Food consumption, number of movements and feeding hierarchy of juvenile transgenic common carp Cyprinus carpio and their size-matched non-transgenic conspecifics were measured under conditions of limited food supply. Transgenic fish exhibited 73·3% more movements as well as a higher feeding order, and consumed 1·86 times as many food pellets as their non-transgenic counterparts. After the 10 day experiment, transgenic C. carpio had still not realized their higher growth potential, which may be partly explained by the higher frequency of movements of transgenics and the 'sneaky' feeding strategy used by the non-transgenics. The results indicate that these transgenic fish possess an elevated ability to compete for limited food resources, which could be advantageous after an escape into the wild. It may be that other factors in the natural environment ( i.e. predation risk and food distribution), however, would offset this advantage. Thus, these results need to be assessed with caution.  相似文献

The feeding habits and habitats of the speckled worm eel Myrophis punctatus were studied on the mangrove edge of the Indian River Lagoon (IRL, Florida) using gut-content and stable-isotope analyses of carbon (δ(13) C) and nitrogen (δ(15) N). Four taxa were identified through analyses of gut contents, and the index of relative importance suggested that amphipods, microphytobenthos and annelids are the most important food sources in the fish's diet. To assess the feeding habits of the fish after their recruitment to the IRL, these food sources were collected from mangroves and nearby seagrass beds for isotope analyses. Stable isotopes constituted a powerful tool for discriminating fish prey items from mangroves (mean ± s.d.δ(13) C = -20·5 ± 0·6‰) and those from seagrass beds (mean ± s.d.δ(13) C = -16·9 ± 0·6‰), thus providing good evidence of food source origins. The 56 M. punctatus collected [10·0 < total length (L(T) ) < 16·2 cm] had average isotopic signatures of δ(13) C = -16·7 ± 0·2‰ and δ(15) N = 8·2 ± 0·1‰. A significant depletion in (13) C was observed for larger juveniles (15·0 < L(T) < 16·2 cm), suggesting that they found a portion of their food in mangroves. Estimation of the trophic level from stable isotopes (T(Liso)) was similar among different size groups of juvenile fish (T(Liso) = 3·2-3·5); therefore, M. punctatus was considered a secondary consumer, which is consistent with its zoobenthic diet. The concentration-dependent mixing Stable Isotope Analysis in R (SIAR) model revealed the importance of food sources from seagrass beds as carbon sources for all the fish collected, with a significant increase in mangrove prey contributions, such as annelids, in the diet of larger juveniles. This study highlights the importance of seagrass beds as feeding habitats for juveniles of M. punctatus after their recruitment to coastal waters.  相似文献

Direct observations of spawning events of large free-swimming migratory fish are difficult in nature. However, behavioural changes specific to spawning events of fish species, i.e. swimming depth or acceleration of body motion using data loggers attached to the body, have successfully been used to identify spawning. In this study, we observed the spawning behaviour in an experimental tank of a pair of greater amberjack Seriola dumerili, which were matured by injection of gonadotropin, by attaching an acceleration data logger, an accelerometer. The male and female were observed to vibrate their bodies during the moment of spawning. Analysis of the acceleration data showed the simultaneous appearance of a dominant cycle (cycle indicating the highest amplitude in 1?s) under 0.4?s continuing over 7?sand dominant amplitude over 0.4 indicating the time of the spawning in both sexes. These characteristics are useful for the development of an algorithm to detect the spawning behaviour, allowing us to develop a new data logger with an on-board algorithm for detection of spawning behaviour. Before development of this system, we need to develop new algorithms for separation of spawning behaviour from other similar large motion behaviours, particularly from feeding and prey avoidance behaviour.  相似文献

