1. Growth and reproduction of Daphnia fed lake seston were measured in two categories of meso‐ to eutrophic lakes differing with respect to terrestrial organic matter influence (humic and clear water lakes). The content of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), P and N, as well as the taxonomical composition of seston were analysed. 2. Seston HUFA and C : P ratios were similar between lake categories, whereas C : N ratios were lower in the clear water lakes in both spring and summer. Despite the similarity in HUFA and P content of seston, Daphnia growth rate, clutch size and the proportion of gravid females were, respectively, about 1.5, 3 and 6 times higher in the clear water lakes. 3. Differences in growth and reproduction were related to a combination of higher N content and good fatty acid quality of the seston in the clear water lakes. Relatively high biomass of edible algae, such as Rhodomonas sp. and Cryptomonas sp., in the clear water lakes, and differences in water pH likely contributed to the observed differences in Daphnia growth and reproduction between lake categories. Additionally, it is possible that Daphnia was energy limited in the humic lakes despite high particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations, as the contribution of non‐algal and detrital C to the POC pool was high. 4. Our results suggest that dietary HUFA content has the potential to improve herbivore growth and reproduction if N and P are not limiting. N merits more attention in studies of zooplankton nutrition.  相似文献

Phytoplankton species composition, seasonal dynamics and spatial distribution in the shallow Lake Doïrani were studied during the growth season of 1996 along with key physical and chemical variables of the water. Weak thermal stratification developed in the lake during the warm period of 1996. The low N:P ratio suggests that nitrogen was the potential limiting nutrient of phytoplankton in the lake. In the phytoplankton of the lake, Chlorophyceae were the most species-rich group followed by Cyanophyceae. The monthly fluctuations of the total phytoplankton biomass presented high levels of summer algal biomass resembling that of other eutrophic lakes. Dinophyceae was the group most represented in the phytoplankton followed by Cyanophyceae. Diatomophyceae dominated in spring and autumn. Nanoplankton comprised around 90% of the total biomass in early spring and less than 10% in summer. The seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton generally followed the typical pattern outlined for other eutrophic lakes. R-species (small diatoms), dominant in the early phase of succession, were replaced by S-species (Microcystis, Anabaena, Ceratium) in summer. With cooling of the water in September, the biomass of diatoms (R-species) increased. The summer algal maxima consisted of a combination of H and M species associations (sensu Reynolds). Phytoplankton development in 1996 was subject to the combined effect of the thermal regime, the small depth of mixing and the increased sediment-water interactions in the lake, which caused changes in the underwater light conditions and nutrient concentrations.  相似文献

Abstract In order to relate the benthic lipid composition to possible sources in the water column, the sestonic communities of a monomictic lake were profiled using their saponifiable polar lipid fatty acids, which were identified by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The epilimnion, dominated by the dinoflagellate alga Ceratium hirundella , was characterized by C20:5 and C22:6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The photic anoxic metalimnion supported a radically different community, dominated by photosynthetic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria ( Chromatium and Chloronema spp.) and a Synechococcus -like cyanobacterium, and was characterized by high concentrations of C16 and C18 monounsaturated fatty acids. The fatty acid compositions of the hypolimnetic seston and the sediment were qualitatively similar to that of the metalimnion. Methyl-branched acids, commonly found in eubacteria, increased with depth in the water column. The concentrations of several unusual fatty acids found in Desulfovibrio spp. Desulfobacter spp. and Desulfotomaculum spp. were inversely related to sulfate concentration in the metalimnion. After the water column mixed in the winter, steep gradients of respiratory terminal electron acceptors developed in the surface sediment and were reflected in the polar lipid fatty acid compositions. The results show that fatty acids derived from the membranes of epilimnetic phytoplankton were efficiently metabolized in the oxic portion of the water column. The fatty acids synthesized by prokaryotic microorganisms at and below the oxycline dominated the sediment. The polar lipid fatty acid composition of the sediment showed seasonal changes which can be associated with concentrations of terminal electron acceptors of microbial respiration, and thus with physiologically distinct bacterial groups.  相似文献

