Energy metabolism was studied by measurements of the activity and isozyme pattern of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in rats with kaolin-induced hydrocephalus at 1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks after the induction, as well as in normal, control rats. The total LDH activity in hydrocephalic rats was 1.5 times that in controls throughout the examination period. The main LDH isozyme in hydrocephalic rats was LDH 5(M4) at 2 weeks, but the isozyme pattern was the same as in controls at 4 and 6 weeks. These results suggest that the ratio of anaerobic to aerobic glycolysis increases in the acute stage of hydrocephalus and gradually lowers to become similar to that in controls with time.  相似文献

Genome-wide linkage analysis of inherited hydrocephalus in the H-Tx rat   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Inherited hydrocephalus in humans has received very little attention, most probably because known occurrences are sporadic and systematic investigation is difficult. The H-Tx rat, one of a number of rodent strains with inherited hydrocephalus, has a complex inheritance with more than one postulated susceptibility gene and 40% penetrance. The aim of this study was to perform a genome-wide scan on backcross progeny derived from H-Tx and Fisher F344 rats, to identify genomic regions associated with hydrocephalus. Penetrance of hydrocephalus in (H-Tx × F344) F1× H-Tx was 12.3%. All severely hydrocephalic progeny (n = 185) and a subset of normal progeny (n = 128) were screened with 110 simple sequence length polymorphisms (SSLPs) with 83% coverage of the genome. A significant susceptibility locus was found on chromosome (Chr) 11 (LOD = 3.1). Three loci with suggestive linkage were found on Chr 17 (LOD = 2.4), on Chr 9 (LOD = 1.94), and on Chr 19 (LOD = 1.91). For the loci on Chr 11 and 19, hydrocephalus was associated with the heterozygous genotype, while the other two were recessive. Although none of the four loci was essential for the hydrocephalic phenotype, the additive effects of two, three, or four loci increased the penetrance in a linear fashion. Altogether these four loci accounted for 13.5% of the total variance. It is concluded that hydrocephalus in the H-Tx rat is associated with two, possibly four genetic loci, but that there may be additional undefined genetic and environmental influences. Summary Family, twin, and adoption studies have shown that genetic factors are involved in the etiology of alcoholism. Based on earlier EEG findings in alcoholics and on the known genetic determination of the alcohol effect on the EEG, the hypothesis was tested whether the resting EEG reflects a certain disposition to alcoholism. Resting EEGs were examined for 115 alcoholics (78 males, 37 females) and matched controls. In addition, the first-degree relatives of two extreme groups of alcoholics—those with poor and those with particularly good alpha waves—were examined and compared with matched controls. The EEGs were analyzed with an EEG processor. Whereas male alcoholics did not differ from their controls, female patients showed a shift from the alpha and theta to the beta bands of the brain wave pattern. The relatives of the two extreme groups of alcoholics, who did not misuse alcohol, exhibited the same tendency. This is an argument supporting the notion that in females a poorly synchronized EEG pattern reflects a certain disposition to alcoholism. This finding is discussed in light of drinking motivation in males and females. The latter more often belong to the alpha-and gamma-types of alcoholism than do males. Because of comparable findings in schizophrenics it is argued that a genetically determined desynchronized resting EEG pattern is not specific for a certain illness, but reflects basic mechanisms that enhance the risk for different psychiatric disorders.This study was supported by the Bundesminister für Jugend, Familie und Gesundheit, Bonn (Gesch.-Z.343-4919-0/15)  相似文献

Two experiments, each with 24 normal right-handed adults, examined variability of the response of EEG alpha rhythms during repeated visual stimulations that were contingent on the occurrence of those rhythms. Within-trial variability of alpha durations and no-alpha (alpha blocking) durations were recorded from bipolar derivations along two bilateral posterior-anterior lines. Variability was significantly lower for: (1) the contingent EEG connected to the stimulus compared to the contralateral EEG, which was recorded simultaneously but was not connected to the stimulus; (2) occipitoparietal EEGs compared to parietocentral EEGs; (3) alpha durations compared to no-alpha durations. Differences in variability among the four EEG locations on the left or the right side were significant for contingent EEGs but not for contralateral nonconnected EEGs. The results were interpreted to be a demonstration that feedback EEG method can be applied to research on the functional topography of an EEG response to sensory stimuli in terms of the reduction of variability of the response that can be achieved with feedback.  相似文献

