Cheese wood, Alstonia boonei De Wild stem bark was extracted with five different solvents namely: methanol, ethanol, acetone, petroleum ether and n-hexane. The extracts were tested for insecticidal activity on cowpea bruchid, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fab.). Adult mortality and adult emergence of the insects were investigated. Oviposition deterrences using dual-choice and multiple-choice tests were also investigated as well as percentage damage and weight loss at temperature of 28?±?2?°C and 75?±?5% relative humidity. Results showed that at the rate of 2% extract per 20?g of cowpea seeds, methanol, petroleum ether and n-hexane extracts caused 100% mortality of adult cowpea bruchid after four?days of post treatment. When the bruchid had choice of oviposition substrate, they laid significantly (p?<?0.05) fewer eggs on cowpea seeds treated with extracts compared to untreated seeds. There was no adult emergence in seeds treated with methanol, ethanol, petroleum ether and n-hexane extracts and 100% reduction in F1 progeny was recorded compared with untreated that had 81.86% adults emergence and 0% reduction in F1 progeny. The results obtained from this study revealed that methanol, ethanol, acetone, petroleum ether and n-hexane extracts of A. boonei stem bark were effective in controlling C. maculatus and could serve as an alternative to synthetic insecticides for the protection of stored cowpeas against bruchids.  相似文献

The powder and ethanol extract of Tithonia diversifolia leaves were tested for their efficacy at five different concentrations (0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%) on bruchid mortality, oviposition and adult emergence of cowpea seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus at ambient tropical storage conditions of temperature and relative humidity. Results showed that the leaf extract had a higher bioactivity on oviposition, adult emergence and mortality of C. maculatus. The mean number of eggs laid on seeds treated with extract was reduced from 20.7 in the solvent-treated to 4.7 at 2%Tithonia extract concentration while adult emergence reduced from a mean of 92.2 in the solvent-treated seeds to 72.2 at 2.0% extract treatment. Mortality was 100% at higher concentrations of 3%, 4% and 5% within 24 h of extract application but at lower concentrations mortality was 73.3% and 93.3% at 1% and 2%, respectively after 24 h. Fourty-eight hours after application, 100% mortality of adult C. maculatus was obtained at all concentrations. The mean number of eggs laid was reduced from 41.3 in the untreated to 17.3 at 2.0% powder concentration while adult emergence dropped from 98.5% in the control to 74.2% at the highest powder concentration. The powder was effective at higher concentrations and longer exposure time. At 3%, 4% and 5%, 63–75% mortalities occurred within 24 h of application while at 48 h, mortality was 76–98% at 3–5% powder application rates. The results of this study revealed T. diversifolia as a potential candidate for bioinsecticide preparations because of antiovipositional, ovicidal and knockdown properties of its products, which have some volatile components.  相似文献

In this study, the insecticidal effect of Poppy (Papaver somniferum) seed oil was investigated against Callosobruchus maculatus (Bruchidae) in cowpea, at different concentrations and exposure time. The Poppy seed oil at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10?ml/kg was tested against adults of C. maculatus, and the mortality was counted after 24, 48 and 72?h of exposure. All tests were conducted at 27–30?°C and 65?±?5% r.h. The experiments were carried out based on the factorial experiment by randomized complete design with four replications. Twenty-five insects with 0–24?h old were used for each replication. The effect of Poppy seed oil on the reduction of emergence of insects in next generation (F1) was also assayed. The results of experiments indicate the significant differences between concentrations and exposure time (p?<?0.0001), and the increase of concentrations and exposure time increased mortality. The amount of mortality at high concentrations was remarkable, and highest mortality rate (96.91%) was recorded at 10?ml/kg, after 72?h of exposure. The application of oil significantly reduced F1 progeny production and even at lowest concentration (2?ml/kg), the amount of F1 production was reduced more than 70%, compared with control treatment. Complete (100%) reduction in progeny production was recorded at the rates of 8 and 10?ml/kg. The results of seed germination assay showed no significant differences between control and treated seed, and no harmful effect was observed on the seed germination. These results proved that Poppy seed oil can be used as a controlling agent of storage pests, especially C. maculatus, although more detailed studies are necessary.  相似文献

