Low cost treatment of polluted wastewater has become a serious challenge in most of the urban areas of developing countries. The present study was undertaken to investigate the potential of Canna lily towards removal of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus from wastewater under sub-tropical conditions. A constructed wetland (CW) cell supporting vegetative layer of Canna lily was used to treat wastewater having high strength of CNP. Removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD3) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) varied between 69.8–96.4% and 63.6–99.1%, respectively. C. lily could efficiently remove carbon from a difficult to degrade wastewater at COD:BOD ratio of 24.4. Simultaneous reduction in TKN and nitrate pointed to good nitrification rates, and efficient plant assimilation as the dominant nutrient removal mechanism in the present study. Suitable Indian agro-climatic conditions favored plant growth and no evident stress over the Canna plant was observed. High removal rate of 809.8 mg/m2-day for TKN, 15.0 mg/m2-day for nitrate, and 164.2 mg/m2-day for phosphate suggests for a possible use of Canna-based CW for wastewater treatment for small, rural, and remote Indian communities.  相似文献

A full-scale constructed wetlands system with a total area of 80 ha and treatment capability of 2.0 × 104 m3 d−1 was completed in October 1998 in Rongcheng, Shandong Province, China. To evaluate wastewater treatment effectiveness and seasonal performance of the system, water samples were collected and analyzed from January 1999 to December 2004. Comparison of mean inlet and outlet concentrations showed that the constructed wetland system could effectively reduce the output of SS (71.8 ± 8.4%), BOD5 (70.4 ± 9.6%), COD (62.2 ± 10.1%), total coliform (99.7%) and fecal coliform (99.6%). However, the percent reduction of ammonia nitrogen was relatively low (40.6 ± 15.3%), and total phosphorus showed the least efficient reduction (29.6 ± 12.8%). BOD5, COD, ammonia nitrogen, and total phosphorus removal efficiencies displayed seasonal variations. BOD5 and COD removal was more efficient in spring and summer than in autumn and winter whereas ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus removal was more efficient in summer and autumn than in spring and winter. Annual variation analysis shows that COD, BOD5, and ammonia nitrogen reduction efficiencies increased from 1999 to 2004. In contrast, mean total phosphorus reduction efficiency did not change from 2001 to 2002 and began to decrease from 2003 onwards.  相似文献

Two constructed wetlands, one with Azolla pinnata plant (CW1) and the other without (CW2) for treating domestic wastewaters were developed. Fifteen water parameters which include: Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Total Phosphorus (TP), Total Nitrogen (TN), Ammoniacal Nitrogen (NH3N), Turbidity, pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Iron (Fe), Magnesium (Mg), Manganese (Mn), and heavy metals such as Lead (Pb) and Zinc (Zn) were analyzed using standard laboratory procedures. The experiments were conducted in two (dry and wet) seasons simultaneously. Results showed considerable reductions in all parameters and metals including Zn in CW1 compared with CW2 in the two seasons considered while Pb and Mn were not detected throughout the study. Zn concentration levels reduced significantly in both seasons just as removal efficiencies of 70.03% and 64.51% were recorded for CW1 while 35.17% and 33.45% were recorded for CW2 in both seasons. There were no significant differences in the removal efficiencies of Fe in both seasons as 99.55%, 59.09%, 88.89%, and 53.56% were recorded in CW1 and CW2 respectively. Azolla pinnata has proved effective in domestic wastewater phytoremediation studies.  相似文献

Centralized wastewater treatment systems require sophisticated technologies and skilled manpower for their operation and maintenance (O&M). These systems have huge construction as well as O&M costs. Therefore, a Decentralized Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS) rather than a centralized system might be especially beneficial in developing countries. A model for DEWATS is developed in Nepal with Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) and hybrid Constructed Wetland (CW). The DEWATS treats high-strength wastewater from 80 households (400 PE). This paper summarizes the performance of the DEWATS from July 2006 to August 2007 in the removal efficiencies of TSS, BOD5, COD, NH4–N, TP and FC. The ABR is very effective in the removal of organic pollutants and could achieve TSS removal up to 91%, BOD5 up to 78% and COD up to 77%. The average removal efficiencies of the DEWATS is 96% TSS, 90% BOD5, 90% COD, 70% NH4–N, 26% TP and 98% FC.  相似文献

