A model for water uptake by plant roots   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We present a model for water uptake by plant roots from unsaturated soil. The model includes the simultaneous flow of water inside the root network and in the soil. It is constructed by considering first the water uptake by a single root, and then using the parameterized results thereby obtained to build a model for water uptake by the developing root network. We focus our model on annual plants, in particular the model will be applicable to commercial monocultures like maize, wheat, etc. The model is solved numerically, and the results are compared with approximate analytic solutions. The model predicts that as a result of water uptake by plant roots, dry and wet zones will develop in the soil. The wet zone is located near the surface of the soil and the depth of it is determined by a balance between rainfall and the rate of water uptake. The dry zone develops directly beneath the wet zone because the influence of the rainfall at the soil surface does not reach this region, due to the nonlinear nature of the water flow in the partially saturated soil. We develop approximate analytic expressions for the depth of the wet zone and discuss briefly its ecological significance for the plant. Using this model we also address the question of where water uptake sites are concentrated in the root system. The model indicates that the regions near the base of the root system (i.e. close to the ground surface) and near the root tips will take up more water than the middle region of the root system, again due to the highly nonlinear nature of water flow in the soil.  相似文献

The suitability of microtensiometers to measure the spatial variation of soil matric potential and its diurnal change was tested in a pot experiment with pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum [L.] Leeke) in a sandy soil as the soil dried out.The temporal and spatial resolution of this technique allowed precise measurement of soil matric potential and thus estimation of soil water extraction from different compartments as well as from the whole rooting zone. The technique also allowed the measurement of rehydration of plants at night and root water uptake rate per unit soil volume or per unit root length. The precision of determination of root water uptake depended greatly on the accuracy of the estimate of hydraulic conductivity, which was derived from a bare soil and might be different for a cropped soil owing to aggregation induced by the root system. A linear relationship between root length and water uptake was found (r2=0.82), irrespective of variation in soil water content between compartments and despite the variation in root age, xylem differentiation and suberin formation expected to exist between different compartments of the rooting zone. As the experiment was carried out in a range of soil matric potentials between –4 and –30 kPa, drought stress did not occur. Further information at lower soil matric potentials are required, to address questions such as the importance of soil resistance for water uptake, or which portion of the root system has to be stressed to induce hormonal signals to the shoot. The microtensiometer technique can be applied to soil matric potentials up to –80 kPa.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Cereals have two root systems. The primary system originates from the embryo when the seed germinates and can support the plant until it produces grain. The nodal system can emerge from stem nodes throughout the plant''s life; its value for yield is unclear and depends on the environment. The aim of this study was to test the role of nodal roots of sorghum and millet in plant growth in response to variation in soil moisture. Sorghum and millet were chosen as both are adapted to dry conditions.

Methods

Sorghum and millet were grown in a split-pot system that allowed the primary and nodal roots to be watered separately.

Key Results

When primary and nodal roots were watered (12 % soil water content; SWC), millet nodal roots were seven times longer than those of sorghum and six times longer than millet plants in dry treatments, mainly from an 8-fold increase in branch root length. When soil was allowed to dry in both compartments, millet nodal roots responded and grew 20 % longer branch roots than in the well-watered control. Sorghum nodal roots were unchanged. When only primary roots received water, nodal roots of both species emerged and elongated into extremely dry soil (0·6–1·5 % SWC), possibly with phloem-delivered water from the primary roots in the moist inner pot. Nodal roots were thick, short, branchless and vertical, indicating a tropism that was more pronounced in millet. Total nodal root length increased in both species when the dry soil was covered with plastic, suggesting that stubble retention or leaf mulching could facilitate nodal roots reaching deeper moist layers in dry climates. Greater nodal root length in millet than in sorghum was associated with increased shoot biomass, water uptake and water use efficiency (shoot mass per water). Millet had a more plastic response than sorghum to moisture around the nodal roots due to (1) faster growth and progression through ontogeny for earlier nodal root branch length and (2) partitioning to nodal root length from primary roots, independent of shoot size.

