Abstract

Three concentrations (5, 10 and 20% w/v) and spraying schedules (2×, 4× and 6× weekly applications) of garlic, Allium sativum L. bulb extracts were assayed for efficacy against Maruca vitrata Fab. and Clavigralla tomentosicollis Stal. on cowpea under rain fed conditions in two seasons. The results showed that application of aqueous garlic bulb extracts at all the treatment levels significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the populations of the target pests compared with the untreated check. Application of 10 and 20% garlic bulb extracts with 4 or 6 weekly applications gave better control of these pests, protected the pods from damage and increased grain yields on treated cowpea compared with 5% extract at all three application schedules and were comparable to the synthetic insecticide treatment. This material could play a role in the integrated management of M. vitrata and C. tomentosicollis on cowpea fields managed by limited resource farmers in developing countries. The plant material is readily available, cheap, safe, non phytotoxic and technologically simple to use.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of weekly foliar application of extracts of Gmelina arborea (L.) fruits, bark and leaves on flower bud thrips, Megalurothrips sjostedti Trybom and the pod carrying capacity of cowpea variety SAMPEA 7, were investigated in field studies in the 1998 and 1999 cropping seasons. All the Gmelina extracts and the synthetic insecticide (Uppercott) caused significant a reduction of thrips on treated plots compared to the untreated check. However, no significant differences were observed on the number of thrips after the first two weeks of spraying and insect sampling between the fruits, bark extracts on one hand and Uppercott on the other in both seasons. This period corresponds to the period of high thrips number on this variety of cowpea planted in the northern Guinea savanna ecological zone of Nigeria. Pod density (a measure of the ability of insecticides to control the population of thrips on field cowpea) observed in untreated plots was inferior to those in treated plots. Uppercott treated plots had superior pod density compared to plots sprayed with Gmelina extracts while the fruit extract produced superior number of pods among the other extracts treated plots.  相似文献

Evaluation of protectant ability of Newbouldia laevis (Seem.) extracts against infestation by Callosobruchus maculatus in cowpea, Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp.) was carried out in the laboratory at ambient temperature of 28?±?2?°C and 70?±?5% relative humidity. Extracts from wood ash, leaf, stem and root bark were tested at different concentrations of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5%. One hundred per cent mortality of adult beetles was achieved at all concentrations within 72?h of treatment with extracts except in wood ash at 1% concentration, but they were significantly different (p?<?0.05) from the controls. All the extracts were still able to cause high beetle mortality after one, two and three months of cowpea storage at high concentrations (4 and 5%) except wood ash, although there was a slight decrease in mortality during the period of storage. All the extracts significantly (p?<?0.05) reduced oviposition and adult emergence of C. maculatus when compared with the controls although the reduction was higher at 5% concentration than others. Adult beetle emergence was completely prevented at higher concentrations (4 and 5%) except in wood ash. Both oviposition and adult emergence increased during the months of storage probably because of the slight reduction in the effectiveness of the extracts. The root bark extract was much more effective in reducing oviposition and adult emergence than others throughout the period of storage. The plant extracts of N. laevis was able to protect the cowpea seeds from damage and prevent weight loss. Cowpea seed damage and weight loss was significantly more (p?<?0.05) in the controls than other for the three-month duration probably because of the more adult emergence. The extracts from N. laevis did not adversely affect the germination of the protected seeds and seed germination ranged from 86.7 to 100%. It has been shown in this study that the extracts of N. laevis were effective against C. maculatus in cowpea although the root bark extract seemed to be the most effective while the wood ash extract was least effective. Their effectiveness, however, slightly decreased during the period of storage. N. laevis could be incorporated into pest management of stored cowpeas since the products are ecologically safe.  相似文献

Field trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of foliar spray of aqueous extracts of Tithonia diversifolia or Ocimum gratissimum on Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) and Alternaria leaf blight (ALB) diseases of sesame intercropped with maize. Spraying regime was at 2 weeks interval from 3 weeks after planting (WAP) until 12 WAP. Extracts of T. diversifolia or O. gratissimum reduced the incidence and severity of both diseases. CLS incidence and severity as well as defoliation was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced below what obtained in the unsprayed intercrop. ALB lesion size was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced by T. diversifolia extract at 8.0% (w/v) from 154.7 mm2 (sole crop) or 13.4 mm2 (unsprayed intercrop) to 4.9 mm2 (sprayed intercrop). T. diversifolia extract at 8.0% (w/v) enhanced higher values of grain yield/plant and incidence of normal seeds, and lower incidence of fungal infection of seeds than in the unsprayed intercrop.  相似文献

