Brown trout (Salmo trutta) population of a remote high mountain lake (Lake Redó, Pyrenees, 2240 m above sea level) were studied during autumn using hydroacoustic techniques. This acoustic technique was for the first time used on fish at such high altitude in Spain. Sampling using multimesh nets fish catches and echosounding recording were carried out in September 1998. Mean density of fish was estimated to be 1.82 fish per 1000 m3 (597 fish ha–1). The results exhibited mainly a littoral habitat, with the brown trout being preferentially in the 10–25 m deep layer, where the water was warmer and the richness and diversity of macroinvertebrates higher. The sampling by hydroacoustic technique found a length frequency range of fish higher than the multimesh gill nets but both of them estimated similar fish proportion for the common length range. The more frequent target strength (TS) for the population was –38 dB (TS range –37 to –39 dB). Good correlation was found between TS frequency distribution obtained by echosounding and that predicted by means of a model based on the log of the fish total length from multimesh gill nets captures.  相似文献

Synopsis We studied vertical distribution, substrate preference and food choice of brown trout, Salmo trutta, from benthic gillnet catches at four littoral sampling locations in a Norwegian hydroelectric reservoir. The sampling locations had different bottom substrates; at one location the bottom substrate consisted of sand, while at the other three, substrates consisted of stones ranging 2–5 cm, 10–30 cm and 30–150 cm in diameter, respectively. Small-sized (< 160 cm) and intermediate-size (164–269 mm) brown trout were mainly caught close to the bottom (0–0.5 m above). Small-sized brown trout were caught in the highest frequency at the location with substrate consisting of 10–30 cm large stones. Intermediate-sized brown trout were also caught in highest frequency at this location, but were also caught in a high frequency at the location with sandy substrate. In contrast, the catches of large-sized ( 270 mm) brown trout did not vary with distance from the bottom or with substrate coarseness. The most important food items for the brown trout were aquatic insects, surface insects, Eurycercus lamellatus and crustacean zooplankton, mainly Daphnia longispina, Bythotrephes longimanus, and Holopedium gibberum. In accordance with the differences in vertical distribution, benthic food was more important to small than to large brown trout. We argue that small brown trout stayed close to the bottom to reduce aggressive behaviour from larger specimens, and that small brown trout were therefore more dependent on benthic food items. We also argue that the observed differences in substrate preference between the size groups of brown trout is explained by variation in access to shelter, visual isolation between individuals and benthic feeding conditions between locations.  相似文献

Synopsis The ability of adult rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) to recover from acute chlorine exposure was tested. Six separate tests were carried out in duplicate. Blood was collected from each duplicate group of fish at the beginning of the test, at the appearance of the chlorine-distress symptoms, and at 24 and 48 h after exposures. The total residual chlorine (TRC) concentrations used in these six tests were 1.67, 3.50, 1.10, 1.25, 1.02 and 0.0 mg 1–1, at water temperatures of 13.5, 14.6, 17.2, 22.6, 23.0 and 26.0° C, respectively. The cumulative fish mortality for these six tests at 48 h after exposure were 11.5, 100, 0.0, 67.1, 36.1 and 100 percent. Blood of chlorine stressed fish exhibited signs of hemoconcentration and hemolysis. All blood parameters with the exception of hemolysis returned to control levels within 24 hours after exporsure. High TRC concentrations in the range of 3.5 mg 1–1 at 14.0° C, and TRC of 1.25 and 1.02 mg 1–1 TRC at 23° C, significantly diminished the rainbow trout recovery.  相似文献

