The herbivorous mayfly Heptagenia sulphurea is characteristic of rivers with stony bottoms. Records from the 20th century showed that this species had disappeared from the Common Meuse in the Netherlands, probably due to river regulation or changes in water quality. A field survey in 2003 showed that H. sulphurea was present in the Geul tributary, approximately 300 m upstream of its confluence with the Common Meuse. H. sulphurea has not recolonized the Common Meuse despite improvements in water quality over the last decades. Concentration of suspended sediments in the River Meuse, however, is still high, much higher than in the beginning of the 20th century. The presence of a silt layer may limit the return of H. sulphurea in this river by reducing availability and quality of its food. The prime objective of this study was to investigate the impact of silt on survival and growth of H. sulphurea in a laboratory experiment. Furthermore, the impact of water and periphyton quality from the Common Meuse on survival and growth of this mayfly was also investigated. Results showed that neither water quality nor cultured periphyton from the Common Meuse reduced survival and growth of H. sulphurea. The presence of a silt layer resulted in a significantly lower growth rate of the mayfly larvae. It is concluded that the silt layer reduces the accessibility of the food. Covering of food is possibly one of the main factors limiting the recolonization of H. sulphurea and probably other benthic grazers in the Common Meuse.  相似文献

The role of hydrological droughts in shaping meiofauna abundance through alterations in biofilm biomass and composition was investigated. In January 2005, continental Portugal was under a moderate to severe drought resulting from a 40% to 60% decrease in rainfall during the previous 12 months relative to the long-term average (1961–1990). Reservoir capacity was reduced by 30–50% relative to average values and the width of streams was reduced by 20–80% in the Zêzere River Basin (central Portugal). Algal biomass and algal class composition of biofilms was assessed through quantification of algal pigments in three reservoir and six river locations. During drought, habitat alterations are expected to be sharp in rivers while, in the absence of water quality deterioration, the habitat characteristics of reservoirs are expected to remain fairly unaffected. Chlorophylls and carotenoid pigments were extracted from biofilm samples and analysed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In the winter of 2003, during the period of average rainfall, biofilm biomass did not exceed 5 μg chlorophyll a cm−2 at any location. River biofilm biomass was roughly half of that measured in the reservoirs. In the winter of 2005 (drought), biofilm biomass increased by more than 5-fold in river locations and remained low or decreased in the reservoirs. Algal biofilms were either dominated by Bacillariophyceae or by Chlorophyceae regardless of the existence of drought. The relative contribution of Bacillariophyceae to total biofilm biomass was higher during the drought than under average hydrological conditions. The abundance of harpacticoids, cladocerans and ostracods was favoured by the drought only in the reservoirs where an increase in diatom proportion in biofilms was observed. The increase in the abundance of cyclopoid copepods, turbellarians, nematodes and chironomids in rivers during the drought could be explained by algal class composition and biomass of biofilms and environmental variables (organic matter sediment content, phosphorus availability content and sediment granulometry). The hydrological drought appears to regulate meiofauna abundance only in river locations, possibly through the promotion of the growth of biofilms and the availability of organic matter deposited in rivers during the drought. Stable isotope signatures (δ13C and δ15N) were used to compare trophic linkages between epilithic periphyton and three families of macroinvertebrates (Baetidae, Leptophlebiidae and Gripopterygidae) in riffles of two rivers with developed catchments (including agriculture, urbanization, impoundment and flow regulation) and two with undeveloped catchments (native forest with no major impoundments) in the Murrumbidgee River system, New South Wales, Australia. Periphyton had much higher average δ15N values and lower average C:N ratios in the developed rivers than in the undeveloped rivers, probably because of the combined effects of nutrient enrichment, upstream impoundment and alteration of riparian vegetation. The invertebrates were generally slightly depleted in 13C and 15N relative to expected values if they were assimilating whole periphyton alone, which suggests that they were assimilating periphyton components selectively or also consuming other foods. The match in isotope signatures between periphyton and invertebrates was only slightly weaker in the developed than in the undeveloped rivers, suggesting that development did not greatly disrupt trophic linkages between periphyton and these invertebrates. Conservation and reuse of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from animalmanure is increasingly important as producers try to minimize transport ofthesenutrients from farms. An alternative to land spreading is to grow crops ofalgaeon the N and P present in the manure. The general goal of our research is toassess nutrient recovery from animal manure using attached algae. The specificobjective of this study was to evaluate the use of small subsections of algalturfs for determining N and P removal rates by attached algae under differentloading rates of dairy manure. Algae were grown in a laboratory–scalealgal turf scrubber (ATS) operated by recycling wastewater and adding manureeffluent daily. Replicate subsections (0.032 m2) ofalgal turf screens were removed and treated with five different loadings ofanaerobically digested dairy manure containing 5 to 80 mgL–1 NH4-N and 1 to 20 mgL–1 PO4-P over a 2-h incubationperiod. NH4-N removal rates were biphasic with a fast initial ratefollowed by a slower rate. Biphasic rates were more pronounced for the lowestloading rates but less so for the higher ones. PO4-P removal rateswere linear throughout the incubation period for all loading rates. N and Premoval rates increased with increasing loading rate and biomass. Inincubationsusing 1% dairy manure NH4-N and PO4-P removal ratesaveraged 0.72 and 0.33 g m–2d–1,respectively. These rates were approximately 5 to 8-fold lower than ratesmeasured on laboratory-scale ATS units using undisturbed turfs.  相似文献

