In many aquatic animals, predator avoidance can be stimulated by chemical cues, including those released by injured prey (alarm cues). Alarm cues of both conspecific and heterospecific origin have been identified within several fish taxa, where phylogenetic conservation of the cue-response complex is common. Turbellarian flatworms (planaria) are among the simplest animals known to respond to chemical cues released by injured conspecifics. We examined how two locally sympatric planaria species respond to conspecific and heterospecific chemical cues using macerated tissue suspensions. Brown (Girardia tigrina) and black (Dugesia dorotocephala) planaria both exhibited avoidance behavior when presented conspecific cues. Despite a significant twofold difference in body size (black > brown), stimulus prepared from a single (1×) individual of either species elicited avoidance. Increasing brown planaria cue concentration by macerating two individuals (2×) produced a significant increase in conspecific avoidance. Heterospecific stimuli produced asymmetric results. Black planaria avoided the brown planaria stimulus, but only in the higher concentration (2×) trials. Brown planaria did not consistently exhibit avoidance of the black planaria stimulus and some brown subjects approached and consumed black planarian tissues. Our results expand the demonstrated occurrence of alarm cues among planaria and suggest that avoidance behavior can be mediated by multiple environmental and intrinsic factors in freshwater Turbellaria.  相似文献

Abstract. Life cycles, ploidy levels, reproductive modes, and regeneration capacities of laboratory populations of the southern Brazil freshwater planarians Girardia tigrina and Girardia schubarti were studied. The mating behavior and life cycle of different populations from both species were analyzed regarding their karyotype, body size, modes of reproduction, and regeneration potential. Reproduction was evaluated according to fecundity, fertility, and fissiparity indices. In both species we observed that diploid planarians are ∼25% larger than triploid or mixoploid ones and that sexually reproducing populations have more offspring than asexual ones. Cocoon incubation time was shorter for G. tigrina , and G. schubarti showed a higher frequency of spontaneous malformations. G. tigrina was both more fecund (produced more cocoons) and more fertile (produced more hatchlings) than G. schubarti . The effects of alternative food sources (liver or egg yolk), demographic density, and water–salt concentration were evaluated in different populations of both species. All evaluated environmental factors had effects on fecundity and fertility indices and were more prominent for G. schubarti than for G. tigrina . Our data suggest that the populations of G. schubarti were more sensitive to environmental factors, and thus may be useful as bioindicators.  相似文献

The effects of neuropeptide F (NPF; from Moniezia expansa) on the regeneration of Girardia tigrina were studied. The animals were decapitated and incubated in water (control) or NPF. The dynamics of the proliferation of the neoblasts in the developing tissue were studied during the course of regeneration by monitoring the mitotic index (MI). The effects of incubation in FMRFamide and GYIRFamide on the MI were also tested. The course of cephalic regeneration was followed with in vivo computer-assisted morphometry for up to 7 days. The development of the regenerating nervous system and the musculature was visualised by immunostaining with a primary antiserum to the C-terminal decapeptide of NPF (YFAIIGRPRFa) and tetramethylrhodamine-isothiocyanate-conjugated phalloidin, which stains F-actin in muscle filaments. The study showed that NPF had a stimulatory effect on the mitotic activity of the neoblasts. FMRFamide and GYIRFamide did not have this effect. NPF also stimulated the growth of the regenerating head and the growing nervous system and musculature. NPF is postulated to have a morphogenetic action in the regenerating animals. The free radical nitric oxide (NO) has emerged as a simple and unique signalling molecule that can serve as neurotransmitter, paracrine substance or hormone. NO is a gas, formed by various neuronal cells, both centrally and peripherally. NO regulates cyclic GMP synthesis. The production of NO can be detected using the NADPH diaphorase (NADPH-d) histochemical stain for nitric oxide synthase (NOS). NOS was detected in two parasitic flatworms, Diphyllobothrium dendriticum and Hymenolepis diminuta, and two free-living flatworms, Planaria torva and Girardia tigrina. The staining for NOS was very strong in the nervous system of both parasitic worms. The main nerve cords, the transverse ring commmissures, nerves in association with the musculature, especially the cirrus musculature and sensory nerve endings showed NADPH-d staining. The NADPH-d staining in the free-living flatworms was much weaker. Still NOS activity was found in the neuropile of the brain and in association with the pharynx musculature. The demonstration of NOS in flatworms, indicates that NO is an old signal molecule in evolutionary terms. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We conducted a field survey for flatworms to select species as potential biological control agents against Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens (Diptera, Culicidae) breeding in artificial containers. Laboratory experiments were performed to determine the daily predation rate, differential predation on each mosquito larval instar, selective predation on either A. aegypti or C. pipiens, and predator tolerance to water from artificial containers. Girardia anceps (Tricladida, Paludicola, Dugesiidae), Mesostoma ehrenbergii and Bothromesostoma cf. evelinae (Rhabdocoela, Typhloplanoida, Typhloplanidae) were found in temporary puddles and permanent pools. In the laboratory, they killed between 52% and 100% of immature mosquitoes coexisting in the same habitat. No preference of flatworms for mosquito preys was detected. Predation rate was related to predator size and instar of preys. Girardia anceps and B. evelinae survived after a dry period and when re-flooding occurred, they laid eggs. Tolerance to water from artificial containers was highest in G. anceps and this species could be a suitable predator to reduce mosquito populations from artificial containers using an inoculative approach.  相似文献

A combination of suppression subtractive hybridization and a new technique of mirror orientation selection was used to compare the total DNA for two, sexual and asexual, races of freshwater planarian Girardia tigrina. Several race-specific DNA fragments were found. A new element termed planarian extrachromosomal virus-like element (PEVE) was revealed in the asexual race. The PEVE genome contains two unique regions, Ul and Us, which are flanked by inverted repeats. Two variants observed for the PEVE genome differ in combination of single- and double-stranded regions corresponding to Ul and Us. The PEVE genome codes for two helicases, one homologous to the circovirus replication initiation protein (Rep) and one corresponding to the helicase domain of papillomavirus E1. PEVE is nonuniformly distributed through the planarian body and is possibly replicated only in certain parenchymal cells.  相似文献
