The recovery of abundant dinosaur fossils from high paleolatitudes of northern Alaska has raised some hard questions in relation to any available model of dinosaur physiology. To explain the occurrence of hadrosaurs at high ancient latitudes, a model involving long-distance migration analogous to that of the modern caribou has been proposed. The model calls for seasonal movements over great latitudinal distances by these Cretaceous hadrosaurs. This model is reassessed in terms of the growth, body sizes, and inferred physiological ecology of the hadrosaurs and the caribou. Histological data suggest that juvenile hadrosaurs obtained from northern Alaska were greater than 1 year in age. Comparison of the relative sizes of juvenile and adult hadrosaurs with juvenile and adult caribou suggests, based on qualitative energetics, that the juvenile hadrosaurs were too small to participate in long-distance migration. The "hadrosaurs as caribou" model provides clues to the feeding ecology of North Slope hadrosaurs, if they are reinterpreted as year-round residents of high latitudes. However, it does not constitute a satisfactory basis on which to infer long-distance seasonal migrations by these animals.  相似文献

Duck-billed dinosaurs (Hadrosauridae) were the most common ornithopods of the Late Cretaceous. Second only to sauropods and in many cases exceeding the sizes of the largest land mammals (such as indricotheres or proboscideans), they are among the largest terrestrial herbivores to have walked the Earth. Despite their gigantic size, diversity and abundance, their growth strategies remain poorly understood. Here, we examine the bone microstructure of several Mongolian hadrosauroids of varied adult sizes. The small and middle-sized species have lines of arrested growth (LAGs). On the other hand, one of the largest duck-billed dinosaurs, Saurolophus angustirostris, shows uninterrupted growth, comparable with other big hadrosaurs for which the lack of cyclical growth arrests was interpreted as a result of living in the polar region. Since both of the studied taxa inhabited warmer, continental, monsoon-influenced environments of the Late Cretaceous Mongolia, we propose that the absence of LAGs is not a climatic-driven condition but rather connected with the animal's size (i.e. ontogeny). Our results show that, like sauropods, hadrosaurs changed their growth dynamics from cyclical to continuous during their evolution, which made it possible for them to achieve comparable body sizes.  相似文献

We examine patterns of occurrence of associated dinosaur specimens (n = 343) from the North American Upper Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation and equivalent beds, by comparing their relative abundance in sandstone and mudstone. Ceratopsians preferentially occur in mudstone, whereas hadrosaurs and the small ornithopod Thescelosaurus show a strong association with sandstone. By contrast, the giant carnivore Tyrannosaurus rex shows no preferred association with either lithology. These lithologies are used as an indicator of environment of deposition, with sandstone generally representing river environments, and finer grained sediments typically representing floodplain environments. Given these patterns of occurrence, we argue that spatial niche partitioning helped reduce competition for resources between the herbivorous dinosaurs. Within coastal lowlands ceratopsians preferred habitats farther away from rivers, whereas hadrosaurs and Thescelosaurus preferred habitats in close proximity to rivers, and T. rex, the ecosystem's sole large carnivore, inhabited both palaeoenvironments. Spatial partitioning of the environment helps explain how several species of large herbivorous dinosaurs coexisted. This study emphasizes that different lithologies can preserve dramatically dissimilar vertebrate assemblages, even when deposited in close proximity and within a narrow window of time. The lithology in which fossils are preserved should be recorded as these data can provide unique insights into the palaeoecology of the animals they preserve.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that a high reproductive output contributes to the unique gigantism in large dinosaur taxa. In order to infer more information on dinosaur reproduction, we established allometries between body mass and different reproductive traits (egg mass, clutch mass, annual clutch mass) for extant phylogenetic brackets (birds, crocodiles and tortoises) of extinct non-avian dinosaurs. Allometries were applied to nine non-avian dinosaur taxa (theropods, hadrosaurs, and sauropodomorphs) for which fossil estimates on relevant traits are currently available. We found that the reproductive traits of most dinosaurs conformed to similar-sized or scaled-up extant reptiles or birds. The reproductive traits of theropods, which are considered more bird-like, were indeed consistent with birds, while the traits of sauropodomorphs conformed better to reptiles. Reproductive traits of hadrosaurs corresponded to both reptiles and birds. Excluding Massospondylus carinatus , all dinosaurs studied had an intermediary egg to body mass relationship to reptiles and birds. In contrast, dinosaur clutch masses fitted with either the masses predicted from allometries of birds (theropods) or to the masses of reptiles (all other taxa). Theropods studied had probably one clutch per year. For sauropodomorphs and hadrosaurs, more than one clutch per year was predicted. Contrary to current hypotheses, large dinosaurs did not have exceptionally high annual egg numbers (AEN). Independent of the extant model, the estimated dinosaur AEN did not exceed 850 eggs (75,000 kg sauropod) for any of the taxa studied. This estimated maximum is probably an overestimation due to unrealistic assumptions. According to most AEN estimations, the dinosaurs studied laid less than 200 eggs per year. Only some AEN estimates obtained for medium to large sized sauropods were higher (200-400 eggs). Our results provide new (testable) hypotheses, especially for reproductive traits that are insufficiently documented or lacking from the fossil record. Plasminogen, the proenzyme of serine protease plasmin, is a plasma glycoprotein synthesized primarily in the liver, and its evolutionary origin in chordates remains unclear. We demonstrated here that the humoral fluid in amphioxus is capable of cross‐reacting with anti‐human or anti‐mouse plasminogen antibodies, and the hepatic diverticulum in amphioxus is the site of plasminogen‐like protein synthesis. The presence of plasminogen‐like protein in amphioxus pushes the origin of plasminogen to before the last common ancestor of vertebrates. In addition, the localization of plasminogen‐like protein in the hepatic diverticulum suggests that the diverticulum in amphioxus is functionally homologous to the vertebrate liver in respect of plasminogen synthesis, supporting the hypothesis that the vertebrate liver evolved from the hepatic diverticulum of an amphioxus‐like ancestor during early chordate evolution.  相似文献

