LOCATION AND HISTOLOGY OF PHEROMONE-PRODUCING GLAND IN GYNAEPHORA QINGHAIENSIS CHOU ET YING (LEPIDOPTERA: LYMANTRIIDAE)

The sex pheromone-prcducing gland in Gynaephora qinghaiensis Chou et Ying is a fold of glandular epithelium situated dorsally in the intersegmental membrane between the 8th and 9th abdominal segments and crescent in shape. The epicuticle overlying the gland is smooth and lack of scales. The endocuticle is thicker than the epicuticle. The glandular cells arrange in V-shaped and endocuticle protrudes into the fold. The unusual cell arrangement in Gynaep-hora Qinghaiensis is likely to provide the female with greater potential for the pheromone production but the proportion of the area of overlying epicuticle to that of glandular cells reduces. It is unfavourable for pheromone release. It is likely that a rhythmic protraction and retraction of 8th 9th and 10th abdominal segments remedy that defect.