Total phosphorus and total nitrogen explained a low percentage of summer chlorophyll variability in epilimnia of the Great Masurian Lakes. Division of the whole data set into two subgroups of lakes improved approximation of the chlorophyll nutrient relationship but revealed also functional differences between the lakes distinguished in that way. Chlorophyll in eutrophic lakes correlated well with nitrogen and phosphorus, that in mesotrophic lakes (those with summer chlorophyll <=22 mg m–3 as calculated in the model) was related to none of the nutrients. Higher summer chlorophyll content in epilimnetic waters was accompanied by higher chl:PP and chl:PN ratios. Algal adaptation to poor light conditions in eutrophic lakes is postulated as a possible reason for that difference.Chlorophyll – nutrient relationships varied with the trophic status of lakes. Epilimnetic chlorophyll strictly followed phosphorus changes in eutrophic lakes but did not do so in mesotrophic ones. Detailed comparison of selected meso- and eutrophic lakes showed marked differences in the seasonal changes of chlorophyll and nutrient concentrations and in sedimentation rates, especially in spring. Nutrient limitation rather than zooplankton grazing is suggested as a possible mechanism of controlling algal abundance and the sequence of spring events in a eutrophic lake. It is hypothesised that phosphorus turnover in eutrophic lakes is dominated by seasonal vertical fluxes, while in mesotrophic lakes it is more conservative with consumption and regeneration restricted mostly to metalimnion. Possible consequences of such conclusion are discussed in the paper.  相似文献

The vertical distribution and abundance of Gammarus lacustris in the pelagic zone of two fishless meromictic lakes, L. Shira and L. Shunet, in Southern Siberia (Russia), was studied with the underwater video recording system and using vertical hauls. In both lakes, during summer stratification, Gammarus was distributed non-homogenously, with a stable peak in the metalimnion. The average depth of Gammarus population in the pelagic zone was significantly correlated with the depth of the thermocline. Gammarus abundances obtained using vertical plankton hauls with net were quite comparable with those obtained from video records. The peak abundance of Gammarus in the pelagic zone of the lakes observed with underwater video amounted up to 400 individuals m−2, while the peak animal densities in the metalimnion reached 50 ind. m−3. The data are compared with previously published abundances of Gammarus in the littoral of Lake Shira. Both littoral and pelagic can be equally important habitats for amphipods in meromictic lakes. The absence of fish in the pelagic zone, high oxygen concentration, low water temperature, increased seston concentration, elevated water density in the metalimnion and the anoxic hypolimnion can be the most probable combination of factors that are responsible for the peak of Gammarus in the metalimnion of these lakes.  相似文献

1. It is well accepted that fish, if abundant, can have a major impact on the zooplankton community structure during summer, which, particularly in eutrophic lakes, may cascade to phytoplankton and ultimately influence water clarity. Fish predation affects mean size of cladocerans and the zooplankton grazing pressure on phytoplankton. Little is, however, known about the role of fish during winter. 2. We analysed data from 34 lakes studied for 8–9 years divided into three seasons: summer, autumn/spring and winter, and four lake classes: all lakes, shallow lakes without submerged plants, shallow lakes with submerged plants and deep lakes. We recorded how body weight of Daphnia and then cladocerans varied among the three seasons. For all lake types there was a significant positive correlation in the mean body weight of Daphnia and all cladocerans between the different seasons, and only in lakes with macrophytes did the slope differ significantly from one (winter versus summer for Daphnia). 3. These results suggest that the fish predation pressure during autumn/spring and winter is as high as during summer, and maybe even higher during winter in macrophyte‐rich lakes. It could be argued that the winter zooplankton community structure resembles that of the summer community because of low specimen turnover during winter mediated by low fecundity, which, in turn, reflects food shortage, low temperatures and low winter hatching from resting eggs. However, we found frequent major changes in mean body weight of Daphnia and cladocerans in three fish‐biomanipulated lakes during the winter season. 4. The seasonal pattern of zooplankton : phytoplankton biomass ratio showed no correlation between summer and winter for shallow lakes with abundant vegetation or for deep lakes. For the shallow lakes, the ratio was substantially higher during summer than in winter and autumn/spring, suggesting a higher zooplankton grazing potential during summer, while the ratio was often higher in winter in deep lakes. Direct and indirect effects of macrophytes, and internal P loading and mixing, all varying over the season, might weaken the fish signal on this ratio. 5. Overall, our data indicate that release of fish predation may have strong cascading effects on zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton and water clarity in temperate, coastal situated eutrophic lakes, not only during summer but also during winter.  相似文献

