Effects of time of initial cut and subsequent cutting interval(1, 2 or 4 weeks) were examined in a glasshouse during summer1988 for reproductive plants of three prairie grass cultivars(Bromus willdenowii Kunth), Westerwolds ryegrass (Lolium multiflorumLam.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Measurementswere made of tiller and leaf numbers, sites of tillering, reproductivedevelopment, and herbage quality and yields. Effect of timeof initial cutting on regrowth appeared to be independent ofstage of reproductive development and unrelated to any of themeasured plant parameters. Characteristics for each cultivaras identified during undisturbed growth prior to the initialcuts, were modified by the subsequent cutting frequencies. Perennial ryegrass had the highest yields under frequent cuttingwith high herbage quality. Westenwolds ryegrass and the prairiegrass cultivars ‘Grasslands Matua’ and ‘Primabel’had the highest yields with infrequent cutting, but lower herbagequality than in perennial ryegrass. At each cut, tiller deathin prairie grass was determined by the number of reproductivetillers, and in the ryegrasses also by the numbers of elongatedvegetative tillers. Recovery of tiller numbers was rapid andprimarily from inhibited tiller buds at the base of reproductivetillers. In prairie grass, tiller numbers were relatively unaffectedby cutting frequency, but at frequent cutting, many axillarytillers originated from vegetative tillers rather than frominhibited tiller buds at the base of reproductive tillers. Effects of cutting to 3 or 6 cm stubble height at frequenciesof 1, 2 or 4 weeks were investigated in young, vegetative, spacedplants of prairie grass (Bromus willdenowii Kunth), a tetraploidWesterwolds ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and perennialryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Plants were grown for 8 weekson nutrient solution in a growth cabinet at day/night temperaturesof 15/10°C and in a short photoperiod. Leaf appearance, site filling and tiller numbers were all reduced by both increasedcutting frequency and a lower cutting height. The extent ofthese reductions was least in prairie grass and greatest inWesterwolds ryegrass. Relative growth rates in all species respondedin a similar manner with more frequent cutting and a lower cuttingheight. Cutting frequency had the greatest effect on growthrates, although the effect of cutting height increased withtime. Results confirm general recommendations of long intervalsbetween defoliations to achieve high yields for vegetative prairiegrass, but the relative amounts of dry matter harvested underthe different cutting regimes may be no different to that obtainedin ryegrass. Stubble height was of lesser importance in determiningyields. A typical U-shaped curve for depletion and recovery in water-solublecarbohydrates occurred after defoliation in all species, butlevels remained low at frequent cutting. Water-soluble carbohydratelevels in stubble and roots were higher in prairie grass. Regrowthat the end of the experiment was highly correlated with totalstubble and root weights (r = 0.84), while regrowth per tillershowed a good correlation with water-soluble carbohydrate content, although the response varied between species. In an experiment designed to investigate the rate of leaf appearanceand tiller production in young spaced plants of three clonesof perennial ryegrass grown in the field, it was found thatthe rate of leaf appearance per tiller increased linearly withmean soil temperature up to approx. 14 °C. The rate of productionof tillers in relation to the rate of leaf appearance (sitefilling) appeared to be virtually independent of weather conditions. In plants which were adequately established, but still relativelysmall, site filling was equal to or exceeded the theoreticalsteady state; all the tiller buds which were being formed weredeveloping into visible tillers. Thus the relative rate of tillerproduction was controlled by the rate of leaf appearance. Inlarger plants site filling was less complete, and site redundancieswere probably caused by within-plant competition for light atthe tiller bases. Lolium multiflorum Lam, plants were grown in a growth room undertwo light sources with red/far-red ratios of 1·62 and0·84 but similar photosynthetically active radiation. In both situations the capacity to produce new tillers and thelight available per tiller decreased with canopy growth. Tilleringwas further reduced by the low red/far-red ratio while lightinterception and plant dry weight were unaffected by this treatment. In both reproductive and vegetative plants under the lower red/far-redratio the time between leaf expansion and the appearance ofa tiller in its axil was increased and the proportion of ‘maturebuds’ that developed was reduced. Irradiation