Sixteen cod,Gadus morhua (L.), were individually fed a single ration of shrimps,Crangon allmanni. Four fish were killed and examined 6, 12, 24 and 48 h after the fish had been fed. Chitinase activities were measured in the extracts of stomach contents, stomach tissue, pyloric caecae, intestinal contents and intestinal tissue. The level of enzyme activity in different parts of the digestive tract was shown to be dependent on the phase of the digestive process. High concentrations of the chitin degradation product N-acetyl-D-glucosamine were determined in the stomach and in the intestinal contents. Based on the chitin concentration in the food organisms and the individual food uptake, the amount of chitin consumed by each fish could be calculated. Only up to 9% of the ingested chitin was recovered from the intestinal contents of the fish at any given time after feeding (6, 12, 24 and 48 h). In addition, only 2.4% of the chitin consumed with the food could be recovered in the collected faeces of the fish. The 4 cod killed 48 h after feeding had completely emptied their stomach. Chitin digestion in these fish was calculated to have been 90%.  相似文献

This study measured the effects of regular and irregular intervals between feeds on the growth performance of juvenile Gasterosteus aculeatus . The experimental period was 21 days at 14) C and photoperiod of 10L: 14D. The fish were housed individually. The control fish received a constant ration every day. Fish on a constant interval were fed on days 1, 5, 9, 13, 17 and 21. Fish on a random regime were fed with the same average interval between feedings, but the interval varied randomly between 1 and 5 days. The rations were calculated so that over the 21-day period, all fish were supplied with the same total quantity of food. The two ration levels were: 2% (maintenance ration) and 6% of the initial body weight per day. At a given ration, the feeding interval had no significant effect on specific growth rate, RNA/DNA ratio and lipid contents. The percentage dry matter was slightly, but significantly lower in treatment groups than in the control group. Groups receiving a mean 2% ratio consumed all the food supplied. At a mean ration of 6%, the control group ate 100%, the regular interval group 95·4% and the irregular interval 98·3% of the total food supplied. For the temporal patterns of feeding used, the fish were able to adjust their food intake, when food become available, to compensate for short periods of food deprivation and maintain their growth performance except for a decrease in dry matter content.  相似文献

Young individuals of the bottom-biting (i.e. sediment-ingesting) common carp Cyprinus carpio and gudgeon Gobio gobio consumed significant amounts of nematodes in laboratory experiments, whereas the selective-feeding roach Rutilus rutilus did not. In mesocosm enclosure experiments in the field, C. carpio strongly decreased the nematode abundance within 4 days, whereas the bottom-biting bream Abramis brama did not affect the abundance until after 14 days. In controlled experiments with a known number of prey, C. carpio but not A. brama significantly reduced the number of nematodes, and G. gobio reduced the nematode abundance dependent on the size of the fish, with smaller fish causing a greater reduction. Cyprinus carpio consumed the nematodes and did not just mechanically kill them in the sediment, as shown by dissection of the fish intestine. Morphometric analysis of the branchial baskets indicated that the mesh width of C. carpio, but not of A. brama, is suitable for consuming meiobenthos. The results indicate that the meiobenthos is a food resource for certain bottom-feeding freshwater fishes.  相似文献

The morphological development of larval cobia Rachycentron canadum from 3 days post hatch (dph) until weaning (27 dph) was examined using S.E.M. Two groups of fish were studied: a control group (CF), reared under standard feeding protocol, and a group in which prey items were enriched with supplemental taurine (4 g l(-1) day(-1) ; TF). TF fish grew faster (P < 0·001), attained greater size (mean ±s.e. 55·1 ± 1·5 v. 33·9 ± 1·0 mm total length) and had better survival (mean ±s.e. 29·3 ± 0·4 v. 7·1 ± 1·2 %) than CF fish. Canonical variance analysis confirmed findings with respect to differences in growth between the treatment groups with separation being explained by two cranial measurements. S.E.M. revealed that 3 dph larvae of R. canadum (in both groups) possess preopercular spines, superficial neuromasts on the head and body, taste buds in the mouth, an olfactory epithelium which takes the form of simple concave depressions, and primordial gill arches. Gill filaments start to form as early as 6 dph and lamellae buds are visible at 8 dph in both groups. In CF fish, the cephalic lateral line system continues its development at 12-14 dph with invagination of both supra- and infraorbital canals. At the same time, a thorn-like or acanthoid crest forms above the eye. At 14 dph, invaginations of the mandibular and preopercular canals are visible and around 22 dph enclosure of all cranial canals nears completion. In CF larvae, however, completely enclosed cranial canals were not observed within the course of the trial, i.e. 27 dph. In TF larvae, grooves of the cephalic lateral line system form 4 days earlier than observed in CF larvae of R. canadum (i.e. at 8 dph), with enclosure commencing at 16 dph, and completed by 27 dph. Along the flanks of 6 dph larvae of either treatment, four to five equally spaced neuromasts delineate the future position of the trunk lateral line. As myomeres are added to the growing larvae, new neuromasts appear such that at 16 dph a neuromast is associated with each myomere. By 27 dph, the trunk lateral line starts to invaginate in CF larvae, while it initiates closure in TF larvae. These findings elucidate important features of the larval development of R. canadum and show that dietary taurine supplementation benefits larval development, growth and survival in this species. Moreover, they suggest a conditional requirement for taurine in larval R. canadum.  相似文献