Conclusions

Nodal and primary roots have distinct responses to soil moisture that depend on species. They can be selected independently in a breeding programme to shape root architecture. A rapid rate of plant development and enhanced responsiveness to local moisture may be traits that favour nodal roots and water use efficiency at no cost to shoot growth.  相似文献

  1. Deep roots have long been thought to allow trees to coexist with shallow‐rooted grasses. However, data demonstrating how root distributions affect water uptake and niche partitioning are uncommon.
  2. We describe tree and grass root distributions using a depth‐specific tracer experiment six times over two years in a subtropical savanna, Kruger National Park, South Africa. These point‐in‐time measurements were then used in a soil water flow model to simulate continuous water uptake by depth and plant growth form (trees and grasses) across two growing seasons. This allowed estimates of the total amount of water a root distribution could absorb as well as the amount of water a root distribution could absorb in excess of the other rooting distribution (i.e., unique hydrological niche).
  3. Most active tree and grass roots were in shallow soils: The mean depth of water uptake was 22 cm for trees and 17 cm for grasses. Slightly deeper rooting distributions provided trees with 5% more soil water than the grasses in a drier season, but 13% less water in a wetter season. Small differences also provided each rooting distribution (tree or grass) with unique hydrological niches of 4 to 13 mm water.
  4. The effect of rooting distributions has long been inferred. By quantifying the depth and timing of water uptake, we demonstrated how even small differences in rooting distributions can provide plants with resource niches that can contribute to species coexistence. Differences in total water uptake and unique hydrological niche sizes were small in this system, but they indicated that tradeoffs in rooting strategies can be expected to contribute to tree and grass coexistence because 1) competitive advantages change over time and 2) plant growth forms always have access to a soil resource pool that is not available to the other plant growth form.

This investigation was performed to examine qualitatively and quantitatively the reverse flow in partially dried roots of Sesbania rostrata using the constant power heat balance method. First, a semi-empirical technique for estimating sheath conductance of sap-flow sensors without assuming that sap flow is zero at night was proposed. Sap flow measured with the heat balance method was compared with water uptake as measured by a potometric method. Sap flow was overestimated by 56·1% for a 3·3-mm-diameter root, and by 40·0% for 6·1 mm and 33·3% for 8·8 mm roots. However, high correlation coefficients between the rates of water uptake and sap flow demonstrated that calibration would provide reliable values for root sap flow. To detect reverse flow, a split root experiment was conducted using a S. rostrata plant with its root system divided between dry and wet compartments. Daily sap flow of the drying compartment declined whereas that in ‘wet’ root increased, suggesting that the decrease in water uptake by ‘dry’ roots was offset by the ‘wet’ roots. Reverse flow was observed at night in the root on the dry side of the container when the soil water potential was less than –0·30 MPa. The total amount of water released into the soil during the night period was estimated to be 22·5 g.  相似文献

Testing of existing agronomic models is needed to ensure their validity and applicability to different soils, cropping systems and environments. Data collected from a 3-year field experiment of maize (zea mays L.) on a loamy sand and a clay loam soil were used to validate the research version of the LEACHMN model for water flow and N fate and transport. Three calibration scenarios with increasing levels of generalization for transformation rate coefficients were used based on: (i) each year, treatment and soil type (ii) 3-year average values for each treatment and soil type, and (iii) average over years and soil types. Model accuracy was tested using both graphical and statistical methods including 1:1 scale plot, root mean square error and normalized root mean square error, and correlation coefficient values. The model accurately predicted drainage water flow rate and volume under both sites. Calibrated N transformation rate constants for each treatment, year and soil type provided satisfactory predictions of growing season cumulative NO3–N leaching losses, and accurate predictions of growing season cumulative maize N uptake at both sites. The use of 3-year average rate constant values for each site resulted in fairly satisfactory predictions of NO3–N leaching losses on the clay loam site, but inaccurate predictions on the loamy sand site. The model provided accurate predictions of cumulative maize N uptake for both sites. Using the rate constant values averaged over years and soil types resulted mostly in inaccurate predictions. Use of year and soil type-specific N rate coefficients results in accurate LEACHMN predictions of N leaching and maize N uptake. When rate coefficients are generalized over years for each soil type, satisfactory model predictions may be expected when N dynamics are not strongly affected by yearly variations in organic N inputs.  相似文献

Background and aims

Soil compaction strongly affects water uptake by roots. The aim of the work was to examine soil—plant interactions with focus on the impact of distribution of compacted soil layers on growth and water uptake by wheat roots.

