For the leaf succulent Agave deserti and the stem succulent Ferocactus acanthodes, increasing the ambient CO2 level from 350 microliters per liter to 650 microliters per liter immediately increased daytime net CO2 uptake about 30% while leaving nighttime net CO2 uptake of these Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plants approximately unchanged. A similar enhancement of about 30% was found in dry weight gain over 1 year when the plants were grown at 650 microliters CO2 per liter compared with 350 microliters per liter. Based on these results plus those at 500 microliters per liter, net CO2 uptake over 24-hour periods and dry weight productivity of these two CAM succulents is predicted to increase an average of about 1% for each 10 microliters per liter rise in ambient CO2 level up to 650 microliters per liter.  相似文献

Greenhouse-grown pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan, [L.] Millsp.; cultivar UW-10) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata, [L.] Walp.; cultivar California No. 5) were well-watered (control) or subjected to low water potential by withholding water to compare their modes of adaptation to water-limited conditions. Leaf CO2 exchange rate (CER), leaf diffusive conductance to CO2 (gl), and CO2 concentration in the leaf intercellular air space (Ci) were determined at various CO2 concentrations and photon flux densities (PFD) of photosynthetically active radiation (400 to 700 nanometer). In cowpea, gl declined to less than 15% of controls and total water potential (ψw) at midafternoon declined to −0.8 megapascal after 5 days of withholding water, whereas gl in pigeonpea was about 40% of controls even though midafternoon ψw was −1.9 megapascal. After 8 days of withholding water, ψw at midafternoon declined to −0.9 and −2.4 megapascals in cowpea and pigeonpea, respectively. The solute component of water potential (ψs) decreased substantially less in cowpea than pigeonpea. Photosynthetic CER at saturation photon flux density (PFD) and ambient external CO2 concentration (360 microliters per liter) on day 5 of withholding decreased by 83 and 55% in cowpea and pigeonpea, respectively. When measured at external, CO2 concentration in bulk air of 360 microliters per liter, the CER of cowpea had fully recovered to control levels 3 days after rewatering; however, at 970 microliters per liter the PFD-saturated CERs of both species were substantially lower than in controls, indicating residual impairment. In stressed plants of both species the CER responses to Ci from 250 to 600 microliters per liter indicated that a substantial nonstomatal inhibition of CER had occurred. Although the sensitivity of gl to water limitation in cowpea suggested a dehydration avoidance response, parallel measurements of CER at various Ci and PFD indicated that photosynthetic activity of cowpea mesophyll was substantially inhibited by the water-limited treatment.  相似文献

The short term effects of increased levels of CO2 on gas exchange of leaves of bigtooth aspen (Populus grandidentata Michx.) were studied at the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, MI. Leaf gas exchange was measured in situ in the upper half of the canopy, 12 to 14 meters above ground. In 1900 microliters per liter CO2, maximum CO2 exchange rate (CER) in saturating light was increased by 151% relative to CER in 320 microliters per liter CO2. The temperature optimum for CER shifted from 25°C in 320 microliters per liter CO2 to 37°C in 1900 microliters per liter CO2. In saturating light, increasing CO2 level over the range 60 to 1900 microliters per liter increased CER, decreased stomatal conductance, and increased leaf water use efficiency. The initial slope of the CO2 response curve of CER was not significantly different at 20 and 30°C leaf temperatures, although the slope did decline significantly during leaf senescence. In 1900 microliters per liter CO2, CER increased with increasing light. The light saturation point and maximum CER were higher in 30°C than in 20°C, although there was little effect of temperature in low light. The experimental results are consistent with patterns seen in laboratory studies of other C3 species and define the parameters required by some models of aspen CER in the field.  相似文献

