It is argued that an alleged lectotype of the name Epipactis leptochila (designated in 1981) is actually a neotype, as the published plate in question did not appear in print until 14 years after the protologue. A herbarium specimen at BM represents original material that was used by Godfery when describing the E. leptochila, and in all probability the same is true for the original watercolour painting (now deposited at the Natural History Museum, London) from which the published plate was eventually reproduced. Therefore, a part of the herbarium specimen is designated as lectotype.

The name Cytisus proliferus L.f. is here considered perfectly acceptable and should not be replaced by Cytisus prolifer L.f. One specimen from The Natural History Museum, London is confirmed as the lectotype of Cytisus proliferus L.f. Two specimens from the collection of the Swiss botanist Hermann Christ from the Main Herbarium of the Zurich Botanical Garden were selected as lectotypes for Cytisus proliferus L.f. var. canariae H. Christ and Cytisus proliferus L.f. var. palmensis H. Christ. The name Cytisus proliferus Kit. is typified and a specimen from Paul Kitaibel's collection at the Botanical Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum is assigned as its lectotype.

The names Quercus ballota and Q. rotundifolia (Fagaceae), referring to taxa sometimes considered conspecific with the widely distributed Q. ilex, are discussed and typified. A specimen preserved at MPU is designated as the lectotype of Desfontaines's name Q. ballota. Lamarck's name Q. rotundifolia is neotypified using a specimen preserved at VAL, with several duplicates in other European herbaria.

桃花心木(S.mahagoni(L.)Jacq.)

The typification of Clematis viticella L. is discussed, and a lectotype designated from the Clifford Herbarium (BM). A standard specimen for C. viticella 'Purpurea Plena Elegans' has also been selected. Data from hybridization experiments and studies of natural distribution suggest that Clematis campaniflora Brotero is better treated as a subspecies, i.e. as C. viticella subsp. campaniflora (Brotero) Font Quer ex O. Bolòs & Vigo, than as either a species or variety.

The Nordic species of Corydalis sect. Corydalis are discussed. The name C. laxa has been applied to largeflowered forms of C. pumila , but also to C. solida and various hybrid derivates between them, and is superfluous as well as confusing. A lectotype for C. laxa is selected. The Baltic endemic Corydalis gotlandica is described. It is an allotetraploid derivative of C. solida and intermedia. Flora nordica notes no. 2.

The typification of the Linnaean name Ononis crispa and the related O. zschackei (Fabaceae) is discussed. Original material for O. crispa was traced at LINN, but found to be heterogeneous. In addition, the illustration by Magnol cited in the protologue represents O. aragonensis. The name is lectotypified using a specimen at LINN to preserve the current usage of the name and to avoid any ambiguity in the interpretation of the lectotype, an epitype is selected. Since no original material is extant for the name O. zschackei, a neotype is designated from a specimen preserved at P and collected in Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain).

Although Curcuma L. (Zingiberaceae) is a conserved name, with C. longa L. as its conserved type, the type of C. longa is still uncertain. Numerous discussions about the identity of the taxon called C. longa by Linnaeus have been followed by various attempts to rename turmeric, suggestions as how to settle the type and proposals to conserve the name from a later author in order to stabilize the situation. Unfortunately, none of the previous proposals can be upheld for reasons which are discussed in this article. A lectotype is selected from extant material examined by Linnaeus and an epitype collected near the type locality is designated here. The identity of C. longa is discussed and a colour plate of the species is included. Synonyms of C. longa and their types are discussed and notes on the variability of C. longa are provided.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 37–46.

Abstract  Because the original type material has been made available, Monomorium occidaneum Crawley, a species inquirenda in Heterick's revision of the Australian Monomorium , can now be regarded as a junior synonym of Monomorium leae Forel. In addition, the status of a primary type specimen of Monomorium micron Crawley cited in the same publication is altered from 'holotype' to 'syntype'. This specimen has now been designated a lectotype to ensure stability of the name.