Food quality of the natural food (seston) from Lake Monte Alegre was evaluated throughout a series of life-table experiments with cladocerans from the same lake carried out in summer and autumn. Experiments were performed using cohorts of newborns originated from ovigerous females cultured for several generations in the lab or taken directly from the lake. For these tests of food limitation, juveniles of different species were submitted to one of the following treatments: (1) lake seston and (2) lake seston + green algae. The age at first reproduction, mean clutch size, total offspring and the intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) were estimated. Cladocerans responded to both seasonal changes in food resources and to additions of green algae. In summer, food levels were higher and cladocerans grew better than in autumn. The low fecundity and population growth rates of Daphnia gessneri, together with high C:P ratios (>500) in the seston in summer, suggested P limitation. The other cladocerans (Moina micrura, Ceriodaphnia cornuta and Simocephalus mixtus) were apparently less sensitive than D. gessneri to P-limitation in summer. However, energy limitation cannot be disregarded even in summer, although in a lower degree compared to autumn. In this season, the predominance of large diatoms and dinophyceans of low nutritional value and the low food concentration suggested both quantitative and qualitative food limitation. Phytoplankton composition, nutritional value and particle size appeared to be important factors in determining cladocerans reproduction rates with seston diets.  相似文献

We hypothesised that increasing winter affluence and summer temperatures, anticipated in southern Europe with climate change, will deteriorate the ecological status of lakes, especially in those with shorter retention time. We tested these hypotheses analysing weekly phytoplankton and chemistry data collected over 2 years of contrasting weather from two adjacent stratified lakes in North Italy, differing from each other by trophic state and water retention time. Dissolved oxygen concentrations were higher in colder hypolimnia of both lakes in the second year following the cold winter, despite the second summer was warmer and the lakes more strongly stratified. Higher loading during the rainy winter and spring increased nutrient (N, P, Si) concentrations, and a phytoplankton based trophic state index, whilst the N/P ratio decreased in both lakes. The weakened Si limitation in the second year enabled an increase of diatom biovolumes in spring in both lakes. Chlorophyll a concentration increased in the oligo-mesotrophic lake, but dropped markedly in the eutrophic lake where the series of commonly occurring cyanobacteria blooms was interrupted. The projected increase of winter precipitation in southern Europe is likely to increase the nutrient loadings to lakes and contribute to their eutrophication. The impact is proportional to the runoff/in-lake concentration ratio of nutrients rather than to the retention time, and is more pronounced in lakes with lower trophy.  相似文献

1. The concentration and composition of seston were measured in the east basin of Lake Erie (U.S.A.–Canada) to determine whether the classical patterns of nearshore versus offshore zonation considered typical of large lakes have been altered by decades of change in nutrient loading and food web structure, and to test the possibility that food quality for seston consumers, as reflected in nutrient and lipid composition, may currently be diminished. Chlorophyll‐a (chl‐a), particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate P, total lipid (TL), lipid classes, fatty acids and major phytoplankton groups were compared between the nearshore (<20 m) and offshore zones in spring and early summer. 2. Particulate organic carbon, chl‐a and TL concentrations were lower nearshore than offshore, which is a reversal of the classical large lake pattern but consistent with other evidence from the Great Lakes that colonization by filter‐feeding dreissenid mussels can cause seston depletion in relatively shallow waters. 3. Terrestrial and bacterial fatty acid markers were slightly higher in the nearshore than the offshore, but there was little difference in nutrient, taxonomic or biochemical composition between zones otherwise. This shows a small differential influence of terrestrial and detrital inputs, and a slight shift away from phytoplankton dominance of seston composition in the nearshore, but little difference in potential food quality of seston. 4. Microscope counts, phytoplankton fluorescence, and fatty acid composition indicated succession from diatom dominance in May to dominance by cryptophyte and chromophyte flagellates in June and July. Depletion of dissolved P and Si, increased contribution of storage lipids, and changes in fatty acid composition suggested a mild degree of nutrient deficiency during this spring to summer transition. 5. Total lipids were dominated by classes typical of pigments and membranes with only moderate amounts of neutral (storage) lipids, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were abundant (especially the long chain ω‐3 acids) and the POC : chl‐a and POC : particulate P ratios indicated P sufficiency or slight P‐deficiency. Despite concerns that some important consumers in the Great Lakes food web may be suffering from diminished food quality, these results point to a generally high seston food quality even with highly abundant mussels and incipient P deficiency in the east basin of Lake Erie.  相似文献