After a pre-prandial period of starvation or feeding with unlabelled food, 0+ salmon parr (0.8–11.7 g) were fed a test meal of iron particle labelled food and subsequently were again either starved or fed unlabelled food. The quantity of labelled food consumed and the evacuation rate was determined by serial radiographs. In fish of all sizes, pre-prandial starvation causes a larger test meal (as a percentage of body weight) to be consumed when compared to pre-prandially fed fish. In addition, pre-prandial starvation results in relatively larger meals as a percentage of body weight being taken by smaller compared to larger fish. This result was not evident for pre-prandially fed fish. Evacuation rate was unrelated to body size irrespective of feeding history. Post-prandial starvation decreased evacuation rate but this effect was inversely related to the quantity of food consumed. Larger meals were not evacuated differently from smaller meals if feeding occurred post-prandially, irrespective of pre-prandial starvation.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine the effect of the changes in gill morphology induced by dietary salt feeding on several aspects of gill function in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss maintained in fresh water with specific emphasis on Cl(-) uptake (J(IN)Cl(-)) and acid-base regulation. The addition of 11% NaCl to the diet caused J(IN)Cl(-) to be reduced by c. 45% from 214·4 ± 26·7 to 117·3 ± 17·4 μmol kg(-1) h(-1) (mean ± s.e.). Rates of Cl(-) efflux (J(OUT)Cl(-)), net Cl(-) flux (J(NET)Cl(-)), J(NET) Na(+) and plasma levels of Na(+) or Cl(-) were unaffected by salt feeding. On the basis of significant effect of the salt diet on decreasing the maximal uptake rate of Cl(-)(J(MAX)Cl(-)), it would appear that internal salt loading caused a decrease in the number of functional ion transport proteins involved in Cl(-) uptake (e.g. Cl(-) -HCO(3)(-) exchangers) and decreased the transporting capacity of existing proteins. The acid-base regulating capacity of control fish and salt-loaded fish was assessed by monitoring arterial blood acid-base status [partial pressure of CO(2) (PCO(2)), pH and HCO(3)(-)] during exposure to external hypercapnia (nominally 7·5 mm Hg). Both groups of fish exhibited typical compensatory responses to sustained hypercapnia consisting of the gradual accumulation of plasma HCO(3) (-) and thus metabolic restoration within 24 h of the initial respiratory acidosis elicited by hypercapnia. Overall, the results demonstrate that while Cl(-) uptake capacity is reduced in salt-fed fish, there is no associated alteration in acid-base regulating capability.  相似文献

The mean ±s.e. optimum temperature (T(opt)) for aerobic scope in juvenile coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch was determined to be 17·0 ± 0·7° C. The repeated measures protocol took 3 weeks to complete the T(opt) determination using 12 fish tested at five temperatures separated by 2° C increments. This experiment also demonstrated that the T(opt) was associated with maximum heart rate (f(H)) failing to maintain a Q(10) -related increase with temperature. When maximum f(H) was produced in anaesthetized fish with pharmacological stimulation and f(H) measured from electrocardiogram recordings during acute warming, the Arrhenius break temperature (ABT) for Q(10) discontinuities in maximum f(H) (mean ±s.e. = 17·1 ± 0·5° C for 15 ppm clove oil and 16·5 ± 0·2° C for 50 ppm MS-222) was statistically indistinguishable from the T(opt) measured using aerobic scope. Such a determination took only 3 days rather than 3 weeks. Therefore, it is proposed that determining ABT for discontinuities in maximum f(H) in anaesthetized fish presents itself as a valuable, high-throughput screening tool to assess T(opt) in fishes, a metric that has become recognized as being extremely valuable in fish biology and fisheries management.  相似文献