The bark of the Fagara heitzii tree in the west‐central African Republic of Congo (Congo–Brazzaville) is known anecdotally to provide protection for human residents against fleas and to be of use as a narcotic in fishing (similar to rotenone). We found that powder and hexane extracts from the bark of the Fagara heitzii tree contain insecticidal compounds. Dried powder (14.5 mg) on the bottom of a Petri dish is the residue at 14.494 mg per dish (LD50) for 20 adult maize weevils Sitophilus zeamays after four days. The LD50 of the same material to 20 adult cowpea weevils Callosobruchus maculatus was slightly higher at 16.144 mg/dish (after 48 h). These weevils cause significant economic damage to cowpea and maize in Congo–Brazzaville. Hexane extracts of the bark of Fagara heitzii were also toxic to these weevils. Symptoms of toxicity suggested the extracts were slow‐acting nerve poisons or respiratory inhibitors or both. The time needed to develop full toxicity suggested a respiratory poison. The hexane extract was also toxic to the American cockroach Periplaneta americana. The symptoms in the cockroach were similar, but cockroaches also exhibited apparent escape attempts suggesting they could detect the compounds. Signs of apparent irritation or exaggerated locomotion in all three insects also suggested irritation or nerve effects.  相似文献

Abstract

The efficacy of aqueous extracts of cashew, Anacardium occidentale L. products was tested on Legume flower bud thrips on field cowpea in the 1999 and 2000 seasons using nutseed and nutshell at 10% w/v, bark and leaf at 20% w/v. Aqueous extract of cashew nutshell was superior to other cashew products in reducing thrip populations in cowpea flowers and compared favourably with cypermethrin + dimethoate. Pod density per plant was significantly enhanced on cowpea plants sprayed with aqueous extract of cashew nutshell compared to other extracts. Cashew extract contains cardole (a caustic substance) and anacardic acid, which may have been responsible for its insecticidal effect on thrips. This result indicates the potential of cashew products especially the nutshell for integrated management of thrips in legume crops.  相似文献

The sympatric bruchids Callosobruchus rhodesianus (Pic) and Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) colonize cultures of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (Walp.) (Papilionaceae), in Togo at the end of the rainy season. Seeds containing larvae of the two bruchid species were introduced into the storage systems. Callosobruchus rhodesianus adults emerged from the seeds at the beginning of storage, but this species disappeared quickly and C. maculatus became dominant. Analysis of the reproduction of females collected at the beginning of storage made it possible to distinguish between four groups of females differing in their reproductive activity. Three groups were sexually active but they differed in their fecundity and the duration of the latency period before the first oviposition phase. The fourth group of females was in reproductive diapause. In interspecific competition, the presence of C. maculatus larvae reduced the survival chances of C. rhodesianus and therefore is disadvantageous for this species. The main factors explaining the rapid decrease of the C. rhodesianus populations under storage conditions were the variability of female reproductive activity with the emergence of insects in reproductive diapause and the significant larval mortality in interspecific competition with C. maculatus.  相似文献

The pesticide efficacy of locally available seven botanicals “Gime” (Chenopodium ambrosioides), “Ayderke” (Jatropha curcas), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Melia (Melia azadirach), “Chobe” (Cisus rotonifolia), “Kelewa” (Maesa lanceolata) and “Antharfa” at a rate of 4% weight by weight was evaluated for the control of cowpea bruchid using 200?g cowpea seeds in 500?cm3 volume jar in 2010 and 2011 under laboratory condition at Sirinka Agricultural Research Centre. The combined analysis showed that “Gime” (both leaf and seed) had high speed of pesticide effect as it showed significantly higher per cent of parent adult mortality (84 and 71%, respectively) as to the standard check Malathion 5% dust (100%) in the first day of adult mortality count. “Antharfa” and “Ayderke” also have shown significantly higher per cent of parent adult mortality as to Malathion in the third and fifth day of adult mortality count, respectively. In the seventh day, all botanicals showed significantly higher per cent of adult mortality as compared to untreated check. “Gime” leaf and seed powder, “Ayderke” seed, Neem seed and “Antharfa” leaf powders significantly reduced the number of progeny emergence per day as compared to all other treatments. Moreover, these botanicals were effective in reducing per cent seed damage (0.00, 0.00, 0.57, 5.86 and 10.86%, respectively) and storage loss (0.00, 0.00, 0.073, 1.02 and 2.27%, respectively). Gime (both leaf and seed powder), “Ayderke” seed and Neem seed are locally available, simple for preparation and environmentally friendly. Therefore, these three botanicals can be recommended to satisfy the demand for organic food and save the seed damage and yield loss of cowpea caused by Callosobruchus maculates and bean bruchid (Zabrotes subfasciatus) which has similar biology with Callosobruchus maculatus.  相似文献