1. The sources of nitrogen for phytoplankton were determined for a bloom‐prone lake as a means of assessing the hypothesis that cyanobacteria dominate in eutrophic lakes because of their ability to fix nitrogen when the nitrogen : phosphorous (N : P) supply ratio is low and nitrogen a limiting resource. 2. Nitrogen fixation rates, estimated through acetylene reduction with 15N calibration, were compared with 15N‐tracer estimates of ammonium and nitrate uptake monthly during the ice‐free season of 1999. In addition, the natural N stable isotope composition of phytoplankton, nitrate and ammonium were measured biweekly and the contribution of N2 to the phytoplankton signature estimated with a mixing model. 3. Although cyanobacteria made up 81–98% of phytoplankton biomass during summer and autumn, both assays suggested minimal N acquisition through fixation (<9% for the in‐situ incubations; <2% for stable isotope analysis). Phytoplankton acquired N primarily as ammonium (82–98%), and secondarily as nitrate (15–18% in spring and autumn, but <5% in summer). Heterocyst densities of <3 per 100 fixer cells confirmed low reliance on fixation. 4. The lake showed symptoms of both light and nitrogen limitation. Cyanobacteria may have dominated by monopolizing benthic sources of ammonium, or by forming surface scums that shaded other algae.  相似文献

The seasonal occurrence of silica-scaled chrysophytes (Paraphysomonadaceae and Mallomonadaceae) in the eutrophic lake Tystrup Sø, was examined during 1979–1981 in relation to temperature and to overall phytoplankton biomass and composition. The 33 species recorded represent three seasonality types, with occurrence in spring alone, spring and autumn, and during a greater or lesser part of the whole year, including summer. The great majority of the species have their main occurrence in early spring and at low temperatures, perhaps due to effects of the high phytoplankton biomass, especially cyanophytes, during summer and autumn.  相似文献

Sediment cores were taken from near maximum depth in 15 Florida lakes representing a wide range of trophic conditions. Chemical analyses of surface sediments showed Al, Fe, and Ca to be the most abundant elements in all samples, and the ratio of Al to Ca to be smaller for eutrophic lakes. Sediment organic matter increased with trophic state, as did the degree to which it was enriched in nitrogen. Corresponding sediment C/N ratios decreased with increasing lake trophic state and showed significant negative correlation with chlorophylla, total N, and total P in the water column. Concentrations of sedimentary chlorophyll derivatives showed some relation to trophic state but differences in basin morphometry hinder its use as an inter-lake index of chlorophyll production.  相似文献

The effects of fish predation on zooplankton communities arewell documented, but relatively little is known about how predationstructures the genetic composition of individual populations. This study illustrates how a perturbation in the timing andstrength of predation by rainbow trout directly and indirectlyaltered the genetic composition of a Daphnia pulicaria populationin a Minnesota (USA) lake. Trout were stocked in autumn in thefirst 2 years of the study and in spring in the second 2 years. In autumn stocking years, predation was highest over winterand in spring but relatively low during summer stratification. In contrast, in spring stocking years, predation was low overwinter and high during summer stratification. In all years, the Daphnia population became genetically differentiated withrespect to depth, as summer stratification became more pronounced. In addition, allozyme analyses of trout stomach contents revealedselective predation on Daphnia in the metalimnion. In springstocking years, when trout were abundant during the summer, this directly caused a shift in the dominant clone type froma metalimnetic to a hypolimnetic specialist. The fisheries manipulationindirectly affected the genetic composition of the Daphnia populationby altering the importance of recruitment from diapausing embryosin the sediment (the egg bank). In autumn stocking years, whenthe over-wintering population was small, genotype frequenciesin early summer indicated the recent emergence of sexually derivedindividuals from the egg bank. Conversely, in spring stockingyears when over-wintering populations of Daphnia were large,no emergence events were detected.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that larval chironomids assimilate 13C-depleted carbon derived from biogenic methane by feeding on methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB). The dietary contribution of MOB is known to be maximized in the autumn overturn period or winter in eutrophic dimictic lakes due to the increase of MOB biomass following the supply of oxygenated water, but in polymictic lakes, such seasonal variability has not been revealed. We investigated the seasonal patterns of larval δ13C and methane concentrations in the sediment of a eutrophic polymictic lake, Izunuma, Japan. Larval δ13C decreased in late summer and autumn. Methane concentrations above a 6 cm depth peaked in late summer or autumn, while those in the 10–11- and 20–21-cm layers peaked in October. Negative correlations between methane concentrations in the 5–6/10–11-cm layers and larval δ13C were found. This suggests that an increase in the supply of methane stimulated the activity of MOB in a polymictic lake, where water above the lake bottom rarely became anoxic because of frequent overturn, thus increasing the dietary contribution of MOB to larval chironomids.  相似文献