The green alga Pedobesia lamourouxii (J. Agardh) Feldmann et al. (Bryopsidales) is reported from the northern Arabian Sea on the basis of collections from the Sultanate of Oman and Socotra Island (Yemen). Vegetative and sporangial plants as well as the ecology are described. These collections constitute the first record of this widely distributed species for the Indian Ocean. In the course of this study we discovered that Bryopsis simplex Kützing is an older taxonomic synonym, and thus we propose Pedobesia simplex (Kützing) comb. nov. as the correct name for this species. A specimen of Bryopsis simplex in the Leiden Herbarium (L) is designated as lectotype.

AKEROYD, J. R. & WALTERS, S. M. 1987. Flora Europaea: the background to the revision of Volume One. Flora Europaea, published 1964-80, is a synthetic catalogue of Europe's vascular plants. Its publication has provided a relatively stable taxonomic and nomenclatural framework for the study of the flora of the continent, and has stimulated much further research and publication. The revision of the first volume of Flora Europaea, at Reading University, has been necessary in order to accommodate new information, to satisfy the continued demand for a complete Flora of Europe, and to update the original text. The revision is being carried out in cooperation with other European and Mediterranean floristic projects.

Abstract

The subgenus Cymatium (Septa) is here restricted to species closely related to C. rubeculum (Linné, 1758). A lectotype is designated for C. rubeculum, neotypes are designated for C. hepaticum (Röding, 1798) and C. flaveolum (Röding, 1798), C. occidentale (Mörch, 1877) (= blacketi Iredale, 1936; = beui Garcia-Talavera, 1985) is recorded from the Indo-West Pacific, C. (Septa) marerubrum Garcia-Talavera, 1985 is ranked as a geographic subspecies of C. rubeculum, and three new taxa are named: C. (Septa) bibbeyi n. sp., Philippine Islands; C. (Septa) closeli n. sp., Indian Ocean; and C. (Septa) peasei n. sp., western Pacific. In the subgenus Cymatium (Ranularia), neotypes are designated for C. guttumium (Röding, 1798) and its synonyms, for C. moniliferum (A. Adams & Reeve, 1850), and for C. pyrulum (A. Adams & Reeve, 1850), a lectotype is designated for C. pseudopyrum (Martin, 1899) (a junior synonym of C. pyrulum), other species distinguished are C. encausticum (Reeve, 1844) and C. exile (Reeve, 1844), and new taxa named are C. andamanense n. sp., Andaman Islands, C. springsteeni n. sp., western Pacific and Red Sea, and C. sinense arthuri n. subsp., Red Sea. Other Ranellidae named are Sassia (Sassia) ponderi n. sp., Queensland, and Distorsio (Distorsio) euconstricta n. sp., Indian Ocean and southwest Pacific. A lectotype selected for Murex reticularis Linné, 1758 is a specimen of the species usually known as Distorsio reticulata (Röding, 1798).

In Bursa (Bursa), a lectotype is designated for B. grayana Dunker, 1862 (= B. bufoniopsis Maury, 1917; = B. pacamoni Matthews & Coelho, 1971), western Atlantic, and the similar new Oman to Philippines species B. davidboschi is named. Other Bursa taxa named are B. (Colubrellina) quirihorai n. sp., Philippines, and B. (Colubrellina) latitudo fosteri n. subsp., Philippines. In Bufonaria (Bufonaria), a lectotype designated for Murex rana Linné, 1758 confirms that as the name for the most common western Pacific species, a lectotype designated for Ranella crumena Lamarck, 1816 confirms that as the name for the most common Indian Ocean species, B. elegans (Beck in G. B. Sowerby II, 1836) is illustrated, and the new western Pacific species B. perelegans is named; the four similar species B. nobilis (Reeve, 1844), B. margaritula (Deshayes, 1832), B. gnorima (Melville, 1918), and B. thersites (Redfield, 1846) are distinguished, and the new Madagascar to Philippines species B. ignobilis is named. In Tutufa (Tutufella), the newly named species T. boholica occurs with T. rubeta (Linné, 1758) in deep water in the Philippine Islands.

Using the newly-completed second edition of the first volume of Flora Europaea as a starting-point, the author, a member (until 1993) of the Flora Europaea Editorial Committee, reviews the aims and scope of the whole project, and considers what influence it has had on European vascular plant taxonomy in the post-war period. The prospects of completing the second edition are discussed, and finally some comment is made on the present difficulties for taxonomists