在室内条件(温度(26±1)℃,相对湿度80%,光周期12L∶12D)下研究了天仙果(Ficus erecta Thunb.var.beecheyana(Hook.et Arn.)King)、大青(Clerodendrum cyrtophyllum Turcz)、华东油柿(Diospyros oleiera Cheng)、喜树(Camptotheca acuminate Decne)和杨梅(Myrica rubra(Lour.)Sieb.et Zucc)5种不同科的寄主植物对三条橙灯蛾Lemyra alikangensis(Strand)取食偏好、生长发育、繁殖及营养效应的影响。结果表明,三条橙灯蛾对不同寄主植物表现出明显的取食选择差异;不同寄主植物对三条橙灯蛾的幼虫发育历期、累计存活率、产卵量及营养效应等指标均有显著影响。三条橙灯蛾4龄幼虫偏好取食大青,对杨梅和喜树的选择率很低。幼虫历期以大青饲喂组最短为(39.20±1.79)d,杨梅饲喂组最长为(48.25±2.22)d;累计存活率以大青饲喂组最高(45.71%),杨梅饲喂组最低(28.57%);大青饲喂组产卵量最多为(553.75±61.69)粒/雌,杨梅饲喂组最少为(386.25±51.05)粒/雌。大青饲喂组三条橙灯蛾的相对生长率(0.30±0.03)mg·mg-1·d-1、食物利用率(13.46±1.84)%、近似消化率(62.04±6.29)%在各组中均最高,但食物转化率(21.65±0.95)%很低;杨梅饲喂组三条橙灯蛾的相对生长率(0.12±0.03)mg·mg-1·d-1、近似消化率(14.75±1.48)%很低,但是食物利用率(5.41±0.61)%较高,食物转化率(36.79±4.07)%最高。综合各指标认为:在5种供试植物中大青是三条橙灯蛾的最适寄主植物,杨梅则最不利于其生长发育和种群繁衍。  相似文献

Compensatory growth is a phase of accelerated growth apparent when favourable conditions are restored after a period of growth depression. To investigate if F2 common 'all-fish' growth hormone gene transgenic common carp ( Cyprinus carpio ) could mount compensatory growth, a 9 week study at 29° C was performed. The control group was fed to satiation twice a day throughout the experiment. The other two groups were deprived of feed for 1 or 2 weeks, respectively, and then fed to satiation during the re-feeding period. At the end of the experiment, the live masses of fish in the deprived groups were still significantly lower than those of the controls. During the re-feeding period, size-adjusted mean specific growth rates and mean feed intakes were significantly higher in the deprived fish than in the controls, indicating a partial compensatory growth response in these fish. No significant differences were found in food conversion efficiency between the deprived and control fish during re-feeding, suggesting that hyperphagia was the mechanism responsible for increased growth rates. The proximate composition of the deprived fish at the end of the experiment was similar to that of the control fish. This study is, to our knowledge, the first to report that fast-growing transgenic fish can achieve partial compensation of growth following starvation.  相似文献

The feeding ecology ofChrysichthys, a commercially important freshwater bagrid in Nigeria, is described from a southeastern lake. Over a year period, 779 stomachs were examined. The main food items were chaoborid and chironomid larvae, ostracods, copepods and detritus. Larger fish fed mostly on insect larvae and detritus while the smaller individuals consumed mostly microcrustacea. Feeding intensity was lowest during the height of the flood. There was little diel change in the amount of food consumed. The fish are morphologically pre-adapted for their benthic omnivorous feeding habits.  相似文献