The operation of tidal flow was studied using a pilot‐scale system treating high strength piggery wastewater. Located on a farm in Staffordshire, UK, the system consisted of five wetland treatment stages vegetated with common reeds of Phragmites australis. Wastewater samples were collected from the inlet and outlet of each stage and analyzed for BOD5, COD, NH4‐N, NO3‐N, NO2‐N, SS, PO4‐P and pH. Average hydraulic and organic loadings on the system were 0.12 m3/m2 d and 240 g BOD/m2 d, respectively, which is considerably higher than the typical loadings on conventional subsurface flow systems. On average, BOD5 and COD were reduced by 82 % and 80 % from initial concentrations of 2000 mg/L and 2750 mg/L, respectively, across the whole system. The first‐order kinetics constant for BOD5 removal (KBOD in m/d) in this tidal flow system is approximately 2.5 times the rate constant obtainable in a typical horizontal flow system, demonstrating a more efficient removal of organic matter in tidal flow wetlands. The overall efficiency of the system was found to increase with time before stabilizing towards the end of a start‐up period. Straight‐line correlations were established between the loading and removal of BOD5 and COD. Contributions by individual stages to the overall treatment were analyzed. SEM images of wetland media demonstrated the formation of biofilms and microbial activities inside the matrices of the wetland system, which accounted for the degradations of organic pollutants.  相似文献

The performance of an intermittently aerated sequencing batch reactor (IASBR) technology was investigated in achieving partial nitrification, organic matter removal and nitrogen removal from separated digestate liquid after anaerobic digestion of pig manure. The wastewater had chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations of 11,540 ± 860 mg/L, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) concentrations of 2,900 ± 200 mg/L and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations of 4,041 ± 59 mg/L, with low COD:N ratios (2.9) and BOD5:COD ratios (0.25). Synthetic wastewater, simulating the separated digestate liquid with similar COD and nitrogen concentrations but BOD5 of 11,500 ± 100 mg/L, was also treated using the IASBR technology. At a mean organic loading rate of 1.15 kg COD/(m3 d) and a nitrogen loading rate of 0.38 kg N/(m3 d), the COD removal efficiency was 89.8% in the IASBR (IASBR-1) treating digestate liquid and 99% in the IASBR (IASBR-2) treating synthetic wastewater. The IASBR-1 effluent COD was mainly due to inert organic matter and can be further reduced to less than 40 mg/L through coagulation. The partial nitrification efficiency of 71–79% was achieved in the two IASBRs and one cause for the stable long-term partial nitrification was the intermittent aeration strategy. Nitrogen removal efficiencies were 76.5 and 97% in IASBR-1 and IASBR-2, respectively. The high nitrogen removal efficiencies show that the IASBR technology is a promising technology for nitrogen removal from low COD:N ratio wastewaters. The nitrogen balance analysis shows that 59.4 and 74.3% of nitrogen removed was via heterotrophic denitrification in the non-aeration periods in IASBR-1 and IASBR-2, respectively.  相似文献

This paper describes the activity period of an experimental hybrid wetland system placed in a cold climate region. The aim is to determine the efficiency of the system in reducing TSS, BOD5, COD and other pollutants. The constructed wetland consists of a fat-removal unit and a basin for the storage and the distribution of the wastewater which precedes three phytoremediation beds: the first two are parallel and they work as submerged vertical flow wetland with gravel medium for an area of 180 m2; the last is a submerged horizontal flow wetland with sand medium and an area of 360 m2. The CW was designed to process a total estimated BOD5 loading rate of about 24 g m−2 d−1, which was less than half of the average actual loading rate. The wastewater treatment did not meet the required Italian law outflow limits, most likely due to BOD5 overloading.  相似文献

Constructed wetlands are widely recognized as an economical, efficient and environmentally acceptable means to treat many different types of wastewater. Six systems have been constructed in Slovenia for the treatment of landfill leachates. This paper describes the early stages of two treatment systems operating from 1990 to 1993 that were used to treat leachates from municipal landfills. System S1 consisted of a sedimentation lagoon and a 600 m2 reed bed. System S2 was designed with a sedimentation lagoon and two reed beds (total=450 m2). The subsurface flow in both was horizontal and fluctuated widely in S2, but was a constant 0.2 1 s–1 in S1. Peat, soil, sand and gravel were in system S2, while gravel with a hydraulic conductivity of 5×10–4 m s–1, was in S1.The unanticipated fluctuations of hydraulic and organic loadings influenced their performance. The efficiency in reduction of organic matter, N, P, metals and fecal coliforms varied through the year. In 3 years of operation, the average removal efficiencies for COD, BOD5 and TSS were 38%, 61%, and 81%, respectively, in S1, and 53%, 45%, and 47%, respectively, in 1.5 years of operation for S2. The reduction of ammonium did not reach the effluent standard of 10 mg l–1 for either S1 or S2. As, Zn, Pb, and Cu accumulated in roots, and Cu, Fe, As, Ni and Pb accumulated in rhizomes after one year of operation in S2.  相似文献