One-year-old plants of the CAM leaf succulent Agave vilmoriniana Berger were grown outdoors at Riverside, California. Potted plants were acclimated to CO2-enrichment (about 750 microliters per liter) by growth for 2 weeks in an open-top polyethylene chamber. Control plants were grown nearby where the ambient CO2 concentration was about 370 microliters per liter. When the plants were well watered, CO2-induced differences in stomatal conductances and CO2 assimilation rates over the entire 24-hour period were not large. There was a large nocturnal acidification in both CO2 treatments and insignificant differences in leaf chlorophyll content. Well watered plants maintained water potentials of −0.3 to −0.4 megapascals. When other plants were allowed to dry to water potentials of −1.2 to −1.7 megapascals, stomatal conductances and CO2 uptake rates were reduced in magnitude, with the biggest difference in Phase IV photosynthesis. The minor nocturnal response to CO2 by this species is interpreted to indicate saturated, or nearly saturated, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity at current atmospheric CO2 concentrations. CO2-enhanced diurnal activity of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase activity remains a possibility.  相似文献

The rate of CO2 assimilation and levels of metabolites of the C4 cycle and reductive pentose phosphate pathway in attached leaves of maize (Zea mays L.) were measured over a range of light intensity from 0 to 1,900 microEinsteins per square meter per second under a saturated CO2 concentration of 350 microliters per liter and a limiting CO2 concentration of 133 microliters per liter. The level of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) stayed almost constant (around 60 nanomoles per milligram chlorophyll [Chl]) from low to high light intensities under 350 microliters per liter. Levels of 3-phosphoglycerate (PGA) increased from 100 to 650 nanomoles per milligram Chl under 350 microliters per liter CO2 with increasing light intensity. The calculated RuBP concentration of 6 millimolar (corresponded to 60 nanomoles per milligram Chl) was about two times above the estimated RuBP binding-site concentration on ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) of ~2.6 millimolar in maize bundle sheath chloroplasts in the light. The ratio of RuBP/PGA increased with decreasing light intensity under 350 microliters per liter CO2. These results suggest that RuBP carboxylation is under control of light intensity possibly due to a limited supply of CO2 to Rubisco through the C4 cycle whose activity is highly dependent on light intensity. Pyruvate level increased with increasing light intensity as long as photosynthesis rate increased. A positive relationship between levels of PGA and those of pyruvate during steady-state photosynthesis under various conditions suggests that an elevated concentration of PGA increases the carbon input into the C4 cycle through the conversion of PGA to PEP and consequently the level of total intermediates of the C4 cycle can be raised to mediate higher photosynthesis rate.  相似文献

Greenhouse-grown plants of Xanthium strumarium L. were exposed in a growth cabinet to 10 C during days and 5 C during nights for periods of up to 120 hours. Subsequently, CO2 exchange, transpiration, and leaf temperature were measured on attached leaves and in leaf sections at 25 or 30 C, 19 C dew point of the air, 61 milliwatts per square centimeter irradiance, and CO2 concentrations between 0 and 1000 microliters per liter ambient air. Net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance decreased and dark respiration increased with increasing duration of prechilling. The reduction in net photosynthesis was not a consequence of decreased stomatal conductance because the intercellular CO2 concentration in prechilled leaves was equal to or greater than that in greenhouse-grown controls. The intercellular CO2 concentration at which one-half maximum net photosynthesis occurred remained the same in prechilled leaves and controls (175 to 190 microliters per liter). Stomata of the control plants responded to changes in the CO2 concentration of the air only slightly. Prechilling for 24 hours or more sensitized stomata to CO2; they responded to changes in CO2 concentration in the range from 100 to 1000 microliters per liter.  相似文献

Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv Vedettos and Lycopersicon chmielewskii Rick, LA 1028, were exposed to two CO2 concentrations (330 or 900 microliters per liter) for 10 weeks. The elevated CO2 concentrations increased the initial ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) activity of both species for the first 5 weeks of treatment but the difference did not persist during the last 5 weeks. The activity of Mg2+-CO2-activated Rubisco was higher in 900 microliters per liter for the first 2 weeks but declined sharply thereafter. After 10 weeks, leaves grown at 330 microliters per liter CO2 had about twice the Rubisco activity compared with those grown at 900 microliters per liter CO2. The two species showed the same trend to Rubisco declines under high CO2 concentrations. The percent activation of Rubisco was always higher under high CO2. The phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase) activity measured in tomato leaves averaged 7.9% of the total Rubisco. PEPCase showed a similar trend with time as the initial Rubisco but with no significant difference between nonenriched and CO2-enriched plants. Long-term exposure of tomato plants to high CO2 was previously shown to induce a decline of photosynthetic efficiency. Based on the current study and on previous results, we propose that the decline of activated Rubisco is the main cause of the acclimation of tomato plants to high CO2 concentrations.  相似文献

Growth at an elevated CO2 concentration resulted in an enhanced capacity for soybean (Glycine max L. Merr. cv Bragg) leaflet photosynthesis. Plants were grown from seed in outdoor controlled-environment chambers under natural solar irradiance. Photosynthetic rates, measured during the seed filling stage, were up to 150% greater with leaflets grown at 660 compared to 330 microliters of CO2 per liter when measured across a range of intercellular CO2 concentrations and irradiance. Soybean plants grown at elevated CO2 concentrations had heavier pod weights per plant, 44% heavier with 660 compared to 330 microliters of CO2 per liter grown plants, and also greater specific leaf weights. Ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rubisco) activity showed no response (mean activity of 96 micromoles of CO2 per square meter per second expressed on a leaflet area basis) to short-term (~1 hour) exposures to a range of CO2 concentrations (110-880 microliters per liter), nor was a response of activity (mean activity of 1.01 micromoles of CO2 per minute per milligram of protein) to growth CO2 concentration (160-990 microliters per liter) observed. The amount of rubisco protein was constant, as growth CO2 concentration was varied, and averaged 55% of the total leaflet soluble protein. Although CO2 is required for activation of rubisco, results indicated that within the range of CO2 concentrations used (110-990 microliters per liter), rubisco activity in soybean leaflets, in the light, was not regulated by CO2.  相似文献

Interaction of water supply and N in wheat   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6       下载免费PDF全文
Morgan JA 《Plant physiology》1984,76(1):112-117
The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of N nutrition and water stress on stomatal behavior and CO2 exchange rate in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Olaf). Wheat plants were grown hydroponically with high (100 milligrams per liter) and low (10 milligrams per liter) N. When plants were 38 days old, a 24-day water stress cycle was begun. A gradual increase in nutrient solution osmotic pressure from 0.03 to 1.95 mega Pascals was achieved by incremental additions of PEG-6,000. Plants in both N treatments adjusted osmotically, although leaf water potential was consistently lower and relative water content greater for low N plants in the first half of the stress cycle. Leaf conductance of high N plants appeared greater than that of low N plants at high water potentials, but showed greater sensitivity to reductions in water potential as indicated by earlier stomatal closure during the stress cycle. The apparent greater stomatal sensitivity of high N plants was associated with a curvilinear relationship between leaf conductance and leaf water potential; low N plants exhibited more of a threshold response. Trends in [CO2]INT throughout the stress cycle indicated nonstomatal effects of water stress on CO2 exchange rate were greater in high N plants. Although estimates of [CO2]INT were generally lower in high N plants, they were relatively insensitive to leaf water potential-induced changes in leaf conductance. In contrast, [CO2]INT of low N plants dropped concomitantly with leaf conductance at low leaf water potentials. Oxygen response of CO2 exchange rate for both treatments was affected less by reductions in water potential than was CO2 exchange rate at 2.5% O2, suggesting that CO2 assimilation capacity of the leaves was affected more by reductions in leaf water potential than were processes related to photorespiration.  相似文献