A study was conducted to examine the protectability of nine Nigerian medicinal plants against Callosobruchus maculatus at an ambient temperature of 28?±?2?°C and relative humidity of 70?±?5%. The nine plants used were dried and milled into fine powder before application. Among the nine plant powders used, Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides effected highest mortality rate of 73.40 and 100% at 5% (wt/wt) concentration within two and three days of application, respectively. The effect of this plant at this level of concentration was significantly (p?<?0.05) different from other plants. However, all the plant powders effected high mortality rate as they all achieved more than 50% beetle mortality within four days of application at 20% (wt/wt) concentration. Only the powder of Z. zanthoxyloides at 10% (wt/wt) concentration was able to achieve 0% adult emergence, 0% seed damage and 100% damage reduction. Moreover, powder of Z. zanthoxyloides, Aristolochia ringens and Colocasia esculenta at 20% (wt/wt) was also able to prevent the emergence of adult C. maculatus, prevent seed damage and achieve 100% damage reduction. All the powders had low weevil perforation index when compared to the control which had above 50% weevil perforation index. At all levels of concentration, the effect of the powders was significantly (p?<?0.05) different from the control. However, Z. xanthoxyloides appeared to be the most effective; therefore, the effective utilisation of Z. xanthoxyloides as a botanical pesticide could minimise the use of hazardous chemicals in stored product pest control since it is of a botanical source.  相似文献

Thirty cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walpers, cultivars were evaluated as intact pods to determine if any possessed resistance to the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabr.). Pod resistance was measured as pre-establishment larval mortality (PreM); those larvae dying after egg hatch but before penetrating into the seeds, and as post-establishment within-seed mortality (PostM); those larvae dying after penetrating into the seeds. Among the 30 varieties examined, PreM ranged from 57.9% to 99.4% and PostM ranged from 6.7% to 82.6%. Ten varieties exhibited total intact pod mortality (mortality from egg hatch to adult emergence from the seed) greater than 95%.Physical measurements were made of several pod and seed characteristics to ascertain whether the observed pod resistance was due to seed factors, pod-wall factors, or to interactions between the pod and seeds. Although resistance to breakage (from handling plus pod dehiscence) is a necessary characteristic for overall pod protection against C. maculatus; other factors are also important. Among the other pod and seed characteristics measured to identify major resistance factors, seed coat thickness was the one most highly correlated with pod resistance. Our results suggest that interactions between pod-wall and seed coat characteristics play a large role in pod resistance of cowpeas to C. maculatus.  相似文献

Fumigant activity of essential oil vapours distilled from Zingiber officinale (L.) and Mentha pulegium (L.) was tested against eggs, larvae and adults of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.). Fumigant toxicity was assessed at 27?±?1?°C and 60?±?5% RH, in dark condition. The influence of different concentrations of the essential oil vapours on egg hatchability, larval and adult mortality was significant. Data probit analysis showed that lethal concentration of the essential oil to kill 50% of the population (LC50) for egg, larvae and adult was found to be 1.151, 2.336 and 2.183?μl/l air of Z. officinale, followed by 0.072, 0.113 and 0.093?μl/l air essential oil of M. pulegium, respectively. Between these essential oils, Z. officinale is almost more toxic than M. pulegium on all growth stages of C. maculatus. The present study suggests that essential oils from these medicinal plants may be potential grain protectants as botanical alternative fumigants and could be used in the management of various life stages of C. maculatus.  相似文献

Six different solvents namely: methanol, ethanol, water, acetone, pet-ether or n-hexane was used to extract the essential oils from cashew kernel. The extracted oils were evaluated on Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky 1855) for mortality, oviposition and adult emergence effects. The long-term storage and water absorption capacity of the treated maize grains was also investigated. Results showed that the steam distillate was most lethal on S. zeamais. The least potent extracts on S. zeamais were those extracted with methanol and ethanol. The extracts drastically reduced oviposition in S. zeamais. Maize grains treated with steam distillate extract had the lowest water absorption capacity, while the highest water absorption capacity was obtained in grains treated with ethanol and methanol. Extracts of steam distillate, n-hexane, petroleum ether and acetone completely prevented infestation and subsequence damage of the treated maize grains for a period of three months. In the grains treated with the methanol and ethanol extracts, damage of 28.61% and 6.24%, respectively were obtained. The results obtained reveal that extracts of cashew kernel are effective in controlling S. zeamais and could serve as an alternative to synthetic insecticides.  相似文献