Synopsis The numbers of trout,Salmo trutta, in Granslev », Denmark, were estimated by the removal method on 18 dates from March 1974 to March 1976. Populations density varied from 0.39 to 0.74 trout m–2 in 1974–1975 and from 0.36 to 0.59 m–2 in 1975–1976 and at all times four or five year classes were present. The age structure of the population was unstable and the variable natural survival, immigration into and emigration from the study site could not be separated. An annual growth cycle with the most rapid growth for all year classes taking place from May to early August was found. Statistically significant differences between different years occurred in the growth of the 0,I and II age groups, but no evidence of density-dependent growth was found. The biomass ranged from 35.4 to 9.5 g m–2. The total mean annual biomass was 22.8 and 14.7 g m–2 in the two years and the II group made the greatest contribution, 44 and 48%, respectively. During 1975–1976 the mean annual biomass of each year class only was about two-thirds of that in 1974–1975. Annual production in the two years was 25.7 (range 24.7–28.5) and 12.6 g m–2 (range 11.7–15.0) and the II group accounted for about 46 and 38% of the production. In addition eel,Anguilla anguilla, produced about 0.5 g m–2 yr–2. The unstable age structure of the trout population was compared with trout populations from other streams. The importance of immigration as a recruitment process in middle and lower reaches of streams and of migrations as a mechanism to optimise utilization of the total stream habitat, as well as temperature as a factor controlling the growth rate are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Soft water of low buffer capacity was drawn from near the branchial surface of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) at 15°C, using opercular catheters, to determine pH changes in water passing over the gills. Latex masks allowed measurement of ventilation volume, and concentrations of carbon dioxide, oxygen, ammonia, and titratable base in expired water were compared to concentrations in inspired water. Water passing over the gills was more basic than inspired water if the inspired water was pH 4–6 (maximum increase: +0.7 pH units near pH 5). Expired water was more acidic than inspired water if the inspired water was pH 6–10 (maximum decrease: –1.7 pH units near pH 9). Ventilation volume (0.37 l·kg–1·min–1) and oxygen consumption (1.7 mmol·kg–1·h–1) were constant in the pH range 4.6–10.1, but both increased by 1.6–2.4× near pH 4. Carbon dioxide transfer near the gills was about 100 M, ammonia transfer about 15 M, and titratable base added at the gills was about 30 M. A theoretical model using CO2, titratable base, and ammonia added at the gills, the titration characteristics of the defined soft water medium, and aquatic equilibria for CO2 and ammonia, adequately explained the experimentally observed changes in pH near trout gills. Our observations and predictive model indicate that any gill contaminant whose toxicity varies with pH may be more or less toxic at the gills than predicted from bulk water chemistry alone.Abbreviations pH ex expired pH - pH in inspired pH  相似文献

Summary Acyl-CoA: lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase (LPCAT) (EC 2.3.1.23) activity was assayed in liver microsomes from rainbow trout,Salmo gairdneri, acclimated to 5°C and 20°C to assess its contribution to the temperature-induced restructuring of phospholipid acyl chain composition. The synthesis of phosphatidylcholine (PC) (from lyso-PC) was threefold the synthesis of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) (from lyso-PE) under similar assay conditions. LPCAT activity (i) displayed an absolute requirement for lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) and was enhanced by the presence of ATP, MgCl2 and CoA (which reduced the impact of endogenous acyl-CoA hydrolase activity by regenerating the acyl-CoA substrate) in the assay medium; (ii) remained linear with time up to 30 min; and (iii) increased linearly with microsomal protein concentration up to 0.2 mg/ml for the 20°C assay and 0.4 mg/ml for the 5°C assay. There was no difference in Km or Vmax values due to the acclimation history of the fish, but there were obvious differences due to assay temperature. The apparent Km values for LPC were 58.54±7.24 M and 12.26±2.14 M when assayed at 5°C and 20°C respectively; values for oleoyl-CoA were 9.11±0.78 M and 1.23±0.25 M under the same assay conditions. Activity was 1.99±0.31 nmol min–1 mg protein–1 when assayed at 5°C, and 3.8±0.45 nmol min–1 mg protein–1 when assayed at 20°C. These findings indicate that adjustments in the activity of LPCAT play no significant role in the temperature-induced restructuring of PC molecular species composition. However, the marked temperature dependence of the Km values for LPC and oleoyl CoA suggest that patterns of fatty acid incorporation (i.e. substrate preference) may vary with assay temperature, and in this way LPCAT could contribute to the restructuring response.Abbreviations PC phosphatidylcholine - PE phosphatidylethanolamine - LPCAT acyl-CoA: lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase - LPEAT acyl-CoA: lysophosphatidylethanolamine acyltransferase - LPC 1-palmitoyl,2-lysophosphatidylcholine  相似文献

Salmonids (Salmo salar, Salmo trutta) and mayflies (Baetis rhodani, Ecdyonurus venosus) which had been exposed to simulated episodes of low pH, and low pH with elevated aluminium, were examined histochemically for the presence of aluminium and mucus. The control fish and mayflies and those exposed to low pH did not stain for aluminium, although increased mucus production was demonstrated in fish gills. Trout and salmon exposed to aluminium at low pH exhibited extensive aluminium and mucus coating of the secondary gill lamellae. No mucus was produced by mayflies but aluminium was apparent on all parts of the body. Mean aluminium concentrations of digested fish gills were 2950 and 3050 g g–1 dry wt. for trout and salmon respectively, whilst for whole specimens of B. rhodani and E. venosus values were 1 200 and 3 175 g g–1 dry wt.  相似文献