We described the development and subsequent reduction of ventral foregut diverticulum in the early ontogenesis of Anguilliformes in plankton samples collected in the coastal waters of central Vietnam. The diverticulum is a provisional structure derived from the ventral-lateral area of the caudal esophagus. It develops as a protrusion from the esophagus wall and consists of one cell layer. An increase in the volume of the diverticulum results from the proliferation of these cells and transformation of their shape. It was found that the development of the ventral diverticulum in eels is similar to the early stages of lungs formation in other vertebrates. The formation of ventral diverticulum of the esophagus was recorded in all studied embryos. The time and the extent of its development differs between species and can serve as an additional morphological character in the taxonomic identification of eels at early stages of their ontogeny.  相似文献

Alanine aminotransferase (AAT) is mainly synthesized in the liver, and its level in mammalian serum is elevated after acute phase induction. Here we demonstrated that sheep anti-human AAT antibody cross-reacted with amphioxus humoral fluids as well as human serum; and the concentration of AAT in the humoral fluids in amphioxus increased after the acute challenge with lipopolysaccharide, while the level of total proteins remains unchanged. These suggest the presence of the same acute phase response pattern in amphioxus, as observed in some mammalian species. Immunohistochemically, AAT was localized in the hepatic diverticulum, ovary and testis. It appears that the hepatic diverticulum in amphioxus is functionally homologous to the vertebrate liver in respect of AAT synthesis, supporting the hypothesis that the vertebrate liver evolved from the hepatic diverticulum of an amphioxus-like ancestor during early chordate evolution.  相似文献

Australian pergine sawflies typically feed on eucalypts and other closely-related Myrtaceae, which are known for their high content of essential oils. We describe a novel morphological adaptation of the inner mandibular surface of larval stage Pergagrapta species, which feed on leaves of Melaleuca quinquenervia (Myrtaceae). This 'scopa mandibularis' forms an extensive mesh of setaceous papillae on what is usually the grinding surface of the mandible. Behavioural, chemical and morphological investigations of the sawfly- Melaleuca system suggest that the scopa may function in the physical separation of toxic leaf oils from the diet. The oils are stored in a pharyngeal diverticulum from where they are ejected under two circumstances. Oil from the diverticulum is voided prior to feeding and/or during feeding at night, which indicates a mechanism to eliminate host-associated oils. Larvae rest in close aggregations during the day, when they retain a full diverticulum, but the oils may be emitted for defensive purposes when larvae are disturbed. Chemical evidence suggests that 1,8-cineole, the major component in the M. quinquenervia leaves, is selectively metabolized to a more soluble hydroxycineole. We postulate that the separation and regurgitation of oils is not only a defence mechanism against predators, as usually stated, but also a mechanism by which pergid larvae eliminate oils from their diet, to reduce the toxicity of their food plants.  相似文献

