Reconsidering the Placebo Response from a Broad Anthropological Perspective   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
This paper considers how the full range of human experience may catalyze a placebo response. The placebo effect has been characterized as something to control in clinical research, something to cultivate in clinical practice and something present in all healing encounters. We examine domains in which the term ‘placebo’ is used in discourse: clinical research, clinical practice, media representations of treatment efficacy and lay interpretations of placebo—an underresearched topic. We briefly review major theoretical frameworks proposed to explain the placebo effect: classical conditioning, expectancy, the therapeutic relationship and sociocultural ‘meaning.’ As a corrective to what we see as an overemphasis on conscious cognitive approaches to understanding placebo, we reorient the discussion to argue that direct embodied experience may take precedence over meaning-making in the healing encounter. As an example, we examine the neurobiology of rehearsing or visualizing wellness as a mode of directly (performatively) producing an outcome often dismissed as a ‘placebo response.’ Given body/mind/emotional resonance, we suggest that the placebo response is an evolutionarily adaptive trait and part of healing mechanisms operating across many levels—from genetic and cellular to social and cultural.

Apoptosis of human breast carcinoma cells (SKBR-3, MCF-7, and MDA-468) has been observed after treatment of these cells with anti-cancer drug cis-platin and glycosphingolipid biosynthesis inhibitor L- and D-PPMP, respectively. These drugs initiated apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner as measured by phenotypic morphological changes, by binding of a fluorescent phophatidyl serine-specific dye (PSS-380) onto the outer leaflet of the cell membranes, and by activation of caspases, −3, −8, and −9. It was observed that in two hours very little apoptotic process had started but predominant biochemical changes occurred after 6 h. DNA degradation started after 24 hours of drug treatment. However, very little is known about the stability of the ‘`Replication Complexes’’ during the apoptotic process. DNA helicases are motor proteins that catalyze the melting of genomic DNA during its replication, repair, and recombination processes. Previously, DNA helicase-III was characterized as a component of the replication complexes isolated from embryonic chicken brains as well as breast and colon carcinoma cells. Helicase activities were measured by a novel method (ROME assay), and DNA polymerase-α activities were determined by regular chain extension of the nicked ACT-DNA, by determining values obtained from +/− aphidicolin-treated incubation mixtures. In all three breast carcinoma cell lines, a common trend was observed: a decrease of activities of DNA polymerase-α and Helicase III. A sharp decrease of activities of the glycolipid sialyltransferases: SAT-2 (CMP-NeuAc; GD3 α2-8 sialyltransferase) and SAT-4 (CMP-NeuAc: GM1a α2-3 sialyltransferase) was observed in the apoptotic carcinoma cells treated with L-PPMP compared with cis-platin.  相似文献

Earliness is a crucial factor of tomato field production in Poland. A. Michalska and B. Kubicki (1978) conducted the first investigations on tomato earliness at the Department of Plant Genetics and Breeding. The main conclusions from these studies indicated that it was possible to obtain varieties earlier than ‘New Yorker’ as a result of transgression. The two new varieties (‘Alfa’ and ‘Akord F1’) proved to be two weeks earlier than ‘New Yorker’. However, earliness was correlated with smaller fruit weight (30–40 g). At the next stage of experiment some improvement was achieved both in the size of fruit (45 g for ‘Beta’ up to 70 g for ‘Alka’) as well as colour intensity and good flavour. With the next few years fruit weight was still increased (up to 100 g for ‘Maskarena’) and a higher level of firmness was obtained (mid firm fruits for ‘Maskarena’ and ‘Delta’). At present, the Polish Research Centre for Cultivar Testing recommends our varieties ‘Betalux’, ‘Promyk’ and ‘Delta’ as standards.  相似文献

Summary Salt-soluble polypeptide and a few isozymes were profiled to identify banana cultivars available in Andamans, India. Salt-soluble polypeptide profile was found to be inappropriate in cultivar identification However, isozymes such as peroxidase could differentiate ‘Jungli kela’, ‘Tissue Cultured Dwarf Cavendish’ (TCDC), ‘Lal kela’, ‘Rajbel’, and ‘Baratang wild’, while esterase identified all the cultivars except ‘Rajbel’ and ‘Tarkari kela’. The latter two cultivars could be identified with the use of malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and peroxidase profiles, MDH portrayed cultivar-specific distinct banding pattern in ‘Khatta Champa’, ‘Tarkari kela’, and ‘Baratang wild’, ‘China kela’ could be identified easily by superoxide dismutase (SOD). Amongst four isozymes, esterase was found to be most efficient in identifying eight cultivars amongst 10; bence this isozyme may be used often as a marker for cultivar identification of banana.  相似文献