The use of stream-margin habitat by age-0 salmonids has been studied, but differences in use among various types of habitat along stream margins has not been addressed. We described the nighttime use of habitat features by age-0 brown trout (Salmo trutta) among three types of stream-margin habitat late in the growing season (August–September) and assessed the extent to which use of habitat features within each type differed over the sampling period. Differences in water depths, water velocities, distances from shore, and substrate at the locations of fish along the margins of pools, the margins of riffles, and in backwaters were studied. Variation in habitat use also was observed during the study period as fish increased in length. Our observations are important considerations when developing habitat suitability criteria for assessment of instream-flow needs of age-0 brown trout.  相似文献

Summary Daily intramuscular injection of cortisol (4 mg kg–1 body weight) in rainbow trout,Salmo gairdneri, for 10 days caused significant increases in the number and individual apical surface area of gill chloride cells per mm2 of filament epithelium. Concomitantly, whole body influxes of sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl) increased. Acute (3 h) intra-arterial infusion of cortisol did not affect whole body Na+ or Cl influx. A significant correlation was observed between both Na+ and Cl influxes and the fractional apical surface area of filament chloride cells in control, sham (saline-injected) and experimental (cortisol-injected) fish. The chloride cells displayed similar ultrastructural modifications in trout undergoing cortisol treatment as in trout transferred to ion-deficient water. These findings suggest the existence of structure/function relationships in which branchial chloride cell morphology is an important determinant of Na+ and Cl transport capacity. We conclude that chronic cortisol treatment enhances whole body Na+ and Cl influxes by promoting proliferation of branchial chloride cells. The results of correlation analysis indicate that the chloride cell is an important site of NaCl uptake in freshwater rainbow trout.  相似文献

Pond cultivation of the subtropical, euryhaline macroscopic red algaGracilaria tenuisipitata var.liui Zhanget Xia was carried out in brackish seawater (6–7) in the Gryt archipelago on the east coast of Sweden, using four outdoor tanks of 30–40 m3. Growth rate and nutrient uptake in batch culture were measured with the aim of estimating the water purification capacity ofG. tenuisipitata in outdoor conditions. Its ability to withstand epiphytic infections was also studied. An average growth rate of 4 biomass increase per day was recorded during two seasons with a maximum growth rate of 9 d–1. The initial biomass was usually 1 kgFW m–3 (FW, fresh weight). The nutrient uptake capacity was on average ca. 1 g Ni kgFW–1 d–1 and 0.08 g Pi kgFW–1 d–1 and the uptake rates for NH4 +-N were higher than those for NO3 -N. Both the growth rate and the nutrient uptake rate were highest at the highest water temperature. Co-cultivation with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was tested: with trout fodder as the only nutrient inputG. tenuistipitata could grow and maintain low levels of Ni and Pi with optimum efficiency at a trout: alga ratio of 1:1 (w:w). Epiphytic growth of filamentous green and brown algae was limited, probably as a result of the high pH values caused by inorganic carbon uptake byG. tenuistipitata. The growth ofEnteromorpha intestinalis, the only significant epiphyte, was completely inhibited and the majority of plants died by a few days treatment with 100 µg 1–1 Cu2+, a concentration that did not severely affectG. tenuistipitata. We conclude thatG. tenuistipitata can be cultivated in outdoor ponds in southern Sweden during 5–6 months of the year using aerated or unaerated batch cultures and that wastewater from trout cultivation may be used as a nutrient source, resulting in purification with respect to N and P.  相似文献

Summary Na+, K+ exchanges were studied in isolated hepatocytes of the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri. Ouabain at 10–4 M produced maximal inhibition (95%) of K+ uptake and enhanced intracellular Na+ accumulation, showing that active fluxes account for a very large proportion of Na+ and K+ exchanges. Inhibition of the Na–K pump by ouabain was significant at low concentrations (10–8 M). When external K+ concentration was reduced from 7 mM to 0.5 mM, half maximum inhibition (IC50) of K+ uptake was obtained at a 22-fold lower concentration of ouabain confirming that ouabain and potassium compete at the same pump site. Time-course analysis of [3H]ouabain binding indicated a two-component kinetics: one component saturable and dependent on K+ concentration in the medium, the other linear and independent of external K+. The ouabain binding site number, determined by Scatchard plots, remained constant (ca. 2.5·105 per cell) and independent of the external K+ concentration (7, 0.5 or 0 mM), while the dissociation constant (KD) decreased from 4.2 M to 7.3 nM when K+ was removed from the Hank's medium. These ouabain binding sites are characterized by an exceptionally low turnover rate (400 min–1), as estimated from ouabain-sensitive K+ flux, in comparison to those described in other cell types of higher vertebrates. At each external K+ concentration studied, the inhibition of K+ uptake and ouabain binding measured as a function of ouabain concentration indicated a strict correlation between the degree of K pump inhibition and the amount of bound glycoside.  相似文献