Methods

The growth-chamber experiment was conducted on wheat growth in soil with compacted soil layers. The system for maintaining constant soil water potential and measurement of daily water uptake from variously compacted soil layers was used.

Results

Layered soil compaction differentiated vertical root distribution to higher extent for root length than root mass. The propagation rate of a water extraction front was the highest through layers of moderately compacted soil. The root water uptake rate was on average 67 % higher from moderately than heavily compacted soil layers. Correlations between water uptake and the length of thick roots were increasing with increasing level of soil compaction.

Conclusions

The study shows that root amount, water uptake, propagation of water extraction and shoot growth strongly depend on the existence of compacted layers within soil profile. The negative effects of heavily compacted subsoil layer on water uptake were partly compensated by increased uptake from looser top soil layers and significant contribution of thicker roots in water uptake.  相似文献

While the rhizosphere presents a different chemical, physical and biological environment to bulk soil, most experimental and modelling investigations of plant growth and productivity are based on bulk soil parameters. In this study, water and nutrient acquisition by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) roots was investigated using rhizosphere- and root-system-scale modelling. The physical and chemical properties of rhizosphere soil could be influenced by phospholipid surfactants in the root mucilage. Two models were compared: a 2-dimensional (2D) Finite Element Method rhizosphere model, and a 3-dimensional (3D) root architecture model, ROOTMAP. ROOTMAP was parameterised to reproduce the results of the detailed 2D model, and was modified to include a rhizosphere soil volume. Lecithin (a phospholipid surfactant) could be exuded into the rhizosphere soil volume, decreasing soil water content and hydraulic conductivity at any given soil water potential, and decreasing phosphate adsorption to soil particles. The rhizosphere-scale modelling (5 × 5 mm2 soil area, 10 mm root length, uptake over 12 h) predicted a reduction in water uptake (up to 16% at 30 kPa) and an increase in phosphate uptake (up to 4%) with lecithin exudation into the rhizosphere, but little effect on nitrate uptake, with only a small reduction in dry soil (1.6% at 200 kPa). The 3D root model reproduced the water (y = 1.013x, R2 = 0.996), nitrate (y = 1x, R2 = 1) and phosphate (y = 0.978x, R2 = 0.998) uptake predictions of the rhizosphere model, providing confidence that a whole root system model could reproduce the dynamics simulated by a Finite Element Method rhizosphere model. The 3D root architecture model was then used to scale-up the rhizosphere dynamics, simulating the effect of lecithin exudation on water, nitrate and phosphate acquisition by a wheat root system, growing over 41 d. When applied to growing and responsive roots, lecithin exudation increased P acquisition by up to 13% in nutrient-rich, and 49% in relatively nutrient-poor soil. A comparison of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) root architectures, suggested an interaction between the P acquisition benefit of rhizosphere lecithin and root architecture, with the more highly-branched wheat root structure acquiring relatively more P in the presence of lecithin than the sparsely-branched lupin root system.  相似文献

