The need for efficient use of agricultural chemicals and their potential adverse impact on critical water resources have increased the use of simulation models of the soil and plant system. Nevertheless, there is currently little or no agreement concerning model validity and applicability in varied soils and environments. The research version of LEACHMN (the N subroutine of LEACHM) was calibrated using field data including soil physical, hydraulic, and chemical properties, and maize (Zea mays L.) N uptake collected from a 3-yr nitrate leaching experiment. The field site consisted of plot-size lysimeters on clay loam and loamy sand soils with N fertilizer rates of 22, 100 and 134 kg N ha–1. The calibration involved adjusting nitrification, denitrification, and volatilization rate constants to optimize the fit between predicted and measured data. When calibrated for each treatment-year combination and soil type, the model simulations of soil profile NO3–N distribution were generally successful. The N transformation rate constants yielded by the calibration efforts were similar or close to those used in other model simulation studies. At both sites, the calibrated rate constants for the first year (following sod plowdown) were different from those for the subsequent two years. Denitrification rate constants were consistently higher for the clay site than for the sand site, while the nitrification rate constants were lower. N rate of application appeared not to affect the rate constants within each year-site combination, suggesting that cropping history and soil type had the greatest effect on N transformation rates.

Mathematical models may be used to develop management strategies that optimize the use of nutrients from complex sources such as manure in agriculture. The Precision Nitrogen Management (PNM) model is based on the LEACHN model and a maize N uptake/growth and yield model and focuses on developing more precise N management recommendations. The PNM model was evaluated for simulating drain flow nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) in a 3-yr study involving different times of liquid manure application on two soil textural extremes, a clay loam and a loamy sand under maize (Zea mays, L.) production. The model was calibrated for major N transformation rate constants including mineralization, nitrification and denitrification, and its performance was tested using two different calibration scenarios with increasing levels of generalization: (i) separate sets of rate constants for each individual soil type and (ii) a single set of rate constants for both soil types. When calibrated for each manure application treatment for each soil type, the model provided good simulations of monthly and seasonal drain flow NO3-N concentrations. The correlation coefficient (r) and Willmott’s index of agreement (d) ranged from 0.63 to 0.96 and 0.72 to 0.92, respectively. The calibrated model performed reasonably well when rate constant values averaged over manure application treatment for each soil type were used, with r and d values between 0.54 and 0.97, and 0.70 and 0.94, respectively, and greater accuracy for the clay loam soil. When rate constant values were averaged over manure application treatments and soil types, model performance was reasonably accurate for the fall time manure application on the clay loam (r and d of 0.60 and 0.91 and 0.72 and 0.92, respectively) and satisfactory for the spring time on the clay loam and the fall and spring times for the loamy sand soil (r and d between 0.56 and 0.90 and 0.58 and 0.84, respectively). The use of the model for predicting N dynamics under manure-fertilized maize cropping appears promising.

Summary A simulation model is described to interpret N fertilizer experiments on potatoes. It calculates the total growth of dry matter, the N uptake, the partition of dry matter and of N between tuber and foliage and the distribution of inorganic N down the profile for each day during the growing season. The validity of the model was tested against measurements of these parameters made at approximately fortnightly intervals on plots that received N fertilizer and those that received none in 4 experiments on a sand, 4 on a sandy loam and 3 on a clay soil.Simulated values were in reasonably good agreement with the measured values in all experiments. Overall the sums of squares of the differences between the simulated and measured values of the %N in the total plant, and the total amount of inorganic N in the top metre of soil and the logarithms of the total weight of dry matter, tuber dry weight, N uptake in the entire plant and N uptake in the tubers were each less than 25% of the sum of squares of the measured values about the mean.Only 9 inputs were required for the model. It was found essential to take account of differences in spring and summer leaching but not of inter-site differences in mineralization rate.

The effects of soil type, irrigation, and population density of Rotylenchulus reniformis on cotton were evaluated in a two-year microplot experiment. Six soil types, Fuquay sand, Norfolk sandy loam, Portsmouth loamy sand, Muck, Cecil sandy loam, and Cecil sandy clay, were arranged in randomized complete blocks with five replications. Each block had numerous plots previously inoculated with R. reniformis and two or more noninoculated microplots per soil type, one half of which were irrigated in each replicate for a total of 240 plots. Greatest cotton lint yields were achieved in the Muck, Norfolk sandy loam, and Portsmouth loamy sand soils. Cotton yield in the Portsmouth loamy sand did not differ from the Muck soil which averaged the greatest lint yield per plot of all soil types. Cotton yield was negatively related to R. reniformis PI (initial population density) in all soil types except for the Cecil sandy clay which had the highest clay content. Supplemental irrigation increased yields in the higher yielding Muck, Norfolk sandy loam, and Portsmouth loamy sand soils compared to the lower yielding Cecil sandy clay, Cecil sandy loam, and Fuquay sand soils. The Portsmouth sandy loam was among the highest yielding soils, and also supported the greatest R. reniformis population density. Cotton lint yield was affected more by R. reniformis Pi with irrigation in the Portsmouth loamy sand soil with a greater influence of Pi on lint yield in irrigated plots than other soils. A significant first degree PI × irrigation interaction for this soil type confirms this observation.