Habitat utilization and the life history of browntrout Salmo trutta and Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were investigated in fivesympatric populations and five allopatric brown troutpopulations in Høylandet catchment, a atmosphaericlow deposition area in Mid Norway. There was asignificant inverse correlation in abundance ofepibenthic Arctic charr and brown trout in theselakes, indicating that the latter species is dominant. The largest numbers of sympatric brown trout andArctic charr were caught in epibenthic habitat. In twolakes, brown trout to some extent also occurredpelagically, while pelagic individuals of Arctic charrwere found in all five lakes. The main food items forboth epibenthic and pelagic brown trout wereterrestrial surface insects and chironomid pupae.Zooplankton was the primary food item for Arctic charrin both habitats. Although the age distribution wasvery different in the populations, neither speciesseem to suffer from recruitment failure. There was nosignificant difference in survival rates betweensympatric populations of brown trout and Arctic charr. We found a significant inverse correlation betweenepibenthic catches of brown trout and the mean weightof 4+ fish, the most abundant age group. However, ifusing weight data for three-year-old fish, no suchrelationship was found for Arctic charr. Brown troutand Arctic charr reached asymptotic lengths of197–364 mm and 259–321 mm, respectively. Both speciestypically reached sexual maturity at age 2–3, and nomaturation-induced mortality was evident. We concludethat fish populations in Høylandet lakes areregulated throughout their lifes by inter- andintraspecific competition.  相似文献

The isolation and characterization of the receptor for vitellogenin from follicle membranes of the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, is described. Follicle membrane proteins subjected to SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and subsequently to either protein staining or ligand blotting with radiolabelled vitellogenin (125iodine-vitellogenin) demonstrated that the vitellogenin receptor has an apparent molecular mass of 200 kD (probably comprising of two 100-kD subunits) under non-reducing conditions. The vitellogenin binding sites were identified as specific receptors: binding was saturable and the binding sites were both tissue specific to follicle membranes and exhibited ligand specificity. Scatchard analyses of specific binding data revealed a single class of binding sites with a high affinity for rainbow trout vitellogenin (K d=8.2·10-9 mol·1-1). Both brown trout, Salmo trutta, vitellogenin and carp, Cyprinus carpio, vitellogenin were able to displace the radiolabelled rainbow trout vitellogenin from its receptor, although they were less effective than rainbow trout vitellogenin.Abbreviations B max maximum number of binding sites available - BSA bovine serum albumin - bt-VTG brown trout vitellogenin - c-VTG earp vitellogenin - HEPES N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N-2-ethanesulfonic acid - K d dissociatian constant - NCM nitrocellulose membranes - PMSF phenylmethylsulphonylfluoride - rt-VTG rainbow trout vitellogenin - VTG vitellogenin  相似文献

Use of space and food by resident and migrant brown trout,Salmo trutta   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Synopsis Parr and resident forms of brown trout,Salmo trutta, from Vangsvatnet Lake, Norway live in freshwater, while migrant forms live in coastal waters during summer and in freshwater during winter. About 80% of parr and residents live at depths <5 m, smolts and migrants are more confined to near-surface water. Brown trout partly segregate by size, age and sex from spring through autumn. More than 90% of parr and residents in the tributaries are 0–2 years old, 2–14 cm in length, in the littoral zone 0–3 years old, 7–24 cm in length, and in the pelagic zone 2–6 years old, 18–32 cm in length. The mean body length of equal-aged fish increases from tributaries through littoral to pelagic zones in the lake. Smolts (2–7 years, 14–29 cm) leave the lake from April through August and return during September–October. Migrants (2–11 years, 23–67 cm) leave the take in April–May and return during August–September; sexually mature fish return earlier than immatures. Female brown trout are less stream-dwelling, but more migrant and pelagic than males. Most individuals in the lake population spend the winter in the littoral zone. In the tributaries, diet differs significantly between age-groups of parr; young fish feed on smaller food items than do older fish. In the lake, parr and residents living in the same habitats feed on the same food items. Littoral brown trout feed mainly on insect larvae and chironomid pupae, pelagic brown trout feed on zooplankton and surface insects. Migrants feed little while staying in freshwater, except for matures which feed on young salmonids and surface arthropods during the 2 first months after they had returned from coastal waters. The results are discussed in relation to growth possibilities and mortality risks of the different habitats.Reprint request to B. Jonsson.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine and compare the phenotypic variation in Çoruh trout (Salmo coruhensis), Rize trout (Salmo rizeensis), brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) and their native hybrids (S. rizeensis × S. t. fario; S. t. fario × S. coruhensis; S. rizeensis × S. coruhensis). The numbers and diameters of red and black spots were determined on operculum, fins and above and below the lateral line. The results from this study indicate that there were differences in spotting pattern, colour pattern or fin pigmentation traits between S. rizeensis, S. t. fario, S. coruhensis and their hybrids. Consequently, native S. rizeensis, S. t. fario and S. coruhensis were affected by interaction and phenotypic plastic aspects of traits in S. rizeensis were dominant in their hybrids (S. rizeensis × S. t. fario; S. rizeensis × S. coruhensis).  相似文献