The root zone dynamics of water uptake by a mature apple tree   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
We report the results from a field experiment in which we examined the spatial and temporal patterns of water uptake by a mature apple tree (Malus domestica Borkh., ‘Splendour’) in an orchard. Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) was used to measure changes in the soil's volumetric water content, and heat-pulse was used to monitor locally the rates of sap flow in the trunk and roots of the tree. We also measured the tree's distribution of root-length density and obtained supporting data to characterize the soil's hydraulic properties. The experimental data were used to examine the output of the WAVE-model (Vanclooster et al, 1995; Ecol. Model. 81, 183–185) in which soil water transport is predicted using Richards' equation, and where root uptake is represented by a distributed macroscopic sink term. When the surface soil layers were uniformly wet, 70% of the trees water uptake occurred in the top 0.4 m of the root zone, in which approximately 70% of the tree's fine roots were located. When a partial irrigation was applied to just one side of the root zone, the apple tree quickly shifted its pattern of water uptake with an almost two-fold increase in uptake from the wetter soil parts and a corresponding reduction in uptake from the drier parts. The response of root-sap flow to irrigation was almost immediate (i.e. root flow increased within hours of the irrigation). Following subsequent irrigations over the whole soil surface, TDR measurements revealed a surface-ward shift in the pattern of water extraction, and root flow measurements revealed a recovery in the uptake function of seemingly inactive roots located in the previously-dry soil. Via our root sap flow measurements, we observed two roots on the same tree locally responding quite differently to similar events of soil wetting. This observation suggests that there may be considerable functional variability across the apple root system. Our measurement-model calculations yielded similar results and stress the prime role played by the plant in modifying the root zone balance of water. Following an irrigation or rainfall event, root uptake by apple appears to be more dependent upon the near-surface availability of water than it is related to the distribution of fine roots.  相似文献

The significance of soil water redistribution facilitated by roots (an extension of "hydraulic lift", here termed hydraulic redistribution) was assessed for a stand of Artemisia tridentata using measurements and a simulation model. The model incorporated water movement within the soil via unsaturated flow and hydraulic redistribution and soil water loss from transpiration. The model used Buckingham-Darcy's law for unsaturated flow while hydraulic redistribution was developed as a function of the distribution of active roots, root conductance for water, and relative soil-root (rhizosphere) conductance for water. Simulations were conducted to compare model predictions with time courses of soil water potential at several depths, and to evaluate the importance of root distribution, soil hydraulic conductance and root xylem conductance on transpiration rates and the dynamics of soil water. The model was able to effectively predict soil water potential during a summer drying cycle, and the rapid redistribution of water down to 1.5 m into the soil column after rainfall events. Results of simulations indicated that hydraulic redistribution could increase whole canopy transpiration over a 100-day drying cycle. While the increase was only 3.5% over the entire 100-day period, hydraulic redistribution increased transpiration up to 20.5% for some days. The presence of high soil water content within the lower rooting zone appears to be necessary for sizeable increases in transpiration due to hydraulic redistribution. Simulation results also indicated that root distributions with roots concentrated in shallow soil layers experienced the greatest increase in transpiration due to hydraulic redistribution. This redistribution had much less effect on transpiration with more uniform root distributions, higher soil hydraulic conductivity and lower root conductivity. Simulation results indicated that redistribution of water by roots can be an important component in soil water dynamics, and the model presented here provides a useful approach to incorporating hydraulic redistribution into larger models of soil processes.

A quantitative model of wheat root systems is developed that links the size and distribution of the root system to the capture of water and nitrogen (which are assumed to be evenly distributed with depth) during grain filling, and allows estimates of the economic consequences of this capture to be assessed. A particular feature of the model is its use of summarizing concepts, and reliance on only the minimum number of parameters (each with a clear biological meaning). The model is then used to provide an economic sensitivity analysis of possible target characteristics for manipulating root systems. These characteristics were: root distribution with depth, proportional dry matter partitioning to roots, resource capture coefficients, shoot dry weight at anthesis, specific root weight and water use efficiency. From the current estimates of parameters it is concluded that a larger investment by the crop in fine roots at depth in the soil, and less proliferation of roots in surface layers, would improve yields by accessing extra resources. The economic return on investment in roots for water capture was twice that of the same amount invested for nitrogen capture.  相似文献

Resistance to Water Flow in the Seminal Roots of Wheat   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Water uptake by the seminal root system of wheat is describedby a model which incorporates radial and axial resistance toflow in the root and the resistance to flow in the soil. Inan experiment where wheat plants were dependent on subsoil waterextracted from below 45 cm by one, three, or five seminal roots, calculations indicated that the axial resistance was the dominantresistance within the soil-root system and that flow rate changedpredictably with changing axial resistance. The model also indicatedthat the observed shape of the metaxylem vessel in the seminalaxes has important effects on the pattern of water uptake.  相似文献