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding a tropical earthworm meal (Perionyx escavatus) on the haemato-immunological response and growth performance of mirror carp (Cyprinus carpio). Fish were fed diets for a total of 88 days, fishmeal served as the main protein source in the control diet. Two remaining diets consisted of fishmeal fixed at 33.65% provision of protein and the remaining 66.35% protein was provided by soybean meal (SBM diet) or P. excavatus meal (EW diet). Compared to control and SBM fed fish (7.69 ± 0.28 and 5.92 ± 0.31 g/dl, respectively), a significant increase in haemoglobin was measured in EW fed fish (9.57 ± 0.24 g/dl). Consequently significant elevations were also observed in mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH; 79.13 ± 4.59 pg) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC; 22.69 ± 0.54 pg) in EW fed fish. On the contrary, compared to control and SBM fed carp total leukocyte levels (2.72 ± 0.17 and 3.10 ± 0.17 × 10(4)/mm(3), respectively) were significantly decreased in the EW group (2.15 ± 0.14 × 10(4)/mm(3)). Moreover at day 14 and 21 post immunisation with bacterin isolated from Aeromonas hydrophila fish fed the EW diet displayed a significant reduction in respiratory burst activity (RBA) compared to control and SBM fed fish. After 60 days of feeding, fish fed EW diet showed a significant elevation in final body weight compared to fish fed a fishmeal based diet (control treatment) and fish fed a soybean meal based diet. Similar improvements were observed in feed utilisation efficiency. The present study shows that feeding P. excavatus meal to mirror carp decreases some aspects of the innate immune response, but at the same time gives rise to significant enhancement of growth and feed utilisation efficiency.  相似文献

Two acceleration data loggers, each measuring surging and heaving acceleration, were attached to the head and mandible of three captive hooded seals, Cystophora cristata, for detection of underwater feeding events. Three sizes of prey: Atlantic herring (large), capelin (medium), and half a capelin (small) were tested. A highpass frequency-filtering method at 3 Hz provided more distinct prey ingestion signals for both head and mandible acceleration. The surge-axis signals from head acceleration suggested that the seals ingested their prey not only by biting, but also by thrusting. Moreover, prey ingestion movements showed higher surging acceleration from mandible than from head (mean ± SD from head: 5.37 ± 4.45 m s−2, from mandible: 8.43 ± 5.15 m s−2, n = 153), indicating that the data from the head is not required for precise identification of feeding events. Thus, our mandible acceleration device provides a practical method for the timing of underwater feeding events in seals.  相似文献

Three groups of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss , (initial weight 40 g) were fed one of three rations (low, medium or high) for 73 days. Consumption by individual fish within the three ration groups was measured on four occasions (days 27, 55, 64 and 72) using radiography. Food intake by individual fish varied between days and this variability was expressed using the coefficient of variation (CV). Dominant fish within each ration group were defined as individuals with the greater share of the group meal and these fish had low CVs for food intake indicating relatively little variation in daily consumption. By contrast, the fish which had consumed a low mean proportion of the group meal displayed high CVs for food intake, indicating considerable variability in the sizes of individual meals consumed by these fish. As group ration increased, the range of meal sizes and individual CVs in daily feeding decreased, suggesting that the strength of the feeding hierarchy and the variability in individual consumption decreased as food availability increased. It is suggested that radiography can be used to assess social relationships within groups of fish allowing the assessment of feeding hierarchies in larger groups of fish than would be possible by observational techniques.  相似文献

Daily food consumption and alimentary canal evacuation rates for common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., were estimated at 4-week intervals from April to October 1979. Both the rate of food evacuation and its relationship to temperature were described by an exponential function. Gut evacuation rates ranged from 6.0% of gut contents per hour at 9°C to 32.7% h−1 at 26.5°C. Temperature accounted for 72–91% of the variation in gut evacuation rate among months. Daily food consumption varied from a low of 3.87 mg g−1 of fish wet wt per day in April at 14°C (0.39% of wet body wt) to a high of 40.75 mg g−1 (4.08%) in August at 26.5°C. Although a greater quantity of food appeared to be consumed during the morning in spring and early summer and a greater amount in the evening after July, there was not a statistically significant time of day for peak feeding activity. The field method described here seemed to provide reasonable estimates of food consumption compared with other field and laboratory studies.  相似文献