This paper presents results from a finite element study of the biomechanics of hydrocephalus, with special emphasis on a reassessment of the parenchyma elastic modulus. A two-dimensional finite element model of the human brain/ventricular system is developed and analysed under hydrocephalic loading conditions. It is shown that the Young's modulus of the brain parenchyma used in previous studies (3000-10000 Pa) corresponds to strain rates much higher than those present in hydrocephalic brains. Consideration of the brain's viscoelasticity leads to the derivation of a considerably lower modulus value of approximately 584 Pa.  相似文献

Sleep is regulated by independent yet interacting circadian and homeostatic processes. The present study used a novel approach to study sleep homeostasis in the absence of circadian influences by exposing Siberian hamsters to a simple phase delay of the photocycle to make them arrhythmic. Because these hamsters lacked any circadian organization, their sleep homeostasis could be studied in the absence of circadian interactions. Control animals retained circadian rhythmicity after the phase shift and re-entrained to the phase-shifted photocycle. These animals displayed robust daily sleep-wake rhythms with consolidated sleep during the light phase beginning about 1 h after light onset. This marked sleep-wake pattern was circadian in that it persisted in constant darkness. The distribution of sleep in the arrhythmic hamsters over 24 h was similar to that in the light phase of rhythmic animals. Therefore, daily sleep amounts were higher in arrhythmic animals compared with rhythmic ones. During 2- and 6-h sleep deprivations (SD), it was more difficult to keep arrhythmic hamsters awake than it was for rhythmic hamsters. Because the arrhythmic animals obtained more non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) during the SD, they showed a diminished compensatory response in NREMS EEG slow-wave activity during recovery sleep. When amounts of sleep during the SD were taken into account, there were no differences in sleep homeostasis between experimental and control hamsters. Thus loss of circadian control did not alter the homeostatic response to SD. This supports the view that circadian and homeostatic influences on sleep regulation are independent processes.  相似文献

The present investigation was designed to clarify the role of the subcommissural organ (SCO) in the pathogenesis of hydrocephalus occurring in the HTx rat. The brains of non-affected and hydrocephalic HTx rats from embryonic day 15 (E15) to postnatal day 10 (PN10) were processed for electron microscopy, lectin binding and immunocytochemistry by using a series of antibodies. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples of non-affected and hydrocephalic HTx rats were collected at PN1, PN7 and PN30 and analysed by one- and two-dimensional electrophoresis, immunoblotting and nanoLC-ESI-MS/MS. A distinct malformation of the SCO is present as early as E15. Since stenosis of the Sylvius aqueduct (SA) occurs at E18 and dilation of the lateral ventricles starts at E19, the malformation of the SCO clearly precedes the onset of hydrocephalus. In the affected rats, the cephalic and caudal thirds of the SCO showed high secretory activity with all methods used, whereas the middle third showed no signs of secretion. At E18, the middle non-secretory third of the SCO progressively fused with the ventral wall of SA, resulting in marked aqueduct stenosis and severe hydrocephalus. The abnormal development of the SCO resulted in the permanent absence of Reissner’s fibre (RF) and led to changes in the protein composition of the CSF. Since the SCO is the source of a large mass of sialilated glycoproteins that form the RF and of those that remain CSF-soluble, we hypothesize that the absence of this large mass of negatively charged molecules from the SA domain results in SA stenosis and impairs the bulk flow of CSF through the aqueduct.  相似文献

