Understanding the seasonal movements and distribution patterns of migratory species over ocean basin scales is vital for appropriate conservation and management measures. However, assessing populations over remote regions is challenging, particularly if they are rare. Blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus spp) are an endangered species found in the Southern and Indian Oceans. Here two recognized subspecies of blue whales and, based on passive acoustic monitoring, four “acoustic populations” occur. Three of these are pygmy blue whale (B.m. brevicauda) populations while the fourth is the Antarctic blue whale (B.m. intermedia). Past whaling catches have dramatically reduced their numbers but recent acoustic recordings show that these oceans are still important habitat for blue whales. Presently little is known about the seasonal movements and degree of overlap of these four populations, particularly in the central Indian Ocean. We examined the geographic and seasonal occurrence of different blue whale acoustic populations using one year of passive acoustic recording from three sites located at different latitudes in the Indian Ocean. The vocalizations of the different blue whale subspecies and acoustic populations were recorded seasonally in different regions. For some call types and locations, there was spatial and temporal overlap, particularly between Antarctic and different pygmy blue whale acoustic populations. Except on the southernmost hydrophone, all three pygmy blue whale acoustic populations were found at different sites or during different seasons, which further suggests that these populations are generally geographically distinct. This unusual blue whale diversity in sub-Antarctic and sub-tropical waters indicates the importance of the area for blue whales in these former whaling grounds.  相似文献

Proline residues, known to have special structural properties, induce particular conformations which participate in some biological functions. Two prolines (Pro(-9), Pro(-5)) located near the processing sites (Arg(-15) and Arg(-2)Lys(-)(1)) of human prosomatostatin were previously shown to be important for cleavage of the precursor into somatostatin-28 (S-28) and somatostatin-14 (S-14) [Gomez et al. (1989) EMBO J. 8, 2911-2916]. In this study, the importance of the pentapeptide P-A-M-A-P sequence (P-(X)(3)-P pattern), located in the S-28(1-12) segment connecting the mono- and dibasic cleavage sites, was investigated by using site-directed mutagenesis. Analysis of prosomatostatin-derived peptides produced by expression of mutated cDNA species in Neuro2A cells indicated that (i) deletion of PAMAP decreased S-14 production, (ii) deletion of the two Pro residues almost abolished the cleavage at the dibasic site, and (iii) Pro displacement generating the AMAPP motif resulted in a decrease of S-28 production. Moreover, both theoretical and spectroscopic studies of synthetic peptides reproducing the S-28(1-12) sequence bearing critical mutations showed that this sequence can organize as an alpha helical structure. These observations demonstrate that NPAMAP constitutes an accurate alpha-helix nucleation motif allowing for the generation of equal amounts of S-28 and S-14 from their common precursor in Neuro2A cells. Moreover, they emphasize the importance of the S-28(1-12) segment joining Arg(-15) and Arg(-2)Lys(-1) cleavage sites whose conformational organization is essential for controlling their accessibility to the appropriate processing proteases.  相似文献

Practitioners of life cycle assessment (LCA) have recently turned their attention to social issues in the supply chain. The United Nations life cycle initiative's social LCA task force has completed its guidelines for social life cycle assessment of products, and awareness of managing upstream corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues has risen due to the growing popularity of LCA. This article explores one approach to assessing social issues in the supply chain—life cycle attribute assessment (LCAA). The approach was originally proposed by Gregory Norris in 2006, and we present here a case study. LCAA builds on the theoretical structure of environmental LCA to construct a supply chain model. Instead of calculating quantitative impacts, however, it asks the question “What percentage of my supply chain has attribute X?” X may represent a certification from a CSR body or a self‐defined attribute, such as “is locally produced.” We believe LCAA may serve as an aid to discussions of how current and popular CSR indicators may be integrated into a supply chain model. The case study demonstrates the structure of LCAA, which is very similar to that of traditional environmental LCA. A labor hours data set was developed as a satellite matrix to determine number of worker hours in a greenhouse tomato supply. Data from the Quebec tomato producer were used to analyze how the company performed on eight sample LCAA indicators, and conclusions were drawn about where the company should focus CSR efforts.  相似文献

Endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress contribute to the atherosclerotic process that includes stiffening of large peripheral arteries. In contrast, our laboratory previously reported a paradoxical increase in cerebrovascular compliance in LDLr(-/-):hApoB(+/+) atherosclerotic (ATX) mice (7). We hypothesized that prevention of cerebral artery endothelial dysfunction with a chronic dietary antioxidant intake would normalize the changes in cerebral artery wall structure and biomechanics and prevent the decline in basal cerebral blood flow associated with atherosclerosis. Three-month-old ATX mice were treated, or not, for 3 mo with the polyphenol (+)-catechin (CAT; 30 mg·kg(-1)·day(-1)) and compared with wild-type controls. In isolated, pressurized cerebral arteries from ATX mice, CAT prevented endothelial dysfunction (deterioration of endothelium-dependent, flow-mediated dilations; P < 0.05), the inward hypertrophic structural remodeling (increase in the wall-to-lumen ratio; P < 0.05), and the rise in cerebrovascular compliance (rightward shift of the stress-strain curve measured in passive conditions, reflecting mechanical properties of the arterial wall; P < 0.05). Doppler optical coherence tomography imaging in vivo confirmed these findings, showing that cerebral compliance was higher in ATX mice and normalized by CAT (P < 0.05). CAT also prevented basal cerebral hypoperfusion in ATX mice (P < 0.05). Active remodeling of the cerebrovascular wall in ATX mice was further suggested by the increase (P < 0.05) in pro-metalloproteinase-9 activity, which was normalized by CAT. We conclude that, by preserving the endothelial function, a chronic treatment with CAT prevents the deleterious effect of severe dyslipidemia on cerebral artery wall structure and biomechanical properties, contributing to preserving resting cerebral blood flow.  相似文献

Apelin and its receptor APJ are expressed in fetal tissues but their function and regulation remain largely unknown. In rat, maternal treatment with a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor inducing hypertension was used to investigate apelin plasma levels in mother/fetus pairs and on the gene expression level of the apelin/APJ system in fetal tissues and placenta. At term, plasma levels of apelin were not modulated but APJ expression was increased in placenta and lung but reduced in heart. Apelin expression was increased only in the heart. We postulate that the apelinergic system may control fetal growth and cardiovascular functions in utero.  相似文献

Abstract Mycelia from the basidiomycete Phanerochaete chrysosporium , producing lignin and manganese peroxidases, were homogenized and fractionated on a sucrose gradient. The main subcellular fungal membrane fractions were successfully separated. Lipid composition analyses of the isolated membranes as well as associated marker enzymes distribution gave evidence to similarities with membranes originating from plants. Lignin and manganese peroxidases were investigated by immunodetection in subcellular fractions. Our results show that lignin and manganese peroxidases are mainly associated with Golgi apparatus vesicles and, to a lesser extent, with endoplasmic reticulum and light density vesicles, but not with plasma membranes.  相似文献

Human TWIK-1, which has been cloned recently, is a new structural type of weak inward rectifier K+ channel. Here we report the structural and functional properties of TREK-1, a mammalian TWIK-1-related K+ channel. Despite a low amino acid identity between TWIK-1 and TREK-1 (approximately 28%), both channel proteins share the same overall structural arrangement consisting of two pore-forming domains and four transmembrane segments (TMS). This structural similarity does not give rise to a functional analogy. K+ currents generated by TWIK-1 are inwardly rectifying while K+ currents generated by TREK-1 are outwardly rectifying. These channels have a conductance of 14 pS. TREK-1 currents are insensitive to pharmacological agents that block TWIK-1 activity such as quinine and quinidine. Extensive inhibitions of TREK-1 activity are observed after activation of protein kinases A and C. TREK-1 currents are sensitive to extracellular K+ and Na+. TREK-1 mRNA is expressed in most tissues and is particularly abundant in the lung and in the brain. Its localization in this latter tissue has been studied by in situ hybridization. TREK-1 expression is high in the olfactory bulb, hippocampus and cerebellum. These results provide the first evidence for the existence of a K+ channel family with four TMS and two pore domains in the nervous system of mammals. They also show that different members in this structural family can have totally different functional properties.  相似文献

A simplified method for the culture of neonatal Biomphalaria glabrata snails on a diet of the cyanobacteria Nostoc sp. has been developed. Previous studies reported using Nostoc sp. grown on a mud-based medium to feed neonatal snails; this medium is difficult to prepare and gives inconsistent growth between laboratories due to variations in the soil used in its preparation. Here, we report the use of Bg-11 medium supplemented with sodium nitrate for the culture of Nostoc sp. as a food source for neonatal B. glabrata snails. Bacteria grown in the medium may be maintained in continuous culture and used exclusively as the nutrient source for neonatal snails. Neonatal snails fed with these bacteria exhibit a growth rate of 1-2 mm per week and may be transferred to standard culture conditions after 2-3 wk. Survival of neonatal snails after 2 wk on the Nostoc sp. diet was 60-80%, while survival after switching to standard culture conditions approached 100%. Analysis of the growth rate and survival of neonatal snails maintained on Nostoc sp., as well as the growth rate, survival, and sexual maturation of the resulting juvenile snails, showed that snails maintained using this method are phenotypically comparable to those maintained under other standard laboratory conditions.  相似文献