Partition of phenanthrene between water and roots was determined for 13 plant species using a batch equilibration technique. Partition coefficients (K rt) from 734 to 2,564 L/kg were measured. A simple model to estimate the partition of organic contaminants between roots and water was developed based on the composition of plant roots and the 1-octanol/water partitioning coefficient. The estimates were close to the observed results, with differences of < 14%. The partition coefficients of phenanthrene by root cell walls were 13–84% greater than sorption by the corresponding roots. The cell wall fraction—the dominant fraction of root organic components—was identified as the primary domain for partition of phenanthrene. The measured hydroponic uptake of phenanthrene into roots was always less than phenanthrene partition by plant roots. A modified sorption model containing a quasi-equilibrium factor (αpt) could reasonably predict hydroponic uptake by plant roots. The results obtained from this study provide insights into partition of highly lipophilic organic chemicals in roots, and provide convenient methods to estimate this partition as well as uptake of such chemicals in root–water systems.  相似文献

Nitrate uptake ability by maize roots during and after drought stress   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Buljovcic  Zaklina  Engels  Christof 《Plant and Soil》2001,229(1):125-135
The effects of different intensities and durations of soil drought and re-watering on the nitrate uptake ability of maize roots were studied. Plants were grown in split-root containers with one part of the root system subjected to different intensities and durations of soil drought and re-watering while the other part of the root system was continuously watered to 23% (w/w) soil water content (70% water capacity). Experiments were performed in split-root containers to maintain a high growth rate, thus ensuring high nutrient demand of the shoot irrespective of the soil water regime. To avoid limitation of nitrate uptake by transport processes in the dry soil, and to ensure a uniform 14N/15N ratio at the root surface, 15N was applied to the roots by placing them into an aerated nutrient solution with 0.5 mM Ca(15NO3)2. Shoot elongation and biomass were only slightly affected by drought in one root compartment when the soil in the other root compartment was kept wet. Therefore, the growth-related nutrient demand of the shoot remained at a high level. At moderate levels of soil drought (10% w/w water content) the ability of the roots for N-uptake was not affected even after 10 d of drought. N-uptake ability was reduced to about 20% of the well-watered control only when the soil water content was decreased to 5%. Total soluble sugar content of the roots increased with increasing soil drought, indicating that low N-uptake ability of roots subjected to severe soil drought was not caused by low assimilate supply from the shoot. Nitrate uptake ability of roots maintained in very dry soil (5% soil water content w/w) even for a prolonged period of 8 d, recovered within 3 d following re-watering. Root growth increased one day after re-watering. A short-term experiment with excised roots formerly subjected to severe soil drought showed that nitrate uptake ability recovered in old and young root segments after 2 d of re-watering. Obviously, the increase in N-uptake ability after re-watering was caused not only by new root growth but also by recovery of the uptake ability of formerly stressed roots.  相似文献

The lengths of roots and root hairs and the extent of root-induced processes affect phosphorus (P) uptake efficiency by plants. To assess the influence of variation in the lengths of roots and root hairs and rhizosphere processes on the efficiency of soil phosphorus (P) uptake, a pot experiment with a low-P soil and eight selected genotypes of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L) WALP) was conducted. Root length, root diameter and root hair length were measured to estimate the soil volume exploited by roots and root hairs. The total soil P was considered as a pool of Olsen-P, extractable with 0.5 M NaHCO3 at pH 8.5, and a pool of non-Olsen-P. Model calculations were made to estimate P uptake originated from Olsen-P in the root hair zone and the Olsen-P moving by diffusion into the root hair cylinder and non-Olsen-P uptake. The mean uptake rate of P and the mean rate of non-Olsen-P depletion were also estimated. The genotypes differed significantly in lengths of roots and root hairs, and in P uptake, P uptake rates and growth. From 6 to 85% of total P uptake in the soil volume exploited by roots and root hairs was absorbed from the pool of non-Olsen-P. This indicates a considerable activity of root-induced rhizosphere processes. Hence the large differences show that traits for more P uptake-efficient plants exist in the tested cowpea genotypes. This opens the possibility to breed for more P uptake-efficient varieties as a way to bring more sparingly soluble soil P into cycling in crop production and obtain capitalisation of soil P reserves.  相似文献