Abstract

The nut and shell of cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) were evaluated for insecticidal efficacy at concentrations of 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5% per 150 g bambarra groundnut (Voandzeia subterranea L.) Verde seeds against Callosobruchus subinnotatus (Pic.) (Bruchidae). Cashew nut shell was highly toxic to C. subinnotatus and achieved 100% insect mortality within 48 hours at 7.5% and 100% mortality within 72% hours at 2.5 and 5.0% concentrations. Oviposition and progeny development of the insect were severely suppressed while seeds were protected from damage by the bruchid. Seed germination was, however, impaired at all concentrations, suggesting that seed treated with cashew products may be suitable for consumption but not be suitable as planting stock.  相似文献

The relevance of the lignocellulosic substrate in the cultivation of mushrooms has lent support to the exploration of several lignocellulosic agro wastes. This study was, thus, aimed at the evaluation of durian peel as an alternative substrate for more sustainable mushroom cultivation and climate change mitigation. The secondary metabolites and biological activities of both aqueous and organic mushroom (Pleurotus pulmonarius (Fr.) Quel.) extract cultured on durian peel and rubberwood sawdust substrate were compared using GCMS, LCMS as well as various biological assays (cytotoxicity, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities). Mushroom extracts from durian peel substrates possess remarkable biological activities. The results showed that the aqueous extracts had poor antimicrobial activities. The organic extracts were more active against cancer cells than the aqueous extracts, while the aqueous extracts were more potent as antioxidants than the organic extracts. Overall, the mushroom extract from the durian substrate was the most effective except against A549 and SW948, while the aqueous extract from the durian substrate was the most effective against the A549 cancer cell lines with 29.53±2.39 % inhibition. On the other hand, the organic mushroom extract from the sawdust substrate was the most effective against SW948 with 60.24±2.45 % inhibition. Further studies, however, are needed to elucidate the molecular mechanism of action of P. pulmonarius extracts against cancer cell proliferation and the effect of the substrates on the nutritional composition, secondary metabolites, and other biological activities of P. pulmonarius extracts.  相似文献

Field experiments carried out in Dadinkowa, Gombe State, Nigeria, during 2007 and 2008 cropping seasons evaluated the efficacy of three aqueous plant extracts namely neem (Azadirachta indica A.H.L. Juss.), bitter melon (Momordica balsamina Linn.) and siam weed (Chromolaena odorota (L.) King and Robinson) compared to a conventional insecticide, Lamdacot 500EC, in managing fruit borer (Daraba laisalis Wlk.) attack of eggplants in north-eastern Nigeria. The experiments were laid out in a randomised complete block design replicated four times including controls. The results showed that the application of aqueous extracts (5% w/v concentration) of A. indica and M. balsamina at one-week interval during the fruiting stage was effective and at par with the conventional insecticide, Lamdacot, in reducing eggplant fruit borer infestation and fruit damage, as well as the resulting increase in fruit yield. Farmers can therefore adopt the practice of applying 5% w/v concentration of the above aqueous plant extracts at weekly intervals to control fruit borer attack of eggplants in the north-eastern region of Nigeria.  相似文献

Cheese wood, Alstonia boonei De Wild stem bark was extracted with five different solvents namely: methanol, ethanol, acetone, petroleum ether and n-hexane. The extracts were tested for insecticidal activity on cowpea bruchid, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fab.). Adult mortality and adult emergence of the insects were investigated. Oviposition deterrences using dual-choice and multiple-choice tests were also investigated as well as percentage damage and weight loss at temperature of 28?±?2?°C and 75?±?5% relative humidity. Results showed that at the rate of 2% extract per 20?g of cowpea seeds, methanol, petroleum ether and n-hexane extracts caused 100% mortality of adult cowpea bruchid after four?days of post treatment. When the bruchid had choice of oviposition substrate, they laid significantly (p?<?0.05) fewer eggs on cowpea seeds treated with extracts compared to untreated seeds. There was no adult emergence in seeds treated with methanol, ethanol, petroleum ether and n-hexane extracts and 100% reduction in F1 progeny was recorded compared with untreated that had 81.86% adults emergence and 0% reduction in F1 progeny. The results obtained from this study revealed that methanol, ethanol, acetone, petroleum ether and n-hexane extracts of A. boonei stem bark were effective in controlling C. maculatus and could serve as an alternative to synthetic insecticides for the protection of stored cowpeas against bruchids.  相似文献