Although many field trials have been conducted using Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti)-based formulations, most have been in rivers with different biotic and abiotic conditions thus rendering the evaluation of their performance very difficult. Recently, results of a threeyear experiment using a new field procedure brought new insight into the behavior and the performance (carry) of two liquid formulations of Bti, Teknar HP-D and Vectobac 1200L, tested in the same lotic environment and under similar abiotic and biotic conditions. Factors such as discharge, water temperature and the hyporheic zone were identified as elements affecting the downstream loss of activity of both products. However, to better understand the reduction of black fly mortality along a stream (measured by using gutters), data of residual dosages of both products (measured by laboratory assay with mosquito larvae) were compared with reduction of black fly mortality. Bti toxic activity was monitored from water samples taken at different distances downstream from an application point, and from probes driven into the hyporheic zone, to study the effects of abiotic factors on the loss of the toxic crystals. Results showed that the loss of dosage was exponential for both products but more crystals were recovered from Vectobac 1200L along the stream than from Teknar HP-D. However, the latter was more efficient, i.e. less toxins were needed to kill 50% of black fly larvae both in temperate (16°C) and warmer (19.5-22°C) water. Also, a rise in water temperature had a greater effect in the kill induced by Vectobac 1200L compared to Teknar HP-D. For the same residual dosages present at the stations, longer carries of toxin activity (higher mortalities) were obtained in warmer water. Finally, the hyporheic zone was identified as a major source of loss of activity of Bti products. Large stream discharges decreased the effect of the hyporheic zone and that was reflected in longer carry of the products.  相似文献

Epilithic periphyton and detritus studies in a subalpine stream   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
The accumulation of epilithic periphyton in Ward Creek, a permanent stream within the Lake Tahoe basin, California, was measured weekly at three stations from July through September, 1972. Subsamples were analyzed for total carbon and adenosine triposphate content. The mean total carbon content at three stations over the period of investigation was 0.508 ± 0.263 mg carbon cm–2. Live biomass, as estimated from ATP measurements, averaged 0.121 ± 0.115 mg carbon cm 2. It was estimated that approximately 76% of the organic carbon accumulating on rock substrates was present as detritus. Scanning electron microscopy of rock substrates suggested that much of this detrital accumulation may consist of diatom stalk materials. This work was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation/RANN GI-22. River ecosystems are the prime example of environments where unidirectional flow influences the dispersal of individuals. Spatial patterns of community composition and species replacement emerge from complex interplays of hydrological, geochemical, biological, and ecological factors. Local processes affecting algal dynamics are well understood, but a mechanistic basis for large scale emerging patterns is lacking. To understand how these patterns could emerge in rivers, we analyze a reaction-advection-diffusion model for two competitors in heterogeneous environments. The model supports waves that invade upstream up to a well-defined "upstream invasion limit". We discuss how these waves are produced and present their key properties. We suggest that patterns of species replacement and coexistence along spatial axes reflect stalled waves, produced from diffusion, advection, and species interactions. Emergent spatial scales are plausible given parameter estimates for periphyton. Our results apply to other systems with unidirectional flow such as prevailing winds or climate-change scenarios.  相似文献