This paper analyses the purification efficiency and mass removal of organic material, suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus in a hybrid constructed wetland (CW) system treating wastewater from a basic school in Paistu, Estonia. The CW consists of two subsurface flow filter beds using lightweight aggregates (LWA): a two-chamber vertical subsurface flow (VSSF) filter bed followed by a horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) filter bed, with a total area of 432 m2. This CW was constructed in summer 2002 by the Centre for Ecological Engineering in Tartu (CEET). Eighteen series of water samples (from 30.10.2003 to 15.10.2005) were undertaken. The analyses show the outstanding purification effect of the system: for BOD7 the average purification efficiency is 91%; for total suspended solids (TSS)—78%, for total P—89%, for total N—63%, and for NH4N—77%. The average outlet values for the above-listed parameters were 5.5, 7.0, 0.4, 19.2 and 9.1 mg L−1, respectively. According to our results, the purification parameters meet the standards set by the Water Act of Estonia for wastewater treatment plants of 2000–9999 PE: 15, 25, and 1.5 mg L−1 for BOD7, TSS and total P, respectively. The results show that hybrid CW systems consisting of subsurface flow filter beds can work efficiently in conditions of changing hydraulic loading and relatively cold climate. We did not find significant differences between the removal efficiency, mass removal, and values of the first-order rate-constant k for most water quality indicators during the warm (May–October) and cold (November–April) periods. Locally produced LWA as a filter material in CWs has shown good hydraulic conductivity and phosphorus sorption capacity (k = 17.1 ± 12.4 m yr−1). The Paistu CW, with its proper design and outstanding purification results, can be considered one of the best systems in Estonia.  相似文献

The treatment capacity of constructed wetlands is expected to be high in tropical areas because of the warm temperatures and the associated higher rates of microbial activity. A pilot scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland system filled with river sand and planted with Phragmites vallatoria (L.) Veldkamp was set up in the southern part of Vietnam to assess the treatment capacity and the removal rate kinetics under tropical conditions. The system received municipal wastewater at four hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) of 31, 62, 104 and 146 mm day?1. Removals of TSS, BOD5 and COD were efficient at all HLRs with mean removal rates of 86–95%, 65–83% and 57–84%, respectively. Removals of N and P decreased with HLRs and were: NH4-N 0–91%; TN 16–84% and TP 72–99%. First-order area-based removal rate constants (k, m year?1) estimated from sampling along the length of the wetland from inlet to outlet at the four HLRs were in the range of 25–95 (BOD5), 22–30 (COD), 31–115 (TSS), 5–24 (TN and TKN) and 41–84 (TP) at background concentrations (C*) of 5, 10, 0, 1.5 and 0 mg L?1, respectively. The estimated k-values should not be used for design purposes, as site-specific differences and stochastic variability can be high. However, the study shows that domestic wastewater can be treated in horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland systems to meet even the most stringent Vietnamese standards for discharge into surface waters.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Surface water is the main source of water for human life and production. The quality of water affects living conditions and the overall health of people. Ecological protection and restoration engineering technology, combining ecological revetment and an ecological floating bed, is applied to a selected shallow beach experimentation area of a reservoir water source area in Northeast China. According to local conditions, the ecological revetment plants were identified as Goosegrass, sedges, and water grasses, and other local species of Polygonum hydropiper bagen, reeds, and bulrushes were identified as ecological floating bed plants. Regular monitoring of water quality in the experimentation area and a control area showed that the ecological protection and restoration technology can effectively reduce the concentrations of BOD5 (five day biochemical oxygen demand), COD (chemical oxygen demand), TN, NH3-N, NO3?-N, TP, TDP, Mn, Zn, Fe, Pb, total coliforms, and other indicators of surface water in the experimentation area. The BOD5, COD, Max TN, NH3-N, NO3?-N, TP, and TDP reduction rates were 84.76%, 57.14%, 86.76%, 83.78%, 89.26%, 94.02%, and 95.89%, respectively, with the implementation of water pollution prevention and the purifying shoal.  相似文献

