An intense colored marine bacterium, identified as Cellulophaga lytica, was isolated previously from a sea anemone surface on the Charente-Maritime rocky shore (Atlantic Coast, France), and iridescence of its colonies under direct light was recently described. In addition, iridescence intensities were found to differ strongly between C. lytica strains from different culture collections. However, importantly, the occurrence and distribution of iridescent bacteria in the marine environment were still unknown. Therefore, in this study, a search was undertaken for marine iridescent bacterial strains in different biotopes of the Charente-Maritime coast. Various marine samples (water, sediment, macroalgae, other macroorganisms and detritus) were collected from seven biotopes using a direct plate inoculation method. As a result, 34 iridescent strains related to the genus Cellulophaga, as well as 63 iridescent strains affiliated to the genera Tenacibaculum and Aquimarina, were isolated. Iridescent colors were different according to the genera but iridescent marine bacteria were widely distributed. However, a majority of strains were isolated from rocky shores and, in particular, red seaweed surfaces and mollusks. The data from the study suggested that isolates with iridescent properties were well conserved in stressful environments such as the coastal shoreline. This origin may provide an insight into the ecological and biological functions of iridescence.  相似文献

We studied the morphology and molecular phylogeny of Myoschiston duplicatum, a peritrich ciliate that has been recorded as an epibiont of crustaceans, but which we also identified on marine algae from Korea. The important morphological characteristics revealed by silver staining of Myoschiston species have not been described because they are rarely collected. Using morphological methods, we redescribed the type species of the genus, Myoschiston duplicatum, and provided an improved diagnosis of Myoschiston. In addition, the coding regions for nuclear small subunit (SSU) rRNA and internal transcribed spacer 1‐5.8S‐internal transcribed spacer 2 sequences were sequenced. Phylogenetic analyses that included available SSU rDNA sequences of peritrichs from GenBank strongly supported a position of M. duplicatum within the family Zoothamniidae. In addition, phylogenetic analyses were performed with single datasets (ITS1‐5.8S‐ITS2) and combined datasets (SSU rDNA + ITS1‐5.8S‐ITS2) to explore further the phylogenetic relationship in the family Zoothamniidae between the three morphologically similar genera—Zoothamnium, Myoschiston, and Zoothamnopsis.  相似文献

The scallop Chlamys hastata frequently carries epibionts such as sponges and barnacles on its shells. Although the scallop-sponge relationship has been characterized as a mutualism, little is known about the scallop-barnacle relationship. This study investigated the effects of sponge and barnacle encrustation on the ability of C. hastata to avoid predation by the sea star Pycnopodia helianthoides. In feeding trials, P. helianthoides caught and consumed significantly more barnacle-encrusted scallops (7.7 ± 0.8 out of 20 scallops) than scallops encrusted by either of the sponges Myxilla incrustans (4.1 ± 0.9) or Mycale adhaerens (3.0 ± 0.5). Epibiont-free scallops (5.7 ± 0.5) formed an intermediate treatment between barnacle-encrusted and sponge-encrusted scallops. Possible mechanisms by which the sponges protected the scallops were investigated in two ways: two feeding trials were videotaped to allow qualitative analysis of sea star and scallop behavior and sea star feeding responses to scallop and sponge homogenates were determined to investigate if sea stars accept scallops and sponges as prey. Sea stars displayed positive feeding responses to scallop puree 97.5% ± 1.6 of the time while only displaying positive responses to Mycale adhaerens homogenate 4.4% ± 2.0 of the time and to Myxilla incrustans homogenate 4.4% ± 2.9 of the time. The videotaped feeding trials indicated that interference with tube feet adhesion by the sponge deterred predation. Observations of both sea stars that were videotaped showed that neither avoided trying to capture sponge-encrusted scallops, and at no time was a captured scallop willingly released by the sea stars. Thus, it appears that sponges provide tactile-mechanical protection and possibly chemical or tactile camouflage in this predator/prey relationship. Finally, the effects of sponge encrustation on barnacle settlement were determined. Field experiments showed that barnacle larvae settled more frequently on epibiont-free scallops than on those with either of the two sponges, potentially protecting the scallops from an epibiont that increases the scallop’s susceptibility to predation. The novel ciliate Platynematum salinarum (Scuticociliatia) was isolated only recently from a thalassohaline solar saltern pond (12%) in Portugal. Scanning electron microscopy showed numerous bacterial-shaped cells covering the complete surface of the ciliate. The rod-shaped epibionts were identified and characterized following the “Full-Cycle rRNA Approach”. The almost full-length 16S rRNA gene sequence was obtained using archaeal-specific primers and two species-specific probes were designed for fluorescence in situ hybridization. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of the epibiotic cells showed 87% sequence identity with the type strain sequence of the closest characterized species Halolamina pelagica. Phylogenetic reconstructions affiliated the novel organism to the genus Halolamina (Halobacteria, Archaea). Attempts to isolate the epibionts failed and, therefore, growth experiments incorporating the antibiotic anisomycin were conducted in order to investigate the potential symbiotic relationship between P. salinarum and the epibionts. The results suggested an obligate symbiosis between the two organisms and revealed the first symbiotic representative of the Halobacteria. Based on the phylogenetic analyses and growth experiments we propose the classification of this novel organism in a new genus, with the taxon name “Candidatus Haloectosymbiotes riaformosensis”.  相似文献