Changes in ascorbic acid content and antioxidant enzyme activities were investigated in non-heading Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris ssp. chinensis Makino) leaves of ‘Wutacai’ and ‘Erqing’ exposed to excess copper (Cu). Cu treatment reduced the fresh weight of shoot and root by 57% and 46% in ‘Wutacai’, and 60 and 54% in ‘Erqing’, respectively. The accumulation of copper in leaves was higher in ‘Wutacai’ than that in ‘Erqing’. Compared to the control, ascorbic acid (AsA) contents were significantly decreased after copper treatment in both cultivars, while they were higher in ‘Wutacai’ than in ‘Erqing’, which may explain the higher copper-tolerance of ‘Wutacai’ with higher copper accumulation. The higher AsA contents of ‘Wutacai’ resulted from their lower activities of degrading enzymes, such as ascorbate oxydase (AAO) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), as well as the increasing activity of dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) after copper treatment compared with ‘Erqing’. Copper stimulated superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in both cultivars, but for catalase (CAT), there was little difference between both cultivars. Peroxidases (POD) activity was decreased after copper treatment in ‘Erqing’, while in ‘Wutacai’, it was significantly increased at 14 days, and POD activity was higher in ‘Wutacai’ than that in ‘Erqing’ at 21 and 28 days. Therefore, the induced increasing activity of POD in ‘Wutacai’ also played an important role in its copper tolerance.  相似文献

Four bred grapevine varieties released for commercial cultivation in Ukraine, namely ‘Antey Magarachskii’, ‘Rubinovyi Magaracha’, ‘Granatovyi Magaracha’ and ‘Rubin Golodrigi’, and their putative parental forms were genotyped using six microsatellite loci. Genotypes were compared with breeding records to verify genetic relationships among varieties. Results of the analysis confirmed four of six parent-offspring relationships. Results of the analysis allow to assume that genotype ‘Seyve Villard 20347’ is the direct parent of ‘Antey Magarachskii’ instead of its grandparent. The first-studied accession believed to be that of ‘Granatovyi Magaracha’ was identified as impurity. In order to verify the parentage of ‘Granatovyi Magaracha’, rest accessions of that variety and its putative parent ‘Antey Magarachskii’ were additionally genotyped at 13 nuclear loci and at three chloroplast loci. The parent-offspring relationship was confirmed, as all ‘Granatovyi Magaracha’ accessions had a common allele with the parent variety ‘Antey Magarachskii’ at each locus and the same chlorotype A. Different ‘Granatovyi Magaracha’ accessions could have been obtained via vegetative propagation of two seedlings which arose from one crossing.  相似文献

We investigated the weaving of the kato alu, a traditional Tongan basket. Unlike most ordinary baskets which are woven from coconut or pandanus leaves, kato alu are woven from tuaniu (Cocos nucifera, Palmae, midrib of leaf) and alu [Epipremnum pinnatum, Araceae, aerial roots]. Anciently the common people wove and decorated the kato alu and gave them to chiefs, nobles and kings as gifts at wedding and funeral ceremonies. Today, however, the weaving techniques are known to only a few people. It appears that these techniques will likely disappear from Tonga within a generation.

This study analyzed genetic differences of 19 cultivars selected from somaclonal variants of Syngonium podophyllum Schott along with their parents as well as seven additional Syngonium species and six other aroids using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers generated by 12 primer sets. Among the 19 somaclonal cultivars, ‘Pink Allusion’ was selected from ‘White Butterfly’. Tissue culture of ‘Pink Allusion’ through organogenesis resulted in the development of 13 additional cultivars. Self-pollination of ‘Pink Allusion’ obtained a cultivar, ‘Regina Red Allusion’, and tissue culture propagation of ‘Regina Red Allusion’ led to the release of five other cultivars. The 12 primer sets generated a total of 1,583 scorable fragments from all accessions, of which 1,284 were polymorphic (81.9%). The percentages of polymorphic fragments within ‘White Butterfly’ and ‘Regina Red Allusion’ groups, however, were only 1.2% and 0.4%, respectively. Jaccard's similarity coefficients among somaclonal cultivars derived from ‘White Butterfly’ and ‘Regina Red Allusion’, on average, were 0.98 and 0.99, respectively. Seven out of the 15 cultivars from the ‘White Butterfly’ group and three out of six from the ‘Regina Red Allusion’ group were clearly distinguished by AFLP analysis as unique fragments were associated with respective cultivars. The unsuccessful attempt to distinguish the remaining eight cultivars from the ‘White Butterfly’ group and three from the ‘Regina Red Allusion’ group was not attributed to experimental errors or the number of primer sets used; rather it is hypothesized to be caused by DNA methylation and/or some rare mutations. This study also calls for increased genetic diversity of cultivated Syngonium as they are largely derived from somaclonal variants.  相似文献