Three Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) were fluidically connected in series, with a single feed-line going into the 1st column through the 2nd column and finally as a single outflow coming from the 3rd column. Provision was also made for re-circulation in a loop (the outflow from the 3rd column becoming the feed-line into the 1st column) in order to extend the hydraulic retention time (HRT) on treatment of landfill leachate. The effect of increasing the electrode surface area was also studied whilst the columns were (fluidically) connected in series. An increase in the electrode surface area from 360 to 1080 cm2 increased the power output by 118% for C2, 151% for C3 and 264% for C1. COD and BOD5 removal efficiencies also increased by 137% for C1, 279% for C2 and 182% for C3 and 63% for C1, 161% for C2 and 159% for C3, respectively. The system when configured into a loop was able to remove 79% of COD and 82% of BOD5 after 4 days. These high levels of removal efficiency demonstrate the MFC system’s ability to treat leachate with the added benefit of generating energy.  相似文献

An on-site pilot-scale static granular bed reactor (SGBR) system was evaluated for treating wastewater from a slaughterhouse in Iowa. The study evaluated SGBR reactor suitability for slaughterhose wastewater having high particulate COD concentration (7.9 ± 4.3 g COD/L) at 0.3–1.4 m3/m2/day of the surface loading rates. High organic removal efficiency (over 95% of TSS and VSS removal) was obtained due to the consistent treatability of SGBR system during operation at HRTs of 48, 36, 30, 24, and 20 h. The average effluent TSS, VSS, COD, soluble COD, and BOD5 concentrations were 84, 71, 301,197, and 87 mg/L, respectively. An effective backwash procedure was performed once every 7–14 days to waste a portion of the accumulated solids in the system. This procedure limited the increase in hydraulic head loss and maintained the system stability. COD removal efficiencies greater than 95% were achieved at organic loading rates ranging from 0.77 to 12.76 kg/m3/day.  相似文献

With the rapid development of scaled anaerobic digestion of pig manure, the generation of liquid anaerobic digestate exceeds the farmland loading capacity, causing serious environmental pollution. Three laboratory‐scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CWs; planted + aeration, planted, and unplanted) were set up to investigate the feasibility of liquid digestate treatment in wetlands. Treatment capacity in different wetlands was evaluated under different influent concentrations (chemical oxygen demand [COD], 5 days biochemical oxygen demand [BOD5], and nitrogen forms). The effect of aeration and effluent recirculation on organic matter and total nitrogen removal was investigated. Results showed that integrating intermittent aeration in CWs significantly improved the oxygen condition (p < 0.01) in the wetland bed and promoted BOD5 removal to 90% in aerated CWs as compared with <15% in the unaerated CWs. Meanwhile, COD removal between these three wetlands did not show any difference and varied from 52 to 72% under influent concentration of 200–820 mg/L because of the high content of hard‐degradable organic matter in the liquid digestate. Intermittent aeration resulted in high ammonium removal (>98%) although the influent loading varied from 65 to 350 mg/L. However, intermittent aeration caused nitrate accumulation of 300 mg/L and limited total nitrogen (TN) removal of 33%. To intensify the TN removal, we verified effluent recirculation to increase the removal efficiency of TN to 78%. These results not only show the potential application of CWs for treatment of high‐strength liquid anaerobic digested slurry, but also indicate the significance of intermittent aeration on the enhanced removal of organic matter and ammonium.  相似文献

This research aimed to investigate the technical feasibility of integrated constructed wetland system consisting of a pre-filter unit and a constructed wetland (CW), in series; packed with alum sludge (AS) and oyster shells (OS) as the filter media, respectively, for nitrogen and phosphorus removal from domestic wastewater. Based on the 240 days of operation from January to August 2007, this integrated system was highly effective in removing BOD, N, P and TSS compounds which were found to be 89.5%, 68.8%, 99.4% and 89.9%, respectively. After this period, the integrated system was modified as the CW and post-filter unit, in series. The post-filter of this modified integrated system was operated during 60 days with cover for light shield and during another 60 days with no cover from September to December 2007. The treatment performance of modified integrated system was effective in removing BOD5, N, P and TSS compounds which were found to be 91.4%, 86.8%, 99.7% and 73%, respectively, during which the post-filter had operated with no cover. To simulate high rainfall conditions, the integrated system was tested under hydraulic shock loading at the overall hydraulic retention time of 0.7 day during one day. This hydraulic shock loading conditions made BOD5, TN, TSS concentration increase, but made no effect on P concentration. Integrated system combined a pre-filter and a CW unit or a CW unit followed by a post-filter is recommended for use in domestic wastewater which should result in high treatment performance, especially on P removal.  相似文献