The oviposition deterrent effect of water extract of Spodoptera littoralis and Agrotis ipsilon larval frass on Phthorimaea operculella adult females was studied using two types of larval food “Natural host and Semi-artificial diet” under laboratory and storage simulation (semi-field) conditions. Extracted frass of fed larvae on semi-artificial diet showed complete oviposition deterrent effect at treatments with 4th, 5th and 6th instars of S. littoralis, also at treatments with 1st–3rd and 6th instars of A. ipsilon, while the same effect was observed when the larvae fed on castor oil leaves as a natural host only at treatment with frass extract of A. ipsilon 6th instar larvae. Presence of low amounts of phenols and flavonoids in water extract of A. ipsilon larval frass resulted in relatively more effect as oviposition deterrent to fertile adult females on treated oviposition sites, while the opposite effect was obtained in S. littoralis larval frass experiments. At semi-field experiments, the percentage reduction of laid eggs reached 100% after two?days at treatments with frass extracts of 4th and 5th S. littoralis larval instars and A. ipsilon 6th instar larvae fed on semi-artificial diet and/or castor oil leaves. Percentage reduction of laid eggs for untreated sacks reached 93.24 and 48.95% after 2 and 30?days, respectively, when placed between treated sacks, in comparison with the mean number of laid eggs for isolated control.  相似文献

We examined the effect of age differences on competition type in individuals of a scramble‐type strain of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.). When oviposition of two individuals on a bean was manipulated to introduce time intervals using two lines with different adult body colors, the frequency of two‐adult emergence decreased with the introduction of sequential oviposition. This result indicates that an age difference between two individuals induces contest competition. The frequency of adult emergence in older individuals decreased, whereas in younger individuals it increased with the introduction of sequential oviposition. Using a dissecting microscope, we observed that bodies of older individuals that died in the bean during the 4‐day oviposition interval were crushed at the pupal stage under the pupal chambers of younger individuals. These results show that an age difference between two larvae in a bean causes contest competition due to one‐sided interference by a younger individual during pupation of an older individual. Based on these experimental results, we discuss the ecological cause of contest competition and the population‐level consequences of identified interactions in scramble‐type C. maculatus.  相似文献

Eighty cowpea accessions comprising both improved and local were assessed for their resistance to Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) attack under laboratory conditions (29 ± 3?°C and 65 ± 5% R.H.). Sixty-nine accessions were derived from the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture breeding programmes, four were local cultivars, while seven were improved cultivars from national research institutes. Results showed that there were significant differences among the accessions in terms of number of initial bruchid eggs laid on them, adult emergence, number of seeds damaged and bruchid-induced seed weight loss at three months after artificial infestation with C. maculatus. On IT04K-334-2, IT04K-343-1, IT06K-141, IT99K-216-48-1, IT99K-494-6 and IT99K-529-2, fewer initial eggs were laid and no adult emergence, seed damage or weight loss and were considered highly resistant to C. maculatus. On the other hand, IT03K-337, IT04K-217-51, IT04K-332-1, IT04K-339-1, IT06K-188-49, IT81D-1137, IT845-2231-15, IT93K-452-1, IT04K-154-1, IT96K-610, IT97K-1069-6, IT97K-390-2, Ife Bpc, IT99K-573-2-1, Ife Modupe, IT845-2246, Drum, Ife Brown and Oloyin were the most susceptible with the highest damage indices values (p?<?0.05). The range of each of the resistance indices measured in the susceptible varieties was: number of initial eggs laid (61–100), adult emergence (40.0–62.10%), number of seeds damaged (53.0–85.5) and seed weight loss (58.0–66.25%).  相似文献

The perilla seed bugs, Nysius plebeius Distant and Nysius hidakai Nakatani, are emerging pests of perilla crop in Korea. Here, we investigated the life-history variables of N. plebeius and N. hidakai on five commonly grown crop seeds: perilla [Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt.], sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.)], proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) and foxtail millet (Setaria italic L.). Bug oviposition, total developmental period, adult emergence, adult longevity and adult weight of both Nysius species were determined in both choice and no-choice tests. The oviposition and development periods of N. plebeius and N. hidakai varied significantly among seed species. The most preferred seed species for oviposition were perilla seeds, followed by sesame, sorghum and foxtail millet, whereas proso millet seeds were the least preferred. The bugs development period was faster in perilla seeds, with higher adult emergence, greater adult longevity and heavier adult weight. The higher oviposition preference and faster development with longer longevity of both Nysius species on perilla seeds is probably due to the physicochemical and nutritional attributes of the seeds. This information may enable the exploration of resistant genetic materials and chemical traits associated with seeds for breeding programme. Further, the outcomes of this study are discussed in terms of bug's behavioural response to crop seeds and management strategy of Nysius species as alternative to chemical management.  相似文献

