Higher eukaryotes have developed a mechanism of sequence-specific RNA degradation which is known as RNA silencing. In plants and some animals, similar to the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, RNA silencing is a non-cell-autonomous event. Hence, silencing initiation in one or a few cells leads progressively to the sequence-specific suppression of homologous sequences in neighbouring cells in an RNA-mediated fashion. Spreading of silencing in plants occurs through plasmodesmata and results from a cell-to-cell movement of a short-range silencing signal, most probably 21-nt siRNAs (short interfering RNAs) that are produced by one of the plant Dicer enzymes. In addition, silencing spreads systemically through the phloem system of the plants, which also translocates metabolites from source to sink tissues. Unlike the short-range silencing signal, there is little known about the mediators of systemic silencing. Recent studies have revealed various and sometimes surprising genetic elements of the short-range silencing spread pathway, elucidating several aspects of the processes involved. In this review we attempt to clarify commonalities and differences between the individual silencing pathways of RNA silencing spread in plants. 相似文献

This study undertook an exploratory data analysis of the binding parameters of HIV-1 integrase inhibitors. The study group involved inhibitors in preclinical development from the diketo acid, pyrroloquinoline and naphthyridine carboxamide families and the most advanced inhibitors Raltegravir and Elvitegravir. Distinct differences were observed in the energetics of binding between the studied classes of inhibitors that also correlated with drug resistant patterns. Quantitative-property–activity-relationships correlated experimental IC50 values to the binding energy and the logarithm of the partition coefficient between n-octanol and water (clog P). The approach followed here serves as an improved basis for the development of ‘second generation’ integrase inhibitors. 相似文献

The objective of this paper is the structural and narrative reconstruction of representations of ‘nature’, ‘wildlife’ and
‘landscape’, held by rural residents of the Dadia Forest Reserve. Data collection involved in-depth interviews. Employing
a social representations’ approach, we recovered representational elements that are expected in the case of rural belief systems,
such as negative dispositions towards wolves and foxes, as well as elements of an urban adherence, such as nature’s independence.
Representational elements refer to visual aspects of the countryside, which seem compatible with the figurative nucleus of
the rural idyll. Concerning ‘wildlife’, residents focused on vultures, which comprise the main tourist attraction of the reserve.
Scientific knowledge adds to the complexity of the narrative schema, which corresponds to the representation of ‘wildlife’.
Interviewees perceived the rural landscape as an interface between the natural and the human-conditioned environment. Our
study shows that interviewees make no reference to environmental conservation or quality of life issues, as it could be expected
according to relatively wide definitions of the term ‘environmentalism’. Environmental messages reinforced by ecotourism development
seem to be recalled primarily in terms of their compatibility with the perceived economic benefit of local people. Despite
ecotourism development, representational elements that diverge from a tourist version of ‘nature’, ‘wildlife’ and ‘landscape’
were not pronounced within rural belief-systems. Further interventions within the study area are needed, in order to address
a variety of topics under the environmental conservation discourse and raise the environmental awareness of rural residents. 相似文献

Differences in abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation between two olive cultivars were studied by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay
in roots and leaves, leaf water potential (Ψl), stomatal conductance (g
s) as well as photosynthetic rate (A) were also determined in well-watered (WW) and water-stressed (WS) plants of two olive
cultivars ‘Chemlali’ and ‘Chetoui’. ‘Chemlali’ was able to maintain higher leaf CO2 assimilation rate and leaf stomatal conductance throughout the drought cycle when compared with ‘Chetoui’. Furthermore, leaf
water potential of ‘Chemlali’ decreased in lower extent than in Chetoui in response to water deficit. Interestingly, significant
differences in water-stress-induced ABA accumulation were observed between the two olive cultivars and reflect the degree
of stress experienced. Chemlali, a drought tolerant cultivar, accumulated lower levels of ABA in their leaves to regulate
stomatal control in response to water stress compared to the drought sensitive olive cultivar ‘Chetoui’ which accumulated