Lakes were surveyed to assess the potential patterns of latitudinalvariation in carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus (C:N:P) stoichiometryof lower food web components. Thirty-four lakes were surveyedat an arctic latitude (68°38'N, 149°38'W) and 10 lakesat a temperate latitude (46°13'N, 89°32'W) during 1997.The temperate data set was augmented with earlier survey resultsemploying similar methods. It was hypothesized that differencesin environmental variables across latitude would cause differencesin community C:N:P ratios, leading to differences in trophicinteractions. Physical measurements (light, temperature), sestonand zooplankton were collected from each lake. Seston and zooplanktonwere analyzed for C, N and P content, and zooplankton were countedand measured for biomass estimates. The degree of trophic interactionbetween seston and zooplankton was assessed by (i) measuringelemental imbalances between seston and zooplankton and (ii)calculating the potential recycling ratio by the zooplanktoncommunity available for seston. Seston C:nutrient, but not N:P,ratios were higher in temperate than arctic lakes. Conversely, arctic zooplankton had higher C:nutrient, but not N:P, ratiosthan zooplankton in temperate lakes. Elemental imbalances weregreater in temperate than in arctic lakes, but N:P stoichiometryof potential zooplankton recycling was nearly identical betweenthe two latitudes. Zooplankton community C:N:P ratios were notrelated to either latitude or seston C:N:P. In accordance withstoichiometric theory, relative abundances of calanoid copepodswere positively correlated with seston C:N in temperate lakes.Additionally, relative abundances of Daphnia were negativelycorrelated with seston C:N ratios in temperate and arctic lakes, and positively correlated with N:P ratios in the arctic. Ingeneral, these results suggest that seston and zooplankton communitystoichiometry differ across latitude, and these differenceshave the potential to affect trophic interactions.  相似文献

Key features of photosynthetic picoplankton populations were compared during 1988 in ten lakes in northern England ranging from oligotrophic to slightly eutrophic; two of the three eutrophic lakes were shallow and lacked a thermocline. Measurements were made at 0.5 m depth of temperature, total chlorophyll a, chlorophyll-containing picoplankton cell density, mean picoplankton cell volume and percentage of phycoerythrin-rich cells in the total picoplankton population. All lakes showed maxima for total chlorophyll concentration and picoplankton cell density in mid- to late summer. The maximum value for picoplankton density ranged from 3.4 × 103 (Esthwaite Water) to 1.3 × 106 cells ml−1 (Ennerdale Water). There was a significant negative relationship (p < 0.05) between log10 of maximum picoplankton cell density and maximum total chlorophyll, the latter being taken as an indicator of lake trophic status. The ratio of maximum to minimum picoplankton density during the year in a particular lake ranged from 39 to 2360 and showed no obvious relationship to lake type. Overall, the seasonal range in picoplankton density was about one order of magnitude greater than the range in total chlorophyll a, but there were considerable differences between lakes. Phycoerythrin-rich picoplankton as a percentage of total picoplankton reached a maximum in summer in all lakes. Values were always very low (<5%) in the two shallow eutrophic lakes, but reached 97% and over in the four most oligotrophic lakes. In two of the oligotrophic lakes, Wast-water and Ennerdale Water, phycoerythrin-rich picoplankton was a major component of the summer phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