The physiological and physical components of the feedback loop involving intercellular CO2 concentration (ci) and stomata are identified. The loop gain (G) is a measure of the degree of homeostasis in a negative feedback loop [the expression 1/(1-G) represents the fraction to which feedback reduces a perturbance]. Estimates are given for the effects of G on responses of stomata and ci to changes in ambient CO2 concentration, light intensity, and perturbations in the water relations of a leaf. At normal ambient CO2 concentration, the gain of the loop involving stomatal conductance and ci was found to be −2.2 in field-grown Zea mays, −3.6 if plants of this species were grown in a growth chamber, and zero in well watered Xanthium strumarium in the vegetative state.  相似文献

The major short term stomatal response of Agave deserti was to temperature; increases in leaf temperature led to decreases in water vapor conductance for stomatal opening during the daytime (C3 mode) as well as at night (Crassulacean acid metabolism or CAM mode). Hourly changes in the water vapor concentration drop from leaf to air had no significant stomatal effect in either mode. Stomatal responses to external CO2 levels up to 800 microliters per liter were not significant after 15 minutes and only moderate after a few hours, suggesting that CO2 effects on open stomates of this succulent were indirect in both CAM and C3 modes.  相似文献

The relationship between net photosynthesis and CO2 concentration was investigated for four species of lichen using an infrared gas analyzer operating in a closed loop system. All species showed a linear relationship at low CO2 levels (100 microliters per liter) with CO2 saturation levels being in excess of 400 microliters per liter. Detailed studies of Sticta latifrons showed a strong influence of thallus water content which resulted in the net photosynthetic response at high water contents still being nearly linear at 1000 microliters per liter CO2. Very low CO2 compensation values (5 microliters per liter) were obtained under some conditions but the value varied between thalli and with thallus water content. The results differ from previous studies which reported low CO2 saturation levels (200 microliters per liter) and no apparent effect of water content. It is suggested that some of these differences may result from the use of a discrete sampling injection infrared gas analyzer system in the earlier studies and an assessment is made of the influence of nonsaturating CO2 levels, lack of cuvette ventilation, and data presentation for this technique.  相似文献

Young bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Seafarer) grew faster in air enriched with CO2 (1200 microliters per liter) than in ambient CO2 (330 microliters per liter). However, by 7 days when increases in overall growth (dry weight, leaf area) were visible, there was a significant decline (about 25%) in the leaf mineral content (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) and a drop in the activity of two enzymes of carbon fixation, carbonic anhydrase and ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase under high CO2. Although the activity of neither enzyme was altered in young, expanding leaves during the acclimation period, in mature leaves the activity of carbonic anhydrase was reduced 95% compared with a decline of 50% in ambient CO2. The drop in RuBP carboxylase was less extreme with 40% of the initial activity retained in the high CO2 compared with 50% in the ambient atmosphere. While CO2 enrichment might alter the flow of carbon into the glycolate pathway by modifying the activities of carbonic anhydrase or RuBP carboxylase, there is no early change in the ability of photosynthetic tissue to oxidize glycolate to CO2.  相似文献

A role of the guard cell chloroplasts in the CO2 response of stomata was investigated through a comparison of the leaf gas exchange characteristics of two closely related orchids: Paphiopedilum harrisianum, which lacks guard cell chloroplasts and Phragmipedium longifolium, which has chlorophyllous guard cells. Leaves of both species had an apparent quantum yield for assimilation of about 0.05, with photosynthesis saturating at 0.300 to 0.400 millimoles per square meter per second. CO2 curves were obtained by measuring steady-state assimilation and stomatal conductance under 0.180 or 0.053 millimoles per square meter per second white light, or darkness, at 0 to 400 microliters per liter ambient CO2. The response of assimilation to changes in CO2 was similar in the two species, but the response of conductance was consistently weaker in Paphiopedilum than in Phragmipedium. The data suggest involvement of guard cell chloroplasts in the stomatal response to CO2 and in the coupling of assimilation and conductance in the intact leaf.  相似文献