A field plot experiment was set up on a sandy loam soil of SW England in order to determine the efficiency of nitrogen use from different cattle manures. The manure treatments were low and high dry matter cattle slurries and one farmyard manure applied at a target rate of 200 kg total N ha(-1)year(-1), and an untreated control. There were three different cropping systems: ryegrass/clover mixture, maize/rye and maize/bare soil, which were evaluated during 1998/99 and 1999/00. Measurements were made of N losses, N uptake and herbage DM yields. Result showed that manure type had a significant effect on N utilisation only for maize. N balances were negative in maize (approximately -247 to -10 kg N) compared to grass (approximately 5-158 kg N). Agronomic management was more important than manure type in influencing N losses, where soil cultivation appeared to be a key factor when comparing maize and grass systems.

Spinach plants were grown in pots under controlled conditions in three different soils (a loamy sand, a silt loam at low mineral-N level and a silt loam at the double mineral-N level). The nitrogen uptake pattern varied considerably between the three soil types and was used to validate an equation between the relative growth rate and nitrogen content. This equation is based on the growth response of spinach plants grown hydroponically at equal environmental conditions either at optimum nitrogen supply (complete nutrient solution) or with a relative nitrate addition rate of 0.30 day–1, 0.225 day–1 or 0.15 day–1 effecting an exponential increase in nitrogen uptake. Growth in potted soil was slightly overestimated. Part of this bias was explained by the lower shoot weight ratio observed for the soil grown plants. This was demonstrated by the improvement in growth predictions when using net assimilation rate rather than relative growth rate as the driving variable in the model.

The relative distributions of tree and crop roots in agroforestry associations may affect the degree of complementarity which can be achieved in their capture of below ground resources. Trees which root more deeply than crops may intercept leaching nitrogen and thus improve nitrogen use efficiency. This hypothesis was tested by injection of small doses of (15NH4)2SO4 at 21.8 atom% 15N at different soil depths within established hedgerow intercropping systems on an Ultisol in Lampung, Indonesia. In the top 10 cm of soil in intercrops of maize and trees, root length density (Lrv) of maize was greater than that of Gliricidia sepium trees, which had greater Lrv in this topsoil layer than Peltophorum dasyrrachis trees. Peltophorum trees had a greater proportion of their roots in deeper soil layers than Gliricidia or maize. These vertical root distributions were related to the pattern of recovery of 15N placed at different soil depths; more 15N was recovered by maize and Gliricidia from placements at 5 cm depth than from placements at 45 or 65 cm depth. Peltophorum recovered similar amounts of 15N from placements at each of these depths, and hence had a deeper N uptake distribution than Gliricidiaor maize. Differences in tree Lrv across the cropping alley were comparatively small, and there was no significant difference (P<0.05) in the uptake of 15N placed in topsoil at different distances from hedgerows. A greater proportion of the 15N recovered by maize was found in grain following 15N placement at 45 cm or 65 cm depth than following placement at 5 cm depth, reflecting the later arrival of maize roots in these deeper soil layers. Thus trees have an important role in preventing N leaching from subsoil during early crop establishment, although they themselves showed a lag phase in 15N uptake after pruning. Residual 15N enrichment in soil was strongly related to application depth even 406 days after 15N placement, demonstrating the validity of this approach to mapping root activity distributions.