Within the scope of the multidisciplinaryresearch project Valimar (1995–1999), thepresent study emphasizes the use ofhistopathological investigations to evaluatethe effects of the different chemical impactof two small streams on the general health andcondition of the two sentinel fish species, brown trout (Salmo trutta f.fario) and loach (Barbatula barbatula).Parasitological investigations were alsoincluded to assess a possible relationshipbetween toxicant exposure, parasitic load, andthe occurence of histopathological organchanges. According to the multitiered approachof the Valimar project, fish from the field, individuals exposed to stream water undersemi-field conditions, and fish fromlaboratory experiments were investigated.Under semi-field conditions, thehistopathological responses in brown troutproved to reflect the different levels ofcontamination of the two small streams moreclearly than those detected in loach. Whencaptured from the field, both fish speciesrevealed, in most cases, a higher degree ofhistopathological alterations than thoseindividuals exposed at the respective siteunder semi-field conditions. Simulation of thetoxic load of the more polluted stream in alaboratory experiment did not result in thesame kind of tissue lesions in brown trout asin the field and semi-field investigations.Whereas results from the laboratoryexperiments could be specified astoxicant-induced, the histopathologicalalterations in fish from both semi-field andfield studies represent stress responses whichintegrate the effects of various abiotic andbiotic stress factors including both toxicantsand parasitic diseases.  相似文献

A standard mechanical shock, by dropping, was applied to eggs of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) and Atlantic salmon (S. salar L) at several different stages of development to assess variation in sensitivity to mechanical shock during the course of development. Other experiments tested the effect of drifting along 10 m of experimental channel upon the survival of trout eggs at two stages of development.Survival to hatch in control batches of trout eggs and in batches which were given pre-shock handling but which were not shocked was generally high (c. 95%) and application of shock soon after fertilisation and water-hardening or after eyeing had little effect on survival. Trout eggs suffered mortality of 50 to 60% when given a shock of c. 8000 ergs at between 10 and 20% completion of development to median hatch. Observations on Atlantic salmon eggs suggested a similar pattern but were not conclusive.Trout eggs which drifted 10 m in an experimental channel at 10–20% completed development to median hatch suffered 45–56% mortality — similar to the rate observed in eggs given a shock of c. 8000 ergs. Similar drifting at 60–70% completed development to median hatch had no detectable effect on survival. There is some evidence that application of mechanical shock to trout eggs by dropping or by drift can sometimes modify hatching date.  相似文献

Summary The aims of theis study were to investigate the effects of surfactants on the -adrenergic responses of the arterio-arterial (lamellar) vascular pathway of isolated gills from the troutSalmo gairdneri. The resistance of the arterio-arterial vasculature was monitored by measuring the input pressure of isolated gills perfused at a constant flow and at constant efferent pressure. Specific -adrenergic stimulation with isoprenaline produced a dose-dependant reduction in vascular resistance which was mimicked by the presence of cyclic 8-(4-chlorophenylthio) adenosine-3: 5-monophosphate (8-cpt cyclic AMP). These results suggest that cyclic AMP is involved as an intracellular second messenger of -adrenergic regulatory responses of branchial haemodynamics.Surfactants in the perfusate at nominal concentrations of 1.0 mol l–1 (0.3–0.5 mg l–1) inhibited the response of the branchial tissue to isoprenaline but did not affect the response to 8-cpt cyclic AMP. This suggests that the surfactant effects are the result of events occurring within the cell membrane. Furthermore because the surfactants used affected the efficacy, rather than the affinity, of the isoprenaline response then the mechanism of action is unlikely to be an effect on agonist/receptor interaction but may be further along the stimulus response chain, perhaps affecting receptor/regulatory nucleotide/adenylate cyclase interaction or via direct inhibition of the cyclase itself.  相似文献