This case reports the concomitant and unexpected finding of carcinoid tumour within a Meckel's diverticulum presenting as an acute abdomen due to gangrenous appendicitis in a young adult male. Both Meckel's diverticula and carcinoid tumour are rare clinical entities, and carcinoid tumours occurring within a Meckel's diverticulum are even more uncommon. The initial clinical presentation of carcinoid tumours occurring in a Meckel's diverticulum is usually similar to that of appendicle carcinoids.Carcinoid tumours are the most common primary tumour of the small bowel. They resemble appendicle carcinoids to the extent that they are usually small, single, and asymptomatic. Surgical treatment of Meckel's diverticula is recommended procedure. By presenting this case we wished to stress the value of systematic identification and removal of the diverticulum during laparotomy and to underline the importance of exploration the Meckel's diverticulum particularly in case of young adult subjects.  相似文献

Hundreds of megaloolithid eggshells have been found at the Costa de la Coma site (Tremp Fm, South-Central Pyrenees, Spain), the microstructural features (spherulitic eggshell units, thickness, ornamentation and pore system) of which agree with the Megaloolithus oogenus diagnosis. Comparisons with other megaloolithids from the Tremp Basin, southern France and South America, however, showed that these eggshells share many features with the South American oospecies Megaloolithus patagonicus. A cladistic analysis of the qualitative eggshell features of the main dinosaur taxa was performed. The results grouped the Costa de la Coma eggshells with Megaloolithus patagonicus, forming a clade separated from other megaloolithids, and revealed a polytomy of megaloolithids (associated with sauropods) and spheroolithids (associated with hadrosaurs). The finding of Megaloolithus cf. patagonicus in the Tremp Fm agrees with skeletal evidence provided by four indeterminate titanosaur forms from the Formation's late Cretaceous deposits. Other Megaloolithus oospecies of the Tremp Fm may belong to hadrosaurs, the skeletal remains of which are also abundant in the Tremp Basin.  相似文献

Antithrombin (AT), which is mainly synthesized in the liver, is an acute-phase plasma protein in mammalian species. These suggest the presence of the same acute-phase response pattern in amphioxus, as observed in some mammalian species. Immunohistochemically, AT was localized in the hepatic diverticulum. It is clear that the hepatic diverticulum in amphioxus is homologous to the vertebrate liver with respect to AT synthesis. This lends support to the hypothesis originally suggested by Müller that the vertebrate liver evolved from the hepatic diverticulum of an amphioxus-like ancestor during early chordate evolution. A bursa tract diverticulum is widespread in the female part of the hermaphroditic reproductive system of stylommatophoran pulmonates. However, the ultrastructure of the diverticulum is unknown and there is only anecdotal evidence for a spermatophore-dissolving function for this organ. In the present study, we examined the ultrastructure of the diverticulum and investigated histological, histochemical, and morphometric changes at different time intervals after mating in the simultaneously hermaphroditic land snail Arianta arbustorum. The diverticulum in this species of snail is a prominent organ, consisting of a luminal columnar epithelium surrounded by a thick layer of connective tissue. During mating, the diverticulum functions as the site of spermatophore uptake. Within the lumen of the diverticulum the spermatophore wall is dissolved or at least partly broken down. The digested material is taken up by epithelial cells and accumulated in molluscan-specific cells of the connective tissue, the so-called rhogocytes. Subsequent to copulation, the total diameter of the diverticulum increases markedly, reaching a maximum size 12 h after mating, while at the same time the thicknesses of the diverticulum wall and diverticulum epithelium decrease. The length of the diverticulum shows a positive allometry and a high phenotypic variation compared to snail size, which suggests that the diverticulum is under directional sexual selection. We propose that the diverticulum in A. arbustorum has evolved in response to selection pressures imposed by divergent evolutionary interests between male and female function.  相似文献

A juvenile loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) stranded in Gran Canaria, Spain was necropsied. The turtle was underweight, had sunken eyes, and small amounts of crude oil were in the oral cavity. The most significant lesion was a large esophageal diverticulum at the junction of the esophagus and stomach. The diverticulum was full of gas and green mucoid fluid and a diffuse thick yellow fibrinonecrotic membrane covered the mucosa. The lumen of the diverticulum also contained moderate numbers of cephalopods, crustaceans, and anthropogenic debris including crude oil balls, plastics, and fishing lines. Histologically there was a severe diffuse fibrinonecrotic esophagitis. Aerococcus viridans was isolated from the diverticulum. This is the first report of an esophageal diverticulum in a sea turtle. Although A. viridans is a known pathogen of lobsters and fishes, there are no reports of A. viridans infection in sea turtles.  相似文献