with lowred/far-red advanced the reproductive development and increasedthe number of fertile tillers per plant. It also caused longerleaf sheaths, blades and reproductive shoots. The results suggestthat as canopy density increases the lower light interceptionper tiller and the photomorphogenic effect of low red/far-redratios may reduce the capacity to produce new tillers. A detailed morphological examination of the tillering characteristicsof perennial ryegrass (Loltum perenne L.) is presented. It isshown that the tillering potential of perennial ryegrass interms of site filling is 0–693 tillers/tiller/leaf appearanceinterval. This is higher than earlier presented values and isdue to the tillering ability of the prophyll bud which has notpreviously been taken into account. In a controlled climateroom experiment with spaced plants of perennial ryegrass, meanvalues of site filling were found to be close to this theoreticalmaximum Due to growth-limiting factors, tiller formation from leaf axillarybuds can be delayed or suppressed entirely. A set of equationsis presented from which site filling and the ratio of new leavesto new tillers can be calculated for all situations of axillarybud activity. It is stressed that leaf appearance rate can onlybe determined by marking and counting leaves on single tillersat consecutive dates Loltum perenne (L.), perennial ryegrass, tillering, axillary bud, leaf appearance rate, prophyll, site filling  相似文献

Tillering and growth parameters of perennial ryegrass cultivarsWendy (diploid) and Condesa (tetraploid) were determined ina glasshouse experiment using hydroponics at low (–1·3MPa) and normal water potential (0 MPa). At –1·3MPa, leaf extension rate was reduced by 36%. Final plant tillernumber was 20% lower at –1·3 MPa because of a 12%reduction in the leaf appearance rate in the first weeks afterthe start of the treatments. Site filling, the relative increasein tiller number per leaf appearance interval, was high (0.61)-butstill lower than theoretically possible-and was only slightlyaffected by water potential. Site filling was shown to be strictlyrelated to the number of inhibited plus unemerged tiller buds.Dry matter production was 64% lower at –1·3 MPa.Relative growth rate (RGR) was, on average, 17% lower at –1·3MPa, but the reduction was greater just after the treatmentsstarted. Also, net assimilation rate (NAR) was reduced moreby low water potential just after the start of the treatments.Specific leaf area (SLA) was 13 % lower at –1·3MPa for Wendy, but not significantly reduced for Condesa. Contraryto expectations based on the theory of the functional balancebetween root and shoot, leaf weight ratio was slightly higherat –1·3 MPa. From comparison of the results ofthis study with published data, it is concluded that effectsof drought in the field on tillering cannot be attributed onlyto low water potential. Young plants of two selection lines of Lolium perenne cv. S23with ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ rates of ‘maturetissue’ respiration were individually grown from seed, together with plants of S23, their common parent, in 9.2 cmpots in a controlled environment at 20/15 °C day/night temperatures. No significant differences were found between the genotypesin leaf extension and tiller production during this early stageof their growth. They did differ however, by an average of 26%,in the rate of dark respiration of fully expanded leaf laminae. The use of a simple model demonstrated that such a differencein respiration could alone account for the different rates ofdry matter production shown by the selection lines when grownas young crops from seed. Possible penalties of ‘slow’respiration are also considered. Simulated swards of each of two selection lines of Lolium perennecv. S23 with ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ ratesof ‘mature tissue’ respiration were establishedin growth rooms at 20/15 °C day/night temperatures and studiedover four successive regrowth periods of 46, 30, 26 and 53 daysduration. The ‘slow’ line outyielded the ‘fast’,both in harvestable shoot (above a 5 cm cut) and in root andstubble. Its advantage increased over successive regrowth periodsto 23 per cent (total biomass). Gas analysis measurements onthe entire communities (including roots), during the final regrowthperiod, showed that the ‘slow’ line had a 22–34per cent lower rate of dark respiration per unit dry weight. This enabled it to maintain its greater mass of tissue for thesame cost in terms of CO2 efflux per unit ground area. Halfthe extra dry weight produced by the ‘slow’ line, relative to the ‘fast’, could be attributed to itsmore economic use of carbon. The rest could be traced to a 25per cent greater tiller number which enabled the ‘slow’line to expand leaf area faster (though not at a greater