 0.23 ± 0.2 mg L−1; phosphates, 0.09 ± 0.1 mg L−1; R. peltatus: nitrates, 0.19 ± 0.21 mg L−1; phosphates, 0.09 ± 0.12 mg L−1); the first in flowing waters, the latter in still waters.  相似文献

A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system is demonstrated to biologically remove nitrogen, phosphorus and chemical oxygen demand (COD) to very low levels from abattoir wastewater. Each 6 h cycle contained three anoxic/anaerobic and aerobic sub-cycles with wastewater fed at the beginning of each anoxic/anaerobic period. The step-feed strategy was applied to avoid high-level build-up of nitrate or nitrite during nitrification, and therefore to facilitate the creation of anaerobic conditions required for biological phosphorus removal. A high degree removal of total phosphorus (>98%), total nitrogen (>97%) and total COD (>95%) was consistently and reliably achieved after a 3-month start-up period. The concentrations of total phosphate and inorganic nitrogen in the effluent were consistently lower than 0.2 mg P l−1 and 8 mg N l−1, respectively. Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that the sludge was enriched in Accumulibacter spp. (20–40%), a known polyphosphate accumulating organism, whereas the known glycogen accumulating organisms were almost absent. The SBR received two streams of abattoir wastewater, namely the effluent from a full-scale anaerobic pond (75%) and the effluent from a lab-scale high-rate pre-fermentor (25%), both receiving raw abattoir wastewater as feed. The pond effluent contained approximately 250 mg N l−1 total nitrogen and 40 mg P l−1 of total phosphorus, but relatively low levels of soluble COD (around 500 mg l−1). The high-rate lab-scale pre-fermentor, operated at 37°C and with a sludge retention time of 1 day, proved to be a cheap and effective method for providing supplementary volatile fatty acids allowing for high-degree of biological nutrient removal from abattoir wastewater.  相似文献

The heavy use of fertilizers in agricultural lands can result in significant nitrate (NO3) loadings to the aquatic environment. We hypothesized that biological denitrification in agricultural ditches and streams could be enhanced by adding elemental sulfur (So) to the sediment layer, where it could act as a biofilm support and electron donor. Using a bench-scale stream mesocosm with a bed of So granules, we explored NO3 removal fluxes as a function of the effluent NO3 concentrations. With effluent NO3 ranging from 0.5 mg N L−1 to 4.1 mg N L−1, NO3 removal fluxes ranged from 228 mg N m−2 d−1 to 708 mg N m−2 d−1. This is as much as 100 times higher than for agricultural drainage streams. Sulfate (SO42−) production was high due to aerobic sulfur oxidation. Molecular studies demonstrated that the So amendment selected for Thiobacillus species, and that no special inoculum was required for establishing a So-based autotrophic denitrifying community. Modeling studies suggested that denitrification was diffusion limited, and advective flow through the bed would greatly enhance NO3 removal fluxes. Our results indicate that amendment with So is an effective means to stimulate denitrification in a stream environment. To minimize SO42− production, it may be better to place So deeper in the sediment layer.  相似文献

Biological kinetic (bio-kinetic) study of the anaerobic stabilization pond treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME) was carried out in a laboratory anaerobic bench scale reactor (ABSR). The reactor was operated at different feed flow-rates of 0.63, 0.76, 0.95, 1.27, 1.9 and 3.8 l of raw POME for a day. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) as influent substrates was selected for bio-kinetic study. The investigation showed that the growth yield (YG), specific biomass decay (b), maximum specific biomass growth rate (μmax), saturation constant (Ks) and critical retention time (Θc) were in the range of 0.990 g VSS/g CODremoved day, 0.024 day−1, 0.524 day−1, 203.433 g COD l−1 and 1.908 day, respectively.  相似文献

Biomass productivity of 350 mg DCW L−1 day−1 with a final biomass concentration of 3.15 g DCW L−1 was obtained with Neochloris oleoabundans grown in artificial wastewater at sodium nitrate and phosphate concentrations of 140 and 47 mg L−1, respectively, with undetectable levels of residual N and P in effluents. In secondary municipal wastewater effluents enriched with 70 mg N L−1, the alga achieved a final biomass concentration of 2.1 g DCW L−1 and a biomass productivity of 233.3 mg DCW L−1 day−1. While N removal was very sensitive to N:P ratio, P removal was independent of N:P ratio in the tested range. These results indicate that N. oleoabundans could potentially be employed for combined biofuel production and wastewater treatment.  相似文献

To achieve an appropriate mixture of ammonium and nitrite for anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX), 50% partial nitritation was optimized in a fixed bed biofilm reactor treating synthetic wastewater. Results suggested that 50% partial nitritation could be achieved by stepwise increases of influent NH4+-N at pH of 7.8 ± 0.2, temperature of 30 ± 1 °C and dissolved oxygen (DO) of 0.5-0.8 mg l−1. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) and influent alkalinity did significantly affect partial nitritation. At HRT 12 h, 50% partial nitritation could be kept stable, regardless of influent NH4+-N variation, by controlling the influent HCO3/NH4+ molar ratio at 1:1. The fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) results indicated the abundance of evolution of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and the nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) coincided well with the performance of partial nitritation. Furthermore, the AOB were highly affiliated with Nitrosomonas spp. and Nitrosospira spp. dominated (64.1%) in the biofilm with a compact structure during the stable 50% partial nitritation period.  相似文献

The present work was aimed at studying the efficiency of the combined process of biofiltration with ozonation to improve the quality of secondary effluent. The secondary effluent from the Dinapur Sewage Treatment Plant Varanasi, India was used in this work. The process of biofiltration with the plant species of Eichornia crassipes and Lemna minor, at a flow rate of 262 ml min−1 and plant density of 30 mg L−1 for 48 h, in combination with the process of ozonation with ozone dose of 10 mg L−1 and contact time of 5 min was applied. Results revealed that combined process was statistically most suitable for the highest degradation of physico-chemical and microbial parameters with improving BDOC value. The biofiltration process is able to remove highest percentage of toxic heavy metals from the secondary effluent without production of toxicity. This technique is highly recommendable for tropical wastewater where sewage is mixed with industrial effluents.  相似文献