The haplogyne spider D. erythrina possesses two distinctly different sperm storage organs: a bilobed anterior spermatheca and a large, sac-like posterior diverticulum. The glandular equipment of both storage types is markedly different: the glandular tissue of the spermatheca is composed of complicated glandular units comprising a cuticular ductule and three canal cells (class 3 cells) whereas the glandular tissue of the posterior diverticulum is composed of simple gland cells that discharge their product through the cuticle (class 1 cells). Thus, the glandular products produced differ, leading to different storage conditions for the spermatozoa from copulation to egg laying. It is suggested that multiple organ types have evolved to facilitate specialization in short-term and long-term storage and to allow (posterior diverticulum) or prevent (spermatheca) males from accessing previously stored sperm.  相似文献

Female Harpactea lepida possess a single genital opening leading into a diverticulum. This diverticulum shows no secretory layer. It continues posteriorly into a receptaculum which is associated with gland cells. In the two already described dysderids, Dysdera crocata and D. erythrina, the bilobed spermatheca lies anteriorly to the diverticulum. Gland cells are associated with the spermatheca and the diverticulum. In H. lepida, the sclerotized genital structures lie dorsally to the diverticulum and consist of a posterior and an anterior part. The posterior part shows a lamella extending laterally to sclerites functioning as muscle attachments. The anterior part has two roundish structures. A hollow stalk-like sclerite functioning as muscle attachment extends towards anterior. The posterior and the anterior part of the sclerotized genital structures fit together. A narrow uterine valve connecting the uterus externus with the diverticulum forms between them. It may be opened by muscles as also suggested for D. erythrina. In H. lepida, spermatozoa embedded in secretion are found in the diverticulum and the receptaculum. There is no evidence that they are stored under different conditions like in D. erythrina. Additional spermatozoa are found in the uterus externus of H. lepida which could be an indication for internal fertilization. Spermatogenesis occurs in cysts in the testes of male H. lepida. In the vasa deferentia, the ductus ejaculatorius and the palpal bulb, the spermatozoa are embedded in homogenous secretion. The palpal bulb has a distal extension bearing a crown-like structure. Abstract. The localization of vitellogenin (Vg) remains untested in amphioxus. Western blotting analysis showed that mouse anti-amphioxus Vg sera cross-reacted with the crude extracts of the hepatic diverticulum and ovary, and humoral fluids, including blood and coelomic fluid, from specimens of Branchiostoma belcheri . Similarly, immunohistochemical staining also revealed that Vg is localized in the hepatic diverticulum, sub-intestinal vessels, and ovary in amphioxus. The hepatic diverticulum of amphioxus, like the vertebrate liver, synthesizes Vg, suggesting that amphioxus hepatic diverticulum is functionally equivalent to the vertebrate liver in respect of the synthesis of this compound. This agrees with the idea that amphioxus hepatic diverticulum is the precursor of vertebrate liver.  相似文献

Two species of marine mites belonging to the families Hyadesiidae and Halacaridae, Hyadesia sp. and Copidognathus sp., respectively, were found associated with the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis from Baja California in NW México. The first species was found inside the mussel gut with an intensity ranging from one to six mites per mussel and their prevalence was from 20.0 to 46.7%; this species was also found living free in the sediment at a density of 0.7 mite/100 ml. The second species was found on the mantle and gills of the host with an intensity ranging from one to three mites per host and their prevalence was from 3.3 to 6.7%; this species was abundant (4.5 mites/100 ml) and living free in the sediment around mussel clumps. Hyadesia sp. was found alive and attached in the gut of the mussel. A histological analysis revealed this species in the lumen of intestine surrounded by mucus and attached to the epithelial cells of the intestine, where some disorder of epithelial cells was associated. Moreover, this mite may be encapsulated by hemocytes inside the digestive diverticulum, the reproductive follicle, or the connective tissue surrounding the diverticulum. No damages to branches or gills resulting from the presence of Copidognathus sp. were observed. The results suggest that these mites are occasional invaders of mussels; however, as a result of this infestation, Hyadesia sp. may produce damage in the host's tissues. This is the first record of marine mites inside the gut, reproductive follicles, branches, and mantle of a marine bivalve.  相似文献

Multiple anomalies, including a vertebral cleft in the cervicothoracic region containing the posterior pharyngeal diverticulum, and duplication of the lower lumbar spine with absence of sacrum and coccyx, are described in a stillborn anencephalic female monster. It is postulated that vertebral division at two levels is evidence of two neurenteric canals, a caudal normal canal and a cranial accessory one. This supports the 'accessory neurenteric canal' theory for vertebral divisions in the cervicothoracic regions. Other associated defects, such as exomphalos, ectopia vesicae and craniorhachischisis, are correlated with the presence of a single umbilical artery.  相似文献