The objectives of this study were to estimate how soil type, elevated N deposition (0.7 vs. 7 g N m–2y–1) and tree species influence the potential effects of elevated CO2 (370 vs. 570 mol CO2 mol–1) on N pools and fluxes in forest soils. Model spruce-beech forest ecosystems were established on a nutrient-rich calcareous sand and on a nutrient-poor acidic loam in large open-top chambers. In the fourth year of treatment, we measured N concentrations in the soil solution at different depths, estimated N accumulation by ion exchange resin (IER) bags, and quantified N export in drainage water, denitrification, and net N uptake by trees. Under elevated CO2, concentrations of N in the soil solution were significantly reduced. In the nutrient-rich calcareous sand, CO2 enrichment decreased N concentrations in the soil solution at all depths (–45 to –100%). In the nutrient-poor acidic loam, the negative CO2 effect was restricted to the uppermost 5 cm of the soil. Increasing the N deposition stimulated the negative impact of CO2 enrichment on soil solution N in the acidic loam at 5 cm depth from –20% at low N inputs to –70% at high N inputs. In the nutrient-rich calcareous sand, N additions did not influence the CO2 effect on soil solution N. Accumulation of N by IER bags, which were installed under individual trees, was decreased at high CO2 levels under spruce in both soil types. Under beech, this decrease occurred only in the calcareous sand. N accumulation by IER bags was negatively correlated with current-years foliage biomass, suggesting that the reduction of soil N availability indices was related to a CO2-induced growth enhancement. However, the net N uptake by trees was not significantly increased by elevated CO2. Thus, we suppose that the reduced N concentrations in the soil solution at elevated CO2 concentrations were rather caused by an increased N immobilisation in the soil. Denitrification was not influenced by atmospheric CO2 concentrations. CO2 enrichment decreased nitrate leaching in drainage by 65%, which suggests that rising atmospheric CO2 potentially increases the N retention capacity of forest ecosystems.

There is a growing concern about excessive nitrogen (N) and water use in agricultural systems in North China due to the reduced resource use efficiency and increased groundwater pollution. A two-year experiment with two soil moisture by four N treatments was conducted to investigate the effects of N application rates and soil moisture on soil N dynamics, crop yield, N uptake and use efficiency in an intensive wheat–maize double cropping system (wheat–maize rotation) in the North China Plain. Under the experimental conditions, crop yield of both wheat and maize did␣not␣increase significantly at N rates above 200 kg N ha−1. Nitrogen application rates affected little on ammonium-N (NH4-N) content in the 0–100 cm soil profiles. Excess nitrate-N (NO3-N), ranging from 221 kg N ha−1 to 620 kg N ha−1, accumulated in the 0–100 cm soil profile at the end of second rotation in the treatments with N rates of 200 kg N ha−1 and 300 kg N ha−1. In general, maize crop has higher N use efficiency than wheat crop. Higher NO3-N leaching occurred in maize season than in wheat season due to more water leakage caused by the concentrated summer rainfall. The results of this study indicate that the optimum N rate may be much lower than that used in many areas in the North China Plain given the high level of N already in the soil, and there is great potential for reducing N inputs to increase N use efficiency and to mitigate N leaching into the groundwater. Avoiding excess water leakage through controlled irrigation and matching N application to crop N demand is the key to reduce NO3-N leaching and maintain crop yield. Such management requires knowledge of crop water and N demand and soil N dynamics as they change with variable climate temporally and spatially. Simulation modeling can capture those interactions and is considered as a powerful tool to assist in␣the␣future optimization of N and irrigation managements.

Soil compaction and forest floor removal influence fundamental soil processes that control forest productivity and sustainability. We investigated effects of soil compaction and forest floor removal on tree growth, N uptake and N status in ponderosa pine. Factorial combinations of soil compaction (non-compacted and compacted) and forest floor removal (forest floor present and no forest floor) were applied to three different surface soil textures. For studying N uptake, four trees from every treatment were 15N labeled with 130.6 mg m–2 of 15N. Tree responses to compaction were dependent on the forest floor removal level. In loam and clay soils, non-compacted+no forest floor was beneficial to tree growth. Tree growth was depressed with compaction+no forest floor in clay soil. In sandy loam soil, compaction+no forest floor showed the best tree growth. No N deficiency was found in any soil type but a graphical method suggested correlation between N status and tree growth. In loam and clay soils, compaction+forest floor present increased N uptake. Nitrogen uptake was explained significantly by potential N mineralization in loam and clay soils. In sandy loam soil, the effects of compaction and forest floor removal were more complex, with the N uptake improved in the compaction+no forest floor treatment and reduced under compaction+forest floor present. Soil compaction may have influenced N tracer uptake because of improved unsaturated flow and root-soil contact. However, N immobilization may have restricted N uptake in compaction+forest floor present in the sandy loam soil. The study illustrates how soil properties and site preparation can potentially interact to affect N dynamics and forest productivity.