The influence of the developmental stage of microspores on establishing isolated microspore cultures of three Hungarian (‘Szegedi 80’, ‘Szegedi 178’, and ‘Remény’) and three Spanish (‘Jeromin’, ‘Jariza’, and ‘Jaranda’) pepper genotypes was investigated. Donor anthers containing 80% uninucleated and 20% binucleated microspores yielded the highest frequency of successful microspore cultures. Co-cultures with wheat, line ‘CY-45’, ovaries exhibited enhanced frequency of embryoid production than those with pepper ovaries. Differences in efficiency of isolated pepper microspore culture establishment were observed among different pepper genotypes. Green plantlets were regenerated from microspore-derived embryoids, but some were exhibited abnormal growth habits, such as leaf rosetting. A total of seven fertile microspore-derived plants were obtained, including three ‘Jariza’, three ‘Jaranda’, and a single ‘Szegedi 80’ plant.  相似文献

‘Hass’ is the most popular avocado (Persea americana Mill.) cultivar in the world. It has been characterized as a crop requiring cross-pollination. However, the potential extent of self-pollination and the most effective pollen donors (best cross-pollinizing cultivars) have not been determined. In this study, 56 markers were screened against ‘Hass’ and nine commonly used pollinizing cultivars grown in southern California: ‘Bacon,’ ‘Ettinger,’ ‘Fuerte,’ ‘Harvest,’ ‘Lamb Hass,’ ‘Marvel,’ ‘Nobel,’ ‘Sir Prize,’ and ‘Zutano.’ Seventeen microsatellite, i.e., simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers, were found to be very promising for paternity analysis. Four highly informative SSR markers were selected to accurately and unequivocally identify pollen parents of ‘Hass’ fruit from an orchard interplanted with these pollinizing cultivars. From 2003 to 2006, 7,984 ‘Hass’ fruit were analyzed for their paternity. Overall, the pollen parents of 99.55% of the analyzed fruit could be unequivocally identified with a single multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Only 36 fruits (<0.45%) required a second PCR reaction to reach unequivocal identification of the pollen parents.  相似文献