Determinants of seston C : P-ratio in lakes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. The ratio of carbon to phosphorus (C : P) in seston is a major determinant of energy transfer in aquatic food webs and may vary more than an order of magnitude owing to various extrinsic and intrinsic factors. In this study, the determinants of C : P‐ratios in lake particulate matter (seston) was assessed in 112 Norwegian lakes, covering a C : P (atomic ratio) from 24 to 1842 (mean 250). 2. No overall effects of lake area, season or latitude on C : P was detected. Particulate P, but not particulate C, correlated with C : P. Multivariate analysis including a range of lake properties revealed total dissolved P, as the major determinant of sestonic C : P, with the fraction of detritus in total seston, chlorophyll or Secchi depth and lake colour as significant contributors. Together these parameters explained 30% of observed variance if using dissolved P and 81% if using total P as input variable to the multivariate model. 3. Chlorophyll and Secchi depth were highly correlated and substitutable in the analysis. Phytoplankton community composition did not affect seston C : P, probably reflecting the fact that live phytoplankton generally contributed <25% of the seston pool. 4. Total P correlated positively with C : P and is the key determinant of phytoplankton biomass and thus Secchi depth; the latter parameters contributed negatively to seston C : P, probably owing to increased light attenuation. These lake data thus support the light : nutrient ratio hypothesis, i.e. that high light and low P cause skewed uptake ratios of C to P. 5. Zooplankton biomass in general and Daphnia biomass in particular, was negatively correlated with C : P, probably reflecting a negative impact of poor seston quality at high C : P. Zooplankton grazing and nutrient recycling may also have contributed to a negative correlation between zooplankton biomass and sestonic C : P.  相似文献

Nutrient availability, in particular of phosphorus (P), is a key factor for the structure and functioning of shallow lakes, and not least the sediment plays an important role by acting as both a nutrient source and sink. We used 21 years of monthly mass balance and lake water data from six shallow (mean depth = 1.2–2.7 m) and fast flushed (mean hydraulic retention time = 0.6–2.6 months) eutrophic Danish lakes (mean summer P concentrations ranging from 0.09 to 0.61 mg/l) to investigate long-term trends in yearly and seasonal patterns of P retention. To one of the lakes, the external P input was reduced by 70% in the early 1990s, whereas none of the other lakes have experienced major changes in external P loading for more than 20 years. All lakes showed a distinct seasonal pattern with high P concentrations and typically negative P retention during summer (up to ?300% of the external loading from May to August). During winter, P retention was overall positive (up to 50% of the external loading from December to April). Internal P loading from the sediment delayed lake recovery by approximately 10 years in the lake with the most recently reduced external loading, but in all the lakes net release of P from the sediment occurred during summer. P release in the six lakes has not abated during the past decade, indicating that the sediment of eutrophic and turbid shallow lakes remains a net source of P during summer. The seasonal variations in P retention became more pronounced with increasing P levels, and retention decreased with increasing temperature, but increased if clear water conditions were established.  相似文献

Sestonic biochemical composition (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) may change with varying environmental fluctuations. These changes and the effects in the nutritional status of algae consists of an actual increasing source of interest. The aims of this work were to establish the relationship between biochemical composition of seston and 1) a range of physical, chemical and climatological factors, and 2) the natural fluctuation in the species composition in phytoplankton assemblages of the Pampulha Reservoir, an urban eutrophic lake located in Belo Horizonte, MG. Seasonal changes in the biochemical composition were observed in this study. None of the considered abiotic factors alone seem to affect the biochemical composition. So the effects could only be understood by interactions among different environmental factors. On the other hand, the dominant algal groups probably have some influence in the observed changes in biochemical composition of seston.  相似文献

Lake Inba is one of the most eutrophic lakes in Japan. In this study, field sampling and nutrient enrichment bioassays were conducted to determine the seasonal patterns of nutrient limitation for phytoplankton growth in this lake. Phytoplankton biomass increased significantly with the additions of phosphorus (P) on almost all sampling dates, indicating P limitation of phytoplankton growth from spring to autumn. However, nitrogen (N) limitation was also observed during summer (i.e., 19 August). On 10 August, a typhoon struck Lake Inba. After this event, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphorus concentrations increased, probably because of increased river discharge. At the same time, phytoplankton growth in the control treatment became relatively high, with the addition of neither P nor N stimulating the growth. However, 10 days after the typhoon, the phytoplankton growth rate in the control treatment decreased, with only the addition of N having a significant positive effect on phytoplankton growth. N limitation during summer is caused by the low concentrations of DIN, as well as changes in the N:P ratio due to allochthonous nutrient loads. These results indicate that a reduction of both P and N input is necessary to control phytoplankton blooms in Lake Inba.  相似文献