Familial and twin studies have shown that the individual variability of the normal human electroencephalogram (EEG) is largely genetically determined. In epileptology, these genetic parameters of the EEG background activity are almost totally neglected. The aim of the present study has been to investigate whether a special genetic type of background activity might be related to the pathogenesis of epilepsy. EEG recordings of parents of 257 epileptic children were evaluated retrospectively. Some 156 healthy adults served as controls. Special attention was paid to alpha activity extending to the frontal region, both in bipolar and in referential recordings (Alpha I). Alpha I was found significantly more often in parents of children with primary generalized epilepsy (18%) compared with parents of children with focal epilepsy (8%) or controls (9%). In a second step, parental EEGs of children with different EEG patterns associated with epilepsy were studied. Alpha I was found significantly more often in parents of children with focal sharp waves and generalized spikes and waves (26%) than in parents of probands with focal sharp waves without additional generalized spikes and waves (8%) or in controls (9%). Parents of probands with theta rhythms and spikes and waves had alpha I significantly more often (18%) than parents of probands with theta rhythms without additional spikes and waves (8%) or controls (9%). The findings reveal a clear correlation between the type of EEG background activity in parents and the EEG characteristics in their children, thus pointing to common mechanisms.  相似文献

Summary The purpose of the investigation is to clarify the genetic contribution to the interindividual variability of ethanol action on the central nervous system. The 52 adult male healthy twin pairs (26 MZ, 26 DZ) got 1.2 ml/kg ethanol p.o. under standardized conditions; furthermore, 13 non-twin subjects were repeatedly subjected to the same procedure in order to test the intraindividual variability. The EEG was recorded before and 60, 120, 180, and 240 min after alcohol intake. The EEGs were off-line analyzed by means of a computer program for time domain analysis. As was already known, on the average alcohol led to a better synchronisation of the EEG, i.e., the number of beta-waves decreased whereas the number of alpha- and theta-waves increased. The extent of the alcohol effect on the EEG varied enormously between individuals; however, the EEGs of MZ twins proved to react indentically to alcohol loading, whereas the EEGs of DZ twins became more dissimilar during the course of the experiment. The low-voltage EEG presumably is resistant to alcohol; furthermore, it is supposed that there exists a special beta-prone EEG-type which is also genetic in origin. The identical EEG reaction of MZ twins to alcohol loading could not be attributed to more similar blood alcohol concentrations. It is hypothesized that the differences in the extent of the alcohol effect on the EEG between individuals might reflect differences in the sensitivity of the ascending reticular activating system. In the literature it has frequently been reported that alcoholics have preferentially brain wave patterns which are poorly synchronized. These findings are discussed in the light of the present results.  相似文献

Golden hamsters of one common laboratory strain had a high incidence of hydrocephalus internus. When a severity score of hydrocephalus was used, a major autosomal recessive locus could be identified. However, when a binary score (hydrocephalus, no hydrocephalus) was used, no such major locus could be detected and results of test matings were not consistent with Mendelian inheritance. Golden hamsters with severe forms of hydrocephalus had a dorsally compressed and ventrally intact hippocampus. Implications for the behavior and well-being of affected hamsters are unknown but researchers using this strain should be aware of the likely presence of hydrocephalus.  相似文献

In a 10-year follow-up study electroencephalograms (EEGs) of 31 hyperactive and 27 matched control subjects of mean ages 19.17 and 18.59 years respectively showed no significant differences in any of the features assessed. Sequential EEGs, available for only the hyperactive subjects, suggested that a much greater proportion were normal at the 10-year follow-up assessment than at the 5-year follow-up assessment and that the normalization tended to take place mainly in the second 5-year period. This supports the hypothesis that EEG abnormalities of hyperactive persons are those of an immature pattern that tends to normalize with age. Correlation between EEG findings at the 10-year follow-up assessment and global outcome measures was not significant. Initial and 5-year EEGs also failed to predict global outcome at the 10-year follow-up assessment.  相似文献

The amplitude-frequency and spatiotemporal characteristics of the EEGs of subjects performing various cognitive-mnemenic activities under the conditions of graduated hypoxia were studied. The quickness and correctness of test performance were significantly decreased beginning from the sixth minute of hypoxia as compared to normoxic conditions. The amplitude and mean period of the dominant EEG activity in this functional state were higher than in the same tests performed under normoxic conditions and lower than in the case of hypoxia not accompanied by the performance of tests. The spatiotemporal characteristics of the EEG under hypoxic conditions displayed both the characteristics typical of hypoxia (a decrease in EEG cross-correlation within anterior cortical regions) and those typical of cognitive-mnemenic activity (an increase in the correlation between the EEGs of distant zones of anterior and posterior cortical regions). It is assumed that the “intermediate” EEG pattern observed in subjects performing cognitive-mnemenic tests under hypoxic conditions reflects opposite effects of hypoxia and intellectual effort on the functional activity of brain neurons.  相似文献