Combined infection of cowpea seedlings (c. v. ‘California Blackeye”) by cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) and Fusarium oxysporum induced greater losses in leaf area, fresh and dry weights than infection by either pathogen alone. The growth of seedlings infected by F. oxysporum f. sp. tracheiphilum was less than that of comparable seedlings infected by F. oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli. The virus infectivity of extracts of the trifoliate leaves of dual-infected plants was significantly higher than that of comparable extracts from the leaves of plants singly infected with CPMV. The nature of the effects of multiple infection in cowpea is discussed.  相似文献

Spermacoce verticillata (L.) G. Mey. is commonly used in the folk medicine by various cultures to manage common diseases. Herein, the chemical and biological profiles of S. verticillata were studied in order to provide a comprehensive characterization of bioactive compounds and also to highlight the therapeutic properties. The in vitro antioxidant activity using free-radical scavenging, phosphomolybdenum, ferrous-ion chelating and reducing power assays, and the inhibitory activity against key enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), tyrosinase, α-amylase and α-glucosidase of S. verticillata extracts (dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water) were investigated. The highest total phenolic and flavonoid content were observed in the methanolic and aqueous extracts. Exhaustive 2DNMR investigation has revealed the presence of rutin, ursolic and oleanoic acids. The methanolic extract, followed by aqueous extract have showed remarkable free radical quenching and reducing ability, while the dichloromethane extract was the best source of metal chelators. The tested extracts showed notable inhibitory activity against cholinesterases (AChE: 1.63–4.99 mg GALAE/g extract and BChE: 12.40–15.48 mg GALAE/g extract) and tyrosinase (60.85–159.64 mg KAE/g extract). No inhibitory activity was displayed by ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts against BChE and tyrosinase, respectively. All the tested extracts showed modest α-amylase inhibitory activity, while only the ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts were potent against α-glycosidase. This study further validates the use of S. verticillata in the traditional medicine, while advocating for further investigation for phytomedicine development.  相似文献

Present paper reports the effects of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.) juice and bagasse, respectively on protective immune responses in industrial broiler chickens against coccidiosis. Immunotherapeutic efficacies of the extracts were measured by evaluating their effect on body weight gain, oocyst shedding, lesion score, anti-coccidial indices, per cent protection and elicited serum antibody responses against coccidiosis. Results revealed a significantly lower (P < 0.05) oocyst shedding and mortality in chickens administered with sugar cane extracts as compared to control. Further, significantly higher (P < 0.05) body weight gains and antibody responses were detected in chickens administered with sugar cane extracts as compared to chickens of control group. Moreover, ethanolic extract showed higher anti-coccidia index (227.61) as compared to aqueous extract (192.32). The organ body weight ratio of the lymphoid organs of experimental and control groups were statistically non-significant (P > 0.01). These results demonstrated that both ethanolic and aqueous extracts of sugar cane possess immune enhancing properties and their administration in chickens augments the protective immunity against coccidiosis.  相似文献

The compatibility of the nematode-bacteria complex of Steinernema carpocapsae, Steinernema abbasi, and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora with neem plant extracts (seeds and leaves) to control diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) on Chinese cabbage plants was investigated under laboratory conditions. The initial treatment of Chinese plant leaves with neem plant extracts resulted in more susceptibility of P. xylostella to neem seeds extract than neem leaves extract. The combination studies resulted in a higher synergistic effect of nematode-bacteria complex of H. bacteriophora, S. abbasi and S. carpocapsae with neem seeds extract compared with that of S. abbasi with neem leaves extract. In contrast, the combination of nematode-bacteria complex of S. carpocapsae and H. bacteriophora with neem leaves extract gave an antagonistic effect. On the other hand, the time-mortality response was more reduced with neem seeds extract than with neem leaves extract, besides it was a concentration dependant factor. We conclude from these investigations that the combination of entomopathogenic nematodes with neem plant extracts could be of success in controlling P. xylostella on Chinese cabbage plants in the field.  相似文献