The response of apparent photosynthesis to N nutrition was studied in the C3 grass, tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), in the C4 species Panicum maximum Jacq., and in Panicum milioides Nees ex Trin., a species with characteristics intermediate between C3 and C4 photosynthetic types. Plants were grown in culture solution containing 1, 5, 50, and 200 milligrams N per liter. Apparent photosynthesis was measured on the youngest fully expanded leaves at 320 microliters of CO2 per liter of air and 21% O2. Leaf conductance was calculated from transpiration measurements, and CO2 compensation concentrations were also estimated. Several leaf anatomical characteristics were studied on plastic-embedded material. Leaf N content was determined on leaves which were used in photosynthesis measurements.  相似文献

Carbon exchange capacity of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) germinated and grown in controlled environment chambers at 1000 microliters per liter CO2 decreased from the vegetative growth stage to the fruiting stage, during which time capacity of plants grown at 350 microliters per liter increased. Carbon exchange rates (CERs) measured under growth conditions during the fruiting period were, in fact, lower in plants grown at 1000 microliters per liter CO2 than those grown at 350. Progressive decreases in CERs in 1000 microliters per liter plants were associated with decreasing stomatal conductances and activities of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase and carbonic anhydrase. Leaf starch concentrations were higher in 1000 microliters per liter CO2 grown-plants than in 350 microliters per liter grown plants but calcium and nitrogen concentrations were lower, the greatest difference occurring at flowering. Sucrose synthase and sucrose-P-synthase activities were similar in 1000 microliters per liter compared to 350 microliters per liter plants during vegetative growth and flowering but higher in 350 microliters per liter plants at fruiting. The decreased carbon exchange rates observed in this cultivar at 1000 microliters per liter CO2 could explain the lack of any yield increase (MM Peet 1986 Plant Physiol 80: 59-62) when compared with plants grown at 350 microliters per liter.  相似文献

Numerous net photosynthetic and dark respiratory measurements were made over a period of 4 years on leaves of 24 sour orange (Citrus aurantium) trees; 8 of them growing in ambient air at a mean CO2 concentration of 400 microliters per liter, and 16 growing in air enriched with CO2 to concentrations approaching 1000 microliters per liter. Over this CO2 concentration range, net photosynthesis increased linearly with CO2 by more than 200%, whereas dark respiration decreased linearly to only 20% of its initial value. These results, together with those of a comprehensive fine-root biomass determination and two independent aboveground trunk and branch volume inventories, suggest that a doubling of the air's current mean CO2 concentration of 360 microliters per liter would enhance the growth of the trees by a factor of 3.8.  相似文献

Maize and grain sorghum seeds were sown in pots and grown for 39 days in sunlit controlled-environment chambers at 360 (ambient) and 720 (double-ambient, elevated) μmol mol−1 carbon dioxide concentrations [CO2]. Canopy net photosynthesis (PS) and evapotranspiration (TR) was measured throughout and summarized daily from 08:00 to 17:00 h Eastern Standard Time. Irrigation was withheld from matched pairs of treatments starting on 26 days after sowing (DAS). By 35 DAS, cumulative PS of drought-stress maize, compared to well-watered plants, was 41% lower under ambient [CO2] but only 13% lower under elevated [CO2]. In contrast, by 35 DAS, cumulative PS of drought-stress grain sorghum, compared to well-watered plants, was only 9% lower under ambient [CO2] and 7% lower under elevated [CO2]. During the 27-35 DAS drought period, water use efficiency (WUE, mol CO2 Kmol−1 H2O), was 3.99, 3.88, 5.50, and 8.65 for maize and 3.75, 4.43, 5.26, and 9.94 for grain sorghum, for ambient-[CO2] well-watered, ambient-[CO2] stressed, elevated-[CO2] well-watered and elevated-[CO2] stressed plants, respectively. Young plants of maize and sorghum used water more efficiently at elevated [CO2] than at ambient [CO2], especially under drought. Reductions in biomass by drought for young maize and grain sorghum plants were 42 and 36% at ambient [CO2], compared to 18 and 14% at elevated [CO2], respectively. Results of our water stress experiment demonstrated that maintenance of relatively high canopy photosynthetic rates in the face of decreased transpiration rates enhanced WUE in plants grown at elevated [CO2]. This confirms experimental evidence and conceptual models that suggest that an increase of intercellular [CO2] (or a sustained intercellular [CO2]) in the face of decreased stomatal conductance results in relative increases of growth of C4 plants. In short, drought stress in C4 crop plants can be ameliorated at elevated [CO2] as a result of lower stomatal conductance and sustaining intercellular [CO2]. Furthermore, less water might be required for C4 crops in future higher CO2 atmospheres, assuming weather and climate similar to present conditions.  相似文献