A 3-year field lysimeter experiment was performed to determine transformations of 15N-labeled cauliflower (Brassica oleracea) residues incorporated into lysimeter topsoil in a potato (Solanum tuberosum)/cauliflower rotation. Only the potato crop received 150 kg mineral N ha?1y?1. Cauliflower yields were high (12–13 t fresh matter ha?1), and N returned to the soil represented 51% of the aboveground plant N uptake. The 15N recovery by the potato/cauliflower rotation began at 46%, then decreased sharply to 12 and 6% for the second and third year, respectively. The cumulative 15N leaching rate was only 3%; 63% remained in the soil 3 years after incorporation. Soil N mineralization rates described by a parallel first-order kinetic model predicted 27, 7 and 6% of residual N lost annually during the first, second and third year, respectively. Thus, a potato/cauliflower rotation with moderate N fertilization optimizes N recovery of crop residues and can control leaching loss efficiently.

Two animal slurries either labelled with 15N in the urine or in the faeces fraction, were produced by feeding a sheep with unlabelled and 15N-labelled hay and collecting faeces and urine separately. The slurries were applied (12 g total N -2) to a coarse sand and a sandy loam soil confined in lysimeters and growing spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L). Reference lysimeters without slurry were supplied with15 NH4 15NO3 corresponding to the inorganic N applied with the slurries (6 g N m-2). In the second year, all lysimeters received unlabelled mineral fertilizer (6 g N m-2) and grew spring barley. N harvested in the two crops (grain + straw) and the loss of nitrate by leaching were determined. 15N in the urine fraction was less available for crop uptake than mineral fertilizer 15N. The first barley crop on the sandy loam removed 49% of the 15N applied in mineral fertilizer and 36% of that applied with urine. The availability of fertilizer 15N (36%) and urine15 N (32%) differed less on the coarse sand. Of the15 N added with the faeces fraction, 12–14% was taken up by the barley crop on the two soils. N mineralized from faeces compensated for the reduced availability of urine N providing a similar or higher crop N uptake in manured lysimeters compared with mineral fertilized ones.About half of the total N uptake in the first crop originated from the N applied either as slurry or mineral fertilizer. The remaining N was derived from the soil N pool. Substantially smaller but similar proportions of15 N from faeces, urine and fertilizer were found in the second crop. The similar recoveries indicated a slow mineralization rate of the residual faeces N since more faeces was left in the soil after the first crop.More N was lost by leaching from manured lysimeters but as a percentage of N applied, losses were similar to those from mineral fertilizer. During the first and second winter, 3–5% and 1–3%, respectively, of the 15N in slurry and mineral fertilizer was leached as nitrate. Thus slurry N applied in spring just before sowing did not appear to be more prone to loss by nitrate leaching than N given in mineral fertilizer. Slurry N accounted for a higher proportion of the N leached, however, because more N was added in this treatment.

The objective of this study was to compare the N leaching loss and pasture N uptake from autumn-applied dairy shed effluent and ammonium fertilizer (NH4Cl) labeled with 15N, using intact soil lysimeters (80 cm diameter, 120 cm depth). The soil used was a sandy loam, and the pasture was a mixture of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens). The DSE and NH4Cl were applied twice annually in autumn (May) and late spring (November), each at 200 kg N ha-1. The N applied in May 1996 was labeled with 15N. The lysimeters were either spray or flood irrigated during the summer. The autumn-applied DSE resulted in lower N leaching losses compared with NH4Cl. However, the N applied in the autumn had a higher potential for leaching than N applied in late spring. Between 4.5–8.1% of the 15N-labeled mineral N in the DSE and 15.1–18.8% of the 15N-labeled NH4Cl applied in the autumn were leached within a year of application. Of the annual N leaching losses in the DSE treatments (16.0–26.9 kg N ha-1), a fifth (20.3–22.9%) was from the mineral N fraction of the DSE applied in the autumn, with the remaining larger proportion from the organic fraction of the DSE, soil N and N applied in spring. In the NH4Cl treatments, more than half (53.8–64.8%) of the annual N leaching loss (55.9–57.6 kg N ha-1) was derived from the autumn-applied NH4Cl. DSE was as effective as NH4Cl in stimulating pasture production. Since only 4.4–4.5% of the annual herbage N uptake in the DSE treatment and 12.3–13.3% in the NH4Cl treatment were derived from the autumn-applied mineral N, large proportions of the annual herbage N uptake must have been derived from the N applied in spring, the organic N fraction in the DSE, soil N and N fixed by clover. The recoveries of 15N in the herbage were similar between the DSE and the NH4Cl treatments, but those in the leachate were over 50% less from the DSE than from the NH4Cl treatment. The lower leaching loss of 15N in the DSE treatment was attributed to the stimulated microbial activities and increased immobilization following the application of DSE. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Field experiments were carried out in 1987 on winter wheat crops grown on three types of soil. 15N-labelled urea, 15NH4NO3 or NH4 15NO3 (80 kg N ha-1) was applied at tillering. The soils (chalky soil, hydromorphic loamy soil, sandy clay soil) were chosen to obtain a range of nitrogen dynamics, particularly nitrification. Soil microbial N immobilization and crop N uptake were measured at five dates. Shortly after fertilizer application (0–26 days), the amount of N immobilized in soil were markedly higher with labelled urea or ammonium than that with nitrate in all soils. During the same period, crop 15N uptake occurred preferentially at the expense of nitrate. Nitrification differed little between soils, the rates were 2.0 to 4.7 kg N ha-1 day-1 at 9°C daily mean temperature. The differences in immobilization and uptake had almost disappeared at flowering and harvest. 15N recovery in soil and crop varied between 50 and 100%. Gaseous losses probably occurred by volatilization in the chalky soil and denitrification in the hydromorphic loamy soil. These losses affected the NH4 + and NO3 - pools differently and determined the partitioning of fertilizer-N between immobilization and absorption.