At least three sources of resistance to the watermelon strain of Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV-W) have been identified in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) including: ’TMG-1’, an inbred line derived from the Taiwanese cultivar, ’Taichung Mou Gua’; ’Dina-1’, an inbred line derived from the Dutch hybrid ’Dina’; and the South American cultivar ’Surinam’. In this investigation we sought to determine the inheritance of resistance to PRSV-W in ’Dina-1’, the allelic relationships among the three sources of PRSV-W resistance, and the relationship between PRSV-W resistance and known resistances to other cucurbit potyviruses. Like ’Surinam’ and ’TMG-1’, resistance in ’Dina-1’ is controlled by a single gene. Despite differences in dominance vs recessive performance and patterns of virus accumulation, all three sources of resistance complemented each other. ’TMG-1’ and ’Dina-1’ also possess co-segregating, single-gene resistances to Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), Watermelon mosaic virus and Moroccan watermelon mosaic virus. Sequential inoculations and F3 family analysis indicated that resistance to PRSV-W completely co- segregated with resistance to ZYMV in ’TMG-1’. Although PRSV-W resistances are at the same locus in both ’TMG-1’ and ’Surinam’, ’Surinam’ is only resistant to PRSV-W, and progeny of ’TMG-1’×’Surinam’ were resistant to PRSV-W but susceptible to ZYMV. Susceptibility to ZYMV and resistance to PRSV-W in ’Surinam’ was not influenced by co-inoculation or sequential in- oculations of the two viruses. Collectively, the co- segregation of resistances to PRSV-W, ZYMV, WMV and MWMV in ’TMG-1’ (within 1 cM), allelism of PRSV-W resistances in ’TMG-1’ and ’Surinam’, and resistance to only PRSV-W in ’Surinam’, suggest that multiple potyvirus resistance in cucumber may be due to different alleles of a single potyvirus resistance gene with differing viral specificities, or that the multiple resistances are conferred by a tightly linked cluster of resistance genes, of which ’Surinam’ only possesses one member. The effects of an amino acid mixture and of plant growth regulators added to the FHG barley anther culture medium were examined using three barley cultivars (Cadette, Léger, and Igri) grown in two environments (growth cabinet and glasshouse). ‘Léger’ and ‘Igri’ were known as responsive, and ‘Cadette’ as recalcitrant to androgenesis. Our first experiment showed that the amino acid-supplemented medium was best for embryogenesis and regeneration of ‘Cadette’ and ‘Igri’ in both environments, and if ‘Léger’ in the growth cabinet. The addition of ABA and TDZ did not improve embryogenesis and plant regeneration, and PAA decreased them in the growth cabinet. The addition of the amino acid mixture in the FHG medium also reduced the percentage of albino plants in the growth cabinet, but growth regulators did not improve the percentage of albino plants, and in some cases increased it. In the growth cabinet, disregarding media, ‘Léger’ produced more embryos than ‘Cadette’ and ‘Igri’, and Léger' and ‘Igri’ produced more green plants than ‘Cadette‘. Percentages of albino plants were higher or ‘Cadette’ than for ‘Igri’ or ‘Léger’. In a second experiment, we compared seven hybrids with their parents for androgenic responsiveness. Hybrids had a higher ability to generate green plants than expected based upon the weighted average reflecting the contribution of each parent. The objective of this paper is the structural and narrative reconstruction of representations of ‘nature’, ‘wildlife’ and ‘landscape’, held by rural residents of the Dadia Forest Reserve. Data collection involved in-depth interviews. Employing a social representations’ approach, we recovered representational elements that are expected in the case of rural belief systems, such as negative dispositions towards wolves and foxes, as well as elements of an urban adherence, such as nature’s independence. Representational elements refer to visual aspects of the countryside, which seem compatible with the figurative nucleus of the rural idyll. Concerning ‘wildlife’, residents focused on vultures, which comprise the main tourist attraction of the reserve. Scientific knowledge adds to the complexity of the narrative schema, which corresponds to the representation of ‘wildlife’. Interviewees perceived the rural landscape as an interface between the natural and the human-conditioned environment. Our study shows that interviewees make no reference to environmental conservation or quality of life issues, as it could be expected according to relatively wide definitions of the term ‘environmentalism’. Environmental messages reinforced by ecotourism development seem to be recalled primarily in terms of their compatibility with the perceived economic benefit of local people. Despite ecotourism development, representational elements that diverge from a tourist version of ‘nature’, ‘wildlife’ and ‘landscape’ were not pronounced within rural belief-systems. Further interventions within the study area are needed, in order to address a variety of topics under the environmental conservation discourse and raise the environmental awareness of rural residents.  相似文献

Low temperature at the booting stage of rice causes male sterility resulting in severe yield loss. Cold tolerance has long been an important objective in rice breeding. We identified a quantitative trait locus (QTL) for cold tolerance on the long arm of chromosome 3 from the cold-tolerant breeding line ‘Ukei 840’ by using F2 and BC1F2 populations from crosses between ‘Ukei 840’ and ‘Hitomebore’. The cold tolerance of ‘Ukei 840’ is derived from the Chinese cultivar ‘Lijiangxintuanheigu’. The effect of this QTL on cold tolerance was confirmed by developing ‘Hitomebore’ chromosome segment substitution lines having ‘Lijiangxintuanheigu’ alleles on chromosome 3. By producing recombinants in chromosome 3, the QTL region for cold tolerance was delimited to the region of about 1.2-Mb region between RM3719 and RM7000. All lines heterozygous for the QTL showed seed fertilities as low as that of ‘Hitomebore’, suggesting that the ‘Lijiangxintuanheigu’ allele for cold tolerance in the QTL region is recessive. Determination of a 1.2-Mb nucleotide sequence of ‘Ukei 840’ and comparison with the published genomic sequence of ‘Nipponbare’ showed 254 SNPs, of which 11 were in coding regions of genes, seven in five genes being non-synonymous. SNPs were detected in the 5-kb upstream regions of 89 genes, but no differences of gene expression levels were detected between alleles of these genes. Although further delimitation is required to identify the gene responsible for cold tolerance of ‘Lijiangxintuanheigu’, SNP markers developed here will be useful for marker-assisted selection in a breeding program using ‘Lijiangxintuanheigu’ as a donor of cold tolerance.  相似文献