Partially purified, cell-free extracts from nodules of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp. cv. Caloona) and soybean (Glycine max L. Merr. cv. Bragg) showed high rates of de novo purine nucleotide and purine base synthesis. Activity increased with rates of nitrogen fixation and ureide export during development of cowpea plants; maximum rates (equivalent to 1.2 micromoles N2 per hour per gram fresh nodule) being similar to those of maximum nitrogen fixation (1-2 micromoles N2 per hour per gram fresh nodule). Extracts from actively fixing nodules of a symbiosis not producing ureides, Lupinus albus L. cv. Ultra, showed rates of de novo purine synthesis 0.1% to 0.5% those of cowpea and soybean. Most (70-90%) of the activity was associated with the particulate components of the nodule, but up to 50% was released from this fraction by osmotic shock. The accumulated end products with particulate fractions were inosine monophosphate and aminoimidazole carboxamide ribonucleotide. Further metabolism to purine bases and ureides was restricted to the soluble fraction of the nodule extract. High rates of inosine monophosphate synthesis were supported by glutamine as amide donor, lower rates (10-20%) by ammonia, and negligible rates with asparagine as substrate.  相似文献

In contrast to the strawberry fruits, strawberry leaves as a source of bioactive compounds with potentially beneficial biological effects have been largely overlooked. In this study we examined direct, dose-dependent effects of wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca, L.) leaves aqueous extract, in two experimental models and animal species, the isolated guinea pig hearts and rat aortic rings. Vasodilatory potential of the wild strawberry leaves extract was compared with vasodilatory activity of aqueous extract of hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha, L) leaves with flowers, which can be regarded as a reference plant extract with a marked vasodilatory activity. The extracts were analysed by their “phenolic fingerprints”, total phenolic content and antioxidative capacity. Their vasodilatory activity was determined and compared in the isolated aortic rings from 24 rats that were exposed to the extracts doses of 0.06, 0.6, 6, and 60 mg/100 ml. Both extracts induced similar, dose-dependent vasodilation. Maximal relaxation was 72.2±4.4% and 81.3±4.5%, induced by the strawberry and hawthorn extract, respectively. To determine vasodilatory mechanisms of the wild strawberry leaves extract, endothelium-denuded and intact rings exposed to nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor l-NAME or cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin were used. Removal of the endothelium prevented and exposure to l-NAME or indomethacin strongly diminished the vasodilatatory response to the extract. In the isolated hearts (n=12), the wild strawberry extract was applied at concentrations of 0.06, 0.18, 0.6, and 1.8 mg/100 ml. Each dose was perfused for 3.5 min with 15 min of washout periods. Heart contractility, electrophysiological activity, coronary flow and oxygen consumption were continuously monitored. The extract did not significantly affect heart rate and contractility, main parameters of the cardiac action that determine oxygen demands, while coronary flow increased up to 45% over control value with a simultaneous decrease of oxygen extraction by 34%.The results indicate that the aqueous extract of wild strawberry leaves is a direct, endothelium-dependent vasodilator, action of which is mediated by NO and cyclooxygenase products and which potency is similar to that of the hawthorn aqueous extract.  相似文献

Summary Inhibitory extracts of carob and abscisic acid (ABA) were compared and found to behave differently in three types of tests. The carob inhibitors remained at the origin upon thin-layer chromatography in two different solvent systems while a cis-trans mixture of ABA had Rf's of 2.5 and 3.5 in the first system (chloroform:acetic acid, 95:5), and 3.5 and 4.5 in the second system (benzene:acetic acid:water, 8:3:5). When ABA and carob extract were mixed and then chromatographed, the ABA had the same Rf values as ABA chromatographed alone.Assays utilizing light-grown, dwarf peas showed that a weight ratio of 1000: 1 ABA:gibberellic acid (GA3) was necessary to inhibit GA3-induced growth by 50% while carob fraction C is inhibitory to GA3 at a ratio of 17:1. The amount of ABA which inhibited 50% of the growth induced by 0.05 g GA3 reduced the endogenous growth of both dwarf and non-dwarf pea seedlings; in contrast, concentrations of carob extract up to 100 times greater than the amount necessary for 50% inhibition of the growth response caused by 0.05 g GA3 did not affect endogenous growth.Only very small amounts of inhibitory activity from carob extract were transferred from water to chloroform at a pH (2.0) at which most of the ABA was transferred.  相似文献

