Alpinia speciosa L. (Zingiberaceae) is a striking example ofa plant in which an organized architectural structure fulfilsa basic functional requirement - the economical explorationand exploitation of the substrate. This rhizomatous plant spreadslaterally in a predictable manner by vegetative growth to forma clone of separated ramets. A morphological study establishes‘rules of growth’ governing the success and failureof lateral branches (sympodial units), their lengths, and theirrelative angles. The basic branching pattern of this rhizome system approximatesto that of a hexagonal grid - the most economical structuralshape that uniformly ‘samples’ a plane surface. It is shown that the significant deviation of branching anglefound in Alpinia from that required to develop an exact hexagonalnetwork will virtually eliminate aerial shoot ‘clashes’in which the placing of one aerial shoot coincides with thatof another aerial shoot, whilst at the same time enhancing thebenefits of the hexagonal system. The broader implications ofthe organised architecture of plants are emphasised. rhizome, branching pattern, architecture, productivity  相似文献

The galls on Forsythia intermedia Zab. consist of much-branched,root-like structures embedded in corky material which appearsto be sloughed-off from them. These gall ‘roots’have 7 to 14 vascular bundles compared with the 5 of normalroots and contain much more IAA. When galls were incubated in damp chambers the gall ‘roots’extended their growth. These extensions had a root-cap and root-hairsbut also had more vascular bundles than normal and they didnot respond geotropically like normal roots. Two fungi, Gibberella baccata (Wallr.) Sacc. (conid, stat. Fusarlumlateritium Nees.) and Phomopsis dominici Trav. were associatedwith die-back of gall ‘roots’ and two bacteria resemblingCorynebacterium fascians (Til.) Dowson and Agrobacterium tumefaciens(Sm. and Towns.) Conn respectively were isolated from galls. All produced IAA in culture media but their role in the etiologyof the gall, if any, remains in doubt.  相似文献

The seeds of Cuscuta pedicellata have been investigated by transmissionand scanning electron microscopy. Additional observations havebeen made on seeds of C. campestris by SEM only. The seed coatconsists of an outer single epidermis, two different palisadelayers, and an inner multiparenchyma layer. The outer epidermalwall in C. pedicellata has a thick cuticle and zones rich inpectic substances. The thicker ‘U-shaped’ cell wallsin the outer palisade layer are strengthened by a wall layerof hemicellulose. The inner palisade layer has thick walledcells with a ‘light line’. The inner cell wall ofthe compressed multiparenchyma layer has a thin cuticle. A fairlythick cuticle is positioned directly on the endosperm surface. The aleurone cell walls are different from the remaining endospermwalls. The latter are thick and believed to be of galactomannans. There is a ‘clear’ zone between the plasmalemmaand the cell wall in the aleurone cells. The embryo cells arepacked with lipids and proteins. In Cuscuta campestris mostendosperm has been absorbed during the seed development. Theembryo apex has two minute leaf primordia. The features of theCuscuta seeds are discussed in relation to functional and environmentalconditions. This review compares new developmental models on flowering andother vascular plants with evolutionary hypotheses formulatedby Agnes Arber (1879–1960) and like-minded botanists.Special emphasis is laid on philosophical basics such as perspectivism, pluralism about evolutionary modelling, continuum way of thinking, and fuzzy logic. Arber's perspective is best labelled as F uzzyA rberian M orphology (FAM Approach). Its proponents (‘FAMmers’)treat structural categories (e.g. ‘roots’, ‘shoots’,‘stems’, ‘leaves’, ‘stipules’)in vascular plants as concepts with fuzzy borderlines allowingintermediates (including transitional forms, developmental mosaics). The FAM Approach complements Cla ssical Plant M orphology (ClaMApproach), which is the traditional approach in botany. ClaMproponents (‘ClaMmers’) postulate that the structuralcategories of vascular plants are regarded as concepts withclear-cut borderlines and without intermediates. However, duringthe evolution of vascular plants, the root-shoot distinctionand the stem-leaf distinction have become blurred several timesdue to developmental changes, resulting in organs with uniquecombinations of features. This happened, for example, in thebladderworts (Utricularia, Lentibulariaceae). When focusingon the ‘leaf’, the FAM Approach is identical toArber's ‘partial-shoot theory of the leaf’ and Sinha's‘leaf shoot continuum model’. A compound leaf canrepeat the developmental pathway of the whole shoot, at leastto some degree. For example, compound leaves of Chisocheton(Meliaceae)with indeterminate apical growth and three-dimensional branchingmay be seen as developmental mosaics sharing some growth processeswith whole shoots! We focus here on the FAM Approach becausethis perspective is especially promising for developmental geneticistsstudying flowering and other vascular plants. Flowering and vegetative shoots of ‘Shamouti’ orange[Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] and ‘Marsh’ seedlessgrapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf.) were examined for correlationof their morphology and anatomy with fruit set. Fruit set isfavoured on leafy inflorescences whereas abortion is nearlycomplete on leafless inflorescences. Leafless inflorescencesof ‘Shamouti’ with one flower were found to havea very thin stem which contained few vascular bundles, whereasthose with three flowers had better-developed vascular systems. The vascular system of leafy inflorescences is significantlydifferent from that of leafless ones and contains a distinctcentral xylem cylinder. The vascular area of leafless inflorescencesis only about one-quarter of that of the leafy ones. The vascularsystem of grapefruit resembles that of the ‘Shamouti’orange. This study emphasizes the importance of the dimensionof the vascular system for fruit set and provides a possibleexplanation for the better fruit set on both leafy and leaflessinflorescences with several flowers compared with single-floweredinflorescences. The stelar anatomy of Stenochlaena palustris is described. Thestem is dictyostelic and in transverse section shows five orsix closely situated large central meristeles. Around theseare two rings of smaller peripheral bundles. These outer ringsare mainly ‘residual traces’ derived from the leaf-and root-traces. They anastomose freely and are intimately connectedwith the central system. The dictyostely of the latter is due both to leaf-gaps and tomom or lesa random perforations, the latter being the more numerous. The leaf-trace, at first binary, enters the petiole along witha large number of the smaller bundles from the stem periphery.‘Root-traces’ are given off from the base of theleaf-gaps.  相似文献