The aim of this project has been to study and compare the ciliate populations present in roptating biological reactors treating three different wastewaters. Wastewaters chosen were a maize mill (nejayote), a sugarcane/ethyl alcohol plant (vinasses) and a recycled paper mill (whitewaters). The initial dissolved organic contents, measured as soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand in five days (BOD5), were 2040±150 mg COD L–1 and 585±5 mg BOD5L–1 for nejayote; 2000±20 mg COD L–1 and 640±5 mg BOD5 L–1 for vinasses and 960±200 mg COD L–1 and 120±10 mg BOD5 L–1 for whitewaters. Results obtained indicate that ciliated protozoa proliferated in the different chambers of each rotating biological reactor (RBR). Saprobity indices, as a quantitative evaluation parameter, indicate that there are no universal species of ciliates associated with specific BOD5 concentrations. Therefore, the number of species of ciliates present in the effluent indicate qualitatively the efficiency of removal of pollution from the wastewaters during treatment in the rotating biological reactors.  相似文献

Four experimental columns were employed in this study to investigate their performance under wastewater treatment conditions. One column was set-up as a biological aerated filter and the remaining three were set-up as microbial fuel cells (MFCs), two of which were connected to an external load whereas the third was left open circuit. The performance of the columns under several flow rates and leachate strengths was studied in terms of BOD5 removal efficiencies and electricity generation, when a fixed resistive load was connected. Results obtained demonstrated that it is possible to generate electricity and simultaneously treat landfill leachate in MFC columns. Energy generation in MFC columns improved with increasing flow rates from 24 to 192 mL/h, while BOD5 removal efficiency levels reached a maximum at 48 mL/h and dropped to relatively low values at higher flow rates. The maximum removal efficiencies were obtained at a loading rate of 0.81 kg BOD5/m3 d for columns C1, C2 and C4 and 1.81 kg BOD5/m3 d for column C3. Electrical output levels and BOD5 concentrations at the MFC columns showed a linear relationship, which allows the system to be used as a BOD5 sensor. Part of the BOD removal was not associated with power generation and was attributed to the presence of alternative end terminal electron acceptors and volatilisation. The MFC columns could reach the same or even higher removal efficiencies than those from the biological aerated filter with the advantage of producing energy and saving cost of aeration. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that compares the MFC technology with other conventional treatment systems for removing pollutants from wastewater.  相似文献

The performance of up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) in combination with down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) system for sewage treatment at an average wastewater temperature of 15 °C has been investigated for 6 months. The results showed that a combined system operated at a total HRT of 10.7 h and total SRT of 88 days represents a cost effective sewage treatment process. The average CODtotal and BOD5 total concentrations measured in the final effluent of the total system (UASB + DHS) amounted to 43 and 3.0 mg/l, respectively, corresponding to the overall removal efficiency of 90% for CODtotal and 98% for BOD5 total. The total process provided a final effluent containing a low concentration of 12 mg/l for TSS.Eighty-six percent of ammonia was eliminated at space loading rate of 1.6 kg COD/m3 d and HRT of 2.7 h. The calculated nitrification rate of the DHS system according to the nitrate and nitrite production amounted to 0.18 kg/m3 d. The removal of F. coliform in the UASB reactor only amounted to 0.86 log10. On the other hand, the F. coliform concentration dropped substantially, i.e. by 2.6 log10 in the DHS system resulting only 2.7 × 103/100 ml in the final effluent. The calculated average sludge production for UASB operated at an HRT of 8.0 h amounted to 30 g TSS/d, corresponding to sludge yield coefficient of 0.2 g TSS/g total COD removed, while it was indeed very low only 6.0 g TSS/d corresponding to sludge yield coefficient of 0.09 g TSS/g total COD removed, for DHS system. The DHS profile results revealed that in the first and second segment of DHS system, the CODtotal, BOD5 total and TSS was eliminated, followed by the oxidation of ammonia in the next segments.  相似文献

The main purpose of this study was to treat organic pollution, ammonia and heavy metals present in landfill leachate by the use of constructed wetland systems and to quantify the effect of feeding mode. The effect of different bedding material (gravel and zeolite surface) was also investigated. A pilot-scale study was conducted on subsurface flow constructed wetland systems operated in vertical and horizontal mode. Two vertical systems differed from each other with their bedding material. The systems were planted with cattail (Typha latifolia) and operated identically at a flow rate of 10 l/day and hydraulic retention times of 11.8 and 12.5 day in vertical 1, vertical 2 and horizontal systems, respectively. Concentration based average removal efficiencies for VF1, VF2 and HF were NH4–N, 62.3%, 48.9% and 38.3%; COD, 27.3%, 30.6% and 35.7%; PO4–P, 52.6%, 51.9% and 46.7%; Fe(III), 21%, 40% and 17%, respectively. Better NH4–N removal performance was observed in the vertical system with zeolite layer than that of the vertical 2 and horizontal system. In contrast, horizontal system was more effective in COD removal.  相似文献
