Mechanical perturbation of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) internodes results in reduced elongation and increased diameter of the internodes (thigmomorphogenesis). Perturbation of a single lower internode results in thigmorphogenesis in that internode and all of those internodes above it, the degree of which depends on the age (size) of the internodes and the frequency of perturbation. Application of ethephon to the internodes mimics mechanical perturbation. Early removal of the shoot tip or the cotyledons does not effect thigmomorphogenesis, indicating that those organs do not exert control over the response. Mechanical perturbation of one plant of a pair grafted together at the first internodes results in thigmomorphogenesis in both plants. This indicates the transport of some factor from the mechanically perturbed donor to the non-treated receiver. Evidence is presented to support the contention that ethylene is not this transportable factor.  相似文献

Examination of first internodes of young Phaseolus vulgarisL. plants which have been subjected to mechanical perturbationshows decreased elongation and increased radial growth. Thedecreased elongation can be attributed to both reduced cellelongation of epidermal and cortical cells and a reduced numberof cells in the vascular and pith tissues. The increased radialenlargement is due to increased cortical cell expansion andincreased secondary xylem production resulting from increasedcambial activity. All of these responses are observable withina few hours of a single mechanical perturbation. Treatment ofplants with ethrel mimics all of these effects of mechanicalperturbation. Flowering and vegetative shoots of ‘Shamouti’ orange[Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] and ‘Marsh’ seedlessgrapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf.) were examined for correlationof their morphology and anatomy with fruit set. Fruit set isfavoured on leafy inflorescences whereas abortion is nearlycomplete on leafless inflorescences. Leafless inflorescencesof ‘Shamouti’ with one flower were found to havea very thin stem which contained few vascular bundles, whereasthose with three flowers had better-developed vascular systems.The vascular system of leafy inflorescences is significantlydifferent from that of leafless ones and contains a distinctcentral xylem cylinder. The vascular area of leafless inflorescencesis only about one-quarter of that of the leafy ones. The vascularsystem of grapefruit resembles that of the ‘Shamouti’orange. This study emphasizes the importance of the dimensionof the vascular system for fruit set and provides a possibleexplanation for the better fruit set on both leafy and leaflessinflorescences with several flowers compared with single-floweredinflorescences. Sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) seedlings grown for six months under covers transmitting light of different spectral composition, were compared with others grown under a white cover (control) and outside in full daylight. The intensity of transmitted light was equalized under all covers and attained only 20% of full daylight. Seedlings grown in daylight were shorter, had more internodes, smaller leaves, less chlorophyll and more ascorbic acid than the others. Blue + far-red covers (no transmission between 560–700 nm) enhanced seedling length, the protein and chlorophyll content and peroxidase activity of leaves. When also the wave-range above 700 nm was cut out (blue) seedlings were the shortest, and leaves had very high protein and chlorophyll content, but much less ascorbic acid and lower peroxidase activity. Red + far-red covers (no transmission below 500 nm) enhanced seedling length more than blue + far-red; leaves contained as much protein as control, but had relatively high chlorophyll and peroxidase activity. Ascorbic acid was as low as in blue light.  相似文献
