An arctiine species Lemyra flammeola (Moore) is newly recorded from Korea. Three specimens of L. flammeola were collected on the island of Jejudo in September of 2009. Here we provide a diagnosis and systematic account of L. flammeola. Up to now 79 species of Arctiidae have been recorded from the Korean peninsula.

Conilepia nigricosta (Leech 1888) is very similar to Lithosia quadra in the superficial appearance of females. We re‐examined their morphologies and analyzed their DNA barcode regions to assess their taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationships with other related genera. Our morphological study confirmed the diagnostic value of the wing venation and the genital structures in both sexes. Our analyses with DNA barcodes showed sufficient genetic divergences ranging from 6.21% to 7.16% between those two species. The phylogenetic relationship using the barcoding region for the members belonging to lithosiina showed that Conilepia and Lithosia are suggested as having strong monophyly compared to other genera.

Mimicry is one of the oldest concepts in biology, but it still presents many puzzles and continues to be widely debated. Simulation of wasps with a yellow‐black abdominal pattern by other insects (commonly called “wasp mimicry”) is traditionally considered a case of resemblance of unprofitable by profitable prey causing educated predators to avoid models and mimics to the advantage of both (Figure 1a). However, as wasps themselves are predators of insects, wasp mimicry can also be seen as a case of resemblance to one's own potential antagonist. We here propose an additional hypothesis to Batesian and Müllerian mimicry (both typically involving selection by learning vertebrate predators; cf. Table 1) that reflects another possible scenario for the evolution of multifold and in particular very accurate resemblances to wasps: an innate, visual inhibition of aggression among look‐alike wasps, based on their social organization and high abundance. We argue that wasp species resembling each other need not only be Müllerian mutualists and that other insects resembling wasps need not only be Batesian mimics, but an innate ability of wasps to recognize each other during hunting is the driver in the evolution of a distinct kind of masquerade, in which model, mimic, and selecting agent belong to one or several species (Figure  1b). Wasp mimics resemble wasps not (only) to be mistaken by educated predators but rather, or in addition, to escape attack from their wasp models. Within a given ecosystem, there will be selection pressures leading to masquerade driven by wasps and/or to mimicry driven by other predators that have to learn to avoid them. Different pressures by guilds of these two types of selective agents could explain the widely differing fidelity with respect to the models in assemblages of yellow jackets and yellow jacket look‐alikes.

Nutrient accumulation is crucial in insect diapause preparation because insufficient nutrient accumulation can shorten the diapause period, interfere with diapause development completion, and decrease the probability of surviving the overwintering period. The amounts of lipids and carbohydrates stored in diapausing pupae of Hyphantria cunea (Drury) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae, Arctiinae) are greater than those in the non-diapausing pupae. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that diapause-destined (DD) and non-diapause-destined (NDD) larvae of H. cunea have different nutrient accumulation patterns in penultimate and final instars. The body mass, as well as lipid, carbohydrate, and soluble protein contents, and the efficiency of converting digested food and ingested food into body matter were greater in the DD penultimate and final instars than in the NDD penultimate and final instars. Larger amounts of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins were absorbed by DD penultimate and final instars and the final instar development period in the DD larvae was prolonged relative to NDD larvae. The activities of fatty acid synthase and glycogen synthase of DD penultimate and final instars were significantly higher than those of NDD larvae. These results suggest that the changes in nutrient accumulation patterns between DD and NDD larvae occur in penultimate and final instars, and that the DD larvae increase their nutrient accumulation during diapause preparation by the combined effect of extending their final-instar development period and improving their digestive efficiency; they increase their lipid and carbohydrate stores by increasing the activities of fatty acid synthase and glycogen synthase in the fat body.

Twonew Eospilarctia species and one new subspecies from China, Myanmar and Vietnam, respectively, are described. Superficially the new species Eospilarctia maciaisp. n., Eospilarctia naumannisp. n. and Eospilarctia yuennanica fansipanassp. n. resemble related congeners but they can be distinguished by the differences in wing pattern, genitalia and distribution provided. Eospilarctia yuennanica guangdonga Dubatolov, Kishida & Wang, 2008 is upgraded to species level. A checklist of the genus Eospilarctia and a key to the Eospilarctia yuennanica (Daniel, 1943) species-group, based on external characters and male genitalia, is presented.

1. Ecologists have recognised several factors that may explain the distribution of species in a metacommunity. These factors may be related to the dispersal of individuals among the patches and environmental conditions. 2. Here, we attempted to determine which of the four different metacommunity frameworks (patch dynamics, mass effect, neutral processes, and species sorting) explain the distribution of Arctiinae moths in Brazilian savanna areas with different tree species richness. 3. The Arctiinae moths were categorised as habitat specialists or generalists, common or rare, and belonging to the tribes Arctiini and Lithosiini. We hypothesized that environmental variables best explain the abundance and occurrence of habitat specialist species, common species, and members of Lithosiini; whereas spatial processes are more closely related to habitat generalists, rare species, and members of Arctiini. 4. Contrary to our expectations, we found that the species sorting (mainly dictated by the species richness of trees) best explained the variation in abundance and occurrence of the majority of species groups. Spatial processes (more related to patch dynamics, mass effect, and neutral), although they were significantly related to some species groups, were not strong enough to explain the distribution of these species in the study area. 5. The plant species richness was the most important environmental condition, related to moth species niches. Therefore, species sorting best explained the distribution of the species of Arctiinae in the Brazilian savanna.
