 The distribution of stream-specific filamentous green algae (SSFG) was investigated in the middle reach of the Tama River, Japan. Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kützing and Stigeoclonium sp. dominated among five taxa of SSFG collected in the riverbed with fast currents. These two species were abundant in shallow (<20 cm) riffles with high current velocity (>30 cm s−1), a habitat characterized by high light intensity and extensive aeration. SSFG biomass fluctuated greatly (range, 1.2–85.3 cm2 m−2), exhibiting no clear seasonal trend. The tufts of SSFG grown on riffle cobbles decreased rapidly when these cobbles were transferred to habitats with either deep water, low current velocity, or both. Laboratory experiments revealed that aeration retarded the decrease in SSFG in incubation vessels. These results suggest that the turbulent conditions of riffle habitats are important for the growth and survival of SSFG in the Tama River. 2014年11月至2015年8月调查了西湖湖西沿岸带浮游藻类和不同基质(植物、石块和底泥)上着生藻类的群落结构及季节变化, 分析了着生丝状藻与浮游丝状藻的相互关系以及它们与环境因子的相关性, 探讨湖西生态修复过程中季节性暴发的丝状藻水华的原因。结果表明浮游藻类和植物、底泥、石头上着生藻类中均以硅藻门种类数(分别占52.5%、60.4%、86.7%和72.7%)最多, 蓝藻门(分别占10.1%、8.9%、6.7%和15.2%)和绿藻门(分别占26.3%、19.8%、5.6%和10.6%)次之, 其他门类相对较少, 浮游藻类与着生藻类优势种季节差异较大。附植丝状藻密度显著高于附泥和附石丝状藻, 且狐尾藻上着生丝状藻密度与浮游丝状藻密度呈显著正相关, 表明狐尾藻着生丝状藻可能是浮游丝状藻较重要的来源之一, 该结果可为西湖丝状藻水华的控制提供一些参考。相关性分析表明, 着生藻类和丝状藻与各理化因子(水深、透明度、溶解氧、水温、pH、TN、SRP、TP等)均无显著相关性。  相似文献

This study presents model experiments on the effect of the spatial pattern of herbivory on primary producer diversity. Microalgal biofilms (periphyton) were exposed to different mixtures of two benthic herbivores, the isopod Idothea chelipes and the gastropod Littorina littorea. The herbivores are similar in their feeding selectivity but differ strongly in the spatial pattern of grazing. Idothea did not increase the spatial heterogeneity of algal cell densities beyond the level of ungrazed controls (<1 order of magnitude between local minima and maxima at the 1 mm2 scale). Littorina grazing, in contrast, created a pronounced spatial heterogeneity with maximum:minmum ratios of almost 3 orders of magnitude. When algae were exposed to mixtures of both gazers, the spatial heterogeneity of microalgal cell densities increased with an increasing proportion of Littorina in the herbivore mixture. Algal species richness, diversity and evenness also increased with increasing proportions of Littorina, and was highly significantly correlated with the spatial heterogeneity of cell densities. The potential of metabolomics for toxicity analysis with synchronized algal populations during growth was explored in a proof of principle study. Low molecular weight compounds from hydrophilic and lipophilic extracts of algal populations of the unicellular green alga Scenedesmus vacuolatus were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and subsequent multivariate analysis to identify time-related patterns. Algal metabolite responses were studied under control and exposure conditions for the photosystem II-inhibiting herbicide prometryn. To define the typical metabolic profile of control S. vacuolatus cultures seven time points over a growth period of 14 h were evaluated. The results show a clear time-related trend in metabolite levels and a distinct separation of exposed and reference algal populations. The results suggest an impairment of the energy metabolism associated with an activation of catabolic processes and a retardation of carbohydrate biosynthesis in treated algae. Metabolite results were compared to observation parameters, currently used in phytotoxicity assessment, showing that metabolites respond faster to exposure than algal growth. The potential of metabolomics for toxicity evaluation, especially to identify physiological markers and to detect effects at an early state of exposure, are discussed. Therefore, we suggest a metabolomics approach utilizing synchronous algal cultures to be a suitable future tool in ecotoxicology.  相似文献