rateper tiller), intercept more light and fix more carbon, earlyin the regrowth period. Tillering responses to the light environment and to defoliationwere studied in two populations of perennial ryegrass (LoliumperenneL.) selected for contrasting leaf lengths. The objectiveof this study was to determine whether differences in tilleringresponses between populations, as a result of management practices, affected their competitive ability. Young seedlings were exposed, under controlled conditions, to defoliation, neutral shading(decreased photosynthetic photon flux), low red:far-red ratioand/or decreased blue light. Selection for longer leaves reducedthe tillering rate. After defoliation, this difference betweenshort- and long-leaved populations was magnified. Defoliationdecreased both site filling and phyllochron of the long-leavedpopulation but had no effect on the short-leaved population.Lowering the photosynthetic photon flux reduced the phyllochronin both population. Decreasing the red:far-red ratio reducedtillering rate by reducing site filling, whereas decreasingblue light had no significant effects on tillering. Tilleringresponses to photosynthetic photon flux and to red:far-red ratiowere similar in the two populations selected for contrastingleaf length. The implication of these tillering responses indefining the competitive ability of the grass plants is discussedin relation to their management.Copyright 1999 Annals of BotanyCompany Blue light, defoliation, far-red, irradiance, leaf size,Lolium perenne(L.), perennial ryegrass, photomorphogenesis, phyllochron, shading, site filling, tiller production.  相似文献

The adverse effect of lodging on grass seed yield may be attributed,in part, to assimilate limitation during the seed filling period. This investigation examined plant dry matter assimilate partitioningand seed yield as affected by lodging in three species thatare closely related but phenotypically different: tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea Schreber.), Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorumLam.), and perennial ryegrass (L. perenne L.). Studies wereperformed in field plots at Corvallis, Oregon, USA. Seed yieldcomponents (seed number per inflorescence, seed yield per inflorescence, and single seed mass) and leaf, stem (lower, middle, and peduncle)and seed inflorescence dry mass were measured just prior toanthesis to seed maturity. Dry mass and water soluble carbohydrates(WSC) were determined for shoot components. The reduction indry mass and WSC in leaves and stem components following anthesiswas often greater in lodged plants compared to upright plants. The relatively low seed yield depression in lodged tall fescuesuggested a higher compensation potential for partitioning reserveassimilate from leaves and stems to support seed growth anddevelopment. This potential does not appear to be present tothe same degree in Italian ryegrass and to an even lesser extentin perennial ryegrass. These findings suggest that the potentialto compensate for reduced assimilate supply during the periodof high assimilate demand by seeds may be attributed, in part,to the total assimilate reserve accumulated prior to photoassimilatereduction caused by the lodged condition. Two lines of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) that had previouslybeen selected for ‘fast’ and ‘slow’rates of leaf dark respiration were examined to determine whetherselection had differentiated allelic or genotypic frequenciesof five polymorphic enzyme loci, and determine whether respirationrates differed among genotypes. The lines were differentiatedfor genes coding for phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) and UDP-glucosepyrophosphorylase (UDP). Respiration rates were heterogeneousamong UDP and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD) genotypes.Founder effects may have produced the genetic differentiationof lines at the PGI locus as we detected no differences amonggenotypes for respiration rates. The genetic differentiationamong lines for UDP was consistent with differences in darkrespiration among genotypes. Although we detected large differences(75%) in dark respiration rate among 6PGD genotypes in the fastrespiring line, selection did not differentiate the lines atthis locus. To clarify whether new vegetative tillers that develop aroundanthesis in aLolium perenne seed crop can depress seed yields, the possible competition for carbohydrates or nitrogen betweenthe seeds and new tillers that develop after the onset of anthesiswas investigated. In two greenhouse experiments the number oftillers per plant was varied by a combination of cutting, nitrogensupply, light quality and light intensity treatments. Two genotypeswith different tillering rates were used. Seed yield per earwas largely independent of the