Photosynthesis and Growth of Water Hyacinth under CO(2) Enrichment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes [Mart.] Solms) plants were grown in environmental chambers at ambient and enriched CO2 levels (330 and 600 microliters CO2 per liter). Daughter plants (ramets) produced in the enriched CO2 gained 39% greater dry weight than those at ambient CO2, but the original mother plants did not. The CO2 enrichment increased the number of leaves per ramet and leaf area index, but did not significantly increase leaf size or the number of ramets formed. Flower production was increased 147%. The elevated CO2 increased the net photosynthetic rate of the mother plants by 40%, but this was not maintained as the plants acclimated to the higher CO2 level. After 14 days at the elevated CO2, leaf resistance increased and transpiration decreased, especially from the adaxial leaf surface. After 4 weeks in elevated as compared to ambient CO2, ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase activity was 40% less, soluble protein content 49% less, and chlorophyll content 26% less; whereas starch content was 40% greater. Although at a given CO2 level the enriched CO2 plants had only half the net photosynthetic rate of their counterparts grown at ambient CO2, they showed similar internal CO2 concentrations. This suggested that the decreased supply of CO2 to the mesophyll, as a result of the increased stomatal resistance, was counterbalanced by a decreased utilization of CO2. Photorespiration and dark respiration were lower, such that the CO2 compensation point was not altered. The photosynthetic light and CO2 saturation points were not greatly changed, nor was the O2 inhibition of photosynthesis (measured at 330 microliters CO2 per liter). It appears that with CO2 enrichment the temporary increase in net photosynthesis produced larger ramets. After acclimation, the greater total ramet leaf area more than compensated for the lower net photosynthetic rate on a unit leaf area basis, and resulted in a sustained improvement in dry weight gain.  相似文献

Photosynthetic carbon metabolism was characterized in four photoautotrophic cell suspension cultures. There was no apparent difference between two soybean (Glycine max) and one cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) cell line which required 5% CO2 for growth, and a unique cotton cell line that grows at ambient CO2 (660 microliters per liter). Photosynthetic characteristics in all four lines were more like C3 mesophyll leaf cells than the cell suspension cultures previously studied. The pattern of 14C-labeling reflected the high ratio of ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase to phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity and showed that CO2 fixation occurred primarily by the C3 pathway. Photorespiration occurred at 330 microliters per liter CO2, 21% O2 as indicated by the synthesis of high levels of 14C-labeled glycine and serine in a pulse-chase experiment and by oxygen inhibition of CO2 fixation. Short-term CO2 fixation in the presence and absence of carbonic anhydrase showed CO2, not HCO3, to be the main source of inorganic carbon taken up by the low CO2-requiring cotton cells. The cells did not have a CO2-concentrating mechanism as indicated by silicone oil centrifugation experiments. Carbonic anhydrase was absent in the low CO2-requiring cotton cells, present in the high CO2-requiring soybean cell lines, and absent in other high CO2 cell lines examined. Thus, the presence of carbonic anhydrase is not an essential requirement for photoautotrophy in cell suspension cultures which grow at either high or low CO2 concentrations.  相似文献