Cordeauxia edulis (Somalia and Ethiopia), andStuhlmannia moavii(Tanzania, Kenya and Madagascar) are evergreen shrubs or smalltrees of dry areas. They have similar leaf anatomy as revealedby resin sectioning and scanning electron microscopy. The cuticleis extremely thick and all vascular bundles lack bundle sheathextensions. The most unusual feature is the mesophyll, threeto seven layers consisting entirely of cylindrical palisadecells with lateral walls capable of changing vertical lengthby folding in a concertina-like manner. The matching outwardfolds of two adjacent cells always remain attached by meansof a row of wall thickenings (‘pegs’). The pegscan elongate, especially so between the widely separated mesophyllcells that occupy the substomatal chamber area. The unattachedflexible inward wall folds enable these ‘concertina’cells to shorten or lengthen vertically without disrupting cellinterconnections in the interior of each relatively long-livedleaf as it periodically loses and gains water. Concertina cellsmay be an anatomical adaptation allowing these leaves to remainevergreen and survive extended periods of drought and yet tostore water quickly when it becomes available. The contribution of individual vascular bundles of the stemto the flow of assimilates from a selected source leaf to thesink regions was investigated inUrtica dioica L., a plant witha decussate leaf arrangement. Two homologous sets of eight vascularstrands were recognized, arranged in mirror symmetry in thestem internodes. In each set, three of the bundles were identifiedas traces of one leaf merging into the vascular system of thestem one node below the origin of the leaf. The main bundleof a stem-half bifurcates at each end of the internode intotwo subdominant bundles, which combine in the next but one nodeto form the dominant bundle again. Each set of vascular strandsalso contains two minor bundles which pass more or less withoutinterruption through the whole stem. The uppermost mature source leaf (leaf number 5 as counted fromthe tip) was exposed to14CO2in a closed gas circuit. The concentrationof the carbon-labelled CO2was maintained at the ambient CO2levelto maintain the natural source strength of the leaf. By theend of the usual nocturnal dark phase, carbon from the sourceleaf had been imported predominantly by sink leaves of the sameorthostichy. Lesser, but significant amounts of radiocarbonwere also incorporated into the sink leaves of the adjacenttwo orthostichies via the marginal leaf traces. In spite ofthe junction of the vascular strands in the nodes and an interfascicularconnection of the stem bundles, randomization of the photosynthatesfrom individual leaves was minimal in the vascular system ofthe stem in the upward direction, and also low in the flux tothe roots. Substantial amounts of radioactivity were also foundin the lately-formed xylem elements of the vascular strandsand their interfascicular connections, indicating active secondarygrowth. Simulated swards of each of two selection lines of Lolium perennecv. S23 with ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ ratesof ‘mature tissue’ respiration were establishedin growth rooms at 20/15 °C day/night temperatures and studiedover four successive regrowth periods of 46, 30, 26 and 53 daysduration. The ‘slow’ line outyielded the ‘fast’,both in harvestable shoot (above a 5 cm cut) and in root andstubble. Its advantage increased over successive regrowth periodsto 23 per cent (total biomass). Gas analysis measurements onthe entire communities (including roots), during the final regrowthperiod, showed that the ‘slow’ line had a 22–34per cent lower rate of dark respiration per unit dry weight. This enabled it to maintain its greater mass of tissue for thesame cost in terms of CO2 efflux per unit ground area. Halfthe extra dry weight produced by the ‘slow’ line, relative to the ‘fast’, could be attributed to itsmore economic use of carbon. The rest could be traced to a 25per cent greater tiller number which enabled the ‘slow’line to expand leaf area faster (though not at a greater rateper tiller), intercept more light and fix more carbon, earlyin the regrowth period. Silicon accumulation in the endodermis of the ‘set’and ‘shoot’ roots of Saccharum officinarum (L.)were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and electron-probemicroanalysis. Silicon microassay was also carried out by meansof the Corinth analytical microscope (CORA). Aggregates arelargely associated with the inner tangential wall (ITW) of theendodermis and their formation is basically similar to thoseseen in Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. In contrast to Sorghumthe earliest deposits in Saccharum appear in wall strata wellwithin the cell wall cytoplasm interface. An additional layerof silicon was also located along the endodermal pericycle boundaryextending some distance along the middle lamella of the radialwalls. The results are discussed in relation to those of previous studiesof silicon accumulation in endodermal cells and to possiblefactors affecting such accumulations.  相似文献