Nitrogen (N) efficiency components and N accumulation parameters were determined for seven commercially available corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids grown on a Cecil sandy loam soil (Typic Hapludult) in the Southeasten U.S. The hybrids were grown in field plots at three soil pH levels (4.8, 5.5, and 6.6) and four N fertilizer rates (0.4, 1.8, 3.2, and 6.0, g plant−1). Nitrogen uilitzation efficiency (grain yield/total N uptake) was significantly different among hybrids in both 1983 and 1984. Differences in N use efficiency (grain yield/N supply) and N uptake efficiency (total N uptake/N supply) ranged from 100.4 to 114.6 and from 1.62 to 1.90, respectively, in 1984. Nitrogen fertilizer rate significantly affected all measured N accumulation and efficiency parameters except N uptake after silking in 1983. The results indicate that improving N uptake or soil N availability might increase grain yields for hybrids with higher N utilization efficiency.

Abstract After the introduction of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii into natural loamy sand and silt loam, bacterial numbers increased only directly after inoculation. Thereafter, bacterial numbers decreased until an equilibrium was reached. This decrease was exponential on a log scale and could be described by the function Y = A + B − R ', where Y is the log number of rhizobial cells at time: T ; A represents the lgo of the final population size; B is the difference between the log (initial number of bacteria) and A ; R is the daily reduction factor of Y−A and t is time in days after inoculation. The final population sizes increased with increasing inoculum densities (104−108 bacteria/g soil). In sterilized soil, however, the populations increased up to an equilibrium, which was not affected by the inoculum density.
The final population sizes were higher in silt loam than in loamy sand in natural, as well as in sterilized soil. The final population size was reached earlier in natural silt loam than in loamy sand. Also the growth rate in sterilized soil was higher in silt loam than in loamy sand. The growth rate of low inoculum densities in silt loam was exponential and approximately the same as in yeast extract mannitol broth. The growth rate in loamy sand could be improved by incresing the bulk density of the soil from 1.0 to 1.4 g/cm3.

A field lysimeter experiment was conducted over a 406 day period to determine the effect of different soil types on the fate of synthetic urinary nitrogen (N). Soil types included a sandy loam, silty loam, clay and peat. Synthetic urine was applied at 1000 kg N ha-1, during a winter season, to intact soil cores in lysimeters. Leaching losses, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, and plant uptake of N were monitored, with soil 15N content determined upon destructive sampling of the lysimeters. Plant uptake of urine-N ranged from 21.6 to 31.4%. Soil type influenced timing and form of inorganic-N leaching. Macropore flow occurred in the structured silt and clay soils resulting in the leaching of urea. Ammonium (NH 4 + –N), nitrite (NO 2 - –N) and nitrate (NO3 -–N) all occurred in the leachates with maximum concentrations, varying with soil type and ranging from 2.3–31.4 g NH 4 + –N mL-1, 2.4–35.6 g NO 2 - –N mL-1, and 62–102 g NO 3 - –N mL-1, respectively. Leachates from the peat and clay soils contained high concentrations of NO 2 - –N. Gaseous losses of N2O were low (<2% of N applied) over a 112 day measurement period. An associated experiment showed the ratio of N2–N:N2O–N ranged from 6.2 to 33.2. Unrecovered 15N was presumed to have been lost predominantly as gaseous N2. It is postulated that the high levels of NO 2 - –N could have contributed to chemodenitrification mechanisms in the peat soil.