The relative importance of bay habitats, consisting of mangrove creeks and channel, seagrass beds, and mud and sand flats, as feeding grounds for a number of fish species was studied in Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar, Tanzania, using gut content analysis and stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen. Gut content analysis revealed that within fish species almost the same food items were consumed regardless of the different habitats in which they were caught. Crustaceans (mainly copepods, crabs and shrimps) were the preferred food for most zoobenthivores and omnivores, while fishes and algae were the preferred food for piscivores and herbivores, respectively. The mean δ13C values of fishes and food items from the mangrove habitats were significantly depleted to those from the seagrass habitats by 6·9 and 9·7‰ for fishes and food items, respectively, and to those from the mud and sand flats by 3·5 and 5·8‰, respectively. Fishes and food items from the mud and sand flats were significantly depleted as compared to those of the seagrass habitats by 3·4 and 3·9‰, for fishes and food, respectively. Similar to other studies done in different geographical locations, the importance of mangrove and seagrass themselves as a primary source of carbon to higher trophic levels is limited. The different bay habitats were all used as feeding grounds by different fish species. Individuals of the species Gerres filamentosus , Gerres oyena , Lethrinus lentjan , Lutjanus fulviflamma , Pelates quadrilineatus and Siganus sutor appeared to show a connectivity with respect to feeding between different habitats by having δ13C values which were in-between those of food items from two neighbouring habitats. This connectivity could be a result of either daily tidal migrations or recent ontogenetic migration.  相似文献

Social interactions and dominance hierarchy effects are important factors governing rates of growth of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus L. The effects of hierarchy were increased as access to food became more restricted, i.e. feeding frequency was reduced, but these effects could not be attributed to direct competition for food since fish were fed to satiation at each feeding period. The results suggest that, whilst some fish on the restricted feeding regime were able to maintain good rates of growth, feeding by the majority of the fish was inhibited by the presence of larger individuals. Due to the importance of these hierarchy effects it was not possible to demonstrate physiological adaptations in fish allowed infrequent access to food.  相似文献

饥饿是鱼类无法有效获取食物从而使机体呈现能量匮乏的特殊时期, DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid)作为大多数鱼饥饿后得以特别保留的高不饱和脂肪酸, 它对饥饿鱼体可能具有特殊的能量调控作用。为进一步探讨这一问题, 研究设计了以下饲养试验: 先在6%与12%两个油脂水平下分别添加3%DHA制品, 形成基础组、基础-DHA组、高脂组和高脂-DHA组共4组试验饲料。将尾均重为(14.81±0.13) g的鲤360尾随机分为4组, 每组3个重复, 每个重复30尾鱼, 分别用以上4组饲料对进行饲喂, 饲养74d后, 每个养殖缸随机余留6尾鲤(Cyprinus carpio L.)进行饥饿, 36d后检测饥饿鲤体重、生物学性状、体成分、血清生化指标等。结果显示: ①在同一脂肪水平下, DHA添加组饥饿鲤体重减重率均分别显著高于无DHA组(P<0.05); ②在2个油脂水平下DHA添加组饥饿鲤肝细胞直径均分别显著低于无DHA组(P<0.05); 鱼体肥满度、空壳比率等生物学性状在各组饥饿鲤间均无显著差异(P>0.05); ③在2个油脂水平下, DHA添加组饥饿鲤肌肉及肠脂肪含量均分别显著低于无DHA组(P<0.05), 而饥饿鲤肝胰脏脂肪含量在各组间均无显著差异(P>0.05); ④饥饿鲤血清生化指标在各组间均无显著差异(P>0.05)。结果表明, DHA添加组饥饿鲤体重、肝细胞直径以及肌肉及肠脂肪含量均呈显著下降趋势, 显示出DHA的添加未能协助鲤有效抵御饥饿等不良环境的胁迫。  相似文献