Diverse Responses of Maple Saplings to Forest Light Regimes   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6
Seedlings of 11 species of forest maples (AcerL.) were grownoutdoors from budburst to senescence under three light regimes:‘gap centre under clear skies’ (approx. 20% opensky irradiance; red:far-red ratio=1.12); ‘gap centre undercloudy skies’ (1.5%, ratio=1.03); and ‘gap edge’(2.5%, ratio=0.6). Seedlings grown under the gap centre (clearsky) regime had significantly greater height growth, greaterspecific leaf mass, higher root:shoot ratio, greater investmentin roots, higher leaf nitrogen concentrations, greater chlorophylla:bratio, lower photosynthetic rates under dim light, higher maximum photosyntheticrate, higher stomatal conductance, and lower leaf internal CO2concentrationscompared with those grown in either gap edge or gap centre (cloudy)regimes. Responses to the gap edgevs.gap centre (cloudy) treatmentsdiffer little, suggesting that shade acclimation in forest mapleseedlings is mainly a response to light intensity rather thanspectral quality. The ubiquitous and, except for leaf internalCO2concentration, highly significant interspecific variationin traits was broad-ranging and continuous. These results suggestthat (1) the responses to light quality found in shade intolerantherbaceous and woody species growing in more open habitats maynot have a selective advantage in seedlings of shade tolerantforest trees, and (2) the adaptive plastic response to understoreyvs.gapenvironments in forest maples, which is qualitatively consistentacross species, is founded on co-ordinated, small shifts insets of functionally inter-related traits.Copyright 1998 Annalsof Botany Company Acer, forest gap heterogeneity, plasticity, specific leaf mass, photosynthesis, leaf chlorophyll, nitrogen, stomatal density, root growth, root:shoot ratio, growth form.  相似文献

The incidence of Fusarium wilt in a given variety of bananais determined by numerous interacting factors such as geneticallydetermined resistance, physical and chemical soil conditions, and abundance of Fusarium oxysporum f. cubense. To attain markedresistance to wilt, ‘Gros Michel’ apparently requiresa combination of conditions; thus the soil must be alkaline,of medium to heavy texture, and rich in available potash. Nitrogenfertilizing tends to increase susceptibility to wilt. Some striking effects of weather on wilt incidence are describedand various aspects of crop management are discussed: soil deteriorationunder bananas undoubtedly contributed to development of wiltin the past. In the earliest stages of rootlet infection, the pathogen growsmore slowly in the resistant ‘Cavendish’ than inthe susceptible ‘Gros Michel’, probably owing tomore effective tissue reactions in the former. In the field, infections progressing along the root are often checked at theroot base: with ‘Gros Michel’, however, a smallproportion enter the rhizome and as a result wilt generallydevelops. Ability to check such infections, leading to recovery,is only exhibited on very fertile soils. The possible mode of action of various factors on wilt incidenceis discussed, and the importance of vigorous root growth inpromoting host resistance is emphasized.  相似文献