The potential interactions of grazing, nutrients and light in influencing autotroph species diversity have not previously been considered. Earlier studies have shown that grazing and nutrients interact in determining autotroph species diversity, since grazing decreases species diversity when nutrients (i.e. N or P) limit autotroph growth, but increases it when nutrients are replete. We hypothesized that increased light intensities would intensify the interactions between grazing and nutrients on algal species diversity, resulting in even stronger reductions in algal species diversity through grazing under nutrient–poor conditions, and to even stronger increases of algal species diversity through grazing under nutrient-rich conditions. We studied the effects of grazing (absent, present), nutrients (ambient, N + P enriched) and light (low light, high light) on benthic algal diversity and periphyton C:nutrient ratios (which can indicate algal nutrient limitation) in a factorial laboratory experiment, using the gastropod grazer Viviparus viviparus. Grazing decreased algal biomass and algal diversity, but increased C:P and N:P ratios of periphyton. Grazing also affected periphyton species composition, by decreasing the proportion of Spirogyra sp. and increasing the proportion of species in the Chaetophorales. Grazing effects on diversity as well as on periphyton N:P ratios were weakened when nutrients were added (interaction between grazing and nutrients). Chlorophyll a (Chl a) per area increased with nutrient addition and decreased with high light intensities. Light did not increase the strength of the interaction between grazing and nutrients on periphytic algal diversity. This study shows that nutrient addition substantially reduced the negative effects of grazing on periphytic algal diversity, whereas light did not interact with grazing or nutrient enrichment in determining periphytic algal diversity.  相似文献

Synopsis We experimentally manipulated fish grazing pressure to determine whether fish herbivory played an important role in the structure of a Costa Rican stream. Non-planktonic plant matter represented a significant percentage ( 25%) of the diet of 77% of the 17 fish species in the community. We prevented fish grazing on macrophytes, tree leaves, and periphyton using fish exclusion cages. Fish grazedPanicum sp., used as a generalized aquatic macrophyte, to the stems after 6 days in control areas, and consumed all or much ofFicus insipida andMonstera sp. leaves when placed in the stream after 48 hours. Plants and leaves experimentally protected by cages remained intact. In periphyton studies, fifty percent more ash free dry weight occurred on 25 × 25 cm floor tiles protected from fish grazing by cages than on tiles in roofless controls exposed to fish grazing for 19 days, suggesting a reduction in periphyton biomass. These results demonstrate that fish herbivory affects macrophyte abundance, and impacts the amount of leaf litter in the stream. Fish herbivory may also have an important effect on overall periphyton biomass. Herbivorous fish species generally represent a larger proportion of the total fish community in tropical compared to temperate streams; thus fish grazing is more likely to have an important influence on plant and animal abundances and distributions in tropical streams.  相似文献

Summary Benthic algal assemblages are regulated by both abiotic (e.g., nutrient) and biotic (e.g., grazing) constraint. The objective of this study was to determine how changes in these two factors affected the structure of an algal assemblage in an ephemeral stream. Coverslips were incubated for 21 days in enclosures containing one of three nutrient environments (ambient, phosphorus-enriched, or phosphorus and nitrogen enriched) and one of four densities of the snail Gonibasis (0, 40, 80, or 120 snails/m2) and examined directly to enumerate the algal assemblage. The effect of grazing on algal biomass was dependent on the nutrient environment. An overstory of diatoms was susceptible to removal by grazing and was not strongly affected by nutrient enrichment. An understory of Stigeoclonium was more resistant to grazing and responded strongly to nutrient enrichment only in the presence of grazers. Snail grazers may mediate nutrient availability to the understory indirectly by removing overlying cells or by direct excretion of nutrients. Multiple interactions occur between benthic herbivores and algae, and, as shown here, some of them are positive and involve modifications of the nutrient environment.  相似文献

