Spraying Chinese cabbage seedlings [Brassica pekinensis (Lour.) Rupr.] with the growth retardant daminozide (succinic acid-2,2-dimethylhydrazide) reduced tipburn of the mature plants. As the concentration of daminozide increased, the reduction in tipburn damage was correlated with increased calcium content in young susceptible leaves. This effect was much more pronounced in plants that were misted once a day during the head formation period.Incubation of detached Chinese cabbage leaves for 48 h (in the dark) in solutions which contained either EDTA or EGTA caused characteristic lesions at the leaf tips. The extent of the damage was reduced by including CaCl2 in the solutions. Leaves which were incubated in a solution of EDTA+GA3 or EGTA+GA3 were severely affected, with the latter solution being the more harmful. GA3 alone did not enhance tipburn. CaCl2 greatly reduced the effect of a complex of chelating agents and GA3. Leaves derived from daminozide-treated plants which were incubated in EDTA+GA3 were less affected with tipburn lesions than leaves of control plants treated with the same solutions. When detached leaves were water-stressed for 24 h prior to incubation in these solutions, the severity of tipburn symptoms increased. Summary Different levels of sulfureous compounds were applied to the soil before sowing or four to six weeks after sowing seeds of head lettuce (Lactuca sativa var.capitata L.) in five field plots throughout Arizona during 1979 and 1983. Plants were rated for tipburn incidence at harvest. Tipburn severity values were consistently lower in cultivars, Calmar, Vanguard and Empire and higher in cultivar Green bud in treated plots compared to non-treated plots. However, disease severity ratings in treated and non-treated plots were not significantly different at the 5% level. Attempts to control lettuce tipburn by foliar and soil application of calcium salts have been successful in the greenhouse and in the laboratory3, 6, 7, but not in the field1, 2, 4. Therefore, we undertook the present study to determine if the disease can be managed by soil application of sulfureous compounds. Our rational for using sulfureous compounds was based on the assumption that these compounds may convert a portion of the relatively water insoluble calcium carbonate (present in large quantities in the calcereous soils of Arizona and California) into more water soluble calcium sulfate by causing a slight drop in soil pH. Moreover, different formulations of sulfureous compounds, including those used in this study, are being used by some lettuce growers as soil conditioners and fertilizers. 缺钙培养诱导大白菜干烧心发生 ,测定心叶组织细胞壁各成分含量的变化。结果表明 ,随着缺钙天数增加 ,果胶、半纤维素 1(HC1)和纤维素的含量呈平稳上升 ,到缺钙处理后第 2 4天时达到高峰 ,随后急剧下降 ,而半纤维素 2 (HC2 )的含量变化不大 ;醛酸在果胶中的含量逐渐呈下降趋势 ,在HC2中的含量先升后降 ,而在HC1和纤维素中的含量变化不大 ;总糖在HC1和纤维素中的含量呈下降趋势 ,在果胶中的含量先升后降 ,而在HC2中的含量变化不大 ;葡聚糖含量也是先升后降 ,在缺钙处理后第 8天有一高峰值 ;尤其是蛋白质在果胶和纤维素部分中的含量较低且变化不大 ,在HC1中的含量极明显减少 ,而在HC2中的含量却极显著增加。同时 ,细胞壁结构发生相应变化。可见 ,大白菜干烧心的发生与细胞壁结构和功能的变化直接相关  相似文献

A procedure was developed to reduce premature bolting and flowering in Chinese cabbage grown in the field during the winter. This involved (a) the use of geothermic water as an inexpensive heat source for heating the transplants in the nursery; (b) application of the growth retardants daminozide (Alar) and paclobutrazol (PP333) to the heated plants before removing them to the field; and (c) application of daminozide to the plants in the field. This procedure markedly reduced stem elongation and the length of the internal stem in relation to the head without affecting the size of the head. Furthermore, application of daminozide in the field minimized the severity of tipburn, a common physiological disorder in Chinese cabbage fields. The result of such treatment was the production of high-quality Chinese cabbage heads which otherwise are unobtainable during the winter.Contribution from the Agricultural Research Organization, The volcani Center, Bet Dagan, Israel.