An enlargement of the peduncle and rachis of the terminal racemeand the petiole of the uppermost mainstem leaf was observedin soybean plants [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] treated with thecytokinin, 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Histological studies wereperformed to determine the timing and extent of anatomical changesaccompanying BAP treatment. Swelling of treated ‘Tracy-M’peduncles, rachises, and petioles was observed within 4–6d after treatment initiation. A significant increase in totalcross-sectional tissue area was observed at lower and intermediateinternodes of treated rachises after 11 d. Rachis enlargementwas due to increases in both cell size and cell number, particularlyof the vascular tissue. In treated petioles of IX93-100, procambialcells of vascular bundles were the first to respond to the BAPtreatment. These cells differentiated into a vascular cambiumwhich formed secondary xylem and phloem. Soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., anatomy, rachis, BAP.  相似文献

Patterns of distribution of 14C were determined in 47-day-oldtomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) 24 h after theapplication of [14C]sucrose to individual source leaves fromleaves 1–10 (leaf 1 being the first leaf produced abovethe cotyledons). The first inflorescence of these plants wasbetween the ‘buds visible’ and the ‘firstanthesis’ stages of development. The predominant sink organs in these plants were the root system, the stem, the developing first inflorescence and the shoot ‘apex’(all tissues above node 10). The contribution made by individualsource leaves to the assimilate reaching these organs dependedupon the vertical position of the leaf on the main-stem axisand upon its position with respect to the phyllotactic arrangementof the leaves about this axis. The root system received assimilateprincipally from leaf 5 and higher leaves, and the stem apexfrom the four lowest leaves. The developing first inflorescencereceived assimilates mainly from leaves in the two orthostichiesadjacent to the radial position of the inflorescence on thevertical axis of the plant; these included leaves which weremajor contributors of 14C to the root system (leaves 6 and 8)and to the shoot apex (leaves 1 and 3). This pattern of distributionof assimilate may explain why root-restriction treatments andremoval of young leaves at the shoot apex can reduce the extentof flower bud abortion in the first inflorescence under conditionsof reduced photoassimilate availability. Investigations revealed that the anatomy of the primary radicularroot of yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus L.) was typically dicotyledonousexcept that the xylem was not completely developed centripetally. Most of the roots had tetrarch xylem, although a few triarchand pentarch roots were also observed. In both tuberous andnon-tuberous roots, secondary thickening occurred by the formationof the meristematic vascular cambium which formed secondarytissues in a normal fashion. Subsequently, tuberization wasinitiated in the secondary xylem by the development of anomalous‘secondary’ cambia from parenchyma cells surroundingvessel elements. Anomalous ‘secondary’ cambia alsodeveloped from parenchyma cells not associated with vessels.Subsequently, anomalous ‘tertiary’ cambia differentiatedfrom tissues produced by the anomalous ‘secondary’cambia. Activities of these anomalous cambia resulted in theproduction of parenchyma storage cells and were chiefly responsiblefor the growth of the mature tuber. A detailed morphological study of three prairie grass cultivars(Bromus willdenowii Kunth) was conducted under ‘vegetative’and ‘reproductive’ growth conditions (short andlong photoperiods) and at different temperatures. Perennialryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Westerwolds ryegrass (Loliummuhiflorum Lam.) were compared during vegetative growth. Prairie grass had higher leaf appearance rates (leaves per tillerper day) and lower site filling (tillers per tiller per leafappearance interval) than the ryegrass species. Tillering rates(tillers per tiller per day) were also lower, except under vegetativeconditions at 4C. Low tiller number in prairie grass was notdue to lack of tiller sites but a result of poor filling ofthese sites. Lower site filling occurred because of increaseddelays in appearance of the youngest axillary tiller and lackof axillary tillers emerging from basal tiller buds. In prairiegrass, no tillers came from coleoptile buds while only occasionallydid prophyll buds develop tillers. Low tiller number in prairiegrass was compensated for by greater tiller weight. Prairiegrass had more live leaves per tiller, greater area per leafand a high leaf area per plant. Considerable variation between cultivars was found in prairiegrass. The cultivar ‘Bellegarde’ had high leaf appearance, large leaves and rapid reproductive development, but had lowlevels of site filling, tillering rate, final tiller numberand herbage quality during reproductive growth. ‘Primabel’tended to have the opposite levels for these parameters, while‘Grasslands Matua’ was intermediate and possiblyprovided the best balance of all plant parameters. prairie grass, Bromus willdenowii Kunth, perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne L., Westerwolds ryegrass, Lolium multiflorum Lam., temperature, photoperiod, leaf appearance, leaf area, tillering, site filling, tillering sites, yield  相似文献