number of tillers and regrowthof cut tillers after the onset of anthesis. It increased inone genotype, but only under low light and a reduced nutrientavailability, and no new tillers were produced. The amount ofwater-soluble carbohydrates in the reproductive tillers increasedin both clones under these conditions. Under more favourableconditions the increased tillering rate and regrowth of tillersafter cutting did not adversely affect seed yield per ear ineither clone, although carbohydrate reserves in the floweringtillers were sharply reduced. Tiller removal increased the concentrationand amount of nitrogen in the remaining flowering tillers, irrespectiveof the amount of regrowth. It is concluded that competitionfor carbohydrates or nitrogen between the seeds and new vegetativetillers that develop after the onset of anthesis, is not a majorcause of the low and variable seed yields inL. perenne seedcrops. Processes within the ear itself are probably limiting. Lolium perenne L.; perennial ryegrass; seed yield; seed set; tillering; carbohydrates; nitrogen; competition.  相似文献

In recent literature on Gramineae species, leaf and tiller numberdynamics have been studied by analysing site filling and thephyllochron of the mainstem. However, site filling is influencedby three components: (1) the phyllochron of the mainstem anddaughter tillers; (2) specific site usage (i.e. fraction ofbuds that ultimately develop into a visible tiller at a specificsite); and (3) HS-delay (i.e. difference in Haun Stage (HS)between the parent tiller and daughter tiller above the pointwhere the daughter tiller appears). These three morphologicalcomponents affecting site filling were studied under differentenvironmental conditions in a growth chamber experiment withspring and winter wheat (Triticum aestivumL.). Treatments weretemperature (daily average 10.5, 15.5 or 20.5 °C) and lightintensity (111, 191 or 286 µmol m-2s-1). Effects of temperatureand light intensity on phyllochron were well described by equationsalready reported in the literature. Specific site usage washigher at cooler temperatures and greater light intensitiesand was related to tiller position. It is proposed that theseeffects on specific site usage reflect differences in availabilityof local assimilate for tiller appearance. HS-delay of a tillerwas shorter if the expected tiller appearance was later andwas only slightly affected by light intensity or temperature. This new concept, combining HS-delay and specific site usage, can be useful in constructing more general models of the effectsof environmental factors on the dynamics of leaf number andleaf area ofGramineaespecies.Copyright 1998 Annals of BotanyCompany Triticum aestivum; wheat; phyllochron; temperature; light intensity; leaf number; tillering; site filling; site usage.  相似文献

The flowering requirements of six European varieties of Loliumperenne L. were studied in controlled environments. In experimentson primary induction, flowering was recorded after transferto long days (LD) in a greenhouse at 12–24°C. In experimentson secondary induction, primary induction was first accomplishedat 6°C/10 h daylength for 12 weeks. When evaluated by the50% heading criterion, the requirement for duration of primaryinduction at 6°C/8 h daylength was <3 weeks in Mediterranean,5–6 weeks in Central European and 7–8 weeks in Scandinavianvarieties. While ‘Veyo’ (Italy) flowered profuselyregardless of temperature or daylength during primary induction, critical temperatures for primary induction in SD and LD were15 and 11°C in ‘Baca’ (Czech Republic) and 11and 7°C in ‘Falster’ (Denmark). The criticalphotoperiod for secondary induction at 15°C ranged from12 h in ‘Veyo’ and 14 h in ‘Baca’ to16.5 h in ‘Falster’ and 17.5 in ‘Kleppe’(Norway). The critical number of LD cycles varied correspondingly. While the Central and North European varieties required fewerLD cycles for 50% heading at 18 than at 12°C, ‘Veyo’showed the opposite response. It is concluded that the requirementsfor both primary and secondary induction of Lolium perenne increasewith increasing latitude of origin of the germplasm. In oneexperiment, 39–87% of the inflorescences came from tillersthat were not visible on transfer from primary to secondaryinduction, thus it is also concluded that there is no juvenilestage in tillers of Lolium perenne. Tiller appearance in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.)occurs in an orderly, predictable manner with the potentialfor a high degree of synchronization among tillers on a givenplant. Estimates of potential cumulative tiller production (Tmax)are made for synchronous (Tmaxlx = 2Lx+1 – 1, where Lxis the axil number of the youngest leaf on the main stem whichbears an emerged tiller) and non-synchronous (Tmax1 = 2L–NLAT–1,where L is the number of leaves on the main stem and