Apterichtus keramanus, a new snake-eel from Okinawa, southern Japan (Ophichthinae, Ophichthidae)

A new snake-eel,Apterichtus keramanus, is described on the basis of a single 276-mm TL specimen trawled from the coast of Kerama Islands, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The species is unique in the genus in having the posterior nostril opening entirely inside the mouth and a dark band running from the anteroventral margin of the eye to the upper lip.     

Plant-growth regulators from common starfish (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Asterias amurensis</Emphasis> Lütken) waste

Starfish waste has been shown to be an effective compost material not only in the promotion of plant growth but also in terms of having insecticidal activity. In the present study, plant growth regulation by chemicals from starfish was examined. The aqueous fraction from a hot water extract of the starfish Asterias amurensis Lütken showed plant-growth activity, while the aqueous fraction from a methanol extract inhibited growth of Brassica campestris. The lipophilic fraction from the methanol extract also exhibited a plant growth-promoting effect. The active components from each extract were identified. Asterubine from the hot water extract promoted plant growth. A ceramide from the lipophilic fraction showed root growth promoting effect, and three glucocerebrosides had promotive effects on the entire plant. Asterosaponins were identified as the main growth inhibitors in the aqueous fraction of the methanol extract. These active compounds from starfish waste could be analyzed as potential plant growth regulators in agricultural applications in the future.     

Karyotype evolution in Curimatidae (Teleostei, Characiformes) from the Amazon region. II. Centric fissions in the genus Potamorhina

Using cytogenetic analysis following Giemsa staining, nucleolar organizer region (NOR) staining, and C-banding, three distinct karyotypes in three species of curimatids belonging to the fish genus Potamorhina were identified: 2n = 54/44 M + 10 SM (P. pristigaster), 2n = 56/52 M + 2 SM + 2 ST (P. latior), and 2n = 102/2 M + 2 SM + 98 A (P. altamazonica). A 2n = 54 was considered to be the ancestral diploid number and the different karyotypes were probably the result of centric fissions. Both the NOR pattern and constitutive heterochromatin pattern are species specific.     

Expression of a deletion mutant of the prosegment of human prorenin in Chinese hamster ovary cells

Expression plasmids encoding native human preporenin and a mutant deleted in its entire prosegment were transfected into Chinese hamster ovary cells. The cells transfected with the expression plasmid of native preporenin secreted exclusively inactive prorenin, while the cells transfected with the mutant secreted the active enzyme. The secreted amount of renin from the latter cells was much lower than that of prorenin from the former ones, although these two enzymes had little difference in specific activity after trypsin activation. These results suggest that the prosegment plays an important role in the secretory process of renin, although the fully active enzyme can be formed in its absence.     

Studies of Sl/Sld in equilibrium with +/+ mouse aggregation chimaeras. II. Effect of the steel locus on spermatogenesis

Mutant mice of Sl/Sld genotype are deficient in melanocytes, erythrocytes, mast cells and germ cells. Deficiency of melanocytes, erythrocytes and mast cells is not attributable to an intrinsic defect in their precursor cells but to a defect in the tissue environment that is necessary for migration, proliferation and/or differentiation. We investigated the mechanism of germ cell deficiency in male Sl/Sld mice by producing aggregation chimaeras from Sl/Sld and +/+ embryos. Chimaeric mice with apparent white stripes were obtained. Two of four such chimaeras were fertile and the phenotypes of resulting progenies showed that some Sl/Sld germ cells had differentiated into functioning sperms in the testis of the chimaeras. In cross sections of the testes of chimaeras, both differentiated and nondifferentiated tubules were observed. However, the proportions of type A spermatogonia to Sertoli cells in both types of tubules were comparable to the values observed in differentiated tubules of normal +/+ mice. We reconstructed the whole length of four tubules from serial sections. Differentiated and nondifferentiated segments alternated in a single tubule. The shortest differentiated segment contained about 180 Sertoli cells and the shortest nondifferentiated segment about 150 Sertoli cells. These results suggest that Sertoli cells of either Sl/Sld or +/+ genotype make discrete patches and that differentiation of type A spermatogonia does not occur in patches of Sl/Sld Sertoli cells.     

Immunocytochemical observation of paraquat-induced alveolitis with special reference to class II MHC antigens.

The expression of class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens on alveolar epithelial cells and macrophages was investigated immunocytochemically in paraquat-induced alveolitis in the rat lung. Until 2 days after paraquat injection, class II MHC antigens were expressed on the type II alveolar epithelium without any inflammatory cellular infiltration. From the 4th to the 7th day after paraquat injection, class II MHC antigen-positive macrophages increased in the alveolar spaces, whereas the expression on the type II alveolar epithelium became obscure. Over 10 days after the injection, interstitial fibrosis progressed and the intra-alveolar inflammatory infiltrates decreased. Epithelial cells lining the thickened fibrous septa no longer expressed class II MHC antigens. These results suggest that chemical stimuli can induce class II MHC antigen expression on the type II alveolar epithelium in the early stage of cellular injury, followed by inflammatory infiltration and interstitial fibrosis.