Complete submergence of rice plants (Oryza sativa L. cv. ‘IR42’)in dilute nutrient solution for 3–6 d almost stopped theaccumulation of dry matter, depressed soluble carbohydrate concentrationby over 75% and promoted chlorosis in fully expanded leaves.Increase in fresh weight by the shoots was not impaired. Extensionby the youngest visible leaf was stimulated. Extension by thenext leaf to appear was retarded by submergence. These growthresponses to submergence were associated with a 1-5-fold increasein the partial pressure of endogenous ethylene (ethene). Applying ethylene (0.3–0.35 Pa) in the gas-phase to non-submergedplants reproduced some, but not all, of these effects of submergence. Thus, greater leaf extension and chlorosis of submerged plantscould be attributable to accumulated ethylene but neither theslow relative growth rate nor the decreased extension of leavesemerging after the start of submergence could be so attributed. Two cultivars (‘FR13A’ and ‘Kurkaruppan’)already known to tolerate submergence, differed little fromsubmergence-intolerant ‘IR42’ in their relativegrowth rate and soluble carbohydrate concentration during submergence. However, their underwater leaf extension was less than in ‘IR42’and chlorosis was much less prevalent, especially in ‘FR13A’.Similarly, ethylene supplied to non-submerged plants was a lesseffective promotor of leaf extension and chlorosis in the twosubmergence tolerant cultivars. Application of 1.0 kPa carbondioxide in the gas-phase prevented the chlorosis response toethylene. The results indicate that accumulated ethylene is a likely causeof fast leaf extension and chlorosis in submergence intolerantforms of rice, particularly when amounts of dissolved carbondioxide are minimal. Cytokinins from leaf laminae, buds, petioles, stems, roots, and root exudate of mature vegetative plants of Xanthium strumariumL. were extracted, fractionated, and partially characterizedby means of column chromatography with Sephadex LH20. Two peaksof cytokinin activity with elution volumes corresponding tozeatin and zeatin riboside were detected, in varying concentrations,in all plant parts. A third cytokinin, detected only in petiolesand in expanding and mature leaves, eluted off the Sephadexcolumn before zeatin riboside. This cytokinin (peak ‘a’)was converted to zeatin or to a zeatin-like cytokinin followingboth acid hydrolysis and treatment with ß-glucosidase.Peak ‘a’ was not detected in buds or in the youngestdeveloping leaves but was the predominant cytokinin presentin half-expanded and more mature leaves. By contrast, the zeatinriboside-like peak (peak ‘b’) constituted the majorcytokinin in root exudate, apical buds, and the youngest developingleaves, while not greatly contributing to the cytokinin contentof mature leaves. The detopped root system was shown to be capable of cytokininproduction. The distribution of cyrtokinins in the plant isdiscussed in relation to their probable origin in the root system.  相似文献

Significant differences in response to soil moisture stress(SMS) and restricted root zone volume (RRZV) were found in twocultivars of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] (‘Forrest’and ‘Williams’) plants grown under controlled-environmentconditions. Leaf water potentials of SMS-treated plants were0·4-0·6 MPa lower than those of controls and stomata1conductances 23-56% lower. In the case of RRZV treatment, however, there were no differences in either parameter. Initiation ofnew leaves as reflected in the plastochron index was stronglyreduced by SMS but was unaffected by RRZV. Photosynthetic rates(CO2 fixation dm2 of leaf) of plants given SMS were reducedby 11-21% while those of RRZV-treated plants were unaffected.SMS caused a strong preferential allocation of dry matter tothe root at the expense of the shoot in both cultivars. RRZV,however, had no effect on assimilate distribution in ‘Forrest’and only slightly favoured root growth in ‘Williams.’Carbohydrate concentrations of both alcohol-soluble and insolublefractions were increased significantly by SMS, especially inthe leaves, but were little affected by RRZV. Nitrogen concentrationin the root fraction was reduced by 22-24% and that in the leafand stem fractions by 7-14% under SMS but was not affected appreciablyby RRZV. Phosphorus concentration in the leaf, stem, and rootfractions was reduced by 45-65% under SMS but was relativelyunaffected by RRZV. These findings suggest that SMS and RRZVare basically different in their mechanism of action and thatthe impairment of growth resulting from these two stresses mayinvolve different physiological processes. Our results alsoindicate that the suppressive effects of small containers onplant growth do not necessarily result from inadvertent SMS. Key words: Drought, Container effects, Glycine max (L.)