NLAT thenumber of leaves above the youngest primary tiller at its appearance)conditions. A method for determining the degree of synchronizationand an equation for estimating site usage are also presented.Early in seedling development, site usage of a tall fescue populationwith high tillering capacity was near 90%, and tillering wasregulated largely by rate of tiller site formation. As the canopydeveloped the phyllochron (time between successive leaf appearances)and NLAT increased, slowing the rate of tiller production intemporal terms and in relation to leaf appearance, respectively.Beyond 45 d after planting, site usage decreased rapidly, furtherreducing tiller production. High tiller production appearedto be associated with synchronized tiller appearance, with alack of synchrony being associated with decreased site usage.Tillers formed in prophyll axils were less likely to be in synchronywith other tillers and frequently failed to appear. In contrastwith branching in dicotyledons, apical dominance appears toplay a minor role in regulating tillering in tall fescue Tillerproduction initially appears to proceed at near maximum ratesthen is down-regulated during later development by longer phyllochrons, slower rate of tiller elongation and reduced site usage. The partition of 14C labelled current assimilates to root insimulated swards of Lolium perenne cv. S24 was measured duringthe transition from vegetative growth in autumn to reproductivegrowth in spring under close to natural conditions of lightand temperature. Assimilate partitioning was also measured in‘established’ swards cut three times during thegrowing season and in vegetative ‘seedling’ swardsgrowing in autumn and in spring. All measurements were madewhen the swards had achieved more than 90 per cent light interception, and all swards were abundantly supplied with water and mineralnutrients. During autumn there was a gradual decrease in the proportionof assimilates partitioned to the roots in both the ‘established’and the ‘seedling’ swards. In the established swards, partition to roots was low over winter, increased during earlyspring, but decreased dramatically, later in the spring, whenstem elongation began. In contrast, in the unvernalized vegatativeseedling swards in spring, partition to roots remained high. The seasonal pattern of assimilate partitioning is consideredin relation to changes in the natural environment and the rateat which the crop fixed carbon in photosynthesis. A decreasein the proportion of assimilates partitioned to roots duringlate spring was significant in increasing the production ofshoot at that time but seasonal differences in partition contributedvery little to the marked differences in shoot growth betweenthe spring and autumn crop. Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.). perennial ryegrass (Loliumperenne L.) and Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum Lam.) plantswere grown on deep (75–95 cm) columns of soil in glasshousesand growth rooms with and without irrigation. The species inwhich growth declined least rapidly after water had been withheldwere those which transpired most slowly. During early establishmentin the glasshouse cocksfoot transpired least because of slowroot growth. In the growth room, when root systems were deeperand denser, perennial ryegrass transpired least because of lowleaf water conductance. Results are discussed in relation to(a) drought resistance in the three species; (b) breeding forincreased drought resistance through modifying root distributionand leaf water conductance; and (c) the use of isolated soilcolumns in water relations studies. Measurements of leaf water conductance (LWC) were made in agrowth room on plants previously selected for either high orlow LWC as seedlings from two Lolium perenne L. populations.Differences in LWC were maintained between selection groupswhen measured as older plants, but there were considerable changesin LWC of individual selection groups on remeasurement. TheLWCs and the rankings of LWCs of individual genotypes were correlatedbetween experiments, thus demonstrating that selection of genotypeswas worthwhile. Thus the possibility of including LWC in selectionprogrammes was established. Investigations conducted to optimize sampling for LWC are described. It was concluded that little further reduction in the standarderror of LWC measurements was obtained by making more than eightmeasurements per genotype, and it was important to sample onat least four tillers. A new measure for the phenotypic stabilityof a selection group is proposed, named realized ‘selectivity’.The realized selectivity can be used to estimate the upper valuefor realized heritability and is about 0.5 for LWC in L. perenne. The values of phenotypic repeatability of LWC are compared withother similar measurements.