This study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of fruits of Syzygium cumini, against the mycelial growth of Alternaria alternata and Fusarium oxysporum. The results showed that ethanolic extract at the concentrations of 7.5 and 9?mg/ml completely inhibited the mycelial growth of A. alternata and F. oxysporum, respectively. While the aqueous extract at a highest tested concentration (37.5?mg/ml) exhibited only 27.86 and 37.23% inhibition of mycelial growth of A. alternata and F. oxysporum, respectively. The spore germination assay also showed the complete inhibition of spore germination of A. alternata and F. oxysporum by ethanolic extract at 50 and 60?mg/ml concentrations, respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentration was recorded as 0.039 and 0.156?mg/ml in ethanolic extract and 20 and 6.25?mg/ml in aqueous extract against A. alternata and F. oxysporum, respectively. Phytochemical analysis also showed the presence of high amount of phenolics, tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids and saponins.  相似文献

Abstract

Box–Behnken Design (BBD) was used to optimize the extraction conditions of polyphenols from Malva (Malva parviflora L.) leaves. The effect of ethanol concentration (20–80%), solvent/leaf powder ratio (10:1 to 30:1, v/w) and extraction time (5–45?min) on the polyphenols yield and the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of the obtained extracts were investigated. Quadratic models fit well. The optimal conditions (53.40% ethanol, solvent/leaf powder ratio 20:1 (v/w), and 15?min) resulted in an extract with a maximum yield of polyphenols (1098.4?mg GAE/100?g leaf powder) and high inhibition percentage of DPPH radical (33.31%) with desirability 0.742. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis indicated that the major identified polyphenol compounds extracted at the optimal conditions were naringenin, ρ-coumaric acid, apigenin-7-glucoside, luteolin, and cinnamic acid. These findings indicate that M. parviflora leaf extracts possess DPPH radical scavenging activity and could be used as a natural source for bioactive products.  相似文献

Studies on the growth and respiration of batch suspension cultures of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in a reference medium containing Murashige-Skoog salts, 2% (w/v) sucrose and yeast extract are reported. It was found that the yeast extract contributed 70% of the phosphate in this medium, and that the cells grew equally well in continued subculture in a defined medium which contained 6 mM phosphate and 3% (w/v) sucrose and the remaining Murashige-Skoog salts. Cell clumps (up to 1.5 mm diameter) were prevalent in the initial cultures in the reference medium. In such cultures the critical O2 pressure of cell respiration was high (125 M), and ethanol accumulated. When cell clumps were routinely removed during several weekly subcultures on the defined medium cultures were obtained in which no clumps were present, the critical O2 pressures was decreased to 40 M and no ethanol accumulated. This work was supported by grant PCM-84-03542 from the U.S. National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Abstract

Phelipanche ramosa, a root parasitic weed, is a copious seed producer. A series of laboratory experiments was undertaken to investigate the effects of powder and aqueous extracts from Euphorbia hirta on germination, and haustorium initiation in P. ramosa. P. ramosa seeds conditioned in water and subsequently treated with diluted E. hirta extract (10–25% v/v) displayed considerable germination (47–62%). Increasing extract concentration to 50% or more reduced germination in response to the synthetic germination stimulants GR24 and Nijmegen?i in a concentration dependent manner. P. ramosa germlings treated with diluted Euphorbia extract (10–75% v/v) displayed haustorium initiation comparable to the synthetic haustorium factor 2, 6-dimethoxybenzoquinone (DMBQ) at 20 µM. Euphorbia extract applied during conditioning reduced haustorium initiation in a concentration dependent manner. E. hirta extract or air-dried powder, applied to soil, induced considerable P. ramosa germination. The results indicate the plausibility of using E. hirta air-dried powder or extract as spot treatments to induce suicidal germination of Striga hermonthica.  相似文献