This work deals with elimination artifacts from electroencephalograms (EEGs). Though many methods for solving the problem have been proposed, they either require direct intervention of the researcher, are based on additional measurements (electrooculogram, electrocardiogram, etc.), or cannot remove artifact activity to a sufficient extent. We proposed an automated method that uses of the fact that the electromyogram (EMG) is not correlated and the artifacts of electrode movement at adjacent derivations and is based on the representation of electrical activity in one derivation through activity in other derivations. The analysis of the proposed method using model signals and examples of real EEG recordings has demonstrated its practical effectiveness.  相似文献

Adult ICR/Slc or BALB/c mice developed hydrocephalus when attenuated herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) (strain Ska) was injected intracerebrally 2 to 4 weeks earlier and then after mice were challenged with the same virus or virulent HSV-1. Initial inoculation of the Ska strain elicited acute meningitis and ependymitis with transient mild hydrocephalus. Viral antigen was seen in the meninges and subependymal areas, and the virus was titrated during the acute phase of infection. After the second virus inoculation, more prominent inflammation was evoked in the same area, and the animals developed hydrocephalus, although viral antigen and infectious virus were hardly detected. When the mice were immunosuppressed with cyclophosphamide, they ceased to develop hydrocephalus. BALB/c nude mice did not show the same pathology, even though they were treated in the same way. When irradiated mice, which had been infected with the Ska strain intracerebrally 2 weeks earlier, received syngeneic immune spleen cells, they developed hydrocephalus. The T-cell nature of the effector cells was confirmed by the elimination of the pathology after treatment of the donor cells with anti-Thy-1.2 plus complement. No hydrocephalic mice were observed after treatment of the donor cells with anti-Lyt-1.2 plus complement, which gave further evidence of the T-cell nature of the effector cells as the Lyt-1+.2+ antigen-bearing subsets. Intervals between priming and challenge virus inoculation could be more than 18 months. The presence of purified HSV-1 envelope protein was feasible for the development of the hydrocephalic animals.  相似文献

Summary Visual unit activity, EEG changes and sustained potential shifts (SPS) were recorded from the toad tectum whilst the animal was presented with a visual stimulus. Telencephalic EEGs were also recorded.On the surface of the tectum, retinal unit activity preceded a sustained negative shift in potential and an increase in the amplitude and dominant frequency of the EEG. In deeper layers of the tectum, T5 units with configurational selectivity for wormlike stimuli were found. The activity of these units followed a pronounced SPS and EEG change.Visual unit activity was most pronounced during the negative-going phase of the synchronised EEG, when there was also a small decrease in amplitude of neuronal spikes. Similarities between the latencies and durations of EEGs and SPSs, and their response decrements, on repeated stimulus presentation, implies a close relationship between them not shared by the visual units studied. Sleep problems are commonly reported in Rett syndrome (RTT); however the electroencephalographic (EEG) biomarkers underlying sleep dysfunction are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to analyze the temporal evolution of quantitative EEG (qEEG) biomarkers in overnight EEGs recorded from girls (2–9 yrs. old) diagnosed with RTT using a non-traditional automated protocol. In this study, EEG spectral analysis identified high delta power cycles representing slow wave sleep (SWS) in 8–9h overnight sleep EEGs from the frontal, central and occipital leads (AP axis), comparing age-matched girls with and without RTT. Automated algorithms quantitated the area under the curve (AUC) within identified SWS cycles for each spectral frequency wave form. Both age-matched RTT and control EEGs showed similar increasing trends for recorded delta wave power in the EEG leads along the antero-posterior (AP). RTT EEGs had significantly fewer numbers of SWS sleep cycles; therefore, the overall time spent in SWS was also significantly lower in RTT. In contrast, the AUC for delta power within each SWS cycle was significantly heightened in RTT and remained heightened over consecutive cycles unlike control EEGs that showed an overnight decrement of delta power in consecutive cycles. Gamma wave power associated with these SWS cycles was similar to controls. However, the negative correlation of gamma power with age (r = -.59; p<0.01) detected in controls (2–5 yrs. vs. 6–9 yrs.) was lost in RTT. Poor % SWS (i.e., time spent in SWS overnight) in RTT was also driven by the younger age-group. Incidence of seizures in RTT was associated with significantly lower number of SWS cycles. Therefore, qEEG biomarkers of SWS in RTT evolved temporally and correlated significantly with clinical severity.  相似文献