新疆额尔齐斯河周丛藻类群落结构特征研究   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
周丛藻类是新疆跨境河流土著及特有鱼类重要的基础饵料资源, 然而在该地区有关周丛藻类的研究目前尚属空白。有鉴于此, 2012年7、8、10月对新疆跨境河流额尔齐斯河全流域的周丛藻类群落结构进行了系统的调查分析。结果表明, 周丛藻类隶属7门70属178种, 由硅藻门、绿藻门、蓝藻门、裸藻门、黄藻门、金藻门和甲藻门组成, 其中硅藻门有92种并占据绝对优势(51.7%), 绿藻门49种(30.3%), 蓝藻门20种(11.8%), 裸藻门5种(2.8%), 黄藻门3种(1.7%), 金藻门2种(0.1%), 甲藻门仅1种(0.6%), 周丛藻类在不同月份的种类数存在显著差异(P 0.01)。优势种主要为硅藻门的嗜盐舟形藻(Navicula halophila)、钝脆杆藻(Fragilaria capucina Desm)、极小桥弯藻(Cymbella perpusilla Cl)以及蓝藻门的皮状席藻(Phormidium corium Gom)等。研究期间, 额尔齐斯河周丛藻类的密度和生物量的均值分别为1105.5106 ind./m2和2692.0 mg/m2, 不同月份间密度和生物量的分布差异不显著, 但在空间分布上整体趋势为中下游地区高于上游地区。水温和营养盐成为影响其分布的主要环境因子。Simpson多样性指数、Shannon-Wiener多样性指数、Pielou均匀度指数和Margalef丰富度指数的平均值分别是0.38、3.04、0.66和2.55。运用多样性指数和藻类丰度对额尔齐斯河水质评价为轻度污染。    相似文献

The response of wetlands to elevated nutrient loads typically has been examined in the context of using wetlands for nutrient removal. However, concern over the degradation of natural wetlands following anthropogenic disturbance continues to increase. Most research has focussed on the response of emergent wetlands, with an emphasis on the role of macrophytes. In this study, 21 1.8 m2 enclosures (mesocosms) were placed in a pristine open-water (slough) wetland and subjected to 7 inorganic phosphorus (P) loads; 0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.2, 6.4, and 12.8 g/m2/y. This study demonstrated that while the rate of specific P accumulation was a function of the loading rate, the duration of loading is a critical factor in the ultimate P concentration in the biota and soil. Thus, time is an important consideration when determining response to enrichment. Phosphorus added to the slough was removed rapidly by the initially abundant metaphyton (unattached floating and suspended periphyton) and epipelon (benthic periphyton), which concentrated P 10- to 50-fold above background periphyton concentrations. Metaphyton concentrated P more rapidly than epipelon; however, both assemblages stabilized P concentrations between 2.6–3.0 g/kg. Water lily responded to elevated P loads with increased leaf size and nutrient accumulation. After 2-y, water lily P concentrations in the highest loaded mesocosms were similar to those observed in periphyton. Soil and porewater nutrients were slower to respond to P enrichment. Soil P concentrations were unchanged by P enrichment except for the highest loaded mesocosms. After 1-y of P loading, mesocosms receiving 12.8 g/m2/y had soil P concentrations almost 2-fold higher than background concentrations. Porewater P concentrations also showed little change throughout the experiment, with the exception of load 12.8 g/m2/y, which increased dramatically after the 1st year. During the 2nd year, average porewater P concentrations in this highest load were over 50-fold higher than background concentrations. Nitrogen concentrations in periphyton and water lily also generally increased in response to increased P loads. The high affinity of periphyton and water lily for P, combined with their subsequent influence on N uptake, suggests that these components can play an important role in wetland nutrient cycling. The disappearance of these communities may result in a reduction in the nutrient assimilative capacity of wetlands.  相似文献

Denitrification is a major mechanism for nitrogen removal from nitrogen-rich waters, but it requires oxygen-poor conditions. We assessed denitrification rates in nitrate-rich but also oxygen-rich river water during its stay in a floodplain. We measured diurnal oxygen fluctuations in floodwater along the river Rhine, and carried out an experiment to assess denitrification rates during day, evening and night. Denitrification in floodwater and flooded sediment were measured, comparing activity of periphyton and sediment from agricultural grasslands and reedbeds. Floodwater along the river Rhine was oxygen-saturated (> 10 mg O2/L) during the day, but oxygen largely disappeared during the night (0.4–0.8 mg O2/L). Independent of oxygen concentrations, denitrification in surface water alone hardly occurred. In flooded sediments, however, denitrification rates were much higher (1.1–1.5 mg N m–2 h–1), particularly at dark and oxygen-poor conditions (nighttime). In the experimental jars, reedbed-periphyton bacteria achieved similar denitrification rates as bacteria in sediment, but overall periphyton denitrification was of minor importance when calculated per square meter. Apart from oxygen levels, maximum denitrification appeared to be regulated by nitrate diffusion from water into the sediment, as the maximum quantity of N denitrified in the sediment equalled the quantity of N lossed from the surface water. Assessed 24-hr denitrification rates in the flooded floodplains (c. 15 mg N m–2 d–1) were similar in grasslands and reedbeds, and were rather low compared to rates in other floodplains.  相似文献