Powders and extracts prepared from part and products of four plants species indigenous to Nigeria were tested under laboratory condition at 28?±?2?°C and 75?±?5% relative humidity for their insecticidal potential against Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella. Adult S. cerealella were exposed to three concentrations at rate 0.5, 1 and 2?g of Capsicum frutescens, Cymbopogon citratus, Moringa oleifera and Anacardium occidentale powders and extracts at the rate of 1, 2 and 3%/20?g of wheat grains. Parameters evaluated were adult moth mortality, adult emergence and % hatchability in treated wheat grains after infestation. Results show that significant differences (p?<?0.05) existed among the powders and the concentrations. The powder of C. frutescens had the highest mortality rate of 100% after two?days of application at all tested concentrations. There were no adult emergence of moth in samples treated with C. frutescens and A. occidentale powders. The extracts completely killed all the adult moths introduced at all tested concentrations. The survival of the moth from egg to adult when treated with the plant powders showed that there was significantly (p?<?0.05) more adult in the control (71.3) compared to others. Extracts of all the tested plants were toxic to adult moth and also prevent hatching of the eggs of S. cerealella.  相似文献

Water extract of fresh frass of Spodoptera littoralis larval instars (L1–3, L4, L5 and L6) fed on Castor oil leaves was prepared by soaking at concentration (20?g frass/50?ml distiled water) followed by steering before filtration. Oviposition deterrent activity of the extract to S. littoralis and A. ipsilon adult females was evaluated as the mean number of laid eggs in treatments in comparison with control under laboratory conditions. Total amount of phenols and flavonoids in larval frass was determined. Extraction of L6 frass obtained complete oviposition deterrent to S. littoralis adult moths and the minimum number of laid eggs by A. ipsilon adult females (11.8?eggs/female) in comparison with control (1026.0 and 848.2?eggs/female respectively). Maximum number of laid eggs by S. littoralis females was 361.0/f at treatment with L1–3 frass extract and 748.0/adult female of A. ipsilon at treatment with L4 frass extract. Low amount of phenols and/or flavonoids in frass extract of L6 increased the oviposition deterrent effect while high amount of them as obtained in L4 frass extract (3.504 and 1.610%, respectively) decreased the effect at both of tested insects.  相似文献

Abstract

Imbalance of free radicals over antioxidants in human body may result in oxidative damage to biomolecules (lipids, proteins, DNA) that causes severe chronic diseases. The aim of this proposed research was to examine the hypoglycemic and oxidative stress potential of fava bean (Vicia faba L.) seed extract. Acetone extract showed a significant effect on glucose uptake rate (77.28?±?2.42%) in yeast cells at 25?mM glucose concentration. Minimum glucose uptake rate was found to be 52.36?±?2.06% % by chloroform seed extract. Atomic force microscopy revealed that 3% hydrogen peroxide concentration results in roughness was found to be maximum (441?±?6.7?nm) and along with extract treatment showed a significant reduction in roughness (251?±?6.2?nm). Propidium iodide and DAPI staining showed apoptotic ratio as 0.40 (40?±?1.18%,) and 0.42 (42?±?1.16%) in hydrogen peroxide treated cell only as compared to other treatments. MTT assay showed that acetone extract had maximum survival rate (82.067%) and least survival rate was found in chloroform extract (70.48%). Hypoglycaemic potential and oxidative stress might be polyphenols (phenolics, flavonoids) present in seed extract or synergistic effect.  相似文献

Crops in the Family Malvaceae are attacked by various insect pests especially Podagria species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) at different stages of their development. The emergence of biodegradable pesticides (botanicals) as safe option has reduced the problems that result from the use of synthetic insecticides, thus creating a renewed interest in their development and use in integrated pest management of crops. Therefore, field experiments were conducted to investigate the control capability of water extracts of Piper guineense seeds and Cypermethrin on flea beetles (Podagrica spp.) infesting okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench). The experiments were conducted in two locations in the rain forest zone of Nigeria. The first experiment was conducted at the Teaching and Research Farm of The Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State (2011 Early cropping season), while the second experiment was carried out at the Teaching and Research Farm of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State (2011 Late cropping season). A synthetic insecticide (Cypermethrin) was included in the treatments as a standard check alongside the untreated (control). The experimental design was laid out in a randomised complete block design with five treatments replicated three times. The effectiveness of the treatments was determined based on reduction in the population of the adult insects. The results showed that water extract of P. guineense seeds and the synthetic insecticide significantly (p?<?0.05) reduced the population of the flea beetles as compared with the control. The synthetic insecticide-treated plots produced the highest standard check, but this was not significantly different from the dried yield recorded in the plots sprayed with aqueous extracts of P. guineense seeds. The results of field trials in both cropping seasons showed that all the treatments significantly suppressed the infestation by the flea beetles throughout the study period. In view of the ability of water extract of P. guineense seeds to control the infestation of Podagrica spp. its use by farmers is therefore recommended.  相似文献