The Stroop effect is considered as a standard attentional measure to study conflict resolution in humans. The response of the brain to conflict is supposed to change over time and it is impaired in certain pathological conditions. Neuropsychological Stroop test measures have been complemented with electroencephalography (EEG) techniques to evaluate the mechanisms in the brain that underlie conflict resolution from the age of 20 to 70. To study the changes in EEG activity during life, we recruited a large sample of healthy subjects of different ages that included 90 healthy individuals, divided by age into decade intervals, which performed the Stroop test while recording a 14 channel EEG. The results highlighted an interaction between age and stimulus that was focused on the prefrontal (Alpha and Theta band) and Occipital (Alpha band) areas. We concluded that behavioural Stroop interference is directly influenced by opposing Alpha and Theta activity and evolves across the decades of life.  相似文献

The 16-channel EEG records of 45 adolescents with schizophrenia and 39 healthy adolescents were subjected to statistical combinatorial analysis of 160 elementary EEG characteristics (6 spectral and 4 segmental EEG characteristics for a channel). Employing pattern recognition algorithm "Kora-n", a list of 37 combined EEG patterns was compiled. This list characterized with a minimal error the EEG of healthy adolescents in such a way that none of these characters featured the EEG of adolescents with schizophrenia. Analysis of this list of EEG characteristics suggests that the contrast between EEG of healthy and ill adolescents is the sharpest in the F4, Cz, T3 and O1 derivations. Compared to EEG samples of schizophrenic subjects, EEGs of healthy subjects exhibit lower levels of delta and theta activity mainly in the frontal and temporal regions of the cortex and higher level of alpha activity predominantly in the occipital region. Applicability of the list of EEG patterns for diagnostics of schizophrenia-type disorders of adolescents is discussed.  相似文献

目的:了解脑型血吸虫病脑电图(EEG)的脑电活动状况,为临床诊断与治疗提供参考。方法:收集1997~2004年临床诊断为脑型血吸虫病的40例EEG资料,主要分析异常EEG的脑电活动状况与异常程度、临床分型及预后的关系。结果:31例出现不同程度的EEG异常改变,异常率为77.5%,其中癫痫性为70%;脑瘤型为100%。绝大部分EEG检查是患者经治疗后作的。治疗前后均作了EEG检查的仅9例。治疗前,9例均有不同程度异常,治疗后7例有不同程度改善,2例恢复正常。结论:EEG对脑型血吸虫病的诊断及预后的评价有参考价值。  相似文献

Spatial temporal and local EEG characteristics were studied in healthy subjects during inhalation of hypoxic oxygen-nitrogen gas mixture with 8 % content of oxygen. Analysis of spectra power density, coherence, phase shift, similarity of dominant frequencies in the EEGs of different derivations was performed separately for the EEG epochs with and without visually detected patterns of spatial synchrony of the EEG. Apart from this, a fact of dominance of the frequency in the EEG spectra of corresponding derivation was taken into account when estimating spectral parameters. Results of the study showed that, in general, under hypoxia, the EEG coherence in alpha- and delta-frequency range decreases as compared to the background level, in beta-range growth of this parameter is observed, in theta-range ambiguous changes occur: in the epochs with patterns of spatial synchrony--growth, in other epochs--lowering. Under hypoxia, also occurs growth of frontal and temporal EEGs' phase shift (corresponding to EEGs other derivations) in delta- and theta-range. In beta-range, on the contrary, average level of the phase shift decreases. It was revealed that taking into account the fact of dominance of frequency in the local EEG spectra is necessary for correct interpretation of the EEG spatial and temporal parameter analysis' results. A mathematical model of interaction between processes with different frequency characteristics is suggested, which explains some facts obtained in the study.  相似文献