Robin Nunn has argued that we should stop using the terms ‘placebo’ and ‘placebo effect’. I argue in support of Nunn’s position by considering the logic of why we perform placebo comparisons. Like all comparisons, placebo comparison is just a case of comparing one thing with another, but it is a mistake, I argue, to think of placebo comparison as a case where something is compared to ‘a placebo’. Rather, placebo comparison should be understood as a situation which sets-up the treatment and control groups in a particular way; not as a case involving objects or procedures called ‘placebos’ employed in order to control for ‘placebo effects’.  相似文献

In 1893, Charles Barnes (1858–1910) proposed that the biological process for ‘synthesis of complex carbon compounds out of carbonic acid, in the presence of chlorophyll, under the influence of light’ should be designated as either ‘photosyntax’ or ‘photosynthesis.’ He preferred the word ‘photosyntax,’ but ‘photosynthesis’ came into common usage as the term of choice. Later discovery of anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria and photophosphorylation necessitated redefinition of the term. This essay examines the history of changes in the meaning of photosynthesis. The nucellus was removed from immature seeds of 4 mango genotypes, andcultured under different induction conditions. The mango genotypes includedpolyembryonic ‘Hindi’ and ‘Nam Doc Mai’ and monoembryonic ‘Lippens’ and’Tommy Atkins‘. Nucellar explants were cultured on modified B5 basal mediumunder the following inductive conditions: 1) 4.52 μM 2,4-D; 2) nogrowth regulator (control); 3) 4.52 μM 2,4-D + embryogenic ‘Parris‘nurse culture; 4) no growth regulator + embryogenic ‘Parris’ nurse culture.Induction of embryogenic competence was mediated by 4 factors: genotype,explanting, 2,4-D and the presence of a highly embryogenic nurse culture,although there was considerable difference in genotype response. ‘Hindi’ hadthe greatest embryogenic potential, followed by ‘Lippens’, ‘Tommy Atkins‘and ‘Nam Doc Mai’, respectively. Induction of embryogenic cultures of allgenotypes at low frequency occurred as a result of explanting excisednucellus onto control medium. The most effective treatment for inducingembryogenic cultures was 2,4-D + embryogenic ‘Parris’ nurse culture with’Hindi’, ‘Lippens’ and ‘Nam doc Mai’, with the exception of ‘Tommy Atkins’,in which the treatment with 2,4-D alone was most effective. Seed bitterness, due to cyanogenic glucosides, has been reported in apricot as a recessive trait, being determined by a single gene. In this study, 21 F1 and 10 F2 populations from parents with either bitter or non-bitter (‘sweet’) phenotype were tested by seed tasting. Both the ‘bitter’ and the ‘sweet’ phenotypes were represented in populations from ‘bitter × bitter’ and ‘sweet × sweet’ crosses, as well as from self-pollination of either bitter- or sweet-seeded trees, providing evidence that more than one gene is involved in this trait. Ten populations showed segregation ratios inconsistent with a monofactorial inheritance of seed taste with the ‘sweet’ trait dominant over the ‘bitter’. On the other hand, data from spectrophotometric assays indicate that seed cyanoglucoside content cannot be regarded as a quantitative trait. All the observed segregation ratios can be explained by an inheritance mechanism based on five, non-linked genes, involved in two distinct biochemical pathways. Three genes would control different steps in an ‘additive’ pathway (either the biosynthesis of cyanoglucosides, or their transport, or both) leading to accumulation of these metabolites in seeds: homozygosis of recessive alleles of at least one of them would result in the sweet phenotype. Two more genes would provide a cleaving activity, participating to cyanoglucoside catabolism; heterozygosis or homozygosis of dominant alleles at these loci would produce the ‘sweet’ phenotype, while homozygosis for recessive alleles of at least one of them would interrupt the catabolic pathway, leading to the ‘bitter’ trait, if associated with the anabolic function.  相似文献