The heterotrich ciliate Mirofolliculina limnoriae occurs in an obligate association with wood-boring species of the isopod Limnoria. It attaches to the dorsal surface of the limnoriid pleotelson. Folliculinid-bearing populations of Limnoria tripunctata from the Ria Formosa, Portugal, and of Limnoria quadripunctata from Portsmouth, UK, were sampled. Up to four folliculinids were found on one individual of L. quadripunctata and up to twelve on L. tripunctata. There was no evidence that folliculinid load increased with host size. The nature of the epibiont/basibiont relationship was examined by observing animals with and without epibionts, kept individually with small sticks of wood in cell culture wells over periods of up to 15 days. Faecal pellet production and moulting were recorded. In both host species, feeding rate as measured by faecal pellet production was significantly lower in animals bearing folliculinids. Feeding rate also diminished with the onset of moulting, but returned to the original rate within a week after moulting. The estimated intermoult period for the population of L. tripunctata examined was about 25 days and for L. quadripunctata was about 32 days. However, the proportion of individuals moulting over the period of observation declined with increasing size in L. tripunctata, suggesting increasing length of intermoult period with age. As the host faces toward the blind end of its tunnel and ventilates the burrow with its pleopods, the folliculinids are well placed to intercept particulate food in the incoming water stream. There are no clear advantages for the host in the association, but the suppression of feeding and the potential of the folliculinids to hinder swimming during dispersal migrations indicate that the association should be viewed as ectoparasitism rather than mutualism or commensalism.  相似文献

Demographic responses of a commensal annelid of freshwater crayfish, Stratiodrilus aeglaphilus, to a sublethal organic enrichment were tested. Censuses of the S. aeglaphilus population were performed every 3 days during a 27 days period. The demographic variables were estimated using a quadratic programming method. Population growth rate (λ) was 1.0230 in the control, and 0.9145 in the organic enrichment treatment, it was indicating positive growing and decrease, respectively. Decomposition analysis showed an antagonistic response of the demographic parameters to organic enrichment, with negative contributions from eggs and juveniles stasis and growing probabilities, and positive contributions from adults survival and fecundity. After the organic enrichment, the positive effect on adults could not compensate the adverse effect on the early stages, thus causing a reduction of the population density of S. aeglaphilus. Habitats composed of living ‘ecosystem engineers’, such as mussels, are subject to direct and indirect interactions with organisms that live among them. These interactions may affect the presence and structure of habitat, and hence, the associated taxa. We examined the direct effects of epibiotic algae on the survival, biomass and recruitment of mussels (Mytilus L.) on the west coast of Ireland. A field experiment showed that the presence of epibiotic fucoid algae reduced the likelihood of survival of mussels during storms. We also found that the strength of attachment of mussels did not increase in the presence of epibionts. Another in situ experiment revealed that the presence of ephemeral epibiotic algal mats had no effect on the biomass of host mussels, suggesting no effect on mussel growth or production. The abundance of small mussels (< 5 mm) covaried with cover of epibiotic algae at one location, but experimental results suggest no direct effect of the algae on recruitment unless through the action of chemical cues which linger after the removal of algae. We have identified a negative direct interaction between epibiotic algae and mussels on exposed rocky shores, which may often be characterised by bottom-up regulation. It is thought that positive interactions may be more important on more sheltered or sedimentary shores where top-down processes are more likely to dominate.  相似文献