Replicated, factorial mesocosm experiments were conducted across Europe to study the effects of nutrient enrichment and fish density on macrophytes and on periphyton chlorophyll a (chl-a) with regard to latitude. Periphyton chl-a densities and plant decline were significantly related to nutrient loading in all countries. Fish effects were significant in a few sites only, mostly because of their contribution to the nutrient pool. A saturation-response type curve in periphyton chl-a with nutrients was found, and northern lakes achieved higher densities than southern lakes. Nutrient concentration and phytoplankton chl-a necessary for a 50% plant reduction followed a latitudinal gradient. Total phosphorus values for 50% plant disappearance were similar from Sweden (0.27 mg L−1) to northern Spain (0.35 mg L−1), but with a sharp increase in southern Spain (0.9 mg L−1). Planktonic chl-a values for 50% plant reduction increased monotonically from Sweden (30 μg L−1) to València (150 μg L−1). Longer plant growing-season, higher light intensities and temperature, and strong water-level fluctuations characteristic of southern latitudes can lead to greater persistence of macrophyte biomass at higher turbidities and nutrient concentration than in northern lakes. Results support the evidence that latitudinal differences in the functioning of shallow lakes should be considered in lake management and conservation policies.  相似文献

We studied the competitive effects within and between two taxonomically distant freshwater herbivores, a snail and a mayfly, common in Swedish lakes, Lymnaea peregra and Cloeon dipterum, respectively, and their effect on grazing in a laboratory experiment. The experimental set-up consisted of 2-l aquaria, each containing a periphyton covered tile. Intra- and interspecific effects were tested by increasing the density of one species at a time in four different treatments, (1) snails (intraspecific treatment), (2) mayflies (intraspecific treatment), (3) mixed-snails (interspecific treatments, snails kept constant) and (4) mixed-mayflies (interspecific treatments, mayflies kept constant). Intraspecific competition affected both snails and mayflies negatively, i.e. increasing mortality with increasing con-specific density. Furthermore, there was a decrease in snail growth with increasing snail density. In the mixed-species treatments both species changed their microhabitat use indicating interspecific competition. Despite this, we also found a positive effect of mayfly density on snail growth, most likely due to indirect commensalism. No density-dependent effect of grazing on periphyton was found, probably due to interference competition between grazers. However, there was a significant difference in periphyton biomass, due to species composition of grazers. Irrespective of their densities, if they co-existed, the two grazer species decreased the periphyton biomass significantly compared with both single-species treatments. We considered this as a joint action of facilitation and interaction. Our results suggest that competition can be an important structuring factor in macroinvertebrate communities and that species composition can be significant for ecosystem processes within lentic environments.  相似文献

Synopsis Campostoma spp., widespread and abundant herbivorous minnows of eastern North America, produce distinctive grazing scars when feeding on algae attached to natural substrates in streams. These scars are particularly prominent upon the low growth forms of blue-green algae that dominate the attached algal flora of many upland streams. In one stream pool in the Ozark uplands of Oklahoma, numbers and sizes of grazing scars coincided with numbers and sizes of individual Campostoma that occurred across a depth gradient, demonstrating that the information contained in the scars can provide quantification of microhabitat use and grazing intensity of these important herbivores. The results also support the hypothesis that in environments free of aquatic predators, larger fish use deeper parts of available stream habitats, particularly if threats from terrestrial or avian predators exist.  相似文献
